How To Travel With a Wedding Cake?

The cake should be refrigerated for at least a few hours before the trip , and you should also turn on the air conditioning for ten to fifteen minutes before you leave so that the car is chilly enough for the cake. To avoid melting, keep it out of direct sunlight and under a sun shield if possible.

A cake box is a must if you're going to travel with a cake . Sizes, strengths, and prices all vary, but they're really reasonable overall. They're strong enough to hold a wedding cake and cost less than two dollars. Just tape the box together, then use a knife to create a flap in one end to slide the cake in, and finally tape up the other end.

Consider utilizing insulated transportation/cool boxes and placing frozen packs around the sides of your cake box if you need to carry your cake on a very hot summer day or across a long distance.

How to Travel With a 3-tier Cake?

You can travel with a cake that has 3 tiers. It is possible to transport the separate tiers in boxes on a flat surface (like the new flooring) without the risk of breaking anything . You also have the option of transporting the two lower tiers already stacked, but the remaining tiers will need to be disassembled and stacked at the destination.

Cake stands should not be used to transport a cake. If the cake is larger than the usual cake boxes, you may need to construct your own box. You may also utilize the larger boxes sold at stores like Lowe's and Walmart. Easily slip your cake inside the box by cutting a line down the longest, highest side and taping up the ends.

Can You Bring Cakes on a Plane Trip?

The short answer is “ yes ,” and that applies both to local and international flights within the United States. On international flights coming into and leaving the USA, you can also fly with them.

There is no need to worry about bringing a cake through airport security because the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) permits cake to be brought through both carry-on and checked baggage. A cake from the market or one baked at home is both acceptable. If the cake is not already packaged, you should either wrap it in plastic or place it in a container with a tight-fitting lid.

Breaking news, bakery proudly posts hamas-themed cake for four-year-old’s birthday party, prompting mass outcry.

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

A Hamas-themed birthday cake for a four-year-old Australian boy featuring a notorious terrorist surrounded by Palestinian flags has sparked fury.

The Sydney, Australia bakery which made the cake, and proudly posted pictures of it online, has since deleted its social media, with the Australian Federal Police now investigating.

Oven Bakery by Fufu posted images on Tuesday showing the young boy standing beside a large cake decorated with the Palestinian flag and a picture of Abu Ubaida, a spokesman for Hamas, with his finger raised.

The boy was dressed in a headscarf and outfit similar to the figure on the cake as he mimicked the pose.

The masked figure also appeared on a batch of cupcakes adorned with the Palestinian flag.

Initially, the bakery received positive comments for the cake, with people calling the boy “a champion”.

However, criticism soon overshadowed the post, leading the bakery to shut down its Instagram and Facebook pages as opposing religious leaders called out the “indoctrination” of the young boy.

Chief executive of the Australian Jewish Group Robert Gregory spoke out against the bakery for its decision to make a cake featuring a known terrorist and also criticized the child’s family.

“Dressing a child up as a terrorist, including with what appears to be a Hamas headband is reprehensible and a form of child abuse,” he said via the  Daily Telegraph .

“Islamic extremism and radicalization of youth is not just a problem for the Jewish community. It’s a threat to all Australians.

“Australia has seen several recent incidents of Muslim youth allegedly stabbing or plotting to attack other Australians.

“Indoctrination starts at a young age and is similar to what is seen across the Middle East.”

Premier Chris Minns also weighed in on the issue, describing the photos as “horrifying”.

“Hamas is an evil terrorist organization. Kids parties should be innocent and fun, not hateful,” he said.

Alex Ryvchin, the co-chief executive of the Executive Council of Australian Jewry said anybody glorifying terrorist organizations in this way was suffering from “a rare kind of psychosis”.

“It takes a rare kind of psychosis to want to teach infant children that Hamas terrorists are to be admired and emulated,” he said.

“If this is what is happening in some Sydney homes, we should prepare for a generation of violent extremists.

12 Themed Cruises You Should Have On Your Radar In 2024

T aking a cruise is an experience unlike anything else. Days at sea on a ship full of entertainment and relaxation make for a fantastic vacation. But what if you want even more from your cruise? A theme might be what's missing. In addition to all the usual cruise experiences, themed cruises allow fans of a particular artist, lifestyle, hobby (or even animal), to celebrate their passion on the high seas with activities, events, surprises, and sometimes special guests.

There are dozens of themed cruises on offer each year, usually hosted by major cruise lines like Norwegian , Carnival, and Royal Caribbean. But don't let their numbers fool you. According to  Business Insider , themed cruises are rapidly climbing in popularity, and some trips are selling out in record time. That means it's important to find your dream-themed cruise and reserve your tickets as early as possible.

Fortunately, even if they're sold out, most themed cruises will let you join a waiting list, so there's still hope! Here are 12 themed cruises that will set sail in 2024 and are well worth boarding, either now or the next time they hit the high seas.

The Emo's Not Dead Cruise

If you truly know it's not a phase, the Emo's Not Dead Cruise is perfect for you. Gather with fellow emo fans for four days (and nights) of concerts, activities, and even a private party at Great Stirrup Kay in the Bahamas. Over a dozen bands will perform, including Yellowcard, Senses Fail, and Armor for Sleep. Alongside themed activities like a masquerade ball, cruisegoers can also enjoy surprisingly cheerful activities like a bellyflop competition in the ship's pool.

The first Emo's Not Dead cruise was in 2022. Cruisegoer and emo fan TheReelChris shared highlights on  YouTube , calling it "EPIC." Fans in the comments section agree, with Schecterplayer92 adding, "This was one of the best experiences of my life." With a killer lineup and entertaining activities scheduled, it seems like Emo's Not Dead 2024 will also be a rad experience. The cruise will be hosted on the Norwegian Pearl, leaving from Miami on February 26 and returning on March 1, 2024. But what would an emo-related cruise be without a little sadness? Unfortunately, the cruise is already sold out. If you're interested, you can  sign up for the waiting list  and hope.

Meow Meow Cruise

Some of us know that no matter how great a vacation might be, cats would make it even better. Meow Meow Cruise has solved that problem. While guests unfortunately aren't allowed to bring their own furry friends aboard Virgin Voyages' Scarlet Lady, the four-day cruise will give them their feline fix in plenty of other ways.

Activities include cat-themed trivia and a scavenger hunt. But the best part may be communing with fellow cat people (many of whom stroll around the ship wearing cat ears). You'll also be able to mingle with real cats -- one of 2024's ports of call is Key West, where you'll find the Ernest Hemingway Home & Museum and its community of about 60 friendly polydactyl kitties, many of them descended from one of the author's own pets.

It's hard to find reviews for Meow Meow Cruise, but the fact that this themed cruise has been going on annually since 2015 speaks for itself. The 2024 Meow Meow Cruise sets sail from Miami on February 21, with a return date of February 25. Tickets are still available, but to be sure you don't miss out, consider booking right now.

In My Cruise Era

Sure, cruises are great — and cruising is a multi-billion dollar industry — but is anything more popular than Taylor Swift? For those who can't imagine anyone saying "no" to that question, there's no better cruise than In My Cruise Era. While not officially affiliated with Taylor Swift, this themed cruise is a passionate fan homage. Swifties will be able to dress up in their favorite Taylor-inspired looks, exchange friendship bracelets, perform their idol's songs during karaoke sessions, and more. We're also guessing there will be of lots impromptu song breaks throughout the ship from Taylor's extensive catalog.

Royal Caribbean's Allure of the Seas will host this cruise, which sets sail from Miami on October 21, 2024 -- which, as People Magazine points out, is one day after the Eras Tour will be in the city. Fans lucky enough to attend the concert can continue their Taylor euphoria for four more days on the high seas. Since this is a new themed cruise, there aren't any reviews, but based on the positive fan vibes from Eras Tour concerts and movie viewings, among other events, we're guessing it's going to be a great time for Swifties. Swifties must agree, since the cruise is already sold out. Cancellations do happen, though, so hopeful fans can join the waiting list.  Contact the cruise's organizers to sign up.

Disney's Halloween On The High Seas

Go on just about any cruise-related blog or website and you'll see that Disney Cruise Line's Halloween-themed cruise, officially called Halloween on the High Seas, is a popular favorite. As you probably expect from Disney, this themed cruise is perfect for a family vacation , so it's not too scary. The cruise is hosted on multiple Disney Cruise Line ships, and each one is decorated with the care and attention to detail you'll find in most Disney-related enterprises. The Pumpkin Tree is the highlight of the decor, with pumpkins that eventually appear on its branches and transform into lit and unlit jack o'lanterns.

Halloween on the High Seas also features Halloween activities (including a trick-or-treating night) and exclusive Halloween-themed desserts. Disney cruises in general are known for their opportunities to meet the studio's beloved characters, and during the Halloween on the High Seas cruises, some of those characters are in costume. Notably, Disney Cruise Line's official site tells us, Minnie Mouse, Daisy Duck, and Clarabelle Cow will be dressed as the Sanderson Sisters -- who wouldn't want to see that?

This magical mixture of whimsy, fun, and exclusive opportunities is the perfect way to cast a spell on Disney fans of all ages. Luckily, Halloween on the High Seas is held during a number of different times in September and October, so you and your family should be able to find a place on board!

The Hallmark Channel Christmas Cruise

Sure, Hallmark Channel Christmas movies might be a little on the cheesy side, but let's be honest: lots of us dream of being in one in real life. You can get a little of the real-life Hallmark movie experience by visiting some of the movies' filming locations , but now there's a way to have an even more immersive experience: The Hallmark Channel Christmas Cruise.

Passengers will get to meet Hallmark Channel movie stars, attend panels and photo ops, and get to see a new Hallmark Christmas movie before its world premiere. Maybe best of all, passengers can take part in lots of Hallmark Christmas movie-inspired activities, including tree lighting and cookie decorating -- all while wearing their favorite ugly Christmas sweaters.

2024 is the first year of the Hallmark Channel Christmas Cruise. It was originally intended to be just one cruise, but a second one was added after the first one sold out. As of now, two Hallmark Channel Christmas Cruises are scheduled for 2024. Both go from Miami to the Bahamas and back and last four days in November. ... And both are sold out. Hurtigruten Northern Lights Cruises

Themed cruises are often about fandoms and hobbies. But Norway-based cruise line Hurtigruten offers a themed cruise that's about something even bigger: the Northern Lights . There are several Northern Lights-themed cruises out there, including some luxurious options by Cunard. Unfortunately, the Northern Lights aren't always visible, but Hurtigruten stands out by offering a Northern Lights Promise for cruises scheduled between September 26 and March 31 and lasting longer than 11 days. If the Northern Lights aren't visible during your cruise, they'll give you another one. So if you're serious about seeing the Aurora Borealis, this is the company to choose.

The Northern Lights are the focus of Hurtigruten's eponymous cruises, but there are also other things to do on board, including scientific lectures and photography lessons. There are excursions, too -- notably a dog sledding option. Passengers who've taken one of Hurtigruten's cruises unanimously praise the stunning fjords and landscapes you can admire from the ship and during excursions, not to mention their experiences of seeing the Northern Lights. Some warn that the ships aren't as luxurious or modern as many other cruise ships, primarily because Hurtigruten's ships are also functional vessels intended to transport and deliver mail to various points on the Norwegian coast. Still,  Cruise Critic reviewers like cmolaison praise the friendly crew, the surprising level of comfort, and the "stunning vistas" you'll see, saying he and his family "highly recommend" taking a Hurtigruten cruise.

Cruise & Crop Crafting Cruises

If the perfect vacation for you is a combination of R&R and crafting, you're in luck! There are several crafting-themed cruises. One of the most popular is organized by Cruise & Crop, with ships around the world hosting different crafting- and arts-themed trips. This makes them the most accessible themed cruises on our list, with different price ranges, departure points, itineraries, and ports of call. One thing all crafting cruises have in common, though, is groups of like-minded people exploring their creativity amid the other joys of cruising.

For instance, one of Crop & Cruise's 2024 offerings is a Mexican Riviera cruise aboard Royal Caribbean's Navigator of the Seas, featuring scrapbooking and other papercraft classes taught by artist Barb Warne. The ship departs from Los Angeles on April 19, returning April 26. Many Cruise & Crop cruises sell out quickly, so if this idea has sparked both your wanderlust and your creativity, be sure to check their list of 2024 cruises and reserve as soon as you can.

Star Trek: The Cruise

For seven days and nights every year, thousands of Star Trek fans gather to be a part of a fandom extravaganza at sea. Star Trek: The Cruise is an experience that features celebrities aboard (2024's guests include LeVar Burton and Wil Wheaton, among many others), costume and cosplay events, and lots of fun activities.

But what makes Star Trek: The Cruise truly unique is that audience participation is very much encouraged. Passengers and celebrity guests are all considered the crew of one great, big, intergalactic vessel. Passengers get to interact with the guest stars in events like karaoke battles, and stars share parts of their earthly lives with Q&A sessions and even glimpses at other projects they may be involved in.

The first Star Trek: The Cruise was held in 2017 and since then it's been a fan favorite. Star Wars and cruising aficionado Aaron Bossig writes on  Trek Movie.com that many fans go on the cruise every year, and proudly wear t-shirts from the previous ones. He calls Star Trek: The Cruise "an extra special convention experience." 2024's edition will be held on the Mariner of the Seas, departing from Cape Canaveral, Florida, on February 22 and returning on February 29.

Literature Festival At Sea

Once a year, aboard the legendary Queen Mary 2, passengers can mingle with writers, poets, journalists, and critics in a full-blown literary festival in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. Literature Festival at Sea invites writers in all genres to host round table discussions, participate in Q&As revolving around their work and areas of expertise, host workshops, and converse with passengers.

Whether passengers want to participate as much as possible or just attend a few events, the Festival seems to be an excellent addition to a typical Queen Mary 2 voyage. On TripAdvisor , passenger Artemis C writes of her experience at a previous Literature Festival at Sea that "the whole week was a joy".

2024's lineup features crime novelists, journalists, historians, and more, for what's sure to be a fascinating week of discussion and discovery. If you'd like to combine an elegant transatlantic cruise and a literary experience, 2024's Literature Festival at Sea will take place from November 13-20, departing from Southampton, U.K., and arriving in New York. Cunard has also launched an Australian Literature Festival at Sea, scheduled from December 11-16, 2024, on the Queen Elizabeth, which departs from and returns to Sydney.

Chefs Making Waves

Many cruise lines are proud of their food offerings. Some cruises feature dishes created by world-famous chefs, and others even host food and wine festivals. But no culinary cruise event seems quite as, well, fun, as Chefs Making Waves. This culinary-themed cruise will set sail for the first time in 2024. Onboard will be a number of beloved celebrity chefs, including Anne Burrell and the Cake Boss himself, Buddy Valastro. Cooking demos and, of course, food tastings of all kinds (including sit-down meals, desserts, and street food) are on the menu. Best of all, Chefs Making Waves is an all-inclusive cruise, so everyone can eat and drink without having to pay extra!

There will be all of the usual cruise-related fun, from swimming to excursions, to help you work up an appetite. There will also be unique games, with some of the chefs participating in events like bingo and a celebrity chef sing-off. If this sounds like an awesome cruise, you're not the only one who feels that way. Chefs Making Waves will take place from March 25-29, departing from Miami with excursions in Great Stirrup Cay and Nassau, Bahamas ... and it's already sold out. But you can still  sign up for the waiting list . With a little luck, you'll be able to enjoy this delicious, themed cruise experience.

Soul Train Cruise

Imagine a festival with a lineup featuring some of the best soul and R&B acts of all time. Now imagine it's on a relaxing cruise ship. This dream is actually reality -- it's called the Soul Train Cruise. The popular themed cruise will be celebrating its 11th year in 2024 and the lineup is on fire. Dozens of groups and artists will perform, including The Temptations, Boyz II Men, and En Vogue. Passengers can also learn how to dance like people did back in the old school days of Soul Train's TV show, with lessons from some of the show's actual dancers. There will also be wine tastings, Q&A's, comedy shows, and a lot more.

With all of this on offer, it's no surprise that the Soul Train Cruise is sold out. But sign up on the waiting list and keep your calendar free from January 27-February 3, and you may get lucky. If you do, the cruise leaves from Fort Lauderdale, with ports of call in Tortola (British Virgin Islands) and St. Maarten.

The Gothic Cruise

The Gothic Cruise is an annual event held on an ordinary cruise ship. Goths mingle with "norms" but have their own private events on board, mostly DJ sets and concerts. There's also a masquerade ball, with Goths decked out in their finest Victorian-style garb ... as long as it meets ship safety requirements, that is. The cruise's website specifies that simulated weapons aren't allowed and notes that hoop skirts are fine for the ball but not in the ship's dining areas, "due to the close proximity of the tables". And yet, the Goth community thrives on these cruises -- and even gains norm fans along the way.

In a Porthole Magazine article about the Gothic Cruise, longtime attendee Spike Pittman says that many mainstream passengers are wary of the Goths at first, "But by the end they're begging to get into our private events." Some even book their future cruises to coincide with the Gothic Cruise, even if they don't plan on attending every event.

The Gothic Cruise has been held since 1989. Cruising doesn't seem very Goth, but in the end, the article points out, it comes down to what all themed cruises offer: a sense of community (in this case, one that often stays up all night and sleeps during the day). If this moves your little black heart, the 2024 Gothic Cruise will be held on the Norwegian Escape (but book through the Gothic Cruise's website for private event access), departing from Orlando on March 2, and returning March 9.

How Rhubarb Conquered Germany, Then the World

A tongue-twisting rap by a Berlin duo has spotlighted Germans’ love of their springtime produce. Now if only they could find a rhyme for asparagus.

Video player loading

By Sarah Maslin Nir

Sarah Maslin Nir reported from Germany, including from an asparagus theme park.

In the past month, millions of people have found themselves stumbling through the contorted and catchy syllables of a song about, of all things, a woman named Barbara and some rhubarb-loving barbarians who drink beer while getting their beards barbered. In German.

Or more rightly: Rhabarberbarbarabarbarbarenbartbarbierbier.

The hyper-compound words of the popular German tongue twister about Barbara, her “bombastic” rhubarb cake and her hirsute customers shot to inexplicable and extreme popularity this spring, a few months after a pair of comedic musical content creators from Berlin posted a rap version late last year. Their silly ditty has more than 47 million views on TikTok; for a brief moment on some online streaming charts, Barbara beat out Beyoncé. Beyoncé.

“There is a prejudice that, first, Germans don’t have any sense of humor, and second, they do not have fun, and third, their language sounds very aggressive,” said Bodo Wartke, the rap’s lyricist who, along with Marti Fischer, the composer, created the viral “Barbara’s Rhubarb Bar” tune. They spoke on a recent day in their Berlin studio as they giggled and tripped over their own stanzas — which exploit a feature of German grammar that crams nouns together into strings of syllables.

“And we proved them all wrong,” Mr. Wartke said.

But lost in translation, as global copycats stumble through the alliterative story of Barbara, the bar she opens and the pie that made her famous, is a quirk not only of language, but also of German gastronomical culture. Rhubarb is much more than a word in German that sounds a lot like “Barbara”; it is an object of springtime fixation, part of a nationwide fanaticism for eating a small group of particular produce exactly in season.

People sitting around a wooden table enjoying a meal outside.

Put another way: Song or no song, every spring across Germany, rhubarb goes completely viral.

The vegetable (yes, it is a vegetable) is part of a trio of produce that includes strawberries and a particular asparagus varietal that peaks in early spring. Warm weather sets off a frenzy for all things featuring them in a country that still adheres to consumption along the rhythms of the seasons.

In the United States, the convenience of purchasing a summer peach and winter squash year round in the supermarket may have rendered the idea of seasonal produce nearly obsolete. But in Germany, the conception of each foodstuff as a limited-time-only treat is seen not as inconvenient, but rather, as a way to whet appetites.

Come spring, green markets are piled with rhubarb stalks, which are consumed as cake , pastries, preserves and, above all, in a fizzy drink called schorle, a spritzer.

Strawberries also share the fleeting limelight. For a few weeks, they glisten near the cash registers at grocery stores and burst from signs in shops that read, “They’re here!”

In curbside booths shaped like giant strawberries, strawberry sellers hawk cartons of fruit and pots of jam across several cities. They are courtesy of Karl’s, an entrepreneurial berry grower that capitalizes on the craze with a half-dozen — and counting — strawberry-themed amusement parks in northeast Germany.

While rhubarb may be enjoying its pop culture moment, the true star of the German spring is spargel, or asparagus . Theirs is a ghostly pale version of the vegetable grown under a mound of dirt to suppress chlorophyll production, rendering the plant mild in flavor with a fibrous skin.

During the season, Spargelfest, which semiofficially ends on June 24, multicourse spargel-only menus sprout at restaurants. One dish is on every last one: blanched spargel served under a slathering of hollandaise, beside a clutch of new potatoes, a slab of schnitzel and a slice of lemon.

“Rhubarb is very well connected to the springtime. It’s the seasonal food,” said Tobias Hagge, 43, who sings with and manages the Real Comedian Harmonists, who, like Mr. Wartke and Mr. Fischer, specialize in amusing songs — including a circa-1930 ballad about a woman named Veronika, whose beauty makes asparagus grow. (Wink.)

In its heyday nearly a century ago, the song, with its double-entendre, rivaled Barbara’s popularity, Mr. Hagge said. Today, it is his group’s most-requested tune.

“With Germans, we have a very, very unique relationship to asparagus,” Mr. Hagge added. “A lot of foreigners don’t get us.”

On a recent Sunday afternoon in Beelitz, an area just southwest of Berlin known for its prodigious spargel crop, nearly a dozen buses and hundreds of cars packed the parking lot at a roadside asparagus attraction: Winkelmanns Asparagus Farm.

Under the shadow of 10-foot-tall asparagus sculpted from sand, and past a machine called a Spargelschäler, where a team of women fed the stalks into gears that peeled, pared and shot the naked spears out the other end, visitors perused a seasonal produce extravaganza.

Some shopped for spirits with a curl of asparagus bobbing in the bottle like a worm in mezcal, or sampled asparagus iced cream. In a cafeteria beside a stand doing a brisk business selling rhubarb, strawberries and white asparagus by the pound, scores of people tucked into pricey plates of spargel smothered with hollandaise.

“They call it ‘white gold,’” said Mandy Töppner, 42, an executive assistant from Berlin, who was visiting Winkelmanns that afternoon, though not for any real love of the vegetable, she said. Rather, like several people interviewed, she attributed the fixation to something like a German asparagus biological clock: This time of year, it’s simply spargel time. “It’s just hype,” she said.

In their studio in Berlin, Mr. Wartke and Mr. Fischer struggled to understand that hype, and the hype around their own song, which has somehow become an international ear worm. Since its success, they have been invited to appear on Germany’s answer to “Dancing With the Stars,” and there is a grass-roots call for them to represent their country in next year’s Eurovision competition.

But all the singing about rhubarb appears to have done little for the plant itself.

Last season, Germany’s 734 rhubarb farming operations sold the smallest quantity in the past seven years, according to Lisa Kloke, a spokeswoman for Germany’s Federal Association of Fruit and Vegetable Producer Organizations. And she’s not hopeful the song will reverse the trend.

Two-thirds of rhubarb-buying households are over 55 — not the typical TikTok demographic, she said. “The majority of households will not be aware of the song,” she said, “even if it is currently viral on social media.”

Indeed, on his rhubarb farm in Walberberg, just south of Cologne, Stefan Grusgen, 50, a farmer who grows 1,000 tons of the vegetable a year, said he had never heard of the song until he was approached by a reporter. His children, he later found out, knew it by heart.

As the end of rhubarb season approaches, the singers have been hard at work trying to extend their moment; in mid-May, they released a sequel . But if it doesn’t catch on, there’s a backup: Come late summer, morel season begins.

Insider Today

Dear For Love & Money,

I recently got engaged to the love of my life. I'm so excited about the marriage, but also for the wedding! I know how superficial that makes me sound, but I have planned for this day since I was six — there are 72,000 pins on my Pinterest board!

I want to rent out a castle, buy a Vera Wang gown, invite everyone we know, and feed them a four-course meal. I know it's a lot and probably out of budget, but I am not against taking out a loan for it. My parents will pay for some, and my fiancé's parents may be willing to chip in. I think we can scrape together enough to make it happen.

My fiancé is dead set against all of this, however. He says it's about the cost, but I think he's just worried people will think we're irresponsible for spending that much on our wedding. I don't care about other people's opinions or the money! We only get one chance to do this. I don't want to settle for some cheap cake-and-punch affair. How do I convince my fiancé a big wedding is worth it?

Big Dreaming Bride

Dear Big Dreaming Bride,

You mentioned planning your wedding since you were six years old, a story that conjures a precious image — a little girl with her head bowed over bridal magazines, craft scissors and stick glue in hand, a large binder beside her, already planning what will surely be the best day of her life. It's an image so wholesome and adorable that it's been the foundation for the entire wedding industry for decades.

I love this for you and every bride who has lived the legend, including myself. As a child, I, too, lay awake planning my big day and my lacy white gown. I also built and decorated my future mansion, complete with a diamond-encrusted swimming pool and themed bedrooms. I spent a lot of time dreaming up the clothes I would wear someday and wishing on the belly buttons of Treasure Trolls for curly hair (update: it worked).

Like many people, I fantasized about the aesthetic of my future life. That's what my dreams of party planning, decorating, and fashion all came down to: creative expression.

What marriage taught me, however, is that sharing a life means sharing these dreams with someone else. For many people, dreams for the future aren't an artistic outlet. Rather, they are an opportunity to practice financial responsibility and demonstrate how low maintenance they are. In other words, for some people, their big dream is a sensible budget .

That's been the most challenging part of marriage — learning to share my plans with another person with just as much of a right to make decisions as I do. I would suggest you begin practicing this reality now. This marriage, and therefore this wedding, is as much your fiancé's as yours, so he gets just as much say over the decision-making.

In your letter, you wrote, "He says it's about the cost, but I think he's just worried people will think we're irresponsible for spending that much on our wedding." Maybe you're right. Perhaps he is scared of how his parents will respond to him taking out a wedding loan  to finance his wedding, or perhaps he is telling the truth, and he simply doesn't want to spend that much money. Either way, his reasons are irrelevant. He has told you how he wants to do things, and it's important that you respect his wishes.

Gender stereotypes tell us that the groom's only real wedding responsibilities are to shoot a few "want to be a groomsman?" texts, have a tailor take his measurements, and show up at the ceremony on time. But his desire to keep things small tells me he has real opinions. That doesn't mean you need to delete your Pinterest board and settle for a cake-and-punch reception; this is your wedding, too.

There has to be an option between a castle and a church basement, and that option is where you will find the perfect compromise. Insist on searching for this compromise together. Show him your Pinterest board and encourage him to make one of his own. Do some pricing together, and then build a budget based on what you learn.

You two can look for creative ways to throw your dream wedding on a budget. I promise if you're both flexible and committed to helping each other pull off the big day, you'll have a blast doing it. And what better way to begin a marriage than with teamwork and a whole lot of fun?

Rooting for you,

For Love & Money

Ruby, ruby, ruby! Virgin Atlantic celebrates Ruby Anniversary in style with customers flying in June

  • 22 nd June 2024 is Virgin Atlantic’s Ruby anniversary, marking 40 years of the airline shaking up the travel industry
  • To celebrate its 40 th birthday in style, Virgin Atlantic is introducing tasty treats and exciting surprises throughout June
  • The airline has always prided itself on providing customers with choice and a unique, personalised offering
  • A special 40 th birthday logo will be debuted, inspired by Virgin Atlantic’s heritage and its first ever aircraft

Forty years ago on 22 nd June 1984, Virgin Atlantic carried its first customers from London to New York, with the promise of something exciting and different. The airline has continued to shake up the travel industry ever since and will showcase some incredible initiatives for its customers to enjoy in June. A unique 40 th birthday logo will appear across new products in June, inspired by the bold stripe on Virgin Atlantic’s first aircraft, Maiden Voyager, bringing a flash of red to the grey world of air travel. These special touches set Virgin Atlantic apart back then, today and into the future, with its personalised service delivered by its incredible people.

It all starts with Virgin Atlantic’s award-winning flagship London Heathrow Clubhouse, which first opened its doors in 2006. Upper Class customers will be able to sit back and relax in the Clubhouse with a special 40 th birthday beer. Available only at the London Heathrow Clubhouse, from 1 st June and beyond, the beer is a zesty pale ale with a smooth finish. Brewed in Wimbledon with English Maris Otter and Cara malt, it has a juicy aroma that punches above its weight.

Across all Clubhouses, a new, carefully curated cocktail will be available from 1 st June, named Maiden Voyager, the same name given to Virgin Atlantic’s first plane that flew between London Gatwick and Newark in 1984. A fruity and fun cocktail, Maiden Voyager is a modern take on the iconic 80s ‘Woo Woo’ cocktail, including vodka, peach puree, fresh lime, grenadine, egg white and peach bitters. This is sure to make customers’ taste buds tingle and will also be sticking around beyond the birthday. It also wouldn’t be a birthday without some cake and music to get the party going, so a signature 40 th birthday cake will be served across Virgin Atlantic Clubhouses; a red velvet sponge with whipped cream and berries. All Clubhouses will add some hit 80s tracks into their playlists to commemorate the birthday celebrations!

Virgin Atlantic is also diving deep into its heritage and marking its Ruby anniversary with a magnificent display of its cabin crew uniforms from the last four decades. The display will take pride of place in the London Heathrow Clubhouse, showcasing archived uniforms designed by the likes of Arabella Pollen, Elizabeth and David Emmanuel and John Rocha, as well as the current iconic design, honouring the late Vivienne Westwood, which debuted in 2014.

The surprises don’t stop there, because Virgin Atlantic’s signature cocktail is soaring to new heights. The Virgin Redhead is now available onboard in all cabins for the first time, complimentary in Upper Class and for purchase in Premium and Economy. The delicious drink has long been a favourite in the Clubhouse and is making its onboard debut with bright red flair, featuring gin, mixed berries, a twist of lemon and pop of prosecco. Lovers of the cocktail will be thrilled to know that it’s a permanent addition to the onboard drinks list.

Virgin Atlantic’s renowned Mile High Afternoon Tea is also getting a ruby makeover. Customers on select flights where Mile High Tea is served will ponder over the new 40th commemorative themed menus before the spectacular spread is placed before them on a themed tray liner or box.  In Upper Class, alongside a selection of savoury finger sandwiches will be an elderflower & blueberry scone, a lemon and blackcurrant slice of birthday cake with a white chocolate disc and edible flowers, and a raspberry macaron with the airline’s 40 th birthday logo topper. Both Upper Class and Premium Mile High Teas will be served alongside a Virgin Redhead. The raspberry macaroon will also be served in Premium, with a lemon and bergamot polenta mini cake. Economy customers will enjoy a refreshing glass of English sparkling wine by The Uncommon, with a beetroot swirl mini bagel, warm scone and lemon drizzle birthday cake topped with Funfetti.

Last but by no means least, the airline has partnered with Bottega to release a limited number of special edition prosecco bottles available in 75cl and 20cl, with a bespoke 40 th birthday design. The larger bottles will be available to pre-order through Virgin Atlantic’s Retail Therapy , whereas the smaller bottles will be available for purchase onboard in all cabins from late June. Stock is limited, so don’t hang around!

Siobhan Fitzpatrick, Chief Experience Officer at Virgin Atlantic commented, “As we gear up to our Ruby anniversary, we are delighted to celebrate this milestone with our loyal customers, in our Clubhouses and onboard. For four decades, we’ve been there for the moments that matter and are committed to giving our customers the very best experience in the skies.

“In our 40 th year, our spirit is stronger than ever and the things that set us apart will keep us ahead. We look forward to the next 40 years as we continue flying to some of the greatest cities on earth, finding new ways to delight our customers with brilliantly different experiences, delivered by our amazing people.”
