Carnival is known for their affordable cruise prices and cruise ships that the whole family can enjoy. Often referred to as “America’s Cruise Line”, Carnival is one of the best cruise lines for a families on a budget.

The great thing about cruising with Carnival, is that they have great promotions year round. Whether you’re cruising off-season cruise or during the holidays, you will always be able to find cruise deals on Carnival ships.

What to Expect on an MSC Family Cruise

When you cruise with MSC, you can expect beautiful ship designs, fun activities, pools, waterparks and hot tub areas. MSC cruises tend to be reasonably priced and provide an affordable way for the whole family to travel together.

For example, at the time of writing this article, a 5 day Bahamas cruise leaving out of Miami that is $350 per adult in an interior cabin before taxes. This cruise is part of the “Kids Sail Free” promotion, so you will only have pay the taxes and port fees for your children.

Overall, MSC is a family-friendly cruise line that is well suited for kids of all ages. Onboard select MSC cruise ships, you will find water slides, splash parks, ropes courses, spas and a casino.

Newer Norwegian cruise ships like the Norwegian Prima is on the pricey side. However, Norwegian Cruise Line offers some amazing deals on some of their other cruises.

Although, newer Royal Caribbean ships can be pricey, they do offer some great deals on their older ships. Additionally at certain times of the year, Royal Caribbean will have Kids Sail Free promotions.

Royal Caribbean has great youth programs where your kids can participate in scavenger hunts, themed parties and sports. The Adventure Ocean Youth Program separates children by age group.

5. Princess Cruises

Princess Cruises won’t usually be the cheapest option when planning a family cruise . However, they do often have really good deals on third and fourth passengers in the same cabin.

During the year, some of the best cruise deals for families have been kids sailing for $0 or $1 when cruising in the same cabin as their parents on select sailings. Typically, 3rd and 4th passengers are heavily discounted and may cruise for free or at lower rates.

For example, Wave Season has a 5 day Caribbean cruise leaving from Fort Lauderdale starting at $418 for guest 1 and 2 and $148 for 3rd and 4th guests plus taxes.

What to Expect on a Princess Family Cruise

Princess Cruises is known for its beautiful cruise ships, great food options and dining. They also have a fun kids club (Camp Discovery Kid & Teen Centers), which is a great place for your children to make friends and participate in interactive activities.

Princess Cruises is best for families that enjoy traditional cruising and family friendly fun. Such as poolside games, Movies Under the Stars and entertainment including game shows, guest entertainers and production shows.

Holland America is a classic and traditional cruise line that is popular among an older demographic of cruise passengers. However, this is changing in recent years.

With newer cruise ships, Holland America has modernized their entertainment and live music onboard its ships. They’ve also made their cruise ships more family friendly and are popular among those planning multi-generational cruises.

The best part for families looking for an affordable cruise, is that Holland America offers a “Kids Cruise Free” promotion on select sailings at different times of the year.

What to Expect on a Holland America Family Cruise

A Holland America cruise is best for a family that enjoys spending time together and appreciates quality food and service on a cruise. There is a kids club onboard (Club HAL), however don’t expect water slides and pool games.

7. Celebrity Cruises

While Celebrity Cruises is not typically a low price cruise, it is possible to find a really good deal on a luxury family vacation. In particular, if you are cruising off-season or outside of the holiday’s and spring break, you can cruise with Celebrity for less than you think.

For example, we were able to find a 7-day Caribbean cruise sailing in October, in a Veranda cabin for four, for $1,988 plus taxes. For those who prefer an all-inclusive rate, including tips, Wifi and beverage package, Celebrity’s all-included rate can add to the value of this family vacation.

What to Expect on a Celebrity Family Cruise

Although, Celebrity Cruises doesn’t have water slides and thrill rides, they do offer a luxury family-friendly experience.

Celebrity has a great kids club (Camp At Sea), which is fun for kids and teenagers 17 and under. The Celebrity kids club has activities, videos games and places for the kids to hang out in a supervised and safe environment.

Entertainment of all kinds awaits you. If you want to splash and play on your family vacation, you can ride the AquaDunk or AquaDuck water coasters, romp in Donald’s Pool or Goofy’s Pool, or enjoy the sparkling pool at Mickey’s AquaLab.

Pools are also divided for guests of varying ages, such as the Quiet Cove Pool for guests 18 and older, splash pads for kids three and under, and Satellite Falls for adults.

The warm, opulent common areas add extravagance to your vacation, while kid-friendly activities and amenities will keep the young ones entertained.

Treat them to Vanellope’s Sweets, a candy shop with walls of candy as far as the eye can see. Disney entertainment comes to the big stages as only this brand can, with costumed characters singing, dancing, and entertaining guests all day or evening.

The staterooms have portholes that allow the kids to glance out at the ocean whenever they wish, and with family-centric amenities at every turn, you might not want to disembark!

2. Wonder of the Seas

The Royal Caribbean’s Wonder of the Seas embarks from Cape Canaveral and island hops the entire cruise, including a stop at Perfect Day at Coco Cay, the Royal Caribbean’s own private island only for cruise guests.

Kids will fall in love with the Wonder Playscape, which offers puzzles, games, climbing walls, and slides. Pool decks throughout will let you take a much-needed load off.

Perhaps you and the family are brave enough to try the 10-story Ultimate Abyss water slide!

Some staterooms overlook the majesty of the sea, and others have a virtual balcony. All rooms include Wi-Fi, spa features, and room service.

3. Disney Magic

You have so many ways to experience the wonder of a Disney Cruise Line vacation, including the Disney Magic.

This inviting ship is the home of D Lounge, the family-friendly hangout zone with dance parties, games, and hours upon hours of fun.

The kids can manage the Avengers during the Avenger’s Academy ride, visit the Mickey Mouse Club, receive a makeover at the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique (knights for boys and princesses for girls), or ride dizzying, spiraling water slides.

Take a ride on the Bolt sea coaster for some exciting thrills. You can also spend a sunny day at the WaterWorks water park with a dumping bucket and countless water slides, then close out the day by seeing a show. It’s all waiting for you.

The Family Harbor Staterooms in the Family Harbor Lounge is where you need to be. Kids eat free at most restaurants in the lounge, and you can take advantage of entertainment like board games and movies. Babysitting is also available. 

6. MSC Meraviglia

Be one of the first to experience the Disney Unchartered Adventure, an immersive water experience with more than 700 feet of tubes and music, animations, special effects, and lighting. The experience ends by riding down a lazy river, so dress to get wet!

The Hero Zone is another standout the kids should love. They can compete with one another gameshow-style, play on the game floor or playground, and see who’s victorious on the sports court.

Things to consider before you book your multi-generation cruise

Which family members will live together in one cabin? You may decide you need, for example, two cabins that sleep four quests in each and two cabins that sleep two guests each. Tell your cruise consultant you are flexible, though other configurations may suit you and your pocket. For example, imagine if you are eight family members traveling together. Do you book a 2-bedroom suite for four guests plus a balcony room for four guests? Compare this to 4 cabins with two guests each, and you could get a much better price.

Do you need interconnecting doors on your family cruise? These cabins are great for adults with teenagers. You can be close but do not need to be all squeezed together in one cabin. Our tip is if you are a family of 4 sharing a cabin and the kids are young adults, book a family balcony cabin. You will be glad of the extra 4-6 square meters of space a balcony gives you.

Multi-generation cruising – cabin choice matters.

What kind of cabin do you want? You choose between inside cabins, window cabins, balcony cabins, or suites. Price will play a significant factor here. But sometimes, the price difference between a balcony cabin and a window cabin can be minimal, depending on where on board the cabin is located. Look out for any special offers or campaigns the cruise line is running. 

Perhaps the senior members of your family will use a balcony more if they are relaxing in their cabin during the day or have a slower start to their mornings. At the same time, mums and dads with youngsters may not want a balcony at all, just a window. Teenagers sharing a room will most likely always be busy onboard. If they mainly use their cabin just for sleeping, perhaps an inside cabin without a window is enough, enabling you to save money.

Are there any parts of the ship you do not want to live close to? For example, a cabin close to elevators is excellent if you don’t want to walk so far. However, you may hear loud guests walking past at all hours. Cabins directly under pool decks or near the theatre can also be noisy. 

You may want to avoid cabins at the front of the ship where the anchor is located. And the engines are at the back of the ship, and vibrations will be louder in these areas.

Norwegian Cruise Line

Norwegian Cruise Line’s Freestyle cruising approach is a hit with families of all ages who love the flexibility and no dress code. Many NCL restaurants have flexible dining options, great kids’ clubs, and exciting water parks. You do not need to pre-book anything; you do what you like when you like.

Watch out for their prices, though, and compare with other cruise lines – the price jump from inside and window cabins up to balcony options can be extreme. Cruising has long been a popular way for people to travel, especially for those that are retired. There’s something about getting to enjoy an endless amount of food, drinks, and onboard activities while the ship takes you from one destination to another. It’s surely a tempting way to see the world.

As cruise lines including Carnival and Royal Caribbean continue to introduce show-stopping attractions that kids love, such as roller coasters and laser tag, families are getting more and more into cruising, too.

However, as with any vacation parents and families consider taking with kids, we have to ask: what are the best cruise lines for families?

The answer is, it depends.

Just like when you choose a hotel, families look for certain amenities for a cruise vacation.

Entertaining kids on any vacation is usually top of mind when planning a trip. A kid-friendly cruise line will have entertainment for its youngest sailors . Kids’ and teens’ clubs, pools, and water slides are just a few of the kid-specific amenities that you’ll find on a lot of the cruises on this list.

Higher-end cruise lines like expedition cruises offer robust educational programs for kids as well as adults. A family-friendly cruise might also have a place for the adults to relax such as a spa or adults-only area.

The cabin size matters, too, just as it would at a traditional hotel or resort .

Larger families may prefer a suite over an inside cabin. But either way, the square footage matters — even more so if you’ll spend quite a bit of your time onboard the ship.

And lastly, food might be a factor in deciding what cruise line would be best for your family. Luxury cruise lines such as Regent Seven Seas and The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection will no doubt have a superb menu, but they may not be expert kid-pleasers like Disney Cruise Line when it comes to food.

There are 3 types of cruises to choose from — ocean, river, and expedition cruises.

Ocean cruises are what most people have in mind when they think of taking a cruise. Most cruise lines have at least a few ocean cruise ships in their portfolio and they most popularly frequent the Caribbean, Mediterranean, Alaska , and Hawaii.

River cruises have traditionally been more popular with older cruisers but are now appealing to the younger crowds as well. River cruises can be found throughout Europe, Asia, and Africa. Most cruise lines don’t have kid or family programs and some outright don’t allow kids under 18, though Adventures by Disney and AmaWaterways have partnered to offer river cruising for families (more on that later).

And finally, expedition cruises take adventure-seekers to curious and far-flung destinations like the Arctic, Antarctica , the Galapagos , and the Amazon. Expedition boats are much smaller than ocean liners, and the offerings on board are usually more tailored to history and education on expedition cruises .

With all of that in mind, here are the best cruise lines for families and kids.

1. Disney Cruise Line

Disney Cruise Line is at the top of this list because it does a really fantastic job of catering to every member of the family. It has managed to bring the magic of Disney theme parks to the middle of the ocean — even the fireworks shows.

There are only 5 ships in Disney Cruise Lines’ portfolio, but Disney has plenty of cruise itineraries to choose from. It sails to popular destinations as well as unique places that families might not have considered, such as the Norwegian Fjords .

Sailings feature character experiences just like at the Disney theme parks. You’ll also find live shows, a spa, nightclubs, and lounges. Each ship also has various kids’ clubs for passengers as young as 3 years old (a fee-based nursery is available for kids under 3), as well as pools with waterslides and aqua play areas. Older kids can enjoy a little independence in spaces designed just for them where they can play video games, watch TV, and meet other kids their age.

Family Harbor staterooms and suites are located near Family Harbor Lounges and come with a free evening of Night Owls babysitting, among other perks. Cloud 9 Spa staterooms and suites offer Elemis toiletries, spa-branded bathrobes and slippers, and priority spa reservations. And lastly, Havana staterooms and suites are located close to the Havana Bar and Pool. Some suites come with hammock chairs in the outdoor area.

New Orleans native and Food Network star Emeril Lagasse is the newest Chief Culinary Officer for all 24 ships with 3 original restaurants. There are plenty of dining options to choose from across the fleet with cuisines including Italian, Creole, burgers, and teppanyaki.

Onboard activities include Family Feud Live, waterslides, karaoke, and The Punchliner Comedy Club. Most but not all activities are included in the cruise fare. The IMAX theater and a few other attractions incur an additional cost.

Family-friendly excursions and tours include a wildlife safari and beach bonfire on an Alaskan cruise, panoramas and painting in Grand Turk, and a stingray adventure in the Bahamas.

What makes this class of ships on Norweigan Cruise Lines so appealing to families is that it feels like a floating resort. These are the second-largest ships in Norwegian’s fleet. Activities on either ship include multiple pools, a waterpark, and even a full-size ropes course.

The stateroom categories aboard both the Norwegian Getaway and the Norwegian Breakaway include Studio, Inside, Oceanview, Balcony, Spa, Club Balcony Suite, and The Haven.  Within those categories are another 30 stateroom types to choose from, including a 2-bedroom family villa . The Haven is an exclusive set of staterooms at the top level of the ship that features a 24-hour butler, concierge service, and sundeck.

In addition to room service, guests aboard Breakaway Class Norwegian Cruise Line ships can enjoy almost 2 dozen restaurants and bars. Not every restaurant is included in your cruise fare. Specialty dining options include seafood restaurant Ocean Blue, Brazilian steakhouse Moderno Churrascaria, and French restaurant Le Bistro.

MSC Cruises is a European-based cruise company with a growing footprint in North America and the Caribbean. It’s known for offering an affordable cruise option without a lot of the fluff of other cruise lines.

For family cruisers in particular, MSC offers family excursions with special pricing for kids, and tours designed to be interactive as well as educational . There are also kids’ clubs aboard their ships in addition to the LEGO Experience on Board, which is a day dedicated to LEGO activities for the whole family.

Select ships feature a fully-immersive virtual reality experience, a movie theater, and an arcade room.

They also admittedly don’t offer as many action-packed attractions on board and some do not cater to especially young children. However, the cruise lines on this list each have unique kids and teens programs that you should be aware of.

Here are the best luxury cruise lines for families.

1. Celebrity Cruises

Celebrity Cruises features large ships but aims to provide a more high-end experience than you’ll find on cruise lines like Royal Caribbean and MSC Cruises. It also does a great job of catering to multi-generational cruisers .

Camp at Sea is Celebrity Cruises’ kids’ club for kids 3 to 17 years old. Camp is open every day from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. and is broken into 4 age groups. Activities range from arts and crafts for the youngest age group to video game tournaments, scavenger hunts, and movie nights for older kids.

Family-friendly excursions include cultural tours, water sports, volcano and glacier hikes, and swimming with dolphins.

There are 4 classes of cruise ships offered by Celebrity Cruises: Edge Class (its newest and most innovative), Solstice Class, Millenium Class, and Galapagos Vessels.

Hot Tip: Cruisers say that Celebrity Equinox is the most family-friendly Celebrity ship thanks to 2 kids’ programs only available on this ship as well as over 100 adjoining cabins.

An array of staterooms exist to choose from on Celebrity Cruise ships, including family verandahs that sleep 5. Celebrity Cruise ships also feature staterooms that cater to solo travelers as well, so when traveling with a group, no one has to feel obligated to share a room.

Its solo yacht Evrima , which is the Greek word for “discovery,” will be joined by Ilma in 2024.

Guests aboard a Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection vessel can expect the same service they would on land, including the Ritz Kids program. At Ritz Kids, children ages 4 to 12 years old have the opportunity to participate in unique activities based on where they’re traveling . Programming mainly focuses on sustainability, marine life, sailing, and arts and culture.

There’s not an expectation for the yachts to frequently be teeming with children, but the cruise line expects to host more young passengers during summer and holiday school breaks.

The all-suite Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection features ocean views from every room, as well as 6 restaurants and in-suite dining. Guests can enjoy Southeast Asian cuisine from contemporary restaurant Talaat Nam or check out Mediterranean restaurant Mistral.

Lindblad Expeditions aims to be the premier expedition cruise line. Its National Geographic Global Explorers program offers exclusive and family-friendly programming for kids and teens.

Expedition cruises are all about exploring remote destinations like Antarctica, the Galapagos Islands, and the Amazon. Expedition passengers can expect expert-led educational tours and excursions, and smaller ships that cater to less than 100 people .

With the National Geographic Global Explorers program, kids and teens get hands-on experience collecting and analyzing samples, learn how to take field notes, and even learn how to take slow-motion and timelapse videos to document their findings. The National Geographic Global Explorers program can be found on cruises to Antarctica, Alaska, Baja California, and Galápagos.

Lindblad Expeditions ships carry as few as 28 guests and at most 148. As such, cabins and suites vary across the company’s fleet of ships. It’s a little difficult to find out on your own which suites would accommodate more than 2 people or if you can get connecting cabins, though they do exist, as well as standard double-occupancy suites. As a tip, the best way to book a Lindblad Expedition cruise with your family may be to work with a travel advisor to ensure that you’re making the right investment.

Expedition cruisers seem to be less concerned about the dining options, however, Lindblad does boast that the dining is delicious and sustainably sourced.

Only available on summer and holiday sailings, the free program includes activities such as naturalist-led island and beach excursions, crafts, and science. Other fun ways that kids can spend their time aboard The Gauguin are with treasure hunts, stargazing, and designing their own Polynesian tattoos.

All 3 of the dining venues aboard The Gauguin offer a well-thought-out menu with both formal and informal dining options. La Veranda offers alfresco dining inspired by the destinations the ship sails to, Le Grill serves a buffet breakfast, grilled lunch favorites, salads, and tropical fruits, and L’Etoile is the main dining option and serves a fine dining menu with complimentary wine pairings.

5. Hapag-Lloyd Cruises

Activities include language classes, unique children’s excursions designed around the interests of the kids onboard, and even spa treatments for kids as young as 8 years old.

For one low price, you can secure your room on the ship along with all your meals and certain types of entertainment. And if you can avoid airfare by driving to the port of departure, you can save even more.

Many cruise lines offer added perks like supervised kids' clubs, nightly shows, and formal dinners to lure families in. Special amenities and activities mean families can get more bang for their buck. 1. MSC Cruises

Mediterranean line MSC Cruises offers seven-night Caribbean cruises starting at $399 per person. Many packages also come with onboard credits and free Wi-Fi. But families with kids score even more when it comes to affordability. Unlike some other cruise lines that charge full or reduced fares for children, MSC Cruises has a "kids sail free" policy for some cruises.

The fine print states:

"Kids 11 and under at time of sailing cruise free on select sailings. Kids must sail as third/fourth guests when sharing a stateroom with two full-fare paying adults to qualify to cruise for free."

On cruises where kids sail free, the cruise line notes, families are still responsible for taxes and port dues.

P&O Cruises

American cruisers may be less familiar with P&O Cruises than they are with cruise lines that sail regularly from U.S. ports, but P&O, which bills itself as Britain's favorite cruise line, knows a thing about catering to all kinds of passengers -– families included. English Claymation animation stars Wallace and Gromit and Shaun the Sheep make special guest appearances on family-friendly cruises. The characters are featured in arts and crafts in The Reef kids club and play an augmented reality version of hide and seek with younger passengers. Aboard P&O's newest ship, Arvia, Wallace and Gromit star in a special live show for their young fans. 

Something that makes P&O stand apart is the nursery services for babies and toddlers. Not every line includes baby care in the cost of the cruise, much less nighttime nursery service. However, families with infants will be happy to know that evening child-minding is included for passengers aged 6 months to 4 years. 

Since P&O is a British company, passengers are largely English and prices are generally given in pounds sterling, so you may need to calculate conversions for various costs related to the cruise. Another consideration is that only five of the P&O ships are family-friendly. The remaining two are adults-only, so make sure you plan your family vacation with the correct ship in mind. 

MSC Cruises

Cruise Critic concedes MSC Cruises "may not be on your radar" for family cruises, but goes on to report "it's actually a great option for people traveling with children." And with some very cool, all-ages activities aboard its ships, it's hard to disagree. By purchasing the MSC Fun Pass, you'll have access to bowling, an XD interactive cinema, and a flight simulator. Another plus is how MSC has worked to make things more accessible for passengers with limited mobility, most notably on its private Caribbean island, Ocean Cay Marine Reserve. The island is fully ADA-compliant and has beach wheelchairs that, upon request, will be set aside for passengers to use as soon as they reach the island.

MSC attracts an international clientele and officially operates in six languages: English, Italian, German, French, Spanish, and Brazilian Portuguese. Which language takes precedence on any given cruise is determined by the language spoken by most passengers. That doesn't mean you won't be able to communicate in a different language, but if you are considering booking a cruise with MSC, know that English is not the default language.

Celebrity Cruises

Traveling with teenagers is notoriously tough, as stuff that appeals to kids may be too baby-ish, but an adult-only cruise isn't feasible either. Celebrity Cruises seems to have struck a magic balance, and according to Forbes , is the best cruise line for teenagers. The publication singles out Teen Camp programming, describing it as "particularly interesting for more mature children and teens." Activities include silent discos, video game competitions, sports competitions, and culinary lessons.

On the new Celebrity Ascent, the spa has services specially designed for kids and teens, as opposed to many adult-only spas with strict "no kids allowed" policies. On the Celebrity Equinox and Celebrity Edge, S.T.E.M. activities developed with the Frost Science Museum teach kids about sailing and navigation, nature and conservation efforts, as well as marine life. In addition, Celebrity offers autism-friendly cruising, which includes specialized dietary options and toys and films that accommodate passengers with sensory sensitivity. The cruise line also offers priority boarding and check-in to help these families avoid crowd bottlenecks. 

While there are lots of great things for families on a Celebrity ship, their main demographic remains adults, as it has been from the beginning —marketing themselves as an edgier alternative to staid competitors. If you have young kids or are looking for a cruise fully focused on the younger set, Celebrity may not be the line for you.

Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection

Ritz-Carlton is one of the top brands in luxury accommodations, and they've brought the same white-glove service they are known for on land to their cruise superyacht, the Evrima. The ship will be joined by two more in 2024 and 2025. For now, the small vessel (with only a 298-passenger capacity) stands alone for the brand. Ritz-Carlton has made a name for itself with gorgeously designed spaces, and the suites on the Evrima carry on this tradition, with beautiful furnishings and high-end touches. Families can make use of the convertible sofa beds found in many of the suites, while the two-story lofts offer a bit more privacy. In these spacious suites, the sofa bed is located upstairs in the sitting room, while the master suite is located on the lower floor. 

In this luxury yacht and small ship category, kids clubs are not a given, but Ritz Kids, a popular program offered at Ritz hotels, has been bought aboard. The club offers creative programming for kids with trained counselors to enrich the time young people spend on board. During school holidays and summer sailings, expect more young passengers than at other times of the year.

In keeping with the theme of a luxury hotel on water, the pricing structure of the Ritz-Carleton Yacht Collection is closer to a hotel than an all-inclusive resort (like other cruise lines). This means things that you might expect to be included in your fare may not be. This includes the kids club, which incurs a charge per child, per session.

With small ships and itineraries visiting places like the Galapagos Islands and Arctic regions, a trip with Hurtigruten appeals to those with an explorer's heart. Even though I’ve noticed a trend in the cruise industry leaning towards more family-friendly fleets (I’m looking at you, Royal Caribbean ), a lot of us still see the perks of a kid-free vacation. And while many (if not all) cruises have dedicated spaces for adults on board, sometimes you don’t want to be pigeon-holed into one area for the entirety of your trip in order to get some peace and quiet. So, I went on the hunt to find the best cruise lines for adults, so you can relax and have fun with the 21-and-over crowd.

Oceania cruises, how i chose the best cruise lines for adults.

I’ve been on seven cruises since 2018, including Princess, Norwegian and Royal Caribbean. I have firsthand experience on each cruise line’s amenities, food, entertainment and more. I also spent time researching all the cruise lines on this list (especially the ones I’ve never been on) and did a deep dive to find out key destinations, ship information and star perks aboard their vessels. I even took it a step further and checked out reviews straight from the people—i.e., on places like Reddit, TikTok and travel blogs. 

1. Virgin Voyages

Virgin Voyages came on the scene in 2021 and promised to create a cruise line for adults. In four years, it launched three ships: Scarlet Lady, Valiant Lady and Resilient Lady and gave guests full access to all its amenities. Per their website, the cruise line strives to let passengers try out over 20 eateries, participate in unlimited group fitness classes, enjoy free Wi-Fi and check live entertainment at an affordable price. 

Speaking of entertainment, the cruise line takes it up a notch with their theme nights like PJ Party (aka a cool pajama party) and We Fancy (dress code: elegant), along with epic dance parties like Heartbeat inspired by Brooklyn’s own House of Yes , performances like Duel Reality which tells a modern interpretation of Romeo & Juliet and immersive experiences to get you involved in the show. Let’s not forget other fun activities to surely make a vacation a memorable one: ala private karaoke booths, casinos and a multi-story nightclub.

According to  their website , “All guests must be 18 years old on or before the day they are scheduled to embark on their cruise; we do not maintain facilities or services on board for younger individuals.” Since 2000, Viking has always made it their mission to target older travelers, more specifically those over 55 to join their ships, so don’t expect to see any kiddos running around.

Viking currently has over 60 ships in their fleet that travel all around the world. You can take an iconic Western Mediterranean trip (Barcelona to Rome), a Grand  European  tour (Budapest to Amsterdam) or a Great Lakes voyage (Toronto to Minnesota). While many of the ships feature pools, restaurants, a library room and theater, most travelers go for the thrilling excursions and even participate in lectures specifically found on the expedition ships (Viking Octantis and Viking Polaris) that are great for the curious scientist or animal lover.

While the minimum age is 6 years old, the target audience is around 35 and older, according to  Travel Weekly.  So, whether you’re looking for a traditional cruise or an expedition, Seabourn offers trips all around the world for seven to 30 days at sea—which gives you ample time to enjoy a relaxing massage at their spa, try to win big at the casino or have a dip in the pool. All of their ships also include live entertainment, fine dining and an all-inclusive package.

[However] if [there] were any kids they were not really noticeable. In our experience no waterslides/waterparks equal very few kids on board.” The cruise line has been around since the ‘90s and currently has 16 ships in its fleet, traveling to port stops  like  Key West, Florida  to Athens,  Greece . The best part is you can schedule a weekend getaway or a long holiday for the entire season.

Sure, you can cruise for a weekend or seven days, but the cruise line also offers long durations like a 200 days vacation—departing from Miami, Florida and visiting Caribbean islands (St. Maarten, Barbados) and parts of Brazil before arriving to New York. The cruise line is also known for its culinary experiences and enrichment programs. They have a dedicated library room so you can read comfortably as you sail, as well as guest lectures to learn more about the destinations you’re visiting and classes to learn how the meals are prepared. 

And if you’re wondering if the cruise line is ‘adult-enough,’  one Tripadvisor commenter  believes it a huge hit for the 50+ crowd: “I would not recommend it unless it’s a port intensive trip. There are no activities for kids. The average age on board is 60s and above. They have trivia, bingo [and] needlepoint (cooking classes and art classes are hard to get). The entertainment is usually a string quartet and maybe a magician if you’re lucky. I wouldn’t take my adult children in their 30s for fear of their boredom. I would try Disney or Celebrity.”

I’ve personally been on three Norwegian cruises ( twice on Prima ) and found very few children on board. While there are many thrill-seeking amenities fit for the whole family, there are plenty of ways to stray away from the younger folks. I found Norwegian Prima’s guests skew a bit older based on their upscale aesthetic around the ship that looks straight out of the MOMA museum. I appreciate Norwegian for its freestyle experience, with specialty and complimentary dining options that provide items outside of your usual pizza and hot dog joint. 

The Norwegian Prima is also home to one of largest spas I’ve ever seen at sea. There are two gigantic pools, a few sauna rooms and a large lounge area overlooking the ocean. I spent hours in there just taking in the quiet and calming ambience. Plus, the live productions of  Summer: The Donna Summer Musical  and tribute shows that honor the like of Michael Jackson or Adele are just some of the ways they cater towards millennials, Gen Xers and boomers. Most ships even have dedicated pubs and intimate bars that play classic music from the 60s to early ‘00s, too.

It dates back to 1873 and was used as cargo and transportation service. Today, the ships are used for leisure as they travel all around the world, docking in the likes of Hawaii and Japan. You can spend a day—or 53 days—sailing with each ship. According to  Reddit , cruisers have seen families and smaller children, but found the majority of guests were over 40. 

A standout feature of their newer ships is the entertainment on board. If you’re a music lover, ships like the Rotterdam and Koningsdam have the B.B King’s Blues Club and Rolling Stone Lounge that cater to playing the classic hits. Holland America Line also partnered with the Professional Pickleball Association to provide state of the art pickleball courts with impeccable views, as well as a casino and a spa, so every guest can find an activity they can enjoy on vacation.

I recently traveled with Princess Cruises, and I highly recommend it for adults who aren’t traveling with kids in mind. As mentioned, I’ve been on seven cruises, and this by far has been the least family-friendly cruise line—in a good way! Although there were some kids and teens, the ship was made of mostly older travelers. I was actually surprised by how much it catered to adults over kids. It didn’t have many thrilling amenities like waterslides or an expansive basketball court that usually draw the younger crowds, but there were plenty of things that made the ship thrilling and exciting for mature folks.

For instance, Spellbound, an interactive cocktail experience hat features magicians, an exclusive bar and experimental dishes. There’s also Love by Britto, a dining experience which is heart-themed (down to the utensils) and sets a romantic vibe for couples. Additionally, all Princess ships have many ways to unwind and have fun that cater toward adults, like including their spa, theaters and pool decks.In fact, their latest ship, the Sun Princess, also has the Sanctuary, a pool area set apart from the rest of the ship that’s strictly for adults, so you can lounge under the sun all day without interruption.

Sexual assault on the high seas: How to keep you and your family safe on vacation cruises

Two women on a Margaritaville At Sea Paradise  cruise to the Bahamas last May reported being sexually assaulted by a bartender they say pocketed one of their room keys and entered their room after they fell asleep.

It was, sadly, not an unusual event, according to a recent Business Insider report . While many millions of people every year enjoy the time of their lives on a magical sea journey, sexual assault aboard major cruise ships is the most commonly reported crime.

According to data from the U.S. Department of Transportation , there were more than 500 allegations of sex crimes on cruise ships between 2015 and 2022 and experts say the actual number could be much higher as victims may not feel comfortable coming forward.

Also not unusual: few real consequences. Lawsuits get dismissed, cruise lines settle (often with confidentiality agreements), employees involved usually get fired (but may try to hire on with other cruise lines), and plea deals get made. The bartender on the Margaritaville cruise, Hoobesh Dookhy, who allegedly assaulted one woman and then attacked the other, pleaded guilty to one count of abusive sexual content to avoid the more serious charge of sexual assault.

While your cabin steward and other crewmembers are friendly and helpful — and the majority of the many cruises that happen each year are incident-free — it's important to remember that you'll need to watch your own safety and advocate for your own personal well-being.

"Remember that all security personnel and crew are employed by the cruise line," the International Cruise Victims International (ICVI) warns. "Their employer's best interests will go ahead of yours."

Here are some tips to keep yourself and your family safe to have fun. Please note: being sexually assaulted is never the victim's fault. But there are steps you can take to reduce the possibility.

How to keep your room safe on a cruise

Your stateroom is the safe, peaceful, quiet haven during your trip where you can relax and rest up. Here's how to keep it secured.

• Keep your door locked when you're in the room. If there's a deadbolt, use it, and consider other ways to secure it as long as you can open it quickly in case of emergency. You also can bring a doorstop, or ask your cabin steward for one.
• Use the peephole to check anyone knocking before you open the door.
• Pull your door shut when you leave and make sure you hear it click shut. Some cabin doors can stick.
• If your stateroom has a balcony , keep that door locked when you leave the room, when the ship is in port, and while you sleep.
• When entering your room , leave the door open so you have a way out while you check the bathroom and closets for intruders.

Drink responsibly while on a cruise

Cruises are a time to let go, and alcohol is often a big and eagerly anticipated part of that. However, overindulgence can cause you to make bad decisions or miss warning signs and you should use the same precautions you'd use in a bar on land.

• Know your limits , and stick to them.
• Avoid unlimited drinks packages , they encourage binging.
• Stay with friends or family . Ideally, have one of you remain sober each night.
• Don't let drinks out of your sight and don't accept drinks from strangers. Date rape drugs are easy to miss and DOT data shows that most sexual assaults on cruises happen from other passengers.
• Be leery of offers to walk you back to your room. Stay with company you know well.
• Ask for unopened bottles .

You don't need to be paranoid. You're there to relax and have a good time and cruises are designed to make you forget about your worries, it's kind of the point of a cruise. But it's easy to assume everyone around you is friendly and safe when you're on vacation in what is essentially a small floating city. Be aware of your surroundings and take some basic precautions.

• Keep your cruise card on you . Don't leave it lying around, and don't write your cabin number on it in case anyone finds it.
• Don't mention your cabin number to other people or to crewmembers, unless they have a legitimate need for it.
• Make friends with your cabin steward on the first day. They're more likely to notice if someone suspicious is trying to gain entry to your room.
• Don't accept invitations to go to other passenger cabins alone, or to crew quarters or crew-only areas.
• Keep an eye on children at all times . According to a Congressional report from 2013 , a third of all sexual assault victims on cruise ships are children and teens.
• Stay with your party or loved ones. Avoid walking around alone, especially at night.
• Get a cruise buddy. If you're cruising solo, make friends with another passenger so you can enjoy your vacation with pleasant company (and watch each others' backs).
• Request the ship's security guide , a written description of where to go and who to talk to if a crime was committed, along with criminal law procedures for the countries you'll be visiting and a list of U.S. embassy and consulate locations.

If you are assaulted on a cruise

First and foremost, do what you need to do to keep yourself safe. After that, you have choices. The  Cruise Vessel Security and Safety Act of 2010  (CVSSA) establishes certain requirements for passenger and crew safety on cruise ships.

• Get medical assistance. At sea, the ship's medical facilities can treat any injuries. On shore, visit the nearest emergency room or hospital.
• Report the crime on board . You have the right to insist that the scene of the crime be secured for law enforcement investigations. You also may want to make note of the names and contact information of anyone, crew or passengers, who witnessed or were involved in the incident, according to the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network (RAINN). After the ship docks, witnesses can be difficult to track down. Ask for copies of all documentation, although you may not get them.
• Report the crime to the FBI . The FBI has jurisdiction over crimes on cruise ships if the ships leave or return to U.S. soil and the attacker or victim is a U.S. citizen. If you report to the ship the cruise line is required to contact the FBI but you can call them directly at (202) 324-3000.
• Get a rape kit done. The CVSSA requires cruise lines to make sexual assault forensic exam kits available. If you do this, avoid showering or changing your clothes beforehand.
• Talk to someone. Any sexual assault can be terrifying. You can talk to trained sexual assault counselors at the National Sexual Assault Hotline at (800) 656-HOPE (4673) or chat online at  online.rainn.org .

Disney Cruise Lines do not specifically address crime onboard on their website, although they do post a link to the DOT statistics on cruise line incident reporting as required by the CVSSA. Royal Caribbean International 's site says they are "committed to preventing illegal activity and treats all allegations seriously. We report all allegations of crimes to law enforcement, regardless of the validity of the claim."

Disney Cruise Line ships are known for meet-and-greets with Mickey Mouse and Disney princesses, interactive movie-themed dining experiences and enormous kids clubs and play areas.

What might surprise the uninitiated is how good the line is at taking care of the whole family, not just the Mouse-obsessed little ones.

Disney thinks of all the little things that can help parents have a stress-free trip with kids in tow. From split bathrooms (allowing one family member to take a bath while another uses the toilet) to waiters who will cut up your child's food, Disney Cruise Line takes the pressure off parents.

While other cruise lines limit water play to kids who are toilet trained and drop-off child care to ages 3 and up, Disney caters to all kids with onboard splash areas and nurseries.

It also offers adults-only pool decks and restaurants, a nightlife scene and couples spa treatments to revive exhausted parents who haven't had a date in months.

Teens might roll their eyes at the ever-present Mickeys, but Disney Cruise Line does not ignore its older kid guests. Tweens and teens get their own cool hangouts, Edge and Vibe, with video games, foosball and hip seating areas.

Additionally, first-run movies and Broadway-caliber musicals, waterslides, teen spa treatments and grab-and-go food options (and free room service) keep older kids busy and happy.

Disney Wish and soon-to-debut Disney Treasure feature sports areas for free play and competitions attractive to this age group.

Royal Caribbean

With some of the biggest ships at sea and an amusement park-like private island in the Bahamas, Royal Caribbean is one of the best cruise lines for active families.

Want to try surfing, sky diving, rock climbing, laser tag, go-karts or zip lining? Families don't have to leave the ship to get their adrenaline highs.

Even the sedentary pursuits are high-octane on Royal Caribbean. Broadway musicals, festive parades, water acrobatic performances and ice skating shows wow the crowds on sea days.

Expansive play spaces for kids include separate clubs for teens and tweens, plus drop-off nurseries for babies.

Parents can sneak off to the adults-only solarium or thermal suite while the kids live it up at cruise camp.

After a hard day of play, worn-out families can refuel at a variety of restaurants, including burger and milkshake mecca Johnny Rockets, Italian and Mexican eateries and an all-day buffet.

Family cabins and connecting staterooms give larger families their needed space. The Ultimate Family Suite on Royal Caribbean's Symphony of the Seas, Spectrum of the Seas and Wonder of the Seas can sleep eight, but parents and kids alike might be tempted to stay up late playing air hockey, scrambling up the climbing wall, soaking in the private outdoor hot tub or watching the giant TV.

When Icon of the Seas debuts in 2024, the new megaship will offer an entire section of the ship devoted to family-friendly accommodations and an outdoor dining-and-play space targeted at parents with young children.

Carnival Cruise Line

Practicalities first: Carnival Cruise Line is an affordable and convenient cruise line for families who don't live the jet-set lifestyle. With home ports all around the U.S., Carnival puts its ships within driving distance of many Americans.

A variety of short-cruise destinations, affordable-yet-spacious inside cabins (they can sleep four) and lots of onboard attractions and restaurants included in the fares combine to make it one of the best-value cruise lines afloat.

Carnival doesn't dub its fleet the Fun Ships for nothing. The whole family will have a blast on board, whether you like getting down to live music, busting a gut at family-friendly comedy shows, getting soaked at an onboard water park or eating green eggs and ham with Dr. Seuss characters.

The cruise line also embraces simple pleasures like free-flowing soft-serve ice cream and pizza and a day spent lounging by the pool.

Families don't need to pull out their wallets to feed ravenous teens or sugar-fueled children. Guy Fieri burgers and barbecue, burritos for breakfast and lunch and Shaquille O'Neal's fried chicken are all included in your cruise fares. No one's going to make you dress up for dinner, either.

Carnival ships have plenty of cabins that can sleep four or five passengers, but its newest ships truly treat families right. Book a Family Harbor cabin or suite and get access to a family lounge stocked with all the essentials — snacks and coffee, games, Wi-Fi, movies and a concierge to make bookings so mom and dad can spend more time playing with the kids.

MSC Cruises

The underdog on our list, MSC Cruises might not be a household name yet, but any cruise line that has a partnership with Lego should be on every family's radar.

As the Mediterranean line grows its U.S.-based fleet, it is staying attuned to the needs of traveling families.

Case in point: Larger family groups don't have to cram into one cabin or be scattered across the ship. Instead, they can select from a variety of connecting cabins that can accommodate up to 10 people.

Families keen on rooming together can take advantage of frequent "kids sail free" fares and pay only the taxes and fees for children under 18 who are the third and fourth passengers in a cabin.

Speaking of kids clubs, MSC's ships offer play spaces for babies, kids, tweens and teens. Its ships not only offer a drop-off Baby Club with educational toys by Chicco but also a special baby laundry service to take care of that pile of dirty onesies.

Kids club activities go beyond arts and crafts and video games to include cooking events, sports competitions and hi-tech interactive games. Teens can sing karaoke, dance at the onboard disco and attend themed parties with their new friends.

Outside of the kids club, families can race in a Formula One simulator, experience virtual reality, get soaked in a water park or brave their fear of heights on a suspension bridge.

One of the line's newest ships, MSC Seascape, features Robotron, a three-seat robotic amusement ride that's a hit with thrill-seeking families.

Norwegian Cruise Line

Norwegian Cruise Line is all about giving cruisers options to create different versions of the perfect cruise vacation, all within the same ship.

The flexibility and choice make it one of the best cruise lines for families, especially those who need to satisfy diverse interests or get bored with the same activities day after day.

Kids clubs and adults-only sun decks allow for age-appropriate fun time apart, but Norwegian wants families to have fun together. Teaming up for laser tag, mastering a ropes course, singing along to a Broadway musical or live concert or screaming down a waterslide are guaranteed to create those unbreakable family bonds.

Norwegian's flexible dining system and a plethora of onboard eateries let families plan meals to suit their schedules and tastes.

Also, free kids meals at extra-charge restaurants mean parents can sample Brazilian, Japanese , French or seafood dishes while the littles gobble up pasta and chicken fingers. Casual all-day options suit fussy eaters who need unfussy dining areas.

The cruise line also gets a shoutout for its family-friendly Hawaii itineraries. The only big-ship cruise line that sails weeklong itineraries round trip from Honolulu, Norwegian provides an easy way for families to visit multiple islands.

Beach time, boat rides, water sports, luaus and volcano tours combine for an epic family trip, with the ship taking the stress out of meals and transportation.

Bottom line

Families can have a great time on any cruise line, hanging out by the pool, visiting exciting new destinations and simply spending time together. But if you're looking for a ship that really caters to kids and their adult companions, you'll want to book a vacation on one of these five best cruise lines for families.

I've stayed at all 5 value resorts at Disney World. There are only 2 I'd book again — for the right price.

• I've been visiting Disney World for over 30 years and usually stay at a hotel on the property. 
• I've spent a night at all five value resorts , and only some of them are worth the lower price.
• If I had to pick one (almost) perfect budget hotel, it would be  Disney's Pop Century Resort .

As a Disney World annual passholder , I've been lucky enough to stay at every hotel on the property.

I love splurging on moderate or deluxe properties, but it can easily cost a family of three close to $10,000 to spend five days at the park while staying at a deluxe resort. When it comes down to it, the Disney value resorts are usually the best option for my vacation budget.

There are five different value resorts at Disney World : All-Star Movies, All-Star Sports, All-Star Music, Pop Century, and Art of Animation.

Now that I've checked all of them off of my to-stay list, I can confidently say there are only two I'd book again, and only when the price is right.

Here's my take on each value resort.

I only stay at All-Star Movies if I find an extra cheap room.

Three All-Star Resorts share a property at Disney: All-Star Movies, All-Star Sports, and All-Star Music.

I normally don't stay at any of them, but I book Movies occasionally if I can find an extra-cheap room with my Florida-resident or annual-passholder discount .

Disney's All-Star Movies puts guests right in the heart of their favorite Disney films. I love walking through the outdoor common areas and seeing massive statues of characters like Buzz Lightyear and Woody from "Toy Story" and Pongo and Perdy from "101 Dalmatians."

Since the hotel isn't connected to any Disney transportation except for the complimentary buses, I try to have a car when I stay here to make getting to the parks easier.

All-Star Sports is a nice spot for sports fans, but it seems a little outdated to me.

I love the sports theming at All-Star Sports , especially the football area where kids can run around on a turf field. But the overall vibe of the resort feels outdated to me.

Even if I could get a good deal on a room here, I'd rather spend a little more money to stay at Pop Century or a moderate resort .

All-Star Music is my least favorite of the All-Star resorts.

My least favorite All-Star property is Disney's All-Star Music.

I get the appeal for families on a budget because the deals tend to be pretty good. But I just don't love the theming.

It's also located between Sports and Movies, so finding parking in the shared lots can be hard. That gets annoying when I already have to rely on my car since there aren't many free transportation options.

Pop Century is my favorite value resort because of the price and location.

If I could only stay at one value resort again, I'd choose Disney's Pop Century.

I love the larger-than-life decade-specific theming of the buildings, and the nostalgic nods to the past in the lobby are fun to look through.

It's also usually pretty easy to find a good deal , with stays often dipping below $200 a night.

In addition to saving me money, Pop Century has easy access to Hollywood Studios and Epcot via the Disney Skyliner gondolas , saving me time on trips to the parks.

Art of Animation is great for families, but the price can be a little steep.

Disney's Art of Animation has special family suites for up to six people, which is ideal for bigger groups traveling together. But the resort is priced more like a moderate (or even deluxe) Disney hotel and only has the value amenities.

Family-suite rates start at $623 a night. For comparison, rooms at Disney's Wilderness Lodge start at $552 a night.

Of course, the Wilderness Lodge rooms only sleep four people. But if your family is smaller, staying at the deluxe resort could be more cost-efficient. Plus, you get access to more upscale amenities.

Even Art of Animation's standard four-person room rates start at $292. For just a few more dollars a night, I'd rather stay at a moderate resort like Coronado Springs or Port Orleans. Those rates start at $302 and $307, respectively.
