Port Qaqortoq cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Qaqortoq, Greenland. Qaqortoq is a port town located near Cape Thorvaldsen (southern Greenland) with population around 3,000. This is south Greenland's most populous town and country's 4th-largest - after Nuuk , Sisimiut , and Ilulissat . The main cruise ship tourist attraction here is  Hvalsey ("Whale Island") - Greenland's largest and best-preserved Norse ruins site "Eystribyggd". It is located only 18 km (11 mi) northeast of Qaqortoq. Hvalsey Fjord Church is a 14th-century Catholic church house designed similarly to Norway-found structures. The church is exceptionally well constructed from carefully chosen stones - some with weight 5+ tons.

Tourism is an important contributor to the economy of Qaqortoq. Greenland Sagalands, the Qaqortoq Tourist Service, is the tourist office. 65.5% of all tourists are from Denmark. Several facilities offer accommodations, including Qaqortoq Hostel. Qaqortoq Museum offers services in Danish, Kalaallisut and English. The Great Greenland Furhouse is a popular tourist attraction. Vacationers are offered year-round activities like kayaking, guided hiking, cross-country skiing, boating and whale-watching. In recent years, the town of Qaqortoq has experienced a fall in tourist revenue, very much because of the lack of an airport. The Danish Crown Princely family visited Qaqortoq as part of an official Greenland tour in summer 2014.

Royal Arctic Line in Nuuk is the port authority for Qaqortoq. With a channel depth of 15 m (50 feet), the port can accommodate ships up to 150 m (500 feet) in length. The port provides pilotage upon request (no tugging). Qaqortoq is a ferry port for Arctic Umiaq Line (freight and passenger shipping company). Arctic Umiaq serves the south-western Greenland route roundtrip from Nuuk .

Qaqortoq: tourist information

Qaqortoq, sitting at the tip of the peninsula in the south of Greenland, is a clean pleasant harbor town built on the site of Hans Egede's search for the lost colonists. Although only boasting 3500 people, it's considered to be the hub of the south and is worth visiting in summer when the place explodes with wildflowers. The town's pride of possession is the town square fountain - the only one in Greenland - with the names of the town burghers, past and present, in brass letters on the base (although many names have fallen victim to souvenir hunters). Qaqortoq museum is worth a gander - it's one of Greenland's finest - and exhibits artifacts from past and present cultures. Mostly, though, Qaqortoq is used as a base for hiking treks: either one day hikes up 'Peter's Cairn’ or around the edge of the Tasersuaq Lake, or as a departure point for the three- to four-day treks to the neighboring town of Igaliku. The Hvalsey ruins, sitting on a coastal strip just out of Qaqortoq, are the most extensive and best preserved Norse ruins in Greenland. There is a choice of ferry services on most days of the week, and several daily flights to other settlements along the west coast. It's also possible to trek from some of the neighboring towns. Qaqortoq is 450km (279mi) down the coast from Nuuk, although the distance by foot would be much greater given the heavily fringed coastline.

Qaqortoq is one of the most beautiful and festive cities in Greenland and a center for artisans and festivals. In the summer there is the flower festival, where lush and colorful flowers surround the sparkling icebergs. Every year artists and musicians gather for Qaqortoq National Day, and in 1993 local artist, Aka Høegh, started "Stone and Man," where artists carve sculptures in boulders around town.

Qaqortoq is surrounded by icebergs all year around. Every year in spring the drift ice from the east coast comes down to the southwest coast, with them comes the animals too. So, the ice was very important for the Inuits survival. Meet the local guide who grew up in the town that always have icebergs, the guide will tell you more about the importance of the ice right underneath the beautiful mountains of Qaqortoq.

Not only can you enjoy the view of the icebergs, you can also touch one as soon as the local and the skilled captain finds an iceberg that is safe to get very close to. The guide will provide a beverage with thousands of years old ice from the icecap. Remember to keep watch for whales and seals on the tour, you might see one. The captain and the guide will also be on a look out as well.

Cancellation terms

• Meet and Greet: We meet at the tender pier in Qaqortoq. There,  your captain and guide welcomes you aboard for a brief overview and safety demonstration.
• Iceberg tour: Sail around Qaqortoq, marveling at the stunning ice formations. Learn about iceberg formation and capture breathtaking photos.
• Wildlife Spotting: Keep an eye out for local wildlife such as seals and possibly whales, as your guide shares insights into their ecosystems.
• Return: We conclude with a serene cruise back to the tender pier, reflecting on the unforgettable sights.
• Disembarkation: Back at the tender pier, our crew assists you off the boat, marking the end of your remarkable iceberg experience.

Our cancellation fees are as follows:

• Cancellation fee of 30% is charged if cancelled 1 day or less before the event
• Cancellation fee of 20% is charged if cancelled 3 days or less before the event
• Cancellation fee of 15% is charged if cancelled 7 days or less before the event
• Cancellation fee of 10% is charged if cancelled 30 days or less before the event

Note: The cancellation fee also applies if the ship cancels the port call.

Get up close and personal with the quaint town of Qaqortoq, the most populous town in South Greenland, with about 3,500 people, on a guided 1.5-hour walking tour. Easily walkable, most roads lead to hilltops with stunning views of the fjord below. The focal point is the town square and its lovely fountain, which depicts whales spouting water out of their blowholes and is considered the oldest fountain in the country. The town square is surrounded by well-preserved colonial-era buildings dating back to when the town was founded in 1755. Fishing and canning are the main industries in Qaqortoq and date back to the days when Danish trader Anders Olsen established a seal-trading center on behalf of the Royal Greenland Trading Company. In the summer, Qaqortoq serves as a base for hiking treks throughout the region. The walk is relaxed and scenic, so bring your camera, dress in layers and be sure to have mosquito repellent and netting.

The tour will consist of a self guided walking tour , which you can do before and / or after boat trip and Hvasley Island, a  one hour return trip Boat tour to Hvasley , and 1 to 1.5 hour Hvalsey Island tour .

The walking tour will be at your own pace. Each person will receive an 8 ½ x 11  town map, to be kept as a souvenir . The map will clearly mark places in Qaqortoq  so that you can visit all local points of interest.   Descriptions of several will be provided on the back of the map. (Maps will be picked up from my room on the ship prior to arrival in Qaqortoq)

The walking tour can be completed prior to or after the boat and Hvasley tour. You can complete the walking part of this tour in parts if you want, some before boat, some after boat, some later, it is not all people in a group at once, rather your own time as you wish.

One of the 32 points of interest in Qaqortoq is Stone and Man.   All throughout the town, carved into boulders and lichen-covered rock faces, are carvings of whales, faces, and other traditional designs. Together these stoneworks are a citywide work of art known as Stone & Man.  There are 24 in all, and we will venture to find all 24. (More details on the back of your map!)

The boat ride will depart from Qaqortoq Harbour going to Hvasley, an amazing tour for those who want to experience the landscapes of Greenland, and the interesting history of the Norse Vikings.

We will board high performance ice-classified targa boats, outfitted with lifejackets and safety rafts for all.  Boats are covered and have washroom facilities.

We begin a half hour journey to Hvasley , sailing past the large island of Arpatsivik , the Norse “Hvalsey” or Whale Island, and into the fjord with the ancient Norse name “Hvalseyfjördur . On our way to Hvalsey by boat, it is possible to see an abundance of whales and seabirds frolicking in the fjord. Greenland prides itself on having only free and wild animals in its waters, so Greenland’s whales are free to swim wherever the schools of fish lead them. 

 We will be exploring the area where the Vikings, led by Eric The Red,   settled when coming to Greenland in the year 985 .

We also explore the history and story about the Vikings . The story about what Norse life was like here during their 500 years in the Middle Ages. Why did the Norse disappear? What was the last written evidence of these fascinating people?

Long before Columbus ever had the idea of sailing west to try to find a shorter route to India,  the Norse settlers from Scandinavia had established themselves in Greenland.

 A guide will tell the history of the Norse people, and there will be time to walk around and enjoy the place.  “Hvalsey” is a well-preserved ruins of one of the first Christian churches on the North American continent.

A 600-700 year old church ruin , standing in a quiet and peaceful setting. Sheep graze close by,  and birds fly overhead, other than this, the silence is almost deafening. Today nothing is left of the churchyard that surrounded the church, although the stone wall that enclosed the churchyard can still be made out in the terrain. When you walk into the very well preserved church ruins, you can clearly feel the presence of history. ”. It’s almost as if the Norse settlers had only just left the building.

Of course, the wooden roof and the interior are no longer present, but otherwise the church  appears very much as it did when it was abandoned in the 15th century, with stone walls  towering up to a height of 5-6 metres. (16.5 –19.5ft)

After approx. one hour on the island, we will enjoy another half hour boat tour through the Hvalseyfjordur fjord and back to Qatortoq Harbour. 

Those who have not completed the walking tour will have plenty of time to do so at their own leisure.

IMPORTANT We will be following a schedule re boats to and from Hvalsey. Each passenger with members of their group will be given a boat number, and boat departure time.  You will also be given a time to depart Hvalsey.

It is important you arrive 10 mins prior to your time . Boats will be going back and forth from the Harbour to Hvalsey all day so that we can accommodate everyone. You MUST have your ticket to board the boat, (which will be emailed to you prior to sailing) as we have secured all available boats for the day, and there will be room only for those on the tour. Sticking to a schedule for the boat portion is very important. 

ACCESSIBILITY : The boat to Hvasley is not recommended - boats are small and Hvalsey Island has rough terrain.

Teenager leaves family behind on island after they miss cruise departure

A teenager has been questioning whether or not they made the right decision to abandon their family on vacation.

In a recent Reddit post shared to the popular “Am I The A**hole?” subreddit , the teen explained that for a combination of an 18th birthday present and a high school graduation present, their parents got them a cruise, which became a family vacation.

Normally, the family only goes to “all inclusive” resorts and were warned ahead of time that cruises run with a strict schedule that needs to be followed.

“Well it was a week-long cruise and they would not head back to the ship when I said it was time to go. They were busy shopping and bargaining with the locals. I finally said that I was heading back to the ship. My mom waved me off,” the teen wrote in their Reddit post.

Their parents ended up missing the ship’s departure by 45 minutes and reached out to the Reddit poster to question why they didn’t stop the boat from leaving without them.

“I wanted to scream that they were not going to inconvenience 3,998 people because two could not understand what a schedule was,” the teen continued. “They ended up having to fly to the next port from there and it was expensive. They are pissed at me for leaving them behind.”

“I don’t know what I was supposed to do. They literally told me that they knew what they were doing. I wish I had never asked for this. They are making me miserable because I left without them.”

After posting, many people were quick to turn to the comments section to agree with the teenager’s opinion and general frustration with their parents, pointing out that the two adults should have been capable of getting back to the ship on time.

“They seriously think the ship will delay for 45 minutes, yeah no,” one comment began. “The docks and ship have a schedule to keep. They are adults and need to be responsible for getting back on time. Which is something you have figured out in less than six months of being an adult. At least you don’t have to go on any more vacations with them after this.”

“Your parents are in the wrong,” another commenter agreed. “I don’t do cruises but I have some experience with them because I travel to a place where cruise ships are common. I also thought passengers were warned that the ship leaves no matter who is on board.”

“You would never have been able to prevent the cruise ship from leaving. They have a schedule and they keep to it. The ship waits for no one. This is ALL on your parents.. They didn’t respect the ship schedule.”

A third commenter even pointed out that they weren’t sure what the teenager could have done to stop the ship from leaving given how the schedule is typically emphasized prior to the cruise itself.

“What precisely do they think you could have done? Kidnapped the captain? Staged your own drowning? You didn’t abandon them, they abandoned you, don’t let them weasel word this around to being your fault in any way, shape or form!” the comment read.

“I’m really sorry your parents have ruined this for you. It’s pretty pathetic of them to blame you for their extremely easy to avoid deliberate bad decision. They owe you at least two apologies, one for ignoring your sage advice in the first place, the second for behaving like spoiled four year olds.”

2024 NBA playoffs bracket, schedule, scores: Celtics look to build on NBA Finals lead vs. Mavericks in Game 2

The Boston Celtics made a huge statement in Game 1 of the 2024 NBA Finals and will look to build on their series lead when they host the Dallas Mavericks at TD Garden on Sunday night. Game 2 of this best-of-seven series will tip at 8 p.m. ET. 

The Celtics, seeking their first championship since 2008, had six players score in double figures on Thursday. Jaylen Brown scored 22 points, Kristaps Porzingis made an immediate impact off the bench and added 20 as Boston flexed its muscles against Dallas in a 107-89 win  to open the series.

Dallas cut the deficit to eight points in the third quarter, but Boston answered with a 14-0 run to quickly pull away again. Luka Doncic led Dallas with 30 points, while P.J. Washington added 14 points and eight rebounds. Kyrie Irving , a former Celtic, scored just 12 points on 6-for-19 shooting, including 0-of-5 from 3-point range. More importantly, Irving has now lost 11 consecutive games  against his former team.

The Celtics are looking for their first NBA title since 2008. Meanwhile, the Mavericks are taking aim at their second title in franchise history and their first since 2011. Regardless of which of the three remaining teams wins the 2024 title, the NBA will have its sixth different champion in six years -- something that has not happened since 1975-1980 .

The postseason field started with 20 teams, and now we're down to two. The Warriors , Kings , Hawks and Bulls were ousted in the Play-In Tournament before the Pelicans , Suns , Clippers , Lakers , Heat , 76ers , Bucks and Magic were eliminated in the first round. The Cavaliers , Thunder , Knicks and Nuggets were sent home in the second round with the Pacers and Timberwolves bowing out in the conference finals.
