Celebrations at Ayodhya

Associated with the birth of Lord Ram, Ram Navami is the most prominent festival of Ayodhya. It is celebrated as the day when the human avatar of Lord Vishnu, Lord Ram appeared on earth. Practiced with a 9-day long fast, or Navratri, the festival is celebrated with prayer, meditation and utmost devotion, and takes place on the 9th day of the Chaitra month of the Hindu calendar. It is when Ayodhya sees the most crowd, primarily in the form of devotees who come to partake in the holy festival of Lord Ram’s birth.

Maha Shivratri is another festival celebrated with much fervor at Ayodhya. The festival is held to honor the union of the divine couple of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. The major festivities take place at the Nageshwarnath Temple, and the temple gets filled with ardent Shiva bhakts.

  • The Uttar Pradesh government, in an e-brochure released in 2021, unveiled an ambitious plan to transform Ayodhya into a Smart City, with a targeted completion of key projects by 2031.
  • The government not only wants grand Ram Janmabhoomi to be a prominent pilgrimage destination, but it also plans to revamp Ayodhya Dham and Ayodhya.
  • The government's vision encompasses a multitude of projects, with approximately 178 initiatives valued at Rs 30,500 crore. These efforts aim to catapult Ayodhya into a world-class city, with a specific focus on harnessing the tourism potential of both foreign visitors and Indian nationals.

Over the next few years, Ayodhya, a holy city with great historical value, is expected to undergo a massive transformation into a major worldwide tourism destination, with over three lakh visitors per day. This is a truly ambitious approach. Dikshu Kukreja, the project’s master planner, is leading this massive reconstruction. He finds inspiration in well-known worldwide models such as Vatican City, Cambodia, Jerusalem, Tirupati, and Amritsar. The project intends to reduce traffic, make effective use of the land, and protect Ayodhya’s unique cultural legacy.

    ayodhya tourism plan

Methodical Scheduling Enlightened by Worldwide Insights

The careful planning that has gone into transforming Ayodhya into a popular tourist attraction is the result of a thorough analysis of comparable cases across the globe. Kukreja highlights the need of striking a balance between the development of contemporary infrastructure and the maintenance of historical and cultural identity. Drawing on the experiences of locations such as Vatican City, Cambodia, Jerusalem, Tirupati, and Amritsar, the plan aims to guarantee effective land use and establish an atmosphere that improves the general standard of living for both locals and tourists. Ayodhya’s transformation into a major hub for tourism, business, and religious activities is predicted to bring in over three lakh pilgrims per day in the next three to four years. Ayodhya aims to become a worldwide tourism destination, offering substantial prospects for the hospitality and related industries, with a concentration on spiritual, cultural, and heritage values.

    The Ambitious Master Plan

The master plan for the redevelopment of Ayodhya calls for an investment exceeding Rs 85,000 crore and calls for completion over ten years. Strategic connectedness is emphasized in the first phase, which is scheduled to begin on January 22 with the Ram temple’s dedication ceremony. The project aims to create an immersive cultural experience by creating grand entry points called “Ram dwarfs,” traditional stone facades, homestays, dharamshalas, and the creation of the Ramayana Spiritual Forest.

    Preserving Cultural and Religious history

Kukreja emphasizes how crucial it is to keep Ayodhya’s religious and cultural history intact during the reconstruction. The project’s architecture, which took inspiration from Dravidian temple architecture, echoes the magnificence of Ayodhya. Promoting Ayodhya’s distinct identity while fostering economic prosperity and social well-being requires striking a balance between tourism facilitation and environmental conservation and cultural preservation.

Lessons from Indian and International Paradigms

The master planner and his group conducted a thorough analysis of the infrastructure and urban design of temple towns in India and around the world. By using Tirupati, Amritsar, Vatican City, Jerusalem, Cambodia, and other cities as models, best practices that were adapted to the unique circumstances of Ayodhya may be implemented. The Ayodhya redevelopment project is evidence of how flexible and well-integrated Indian and international planning paradigms can be.

    Connectivity as a Catalyst

The project gave priority to effective transportation infrastructure because it recognized the critical role that connectivity played in converting Ayodhya into a popular tourist destination worldwide. The recently renovated train station and airport serve as further evidence of the dedication to smooth accessibility for guests. The main goals are to use parking zones, discourage private vehicle admission into the city, and establish a network of net-zero electric vehicles for intra-city mobility.

Planning for Ayodhya’s Future in a Sustainable Way

In addition to drawing tourists, the reconstruction project aims to balance tourism with the lifestyles of Ayodhya’s long-term residents through sustainable planning. Through the establishment of a peaceful environment that prevents tourists from upsetting locals, the project hopes to advance social progress, economic development, and environmental preservation. In conclusion, Ayodhya needs a paradigm shift.

Ayodhya’s rise to prominence as a worldwide tourism destination is a paradigm shift that combines an awareness of the world with a dedication to maintaining the city’s distinctive cultural and religious legacy. The master plan aims to revitalize Ayodhya’s character while promoting sustainability and economic progress, drawing inspiration from international models. The world is eagerly awaiting Ayodhya’s big voyage because it knows that the city has the potential to become a model for sustainable, culturally aware, and all-encompassing urban development.

Ayodhya’s $10 Billion Revamp Sparks Ambitious Tourism Projections: India Report

    Peden Doma Bhutia , Skift

    January 23rd, 2024 at 11:00 PM EST

Despite the surge in online travel searches, the ultimate success in reaching the 50 million tourist goal for Ayodhya hinges on translating the ambitious infrastructure plans into tangible reality.

As Ayodhya undergoes a massive transformation with a projected $10 billion redevelopment, including a new airport, upgraded railway station, township, and improved road connectivity, the town could attract over 50 million tourists annually, according to a report by brokerage firm Jeffries.

Why 50 Million Is a Big Number: The town in Uttar Pradesh has been in the news for Monday’s inauguration of the temple dedicated to Lord Ram. It is touted to surpass other religious tourism hotspots like the Golden Temple that receives around 30-35 million visitors annually, and Tirupati temple that sees 25-30 million visits.

In a global context, Vatican City attracts approximately 9 million tourists yearly, while Mecca in Saudi Arabia welcomes around 20 million.

Religious Tourism in India: Religious tourism is a significant segment of India’s tourism industry, as evidenced by increased bookings to spiritual destinations on platforms like Yatra Online and MakeMyTrip. MakeMyTrip observed 97% growth in searches for spiritual destinations between 2021-2023, with Ayodhya experiencing a surge of 585% in 2023 compared to 2021.

On-platform searches for Ayodhya from India increased by 1,806% since the inauguration announcement, with the peak search being recorded on December 30, the day of the airport inauguration, MakeMyTrip noted.

Temple for India’s Tourism Boost: Jeffries believes that despite infrastructural bottlenecks, popular religious centers in India attract annual tourist traffic of 10-30 million. The report suggests that Ayodhya, with improved connectivity and infrastructure, could have a substantial economic impact and serve as a template for India’s tourism boost.

Infrastructure Development so Far: With the first phase of the new Ayodhya airport operational, accommodating 1 million passengers, additional domestic capacity and an international terminal are expected by 2025, capable of handling 6 million passengers. The upgraded Ayodhya railway station now has double the capacity, accommodating 60,000 passengers per day.

The Hotels: While Ayodhya currently has 17 hotels with 590 rooms, 73 new hotels are in the pipeline, of which 40 are already under construction. Major players like Indian Hotels Company, Marriott, Wyndham and ITC are also investing in the region.

Last week Oyo announced the inauguration of 65 hotels and homes in Ayodhya to support the anticipated surge in tourism.

Oyo has also announced the launch of 400 properties to push religious tourism in destinations like Ayodhya, Puri, Shirdi, Varanasi, Amritsar, Tirupati, Haridwar, Katra-Vaishno Devi, and the Char Dham route by the end of this year.

Indian Hotels Company, that owns the Taj hotels, announced the signing of a third hotel in Ayodhya on Monday.

Surge in Online Tavel Searches: Recognizing that Ayodhya’s hotel infrastructure is still in development, Yatra Online reported a 70% increase in booking queries from December to January for Ayodhya.

“Flight bookings to Ayodhya have surged fourfold compared to the previous month. Simultaneously, daily searches for Ayodhya have quadrupled in January compared to December last year,” said Dhruv Shringi, CEO and whole-time director of Yatra Online.

Cleartrip also observed a 32% uptick in air bookings to Ayodhya. Prahlad Krishnamurthi, chief business officer of Cleartrip, had earlier shared, “We have seen a 300% surge in flight searches, along with a 200% spike in hotel searches. Hotel prices have increased by 60%, and flight fares have risen by 10% compared to the first week of January 2024.”

On Tuesday, Cleartrip and Flipkart Travel noted an overall 1500% increase in searches for Ayodhya across the platform.

Interglobe Enterprises Gets Udaan’s Aditya Pande as Group CEO

Interglobe Enterprises, the parent company of Indian low-cost carrier Indigo, has named Aditya Pande as its group CEO starting March 1.

In this role, Pande will be responsible for shaping Interglobe’s strategic agenda, overseeing and strengthening the leadership of the company’s line businesses and corporate staff functions, excluding Indigo, Interglobe said in a statement.

Pande will report to Rahul Bhatia, the group managing director of Interglobe Enterprises.

Pande joins Interglobe from Udaan , India’s largest enterprise e-commerce company, where he was chief financial officer for the past three years. Udaan announced Pande’s exit on Monday.

In a career spanning 25 years, Pande had been the chief financial officer at Indigo and has had roles at General Electric and US accounting firm Arthur Andersen.

    Ayodhya Sightseeing Tour

Are you planning an Ayodhya sightseeing tour anytime soon? Here are some of the must-visit temples and historically significant locations in Ayodhya. These attractions can also be included in the itinerary while planning a Varanasi Ayodhya tour package.

Ayodhya Ram Mandir : The revered Ayodhya Temple of Rama Lalla (infant Lord Rama) is a must-visit destination for anyone booking an Ayodhya tour package. The Ayodhya New Temple is located on the holy grounds of Rama Janmabhoomi , which is said to be the birthplace of Lord Rama. The temple is easy to reach as the distance between the Ram Mandir and railway station is less than 1 km.

Kanak Bhavan : The Kanak Bhavan is another important destination tourists should include in their Ayodhya sightseeing tour. The temple stays open throughout the year and is said to be a gift to Devi Sita after her marriage to Lord Rama. This temple is another must-visit for tourists booking an Ayodhya tour package.

Nageshwarnath Temple : The Nageshwarnath Temple of Ayodhya is renowned for its historic and cultural significance. It is believed to have been constructed by Kush, the son of Lord Rama. He dedicated the landmark to a Nag-Kanya, who was a devotee of Lord Shiva.

Tulsi Smarak : Dedicated to the great poet Tulsidas, the Tulsi Smarak Museum is a great place to include in an Ayodhya tour package. The museum is just 4 minutes away from the Ayodhya Rama Mandir. Pilgrims on an Ayodhya Darshan can visit the museum to see the famous Ram Leela performance from 6:00 to 9:00 pm.

Saryu Ghat : It is one of the best destinations to add to an Ayodhya tour package. Visitors can witness the glorious Saryu aarti, which takes place every evening after sunset.

Ram temple a reality, more on cards for Ayodhya: How govt plans to put 'Land of Shree Ram' on world tourism map

The union and state governments want to revamp ayodhya — dubbed “the land of sree ram” — to attract millions of tourists and put the city on the map of world tourism..

With the Shree Ram Janmabhoomi Temple, the Ayodhya city of Uttar Pradesh is firmly on the path to becoming “India's biggest religious tourism hub" . But the government seems to have a much bigger plan for Ayodhya — dubbed as "The Land of Sree Ram" by it. The Union and the Uttar Pradesh governments plan to put the city "on the map of world tourism in the years to come".

Tap here to follow Ayodhya Ram Mandir Inauguration Live Updates

An E-brochure by the Uttar Pradesh government, published in 2021, reads, "Besides constructing the grand Ram Janmabhoomi as a prominent pilgrimage destination , the government also plans to revamp Ayodhya Dham and Ayodhya ". The Shree Ram Janmabhoomi Temple was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday, January 22, in a grand ceremony.

    The Master Plan

The Uttar Pradesh government prepared a master plan for transforming Ayodhya into a Smart City in 2021. "This master plan will aim at the completion of key development projects in the ancient holy town by 2031," the state government's document said.

According to ANI , approximately 178 projects worth up to ₹ 30,500 crore have been initiated to develop Ayodhya into a world-class city. Meanwhile, according to the 2021 document, the state government aims to harness the potential of both foreign tourists and Indian nationals and "create a Ramayana circuit, with Ayodhya as the main hub".

The "majestic plan" to revamp Ayodhya includes the installation of 10 gates dedicated to Shree Ram, provision for underground cabling, and construction of a Rain Basera (night shelter) with an accommodation capacity of 10,000 people.

Moreover, there’s a proposal to convert Ayodhya’s Raj Sadan into an upmarket heritage hotel. The government further plans to develop all major public spots and parks in the city to boost tourism.

"There are several reservoirs across the city, all of which hold special importance due to their connection with Shree Ram, and these will also be repaired and restored. The government also plans to connect the rest of the country with the thematic Ramayana circuit," the brochure reads.

Brokerage Jefferies recently estimated that a $10 billion makeover of Ayodhya with a new airport, revamped railway station, township and improved road connectivity will likely drive a multiplier effect with new hotels and other economic activities. It "could attract 50 million tourists a year".

Now, to handle this anticipated surge in tourists, Ayodhya needs to have a sustainable infrastructure. And for that, the government has already rolled up its sleeves and started the development work in the city.

Key projects completed, some underway: 10 points

Ayodhya has undergone a paradigm shift fuelled by massive infrastructure growth with the grand Ram temple at its heart.

    1. The Ayodhya Development Authority (ADA) has initiated the installation process of 6-foot tall and 6-foot wide 3D and basic 4D illuminated laser-cut metal sculptures at various locations in the city. The installation of these artefacts will develop the streets of Ayodhya as an open gallery.

    2. Raja Dasharath Samadhi Sthal in Ayodhya has undergone a remarkable transformation in a bid to enhance the spiritual experience for tourists. There is also a plan to widen the road by 24 metres to reach the Raja Dashrath Samadhi Sthal. It will be connected to Navya Ayodhya. The construction work of about 13-kilometre-long 'Rampath' from Sahadatganj to Naya Ghat is in progress.

ALSO READ: Ram Mandir: Property rates likely to rise by 12-20 times in Ayodhya, say experts

    3. Phase 1 of a new airport in Ayodhya has become operational and can handle 1 million passengers. Additional domestic capacity and an international terminal are expected by 2025 with a capacity to handle 6 million passengers, PTI reported. Moreover, chopper services will reportedly be started to Ayodhya from six districts - Gorakhpur, Varanasi, Lucknow, Prayagraj, Mathura and Agra

    4. The renovation of the Satsang Bhavan has been carried out, transforming it into a kirtan-bhajan venue at the Samadhi Sthal. Approximately 200 to 250 devotees can now immerse themselves in the ocean of devotional songs and hymns together at this place. The restoration work of more than 108 ponds has also started in Ayodhya.

    5. Battery-operated carts will be made available for devotees visiting Ayodhya to offer prayers at the Ram temple and the Hanuman Garhi temple. As many as 650 e-carts will be deployed till March in the first phase. They "will be available at the parking lots across the city," Vice chairman of the Ayodhya Development Authority (ADA) Vishal Singh said.

    6. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath flagged off 50 electric buses and 25 green autos from the Ayodhya bus stand ahead of the Ram temple ceremony in January. The operation of electric buses will be initiated on the Dharma Path and Ram Path. Additionally, 100 electric buses will commence operations from January 15 onward. The convenience of golf carts and e-rickshaws will also be introduced, PTI reported.

    7. The UP government completed various restoration and development projects worth ₹ 105.65 crore to enhance the beauty of Ram Ki Paidi, giving it a new and grand form. The UP government built the country's largest floating screen at Chaudhary Charan Singh Ghat. It was to be installed at Aarti Ghat to show the Pran Pratishtha and related programmes.

    8. To facilitate the enjoyment of boating trips for tourists and devotees, the 'Jatayu Cruise Service' in the sacred Saryu river has been launched. The state government is also transforming the Ayodhya Dham railway station and it is being equipped with modern facilities.

    9. The widened Ram Path with uniform facades of buildings on both sides, ornamental lamp posts bearing a design representing the traditional 'Ramanadi tilak' and the 40 Surya Stambhs installed along Dharm Path and the Lata Mangeshkar Chowk are new tourist attractions in the city.

    10. There has been active participation of locals in providing homestay experiences to visitors. At present Ayodhya has around 17 hotels with 590 rooms. Up to 73 new hotels are in the pipeline, of which 40 are already under construction. While Indian Hotels, Marriott and Wyndham have already signed deals for hotels, ITC is exploring opportunities in Ayodhya. Oyo plans to add 1,000 hotel rooms in Ayodhya.

Ayodhya, the solar city of India

Ayodhya is being developed into a solar city to reduce its dependence on electricity. "The city is well and truly all set to undergo a complete makeover," E-brochure said. Meanwhile, according to an advertorial in the Times of India published on Monday, "Ayodhya is poised to become the first solar city of India." But how?

For the first time, a solar power-enabled e-boat was launched last week in a bid to make Ayodhya a "model solar city". CM Adityanath had inaugurated the rooftop-mounted solar boat service at the Sarayu Ghat, PTI reported.

An official release from the Chief Minister's Office (CMO) said, "This initiative marks the commencement of the first-of-its-kind electric solar technology-based service for inland waterways in the country, proving to be a game-changer." The Uttar Pradesh New and Renewable Energy Agency (UPNEDA) has prepared the outline for the regular operation of this boat service in the Saryu river of Ayodhya.

Besides, an official had said that the solar project in Ayodhya is going on at a fast pace. The Yogi government has implemented the installation of solar panels for electricity generation . This initiative has played a crucial role in reducing reliance on traditional energy sources.

The 8 concepts of Ayodhya's development

Following the directives of CM Adityanath, the development work is happening in Ayodhya based on eight concepts. What are these eight concepts and what do they mean? Here's what ANI had reported earlier:

    These eight concepts include making:

    1. Sanskritik Ayodhya: Ayodhya is to be developed as the cultural capital of India. As part of the plan, several activities are being carried out. These include establishing majestic monasteries, temples, and ashrams, constructing grand city gates, and undertaking projects like temple museums.

    2. Saksham Ayodhya: Ayodhya is being developed with an aim to create significant employment opportunities through daily jobs, tourism, religious, and cultural activities.

    3. Adhunik Ayodhya: This "holy town" of Ayodhya city is being transformed into a modern city with various amenities, with Initiatives like Smart City, Safe City, Solar City, and Greenfield Township.

    4. Sugmay Ayodhya: The Yogi government is making every effort to make Ayodhya easily accessible. Moreover, devotees can reach this sacred city conveniently through various routes. The plan includes the construction of Maryada Purushottam Shri Ram International Airport, the rejuvenation of Ayodhya Dham Railway Station or the work of connecting Saryu with the inland waterway.

    5. Surmay Ayodhya: The government aims to transform Ayodhya into an "enchanting city". The initiatives include the beautification of various ponds, lakes, and ancient reservoirs in Ayodhya, the rejuvenation of old gardens, the construction of new ones, or even the enhancement of the city's charm through heritage lighting systems that liberate the city from the entanglement of wires.

    6. Bhavnatmak Ayodhya: Every bit of Ayodhya should reflect the feeling of being connected to Shri Ram. Keeping this in mind, the city walls, roadsides and intersections are being culturally equipped.

    7. Swach Ayodhya: A clean Ayodhya is the top priority of the Yogi government. The initiatives to make the city clean range from cleanliness campaigns to the development of drainage and sewer systems.

    8. Ayusham Ayodhya: The health infrastructure of Ayodhya has already been strengthened to provide quality and convenience-based medical facilities to the patients.
