Trea Turner imposter scams 70-year-old Phillies fan suffering from Parkinson's disease out of $50,000

The woman believed she was speaking to turner on social media.

gettyimages-1719481705-2-2.jpg

One Pennsylvania woman has been scammed out of $50,000 by someone she believed was Philadelphia Phillies shortstop Trea Turner . The 70-year-old Phillies fan thought she was speaking directly to Turner through social media, and by the time she found out it was an imposter, it was too late.

The woman, who suffers from Parkinson's disease, told FOX 29 Philadelphia  the conversations began when she defended Turner from social media criticism. Someone on Facebook posing as Turner then asked to Google Chat with her.

While the woman doubted she was actually speaking to Turner, the conversations became more convincing. The faux Turner began incorporating details about his family and personal life into the chats.

After weeks, the 70-year-old fan gave in and started to believe it was actually the Phillies' shortstop on the other end of the online chat.

"He was relentless, but he's convincing, he's repeating things that I knew Trea Turner did on the ballfield," she explained to FOX 29. "He kept harping on it for about three weeks so finally I said, 'Alright, what do you want?'"

That's when the financial scam really started to unfold. The fake Turner said he and his wife hadn't been getting along, and he wanted to hide properties from her. The imposter requested that the woman send large amounts of money to different accounts.

Roughly $50,000 later, the woman realized it was a trick and went to law enforcement.

"I was gullible, I believed him," she said. "I should've known better but, I just, I overlooked it."

The Towamencin Township Police are investigating the crime, but they believe the Turner imposter may be located outside the United States. Lt. Geoffrey Wainwright advises others to be wary of any strangers asking for money on social media.

NBA confirms key illegal screen call on Pacers' Myles Turner

The Pacers turn over the ball late in the fourth quarter after Myles Turner is called for a moving screen. (0:17)

travel turner.com

NEW YORK -- Indiana Pacers center Myles Turner was correctly called for an illegal screen in the closing seconds of the New York Knicks ' controversial 121-117 victory in Game 1, according to the NBA's Last Two Minute Report released Tuesday evening.

With about 15 seconds left and Indiana down 118-117, Pacers guard Tyrese Haliburton dribbled up the floor as Turner set a high screen on New York's Donte DiVincenzo , sending him to the ground. Turner got called for an offensive foul instantly, which prompted the Pacers to challenge the call.

The Pacers were unsuccessful with the challenge, and the league's report stood by that ruling Tuesday.

Still, there were a total of four missed calls in the final two minutes, according to the league's report: Turner should have been whistled for a separate illegal screen on DiVincenzo in the backcourt with about 10 seconds remaining; there was an errant kicked ball violation called on Aaron Nesmith with 53 seconds left; and prior to those, officials missed calling a defensive three seconds violation on Turner with 1:19 left.

After the Game 1 defeat, Turner said, "In my experience in this league, I think it's best when the players decide the outcome of the game," while adding that he looked forward to the release of the Last Two Minute Report.

Following the call on Turner, the Knicks sank three free throws to put the game away. Moments before the call, DiVincenzo put the Knicks up 118-115 with a 28-foot 3-pointer that came on the heels of the critical kicked ball violation whistled against Nesmith -- one that likely would have resulted in an Indiana fast break if not for the errant call.

Crew chief Zach Zarba acknowledged after the game that the kicked ball shouldn't have been called. "Postgame review did show that it hit the defender's hand, which would be legal," he told pool reporter Fred Katz of The Athletic.

The Knicks and the Pacers are set to square off for Game 2 of the Eastern Conference semifinals at Madison Square Garden on Wednesday night.

Flat Vernacular’s Payton Turner Approaches Wallpaper Designs Like a Narrative

The artist shares her favorite products for creating—and setting—a scene.

"My love affair with wallpaper has been pretty much lifelong, starting back to when I was a child in my grandparents’ summer home in West Hampton Beach," says Payton Turner, cofounder of the wallpaper and fabric brand Flat Vernacular . The "kooky print of a huge science lab with all these beakers bubbling" in the kids’ bathroom, as Turner remembers it, might have felt like a scene from a children’s book unfolding right from the walls. "Wallpaper does a beautiful job of really setting the scene so easily," she says.

Wallpaper eventually became an integral part of Turner’s thesis at MICA, where she studied fine art and painting. In 2010, she launched Flat Vernacular with her husband, Brian Kaspr, a fellow art school graduate whom she met in Baltimore, after they noticed a gap in the market for artistic wall coverings. Now, 14 years later, "wallpaper feels very much back in style," she says of the interest surrounding DIY home improvement projects. The duo initially started the company by silk-screening each wallpaper by hand but quickly realized it was too time-consuming and ultimately, an unrealistic process. (All of their designs are now digitally printed.)

"It’s a beautiful, artisanal process and it requires a ton of human touch and finesse, even when using machines," she says of collaborating with Kaspr. Their designs can come from any number of art explorations, whether it’s from a painting, collage, sculpture, or photograph. "We try our best to make thoughtful decisions and make things that don't already exist in the market," she says, adding that the process for installing wallpaper hasn’t changed much over the years but that the actual materials, including the science behind primers, have significantly advanced. "It’s a much better product than it used to be in the ’70s, ’80s, and ’90s," she says, mentioning that removing and switching out wallpaper isn’t as an arduous process as long as it’s been primed correctly. (Turner tends to redo her walls whenever the mood strikes since, as she declares, "I don’t ever want to paint a room again, honestly.")

As suspected, Turner and Kaspr’s home in Norwalk, CT where they live with their four-year-old son is covered in wallpaper, in "as many places as possible, although it’s really hard to choose when you make your own products," she says. Their midcentury modern house, built in 1954, already comes with a storied past—it once served as a guest house to the film and Broadway star Mary Martin, who played the titular role of Peter Pan in the 1960 film—but the swathes of wallpaper within have further made their home feel more "well lived-in," she says. "Each room definitely has a personality." It’s fitting that Turner’s penchant for wallpaper designs that tell a story goes hand-in-hand with her love of books—she’s also cofounder of the literary-minded site and community Girls at Library, with Eliza Wexelman, that will soon be relaunched. "Books take up the majority of the space in my house and I have bookshelves in almost every room except for the bathrooms," she says. "I think of wallpaper as a form of narrative."

Check out Taylor’s picks:

Old holland oil color, old holland oil color - vermillion.

"Vermilion is my favorite red hue. I’ve been working on a series of figurative oil paintings for about a year and a half after taking a long break, and this is a handy color to have on my palette. It makes for an interesting underpainting tone and works well within different shades of skin colors. It feels modern but not exactly contemporary, at least not in the context of how I’m currently setting up my palette. Which is exactly what I want!"

Fabriano Studio Watercolor Pads

Fabriano studio watercolor paper sheets.

"Though I’m mostly working with oil paint now, this paper is still my favorite for all my design work for Flat Vernacular and other freelance projects. It holds watercolor, gouache, and ink very well and it scans beautifully. The smaller sizes are nice to tote around, whether to and from my studio to home or to bring with me on trips."

Zecchi 12 Watercolour Travel Set

Votary night star serum.

"I think this is the most magical overnight cream I have ever experienced. My skin seems to love it. If my combination skin has no complaints, my brain has no complaints. I look less exhausted, my skin tone is more even, and I feel properly moisturized even in the driest months of Connecticut winters."

In Sunlight or In Shadow: Stories Inspired by the Paintings of Edward Hopper

"My friend Roxanne gave me this book for my birthday as I'm an avid fan of Edward Hopper's paintings. Are you interested in the internal landscapes of American loneliness? Me too. Read this book."

Sophie Lou Jacobsen Fazzo Table Lamp

Sophie lou jacobsen x in common with fazzo lamp.

"I adore this lamp for its shape, gesture, and presence."

Flat Vernacular Bea - Regent’s Park Wallpaper

"This is one of my all time favorite Flat Vernacular patterns and colorways. I love this palette in particular. The color combination makes this microfloral pattern feel austere, subtle, and moody. I put distinct and often uncommon (not necessarily ‘bold’ per se) color combinations in my own home, and I highly recommend this pattern and colorway for dining rooms, libraries, and bedrooms."

Meals Blueberry Work Shirt

"Between the durable and breathable fabric as well as the generous cut of this shirt, you can’t go wrong if you want something easy to wear and easy to move around in. My daily life requires significant physical movement and I prefer loose, comfortable cuts. This shirt is now part of my daily uniform."

Room & Board Woodwind Console Bookcase

"This is my basic bookshelf but I really love it. I think it suits a lot of different decor and schemes since I like to rearrange and change things around a lot."

Burberry and Daniel Lee Hosted a Very “British” 2024 Met Gala After-Party with Naomi Campbell, Jodie Turner-Smith, and More

The first Monday in May is home to one of the most renowned red carpets in the world but the after-parties don’t fall short of turning the streets of New York City into a runway. And there is no one better to open a show (or after-party!) than supermodel Naomi Campbell.

Donning a Burberry turquoise fringe gown on this year’s enchanted forest-inspired red carpet, Campbell is a veteran Met Gala attendee. From her feathery Valentino gown in 2019 to last year’s molten pink Chanel by Karl Lagerfeld number pulled straight from the spring 2010 archives, Campbell is never shy to serve up a head-turning look.

Joined by co-hosts actress Jodie Turner-Smith, creative director of Burberry Daniel Lee, and Vogue’s Chioma Nnadi, the evening was dedicated to celebrating the future of fashion with an exceptionally British twist. Of course, the scene at The Mark’s Caviar Kaspia followed suit drawing a crowd of elite guests and friends from designers like Marc Jacobs and Victor Glemaud to style swans like Chloë Sevigny and Awkwafina, the evening drew a notable crowd.

In true Caviar Kaspia form, baked potatoes adorned with a lavish portion of caviar circulated the room with french fries and slices of truffle pizza. There was no shortage of delicious ways to indulge in the next chapter of the evening. Arriving in style, co-host Turner-Smith swapped her angelic Burberry tulle dress embroidered with silk organza feather flowers and over 150,000 faux pearls for a chic, club-approved two-piece set.

Spinning a mix of classic hits that got everyone on their feet, DJ Mahogany stole the spotlight in a stylish Burberry checked outfit. Even Grammy award-winning artist Sam Smith and his partner, designer Christian Cowan, were caught having a laugh and sharing a kiss on the dance floor well past midnight.

Jodie Turner-Smith Says Her 2024 Met Gala Dress Represented ‘a Clean Start’ Following Split from Joshua Jackson

“White, representing a rebirth..." the actress wrote on Instagram of the custom Burberry gown

Jodie Turner-Smith is opening up about the inspiration behind her “bridal” Met Gala look.

The Anne Boleyn star — who wore a custom white Burberry tulle dress, which had been hand-embroidered with ivory silk organza feather flowers — noted that the outfit had heavy symbolism for her newfound single life amid her divorce from Joshua Jackson .

“This met gala was a very special one for me… my first stepping out on my own,” Turner-Smith, 37, wrote on Instagram , while alluding to the first time she attended the Met Gala in 2022 with Jackson, 45. For that event, she wore a custom Gucci fringed beaded bodysuit with long pleated train.

The actress went on to say that she had “many thoughts” after reading the short story called the “Garden of Time” that this year's Met Gala theme “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion” was based on, and mainly took away the “desire to represent both the power of nature and the delicacy of it.”

“In nature, death is both an ending *and* a beginning. when you prune away that which is dead, new buds are free to grow. fitting, then, that the dress #DanielLee designed for me, full of english flowers, was deliberately bridal,” Turner-Smith shared.

“White, representing a rebirth. a clean start. a recommitment to the most important relationship i will ever have, the relationship from which all others grow: my relationship with myself,” she continued, while adding that “through loving and honouring myself,” she is “able to love and honour” her daughter Juno , 3, and “teach her to do the same.”

“I am ever changing, ever growing, always beginning… and FREE, to love better, stronger, more fiercely and fearlessly than i ever have 💞,” she concluded. “THANK YOU ENDLESSLY, @burberry, for your support and your creativity and your love. can’t wait to see what’s next…!!!!!”

Alongside the words, she shared several photos of her look, including snaps of her dress from different angles on the Met Gala carpet. The photos showed off her white-blonde hair for the night and bold accessories, including a Chopard cross necklace and blue rose that she held in her hand.

She also shared some behind the scenes pictures of her glam squad getting her ready, having fun with friends and sitting down for dinner inside the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

The Independent star filed for divorce from Jackson in October 2023 after four years of marriage. She opened up about the end of the marriage in an interview with U.K. newspaper The Times four months later, saying that she had a positive mindset about the split.

"Sometimes things we really want to work just don’t end up working,” she told the outlet. “And that’s OK. The most important thing is that you choose what’s healthiest for you and your family and definitely your children."

Turner-Smith continued, "I don’t think it’s a failure. We obviously had such a beautiful moment together. And now it’s time for a new moment for both of us. And how exciting!"
