Can I travel to China? Travel rules from the UK explained

By Connor Sturges

Shanghai China

In December 2019, a cluster of Chinese citizens in Wuhan reported mysterious flu-like symptoms in what became the start of a pandemic that would change the world as we knew it. Countries closed their borders and leading scientists embarked on a mission to create effective vaccines, leading many travellers to rediscover the wonders on their doorsteps and the concept of the great British staycation .

Fast forward to January 2023, and China is welcoming tourists once again. Hundreds of millions of Chinese citizens will be hoping to travel domestically to join family ahead of Chinese New Year and see in the Year of the Rabbit, while curious international travellers are adding the country to their bucket lists once again for the year ahead.

These are the entry requirements, and the UK government's advice, as of Monday 9 January 2023.

Can I travel to China from the UK, and back again?

Yes, with some restrictions. After almost three years of Covid stalling China’s tourism industry, Thursday 5 January 2023 marked the opening of China’s borders to the world once again. However, as of Monday 9 January 2023, China remains in the midst of a Covid surge, meaning strict rules are in place for travellers wishing to visit the country.

What are the entry requirements for China?

Since international flights to China resumed on Thursday 5 January 2023, all travellers are required to take a pre-departure PCR Covid test in the 48 hours prior to travel.

Once confirmed, a negative PCR test result can be submitted by filling in a health declaration form on the  China customs website . Negative results can also be submitted on the China customs app or a registered WeChat account.

Travellers who display symptoms of fever on arrival in China may be asked to take a further antigen test. Self-quarantine will be imposed in the event of a positive test result and mild symptoms, while travellers can be sent to medical institutions for treatment if symptoms are more severe.

The UK government website recommends that all travellers pack a supply of medication to treat flu-like symptoms. It is also recommended that accommodation is stocked with additional food, water and medical supplies in case you are mandated to isolate.

Can I travel to China Travel rules from the UK explained

What are the rules on returning to the UK from China?

All travellers aged 12 and over must obtain a negative pre-departure Covid test result no more than two days prior to travelling back from mainland China to the UK. Results are checked by airlines and Border Force officials in the UK. These rules currently apply to travellers on direct and indirect flights, and those arriving in England as a final destination plus anyone transiting through England.

Test results can be provided in the form of a printed document, an email, or text message, and must contain the following information:

  • A full name that matches the name on travel documents
  • Date of birth or age
  • Result of the test
  • Date the test sample was collected or received by the test provider
  • Name of the test provider and their contact details
  • Confirmation of the type of test taken, which can be a lateral flow or PCR

NHS-provided tests cannot be used as pre-departure tests. In addition to the required pre-departure tests when returning from mainland China, travellers arriving at London Heathrow Airport may be asked to undertake a voluntary test on arrival, as part of the UK government’s monitoring of potential new variants.

Are there any other entry requirements for travel to China?

According to the latest UK government website, travellers wishing to visit China on a British Citizen passport can do so by:

  • Obtaining an “Invitation Letter” or “Verification Confirmation of Invitation” issued by a provincial foreign affairs office or department of commerce (M or F visa)
  • Obtaining a “Notification Letter of Foreigners Work Permit” (Z visa)
  • Visiting a family member with a Z, M, or F visa
  • Intending to visit a family member who is a Chinese citizen or who holds a Chinese permanent residence permit
  • Qualifying for a high-level talent (R) visa
  • Qualifying for a transport crew (C) visa

Visa applications must be made, in person, at a Visa Application Centre. Note that biometric data (scanned fingerprints) has to be provided as part of the application process. Chinese Visa Application Centres in London , Manchester and Edinburgh are operating, but with limited opening hours. The Belfast centre remains closed.

More details, including the process for submitting forms for those still eligible, can be found on the Chinese Embassy website.

For more information and updated rules, visit the   UK government website before travelling. We also recommend ensuring you have valid   travel insurance with Covid cover before taking any trips.

Latest UK-China travel updates – flights, entry requirements and visa processes

  • 6th February 2023
  • Chamber News

Following the relaxing of pandemic-related travel restrictions, including quarantine requirements for inbound travellers, British and Chinese airlines are resuming their regular services to China for the first time in over two years.

The British Chamber looks forward to increased business engagement in 2023 as a result of these changes – read on to find out more about the latest flights available, entry policies and visa requirements.

Flights between the UK and China increasing

British Airways (BA) and Virgin Atlantic have both announced that they will reinstate their daily flights to China – BA’s flight Shanghai-bound flight will depart from Heathrow on 23 April, while Beijing-bound flights will begin from 3 June, operating four flights a week.

Virgin Atlantic will also resume flights to Shanghai, with the first flight leaving on 1 May. Several Chinese airlines are also operating direct flights to China, including Air China (to Beijing), China Southern (to Guangzhou), and China Eastern (to Shanghai).

There are of course many other flight routes to China involving transfer via Europe, Hong Kong, or other destinations – if taking a non-direct route, please note pandemic/visa requirements in the transit country as well.

Click here to read more about the new flights (in English), or visit airlines’ websites directly for full ticketing information.

Entry requirements to China

As of 8 January 2023, all travellers to China need a negative PCR test to enter the country – this should be done within 48 hours of your flight TO CHINA  – please note these timings if you are transiting through a third country. Tests are available at major UK airports including Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester and Edinburgh airports, or you can search for a local provider. Companies such as Randox have multiple locations across the UK providing PCR tests for travel – click here to read the full list of Randox testing locations.

This test result will be checked upon your departure from the UK, and a physical printout is recommended. You will also be asked to fill in a Health Declaration Form from China Customs on arrival in China – a QR code will be available to scan and complete this form upon arrival.

Please note all children over 2 years old also require a negative PCR test result.

Entry requirements to the UK

If you are travelling to the UK from China, you are also required to take a pre-departure Covid test (as of 5 January 2023) for anyone aged 12 and over. Please note the test result must include ENGLISH translation – please check in advance with your local hospitals to find one which can provide testing in English.

The test can be either printed or in the form of an email or text message – to read the full list of requirements, please click here to visit the UK government website.

Travelers from any region bound for Hong Kong will no longer need to take pre-flight COVID-19 tests (no PCR test, no RAT test) from April 1.

There is also no need for any tests when traveling from Hong Kong to the Chinese Mainland. Hong Kong could be a good gateway for your China trip. See suggestions on China Itineraries from Hong Kong (from 1 Week to 3 Weeks).

Macau Entry Requirement

From August 30, travelers from any region bound for Macau will no longer need to take pre-flight COVID-19 tests (no PCR test, no RAT test).

There is also no need for any tests when traveling from Macau to the Chinese Mainland.

Inbound and outbound international flights in the week beginning March 6th rose by more than 350% compared with a year earlier, to nearly 2,500 flights, according to Chinese flight tracking data from APP Flight Master.

At present, there are one or two direct flights a week from New York to Shanghai, Los Angeles to Beijing, Seattle to Shanghai, London to Guangzhou, etc.

There are also many flight options with stopovers that are more frequent and affordable. Testing at transit airports is now not required!

The Coronavirus outbreak in China has subsided. China looks like it did in 2019 again. No special measures (like PCR tests or health codes) are required when traveling around China. All attractions are open as normal.

Wearing a mask is not mandatory when traveling. In hotels, masks are off for the most part. But in some crowded places, such as airports or subway stations, many people still wear masks.

Weather-wise, the best times to visit China are spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October), when most of the popular places have their most tourism-friendly weather, except for the "golden weeks" — the first week of May and of October — when most attractions are flooded with Chinese tourists.

If you are looking for smaller crowds, favorable prices, and still good weather, you should consider March and April or September.

Tourism in cultural and historical destinations like Beijing, Shanghai, and Xi'an is hardly affected by weather conditions. They are suitable to be visited all year round.

How do I get a visa for China?

BEIJING - OCT 18: people hike the Great Wall on October 18, 2015 in Beijing, China. The Ming dynasty walls measure 8,850 km in length, from China's East coast till the Gobi desert in the West.

Stretching from the steppes of Central Asia and Mongolia to the tropical jungles of Laos and Vietnam, China is a land of endless travel opportunities. Though the country shut up tight after the world’s first COVID-19 lockdown in Wuhan in January 2020, China is making fast progress towards its 85% vaccination target and international tourism is expected to resume by 2022.

Here is everything you need to know about obtaining a tourist visa for China, based on the requirements in place before the pandemic, which are likely to remain when China reopens to international tourists. Always check the latest regulations with the Chinese authorities before you travel.

Who Needs a Chinese Tourist Visa?

The majority of foreign nationals require a tourist visa (also known as an "L visa") to enter and visit mainland China, though a few nationalities are granted visa-free entry. L visas are easy to obtain from Chinese embassies and consulates around the world, though the visa application process in some countries has been outsourced to a local branch of the Chinese Visa Application Service Center – their website has a handy list of locations and other useful country-specific information. To avoid the tedious bureaucracy when applying in person, many people obtain a visa via a tour operator or visa agent.

Can I travel visa-free to China?

Holders of passports from a handful of countries can travel visa-free to mainland China for tourism or business purposes. Citizens of Brunei, Japan and Singapore get 15 days, citizens of the Bahamas, Barbados, Belarus, Ecuador, Fiji, Grenada, Qatar, Serbia, Seychelles, Tonga, and the United Arab Emirates get 30 days, citizens of Mauritius get 60 days, and citizens of Armenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and San Marino get 90 days.

Who can get a transit visa?

Visitors from 49 countries – including the US, Canada, UK, the EU, Japan, New Zealand, Canada, Brazil and Argentina – can spend up to 144 hours (6 days) transiting in China without a visa if they arrive by air, ship or train at selected Chinese cities. The list of cities includes Beijing, Shanghai, Xi’an, Guilin, Guangzhou, Chongqing, Chengdu, Xiamen, Wuhan, Kunming and Qingdao, opening up some interesting quick trip opportunities.   To be eligible, travelers must hold a passport valid for at least 3 months after entry and proof of onward travel to a third country, or to Hong Kong or Macau . These visas start counting down at 12.01 am on the date following arrival and there are restrictions on where you can travel within each region. Check with your nearest Chinese embassy or consulate for the current list of eligible nationalities, entry points and specific movement areas.

People walking on the Bund in Shanghai

What about Hong Kong and Macau?

Most nationalities do not require a tourist visa for stays of up to 90 days in either Hong Kong or Macau. British visitors to Hong Kong get 180 days, and South Africans get 30 days. To travel from here into China proper, a standard tourist visa is required. These are fairly easy to obtain via China Travel Service in Hong Kong.

Since May 2018, the Chinese resort island of Hainan has offered 30-day visa-free entry to citizens of 59 countries including the US, Canada, the EU, the UK, New Zealand, Malaysia and Singapore. You can’t leave Hainan island and travel to mainland China on this visa – if you want to roam deeper into China, you'll need a standard tourist visa.

How about Tibet?

To travel to Tibet by air, road or train, you'll need both a China tourist visa and a Tibet Tourism Bureau (TTB) permit. To obtain this mandatory travel document you must book a guide for your entire trip and pre-arrange private transport for trips outside Lhasa. No direct applications are accepted, which effectively means that Tibet can only be visited on an organized tour.

How to apply for a Chinese tourist visa

By far the most straightforward option is to apply in your home country. If your country of residence is different, the Chinese authorities may charge an extra processing fee for non-citizens. Either way, you’ll need to fill out a form giving a proposed itinerary for your trip (it’s advisable to never mention Xinjiang and Tibet in your application), plus a flight ticket, and proof of accommodation booked for your first night in China.

Some embassies require extra documentation, such as an invitation letter from a person or a company in China, bank statements, and documents proving your employment record. And your passport needs to be valid for at least 6 months beyond the expiry date of your visa.

Remember that it can be hard to obtain a Chinese tourist visa from an embassy or consulate outside your home country. Caravanistan publishes a useful list of which Chinese embassies accept applications from third-country citizens.

How much does a China tourist visa cost?

The cost of a Chinese tourist visa varies depending on the type of visa, the length of stay, the number of entries allowed, and your nationality. Most tourists pay around US$35 for a single entry visa valid for 30 days from the day you enter China. Reflecting frosty relations between China and some foreign governments, UK citizens pay £151, US citizens pay US$140, Canadian citizens pay C$142, Australian citizens pay A$109 and French, German, Italian, Dutch and Spanish citizens pay €126.

Some nationalities are entitled to long-term multiple-entry visas that allow travelers to visit China for stints of 30 to 120 days throughout the duration of the visa. Note these are not residence permits and do not grant any right to live or work in China. Citizens of the US, Canada, Argentina and Israel can obtain tourist visas with a validity of up to ten years, Brazilians and South Africans are eligible for tourist visas valid for up to five years, while citizens of the UK can get tourist visas lasting two years. Contact your local Chinese embassy or consulate for the latest fees for long-term visas.

How long is a Chinese visa valid for?

Regular China tourist visas are valid for 30 days and must be used within three (or six, if double-entry) months of their date of issue. Never overstay your visa: the fine is ¥500 a day, with the possibility of being deported and banned from re-entering China for the next five years. If you think you'll need to stay longer, start the process of applying for a visa extension well before your visa expires.

Cyclist passing hills in Yangshuo, Guilin

Can I extend my Chinese visa?

Chinese visas can be extended once without too much difficulty at the Public Security Bureau (PSB) offices found in larger Chinese towns and cities, though an extension is not guaranteed. The process takes between 2 and 7 working days, the fee is ¥160 (or ¥760/500 for US/UK citizens). You can only extend your stay for as long as the duration of your original visa. You’ll need to provide your original passport, two photos and a receipt from your accommodation in the town where you are applying for your extension.

Because of the complicated permit system, extending your stay in Tibet is impossible, and Xinjiang, Beijing and Shanghai can also be tricky places to extend a standard tourist visa. The Caravanistan website has some useful visa extension reports from travelers. A second extension is harder to get, and a third extension is extremely unlikely.

Until December 31, 2025 , ordinary passport holders of France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, Malaysia, Ireland, Switzerland, Hungary, Austria, Belgium, Luxembourg, Australia, New Zealand, and Poland can enjoy a 15-day visa-free entry to China .

You can start planning your trip to China now! We will provide you with a flexible, tailor-made private tour of China .

China opened its borders to tourists on March 15, 2023. If you are planning to visit China, it's important to understand the entry and exit requirements and procedures that apply to international travelers.

Now, inbound and outbound travelers no longer need to complete the China Health Declaration Form or provide a negative COVID-19 test result, either.

China Entry Requirements

To enter China, you must have a valid passport and a China visa unless you are eligible for a visa-free entry or a visa-on-arrival.

Note: Though you are not required to complete the China Health Declaration Card and provide the COVID-19 test result before entering China Mainland, you still need to inform the customs and cooperate for health checks if you have symptoms like fever, cough, difficulty breathing, vomiting, diarrhea, rash, or if you've been diagnosed with a contagious disease.

Customs Procedures

China's custom channels are divided into two types: the red channel (also called the tax channel) and the green channel (also called a free channel).

Red Channel

Foreign travelers usually enter China through the red channel. They must declare first to customs after filling in the passenger baggage declaration form and can enter after the registration at customs.

The completed customs declaration form must be presented again when leaving China. The form must be filled in truthfully and accurately, and those who provide false information or fail to declare items will be subject to legal action by customs once identified.

The items exceeding the maximum limit listed in the document table should be processed according to other relevant provisions.

Green Channel

Foreign personnel who have been granted a diplomatic visa-passport or courtesy visa-passport by the Chinese authorities or granted free-of-examination courtesy can choose the green channel. But they have to show their credentials to the customs and the declaration document table filled according to the requirements.

Hygiene Quarantine Requirements for Entering China

Foreigners entering China must truthfully fill in health declaration forms as requested by border quarantine departments. Failure to report infectious diseases may result in punishment for evading quarantine and prevention from entering China upon identification. Those who have entered China without reporting an infectious disease may be ordered to leave in advance.

Infectious patients from affected areas must present a valid certificate of immunization-related diseases (commonly known as the "yellow book"). If they do not have a valid certificate, the Frontier Health and Quarantine infected organs will run a test for six days from the day they leave the infected environment.

Commodities from areas that may have been contaminated by infectious diseases or become media articles of epidemic diseases are subject to health and sanitation inspection and quarantine treatment.

The following individuals are not allowed to enter China:

A. Those who have been deported from China are under the regulated age.

D. Those who have mental illnesses or have leprosy, AIDS, venereal diseases, open tuberculosis, and other infectious diseases.

E. Those who cannot afford what is needed in China.

A. Those who have no valid passports, certificates, or visas.

B. Those who have forged, defaced, or other people's passports or certificates.

C. Those who refuse to be inspected.

    China Visa Requirements for Brits

China is a communist country famous for its bureaucracy and endless red tape.

It is advisable to arrive equipped with as much documentation as possible and with more than the minimum requirement of 6 months left to run on passports.

Visa rules and regulations have undergone numerous changes in recent years, and may change without much advance warning.

Here’s how things currently stand with China visa requirements for Brits…

To acquire a visitor visa — known as an ‘L’ visa — you will need to provide a copy of your passport, full travel itinerary or an invitation letter from a Chinese citizen, proof that you have sufficient funds for the duration of your visit, a completed visa application form with colour photo, and evidence of onward travel.

L visas are valid for 90 days and can be obtained from Chinese embassies, consulates, Chinese diplomatic missions, or a Chinese Visa Application Centre.

Processing the visa application normally takes around 4 days, and costs £151.

    move to china from uk

A work or ‘Z’ visa is issued to foreigners intending to stay and work in China for periods longer than 3 months.

The visa itself only covers a stay of 30 days, during which time you must go through the process of getting a temporary residence permit with the aid of your employer, which will extend your work visa for up to 5 years depending on the length of your work contract.

Close family members can enter also China with this visa.

To apply for a work visa you will need a copy of your passport, a completed China work visa application form with recent photo, plus a work permit obtained from your Chinese employer.

As with the visitor visa, processing the visa application normally takes around 4 days, and costs £151.

    Permanent Residency

China’s green card is a permanent residency permit which can be notoriously tricky for foreigners to obtain.

In order to get one you will need to be either married to a Chinese citizen and living with them in China for at least 5 years, or have made stable and significant investment in China for three years in a row plus a sound taxation record.

Alternatively, you must have been employed in a high level post such as deputy general manager, deputy director, academic professor or researcher for more than four years in a row, along with a solid tax record, or make a major contribution to China, or possess a skill specially needed by China.

If you fulfil one of these criteria, you can apply for permanent residency with your passport and completed application form plus the relevant documentation which may include things such as health certificate, proof of financial investment, employment record, proof of marriage or household registration.

Once obtained, your Chinese green card will entitle you to enter and exit China without a visa for a period of either 5 or 10 years.

    Way of Life in China

    move to china

China boasts a strong and vibrant culture and a booming economy, and offers expats an exciting and culturally rich lifestyle — but one with aspects that some foreigners may find challenging.

British expats living in China benefit from high wages and a low cost of living, but Chinese cities (where the vast majority of expats reside) are huge, densely populated, polluted, and chaotic, which can be a little overwhelming for some.

That said, expat communities in the cities are friendly, active and thriving, offering up the possibility for a lively social life.

Chinese cities are pretty cosmopolitan, with a wide range of entertainments, regular sporting events, excellent nightlife and a buzzing music scene, and fantastic restaurants.

Away from the cities, China’s spectacular and diverse geography provides endless natural landscapes to explore, from the flaming mountains of the north east, to the waterfalls, glaciers, forests and rivers of Sichuan Province, and the complex geological structures and mysterious misty landforms of Zhangjiajie National Forest Park or the dramatic wide gorges of Yangtze River. . China is a communist country, with a high level of government presence in the lives of its citizens, and with internet, TV and other media being strictly censored so as not to expose people to ‘harmful’ content, and for some expats this can take some getting used to, as well as occasionally causing issues with communicating with friends and family back home. Just try accessing Facebook for starters…

The Chinese people remain highly family orientated as well as being generally welcoming to foreigners.

Food is a massive part of Chinese culture, and the Chinese spend hours lingering in restaurants and bars, chatting and eating delicious local cuisine.

As well as excellent Chinese restaurants, big cities have an abundance of western fast food joints and restaurants, so you don’t have to compromise on your favourite comfort foods.

English is not widely spoken, and it is critical to learn some Mandarin if you want to benefit from everything life in China has to offer.

Take a look at this video for some good practical tips on laying down roots in China:

    Getting Around

If you need to travel long distance within this immense country, air travel is your best option. Thanks to China’s rapid growth in recent decades, there is an extensive and continually expanding air network in place, and domestic flights are good value, although delays are common.

Along with travelling by plane, China’s comprehensive rail network is an excellent way to get around — it’s fast, efficient, and dependable. Ticket prices are reasonable, and there are plenty of high speed time saving options available. Trains are comfortable and sleeper trains are a good option for longer journeys.

Buses are another good option, and allow access to certain areas of the country which can’t be reached by train. Most buses are comfortably equipped, with toilets and sleeper bunks on long distance routes, with tickets costing even less than train tickets.

When travelling around locally, most cities have a speedy metro or light rail system, or a slower city bus system.

Both services are inexpensive and operate from early in the morning to around 10 pm. However like most city public transport networks, these services can be packed with passengers — particularly at peak times. T

axis are also a good way to get around town, as they are easy to find and prices are low. If you’re feeling fit, travel by bicycle is another good option.

It’s easy to rent a bike by the day or by the hour from train stations or youth hostels in Chinese cities, and this mode of transport also gives you the freedom to explore the surrounded countryside outside of the city.

    brits in china

    Driving in China

Driving around China can be hazardous to say the least, and most expats choose to rely on other modes of transport to get around.

Chinese drivers have a tendency to ignore the rules of the road, and there is a high accident and fatality rate. Cities experience frequent gridlock, making getting from A to B a slow and trying experience.

In addition to this, road signs are most often written in the Chinese language or characters, making them unintelligible if you’re not at ease with the native tongue.

Hiring a car is a complicated business for expats in China, and is currently only possible in the cities of Beijing and Shanghai, and can be costly.

If you do manage to get your hands on a set of wheels, you’ll need to have a residence permit and temporary driving license in order to use them, as international driving licenses are not sufficient.

These can be obtained from the Department of Motor Vehicle Administration and last for a duration of 3 months. If you want to continue driving for any longer than this you will have to apply for an official Chinese driving license.

    Weather in China

As you would imagine in such a huge country, the weather in China varies greatly between regions.

Eastern and southern areas experience a tropical monsoon climate, with hot, humid summers with temperatures of over 30 degrees Celsius, cool winters, and plenty of storms during the rainy season.

In contrast, the north eastern parts of the country see hot, dry summers and icy winters with temperatures as low as -20 degrees Celsius.

Southern, western, and central China are susceptible to serious flooding, as well as earthquakes. In general though, most of China has a climate with cold and dry winters, and hot, wet summers.

    Cost of Living in China

The cost of day to day living in China will vary depending on where you choose to make your home — like elsewhere in the world, living in the city is more expensive than living in rural areas — although generally the cost of local goods including fresh foods, clothes, electrical items, and entertainment is low.

That said, if you want to continue your western lifestyle whilst living here, you need to be prepared to pay, as western goods are imported, and therefore more costly than back in the UK.

    moving to china

Eating out is a big part of Chinese culture, and eating in restaurants is an affordable option.

Bars charge prices similar to those in Britain.

If you’re living and working in China it’s best to negotiate a housing allowance with your employer to cover your accommodation costs, as rental prices can be high — particularly in central city areas.

The cost of a decent, furnished 2 bedroom apartment in the city will set you back anywhere between 4,500 and 13,000 RMB per month (equivalent to between around £500 and £1450 per month).

Utility prices are very affordable, averaging out at around 300 RMB or £35 per month for a 2 bed apartment.

There are a number of healthcare options in China, from public hospitals to international hospitals and private clinics.

The cost and quality of public medical care varies dramatically throughout the country, and the public health care system is largely considered substandard, although some large public hospitals in major cities do offer medical care on a par with the western standard – at an additional cost.

Most expats choose to opt for private healthcare which offers a high standard of medical treatment, however this does cost at least double what you pay at a public hospital.

Thankfully many employers offer private healthcare insurance as part of their employment package, but if you aren’t able to benefit from such a deal, you’re best bet is to take out your own private healthcare policy.

There are various plans available depending on your age and physical fitness, but you can expect to pay anywhere between 5500 RMB and 20,000 RMB (around £600 to £2250) for a basic annual policy.

    move to china from uk

The Chinese people place huge importance on education as part of their culture, and as a result the Chinese education system is one of the most highly regarded in the world.

Chinese public and private schools have gruelling schooling techniques, and teach only in Chinese. There are excellent international schools in the big cities — notably in Beijing and Shanghai — but waiting lists can be lengthy and application processes tough.

Fees for these highly reputable schools are extremely high, often costing more than £25,000 a year, although these costs are sometimes partially covered as part of an employment contract.

An alternative option for children of expats living in China is home schooling. Although this is frowned upon by the government, this is fast becoming a popular way for expat parents to avoid the exorbitant costs and long waiting lists of international schools, and some expat parents are even starting up their own pre-schools.

    Popular Areas for Brits

Boasting some of the world’s finest cuisine, Hong Kong is sure to put a spell on you with it’s glittering high rise skyline, characterful neighbourhoods, splendid harbour, cutting edge culture, and unsurpassed shopping venues.

It’s also more Western friendly than much of mainland China, being as it was a British colony not that long ago, and so promises to be less of a culture shock.

    brits in china

Expect ‘little green man’ road crosses, red double decker buses and even branches of M&S.

Because of its history, its people have a more clearly defined independent spirit and individualism than those on the Mainland.

The capital and cultural heart of the People’s Republic of China, beautiful Beijing effortlessly mixes it’s extraordinary history with the contemporary.

The exotic lure of the mysterious Forbidden City combines with innovative modern architecture, incredible museums, galleries, and performing arts, and sublime restaurants.

Glamorous Shanghai sits seductively astride the Huangpu River, lining its shores with sparkling skyscrapers.

This is a exciting city bursting with designer boutiques, mouth watering restaurants, chic bars and clubs, and elegant culture, but with colonial roots that can still be seen in the twisting narrow back streets and traditional markets.

    move to shanghai

The ultimate symbol of China’s phenomenal recent economic growth, Shenzhen is a city transformed into a dynamic metropolis where business is booming.

Electrifying nightlife, gourmet cuisine, lush parks and beaches, shopping opportunities to rival Hong Kong, charming urban villages, and much more awaits expats in Shenzhen.

Sometimes described as China’s own Silicon Valley, Shenzhen is the place to come if you’re looking for software engineering work.

Stroll along Guangzhou’s pleasant leafy streets and enjoy the delightful colonial architecture, dive into an authentic eatery for a dim sum banquet, and visit ancient mosques and temples, or head over to New Town for vibrant nightlife, a trip to the opera, or take a cruise on the magnificent Pearl River.

Famed for its giant Pandas, Chengdu is a city with a diverse culture popular with expats from all over the globe who come for the laid back vibe, spicy Sichuan cuisine, quaint teahouse culture, numerous scenic spots, and lively nightlife.

Jobs in China for British Expats

Job prospects for expats in China are generally good.

Speaking Mandarin can be a huge boon as the best-paying jobs in China generally require the ability to speak the language, but even English-only speakers can find well paid work with one of the myriad multinational companies operating in big cities such as Beijing and Shanghai, Hong Kong, Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Tianjin.

Wherever possible it is strongly advised to secure employment before arriving in China due to visa requirements.

Teaching jobs abound for expats looking to move to this progressive country, or alternatively Brits with skills in high demand sectors such as advertising, IT, engineering, marketing and sales, finance and banking, manufacturing, technology, and tourism stand a strong chance of finding a suitable position — the more highly skilled you are, the more likely it is that you will get hired.

That’s everything you need to know about moving to China from the UK — are you tempted to make the move?

Later this summer, Joe Biden and Donald Trump will become the official Democrat and Republican candidates for the 2024 Presidential Election. Until now, the campaigning has been via soundbites and speeches conducted at arm's length but they met head-to-head for the first live televised debate of the campaign on CNN on Thursday, June 27.

More than 73 million people watched the first presidential debate between Trump and Biden in September 2020 and, although that number may not be beaten this time, the 90-minute long slugfest will still have pulled in more viewers than almost any other show this year.

The rules regarding qualification and the format of the debate can be found below. Read on to find where you can watch the first U.S. Presidential Debate from anywhere in the world, with plenty of free live streams available.

Travelling abroad for work or on vacation and want to access the coverage at home? Don't panic. Just use one of the best VPN services.  NordVPN is our top pick of the options.

Is this early for the first U.S. Presidential Debate of a campaign?

The debate was the earliest of its kind in U.S. electoral history. Since the initial such broadcast between John F. Kennedy and Richard Nixon in 1960, these opening salvos between presumptive candidates of the two major parties have tended to take place in September or October. This extra time ensures that both candidates are in for a long and gruelling battle for the White House.

The 2024 CNN Presidential Debate – Qualification Requirements

In order to qualify [to take part in the live televised debate], candidates had to satisfy the requirements outlined in Article II, Section 1 of the U.S. Constitution to serve as president, as well as file a formal statement of candidacy with the Federal Election Commission.

Also, according to parameters set by CNN in May: "All participating debaters have to appear on a sufficient number of state ballots to reach the 270 electoral vote threshold to win the presidency and receive at least 15% in four separate national polls of registered or likely voters that meet CNN’s standards for reporting."

Polls meeting those standards are sponsored by CNN, ABC News, CBS News, Fox News, Marquette University Law School, Monmouth University, NBC News, The New York Times/Siena College, NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist College, Quinnipiac University, The Wall Street Journal and The Washington Post.

Much to the fury and resentment of Robert F Kennedy Jnr., Biden and Trump were the only candidates to meet those requirements.

The pair has also agreed to participate in another debate hosted by ABC on September 10.

The 2024 CNN Presidential Debate – Ground Rules

Veteran CNN anchors Jake Tapper and Dana Bash will moderate the debate. It will last 90 minutes and include two commercial breaks.

The two candidates flipped a coin to determine their podium placement and the order of their closing statements. President Biden will appear on the right hand side of the screen, with Trump to his left.

As part of that deal, the former President will get the last word, as he opted for Mr Biden to deliver his closing statement first.

Both candidates will stand for the duration of the debate.

Candidates are forbidden from interacting with any advisers or members of their campaign teams for the duration of the event (specifically including commercial breaks).

No props or pre-written notes are allowed on stage. They will be permitted only a pen, a pad and a bottle of water.

Unlike in their previous showdowns, the candidates will have their microphones muted except for when it is their turn to speak.

There will also be no studio audience – and CNN intends to "enforce timing and ensure a civilised discussion".

South Africa vs India T20 live stream: preview

After a month of fantastic cricket, it’s time for South Africa vs India in the T20 World Cup final. Both have made it to this stage without losing a game and are battling it out for the trophy.

India won the toss and elected to bat first. That was looking like a mistake as they lost quick wickets and found themselves at 34-3. However, we haven't had a big Virat Kohli moment yet in this tournament so it was almost inevitable he would come to his team's rescue.. He scored 76 runs from 59 balls and was backed up by Axar Patel, who was eventually run out on 47.

Anrich Nortje was the pick of the bowlers. He took two wickets for the loss of 26 runs. It all means that South Africa need to score 177 to win the T20 World Cup for the first time.

These have been the best two teams in the tournament, so it is probably right that they will face each other in the final. It should be a cracker. The Chinese government assured that “most Taiwanese” can visit the country “in high spirits” even as it condemned Taiwan ’s warning to its people following Beijing ’s threats to execute “diehard separatists”.

Taiwan issued a travel warning this week urging its people not to go to China unless absolutely necessary, as China’s new legal guidelines threatened prosecution and in extreme cases the death penalty for Taiwan independence separatists.

The warning appeared to also apply to those living in Hong Kong and Macau.

The Chinese Taiwan Affairs Office said on Friday that its new legal guidelines were only aimed at separatists and their “evil words and actions”.

“The majority of Taiwanese compatriots can participate in cross-strait exchanges and cooperation. They don’t have to have any worries about travelling to and from the mainland. They can absolutely arrive in high spirits and depart well content,” the office said.

China views democratically governed Taiwan as its own territory.

In recent months, tensions between China and Taiwan have soared, with Beijing escalating its military activity around Taiwan.

The US also recently claimed in an intelligence report that China is readying its military to invade Taiwan “by 2027”.

China has also openly expressed dislike for Taiwan president Lai Ching-te whom it views as a “separatist”.

Mr Lai has rejected Beijing’s claims of sovereignty over Taiwan and says only the island’s own people can decide their future.

China has said any move by Taiwan to declare independence may warrant attacks from the mainland.

Taipei’s government asserts that Taiwan is already an independent country and has no intention of altering that status.

Follow our news, recent searches, uk rolls out red carpet for japanese royals on state visit, advertisement.

Japan's Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako began a three-day state visit to the United Kingdom on Tuesday (Jun 25), receiving a guard of honour and ceremonial royal welcome from King Charles III before a lavish Buckingham Palace banquet.

It is the first state visit to the UK by a Japanese head of state since 1998 and, unusually for such a trip, comes during a general election campaign.

Some typical political elements, such as a Downing Street visit, have been scrapped in line with neutrality rules but all the traditional pomp and pageantry has been maintained.

The emperor and empress, who arrived on Saturday and held informal weekend engagements, were formally greeted by Charles and Queen Camilla in central London to the sound of gun salutes and the two countries' national anthems.

They also met a host of other dignitaries, including UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, whose government has pushed for closer ties with Japan in recent years.

Naruhito, 64, and Charles, 75, inspected the guard of honour before the royals travelled the short distance to Buckingham Palace in a carriage procession for lunch.

The king, hosting his first state visit since it was revealed in February that he has cancer, later took his guests to a special exhibition of items from the Royal Collection relating to Japan.

He showed the emperor a delicately-painted scroll from 1855 from Queen Victoria's library showing the 17th-century coronation of Emperor Go-Mizunoo.The current day emperor could be heard saying "wonderful, wonderful" as he examined the objects on show.

The visiting royals next headed to lay a wreath at the Grave of the Unknown Warrior at Westminster Abbey, where they attended Queen Elizabeth II's state funeral in September 2022.

The day ends with a lavish state banquet on Tuesday evening.

Sunak and Labour party leader Keir Starmer, who is widely expected to win next week's election, are attending.

Charles has made a limited return to public duties in recent months after doctors said they were "very encouraged" by his progress.

Princess Anne, the king's sister, had been due to attend but is recovering in hospital with concussion and minor injuries after apparently being kicked by a horse.

Her husband, Timothy Laurence, told reporters on Tuesday that she was "recovering well".

The trip is the emperor's second official state visit since he ascended to the Chrysanthemum Throne in 2019, following a trip to Indonesia last year.

It was originally due to take place in 2020 and would have been the emperor's first overseas visit but it was delayed by the pandemic.

Charles is hosting his third state visit since he became king following the death of his mother. It was announced Tuesday he had approved an honours award for Nissan CEO Makoto Uchida -- making him an Honorary Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (CBE) -- for services to UK-Japan business relations.

    'Fond memories'

On Wednesday, Naruhito will visit The Francis Crick Institute, the UK's flagship biomedical research centre, before the Lord Mayor and City of London Corporation host a banquet for him that evening.

The emperor and empress will formally bid farewell to the king and queen at Buckingham Palace on Thursday morning before attending the "Japan: Myths to Manga" exhibition at London's V&A museum.

The emperor will later privately visit Windsor Castle to lay a wreath on the tomb of the late queen.

Elizabeth, whose 70-year reign began in 1952, hosted two Japanese state visits during her reign: Emperor Hirohito in 1971 and his eldest son Emperor Akihito - Naruhito's father - in 1998.

Speaking ahead of the trip, Naruhito said Britain's royals treated him "like family" during his time studying in England in the 1980s.

Naruhito recalled that during his two years at Oxford University, he was invited to Balmoral Castle in Scotland for a few days.

"I have very fond memories of the queen driving a car and inviting me to a barbecue... and (her husband) Prince Philip showing me around by driving a carriage himself," he told a rare press conference.

The Japanese couple head to Oxford, west of London on Friday, and will fly home from near there.
