What Is a Smart Bag aka Smart Luggage?

In its simplest form, smart bags are any luggage with high-tech capabilities. Usually, smart luggage is hard-shelled and can contain any combination of features which can include:

Device charging
GPS tracking
Electronic Locks
Remote, app-enabled controls
Bluetooth connectivity
Wi-Fi connectivity
Electronic scales

These features make travel easier by allowing you to charge mobile devices, control TSA-approved locks from a smartphone, weigh the bag, and track it by proximity and GPS location.

Some smart bags even feature solar recharging capabilities, RFID-blocking liners to prevent identity theft and portable Wi-Fi hotspots in case you're in an area where you can't connect.

The Challenges of High-Tech Luggage

While it's comforting knowing that you can travel across the country or around the world with the assurance that you can find and protect your belongings, there is one problem: Airlines aren't as excited about your new smart suitcase as you are.

Airlines take issue with the lithium-ion batteries that power these smart bags. These kinds of batteries are known to be fire hazards, especially on airplanes. As a result, aviation governing bodies such as the International Air Transportation Association ( IATA ) and the U.N. International Civil Aeronautics Organization ( ICAO ) recommend that lithium-ion batteries not be stored in the cargo hold of an airplane. If a fire breaks out in the cargo hold, it's much harder to contain it.

To reduce risks, the IATA recommended in 2018 that airlines stop allowing the use of smart luggage with non-removable lithium-ion batteries. The ICAO followed suit in 2019. Many airlines, including American Airlines, American Eagle, Alaska Airlines, and Delta Airlines, have moved on their own to ban these smart bags.

What to Know About Smart Bag Batteries

While stricter regulations against smart luggage have been implemented, they mainly target smart bags with lithium-ion batteries that cannot be removed. That still leaves options for some of the coolest luggage that lets you track, charge, and manage your belongings. The new requirements mean lithium-ion batteries must be removable, even from carry-on luggage.

Smart luggage with removable lithium-ion batteries is still okay for travel so long as the battery can be quickly and easily removed. When checking the bag, you'll be required to remove the battery. If you choose to carry on your luggage, the battery can remain in place as long as the suitcase is stored in an overhead bin. If the luggage needs to go into the cargo hold for any reason, you'll have to remove the battery and keep it in the cabin.

Some manufacturers, such as Heys , have begun creating smart luggage that uses triple-A batteries that are safe to check. These suitcases don't have auxiliary charging for your other smart devices, but they do allow you to track your baggage, control locks remotely, and set proximity alarms. So, if you get too far away from the bag you'll receive a notification on your phone.

When in doubt, check the websites for the airlines you're using. Each airline lists requirements for both checked and carry-on luggage, usually on a page that has specific baggage information.

GPS Luggage Tags Are a Great Option

Travelers also have the option to forgo smart luggage entirely by using smart luggage tags. These luggage tags allow you to track your baggage using safe, battery-powered sensors that can be monitored via a smartphone app.

AirTags have become a very popular way to keep an eye on your luggage. AirTags use a very common battery type, so it's easy to replace when it gets low. Tile Pro is also a great alternative to Apple's AirTags. They work the same way, and most Tile Pro models come with replaceable batteries.

In short, lithium-ion batteries are considered a fire hazard. So in 2018, the U.N. International Civil Aeronautics Organization (ICAO) and the International Air Transport Association (IATA) recommended airlines not to permit lithium-ion batteries in checked bags that go in the cargo hold because of the fire risk. The TSA banned bags containing non-removable lithium batteries by the end of 2018.

Some of the newer smart bags use AA batteries and are safe to check. You cannot charge devices with them, but you can control locks remotely, track luggage, and enable proximity alarms sent to your phone.

So Can I Travel With a Smart Bag in 2022?

You can travel with a Smart Bag with a lithium-ion battery, but remember that non-removable batteries are banned. So, as long as it is removable, it’s ok to use as a carry-on bag. If you check your bag, you will need to remove the battery and carry it in the cabin. But, the airline employees may ask you to remove the battery and store your bag in the overhead bin.

PRO TIP: If you plan to carry on your bag, but the overhead bins are full, you will face a challenge. If the airline employees tell you that you need to gate check your bag and the battery is not removable, your bag may not be allowed on the plane. The stricter regulations solely apply to luggage with lithium-ion power banks. Bottom line, if your piece of luggage includes lithium battery power banks of any kind, make sure it is removable.

What about GPS Luggage Tags & Trackers

When it comes to tracking your baggage and securing it against identity theft, newly introduced smart bag tags on the market are the best option. With a safe sensor, you monitor your bag through mobile apps on your smartphone.

Another good alternative is trackers you keep in your luggage. These devices can locate your bag anywhere using a GSM signal. They are approved, provided it automatically turns off whenever out of range, which makes it follow flight regulations. In general, trackers provide the smart bag’s general location, and the smartphone app shows you where on that carousel your bag is sitting.

Plus, some of these options come with other useful features like hidden compartments and GPS trackers so that you’ll know where your luggage is even when the airline doesn’t. There are even some that can follow you around or double as a motorized scooter. And, you thought the future wasn’t here yet… Even if the more esoteric features aren’t as of interest to you, the best smart suitcases are a benefit for travel from keeping your smartphone charged to ensuring that your laptop along with all your other personal items are safe.

At their most basic, they’ll include a rechargeable battery pack that can be used to power your devices on the go, and at their most advanced they may include a GPS luggage tracker, putting your mind at ease as to the location of your baggage as it travels alongside you.

Some brands, such as Horizn Studios even include a personalised travel service, managing bookings and reservations on your behalf.

While not strictly tech-infused, gadget-friendly backpacks and rucksacks can also be a lifesaver when travelling, with secret pockets for valuables and dedicated pouches putting gadgets easily within reach when you’re rushing through security.

Travel restrictions

However, the rise of smart luggage has not been a straightforward one. With airports on high alert due to never ending terrorism threats and passenger safety paramount, some earlier attempts at smart luggage have been banned on flights.

Remember the exploding Samsung Galaxy Note 7 debacle ? Or flaming hoverboards? They’re to blame – with airlines unable to verify the safety of onboard batteries, luggage that contained lithium-ion batteries were banned from the hold – and in the case of some airlines, from being taken onboard as hand luggage too.

Major airlines like American Airlines, Delta and Alaska Airlines have all put restrictions on smart luggage. But all is not lost, provided you know what you’re travelling with.

So what can, and can’t, you take on board? Essentially, if you buy a suitcase that has a removable battery pack onboard, you should be fine – they’re allowed in the cabin and, so long as you eject the battery before check in, they can be stored in the hold, too.

However, some airlines are still a little touchy about cases with battery compartments built in, so just to be on the safe side, eject your battery pack before you go through security even if you’re taking it as carry on luggage.

What you definitely shouldn’t do is buy a case with a battery pack built in that can’t be removed. This is a sure-fire way to get you held up at the gate, where you and your belongings will be stranded unless you purchase a new, dumb case.

The more tech-savvy of the two is the ModernistLook Smart Pro. Large enough to house a 15-inch laptop, it has an integrated USB port to which you can connect up any portable charging pack on the inside.

Then, it’s just a matter of plugging your depleted device into the port on the outside of your device to charge while on the go. With a hidden rear pocket for valuables against your back and a luggage strap for hooking your bag onto your suitcase, it’s feature rich.

The future of luggage? It's looking like it'll be hands-off, and ride-on. With GPS trackers mastered and onboard charging as standard, the future suitcase will look to do the really hard work for us – wandering aimlessly through cookie-cutter departure gates while dragging our stuff behind us.

Smart luggage refers to suitcases with tech capabilities — typically USB ports to connect portable chargers for easy access. Some styles include their own portable chargers, while others require you to provide your own. Either way, you'll never have a dead phone while traveling. First and foremost, smart luggage needs to be high quality and durable, because no tech features will be helpful if your suitcase doesn't last. Additionally, look for features that match your preferences.

✔️ Portable charger: Some smart luggage includes a portable charger while others do not and just have a USB port. If you already have a portable charger you like, you can usually save a few bucks by choosing a style without one included. Our picks with portable chargers feature high-quality chargers that are great to use with the suitcase and without.

Do airlines allow smart luggage?

Yes, smart luggage is allowed on airplanes, but there are limitations that depend on the airline. Airlines do not want lithium-powered portable chargers in the cargo hold, so they ask that all portable chargers are removed from the suitcase before boarding and carried in hand. Even if you plan on carrying on your bag, you must remove that battery before boarding in case your suitcase gets checked at the gate. Because of this rule, smart luggage with a built-in charger or battery that is not removable may not be allowed on the plane. If you are using your own personal portable charger, check that it meets FAA and TSA regulations . Always check the specific luggage rules and size limitations from the airline before flying to ensure a smooth airport experience.

Over the last few years, smart luggage has gained massive popularity among business travelers, frequent travelers, and other tech-savvy individuals. But recently, some airlines have started to ban specific types of smart luggage. The lithium battery that comes with the bag could explode, which is why they’re considered a threat to security.

And now, a lot of travelers are left confused. They don’t know which smart luggage is allowed and which isn’t, and what exactly is considered smart luggage. In this post, we’ll explain everything you need to know about smart luggage – what smart luggage is, which smart luggage is banned and which isn’t, and other essential things that you should know. We’ll also look at the most popular smart suitcases and tell you which ones you should avoid.

What Is Smart Luggage?

When airlines refer to smart luggage, they’re talking about suitcases that come with a built-in battery. Sometimes, smart luggage is called smart bags, smart backpacks, or smart suitcases, but essentially it’s the same thing.

Here’s the official explanation from IATA (International Air Transport Association.)

Smart luggage is luggage that contains a battery used to power itself or to recharge other devices. The phrase “smart” refers to the additional capabilities that the bag offers as a result of having this power supply.

Various news outlets and blogs are using the term ‘Smart luggage’ incorrectly. They’re usually referring to any bag that comes with a unique and ‘smart’ feature (for instance, a neat organizer), even if the bag doesn’t come with a built-in power supply.

What Does Smart Luggage Do?

What makes smart luggage so interesting is that you get unique features that you wouldn’t usually have on a regular suitcase without a power supply.

Here are the most common features that come with smart luggage:

Luggage tracking . Although the exact tracking method differs between various brands (via GPS, GPRS, Bluetooth, or Wi-Fi,) the principle is the same – you can track where your suitcase is by checking the app.
Proximity tracking. With some smart suitcases, you’ll get a notification whenever you’re getting too far away from the bag. For instance, if you forgot your suitcase in a taxi, the tracker would notify you after a certain distance. “Whoops! It looks like you’ve forgotten your suitcase. Go get it back, cowboy!” You could then quickly ring the Taxi company and retrieve bags.
Charging devices . Almost all smart bags come with built-in power banks. The battery capacity in mAh differs between manufacturers, and sometimes you’ll get several USB ports with different power outputs for charging various electronics. We’ve found this especially handy in airports, trains, and buses, when our devices are on their last breath and no sockets are nearby.
Built-in luggage scales. Some smart suitcases have a luggage scale built in their handle. Essentially, when you pick up the bag, the suitcase will show how heavy it is, which is handy for meeting the strict weight requirements for carry-ons.
RFID-blocking compartments. Although this feature isn’t powered by electricity, most smart suitcases come with an RFID-blocking pocket. Nowadays, you can steal data with a simple scanner, which is why any credit cards and phones put into this pocket will not be readable from the outside.

Is Smart Luggage Legal?

Only smart luggage with non-removable batteries is banned. Smart suitcases with removable batteries are allowed, but the removable battery can only be carried on-board and can’t be checked in. This rule applies to lithium-ion and lithium-metal batteries, not regular AA batteries. You’re also limited to 100 Watt-hours on lithium-ion batteries ( Most commonly, lithium-ion batteries come with a 3.7V output, which means that you’re limited to around 27 000 mAh batteries ) and 2 grams of lithium metal on lithium-metal batteries.

Up until 2017, smart luggage was still new, and no airline batted an eye on its legality. But in 2015 and 2016, a few incidents started to appear with lithium batteries in electronics. In 2015, a couple of the largest airlines banned hoverboards on airplanes because of possible links between spontaneous fires and lithium-ion batteries. And in 2016, the TSA (Transportation Security Administration) banned Samsung Galaxy 7 phones on all airlines because they had a production issue that resulted in spontaneous fires.

This caused a significant shift in airline policies, and now airlines are extra cautious about any built-in lithium batteries, including smart luggage. In 2017, American Airlines banned all smart luggage with non-removable batteries, which went into effect on 15. January 2018. All the other major airlines soon joined the ban, and now smart suitcases with non-removable batteries are useless.

Are Smart Bags with Removable Batteries Always Allowed?

Unfortunately, no. Because the smart luggage ban went into action recently, some airline employees don’t yet know all of the rules or laws. Even if the rules state that smart bags with removable batteries are okay to use, sometimes the airline employees don’t allow them anyway .

That said, in 2022, the situation has improved drastically. Now, most airline employees know which smart luggage is allowed and which isn’t.

Is Motorized Luggage Banned?

Since 2016, Modobag has been making motorized luggage, that you can ride through airports. Since their bags come with removable lithium batteries, they should be safe to use, right? Well, yes and no. Even though their motorized suitcases technically follow the TSA rules, you’re pretty much asking to be stopped and questioned by using them. It’s a new technology that isn’t yet fully regulated and a lot of people who have used motorized luggage report being stopped by the airport security quite often. Even though motorized luggage is technically allowed, in reality, using them is a nightmare because you’ll be stopped by airport security almost every time. Even Modobag themselves are very vague about the subject on their website.

List of Approved Smart Luggage Brands

When the smart luggage ban came into place, all the smart luggage brands took huge losses. In 2018, two of the most popular smart luggage brands BlueSmart and Raden , announced they’re shutting down.

Away luggage was another smart luggage brand with integrated batteries, but they quickly added an option to make the battery pack removable. You could either follow their DIY instructions or take your suitcase to the nearest repair center and fix it for free. Because of the quick response, they managed to survive and now are still growing strong. Right now, they’re the most popular smart luggage brand on the market.

Do You Have to Check-In Smart Luggage?

Smart luggage doesn’t have to be checked in if it meets the carry-on size and weight requirements. That said, sometimes the airplane’s upper compartments are full, and your smart carry-on might have to be checked in. If that’s the case, you’ll have to remove the battery and carry it with you as a personal item.

Is Smart Luggage Worth It?

Yes and no. It depends on your personality and profession. Many of us are digitally-dependant and always carry around a lot of tech items, even when traveling. It’s not uncommon to bring a laptop, a smartphone, a camera, an e-reader , and heck; even smartwatches need to be charged.

One of our staff members is constantly running out of juice, so he swears by the built-in power supply. Also, the GPS locator and proximity-alert functions are pretty helpful because no one wants to lose all the valuables they’re carrying. Although many bags don’t have a built-in luggage scale, it’s smart always to carry a separate one, especially when meeting the strict European carry-on weight requirements. That would make having an integrated one would make my life easier.

But then again, if you’re not a tech person and travel only for leisure, smart luggage might not be for you. You see, smart luggage comes with some pitfalls as well – you have to charge the power bank, constantly remove the battery pack through security checks, and its price tag is higher than regular luggage.

Their products were a hit right from the start. Now, when anyone says smart luggage, Away luggage is the first thing that comes to mind.

Away luggage offers carry-on’s, checked suitcases, and suitcases for kids made out of polycarbonate or aluminum. Their bags are well made and come with a lifetime warranty covering cracks in the shell, faulty wheels, handles, zippers, and fabric tears. Their products are reasonably priced because they aren’t sold through third-party retailers who typically take a cut of the total revenue.

Another Popular Option: G-RO Luggage

G-RO is another well-reviewed, smart luggage brand that’s become popular. It all started in 2015 with a Kickstarter campaign, where they raised 3.3M$ for seed funding. They were quite pricy at the start, and now they’ve become even more expensive. They’re mostly known for their distinct looks, with the two enormous wheels on each side. These wheels make the suitcase easier to move around the city and are close to impossible to break.

They’re also made from high-end materials and many protection features, like a waterproof bottom skid plate, redesigned wide handle, and protected corners. A Smart Suitcase That Follows You: Ovis

Here’s something innovative – a suitcase that follows you. It’s called Ovis , and it began with an IndieGoGo campaign in 2018, where ForwardX robotics raised 1.4M$ for seed funding. Their products still aren’t available for purchase, but you can preorder one.

The idea is simple – for around $900, you’ll get a smart suitcase that follows you around the airport. The battery will be removable, will have a proximity alert, two USB charging ports, GPS tracking, a TSA-approved digital lock , and a weight sensor.

Smart Luggage That You Can Ride: Modobag

Now here’s something that might blow your mind – a suitcase that you can ride. If you don’t mind the weird looks and the absurd $1,495 price tag, the Modobag is a cool toy to add to your arsenal. Its maximum speed is 8Mph, and with a single charge, you can ride up to 6 miles. It’s not for everyone though, because it will only accommodate passengers up to 260 lbs.

The bag has around 85% packing capacity of a regular carry-on, comes with USB ports for charging and GPRS-GSM tracking in case it gets lost. Although the idea is quite innovative, we don’t think that the world is ready for rideable suitcases. As this bag becomes more popular, some Airports might also start enforcing electric transport rules inside the airports. That said, it’s a cool toy to brag about if you have a pile of cash laying around the house to invest in it.

What is a smart suitcase?

Usually a hard-shelled bag, smart suitcases have built-in electronic capabilities that often include USB charging ports, smart locks, GPS tracking capabilities, Wi-Fi and hotspot connectivity, and even scales. The exact features vary from bag to bag, but they all have the goal of making traveling -- especially if you're a tech-heavy user -- easy. Smart suitcases come in both carry-on and checked luggage sizes.

Are smart suitcases allowed on planes.

This depends on whether or not you can remove the battery from the smart luggage. Since 2013, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) prohibits spare lithium batteries in checked luggage from being stored in an aircraft's cargo unit. That means that most smart suitcases, which are powered by lithium-ion batteries, are deemed fire hazards and not allowed.

However, most airlines only apply restrictions to checked luggage with non-removable lithium batteries. If you can remove the lithium battery from the bag or just have a carry-on smart bag, you shouldn't have problems flying with it.

Can I travel with smart luggage on American Airlines?

The first to put restrictions on smart luggage, American Airlines and its affiliate American Eagle regional airlines still require that "If you are traveling with a smart bag, the battery must be removable in the event the bag needs to be checked."

Can I travel with smart luggage on Southwest Airlines?

Effective as of Jan. 15, 2018, Southwest Airlines states that "If the smart bag is in the cabin of the aircraft, the removable battery is to remain installed." In other words, you can bring along any smart luggage, as long as it has a removable battery. But Southwest makes it clear that if the bag is to be checked at any time, including if you have to check your carry-on at the gate, the customer must remove the battery first before boarding.

Can I travel with smart luggage on United Airlines?

United Airlines only allows smart bags that have removable lithium batteries . The airline also asks that you take out the battery before checking the bag.

Can I travel with smart luggage on Delta Airlines?

Also effective as of Jan. 15, 2018, Delta only lets you check and carry on smart bags with removable lithium batteries. Its guidelines also note that smart bags with a motor -- as cool as they are for drifting through airports -- are prohibited.

That's where smart luggage comes in. Although smart luggage could mean any type of bag with technology that makes your travel experience more convenient, it most often refers to pieces with charging capabilities via a removable battery .

We narrowed down the best smart luggage from our extensive tests, including more than 450 suitcases, backpacks, duffels, and weekenders. During a process that lasted at least six months, we analyzed each bag's capacity, design, value, and durability, and we evaluated maneuverability, portability, and comfort, too. First we tested the bags in our New York City lab, where we recreated an airplane set, then we sent the bags out to test during our team's travels. Whether you're looking for a lightweight hardside bag, an expandable softside suitcase, or even a smart backpack, our list has an option for you.

It’s spacious for a carry-on but doesn’t have an expander or many pockets.

While many of the bags on this list do not actually come with a power bank for charging, the July Carry-on does include an ejectable battery with a USB-C connector, so you don’t have to buy a separate one. The charging slot is located behind the integrated TSA lock and multi-stop telescopic handle, which you can conveniently adjust to 20 different heights. We found this 42-liter bag plenty spacious for a carry-on, although it doesn’t have an expander if you do need extra space. It does have a Y-Strap compression system on one side and a zippered mesh overlay on the other to keep clothing in place.

The carry-on was super easy to maneuver during testing — the handle was sturdy when we made sharp turns in our obstacle course, and the wheels glided smoothly from concrete pavers to carpet. It also held up well to our durability tests. There were a few scuffs after we threw it off tables and hit it with a baseball bat (and the charger did pop out at one point), but the outer shell didn’t dent at all, and the bag seems durable enough to stand up to lots of jostling during travel. We also love, as with other July luggage , the range of color options — from classy neutrals like sand and charcoal to stand-out shades like moss, plus limited-edition colors, too.

Briggs & riley sympatico domestic carry-on expandable spinner 22-inch.

This hardside carry-on is stylish and extremely durable.

It's on the more expensive side, and its expander isn't the most intuitive to use.

If you're willing to splurge a little on a suitcase, this sleek piece is the one. Though it's expensive, this Briggs & Riley carry-on is one of the most durable bags our team has ever tested. Its polycarbonate shell didn't dent or scuff at all after several blows from a bat, and our tests estimate the bag could handle five to 10 years of regular use without issue. We also found the bag to maneuver well, particularly on two wheels. It had some minor troubles handling bumps on all four wheels, but we didn't find this particularly problematic.

As for its charging capabilities, it has a “Power Pocket” with a pass-through for a USB cable. There's no physical port on the bag, as you'd connect your device to the battery directly via a cable. The only major note is that, while this bag expands, it does so from the inside, which is a little counterintuitive. But still, we appreciate the function!

This is a large carry-on and may not fit in the overhead bin if you overpack it.

If you’re partial to softside luggage , the Travelpro Crew Versapack Max Carry-On Spinner’s smart features include a built-in USB port and an exterior power bank pocket (charger not included). What stood out most about this carry-on during testing was the sheer amount of pockets and organization extras, including an exterior laptop pocket and one of our favorite features we’ve ever seen in a suitcase: a compression packing cube that you can zip onto the lid of the case to keep it in place or detach from the bag to remove it as needed. The suitcase is short and stout but a bit front-heavy, which makes it easier to roll it on two wheels rather than four, and we wish the wheels were a little larger to make it more steady. It proved to be extremely durable after we threw it off a counter and hit it with a bat, and it was surprisingly spacious for a carry-on thanks to all of the pockets and the generous two-inch expander, but keep in mind that it may not fit in every overhead bin if you pack it completely full.

Though extremely durable, aluminum suitcases tend to show dents easily.

If you’re looking for something stylish to turn some heads at the airport, this aluminum carry-on with hand-stitched leather handles will do the trick. Instead of zippers , the luggage closes with two TSA-approved clasp combination locks for more security. For that reason, you cannot overpack this bag because there’s no flexibility like there is with zippers. The discreet charging port is located under the handle, and the bag comes with a removable power bank that has both USB-C and A ports. Aluminum bags are typically heavier than other suitcases (this one is 10.5 pounds), and we felt like we had to use a little extra effort when rolling it over rough surfaces during testing. It’s also important to note that aluminum frame cases tend to dent easily in general, and this bag did dent when we hit it with a baseball bat, but it still felt durable and protected all of our packed items. We also hit the back of the bag right behind the handle and though the aluminum dented, it didn't damage the handle at all, and we were still able to pull the handle out seamlessly after. That being said, prepare for it to get dinged — it adds character.

This rolling duffel is a supremely versatile bag. For one thing, there are various ways to carry it: via a shoulder strap or two handles or rolling it on two wheels. Though wheels aren't always the primary method of movement for duffel bags, we found this bag to perform well in maneuverability tests just the same as its suitcase counterparts. The bag's look also makes it particularly versatile. The durable, matte black fabric is quite chic, so the duffel would work equally well as a gym bag and as a carry-on bag for a business trip.

The duffel also has impressive bonus features: a USB charging port and a wireless charging pocket, a padded laptop sleeve, a padded tablet sleeve, and a detachable wristlet. It's incredibly easy to stay organized with this duffel, despite it being fairly spacious for a weekender. But keep in mind that it is a weekender, not a suitcase, so its capacity is somewhat limited for longer journeys.

International airlines often have smaller size requirements for carry-on bags , so if you find yourself flying an international airline regularly, you'll want to get a suitcase that complies. This Delsey suitcase, which has a USB-A port for charging, fits the bill. While we adored the chic exterior with its luggage trunk–inspired detailing, we did find the bag to be rather limited in capacity (which isn't too surprising given the airline size requirements!). The bag does, however, have quite a few internal pockets that help with organization. One shortcoming of the interior of the bag is that the compression straps are not adjustable, which renders them useless if you can't close them over your items, as was the case with our packing list. But we do appreciate the bag's maneuverability, particularly on carpet.

It doesn't necessarily fit underneath all seats, especially if you overpack it.

Underseat rolling suitcases are a favorite of travelers who hate fighting for overhead bin space. If you don't mind giving up a little bit of legroom, it could be the right type of suitcase for you. This model comes with a USB-A charging port for flights, train trips, bus rides, or really any form of transportation where there's room. The one thing we'll note is that while this bag is super spacious — we were able to pack for a two-day trip in it — if you overstuff it, it might be difficult (or even impossible) to fit underneath a seat. You can, however, pair it with a larger carry-on, sliding the carry-on's handle through the underseater's sleeve. But when used alone, it's extremely easy to maneuver this suitcase, thanks to its four spinner wheels. We also found it was easy to roll over multiple surfaces, and it was able to tackle elevators, escalators, and stairs with ease.

Because of that dual accessibility, we think this suitcase is best for those who can pack in an organized manner. If you use the smaller compartment, it eats into the space of the main compartment, so there's a bit of planning necessary to pack all your items conveniently. Still, we found this bag rather spacious — albeit somewhat heavy, thanks in part due to Tumi's extra-durable ballistic nylon material. For charging purposes, there's an exterior USB-A port that connects to an inner pocket that can hold a portable power bank.

The bag has an expander, but we didn't find it necessary to use for our packing list as there was of plenty of room to pack everything for a long weekend stay in the suitcase. One thing to note, however, is that there isn't much inside the bag in terms of organization, so things can get messy fast without packing cubes . However, once you get everything inside the bag, it's easy to maneuver it across all types of terrain. And when you need to charge your phone, there's a USB-A port that can connect to a portable charger inside the bag.

Still, we found the bag to be very lightweight overall, weighing under three pounds. As for its smart features, there's no USB port, but there is a wireless charging pocket — which is, of course, only useful if you have a compatible phone. We tested a few more smart bags that didn't make the cut for various reasons, but are still worth considering.

Solegaard Carry-on Closet Original : This zipperless carry-on has some interesting features, like a built-in shelving system, but the wheels kept getting caught, making it cumbersome and heavy to maneuver.

Tumi Continental Expandable 4-wheeled Carry-on : While we loved this bag for its spacious, well-organized interiors and easy maneuverability, it's a bit wide for standard carry-on sizing.

Briggs & Riley Baseline Essential Carry-on Spinner : This bag received praise during testing for its deep main compartment and sturdy construction, but we found its wheels to be slightly stiff, impacting the suitcase's ease of movement.

All bags were also evaluated for durability, with our T+L editors pushing the bags off counters multiple times and hitting them with baseball bats to see how easily they scuffed or dented. After this first round of testing, we sent the winning bags out into the real world, where our editors will continue to test them while traveling over a period of six months. The port is where you'll plug in your charging cord for your device. Otherwise, you'll need to buy an adapter.

The benefit was clear after our durability tests, of which the bag showed no evidence of damage.

We loved that we could fit everything without using the expansion feature and that it slid easily into the overhead compartment. All carry-on luggage was tested in our purpose-built laboratory. First, bags were packed with a prescribed list of items to reflect what one might take on a four-day sightseeing trip in the fall . During the packing process, organization features and component quality were evaluated. Once full, we tested how well the suitcase rolled over a variety of terrains (smooth concrete, carpet, and gravel) before using an obstacle course designed to simulate a busy airport terminal to test maneuverability.

Next, we lifted the luggage into a simulated overhead compartment to check fit and how easy it was to pick it up and set it down again. Finally, we subjected the suitcase to stringent durability tests, including pushing it off the top of a shelving unit and beating it with a baseball bat. Both tests were repeated to check all areas of the bag for weaknesses. Based on these tests, we gave each product a score from 1 to 5 for capacity, design, durability, maneuverability, and value. These scores determined our category winners.

In all, we tested 41 pieces of carry-on luggage. The top performers are those included above. Here are some other pieces we deemed as honorable mentions:

Arlo Skye The Zipper Carry-On Max with Front Pocket : This suitcase performed quite well in our tests, particularly in terms of durability, capacity, and maneuverability, but the internal organization could be better and the price tag was a bit high.

Bric's Bellagio V2.0 21" Carry-On Spinner Trunk : Stylish, tough as nails, and stellar organization capacity are a few things we loved about the Bellagio. Our tester subtracted some points because the toiletry bag didn't fit and the price tag leaned toward the higher end.

Briggs & Riley Sympatico Domestic Carry-On Expandable Spinner 22" : For frequent travelers who can invest a bit more upfront for an extremely durable suitcase, this is a no-brainer. The interior featured a less-than-intuitive expansion feature and our tester struggled with the zippers.

COOLIFE Carry On with Pocket : We couldn't fault the long-lasting build or the value of this pick. Though generally a solid option, we noticed the maneuverability was lacking (performing some tasks better on two wheels and some on four), and the internal compartment made packing bulky items a bit more complicated.f

What to Look For in Carry-On Luggage

Although weight restrictions for carry-on bags vary depending on the airline you’re flying with, the aircraft size, and your travel class, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) states that limits can be as strict as just 11 pounds. Therefore, the weight of your empty carry-on affects how much you’ll be able to pack within it and is an essential factor to consider. Different materials and designs affect luggage weight; generally, polypropylene is the lightest choice for hardside cases, while nylon and polyester are favorite lightweight picks for softside cases.

Maneuverability

Imagine you’re late for your plane and need to run through a crowded airport terminal , dodging fellow passengers as you go. You need a carry-on that rolls effortlessly, whether pushing it in front of you or pulling it behind you and one that can turn instantly in any direction. For the best maneuverability, always choose a suitcase with four wheels instead of two, and make sure they’re the spinning kind that offers seamless, 360-degree movement. Good quality wheels and a sturdy telescoping handle will give you the same maneuverability on various terrains.

Organization

Even the most basic carry-ons will typically have at least one interior pouch or pocket, usually for separating dirty laundry or shoes or for stashing smaller items so they’re easy to find. More sophisticated options include multiple pockets of varying sizes and materials (perhaps a waterproof one for damp items), zippered dividers that split your packing space in two, and fold-out suiters or removable garment bags. Exterior pockets are typically reserved for softsided bags and can help stash passports and other documents you need to keep handy.

Hard vs. Soft Luggage

Hardside and softside cases have pros and cons, and which is better is primarily a matter of personal preference.

Hardside cases generally offer a trendier and more modern aesthetic, provide better weather resistance, are easier to clean, and protect delicate items with their rigid frame. However, they tend to show more wear and tear on their sleek exteriors than softside bags, so if you're choosing purely based on looks, keep that in mind. Also, hardside bags tend to have fewer pockets and organizational features.

Softside cases are more able to withstand rough handling since they won’t dent or crack and are often lighter and more flexible. The latter means that you have more wiggle room if you tend to overstuff your bag or need to pack odd-shaped items. However, if you're packing fragile items in a softside bag, you need to do so with extra caution as the soft exterior won't provide much protection from drops or hard landings. For breakables, we recommend packing in a hardside bag that can better protect items inside.

Dimensions vary from airline to airline (and sometimes from plane to plane), but the IATA gives the general rule that dimensions should not exceed 22 inches in length, 18 inches in width, and 10 inches in depth. These dimensions include any exterior pockets, wheels, and handles, albeit with the telescoping handle retracted.

A smart bag is any bag with integrated tech capabilities. Most often for carry-on bags, this means a built-in battery pack that powers a USB charge port so you can keep your electronics going throughout your journey. Be aware that the battery should be removable in case you have to check your bag since lithium-ion batteries cannot be put in the hold.

Before cleaning your bag, you should check the manufacturer’s guidelines since the process will differ depending on the materials. However, you can generally use a soft-bristled brush (softside luggage) or a damp cloth (soft and hardside luggage) to spot-clean any dirt or stains. Dry your bag entirely before storing it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.

There are handles on all four sides of this bag, so it’s easy to grab no matter where you’ve stowed it. It’s also protected by a full lifetime warranty, and it has the build quality to back that up. After more than four years of testing, this single backpack (plus a personal item ) has replaced nearly every travel bag or piece of luggage I use.

It comes in various sizes, but we think the middle-of-the-road version is the best. Cotopaxi also makes the Allpa in 28-liter and 42-liter sizes. But for us, the 35-liter bag is the best option. At 42 liters, this bag becomes heavy for most people to carry when it is fully packed, and we’d prefer that it had a more-robust hip belt. At 28 liters, the bag becomes a touch small for most people, and its internal organization feels fussy for shorter trips, such as an overnight. Cotopaxi also makes a hip pack , which is designed to fit snugly into the Allpa bag’s front top compartment. It’s a neat little addition to the bag, and it is worth getting if you like wearing fanny packs while you travel.

It’s organized, easy to pack, and easy to carry. The Allpa bag has a clamshell design, so it opens like a hard-sided suitcase—a large YKK zipper runs around three sides of the bag, allowing it to fall open into two halves when unzipped. On the right side is a deep compartment, spacious enough for two large packing cubes or half a suitcase’s worth of clothing (which you access through a mesh zippered flap). On the left, there’s space for one more medium-size packing cube behind a zippered flap. Above that there are two smaller pockets with high-visibility backing—useful when you’re looking for hard-to-differentiate personal items.

It’s secure but still accessible. The Allpa pack has two side-access zippers—great for on-the-go access, especially when the bag is hanging from your shoulder. One of these reveals a flat computer pocket with a padded false bottom; so if you drop the bag, it won’t land on the corner of your computer. The other reveals a “secret” pocket with a hidden zipper and access to the main compartment. All of the main compartment zippers are protected by security loops, which you thread the zipper through at the end of its run. This prevents anyone from subtly or quickly grabbing a zipper and opening your bag when you aren’t paying attention.

It’s comfortable to carry. The Allpa bag’s hip belt—which can be removed while the bag is on your back—is substantial enough that it’s comfortable to wear when you need it. With or without the hip belt, the Allpa bag is comfortable to carry over long distances. However, folks who have longer torsos (over 19 inches) may find that the waist belt sits a little high off the hips, unless you fully extend the shoulder straps. Speaking of shoulder straps, unlike the ones on our other picks, the Allpa bag’s straps are contoured to fit people who have large or small chests. It’s not a specifically gendered design, but our female tester noticed the improvement right away.

The Allpa pack is made with 1680-denier ballistic nylon, similar to the Tom Bihn Aeronaut 45 . (Denier is a measure of a fabric’s fiber thickness.) It feels similar to a strong canvas, but it has a more prominent weave. This is the type of bag that’s as easy to toss into an overhead compartment as it is into the back of a rusty pickup truck. And it also includes a rainfly, which is unique in this category.

Flaws but not dealbreakers

Though this pack is well organized for packing, it’s less ideal as a mobile office. The Allpa pack has a minimal amount of administrative organization—places to keep pens and papers, spaces to hold tickets, and so forth. This is where a good personal item comes in handy. However, if you want to travel with just this one bag, there are a few nooks you can hide things in. The front organizer is deep enough that you can also fit several small organizing pouches, if you want, or the aforementioned fanny pack.
We prefer the model without the TPU front. Cotopaxi does enjoy playing around with fabrics and colors. Sometimes the company has released the Allpa pack without the TPU-lined front panel. The TPU panel improves water resistance, but after many years of traveling with our bag, we’ve found that the TPU layering can begin to flake in spots.

Peak Design Travel Backpack 45L

An easily customizable large bag for long trips and expensive gear.

This bag was built with photographers in mind. Yet most travelers will appreciate its easy accessibility, clever tuck-away straps, and the elegant way the bag expands and contracts. The accessory cubes cost extra, though.

The Peak Design Travel Backpack 45L is a good choice for those carrying more expensive gear—especially camera gear. It’s also great for those who prefer a large, backpack-based packing system.

One bag provides many configurations. Some bags in this category are built to do one thing extremely well—be carried on your back. But the Peak Design Travel Backpack 45L is built to adapt. It’s the Swiss Army knife of backpacks: adjustable, customizable, and (if you spring for the extra cubes and organizers) an almost perfect system for a photographer or gearhead on the move. Most bags’ expanding mechanisms aren’t worth the extra zipper they’re built on, and they look about as attractive as a boiled ham splitting out of its plastic packaging. That’s not the case with the Peak Design: This bag looks just as good fully packed at 45 liters as it does compressed to a 30-liter daypack.

It’s expandable, with clever folds and zippers. You can access the bag through a back panel (which doubles as a computer and tablet pouch) as well as a front one (if you unzip the pass-through divider). You can also get into the main compartment via two wing-like trapezoidal flaps, which run along each side of the pack. In its natural shape, the Travel Backpack holds 35 liters, but an expansion zipper lets the bag swell to 45 liters. If you want to use the bag as a daypack, you fold in the top corners and snap them down, reducing the bag’s volume to a slim 30 liters. In this configuration, it will still feel larger than a normal daypack, but we think that’s a small compromise for being able to use one backpack as both your travel bag and your daily explorer. The bag itself consists of 400-denier nylon and polyester fabrics. It feels tough but not as tough as some other bags we’ve tested, such as the Cotopaxi Allpa.

It has fold-away straps, for easier storage. The Peak Design lets you tuck its shoulder and hip straps away when you’re not using them. But unlike any other bag we’ve ever tested, this pack has magnetic flaps on the back panel that open and close with an almost magical snap. Once you’ve played with them, you’ll wonder why every backpack doesn’t have something similar. A small, childish part of me still gets excited about tucking away the straps when I put the Peak Design into an overhead bin. Although the straps are thin, they’re still comfortable. The hip belt isn’t quite as plush as the one on the Tortuga pack; still, even when the Peak Design is fully loaded, the belt doesn’t pinch or dig into the body.

It’s great for carrying expensive gear. If you travel with a camera, you don’t have to use Peak Design’s camera cubes , but they do make carrying that gear a whole lot easier. The cubes come in five sizes. And if they’re situated properly in the bag with the provided clips, they line up with the Travel Backpack’s side-access flaps for quick access. Caleigh Waldman (a photographer for this piece and, full disclosure, my spouse) took this bag across the country for a wedding shoot. “I want this backpack,” she said after three weeks of travel. “I want to travel with it everywhere. With my cameras. Without my cameras. It doesn’t matter. I want to travel with it.”

It’s expensive—especially if you commit to the entire system of packing and camera cubes.
More complexity means more things that can break. The adjustable design and multiple zippers do add complexity, and complexity adds potential weaknesses. Peak Design covers all of its bags with a lifetime warranty , which should alleviate most people’s concerns. But if you’re particularly hard on your gear and still need to carry as much as possible, you might consider the Tortuga bag instead.

Patagonia Black Hole MLC 45L

Combines more organization with a simple interior.

This bag’s split interior makes organizing easy. Those who travel for work will appreciate this bag’s dedicated panels for organizing tech, books, papers, and assorted miscellaneous items.

If you travel often for business and prefer a bag that’s much easier to work out of than most of our other picks, you may like the Patagonia Black Hole MLC 45L . This bag has a front panel and assorted pockets that make it feel like a small traveling office.

It’s built like luggage but organized like your office. Of all the bags we recommend, the MLC (short for Maximum Legal Carry) comes closest to being a suitcase on your back, due to its large size, simple interior, and minimal external features. The MLC is also one of the simplest bags we tested, divided into two leaves (imagine a book with only one page), with a main compartment for packing and a second compartment for document organization and tech storage. The MLC has a built-in laptop compartment that fits 17-inch laptops and is situated close to your back; this protects the computer and keeps its weight closer to your body.

Despite its size, it’s comfortable enough to carry. Most carry-on backpacks of this size, without frames, become somewhat unwieldy when fully packed. Thankfully, the Black Hole MLC bag, like the Cotopaxi Allpa, is a welcome exception to this rule. The MLC has two shoulder straps, a hip belt, and an optional shoulder strap, for easy carrying. When they're not in use, or when you’re checking your bag, all of the straps can be stowed away easily. When fully loaded, the bag was pleasant to carry—not as comfortable as the Peak Design or the Osprey, but decent enough. I wouldn’t want to carry it all day across a city, but I wouldn’t mind carrying it through an airport to a car and to a hotel.

It’s built from high-quality materials, with durability in mind. This pack is made from recycled polyester, and the fabric is woven in a cross-weave that’s very similar to what Patagonia uses in its long-lasting Black Hole series of duffle bags . This is a material I’ve come across a bunch with Patagonia gear, and I’ve tested it thoroughly; it’s very tough. The front of the bag is coated in a weather-resistant TPU, for extra protection from the elements. The bag has large YKK zippers (the industry leader) and smaller YKK zippers throughout. Unlike the Cotopaxi Allpa pack, the Black Hole MLC bag has no security loops.

It comes with one of the best repair programs and a lifetime warranty. Similar to our other picks, the MLC is backed by an excellent lifetime warranty , and we’ve always found that Patagonia’s repair program goes above and beyond other comparable companies.

We wish the Maximum Legal Carry (despite the name) came in a few more sizes. The 45-liter capacity may be intimidating for some people, and there is no alternative.

A great starter option for one-bag travel, this bag is easy to pack, adaptable to most situations, and sturdy enough to take with you as you travel the world.

A scaled-down version of the Farpoint, this bag has shoulder straps that are slightly lower, to keep the bag’s bulk more aligned with smaller torsos.

Updated in 2023, the Osprey Farpoint 40 and Fairview 40 packs are both built around a hiking backpack frame that’s easy to carry over long distances.

It’s built for travel but designed for hiking. The Farpoint 40 bag is well made, easy to pack, and comfortable to carry over most mid-length distances—such as walking across a city for an afternoon. (For simplicity’s sake, everything we say here about the Farpoint bag also applies to the Fairview bag.) Osprey makes excellent backpacks for hauling around, and its lifetime warranty is renowned within the industry . The Farpoint pack also has an optional messenger bag–style strap, which offers some flexibility when you’re maneuvering tight spaces like subways or crowded city centers.

It’s simple to pack, but not as spacious as it seems. Opening the bag reveals a clamshell design; it’s deep enough to accommodate most large items, yet you won’t have to fumble awkwardly with zippers once it’s time to close up the bag. The feeling you get is not unlike when you’re packing a bit of sturdy luggage, and that’s something we love about bags like this one—especially when you use packing cubes . Osprey says this bag, when fully packed, can carry 40 liters. But after using the Farpoint bag for a few years, we’ve decided that its rounded shape seems to cut into that theoretical packable space more than other bags do. In practice, the Farpoint pack’s available space is closer to—but still less than—that of the Cotopaxi Allpa 35L .

It’s the easiest bag to carry among our picks. Like all Osprey bags, the Farpoint 40 has very comfortable shoulder straps. The years of design and consideration Osprey has put into its hiking backpacks are quite evident in the Farpoint 40. After more than seven years of long-term testing this bag, we’re still surprised by how great it feels to wear when fully packed. Crucially, the straps of the Farpoint 40 stow away neatly behind a zippered panel. However, when you’re using the shoulder straps, the design forces you to also use the hip straps. Though this isn’t a huge issue, if you prefer a sleeker look or would rather have the option of using shoulder straps without hip straps, the Cotopaxi Allpa pack is more flexible, and it lets you hide the waist straps while the bag is on your back.

The Fairview 40 has the same features, in a scaled-down size. The Farpoint 40 and the Fairview 40 packs basically have the same design, but the Fairview pack is made for someone with a more-diminutive torso. It’s also slightly lighter. However, it has the features and durability of the Farpoint bag. It also has the same hip belt and adjustability. On both, the chest-strap clip is also equipped with a small security whistle that’s surprisingly loud. It’s a handy feature for anyone traveling in unfamiliar environments.

For a smaller carry-on travel backpack, this one has little to not like. However, we do wish Osprey would trade some of the sleeker contours for a little more interior space.

Tortuga Travel Backpack Pro 40L

A suitcase to carry on your back.

For dedicated single-bag travelers, this water-resistant, durable bag is easy to pack and to travel with. And it’s comfortable to wear over endless miles—as long as you don’t mind the heavier weight.

The Tortuga Travel Backpack Pro 40L maximizes packing space in a bag that’s durable, water-resistant, and customizable to fit most torso lengths (there’s also a 30L version ), with plenty of organizational features to suit any digital nomad.

It’s like a suitcase, with backpack straps. The Tortuga Travel Backpack Pro 40L is built to occupy the maximum carry-on space available. It’s a nearly perfect blend of backpack and luggage. On the outside, its tear-resistant sailcloth and sealed zippers provide ample protection from sharp objects and the elements. Opening the main clamshell zipper reveals a cavernous interior and a few organizational features that make the bag a cinch to pack. The front panel is a particular standout, great for keeping track of electronics and chargers. Of all the bags we tested, the Tortuga strikes the closest balance between the carrying comfort of a hiking backpack and the space and organization of a piece of luggage.

It’s as easy to pack as luggage. When it comes to packing, the Tortuga pack has a soothingly minimal interior, as any good suitcase should. In addition to the bag’s cavernous main pocket, its interior lid has a large vented panel. The panel is too narrow to hold additional packing cubes, but it’s great for holding light jackets or doubling as a dirty-laundry bag (if you’re really committed to one-bag travel). The Tortuga is available as a 40-liter pack (the maximum space for a carry-on bag), which we tested; there is also a 30-liter version, which is compliant with some intra-European flights. The more-diminutive version is a decent choice for weekend travel or for minimalist travelers—but for those uses, we prefer the space-saving profile and extra internal organization of the Cotopaxi Allpa 35L bag.

It’s very customizable. The Tortuga pack is the most adjustable model we tested, thanks to its adjustable torso length, shoulder straps, and waist-belt system. The adjustable strap system lets you manipulate the location of the shoulder straps (video) to fit a wider variety of body sizes, in both the 30- and 40-liter versions. Of the packs we’ve tested, this one (with its included load-adjuster straps at the top, to prevent the bag’s weight from sagging toward your lumbar region) is the best at distributing its weight (4½ pounds when empty—roughly 1½ pounds more than most of our other picks, except the Peak Design ). The hip straps are removable if you need, but the shoulder straps are not stowable.

Its straps don’t stow away. Some people, especially those who are hard on their gear, may consider not being able to remove or stow the shoulder straps (as they can with our other picks, like the Cotopaxi Allpa ) a disqualifying factor. But after years of testing, traveling with, and occasionally checking our bag, we haven’t had an issue. However, if these mysteries beneath the airport also make you nervous, you might prefer our picks with easy-to-stow straps, such as the Peak Design.
It's heavy. We’ve fielded complaints from some testers who said that older models of this bag were too heavy for them to carry, even with the padded hip belt and adjustable straps. The additional padding does add weight. At 4½ pounds, this latest Tortuga bag is more than half a pound lighter than it used to be (the difference is noticeable), and it weighs the same as the equally large Peak Design pack. We are currently testing a new, lighter, and less-expensive version of this pack—aptly named the Travel Backpack Lite 40L —and will report back soon. In the meantime, if you think you would struggle carrying the Tortuga, we strenuously encourage you to consider one of our more-manageable picks, like the Cotopaxi Allpa 35L.

If you want to travel like a backpacker but also fit in at a board meeting (and you have the budget for it): Consider the Tom Bihn Aeronaut 45 . This bag’s reputation for durability, adaptability, and a low-key aesthetic make it a favorite among many dedicated one-bag travelers. And after testing it, we think it’s a great bag too. That said, for the bag to really stand out against other backpacks—and to take full advantage of its carrying adaptability—you need to buy the internal frame , the hip belt , and (if you’re traveling with a suit or jacket) the shoulder strap . On a bag that already costs $330, all of this adds up. Everything about the Tom Bihn bag (the fabric, the zippers, the quality of construction) feels like an upgrade from other bags, but it’s simply too pricey, and its design is too rarified and specific for most people. The biggest flaw, from our perspective—apart from the price—is that the Tom Bihn bag lacks a dedicated laptop pocket. In its place, the company sells laptop sleeves (a fine version if you don’t have one) that clip into the bag’s central compartment. Not everyone needs a dedicated laptop pocket, but we prefer the more secure feeling of bags that do.

If you want a budget pick (but only when it’s on sale): The eBags Mother Lode Travel Backpack (our former budget pick) is still your best budget option, if you can catch it on sale for at least half off the list price. It’s not comfortable enough for trekking long distances on foot, but there are plenty of external pockets for organization, a laptop sleeve (which holds the weight of your computer high up on your shoulders), and an easy-to-access main compartment. This pack also has the largest capacity of any bags we tested, expanding to 65 liters—well beyond any airline’s regulated 45-liter limit. However, the bag’s casual-to-basic looks might not be to everyone’s taste. In 2024, eBags raised the price of the Mother Lode to $200. We have seen it on sale for $100, and in our opinion it’s worth getting only at the sale price.

We’ve narrowed our specifications for a great bag to the following list of features, ordered from most relevant to least:

Front- or back-panel loader or clamshell opening, for the main compartment: As with any good piece of luggage, with this type of bag, you should be able to open it and see everything you’ve packed. When you have a bag with a panel-loading or clamshell design—rather than a traditional, top-opening design—you can pack and unpack it just as you would a suitcase.

Backpack strap comfort and design: You never know when you’ll be walking farther with your bag than you’d intended. The more comfortable and well designed the straps are, the easier traveling will be. “Ideally, you want a bag’s shoulder straps to adjust to the angle of your shoulders,” said Eytan Levy of Snarky Nomad. “Good shoulder straps are the difference between an easy trip and a hard trip.”
Hip-belt comfort and design: A hip belt transfers heavy loads from your back and shoulders onto your hips, letting your legs—not your back—bear the brunt of the weight. Just having a waist belt is a plus, but having a padded and sculpted one—especially on bags with over 40 liters of volume—makes a world of difference.
Material quality: Durability is critical for any type of luggage, but especially for a backpack that will be your only bag. Most bags worth considering are made of nylon, which resists abrasion more than polyester fabrics of similar density. Spending more, however, can get you exotic, light, and strong materials, such as Dyneema or sailcloth.
Weight: Once the bags arrived, we weighed each one ourselves. Most of the bags weighed within a few pounds of one another. But unless you’re very strict with yourself, by the time you’re packed for a two-week journey, all bags are going to feel equally massive, even if one is just 2 pounds heavier than another when empty.
Stowable straps: These are nice to have, but they aren’t absolutely necessary. “The more often you need to check a bag, the more often you need to hide away the straps,” Levy said. “But if the straps are tough enough, it doesn’t matter.”
Accessory pocket layout and design: Some people will love an accessory pocket that has a specific space for everything; others may find that feature constricting and unadaptable. We prioritized bags with simple designs that guided our packing without constraining us.
Style: This is purely subjective. We preferred bags that had a minimalist exterior style, but not all of our picks will please everyone. Most of the people we spoke with, however, preferred not to stick out like a tourist wearing a large, colorful backpack, if they could avoid it.

During testing, we flew across the country with these bags, took weekend trips to nearby cities, lived out of them on extended trips, and tried them locally in our daily routines. We also packed and unpacked each bag, using a standardized set of weeklong travel necessities and accessories, to see how well the internal organizational features (or lack thereof) aided or got in the way of efficient packing.

This is not a comprehensive list of all of the carry-on travel backpacks we have tested. We have removed any models that have been discontinued or that no longer meet our criteria.

The Away Outdoor Convertible Backpack 45L is a rare miss from the Away team. This bag is resoundingly average for the price. Although it’s made from excellent materials, the bag is let down by its overall design, which lacks any kind of structure or attention to comfort. There are better options.

The cheap, no-frills Cabin Max Metz bag is intriguing for the price. Any bag at this price should almost be considered disposable. That said, if you need a simple bag that costs less than a seat upgrade, this might be the way to go—unless you can pick up the eBags Motherlode bag for under $100, which we think is a better deal at that price.

The GeniusPack Travel Backpack is the only model we came across that tried to fit a suit into a travel backpack. Though some people might need that, we think those who have to travel with a suit (or clothes that require pressing) would be better off with a piece of carry-on luggage . GeniusPack now offers a second version of this bag, but our conclusion hasn’t changed.

For certain people, the GoRuck GR3 is almost worth the cost. It’s strong and simple and covered by an iron-clad repair guarantee. The removable hip belt is comfortable to wear, and it’s good at displacing the weight of a 45-liter backpack. This is a decent bag. After testing it, however, we weren’t thrilled with the internal Velcro lining for compatible Velcro packing cubes. Velcro isn’t great: It wears out, it’s difficult to keep clean, and it clings to dirt. That might seem like a small thing, but for the price, this bag should feel perfect.

The Minaal Carry-On 2.0 was designed to be a backpack for business people. But if you’re carrying it for business, you’re probably wearing at least a blazer, so you wouldn’t use a backpack in any case. If you’re a business traveler who falls more on the casual end of the business-casual spectrum, and you’re not on a budget, this is a well-thought-out pack. But we think our picks are more versatile for world travel, and they come at a better price. Minaal has since introduced a 3.0 version of this bag ; our thoughts about it remain the same.

The Osprey Sojourn Porter 46L is a slightly larger sibling of the Farpoint pack. The Sojourn Porter bag is about 2 inches longer, and it pushes right up to most airline limits. If you don’t mind possibly having to check your bag at the last minute, this would be an excellent alternative to the Farpoint pack.

What Is Smart Bags?

A travel bag is an important part of any air travel trip, but not all of them are created equal. Many bags are just plain old bags that are boring and uninteresting to look at.

“Batteries are not allowed on the plane”. Removable battery and non-removable battery are prohibited in carry-on baggage.

It is best to avoid suitcases with integrated batteries as they can damage sensitive airport equipment and injure baggage handlers.

Despite that, it depends on the airline and the battery. Some airlines allow batteries in checked bags, but a lot of them do not allow you to bring them in carry-on luggage at all.

Still, a big question for many is whether all of the bells and whistles smart bags offer are even worth it.

Why Smart Bags Can Be A Problem

If you're a tech-savvy traveler, taking a smart bag on your next trip may sound like a dream. As a result, many airlines have placed restrictions on the use of smart bags, with most requiring flyers to remove lithium-ion batteries in checked luggage.

The reasoning behind the removable battery requirement is that lithium-ion batteries are considered dangerous goods because they can overheat or short-circuit, especially when damaged, making them a fire hazard when stored in the cargo hold. If you're using your smart bag as your carry-on, many airlines will allow you to keep the battery plugged in during the flight. Since so much of what a smart bag can do depends on lithium-ion battery power, if you check your bag, you'll lose access to many of these features, including the ability to use GPS to keep tabs on your bag's whereabouts while it's away from you.

Is A Smart Bag Worth It?

Most travelers probably don't need a smart bag and would be better off spending their money on other gadgets to improve their traveling experience. When traveling, you most likely keep all of your valuables on your person or in your carry-on bag, making things like remote locks and GPS unnecessary.

You may be thinking, what if I need to check my bag? If you check your bag, your smart luggage could bring you peace of mind. Most of these bags have electronic, tamper-proof locks that the average criminal will find hard to crack. However, once you remove the lithium-ion battery to check your bag, it'll lose most of its smart capabilities and revert to being just like any other suitcase.

Smart bags are also costlier than regular luggage. Plus, you can buy other gadgets, like a power bank, to charge your devices while at the airport or on a flight. If tracking your luggage is important, you can use a Samsung SmartTag2 or Apple AirTag to track your checked bags while you travel. With these gadgets, you can come close to making your own DIY smart bag.

Staying connected while away from home is a priority travelers take seriously. It’s not just about charging your tablet to be entertained in flight. Like it or not, our devices have become our lifeline to the world, tasked with everything from tracking our whereabouts to holding our confirmation codes and boarding passes.

Getting stuck with a dead phone or laptop can derail any trip, especially when you’re depending on your phone for directions, checking in with work or family, or even getting a ride. It’s no wonder that smart luggage with USB charging.

Are “Smart” Suitcases the Same Thing as Luggage with USB Ports?

In 2018, US-based airlines banded together to ban smart luggage from travel in or on their airplanes due to concerns over the risk of exploding lithium ion batteries.

They did not ban the batteries themselves, and that’s a good thing, since most laptops and tablets are powered by these cells. Instead, the airlines took direct aim at luggage with integrated, non-removable batteries–often referred to as “smart luggage.”

This smart luggage travel ban put consumers–and some luggage companies–in a tailspin. Pricey smart bags with built-in USB chargers, location tracking, LED lights, and other “smart” features included were suddenly on the no-fly list–unless the power banks could be removed by the passenger prior to flight.

Regardless of whether it was carry-on luggage or being checked in, any bag with a built-in battery that was not removable was grounded. Meanwhile, luggage with features like USB charging ports connected to removable batteries were, and still are, approved by the FAA.

According to the FAA and the Transportation Security Authority (TSA), carry-on suitcases as well as checked baggage are cleared for takeoff, as long as passengers transport the battery pack with them in the airplane cabin during flight.

Today, power banks, backup battery packs and all other lithium-ion batteries continue to be expressly prohibited in the cargo area where luggage is held under the plane. Instead, passengers must remove any batteries from their checked luggage to be carried onboard with them in the cabin. Carry-on suitcases with chargers and removable battery packs are also good to go.

How Do Bags with USB Ports Work?

The term “USB Luggage” refers to luggage with USB ports built into the design of the bag.

Luggage with USB charging ports is super convenient and lets you charge your devices wherever you are without fumbling around for the battery pack.
