This San Francisco waterfront tour takes you from the Bay Bridge to Pier 39, a distance of about two miles. If that sounds too far for you, don't worry. If you tire out, the F-Line historic trolley runs along your path, and you can get on at any station along the way.

Start your walk at or near Pier 24, beneath the Bay Bridge, then walk northwest toward the Ferry Building and Pier 39.

The Bay Bridge  once suffered in comparison to the Golden Gate Bridge across the Bay, but with the addition of an elegant eastern span and the western span turned into a piece of artwork, all that changed. The evening display called the Bay Lights is an artist's installation of twinkling LEDs that create a nearly hypnotic effect. Waterfront Dining: You'll find two nice-looking restaurants near the Bay Bridge, tempting for their views and boasting gorgeous interiors by designer Pat Kuleto. Sadly, their cuisine doesn't match up to the scene, and prices are quite high. Go at lunch to enjoy the ambiance and view without going into debt to do it.

Rincon Park: This small park is home to an outdoor sculpture that looks like a bow and arrow called Cupid's Span. It's located next to the fireboat pier, and when the boats vent their hoses, the arching water spray adds even more to admire.

Pier 14: In the early 1900s, hundreds of thousands of ferry passengers traveled past Pier 14 to the nearby Ferry Building every day. Today, the rebuilt version is the best place in town to get a view of the Bay Bridge.

Ferry Building:  All those ferry passengers from the past are now replaced by shoppers and hungry visitors who come to shop and dine in the artisan food shops and restaurants. Herb Caen Way...  The sidewalk between Pier 1 to Pier 42 is named Herb Caen Way... in honor of Herb Caen, the Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist who wrote for the San Francisco Chronicle for more than 50 years. The three dots after the word "Way" are part of the name because of Caen's writing style, which included lots of - you guessed it - ...'s (otherwise knows as ellipses). Historical displays, poems, and quotations are set into the sidewalk, all worth looking down to find and taking a moment to read. The glass blocks set into the walkway are called the Embarcadero Ribbon, tying the wharf-front together with a continuous line of glass block surrounded by a concrete walkway.

It Looked Like That???:  If you detour across The Embarcadero at Washington Street, to check out the display showing how the area looked before the 1989 when a towering freeway overshadowed the waterfront area, you'll appreciate today's waterfront even more. The 1989 earthquake damaged the unsightly roadway beyond repair, setting off a chain of events that resulted in the ongoing improvements. 

Pier 7: This public pier extends 900 feet out into the Bay, edged with Victorian-style light fixtures and benches. It's the second longest fishing pier in San Francisco. If you bring your fishing pole, you might catch starry flounder, sea perch, halibut or striped bass. Or just take your camera and snap an Instagram-worthy photo.

The Exploratorium: San Francisco's justifiably-famous, hands-on science museum is located at Pier 15. It's so much fun that you might not even realize you're learning something and in the unlikely event that you get bored, their panoramic San Francisco Bay views are some of the best on the waterfront. Continue to the Golden Gate Bridge: The waterfront continues past Pier 27, and it's possible to walk all the way from there to the Golden Gate Bridge. Continue your walk using the guide to Pier 39 , then go on from there to Fisherman's Wharf to Ghirardelli Square . Past Aquatic Park, follow the waterfront path past Fort Mason and end your trek to the Golden Gate Bridge by taking the scenic walk along Crissy Field .

If you were to consider doing this trip as a land based holiday and wanted to also take in LA too, the drive from LA to San Francisco would take arounds 6 hours, traffic depending. However taking this very same route by cruise ship really inspires you to take it easy, thus making your California, San Francisco adventure an exciting trip with opportunities to see it all but relax in between ports and make the most of organised shore excursions or explore independently.

For us the choice between a long road trip, or sailing in luxury with fine dining and cocktails , outstanding service and views to die for is a no brainer.

How Far Is San Francisco Cruise Port Terminal From San Francisco International Airport?

If you are sailing in or out of James R. Herman cruise terminal in San Francisco Cruise Port, San Francisco Airport (SFO) is around 20 miles from the port. This is roughly 45 minutes by car and costs around $50 to $60 in a taxi.

Where Do Cruise Ships Dock At San Francisco Cruise Terminal?

Cruise ships sail from Pier 27 James R. Herman Cruise Terminal and Pier 35 on The Embarcadero which is only a short walk from so many attractions, plus the ferry for return trips to Alcatraz Island.

The Golden Gate Bridge connects San Francisco to Marin County, California, and is nearly two miles long, reaching across the Golden Gate where San Francisco Bay opens to meet the Pacific Ocean.

Designed by Chicago-based engineer named Joseph Strauss. Construction took place between 1933 and 1937, where construction crews braved treacherous conditions to connect the cities. Thus also creating employment between the communities. Little did those brave workers know that their efforts would become an iconic part of the landscape and indeed history.

A great way to take in the Golden Gate Bridge is via walking tour with a guide with excellent local knowledge who can tell you more about the stories and people behind this iconic attraction.

If shopping is your thing? You will find Union Square is the best area to head too. Packed with great hotels, shopping, dining options and museums. You will find an abundance of designer shops and stores such as….

But thats only the tip of the iceberg the shopping is extensive. Union Square is around 40 minutes walking distance away from San Fransisco Port. However is less that 30 minutes by tram, cable car or bus so easily accessible for cruise passengers.

Ride The San Francisco Cable Cars

The cable car is another iconic attraction, I mean have you ever seen a movie located in San Fransisco that doesn’t feature a cable car in some way?

Thus you can’t visit San Fransisco and not ride the cable cars. Single fares cost from $8, however it’s advisable to purchase in advance. Here is a map of cable car sales locations through the city.

If you are staying for 3 days of more as a pre or post cruise trip the City Pass offers you access to cable cars and buses, but also selected attractions and museums. Costing from $76.00 for adults and $56.00 for children up to the age of 11, it’s great value if you make full use of its perks.

Visit The Wild Sea lions At Pier 39 At The Fisherman’s Wharf

The sea lions are said to have started hanging out at pier 39 shortly after the 1989 earthquake. Now you can find 100s sometimes 1000s of barking wild sea lions hanging out at the pier at Fisherman’s Wharf. Fortunately the sea lions are protected, thus providing a safe environment to stay .

Check Out Ghirardelli Square

A short walk from Fishermans Wharf you will find Ghirardelli Square, this is the ultimate dining location in San Francisco. Originally a chocolate factory established by Domenico “Domingo” Ghirardelli in 1852. Ghirardelli Square still to this day hosts a Ghirardelli store and chocolate experience, but now offers a multitude of dining options.

This is the perfect place to grab a snack and glass of wine and take in the San Fran way of life.

Explore Alcatraz Island

Alcatraz Island has served as a civil war fort, a military prison and one of the most notorious federal penitentiaries in US history, holding prisoners such as Al Capone and Robert Franklin Stroud (The Birdman of Alcatraz). It has also been the setting of many Hollywood blockbusters.

Here you can wander the infamous corridors and see the cells once inhabited by the hardened criminals. But note that Alcatraz is only accessible by ferry which departs at 30 minute intervals and the crossing takes 15 minutes. Then its an additional 1/4 mile walk to the prison, so it’s a great idea to visit as part of a tour or shore excursion.

Visit The War Ships At Pier 45

Head to Pier 45 to visit historic war ships SS Jeremiah O’Brien and the USS Pampanito. Both of these historic ships were used during World War II and a huge part of the war effort.

The SS Jeremiah O’Brien launched during WW2 and and named after the American Revolutionary War ship captain Jeremiah O’Brien. She made seven World War II voyages, including from South America, India, to Australia and England to Northern Ireland.

She also made eleven English Channel crossings carrying supplies and soldiers to the Normandy beaches to support of the D-Day invasions. Check out if there are any events during your trip.

USS Pampanito was built in 1943 at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. She is a World War II Balao class fleet submarine. And was part of the elite force of U.S. submarines who patrolled the Pacific in World War 2. Pampanito  made six patrols during WW2 where she sank six Japanese ships.

This is a wonderful place to take the family, as the Aquarium of the Bay , celebrates and supports the natural ecosystems and habitats of San Fransisco Bay with walk through and interactive exhibits.

Tickets vary depending on which of the many experiences you choose, there are also discounts for families .

North Beach adjacent to Chinatown. The neighbourhood is also known as the Little Italy of San Francisco. Thus you will find many Italian restaurants, though it has evolved into a much more multicultural neighbourhood.

Here you can find street art, bohemian coffee shops. Additionally try climb up Filbert Street to the base of Coit Tower. Its one of San Fransisco’s steep hills thats worth the climb for the 360-degree views of the city and bay, including the Golden Gate and Bay bridges.

The San Francisco Oakland Bay Bridge, otherwise known as Bay Bridge was built in the 1930s and opened on November 12, 1936. The bridge made up of two bridge segments, comprising of a skyway single anchored suspension bridge between Oakland and Yerba Buena Island, and also a suspension bridge from the island to San Francisco.

This feat of engineering is 4.35 miles (eastbound), 4.33 miles (westbound) including the approaches. The bridge sits of the other side of the bay to the Golden Gate Bridge and can be seen from the San Francisco Waterfront.

Port San Francisco cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from San Francisco, California. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.

San Francisco cruise port handles over 70 cruise ships with around 200,000 passengers annually. The city has population over 870,000 (metro around 4,7 million) and is known as ”Everybody’s Favorite City” because of its diverse communities and cultural attractions.

Port San Francisco CA

Port San Francisco is managed by San Francisco Harbor Commission (appointed by the city's Mayor). The seaport itself manages the waterfront area (length approx 8 ml / 13 km) from Golden Gate Bridge anchorage, along Marina district, all the way around the city's northern and eastern shores (includes Fisherman's Wharf and Embarcadero) and southward beyond Candlestick Point.

Port of San Francisco (port authority company) is a state-owned revenue-generating agency. It manages the seaport's wide range of commercial and maritime facilities, plus approx 7,5 ml (12 km) long waterfront. The port is located on San Francisco Bay's western edge, near the Golden Gate Bridge. It is ranked as one of the world's 3 largest natural harbors.

The port area, besides the waterfront lands, also includes commercial real estate and docking piers - between Hyde Str (north) and India Basin (southeast). Among the landmarks under the Port Authority control is Fisherman's Wharf, Pier 39, Ferry Building, AT&T Park (next to China Basin), Pier 70 (Potrero Point). Huge piers jut out into the bay along much of the city's waterfront, which is bordered by the roadway Embarcadero (port's eastern waterfront).

• Port's cargo ship handling facilities were built in the city's southeastern corner - at Piers 80, 92, 94, 96. The seaport also provides full ship repair services at its drydock yard (managed by BAE Systems Ship Repair) at Pier 70.
• Fisherman's Wharf serves as a base for the city's commercial fishing fleet. This is also one of the Pacific Coast USA's best-known and well-developed tourist attractions. Here are located Pier 39, San Francisco Maritime National Historical Park, The Cannery (shopping center), Ghirardelli Square, Ripley's Believe It or Not (odditorium), Musee Mecanique (world's largest privately-owned museum), Wax Museum, Forbes Island (floating restaurant). Numerous restaurants and street stands serve fresh-caught seafood. Among the most popular dishes are Dungeness crab and clam chowder (both served in a bread bowl).
• Pier 39 is a major shopping center and among the city's best-known tourist attractions. The list of facilities and activities includes restaurants, shops, a 2-story carousel, video arcade, aquarium, virtual 3D rides, yacht marina, live street performances. At the marina is also the floating restaurant "Forbes Island".
• Pier 70 is a former (19th-century) industrial area with iron and steel mills, shipbuilding yards and manufacturing facilities (Union Iron Works, Bethlehem Shipbuilding, US Navy). Currently, Pier 70 is used by BAE Systems Ship Repair (a subsidiary of the British corporation BAE Systems Inc) and by Sims Group (Sims Metal Management company/metals and electronics recycling). In 2015, San Francisco Port Commission extended the seaport's lease agreement with BAE Systems (ship repair yard plus 2 floating drydocks) through 2045. The agreement sustains San Francisco's 150-year tradition of shipbuilding and ship repair services. BAE's shipyard employs around 250 skilled workers on a year-round basis, plus additional (up to 1000) local workers during peak periods. Both floating drydocks and the port's location make them ideal for cruise vessels. Here are also refurbished and repaired US Navy and cargo ships.
• AT&T Park (fka SBC Park, and Pacific Bell Park) is a large stadium used for Major League Baseball. The park is rented from the seaport by San Francisco Giants (professional baseball team) since the year 2000.

San Francisco Ferry Building used to serve steamship ferries to  Los Angeles CA , Portland OR , Seattle WA , Alaska and Canada's British Columbia. In 2003, this historic building was restored and reopened. Today it houses a premium gourmet marketplace (lower floors) and office spaces (on upper floors). The building also serves San Francisco Bay Ferry (also operating from Pier 39) to ports in Oakland, Alameda, Bay Farm Island, Vallejo . The other ferry operator using this terminal is Golden Gate Ferry (between San Francisco and Marin County CA / San Francisco Bay Area).

On January 10, 2019, was inaugurated the ferry service from Richmond CA to downtown San Francisco. Ferryboats depart from Richmond's new (USD 20 million) ferry terminal adjacent to The Craneway Pavilion. The new terminal also offers free parking (362 lots). The crossing ends at San Francisco Ferry Building, with crossing time 35 min. San Francisco Bay Ferry Service operates the new route with 4 crossings from Richmond (morning commute hours) and 4 return crossings from San Francisco (evening commute hours). Ferry tickets price is $9. Discounts are offered to Clipper Card users ($6,75) and to disabled/seniors/kids ($4,50).

Due to the Coronavirus crisis, the Port's cruise shipping operations were paused for 19 months (March 2020 thru October 2021).

San Francisco cruise port

San Francisco is a turnaround (home) port for major cruise lines, like Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, Carnival, Princess, NCL-Norwegian. The port is often visited as part of repositioning itineraries (transits through Panama Canal ) between Florida and Alaska. In recent years, also offered are roundtrips from San Francisco to Alaska and Hawaii.

The port's largest cruise liner so far is NCL 's Alaskan ship  Norwegian Bliss  (LOA length 326 m / 1070 ft, max capacity 4900 passengers plus 1730 crew). The maiden call was scheduled for October 3, 2018. San Francisco was the only call port on the 4-day Alaska repositioning cruise (itinerary Oct 1-5) from Vancouver BC to Los Angeles CA . NCL Bliss arrived at 9 am and left port at 7 pm.

In 2017, the port handled a total of 286,352 cruise passengers. For 2018 were scheduled a total of 82 ship calls and estimated ~300,000 passengers.

Port San Francisco provides shore-to-ship power capabilities. The technology (by Nidec Corporation, Japan) enables docked vessels to receive electricity from the city's power grid. From the berth, vessels can plugin directly to the grid which allows full onboard operations without using the diesel engines (being shut down right after docking). The Japanese company has installed such shore-power systems in ports Los Angeles CA ,  Juneau AK , Goteborg ,  Travemunde , Livorno , Genoa .

San Francisco cruise terminal

San Francisco cruise port terminal is located at the western end of San Francisco Bay in the midway between the Fisherman’s Wharf and the Bay Bridge. It is along San Francisco City's waterfront (Embarcadero) at Pier 35.

Most of the city's highlights are within walking distance from the terminal. Easily reachable are popular restaurants, hotels, theaters, museums. The cruise port is also at 1/2 hours drive distance from San Francisco International Airport.

San Francisco Pier 27 cruise terminal

The terminal has a new shore power technology which allows equipped cruise liners (like Princess’ or Carnival's vessels) to use the city's grid power system instead of their diesel engines to supply onboard services while berthed/docked. This innovation reduces the ships’ emissions at the cruise terminal.

The biggest ship ever docked at Pier 35 is RMS Queen Mary 2 . The new San Francisco cruise terminal (officially "James R. Herman Cruise Terminal") was inaugurated in August 2014. It was built at Pier 27 (at the corner of The Embarcadero and Lombard Street) and replaced the old Pier 35 terminal facility.

The new Pier 27 cruise terminal is operational since August 2014. It features a new modern building, electric shore-to-ship power, large holding areas, customs screening. Currently, the cruise port handles up to 80 ship calls and around 200,000 passengers. In 2013, the  Princess Cruises  ship  Grand Princess became the first-ever liner home-ported in San Francisco for year-round turnaround operations. The round-trip itineraries (operated between March 2013 and April 2014) visited ports in California, Alaska, Hawaii, Mexico Riviera.

The Golden Gate Bridge: the world’s most famous bridge and top photograph attraction on the Earth. It has 1.7 moles span and 120,000 automobiles get across it each day. On the western side are allowed bikes, you can also cross it on food at the pedestrian walkway.

Cable cars: date from the end of the 19th century. They are driven by an underground cable and run on defined tracks. The ticket costs $5. you can purchase it at the turnaround of the car.

Alcatraz: well-known prison, no one could escape it. Alcatraz is closed since the 1960′s. It is located in the middle of San Francisco Bay, on Alcatraz Island. You can take a ferry from Pier 43.

Fisherman’s Wharf: interesting marketplace, at Pier 39.

Union Square: shopping center. You can find top designer boutiques like Geary, Post, Stockton, Sutter, Powell, and Grant.

North Beach: don’t mistake it with a beach! It is a romantic European-style neighborhood. It is located along Grant avenues and Columbus, near Washington Square. Landmark is the Church of Saints Peter and Paul.

Chinatown: enter through the “Dragon’s Gate” at Grant Avenue and Bush Street and find exotic shops, temples, museums, food markets, herb shops, and restaurants.

Dining in San Francisco: try Japanese, Chinese, Indian, Greek, Italian, Russian, Spanish, Malaysian, French, Moroccan, Mexican or a tasteful combination of all those.

Nightlife in San Francisco: visit the “hottest” night clubs and enjoy different music styles.

Golden Gate Bridge tolls, ferry and bus fares to increase on Monday

Crossing the Golden Gate Bridge will cost 50 cents more for all drivers beginning on July 1. 

Drivers of double-axle vehicles and motorcycles will see tolls for non-FasTrak drivers jump from $9.75 to $10.25. But all drivers will see some increase in tolls, including those who use FasTrak or carpool. FasTrak charges will rise to $9.25, and carpool rates will increase to $7.25. And drivers of vehicles with more than two axles see their tolls each jump 50 cents accordingly. 

The toll increases are part of a plan passed in March by the Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation District, the agency that operates the bridge, as well as ferries and buses between Marin and San Francisco. Staff reported that the agency is facing a budget shortfall of $220 million over the next five years. Before the agency's board passed the plan, which schedules 50-cent toll raises each of the next five years, staff projected that the plan would generate $139 million in excess revenue. 

The district has already been increasing tolls on the bridge by 35 cents per year since 2019. 

Like most transit agencies, the Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation District has seen its revenue struggle to recover since the pandemic. According to a March memo from staff to the agency's board, traffic across the Golden Gate Bridge has only rebounded to 85% of pre-pandemic levels and commute hours remain 30% lower. Bus and ferry routes administered by the district have only returned to 50% of pre-pandemic ridership, the memo said, and the district has been collecting almost $1 million dollars less in fares and tolls per week. 

Fare increases of 25 cents for most of the district's bus and ferry lines will also accompany the toll increases on July 1, the second round of increases in a plan the district approved in 2023. 

The district secured a one-time payment of federal COVID relief funds and reversed planned layoffs in 2020. But according to the staff memo, that funding runs out this month, leaving the district in need of new revenue. 

When the agency's board passed the toll increases in March, it considered multiple options, with the 50-cent increase being the most aggressive. It chose the 50-cent increases, which would generate at least $25 million more than any other option, despite most public comments favoring a less aggressive approach. 

But the district faces a larger budget shortfall even beyond the scope of the current increases. Over the next 10 years, the agency's staff projected it to face an almost $650 million budget shortfall before the toll plan was approved. And in the next five, the district still faces an $80 million shortfall not covered by the toll increases.

"We have a lot of hard work ahead, and we'll be looking at additional ways to reduce expenses or bring in more revenue to address the shortfall," said Paolo Cosulich-Schwartz, a spokesperson for the district. "We have face similar situations in the past, and we're optimistic that we can close the gap."
