Time Travel through Vienna
In Vienna city center, go on a virtual journey through the history of Vienna at "Time Travel Vienna".
The location is historical; the ambiance is modern: Go on a journey through the centuries in the vaulted ceilings of St. Michael’s monastery on Habsburgergasse. Your trip begins in a 5D cinema that takes visitors back to the age of Roman Vienna. The program also includes the Black Death in Vienna with plagues of rats (experienced up close!) and the second Turkish siege of Vienna in 1683.
The Emperor Maximilian I., Franz Joseph and his Sisi as well as Maria Theresia (in the form of animatronic figures) are the stars of the "Habsburg Show", which takes a tongue-in-cheek look back at the history of their family. In the plague pit, you can meet the plague doctor as well as "Dear Augustin" in person. In the "Ballroom", Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Johann Strauss deliver a verbal exchange of blows. Carousels and waltz music provide a festive atmosphere.
Other themes include the two world wars and the signing of the State Treaty on 15 May 1955. It ends with an interactive horse-drawn carriage ride through Vienna. The carriage "flies" and rides over the Imperial Palace, Stadtpark, State Opera to Schönbrunn and the Prater.
The total of eight stops are equipped with state-of-the-art show and effects technology. A "tour" lasts around 50 minutes through the virtual 1,300 m² world of history in Vienna’s underground. The show is in German. Special audio guides provide a simultaneous translation of the tour guides as well as the show and film texts (10 languages to choose from).

Time Travel Vienna: A journey through Vienna’s history for all ages
The magic vienna history tour with a 5d cinema.
In addition to the typical and universally-known tourist attractions , you can occasionally find one or the other insider’s tip. One such tip is Time Travel Vienna , which is located in the first district between Herrenplatz and Stephansplatz.
Time Travel – 5D experience and show
The show, which lasts approximately one hour, is ideal for a rainy day or an occasional pastime, and is not too strenuous for very young or older visitors either. A diverse programme structure impresses visitors right from the beginning with a snappy 5D cinema experience , which is good at causing a few gasps – (mainly from mothers) or excited squeals (usually from the kids).
The second station leads the visitors through the cellar and directly to a private Habsburger show , where the Imperial family are cheerfully chatting to each other. This personal audience offers humorous insights into the family and professional life of von Maria Theresia, Emperor Maximilian, Sisi, and Franz Josef.
The tour continues to “Music in Vienna” , a dialogue between Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Johann Strauss and a fantastical carousel full of waltzing and lightheartedness. The “War Years” are also a part of the history of Vienna, although to a more grim period.
Experiencing wartime at Time Travel Vienna is optional. It takes place in a recreated air raid shelter with the siren signalling an air raid during the Second World War, before the end of the occupation time and Figl’s signing of the Austrian State Treaty are celebrated.
As a finishing touch – how could it be anything else – we are invited on a trip with Vienna’s most famous means of transport, the Fiaker (horse-drawn carriage). Having said that, this is not a conventional carriage, and is kind to animals, for that – but we don’t want to give too much away, but rather leave a few secrets for visitors!
How to reach the historical location
Address : Habsburgergassen 10a, 1010 Vienna Public transport: Underground line U1, stop: Stephansplatz or line U3, stop: Herrengasse and 5 minutes’ walking from each. Map :

Here are 10 suggestions what to do in Vienna:
- Historic City Center – free to see
After an hour at Time Travel, stroll through the old historic district of Vienna. Many elegant pedestrian zones invite you to some window-shopping as well as having a break in one of the many old traditional cafés in the center. The whole city center can be easily explored walking on foot. The inner district is surrounded by the Ring Boulevard. Take a city bike (first hour is free) and take a ride along the historical district by bike.
2. St. Stephen’s Cathedral – no entrance fee
There is no way around this gothic cathedral dating back to the 12th century. A very nice, though exhausting way to explore it, is to walk up the 343 steps that leads to the south tower for an amazing view of Vienna. Besides it is an experience itself to climb up that old narrow staircase and you do not pay much.
3. Vienna State Opera
Vienna has always been and still is considered the “City of music” All the great composers came to Vienna and became famous here. This had to do with the former Habsburgs Dynasty who were great music and art lovers. You can attend an opera or ballet for only € 10,– per person if you do not mind queuing a while for this standing tickets. It’s worth it!
4. Hofburg – former Imperial Palace
Stroll through one of the biggest palace complexes in the world where the Habsburgs used to live from the 13 th until the 20 th century. It starts at the Albertina Museum and stretches until Museumsquarter and even includes some parks, such as Burggarten (Mozart-Statue), Volksgarten (Sisi-Statue). Heroe’s square still shows the imperial touch of the residence of the Habsburgs.
5. Schönbrunn Palace and Gardens – Gardens are free to visit
Schönbrunn Palace where the Habsburgs stay during summertime is a MUST SEE! If you are not into palaces, at least pay a visit to the gardens which are free to enter . There is so much to see and to in this whole area, like the oldest zoo in the world.
6. Prater and Giant Ferris Wheel
Have fun at the Prater and go on a ride on the Giant Ferris Wheel. To enter the Prater which is the biggest park of Vienna as well as an amusement parks. At the entrance you find the oldest wheel in the world, which is also the slowest. The good thing is, that you do not pay a general entrance fee, but per ride. So, you can select where to go and what to do. A ride on the Giant Ferris Wheel is very recommended.
7. Vienna from above – Kahlenberg, Wilhelminenberg, Bisamberg – free views of Vienna
Vienna is a very green city and two house mountains Kahlenberg and Leopoldsberg are very close to the city center. With public transportation which is very efficient and inexpensive in Vienna you can ride up to the hill and enjoy the amazing views of the most liveable city in the world at the danube. Take bus No. 38A to the top and on the way back leave the bus in Grinzing for some winetasting in this famous vineyard area.
Wilhelminenberg offers another view of Vienna from above. Opposite to Kahlenberg is Bisamberg (another famous wine region) which offers excellent views of Vienna as well. Vienna is surrounded by the Vienna Woods and hiking is easy on ten marked pathways.
8. Central Cemetery – free to see
Vienna is known for it’s morbid charme , especially in November when day are grey. It is a tradition for the locals to go the cemetery on November 1 st . Central Cemetery attracts visitors from all over the world. You find the remarkable and sometimes bizarre looking monuments of Beethoven, Schubert, Brahms, Falco etc. Composers, singers, artists, actors, politicians, whoever played an important role in Austria you can find buried here. Attention: Mozart just has a memorial here, but he is buried somewhere else, namely in the cemetery St. Marx , which is also worth to be visited.
9. Naschmarkt, Yppenmarkt, Karmelitermarkt
Come here on a Saturday morning and sample food from all over the world. Besides a flea market attracts even more people on Saturdays. Vienna is multicultural which you best see here or even on Yppenmarkt in the 16 th district or in the 2 nd district Karmelitermarkt.
10. Sausage stands – Würstelstand
Have a quick lunch at one of the many typical “Würstelstand” and try a “ Käsekrainer” which is a sausage with melted cheese inside – it is delicious. Viennese beer is called Ottakringer (yellow design) or try Stiegl (red design) that comes from Salzburg.
