A review worth reading if you are considering a 29er DH bike. The Trek Session 9.9 downhill bike has a couple interesting quirks but is without a doubt one of the best DH bikes we've ridden in. If you're a racer looking for pick up speed and drop seconds, check this bike out!

One of the most successful, recognizable silhouettes on the DH circuit now comes with wagon wheels. So how does it compare to the newest crop of DH bikes?
Ultra light and stiff
Exceptional, simple finish
Balanced, aggressive geometry
Quick acceleration and efficient pedaling
Possibly too light and stiff
Top of the line price tag
Lacking traction in rough stuff
Reach may limit taller riders
Sep 2018 · Seb Stott
A pricey bike let down by a basic fork, disappointing brakes and dated geometry
‘ABP’ rear suspension provides a solid, supple action
Relatively short front end feels cramped, high bottom bracket and short frame deliver a sometimes precarious-feeling ride, harsh fork and weak brakes are disappointing for the price
If you're a DH racer, your special edition bike usually comes out during worlds - if you're good enough to qualify and your bike sponsor loves you.

The Fastest Bike Of The Year
The Trek Session 9.9 Carbon
Aaron Gwin raced the Trek Session 9.9 carbon frame to a World Cup overall title in 2011. That takes away any excuses you might dream up for why you can’t ride it just as fast. This bike bleeds speed. It’s the newest version of a wrecking crew perennial favorite: the aluminum-framed Session 88. This is not a beginner’s bike, but for the racer who wants a no-holds-barred, leave-the-excuses-at-the-door ride; it’s an absolute dream machine.
WHO IS IT MADE FOR?
This is a purebred downhill race machine. Hang it on a scale right out of the box and you’ll wonder if the front wheel is still touching the ground (we did). We’ve seen this frame built with a downhill-ready kit at less than 30 pounds. This stock version is built with the privateer racer in mind. It’s expensive, but not out of reach if you’re serious about racing downhill.
WHAT IS IT MADE FROM?
The front triangle and seat stays are Trek OCLV carbon fiber and include Trek’s exclusive InTension technology. InTension is a low-density, ultra-stiff material that allows Trek engineers to build the complex shapes and molded areas of the frame. Trek claims this gives them a structure that is four times the strength of similar carbon-only frames. The carbon downtube is also protected by Trek’s bolt-on carbon armor.
The frame uses Trek’s Active Braking Pivot (ABP) rear suspension with a full-floater shock design. The rear suspension is controlled with a custom-tuned, Kashima-coated Fox DHX RC4 damper. The Fox 40 fork uses Trek’s exclusive Hybrid Air technology, with both air and coil for the spring. The frame also features Mino Link-adjustable geometry, an E2 tapered head tube, internal cable routing, an 83-millimeter bottom bracket, ISCG tabs, and a 12-x150-millimeter rear axle.
WHICH COMPONENTS STAND OUT?
Trek’s attention to their suspension tuning is amazing, but the component mix is what should be expected from an out-of-the-box, pro-level downhill race bike. It’s a smart mix of proven SRAM components and much-improved Bontrager house-brand parts. The SRAM X0 drivetrain provided flawless shifting during testing. The MRP G2SL is a proven chainguide. This version features a carbon back plate to save weight and still delivers the quiet and stable performance we love. It’s the kind of drivetrain you don’t have to think about. It just works.
HOW DOES IT PERFORM??
Custom Fox suspension: Trek has worked closely with Fox to develop the suspension components for the 9.9. The stock suspension has the feel of a factory-supported pro’s bike. The Hybrid Air system in the custom Fox 40 fork is designed to deliver the plush, linear feel of a coil and still allow the rider to fine-tune his settings without swapping springs. The fork uses an extra-soft titanium spring; the rider then adds air pressure to achieve proper sag. Whereas purely coil-sprung forks require the rider to approximate spring weight and use the compression dampers to fine-tune, the Hybrid Air system allows the rider to get exactly the right spring rate every time. It also makes setup and tinkering between runs much easier.?Trek valves the DHX RC4 damper with the same tune as the Trek World Racing team. If it doesn’t work for you, you need to ride faster. The adjustments are very effective, and we found our ideal settings quickly.
Mino Link: The Mino Link adjustments give the rider the option to choose a slack or slacker geometry without affecting the suspension performance. With a flip of the chip, the rider can simultaneously adjust head angle by a half degree and bottom bracket height by about 10 millimeters. This allows the rider to choose a racy, long and low setup, or a slightly higher and steeper park-style geometry.
Descending: The Session begs to be ridden fast. This bike challenges you to throw down your best lap time on every run. The suspension has a very balanced feel, with both ends perfectly suited to each other when set up properly. As with other ABP suspension bikes we’ve tested, the wheels seem to move quickly through their travel to get over obstacles without losing momentum, and they return to the sag point just as fast. This gives the bike an incredibly lively feel over rough terrain, yet it is predictable, consistent and buttery smooth. This bike also comes off the ground easily, so it prefers to be “flicked” down the trail rather than man-handled. Quick line changes and airs are no problem with the 9.9.
Cornering: Entering and exiting corners, the rider feels supremely fast. With the suspension working so perfectly, it doesn’t matter if it’s a high-speed berm or a tight, rock-strewn switchback, the Session handles it confidently. The 14-inch bottom bracket seems high on paper, but the center of gravity feels remarkably low, allowing the rider to dive into corners without fear of snagging the high side of a berm or an unseen rock. The Bontrager G4 Team tires bite like a pit bull on a cat, especially in loose-over-hardpack situations where other tires can break free quickly. Their relatively square profile has a very predictable breakaway point that can be pushed to the limit.
Braking: The ABP suspension makes this bike fully active over the roughest terrain, even when grabbing a handful of rear brake. The ABP works.
Pedaling: A 35-pound downhill bike feels pretty snappy, even on flatter courses that require pedaling. The RC4 shock provides a solid pedaling platform when set up with adequate low-speed compression damping.
TRICKS, UPGRADES OR TIPS?
The Avid X0 brakes are powerful and consistent, but they chirp when first applied. They also developed a sticky master cylinder that prevented the lever from fully extending by the end of the test. While we’re fans of most SRAM components, their X0 brakes are not at the top of our list. The Bontrager G4 Team tires performed well but showed signs of wear quickly, like a race-only tire. If you ride these in the park day in, day-out, don’t expect them to last long.
BUYING ADVICE
This bike will compete with the fastest factory-tuned pro bikes right out of the box. It is incredibly easy to set up, yet allows plenty of adjustment for any course or riding style. The only hang-up is the price tag. However, if you’re a privateer, you’re probably used to couch surfing or sleeping in your car at the races anyway. If you’re willing to pay for it, this bike will make you a contender on any racetrack.

2012 FOX 40 FIT RC2
Words: Jason Nixon
2012 FOX 40 FIT RC2 (click to enlarge)
When it comes time to purchase a downhill mountain bike fork, most people have Fox’s 40 on their short list. For 2012 Fox has made quite a few tweaks to their 40 RC2 fork that should help bump it up your list if you’re in the market for a new fork.
MSRP: $1600.00 USD
Featuring 8in (203mm) of travel out of the box, the Fox 40 FIT RC2 is FOX’s premiere downhill fork offering. Axle to crown measurement is 571mm at 8in of travel. Available in white or black diamond (as pictured here).
Purple and Green springs included with installed Blue Titanium spring (click to enlarge
Out of the box, the Fox 40 FIT RC2 fork comes with the fork as well as two springs in addition to a blue stock TI spring already installed. A 4 bolt style boxxer direct mount stem can be bolted to the crown or you can use a conventional 1 1/8″ stem.
FOX 40 preload adjuster (click to enlarge)
The stock spring is Titanium (Blue) and is suggested for riders roughly 150-180lbs. A purple steel spring is included for riders 120-150lbs as well as a green spring for 180-210lb riders. Additional springs are available to purchase for even lighter riders (black) or heavier riders (yellow). A preload knob is located on top of the left leg that allows you to dial in the preload externally.
In 2011, they added Kashima to their stanchions to improve the performance and debris shedding. 2012 sees an even more improved Kashima coating.
2012 sees a darker Kashima finish, coated in Japan, that is quite a bit more darker gold in nature. In addition to Kashima, they’ve also updated seals with new SKF seals that help reduce the stiction as well as improving on the FIT damper.
2012 Fox 40 Kashima (click to enlarge)
SKF Fork Seals
Fox has been working with SKF in Italy to develop new fork seals that are smoother and offer less friction. FOX wanted to improve the feel and performance of their products even more (much like what they did with Kashima coating last year). Lower friction for better performance and response. This new partnership has led to some great developments for Fox in their seal technology. These new SKF seals will be on all the 2012 forks from FOX all the way down to even their Evolution line. The seals are also able to be installed on any of FOX’s previous forks if you want some of the benefits of the 2012 line.
Combine these new seals with Kashima coat and we feel riders get a much better product.
The FIT damper has seen some revisions to improve the functionality. With the FIT design, it allows damping fluid to remain clean and isolated. This helps improve reliabilty as well as performance. In 2011 the compression adjusters moved to the top of the stanchion on the 40 RC2 and the rebound to the bottom of the right leg. This has carried over to 2012 again.
FOX 40 lowers and rebound protective knob (click to enlarge)
Rebound knob accessible once cover is removed (click to enlarge)
Fox 40 RC2 crown (click to enlarge)
The location of the hi and low speed compression adjusters on top of the stanchion allow for easy adjustment on the trail. Previous FOX 40’s had the compression on the lower part of the leg which wasn’t as handy for trail side tuning.
In previous year’s the Fox 40 RC2 external compression adjustments didn’t feel quite as wide as the range of adjustment in our 2012 Fox 40 RC2. Each dial still offers smooth actuation out of the box and gives feedback in a positive click.
Fox 40 FIT RC2 compression dials (click to enlarge)
The axle is a simple system of pinch bolts on both sides with an axle. It works well enough and leaves no question to proper installation at the end of the day. I found the axle removal can be a little awkward at times to remove as the axle doesn’t have a lip to help grab onto on removal.
On some bikes, the lower FOX crown itself can come into contact with some frame down tubes. While I think bike manufacturers should ensure compatibility with the fork, Fox’s lower crown could be revised to help alleviate this as well. While on the topic of possible improvments , the fork bumpers i’ve found can twist especially after they’ve been used a bit. It would be nice to see these bumpers improved more so that they stay in place better on bikes that don’t utilize integrated bumpers.
The Fox 40 still utilizes a IS mount for the brake. A 160mm front IS adapter is used to work with a 203mm rotor. If you’re looking to run a smaller rotor, you can’t at this time.
FOX40 FIT RC2 on Devinci Wilson (click to enlarge)
The 2012 Fox 40 offers a good range of damping and the additional improvements to the Kashima coating and SKF seals make it an even better fork in our experience. The chassis is stiff and helps hold lines in the roughest of conditions.
We installed our Fox 40 on our Devinci Wilson that we reviewed awhile back and have framed some thoughts as well on the fork for you all.
Fox 40 RC2 (click to enlarge)
I personally like how Fox has continually updated the 40 series essentially building upon a good blueprint. The 40 offers good damping adjustment to sit in its travel without sitting to low in its travel. It holds up well in corners and maintains a good ride height as well. Some spring noise was noticed but not a deal breaker by any means. The Fox 40 also offers more turning radius than a boXXer in comparison so while it might seem like a small point, it helps maneuver the bike in tight terrain if you compare the Fox against other forks back to back.
Hybrid Air setup on the Session 9.9
Trek’s Session 9.9 has a revised Fox 40 that includes what they’re calling Hybrid air that I think could be beneficial for future FOX users but isn’t available at this time for consumers who don’t purchase a new Session. Fox 40 RC2 Hybrid air is a system that Trek worked on with Fox that allows the user to add air to adjust the spring rate in greater precision in conjunction with the titanium coil inside.
- Our 2012 Fox 40 FIT RC2 weighed in at 3245.2g
Conclusion: Overall the Fox 40 RC2 has proven to be a reliable fork for us. It’s a stiff fork, stays up well in its travel, and has a wide range of adjustability. It isn’t the lightest fork out there but certainly isn’t excessively heavy when you consider that it is a coil fork. The FOX 40 FIT RC2 offers a lot of small improvements for 2012 that translate into a very solid overall fork. Put it on your list of forks to try out if you haven’t already.
