Thank you to the crew for making our Sea Cruise along Surfers and Gold Coast a great experience. Buffet lunch was super, service was impeccable. Will do the night cruise next time we visit. This is a must.

Lee Buttler

What a pleasant surprise this cruise was! Hubby and I went in the lunch cruise today, and I knew the second I stepped on board I would enjoy myself. I was really impressed with the boat: clean, modern and comfortable. The top deck was fantastic. After lunch, we stayed upstairs in the sun and beautiful fresh air. Lunch was perfect. The staff were fantastic and really interactive, always touching base with us to see if there was anything we needed and if we were happy. The view of the shores, houses and Gold Coast were absolutely beautiful. We even saw some dolphins!!

9 breathtaking waterfalls around the Gold Coast

Curtis Falls waterfall in Tamborine Mountain, Hinterland (image suppled by Destination Gold Coast)

When it comes to impressing visiting family and friends, is there any better way than going on an adventure and chasing a waterfall — or two? Because beyond epic beaches , and one of the world’s most renowned surfing reserves, we also have world heritage listed rainforests and breathtaking surrounds literally right on our doorstep. And the best part about these fantastic places and mind-blowing natural spectacles is they are entirely free!

So we highly recommend you clear your schedule, pack your swimmers and embark on a fun-filled sojourn into the green behind the gold in search of large pieces of falling water. Set your phone to silent and let the serenity feed your soul.

Here are a few of our favourites, all within an hour or so from the Gold Coast .

Beechmont Lip Falls 38.7km from Surfers Paradise Just a 50-minute drive from Surfers Paradise and nestled amongst the Denham Scenic Reserve are the Beechmont rock pools — or Lip Falls as the locals call them. Once you park your car (on Doncaster Road), it’ll only take half an hour to make your way down to the falls. Be aware; these walking paths are steep and narrow and right next to deep gorges. Where: 45-57 Doncaster Dr, Beechmont

Elabana Falls, Lamington National Park (image supplied)

Mt Tamborine Cedar Creek Falls 44km from Surfers Paradise Cedar Creek Falls are one of the better-known waterfalls on Mt Tamborine and a popular destination for locals and tourists alike (be warned – it can get quite busy). Your best bet is to explore the area via the Cedar Creek Circuit (3.2km), which will take you along all the cascades and rock pools. Where: Cedar Creek Falls Rd, Tamborine Mountain – To get there, take Tamborine Mountain Road until you get to Cedar Creek Falls Road, just past the information map stopping bay on the left. From there, it’s only a short drive down a narrow road and across a small creek before coming to the Cedar Creek Falls section and the car park at its entrance.

Curtis Falls 39.2km from Surfers Paradise It’s a short, beautiful walk through the rain-drenched Eucalyptus forest to the magical Curtis Falls. You’ll wander past towering trees and through a canopy of ferns, down to this miniature and photogenic waterfall. There are lots of cute creatures to spot along the way too, keep an eye for resident platypuses and wallabies. The walk should only talk half an hour or less to get down to the falls, but you will likely want to stay awhile and soak up the peacefulness. It’s just a 1.1km round trip, so you can knock it over in the early morning then stop for a spot of morning tea at the Curtis Falls Cafe. Where: 16 Eagle Heights Rd, North Tamborine  – Get there via Eagle Heights Road and park right at the entrance to the walk.

Natural Bridge, Springbrook National Park (image supplied)

Lamington National Park Elabana Falls 67.4 km from Surfers Paradise Elabana Falls are certainly a hidden gem located amongst Lamington National Park close to O’Reilly’s Rainforest Retreat (a great spot to grab a bite to eat after your waterfall adventure). Park your car at O’Reilly’s and make your way through the rainforest, past Picnic Rock and further downhill for another 400 metres until you reach the cascading falls. Make sure you refresh yourself with a snack or sit down before embarking on your way back up; it gets pretty steep! Where: Lamington National Park Rd, Canungra

Springbrook National Park Natural Bridge 47 km from Surfers Paradise As you probably know, Natural Bridge is a heavenly cave-like rock formation at Springbrook National Park that is home to glow worms and a colony of tiny bent-wing bats – it’s also one of the most photographed spots on the Gold Coast . Start the short one-kilometre rainforest walk clockwise to the Natural Bridge rock arch to get down to the action. Where: Nerang-Murwillumbah Rd, Springbrook – It’s super easy to find; just follow Nerang-Murwillumbah Road until you get to the car park signage at Bakers Road.

Purling Brook Falls, Springbrook (image supplied by Destination Gold Coast)

Twin Falls 40.6km from Surfers Paradise Start your 4km journey through the sub-tropical rainforest from the Tallabana picnic area or Canyon lookout in an anticlockwise direction. You’ll reach a small bridge, flowing water and immense rock formations after a couple of minutes (perfect for an Insta snap ). Keep hiking down the track until you come across two rushing waterfalls. At the base of Twin Falls — after a worthy hike — you’ll find a large rock pool perfect for a rewarding swim ! Where: Canyon Pde, Springbrook

Purling Brook Falls (image supplied by Destination Gold Coast)

Purling Brook Falls 37km from Surfers Paradise The Purling Brook Falls are immense, towering at over 100 meters in height and are naturally best visited after rainfall. Start your 2 hour hike clockwise along a scenic and elevated path into a subtropical gorge to view the amazing falls from below. Venture further down the track until you reach waterholes that are great for swimming . When you have had enough, prepare for a steady climb up through the rainforest, which will bring you back to the picnic area. Where: 63 Gwongorella Parade, Springbrook

Minyon Falls lookout in Nightcap National Park. (Photo credit: Jimmy Malecki)

Northern NSW Minyon Falls 113km from Surfers Paradise Yes, we know the following two locations aren’t on the Gold Coast , they aren’t even in Queensland, but it will take you a short drive along what is probably the most breathtaking scenic drive, until you reach Nightcap National Park in Northern NSW. Make sure you come prepared because getting to Minyon Falls can be quite the journey (well worth it, though). We recommend you start with Minyon Falls Lookout, providing you with outstanding views before adventuring further downstream towards the base of the falls. Where: Nightcap National Park, Newton Dr, Nightcap

Killen Falls 108 km from Surfers Paradise Killen Falls are undoubtedly one of the most epic waterfalls to dive into with its large swimming hole and rock pools. The rock has been eroded significantly behind the waterfall, forming an impressive cave. Ever wanted to take a waterfall shower? Well, at Killen Falls, that’s not a problem as you can swim across the pool and climb up the rocks just to sit right underneath the falling water. But it’s important to remember, whilst it’s tempting (and refreshing) to go for a swim in the rock pools and lagoons, it’s prohibited in some, so please adhere to any safety signs and be 100% sure it’s safe to swim  before diving in. Also, be sure to pack closed-in shoes, plenty of water, mozzie repellent and sunscreen (the sun will still get you between the canopy).

Last but not least, take nothing but photographs and leave nothing but footprints behind!

6 local activities for an adrenaline rush

Gold Coast Skydive (image supplied)

There has always been a section of the populous that actively enjoys being scared out of their wits. We’re talking about the ones who watch scary movies in the dark and will stand as close as possible to the edge of a terribly high drop — all in the name of a better view, right? Or maybe you’re more the person who gets their thrills by turning the toaster up in the morning and pushing the limits of how much to toast your sourdough before it burns.

Whether you are one of these people or not, it’s fair to say we all like to have our hearts rush, just in varying degrees, it seems!

So, when the only means to make your day is to have an extreme injection of adrenaline, you’ll be pleased to learn we have some adrenaline-pumping activates right here at home. No travel required. Read on to learn where you can make your heart skip a beat — all you thrill-seekers out there!

Skydive For obvious reasons, this one is right up there when it comes to adrenaline rushes. Throw yourself out of a perfectly good plane and hurtle through the sky reaching 200 km/h in just 7 seconds — sure, why not, sounds like fun. The gang at Gold Coast Skydive have you covered with skydives that will have you soaring through the sky above the Pacific Ocean before coming to a soft landing on the prettiest patch of sand around: Kirra Beach , no less. The instructors are seasoned professionals, but if you’ve never done this before, and you find yourself at the door about to jump, do not underestimate what’s about to happen! Where: Gold Coast Skydive, 18 Coyne Street, Coolangatta

Slingshot (Image: © 2018 Inside Gold Coast)

Sling Shot Usually, extreme activities, such as bungee jumping and skydiving, take place in wide-open spaces well away from crowds and onlookers. Not with Sling Shot. This jolt of excitement is sure to get even the hardiest of action seekers hearts’ racing. Found just off the beach in Surfers Paradise , this attraction has one sole purpose: to propel its participants skywards at alarming speed! How does accelerating to 160 km/h and reaching over 80 metres high whilst experiencing 6G of atmospheric pressure sound? We’d recommend this one before dinner, folks. Where: 6 Palm Avenue, Surfers Paradise

Hang Gliding Did you know that southeast Queensland is a mecca for hang gliding and parasailing? Why not incorporate glorious mountain vistas into having a death-defying experience at the same time? There’s no better way to take in the hinterland from high up above with another qualified human strapped to your back. Launch sites include the picturesque Beechmont and high above the valley floor, Mt Tamborine . Strap in with SE QLD Hang Gliding and experience the actual feeling of flying — sans jet engine! Where: 92/118 Tamborine Mountain Road, North Tamborine

Go Karting Car racing was definitely our career in a former life for reasons we don’t need to discuss here. The relevance though, is that driving a car around a track at super-fast speeds is a good time and the ultimate adrenaline rush. Shrink that down into a mini version complete with helmets and the possibility of beating your friends and you’ve got yourself an adrenaline rush. Test your racing skills at one of these sweet spots (we’ve got discounts too!): Kingston Park Raceway or  Slideways Go Karting

yacht cruises gold coast

SkyPoint Climb You may be reasonably chilled stepping into the elevator and ascending a staggering 77 levels to the Observation Deck . But no friends, that is not the adrenaline rush part just yet. Once on top of the Q1 — Australia’s tallest building — above the golden sand of Surfers Paradise , you’ll be 270 metres up in the clouds for 90 minutes, just strolling around gazing at 360-degree views of the Gold Coast at your leisure. It’s beautiful and terrifying and an absolute Gold Coast must-do for visitors and locals alike. Where: SkyPoint Observation Deck , 9 Hamilton Avenue, Surfers Paradise

Jet Ski Safaris Skimming across pristine water at high speed whilst experiencing a side of the northern Gold Coast you’re unlikely to have seen is what you can expect from Gold Coast Jet Ski Safaris . And the best part? You get to drive the ski, and there’s no need for experience or a license. Take a ski to yourself or pair up with somebody you trust, as the high-speed jinks offered range from a quick 30-minute blast to a grander 2.5 hr exploration of South Stradbroke and nearby mangroves — with an obligatory stop off at a beachside bar of course! Where: 7A 60-70 SeaWorld Drive, Main Beach

Splash out with these 3 re-opened Gold Coast water activities

With the news that we’re allowed to do fun activities outside again (besides exercise) some Gold Coast businesses have been allowed to re-open and get those good times flowing.

Because we understand that you’ve all about reached your indoor limit for 2020, we’d thought we’d collate some of our favourites for you.

Here they are, enjoy yourselves (at a safe distance).

Jet Ski Safaris Flying around on a jet ski is a very good time. And a thing you can now do again. Jet Ski Safaris are the people to see, they offer tours through the Gold Coast Broadwater and as of right now there’s 25% OFF all of them. Take the family along for some much-needed adrenaline rushes. Further info here .

Currumbin Boatshed Stand up paddle boarding is both relaxing and quite challenging if you’re up for an adventure. Which you should be because, staying inside for weeks is a lot. You can do exactly that, plus hire fishing gear from Currumbin Boatshed and make a delightful day of it on the water. Get involved here .

GoBoat Rent a GoBoat with your family (or hoursemate) and enjoy the waterways of the Gold Coast from a totally new angle. Cruise the Coomera River and canals with a picnic and escape from your house for a little while. Pick a quiet spot to drop anchor or cruise all the way around to Paradise Point, the choice is yours. Sounds like heaven honestly.

Availability & Booking Enquiry

Availability depends on demand but we will always go out of our way to suit your preferred date and time! please contact us on our booking enquiry form and we will be sure to get back to you as soon as possible

Where do your boats depart from?

Our boats are berthed at Marina Mirage. Please see the ‘contact us ‘ page on our website  for further details and a map. Marina Mirage is about 10 mins from Surfers and 15 mins from Broadbeach.

Where can I park?

There is plentiful free parking at Marina Mirage/Mariners Cove which you are permitted to use.  Please check signage at time of parking and if parking overnight consider street parking to avoid towing.

What about other transport options?

There are lots of ways to get to the boat! The most popular (and cost effective/convenient) is often via Maxi Taxis.

I am short on time can you please help me out with catering/drinks?

Yes, we also offer catering and drinks service for your convenience. Please request our full catering list as advance bookings are required. We offer a range of catering options from grazing boards, to canapes and private chefs.

(Catering and drinks service options may be affected by Government restrictions due to Covid, please check at the time of your charter what the current restrictions are)

Do you have Eskies on board?

Yes we have Fridges & Eskies and we also provide ice.

Where can we go on our charter?

We mainly operate in the calm, protected waters of the Gold Coast Broadwater. Where to go very much depends on what you would like to do and how long your boat charter is for so please feel free to discuss this with our team. In a 3 hour charter during the day our guests usually love a swim stop at Wavebreak Island where you can enjoy the range of island activities on board. Your skipper is knowledgeable in the local area and will make recommendations based on the conditions on the day.  If you don’t wish to swim in a 3 hour charter you instead opt to sail further north along the inside of South Stradbroke Island and see the millionaires mansions at Sovereign Islands.

In the evening we will generally sail north to watch the sunset and return to the southern part of the Broadwater to enjoy the city lights after dark which are just beautiful.

Will I get seasick?

We mainly operate in the calm, protected waters of the Gold Coast Broadwater. If we go offshore (into the open ocean) there is a possibility of large waves.

Are your charters suitable for guests with limited mobility?

We have welcomed several guests on board with limited mobility. However we do realise that each individual is different in terms of ability and what they are comfortable with. Please take a look at the 360 tours on the ‘ Our Boats ‘ page for an ideal of getting around the boats and do bear in mind a big step up (or carry) is required to board the boats at the marina. Our friendly team will be happy to discuss further to ensure you and your guests are comfortable prior to making a booking.

How do I book?

Click here   to fill out an enquiry form and you will quickly get all the info you need including availability, pricing, inclusions etc. You can also book online! Then it is simply a matter of paying your deposit to secure your preferred date. But don’t dawdle as we quickly book out and we don’t want you to be disappointed.

Can anyone recommend a tour operator re cruising the Volga. I have looked at 'Justgorussia' and 'expresstorussia' web sites but I cannot find any recent comments.

' class=

Just type "river cruise" in the forum search box above to get gazillions of recent comments.

Probably shouldn't include the word "Volga" in the search as neither Moscow nor St.Petersburg are on Volga, and only a tiny fraction of the route between these cities goes by Volga.

A Volga river cruise is more than a geographical voyage; it’s also a journey through Russia’s rich and captivating history. No other experience takes you so completely to another place and time. The Volga is Europe’s longest and largest river; it meanders through the stories of Ivan the Terrible and his rise to power, the two historic ‘Greats’ Peter and Catherine, and then on into today. It’s a unique opportunity to see modern Russia in the context of its intriguing history, ably assisted by friendly and professional academics and tour guides. A Volga Dream Russian river tour promises to leave you with an unforgettable afterglow of fond memories.

St. Petersburg. Petehof

Moscow to St. Petersburg River Cruise

Moscow and St. Petersburg are Russia’s best-known cities, but the towns of Russia’s historic Golden Ring are delightful too. The luxurious Volga Dream offers a unique opportunity to visit these Russian gems by sailing gently along the Volga River on an unforgettable cruising experience. In small, exclusive groups you’ll enjoy preferential access to some of Russia’s most significant cultural sites.

Volgogard. Mamaev Hill

Moscow to Astrakhan River Cruise

Your River Cruise on the luxurious MS Volga Dream takes you from Moscow along Russia’s grand Volga River to the legend that is Volgograd (formerly Stalingrad) and Astrakhan on the Caspian Sea. Along the way, you’ll discover the treasures of Yaroslavl, the oldest city on the Volga, medieval Nizhniy Novgorod and beautiful Kazan, the ancient Tatar capital. We plan our tour carefully to combine the very best of Moscow with a world-class Volga River cruise.

We love hearing from guests about their time in Russia and one comment often hear is how surprised people are by the Russian capital. We can’t say for certain what people expected but we do know that it’s always far removed from what they imagined! It’s been called a modern metropolis, a cosmopolitan city, an historic gem, an architectural treasure and a cultural powerhouse, among other descriptions. Majestic Moscow has always surprised our guests and left them with lasting and fond memories.

Russia’s famous Golden Ring is an archipelago of historic towns surrounding Moscow. Uglich is one of the oldest and was founded under Igor, the last Varangian prince. It once resisted the Mongol invasion and its ancient walls saw the grisly murder of young Dmitri, son of Ivan the Terrible. The impressive Church of St. Dmitri on the Blood, with its classic onion domes and blood red walls, is a fine example of classic Russian architecture. The tour ends with an enchanting choral concert.

This, the oldest city on the Volga River, and now a UNESCO World Heritage site, boasts a wealth of ancient orthodox treasures. The impressive Transfiguration of the Savior, adorned with murals depicting St. John’s apocalyptic visions can be seen in the Spassky Monastery. The Church of St. Elijah the Prophet is decorated with an awe-inspiring selection of rich frescoes. For a real taste of pre-revolutionary Russia, visitors are entertained by a costumed reception at the Governor’s House.

Close to the shores of White Lake once were the ‘tsar’s fishing grounds’. It lies in a place so serene that ancient monks chose to build no fewer than three holy sites here, including the Ferapontov Monastery. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, its chapels boast magnificent frescoes by Dionysius, one of Russia’s most renowned icon painters. The Kirillo-Belozersky Monastery was a refuge for many nobles during tumultuous times and later a fortress that successfully repelled invading armies.

The Karelia region is a vast and naturally beautiful wilderness that spreads all the way from St. Petersburg to the Arctic Circle. The glorious island village of Kizhi consists almost entirely of the traditionally styled wooden buildings of ‘Old Russia’. Among them is the famous Transfiguration Church built in 1714. Remarkably, and in testament to the craftsmen of the time, not a single nail was used in its construction! Kizhi is one of the favorite stops on the river cruise to St. Petersburg.

A typical rural hamlet brought to life by warm and welcoming villagers. Volga Dream guests are invited into local homes to enjoy classic Russian fare, tea with jam and ‘pirozhki’ (pies). Enthusiastic hosts share Russian traditions and the appeal of village life while proudly showing off their scrupulously kept homes and kitchen gardens. The tour continues with a brief bus ride to see a unique World War II memorial and then, for a real glimpse of Russian life, a visit to a local primary school.

Nizhny Novgorod

This was once a wealthy city thanks to its proximity to rich eastern trading routes. During the Soviet era, the city was closed to outsiders because of its military importance. It’s also where many political prisoners were sent to live out their days in exile. The 16th-century Kremlin ramparts offer spectacular views and the city is known for its elaborately decorated churches. For Volga Dream cruise guests, the highlight of the day is an evening folk concert performed by local children.

Sailing along the Volga river, the riverbank gradually ceases to be dominated by Orthodox churches. Instead, beautiful mosques appear as the river crosses into Tatarstan where the first stop is scenic Kazan, the region’s capital. Inside the white walls of the citadel, the famous Kul Sharif mosque and the old Cathedral of Peter and Paul stand side-by-side symbolizing the two faiths’ long and peaceful coexistence in the region. A concert of traditional Tatar music ends the Volga Dream tour in Kazan.

Passing the Zhigulevskie Mountains offers wonderful views from the sundeck before touring the city. One of the key attractions is the fascinating Space Museum, which offers a revealing glimpse of how the Soviet Union pursued its ambitious journey to the cosmos. The town is also noted for its beautiful esplanade, perfect for a relaxed stroll beside the Volga river. This in turn leads to the Samara State Art Museum. Founded in 1897, it is home to a collection of more than 16,000 works of art.

This city is best known for its close associations with cosmonaut, Yuri Gagarin. The Russian hero who achieved worldwide fame as the first man in space lived and studied here. Saratov used to be home to a large German community, a heritage that can still be seen in the local architecture. The Volga Dream tour visits the Radishchev State Art Museum, the first picture gallery in Russia outside Moscow and St. Petersburg.

Originally called Tsaritsyn, the city was renamed Stalingrad from 1925 to 1961 in honor of the USSR’s leader. During World War II, the city’s residents put up a heroic defense, repelling an advancing Nazi invasion. The battle for Stalingrad has gone down in history as a pivotal moment in the bloody conflict on the eastern front. The most ferocious and deadly fighting took place on Mamayev Hill, where an imposing memorial now stands close to the excellent Battle of Stalingrad Panorama Museum.

Saint Petersburg

If Moscow surprises, then St Petersburg delights. Peter the Great founded the city to showcase Russia’s newfound enlightenment. He wanted to show the modern world a cultured and advanced society. In short, he built the city to impress and in that he succeeded splendidly! The striking buildings were designed by some of the finest architects Europe had to offer and even now, the ‘Venice of the North’ never fails to enchant with its spectacular buildings and impressive canal network. It is a city of true grandeur.

Cocktails with the Captain

Commanding any ship is a complex role that calls for a long list of skills. Captains know their vessels inside out as well as well as the routes they sail and when things don’t go to plan, they have to make instant decisions. Above all though, the most important part of the job, underpinning everything they do, is to keep the ship and everyone aboard safe. The Captain’s cocktail party is a great and a wonderful opportunity for passengers and crew to get acquainted as the gets underway.

Matryoshka doll painting

There is nothing more typically Russian than a Matryoshka. It embodies the fact that there’s always something deeper to be found in every aspect of Russian life. Learning the traditional designs and techniques used to decorate these iconic dolls offers a pleasant diversion and some cathartic creativity!

Superb Service & Dining

Our restaurant serves the highest standard of international cuisine, freshly made by our Cordon Bleu Chef. Choose either a sumptuous buffet or set menu for lunch while dinner is always four or five courses with full service. High praise for the exquisite quality of meals is yet another constantly recurring feature in feedback from our guests.

Meet the Professor

From the Mongol hordes to Soviet times, Russia’s history is, like all of Europe’s, a complex web of political intrigue, war and peace, trade and treaties, as well as heroes and villains. Academics devote whole lifetimes to studying Russia’s long past and one of them presents a series of lectures shedding light on everything from Gorbachev to Chekhov, Khrushchev to Ivan the Terrible and of course, contemporary Russia. Our Professor is on board throughout the river cruise for informal conversation.

Beginner’s Russian

The Russian language can be rather beautiful and poetic and we know that many seasoned travelers enjoy trying their hand at different languages. Our onboard teachers provide an introduction to the riches of Russian, so guests can try out a few useful words and phrases on real Russians during the exciting river tours from Moscow to St. Petersburg or from Moscow to Volgograd!

Russian tea tasting

The drink we tend to associate with Russia is vodka, but tea, in fact, is the much more universal beverage of choice throughout the country. Guests will get acquainted with the Russian tea etiquette, a fundamental component of the country's social culture, and enjoy the traditional tea ceremony while cruising from St. Petersburg to Moscow or taking a Grand Volga river tour.

Russian Dinner & Vodka Tasting

All our dining is international but for Russian Dining night, the Chef includes a selection of traditional Russian dishes: Chicken Kiev, Kulebyaka and no Russian table is complete without Borsch. To add to the ‘Taste of Russia’ optional Russian dress, or at least a touch of Russian style, is provided along with enthusiastic help from our staff!

Russian Cooking Class

A plate of pelmeni might not look like much to the untrained eye, but it forms the heart of Russian cuisine and culture. Basically, it's a type of dumpling: small portions of meat and onion wrapped in a thin sheet of unleavened dough and boiled, a little like ravioli. Guests can join a Russian cooking class onboard the MS Volga Dream to learn how to cook this delicious Russian dish.

Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov Piano Recital

Some of the greatest classical music ever written comes from Russia. It’s hard to imagine a more fitting stage for a virtuoso solo recital by our resident concert pianist than the mighty Volga or a better backdrop than the heart of Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov’s own serene homeland.

Tucked in the San Joaquin Valley, Clovis, California, has a reputation among its population of 105,000 for blending small-town charm with modern amenities. Life is defined by tree-lined streets and friendly neighbors, and the community places a premium on family values and child-friendly atmospheres. Residents enjoy a slower pace of life and small businesses often find themselves thriving in the lively local economy.

One of the most prominent aspects of life in Clovis is the excellent school system and high graduation rates, as well as a crime rate that is around 20% lower than the rest of the state and 10% lower than the national average. Paired with a vibrant downtown that hosts everything from quaint boutiques to top-notch restaurants, the easy access to skiing and hiking in the nearby Sierra Nevada, and wealth of annual activities and events, Clovis is inarguably a great place to put down roots and bring up children.

Clovis embodies the state’s reputation of mild weather, which is often characterized by dry, hot summers and cool, wet winters. It’s easy to get outside all year round, and with the city’s multitude of green spaces, it’s not a difficult undertaking.  Clovis Botanical Gardens  and the Dry Creek Trail are two popular local haunts, and the abundance of golf courses, equestrian activities, and fishing and water sports add to the laundry list of opportunities that thrill outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers alike.

Other popular pastimes include perusing the antique shops, picking up local produce at the farmers market, or attending the annual Clovis Big Hat Days, which celebrates the community’s rich western heritage with live entertainment, a parade and local vendors. It’s easy to see why Clovis ranks among the 25 best places to live in the West.

Clovis: Gateway to the Sierra

Clovis is nicknamed the “Gateway to the Sierra” because of its proximity to the Sierra Nevada mountains. Just a short drive away, you can enjoy hiking, skiing and snowboarding in the winter months at popular destinations like China Peak Mountain Resort. During the warm season, the Sierra Nevada offers plenty of opportunities for camping, fishing and exploring the multitude of beautiful alpine lakes and forests.

Known for its family-friendly atmosphere and wealth of good schools, green spaces and recreational activities for children, it’s no surprise Elk Grove, California, attracts people from all over the country.

Putting down roots here is easy with the welcoming community and low crime rates, and the vast network of parks, trails and outdoor amenities make it the perfect spot to live for those who want to run, cycle or get involved with local sports leagues. The accessibility to the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta can’t be overlooked either, and the short driving distance to the Sierra Nevada mountains and California coast are huge draws to newcomers as well.

Plus: 6 charming small towns close to big city action

Elk Grove admittedly boasts many charming qualities, but one standout is its rooted sense of community and celebration. The city regularly hosts events, from the packed farmers markets to the lively concerts in the park and culture festivals all year round.

The economy makes it an easy place to settle down, too, with a range of job opportunities in everything from healthcare and manufacturing to technology and retail. The broad sweep of industries makes it a reasonable place to not only find a job but build a career, all while growing a family in a safe and cheerful community. Elk Grove also carved out a spot among the 25 best places to live in the West .

What are some things to do in Elk Grove?

You can find all manner of things to do in Elk Grove. Nature enthusiasts like to explore the local green spaces, such as Elk Grove Regional Park and Laguna Creek Trail, which are ideal for hiking, picnics and bird-watching.

For water-based adventures, the nearby Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta is the place to be with its abundance of opportunities for boating, fishing and kayaking.

Farmers markets, concerts and festivals occur frequently downtown, and history buffs appreciate the storied exhibits at the Elk Grove Historical Society. Top it off with the vibrant local dining scene and variety of shopping centers, like the Elk Grove Premium Outlets, and it’s easy to see that there are an array of things to do for people of all interests.

About 3½ hours north of San Francisco, Redding is best known for its abundance of outdoor recreation. Nature enthusiasts can explore everything from kayaking and fly-fishing on scenic rivers and lakes to cycling hundreds of trails that traverse not only the city but mountains, too.

Paired with its wealth of sunshine and mild weather, a reasonable cost of living compared with other cities in the state, and excellent school systems, it’s no wonder people from all around the country are interested in putting down roots in this charming and welcoming community.

Another great appeal of life in Redding is the healthy and vibrant job market. Residents are close enough from the tech giants of Silicon Valley, such as Apple Google and Meta to build impressive careers while still housing their families in a more relaxed environment. But the city itself also boasts a multitude of quality employers in its diverse market, which includes everything from healthcare and tourism to finance and management.

Redding has managed to maintain that beloved sense of small-town charm despite its bustling economy and long list of festivals, gatherings and community activities. It’s undeniably one of the best places to put down roots for young professionals, families and retirees alike.

How are the schools in Redding?

Residents are quick to cite the quality of schools in their community as one of the reasons Shasta County is a great place to raise a family. The area is served by the Shasta Union High School District, which includes several well-regarded high schools, and the Shasta County Office of Education oversees the elementary and middle schools. Residents can choose from a variety of private and charter schools, and young adults have convenient access to Shasta College, a reputable community college. Redding is also within just over an hour’s driving distance of California State University Chico, as well as other educational institutions.

Roseville, California, consistently ranks as one of the best places to live in the state, which is a fact that probably doesn’t surprise most of its residents. First and foremost, Roseville offers a strong and diverse job market with an economy that spans various sectors. It’s a burgeoning hub for technology companies and startups, as well as healthcare, retail and finance companies.

The city’s location makes it a good choice for commuters to both Sacramento and parts of the San Francisco Bay Area. Additionally, Roseville is home to a vibrant retail scene, featuring the popular Westfield Galleria at Roseville, a premier shopping mall, and the Fountains at Roseville, a high-end outdoor shopping and dining destination. Coupled with the low crime rates and quality healthcare facilities, Roseville is easily one of the most secure and convenient places to put down roots in California.

In addition to its obvious economic advantages, Roseville offers its residents a genuinely great quality of life. The city boasts a “Mediterranean climate,” with mild winters and warm summers that are perfect for taking advantage of the city’s parks, recreational activities and outdoor events (and makes it a  best place to retire ).

The school system, including the Roseville Joint Union High School District and Roseville City School District, is well-regarded for its commitment to education and provides several options for children of all ages. You can also find a strong sense of community in the city, which is evident in its multitude of cultural and recreational events, from summer farmers markets and concerts in the park to art and music festivals.

Is it affordable to live in Roseville, California?

The overall cost of living is higher than the national average but relatively competitive for the state. Sacramento, California, may be the state capital, but it also stands out among the crowd as one of the best places to live in the Golden State. The slower pace of life, vibrant economy and wealth of activities and amenities are just the start. Anyone talking about moving to California has to contend with the high living costs, but relative to other major cities in the state, Sacramento is one of the more affordable spots to settle down — indeed, one of the most affordable cities on the West Coast.

The more manageable expense profile makes it an understandably attractive option for young professionals, growing families and retirees. Plus, its affordability doesn’t mean residents have to compromise on things to do. Spend the weekend at the Sacramento Zoo, dive into local history at the California State Railroad Museum, explore the Old Sacramento State Historic Park or cycle all 32 miles of the American River Bike Trail. If that’s not enough, you can indulge in the abundance of local breweries and wineries.

In addition to its affordability and bustling activities calendar, Sacramento has a reputation as a diverse and friendly community. The city’s population is a rich tapestry of backgrounds, cultures and ethnicities, all of which are reflected in the area’s multitude of festivals and culinary options. The city’s commitment to green initiatives and sustainability has also made it a leader in eco-friendly practices, even going so far as earning it the title of “ America’s Farm-to-Fork Capital ” for its emphasis on locally sourced, farm-fresh cuisine. Tack on the proximity to Lake Tahoe and Napa Valley and you have to admit Sacramento is a great place for people who want a combination of urban convenience and outdoor adventure.

The economy in Sacramento

Sacramento’s economy is a lively blend of government, technology, agriculture and healthcare. Among the multitude of available activities and amenities, locals are quick to note that that surfing at La Jolla, visiting the San Diego Zoo, and learning about naval aviation history at the USS Midway Museum are some of the finest ways to spend a weekend. The Gaslamp Quarter is another renowned hot spot with its vibrant nightlife scene and wealth of bars, restaurants and entertainment.

The local job market is a hub of activity, and the city’s economic strength is spread out over a variety of industries. Biotechnology and healthcare lead the way thanks to major institutions like the Salk Institute and UC San Diego, but the defense and military industry also plays a significant role with numerous bases and defense contractors in the area.
