Live reviews

I have not see Ralph McTell perform live for nearly forty years, so it felt about time to see him again.

The Cambridge Corn Exchange is not the most attractive venue. Unlike its counterpart in King's Lynn, Cambridge retains too many features of its former function and these days I find being too far from the stage very unsatisfactory. This time was a significant improvement on my experience a week or so ago when, although in Row M, I was only five rows from the stage last evening.

The first hour was taken up with four songwriter/performer acts who may have been local. Two out of the four performances suffered from poor sound (the first young woman's vocals were awash to drowning point with reverb and the third seemed to have a complicated cable array that didn't work and his guitar was inaudible). The second, act, a duo were the most polished with one guitar often playing lead and they managed some pleasant vocal harmonies.

Ralph came on after an interval and proceeded to entertain in his disarmingly self-deprecating manner, although he was generously effusive in his praise of the first four acts. Mid-way through he introduced two songs at the piano by saying he "uses" the instrument rather than claiming to be able to "play" it. I think he undersold himself. His playing was perfectly competent enough to accompany the songs.

I was delighted to note that I knew very few of the songs and all bar the two piano numbers were beautifully delivered with his delicate guitar work and rich baritone. Between the songs he often had an entertaining story to tell about the origin of the next song and reflecting his many years as a performer. After so many years, Ralph McTell still has what it takes and there can't have been many in the subdued, mostly mature, audience who would likely have disagreed. Of course, his final song was "Streets of London" which I personally didn't need to hear again, but it was well received with applause during the intro - that very-known chord sequence. He was called back to perform two encores. The final song, as yet unrecorded but due for inclusion on the next album, shows that the writing skills are as strong as ever.

By an accident of geography Ralph McTell was born British. Had he been born American he would undoubtedly have become a huge star. Instead while he continues to fill halls like the Cambridge Corn Exchange, it seems poignant that one of his more memorable television appearances is as the accused author of "One Hundred Easy Tunes for Guitar" in Judge Dawn French's court that no one (including high profile witnesses David Gilmour, Mark Knopfler, Mark King, Gary Moore and Lemmy) can read. Given that degree of endorsement I think Ralph McTell probably qualifies as a British institution.

Ralph McTell is a truly legendary singer/songwriter from England who has been performing for almost 50 years. His style is the traditional folk and American blues. He's an exceptionally talented guitar player, though his aim in his music is not to show off his immense talent, even though his technique is truly world-class.

He plays a lot of blues style guitar and will play solos but the real draw of his music is his unbelievable singing ability and the emotion that comes out when he performs. His songs make you long for being at home and among friends. He'll sing about places he's been and places he'll be going again.

I had the pleasure of seeing him play in London a few years ago, and he told stories between all of his songs and really made the audience feel as if you were talking to an old friend and singing songs and just having a relaxing evening.

Ralph is a talented and experienced performer and knows how to relate to his listeners. I listen to his music at least once a month and am reminded of home. I love folk music and Ralph is one of the best playing and singing it. See this man perform, he is still playing in the UK these days.

I have seen Ralph on all of his Australian tours.

He is better live than on any recorded medium, apart from perhaps that magic recording of his 70th birthday concert.

All reviews should say, however I will repeat the following, he is a truly wonderful bloke, a master storyteller in word and song, is a master of the guitar, his penchant, in particular, being for the old ragtime blues tunes, his voice has a lovely rich, round timbre and he always gives his audience an evening that lingers long past the end of his performance.

And yes, I love the way that crowds join in singing The Streets of London.

A vastly underrated talent.

I plan to see him again in Melbourne at what may well be his final trip here.

A performance not to be missed by all those who simply enjoy fine music.

Robert Cudlipp.

We loved the show, it was more than we expected. Ralph McTell was intimate, funny and entertaining.

I love the fact that the show started at 7.30pm, and at 7.35pm Ralph walked onto the stage with no support acts, excellent.

Lovely warm and intimate evening. Ralf McTell has a font of experiences that he dipped into which enthralled the audience. His singing and guitar playing made the evening complete. Highly recommended!

From There to Here, Ralph McTell returns for an extended Irish tour

ralph mctell irish tour

RALPH McTell made his debut in 1968 with the album ‘Eight Frames a Second’ and in 1974 the release of ‘Streets of London’ earned him an Ivor Novello Award. In 2002 he was presented with the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards.

One of the great storytellers, Ralph is now celebrating more than 50 years on the road. Known for his virtuoso guitar style, he is primarily a prolific and gifted songwriter. With a style that invites you into a unique world, he weaves a narrative that is both significant and poignant.

While working on a building site in the early sixties, Ralph was inspired by an Irish gang on the site to write Clare to Here.

“I was only about 17 or 18. The craic relieved the stress of the hard work. I was working with an Irishman called Michael, as so many of them are. And I said to him, ‘It must be very strange to be here in London after the place you come from.’ And he responded by saying, ‘Yes, it’s a long way from Clare to here.’”

Ralph has been a lifelong friend of Ireland, its music, and its people. Next year sees the Streets of London composer celebrate his 80th birthday, and to mark his special year he is recording a new album with some of Ireland’s finest artists in a unique collaboration that affirms his connection with and love for the music and culture of Ireland.

Ralph says, “Over my writing career I have written and recorded a number of songs that reflect my affection for Ireland, and I wanted to celebrate that by inviting some of my Irish musician friends to take part in this special recording.”

When asked on KCLR96FM, when this new album will be complete and ready for a release date, Ralph gave a funny insight into the process of collaborative work in music here in Ireland.

“I’ll answer that with a slightly oblique response and that is … There is time. There is rock’n’roll time. There’s Irish time, and there’s Irish rock and roll time and it’s taking time.”

“I’m having this wonderful opportunity to work with Irish artists that I’ve always loved and admired. We’ll have to just wait until it’s ready. I would say probably next year.”

The new recording is called ‘From There to Here’. This evocation of Ireland will be released when it is good and ready. In the meantime, Ralph is touring Ireland this month coming to Lime Tree Theatre this Sunday October 29.

Trad: Ralph McTell's English heart and Irish soul

ralph mctell irish tour

PLUS ça change, plus ça reste la même chose, as they say in Paris. The more things change, the more they stay the same.

The phrase occurred to me as I was listening to the folk classic Streets of London before chatting to Ralph McTell, the song’s writer.

I almost choked on my Corn Flakes when I heard that the song was originally about Paris, where McTell was living at the time, but the master of storytelling produced a song that could be about any big city in the world - and, like all great pieces of art, is both specific and universal.

This writer worked in London in the early-1970s and sat amongst the people who drank in the cafes that 79-year-old McTell portrays. Today, cups of tea have been replaced by skinny lattes, but the aching loneliness and the poverty under the surface remain the same.

Poverty is something McTell is well aware of.

“I wrote Streets of London when I was living in Paris, busking and trying to earn a few coins and having a bit of fun at the same time, living the life of an itinerant street musician while hanging out with Vietnam War dodgers and drug-users and God knows what.

“Myself and a few pals had a couple of cinema queues that kind of looked after us, basically.

“We only made enough to just get by on and pay for a room, but the poor people in Paris were sleeping over the hot air vents of the Metro, and that was a bitter winter in 1965.

“And I started asking why no-one was taking any notice of these people.

“They used to sleep barefoot in the middle of bloody winter. At least we had that room in a really grotty little hotel to go to,” recalls McTell.

However, Ralph’s empathy with the poor goes back before Paris.

“We knew all about poverty, but we were rich in the sense that my mother had been put into service as a domestic. She had been looking after a little boy who was actually part of the Royal family and who later became the Marquis of Hertfordshire.

“My mother would read him stories which she then read to us, but I was always, always interested in people and why they said certain things or why they did certain things,” he says.

After being in the army for six months, the young McTell bought himself out and went to college, and it was here that he heard the music that was to change his life.

“I wanted to be a guitar player like all the kids at my age,” he recalls.

“At that time, there was skiffle, and rock and roll was out, but whenever I heard a guy called Ramblin' Jack Elliott - an acolyte of Woody Guthrie’s - I had found my muse.

“Quite simply, it was the combination of simple guitar music, the twang of the instrument itself, and then a man who had something to say, that was the voice I was looking for.

“I got really excited by this thing, the visions expressed by Woody, but also the kind of earthiness of the guitar.  I began to really work hard at playing the guitar and I soon got pushed into doing a guest spot at a folk club as a very nervous 18-year-old, but it was very organic. I didn't write anything for another three years or so.”

Betty Craig with singer-songwriter Ralph McTell, left, and comedian Billy Connolly

For such a strong-looking man, McTell admits to being quite emotional when it comes to music and song.

“The first time music made me cry was probably when I was about eight or nine, and we'd learned the song Barbara Allen about a boy who died for love, so I've always been that way.

“I tried to toughen up – and I am tough in other ways – but music and the beauty in music and words, they affect me deeply.

“That's the only spirituality I need. I don't need any religions or anything like that to guide me. Humanity is something that I care very much about.

“It's very difficult when you get to me my age and you see the state the world is in, it’s a massive step backwards over the last sort of 20 years, maybe more.

“We have an alleged democracy, and we voted for these b******s who just don't care. In the 1960s, I was writing about alienation but we were more compassionate back then. We’ve become brutalised by the divisions in our society.”

Another testament to McTell’s humanity is the song that has become part of the Irish folk canon, From Clare to Here, which is based on a real conversation McTell had while he was working on building sites with a group of Irish navvies.

“I’ve grown up with Irish people all my life,” he says.

“There were my Irish friends when I was a kid, I was with Irish boys in the army for the six months I was there, and there was a couple of Irish boys living with me in a squat near Bournemouth.

"So I've got an empathy with Ireland, not just for the terrible bloody history that we share as the two nations, but because of the way the arts are woven into everyday society through traditional music, your love of poetry, the sadness of leaving Ireland for emigration. I'm caught up in all that,” says Ralph.

The result is that the 79-year old is about to release a new album, From There to Here, 'an evocation of Ireland, its music and culture through the words and music of Ralph McTell, featuring performances by some of Ireland’s most celebrated actors and musicians'.

With the album still in production, Ralph is loathe to give much away about who will be performing, but he says he is “delighted to say that it looks like From Clare to Here is being covered by Declan O'Rourke, while Moya Brennan has already laid down the harp accompaniment to The Grey Sea Shore," a song Ralph wrote about the true story of a fishing accident off of the coast of Donegal back in the day, which he says “is more about the heroism and the transfer of affection from one of the brothers who drowned and the one who didn’t.”

“I also co-wrote a song with Phil Coulter, I Love the Ground, which was inspired by the great Barney McKenna from the Dubliners, and another song I recorded with John Sheehan about the Easter Rising called The GPO, so there is quite a mix of material on the album,” says Ralph.

Not only can we look forward to a new Ralph McTell album, but the troubadour from Croydon will be embarking on an Irish tour, with dates as follows:

  • October 26 – Watergate Theatre, Kilkenny
  • October 27 – Glór, Ennis
  • October 28 – Siamsa Tíre, Tralee

Your most famous song is Streets of London , did you ever expect it to take off in the way that it did?

Nearly 400 artists have recorded it. It has been translated into many languages and it’s used in school as a teaching aid and in churches. Most recently it was translated into Serbo-Croatian. The song has a career all on its own. I don’t own the song because just like a lot of young men and women at the time, we signed publishing deals which weren’t always to our best advantage. I’m getting on, I’m elderly and to think it’s played around the world is so humbling. The song has changed my life and people never seem tired of hearing it, which suits me. I still play it every time I go out and I’m not embarrassed by it. I know the sentiment is much the same and I know the affect it has because I still get letters from people who’ve heard it for the first time. It’s nearly 60 years old and it flew around the world by itself.

Six decades on, do you ever get sick of playing it?

I’m not blasé, it’s not like I have a string of hits. I accidentally had one hit and that’s it. It was around for four years before we recorded it and it went to number two in the British charts. It sold 90,000 copies in one day around Christmas time that year. The Irish audience identified with the hardness of being in London when they came over looking for work.

Do you make any money from it or has it been lost in the deals you’ve signed?

Not really. It made its money when it was a hit song. I still get cross over the deals that were done back in the day and because I was so naive, but I’m not the only one. I do get satisfaction over what the song has brought me and how it has changed my life. There are people out there who are far more musically talented than I will ever be, but I had the good fortune to write that song. To this day, I’m still driven to write in the same way I was driven back then. I don’t worry about hits or radio play, I write because I want to.

When you think back to busking in Paris, which is where you got your inspiration for the song, it was probably a time where English people weren’t travelling as much as they do now.

Firstly, I had just come to the end of a relationship I had been in since I was 17 and I was very depressed. I was working in a timber yard in south London and it was miserable November weather. My mate suggested going to Paris with our guitars and there was a romantic sense of going there instead of being in Croydon. A wonderful adventure unfolded and I met my wife and we’ve been together for 50 odd years now. I got to experience being a potless broke musician strumming away on the streets for five months. I came home and I had much improved as a guitar player, as well as having lost some inhibitions. I’ve always had that empathy for people, which has been a burden at times because I care about things, but that helps as a writer. When you have a sense of caring about what other people are going through, your songs will resonate more with people and that’s what my audience likes. I always aim to hit the soul. After leaving Paris I got invited by Wizz Jones, who is a legend in England, to perform at the summer sessions. It was there I got discovered and I signed a contract with a record label. The rest, as they say, is history.

Ralph McTell

Are you excited to take to the stage in Ireland?

I’m really excited. I’ve toured in Ireland in lots of ways, but this is my first concert tour. We’ve been working on it for quite some time and we’ll be hitting north, south, east and west.

Visiting artists always say the Irish audience is unique.

The enthusiasm is brilliant and people always speak to you like you’re an old friend. They’re very familiar with the songs, so I’m always charmed and delighted to be in Ireland. In fact, I nearly always need a holiday when I get back home afterwards. I was talking to [comedian] Billy Connolly, who is a big friend of mine, and he said that whenever Irish dates would appear on an artist’s calendar, even way back in the 30s or 40s, the audience used to be so joyous. I remember the greeting Laurel and Hardy got, they rang the bells out when they got to Cobh. Stan and Ollie couldn’t believe that people had rowed out in their boats to meet them. Music is a huge part of Irish culture and for people like me it’s like coming home when we play here. I love the intimacy of being on stage and people have been kind enough to say that it feels like I’m just singing to them.

Do you feel like an adopted Irish man?

I would see it as a huge honour to be thought of as that. I’ve a disproportionate amount of songs that connect me with Ireland and Irish culture. A number of Irish artists have recorded my songs.

You’ll be playing in Ennis, and you also wrote From Clare to Here . What was the inspiration behind that song?

It’s a lovely story. I was working on a building site in 1962 earning about 12 pounds a week and there was an Irish gang on the site. It was a tricky job, the soil was heavy clay. I was only 18 at the time and one of the lads was clearly not an adult, he was about 15 or 16. His name was Michael and we teamed up. He was a strong lad, but he was very shy. I paused to roll a cigarette and I said to him, “It must be very hard for you Michael, living over here in London.” He stopped and said: “It’s a long way from Clare to here.” That phrase stuck in my head and years went by and I started to think about migrant labour. I had never been to Clare when I wrote the song, but I knew it was facing the Atlantic. The white horses image came to me as did the sound of traditional music, which by that time I was quite familiar with.

Did you ever see him again?

What happened to Michael I will never know. I hope he’s alive and well.

You’ve been married for over 50 years, what’s your secret to a long and happy marriage?

Compromise and tolerance when dealing with demons, and because we’re opposites it has worked very well. People can be so similar, they can almost be like siblings. Opposites attract and there needs to be give and take. We’ve made it this far, so it’s pretty good going. We’ve four wonderful kids and 11 grandchildren. My wife is not in the best of health now.

Singer Ralph McTell performing, March 1976

For you, what’s the biggest difference between being a father and a grandfather?

It’s great being a Grandpa. They don’t need me anymore, but we had lots of fun over the years. I used to read stories with imaginary characters and they all believed we had a dragon that used to live at the top of the garden. I had a pretty idyllic childhood, but also poverty stricken. My childhood was rich with imagination and I try to protect the innocence of the little ones for as long as possible. I want to be remembered as a good Dad and grandfather more than anything else.

From There to Here will tour Ireland from the 26th of October to the 11th of November 2023, offering a rare opportunity to see Ralph perform these songs in 13 cities and towns across Ireland. Tickets are on sale at ralphmctell.co.uk/home/tour/
