Additional Places

sven tours uganda

The Jinja area offers an array of adventure sports such as White-Water Rafting, Kayaking, Quad Biking, Horse-Riding and Bungee Jumping. There are lots of lovely places to stay, often with great views over the Nile.

Lake Bunyonyi

sven tours uganda

Lake Bunyonyi has an altogether more relaxed feel. Here you can swim, canoe or walk around one of the 29 volcano shaped islands or simply relax and gaze at this beautiful spot. There lots of lovely places to stay.

Bulago Island

sven tours uganda

Bulago is another wonderful place to relax. The entire Island is privately owned. The forest sectors are protected, the paths are well maintained and there are plenty of sandy beaches. There are good opportunities for water sports, beautiful walks or socialising by the pool looking out over the world’s second largest fresh water lake. It’s also reasonably close to Entebbe international airport. There are many accommodation options, all in great locations.

Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary

sven tours uganda

Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is a very successful project which aims to reintroduce rhinos to Uganda. From an initial import of 6 rhinos there are now over 30. As rhino horn is worth more than gold, per ounce, it is a never-ending task to stop the rhinos from being slaughtered for their horn. So, it is very impressive that not one rhino at Ziwa has been poached. However, this requires tight security. Each group of rhinos is monitored 24 hours a day and the entire 70 square kilometres is fenced. Nevertheless, when you track the rhinos on foot it looks and feels as if you are completely in the wild and as the rhinos are well habituated to the presence of humans, it is surprising how close you can get.

You can also go on a 4 hour walk and canoe ride to look for the famous shoebill in Lugogo swamp. The nicest accommodation is at Amuka Lodge .

Mountains to Climb (outside of the national parks)

sven tours uganda

There are a number of great mountains to climb that are not in the national parks. This means there are no park fees to pay and there is often a greater sense of adventure, as it can be difficult to work out the way to the top, particularly as the local people usually have no understanding as to why anyone would want to go there.

Mount Kaddam

My personal favourite. It’s a 3-day climb, with camp based at the same spot for 2 nights. It is necessary to hire porters, but I have yet to find a guide who knows how to get to the top. The issue is navigating the final ridge, which is a wall that encircles the entire mountain. I have made it to the top twice and failed 3 times. I now believe I know the way, but it is a bit of a scramble. A great adventure!

Mount Moroto

This can be climbed in a day. Similarly, there are some obstacles in terms of finding the way, but it is not as tricky as Mt Kaddam. I have climbed it once and the key is finding the correct start point.

There are plenty of other mountains in Uganda to hike up. If you are interested in doing this let me know and we can make a plan!

Mountain Biking

sven tours uganda

There are fantastic opportunities for mountain biking in Uganda. Particularly exciting is biking through National Parks such as Queen Elizabeth, Bwindi or Toro Semliki Game Reserve. It’s also possible to bike through Kibale NP and in and around Lake Mburo NP. Outside of the parks there are countless possibilities to bike on tracks with little traffic and great scenery.

Paragliding

I am a keen paraglider pilot and know some great spots to fly. If you are also a qualified paraglider pilot Uganda makes an excellent location to paraglide where virtually no-one else ever has.

Visit a Local Project

Come and spend some time with happy local children at Kyaninga Inclusive Model School (KIMS)!

Uganda’s GDP per capita is around $935. USA GDP per capita is around $63,500. So, there’s a lot less money for the government to spend. This has led to some shocking statistics, such as only 9% of children with disabilities are enrolled in pre-primary, primary or secondary education ( Unicef Uganda Education  ).

My wife, Jane O’Leary, is the director at KIMS. The focus of the project is Teacher Training, including Children with Special Needs in schools and running a model school – KIMS. For more information, please visit Kyaninga School  or better still come and visit the school itself!

8 Days Primates, Wildlife and Water Rafting Uganda Safari (Private tour) Tour

8 Days Primates, Wildlife and Water Rafting Uganda Safari (Private tour)

Jordan and I worked with Mukisa to create a bespoke, private tour in Uganda for 9 days this October. Based on one of their itineraries, we elected to visit Jinja for rafting, the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, Murchison Falls National Park, Queen Elizabeth National Park and Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. Richard emailed us back and forth when setting up the details of the trip. In the booking process, his recommendations for accommodations were excellent; the safari lodges were stayed at, particularly the one at Bwindi were stunning. We decided to book with Mukisa because they had received such excellent reviews and because of Richard's prompt, detailed and attentive communication. The trip lived up to all of our expectations. Joan, our guide, and John, our driver, made us so comfortable, informed and cared for, they felt like old friends by the end of the trip. They were knowledgable and caring, and we always thoughtful to stop on long drives so we could have a coffee and snack! I also want to note very few tour operators in Uganda that we spotted used female guides. Mukisa does and Joan was OUTSTANDING. I was thrilled to be able to support a LOCAL (i.e. Ugandan, not British) company that empowers WOMEN as our tour company. Yes, we saw the Big Five and the falls and the gorillas, but I also got a real sense of Ugandan people and culture (and food!) through my chats with Joan and John. For a safe, trustworthy company dedicated to exceptional safaris, book with Mukisa!

Our travel consultant from DAS was extremely helpful when my friends and I were planning our weeklong Gorillas Trek and Safari. He was very detailed when answering our questions and had nice suggestions for better and cheaper lodges than our initial request. Gorillas permits were also cheaper in Uganda. We did a mix of water on Kazinga channel, chimps in Kibale and gorillas in Bwindi which was absolutely incredible with Herbert. He made our trip very interesting with his valuable input and experience tracking animals on the game drives. Meeting with friendly Batwa pygmies was also very nice. Everything was well laid out and we have no complaints about anything. I recommend DAS and hope my friends also share their appreciation soon.

What people love about Uganda Tours

Let me start by saying that booking our Uganda/Rwanda safari through Mukisa was truly one of the best decisions that we’ve ever made! I am the type of person that meticulously plans every trip and will read through countless reviews, itineraries, etc. before making a decision. For this trip in particular, we were looking for a private tour that had a wide range of activities from multiple treks to game drives and cultural experiences. What initially drew me to Mukisa was the positive feedback from other guests and a mention on their website that they encourage/aid female tour guides. Upon reaching out through their website, I was immediately impressed with Richard’s quick responses, level of detail and ability to accommodate all of our requests. We started with the “10 Days Safari to Encounter Uganda’s Gorillas, Wildlife & Kigali City Tour” but Richard was able to help us customize the trip and integrate other activities that we were interested in - for example, my husband and I wanted to include a bike ride at the end of our trip. We originally didn’t think this could be part of our safari experience so reached out to a few local bike companies but received no responses. I posed the question to Richard (thinking it would be difficult to accommodate) and within 24 hours, he had found us a bike guide and adjusted our trip’s itinerary. Richard showed a tremendous amount of professionalism throughout the planning process, and loved that he met us in-person at the start of our trip! In terms of the actual safari, I could write several pages on all of the things that we loved but I’ll keep it to a few highlights: 1. The safari had an incredibly wide range of things to do, see, explore, etc. - from the types of animals (we were able to see the Big 5!) to the environments, ranging from jungle to forest to savannah. It was a lot to squeeze into 11 days but we truly feel like we left Uganda/Rwanda with a well-rounded experience. 2. All of the accommodations were conveniently located, clean and comfortable. If possible, we would recommend staying at the same hotel for at least 2 nights/each so you can feel settled and potentially upgrading 1-2 hotels, if you’re looking for additional amenities (e.g. swimming pool). Elephant Hab was our favorite hotel in Uganda. 3. We absolutely adored our guide & driver! Most of the other tour groups that we encountered had a single male guide/driver and we loved that Mukisa prioritized giving opportunities to female guides. Mable and Solomon went above and beyond to make sure we enjoyed every aspect of our trip and even made adjustments to the itinerary on the fly. Mable had a wealth of knowledge about the animals, culture, people, etc. and Solomon was an exceptional driver - making sure we saw all of the animals on our bucket list and navigating the constantly changing conditions. 4. It was quite clear that Mukisa has a strong reputation in the safari community. Several of the hotel managers and rangers made comments to us that they always enjoy working with Mukisa, and they have some of the best guides/drivers. If you’ve made it this far through my review then I hope you’re now considering Mukisa for your upcoming trip. I do not typically write extensive reviews but I genuinely think that this company is one of the best out there and will make this trip everything you could’ve imagined and more!
I posted my reviews on Google and trip advisor. But in short, it was amazing we enjoyed every moment of our trip. Truly the safari of a lifetime. Recommended by all means! Thanks again to all of you Richard! Martin and Andreea

Travel report UGANDA - Visiting the last wild mountain gorillas on the African equator

sven tours uganda

Visa and entry requirements Uganda: Passport required German citizens require an entry visa. Since July 1, 2016, a visa can only be obtained online on the website  visas.immigration.go.ug  be requested. Visa costs: 50 USD

Information from the Foreign Office about your trip to Uganda: https://www.auswaertiges-amt.de/de/ugandasicherheit/208752

Uganda is a landlocked country in East Africa with around 36 million predominantly Christian residents. The country borders Kenya to the east, Tanzania to the south, Rwanda to the southwest, the DR Congo to the west and South Sudan to the north. The two official languages of Uganda are English and Swahili and the Ugandan shilling is used as the national currency, with 1 euro corresponding to around 4,400 UGX.

The country's largest cities include Kampala, Gulu, Lira, Mukono, Jinja, Mbarara, Mbale, Kasese, Kitgum and Entebbe.

The equator line runs through the south of Uganda and the country is characterized by savannahs, jungles, the White Nile and large lakes such as Lake Victoria in the south and Lake Albert in the west. The highest point in the country is Margherita Peak in the Ruwenzori Mountains at 5,110 meters. The territory of Uganda lies largely on a plateau at an altitude of 1,000 meters.

Due to the tropical climate that prevails there, Uganda has a rich variety of plants and impressive wildlife. This rare natural beauty and the endangered animal species are protected by the government in a total of nine national parks and six game reserves. The most important national parks include Queen Elizabeth National Park, Ruwenzori National Park, Murchison Falls National Park, Kibale National Park and Bwindi National Park. These parks are home to elephants, mountain gorillas, lions, buffaloes, hippos, pelicans, antelopes, crocodiles, giraffes, chimpanzees, colobus monkeys, waterbucks and countless species of birds.

Today Uganda is one of the poorest countries in the world. The infant and child mortality rate in the country is very high, with around 12% of all adults suffering from HIV/AIDS.

Uganda's economy depends in part on its abundant reserves of mineral resources, such as crude oil, natural gas, gold, copper, limestone, nickel, cobalt and rock salt. The other half of export revenue comes from agricultural products such as coffee, bananas, tobacco, cocoa, sugar, cotton and tea. In addition, fish is mainly exported from Lake Victoria, especially Victoria and tilapia.

The capital and largest city of Uganda is Kampala with around 1.7 million inhabitants. Kampala is located not far from Lake Victoria at an average altitude of 1,200 meters. The main attractions of the capital include the House of Worship, the Gaddafi National Mosque, the Islamic Kibuli Mosque, the Roman Catholic Rubaga Cathedral, the Kasubi Tombs, the Bahai Temple, the Lubiri Palace, the Independence Monument, the Uganda Martyrs Mausoleum and the Local History Museum.

In December 2015 I visited Uganda for two days. There was huge traffic chaos in the capital, Kampala, and apart from the main road, hardly any other road was paved. Unfortunately, the traffic ended up significantly restricting my city tour.

Somehow the extremely dark brown sand there makes the entire city look dirty, even though it isn't too littered. So Kampala is not necessarily worth a trip, but the enormously diverse flora and fauna in the various national parks is definitely worth it. The highlight of Uganda is certainly the free-living mountain gorillas, but tours there are not exactly cheap.
