What people love about wine tasting tours in italy.

The food and guides were great! Hotels were very comfortable. Drivers were excellent!
Massimo of Sicily Activities was wonderful to work with. He always answered right away, and took care of EVERYTHING throughout the trip--even things that weren't strictly part of the tour. We were a private group of 15. PALERMO: The hotel was wonderful and Fabrizio was a great guide for the food tour. Luca was a great driver to Monreale and Cefalu'. Larisa was a good guide for the Monreale cathedral and Lisabeta in Cefalu' was fantastic--and the restaurant was, too. Claudio, our driver to Agrigento and Siracusa was excellent. The guide at Valley of the Temples was good. An amazing place. SIRACUSA: The hotel was lovely and in a great location. Both guides in Ortigia were great--Valerio for the walking tour and Paolo for the foodie dinner--what a fun man. Paolo, the driver to Noto, Villa Romana del Casale and Taormina was fantastic. Saro was an excellent guide in Noto and Mt Etna. Lunches in both Noto and Piazza Amerina were delicious. Patrizia, the guide for Villa Romana, was wonderful, especially when we needed an ambulance for one of the women to go to the hospital. And dear Massimo even arranged a taxi for me from the hospital back to Siracusa (about an hour and half away). The driver was the nicest man! TAORMINA: Another very nice hotel. Our guide for the walking tour was really good. She was patient as we were a little late getting ready to start the tour, but she still took us to the Greek Theatre in the rain and wind. The tour to Mt Etna was fabulous--both the tasting and the lunch. Massimo even arranged a pizza-making class when weather prevented us from going on our scheduled boat ride. In summary, there was nothing Massimo could have done better. And this is at a time when all the tour directors were overwhelmed with bookings. He was a standout!
Amazing time, amazing people, amazing places. I would highly recommend this tour. The tour guide was exceptional and everything was so gorgeous. It's a great way to see such a grand area in a short time without missing anything.

As you plan your trip to Italy, taking into account various logistical factors will help ensure a memorable experience tailored to your personal preferences. Here are some key aspects to consider when organizing your Italian adventure.

Determine your all-inclusive budget for your Italian getaway, as it will significantly impact the duration and level of luxury of your accommodations.

Choosing the right lodging is essential and deeply personal. At Winetraveler, we lean towards vineyard resorts and lavish settings. However, Italy offers a wide array of budget-friendly boutique accommodations, particularly in smaller villages. Focus on your desired hotel experience and the location, and avoid overloading your trip. Pick 2 or 3 must-see destinations, staying a few days in each. For those craving more, consider day trips or driving to additional towns and cities.

Transportation

Renting a car is the most convenient way to explore Italy’s nooks and crannies. Keep in mind the importance of pacing yourself, especially during winery visits. It’s wise to book rental cars well in advance . Alternatively, Italy’s public transportation system is efficient, with trains and buses connecting cities and rural areas.

Trenitalia and Italo offer train services throughout Italy.

In larger cities such as Rome and Milan, you can rely on Uber, taxis, and electric scooters for transportation.

Travel Style

Reflect on your travel priorities: a laid-back, culinary-focused experience, a romantic retreat, a family vacation, or an active adventure. This will help you determine whether a single hotel as a home base or multiple locations suit your needs best.

Generally, a leisurely pace is ideal for an Italian vacation. Locals in both urban and rural settings relish in the enjoyment of food, wine, and ambiance. For those traveling from the United States, a 2 to 3-week trip allows ample time to explore and relax. If you’re pressed for time, you can still create a fulfilling itinerary by selecting highlights from our suggestions.

Additional Considerations

Familiarize yourself with local customs, tipping etiquette, and language basics for a smoother experience. It’s important to remember that Italy has a diverse regional culture, so it’s beneficial to research your destinations in advance. Lastly, consider purchasing travel insurance for peace of mind during your Italian journey.

What To Keep in Mind When Choosing a Winery Tour in Tuscany

Tuscany offers quite the mosaic of wine experiences, with each region presenting its signature varietals and winemaking traditions.

Whether you’re drawn to the robust Brunello di Montalcino, the classic Chianti, the noble Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, or the emerging Bolgheri wines, there are several key considerations to keep in mind that can help ensure your wine tour is both memorable and enlightening.

Understanding Regional Wine Profiles

  • Brunello di Montalcino : Esteemed for its full-bodied, bold flavours with notes of dark cherry and leather, originating from the vineyards around the picturesque town of Montalcino.
  • Chianti : Known for its Sangiovese-based wines, offering robust flavours, high acidity, and a tannic nature, embodying the ‘heart’ of Tuscany.
  • Siena and Montepulciano : These areas offer a spectrum of experiences, from the structured elegance of Vino Nobile to more approachable Rosso di Montepulciano wines, characterised by their fruitier and softer profiles.
  • Bolgheri : A newer region on the Tuscan wine map, gaining recognition for its high-quality Bordeaux-style blends, showcasing the versatility of the Tuscan terroir.

Tour Origin Points and Transportation

  • Consider starting your tour from urban centres like Florence or Siena for convenience, especially if you prefer not to drive. Note that tours from Florence to regions like Montalcino require a full-day commitment due to the distance.
  • Most of the tours that start in cities will also include transport; and for pretty much any tour that includes a multiple number of wineries the same can be said.
  • Tours to individual wineries, you will likely need to find your own transport to and from.

Exclusivity and Group Size

  • Tours vary from intimate, small-group settings offering a personalised experience to larger, more social group tours.
  • Brunello tours, for example, cater to a more exclusive market, reflecting the prestige and price point of Brunello wines. You can expect these tours to be either small-group, or private in nature.

Food Pairings and Local Cuisine

  • Many tours incorporate food pairings or meals, highlighting the synergy between Tuscan wines and the region’s rustic cuisine. Look for tours that celebrate this culinary harmony, and knock off two birds with one stone!

Physical Accessibility

  • Assess the physical demands of each tour, especially if mobility is a concern. Some tours involve walking through vineyards or navigating historical cellars.

Customisation and Seasonal Considerations

  • Customisation options can enhance your tour, especially if you have specific wineries or wine types in mind. Also, consider the season of your visit, as the landscape and tour offerings can vary throughout the year.

Practical Tips for Wine Tours

  • Research : Delve into the wineries included on your tour to ensure they match your wine preferences. they’ll often be listed on the tour description.
  • Dress Comfortably : Vineyard tours often involve walking, so comfortable footwear is essential, in my opinion.
  • Stay Hydrated : Remember to drink water between tastings.
  • Check Inclusions : Know what your tour includes, such as meals, transportation, and the number of tastings.
  • Local Regulations : Adhere to local customs and regulations, particularly regarding drinking ages and health and safety measures.

Some Common Questions to Have

Are wine tours in tuscany suitable for beginners.

Absolutely, wine tours in Tuscany cater to everyone, from beginners to connoisseurs – so don’t let this put you off. If you’re new to wine, a tour can be a fantastic introduction. You’ll learn heaps about tasting techniques, grape varieties, and winemaking processes.

Plus, the guides are usually passionate about making wine accessible to all, so don’t be shy to ask any questions you have – no matter how basic they might seem.

Can I join a wine tour without a car?

Yes, you can – in fact wine tours in Tuscany seem to cater very well to this market! Many tours offer pickup services from major cities like Florence and Siena.

For those starting in more remote locations, some companies provide transport options as well. It’s always worth checking the tour details for transportation options, or you could reach out directly to the tour provider to arrange something that works for you.

What should I wear on a wine tour in Tuscany?

Comfort is key! You’ll likely be walking through vineyards and cellars, so wear comfortable shoes suitable for uneven terrain. The weather can be quite variable, too – hot during the day and cooler in the evenings – so layers are your friend. And don’t forget a hat and sunscreen if you’re visiting in the summer!

Is it possible to accommodate dietary restrictions on wine tours?

This typically shouldn’t be a problem. Many tours that include food are more than willing to accommodate different dietary needs. Just make sure to mention your requirements when you book to give them the heads up in advance and to make necessary preparations for you.

Whether you’re vegetarian, vegan, or have specific allergies, they can usually tailor the food to suit your needs. The local cuisine is delicious, and it’s worth experiencing alongside the fantastic wines.

How much wine will I be tasting?

This varies by tour, but generally, you can expect to taste anywhere from 3 to 6 different wines. It’s all about quality over quantity; you’ll be savouring each sip and learning about the characteristics of each wine.

Are children allowed on wine tours?

This depends on the tour operator. Some tours are more family-friendly and can accommodate children with non-alcoholic beverages and even have activities for them. However, others might be more focused on the wine experience and set an age limit for participants. It’s best to check the tour details or contact the provider directly if you’re planning to bring along younger family members.

Can I buy wine directly from the vineyards?

Yes, and the wineries will love you for it – for them, tours are a great showcase of what they have to offer! Visiting the vineyards is a great opportunity to purchase wines directly from the source, often including limited editions or special vintages not widely available elsewhere. Plus, it’s a wonderful way to support the local winemakers.

Many wineries can even arrange shipping for you if you’re worried about luggage space. I’ve been ordering small shipments of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano from a winery I visited many years ago each year at Christmas – it’s great to have that connection into the future.

What’s the best time of year to go on a wine tour in Tuscany?

Tuscany is beautiful year-round, but each season offers a different experience. Spring (April to June) and autumn (September to November) are particularly magical times to visit, with comfortable temperatures and the landscape either blooming or harvest-ready.

Summer can be quite hot but vibrant with tourists and full of life. Winter is quieter, which can be perfect if you’re looking for a more intimate experience, though some wineries may have reduced hours or tours.

Armed with this guide, you’re now ready to explore Tuscany’s premier wine regions.

From the rolling hills of Chianti to the esteemed vineyards of Montalcino and beyond, the perfect wine tour adventure is within reach. Choose wisely, drink responsibly(!!), and immerse yourself in the unparalleled beauty and taste of Tuscany!

Any visitor to Italy is almost certain to be wowed and wooed in equal measure by the heady combination of cultural attractions, rural and architectural beauty and of course the vast (and extremely tasty) array of wines and gastronomic delights on offer,

Italy is reputed to have around 2000 varieties of wine grapes. Officially there are 350 varieties that have been given “authorised” status by the country’s Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry (MIPAAF), though there are around 500 other varieties that have been documented.

The grapes are split into Bianco (white) and Rosso (red) and some of the more recognisable grape varieties include:

  • Pinot Grigio (white): commercially very successful, known as Pinot Gris in France, this grape produces crisp, clean wines that can be anything from mild to full-bodied.
  • Trebbiano (white): this variety is planted more widely than any of the other whites in Italy, though it is perhaps best known for the wines from Abruzzo and Lazio such as Frascati.
  • Barbera (red): grown widely in the Piedmont region and also in some regions in Lombardy, wines from these grapes have grown in international popularity in recent years.
  • Montepulciano (red): a grape variety that used to get something of a bad press as a result of some rather poor quality wines produced from it, the smooth-as-silk offerings of late have put such negativity to bed.
  • Nebbiolo (red): the best Barolo and Barbaresco wines are produced from this grape in the Piedmont region, where the autumn fog-hugged vines spawned its name, which means “little fog”.
  • Sangiovese (red): this is the grape behind such Italian classics as Chianti and Rosso di Montalcino and it also plays a significant role in the so-called Super Tuscans for which it is blended with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc.

Just as the French authorities attempt to maintain standards of quality with their Appellation d’Origine Protégée system, so Italy has its own system of quality control, the top level of which is the Vini DOP (Wines with Protected Designation of Origin). This in turn is split into two sub-categories, Vini DOC (Controlled Designation of Origin) and Vini DOCG (Controlled and Guaranteed Designation of Origin); wines in the latter category must adhere to stricter protocols and analyses, including special tastings by an appointed committee of wine experts. At the time of writing there are 73 DOCG wines and 332 DOC wines.

The Key Italian Wine Regions

Wine is produced all over Italy so essentially whichever part of the country you visit you will not be too far from a vineyard. Having said that, just as in France or Spain, some regions simply produce better wine. The 73 DOCG wines are split across 15 regions, but there is a concentration in the regions of Piedmont, Veneto, Tuscany and Lombardy. Of course, there are a plethora of exceptional wines produced in other regions too, for example as Puglia and Sicily. Here are some of the highlights from the wine regions in which we offer tours.

Home to some of the best-loved wines and most illustrious vineyards, the Piemonte wines produced in in this north-west corner of Italy include Barolo and Barbaresco, which have become synonymous with top quality Italian wine. Turin is the biggest city in the region and is brimming with museums and galleries. However, it is the breath-taking alpine vistas, mountains and lakes that attract many visitors to this area.

The very mention of Sicily often evokes old mafia movies or images of an erupting Mount Etna. But this historically significant island, the largest in the Mediterranean Sea, has a long and illustrious heritage that spans the Phoenicians, the Greeks, the Romans, the Vandals, the Ostrogoths and the Byzantines, each of which left their marks on the culture, cuisine and wine of the island. Indeed viticulture itself was first introduced to Italy by the Mycenaean Greeks in Sicily and southern Italy around 800 BC.

The Amalfi coast is situated on the Sorrentine Peninsula in the Campania region of Italy and though it more likely to evoke thoughts of luxury yachts and colourful dwellings on steep hillsides than its wines, if the surface is scratched oenophiles will be pleasantly surprised.  The Costa d’Amalfi might have only recently been granted DOC status (in August 1995), but the wines produced in the villages of Furore, Ravello and Tramonti in particular have certainly forced wine lovers to take notice, both within Italy and beyond.

Prosecco is the party drink of choice for many, but the region from which this fine fizz hails has a lot to offer wine-loving visitors. As well as the most famous hillside vineyards of Conegliano and Valdobbiadene, there are the culturally dense gems of Venice, Padua and Verona to explore. Throw in some of the best seafood specialities in Italy and the proximity of popular attractions such as Lake Garda and the Dolomites and a wine tour to the Prosecco-producing region of Veneto will be more than satisfying on many different levels.

For many visitors to Italy, Tuscany has it all: picture-perfect scenery with rolling hills of vineyards, some of the greatest concentrations of Renaissance art and architecture in Europe and gastronomic delights aplenty. Oh, and there are quite a few fantastic wines to be found there too! It is the third most planted region in Italy and is third in the list of producers of DOC and DOCG wines in the country as well. Whether you go on a Tuscan Tour in search of the much-vaunted Super Tuscans or you are seeking something more traditional such as wine made from the local grape varieties of Canaiolo or Mammolo, you will not be disappointed.

Very well organised trip to Tuscany, getting in 2 wine regions. Lovely hotel with amazing view. The best part was our guide Paula who ensured our wine tasting tours were with smaller wineries which have authenticity and care for the environment. Highly recommend SmoothRed!

The Best Winery Tours in Italy

italy wine tasting tour

KM Zero Tours

There are thousands of wineries in Italy, spread from the top of the boot all the way down to the tip of the toe, and across the islands of Sicily, Sardinia, and the Tuscan Archipelago. The country has more than 20 wine regions, some—like Tuscany, Veneto, and the Piedmonte—more famous than others.

It would take a lifetime to visit them all, but a trip to Italy allows you to visit a few choice wineries. While it would take a lifetime to visit every Italian winery, we recommend sampling the fruits of Italy's hills and valleys via a winery tour. Tours typically allow you to visit two wineries, with all appointments for tours, tastings, and lunch arranged in advance. When you visit on a winery tour, you often get more specialized attention from the winery, potentially including the chance to meet the winemakers. And the best part? You leave the driving to someone else.

We picked out these best winery tours in Italy with an eye on geographic diversity and specialized service. So do as the Italians do, and say " cin-cin! " (pronounced chin-chin) or cheers, to these favorite winery tours.

Amalfi Coast: Swirl the Glass Amalfi Coast Wine Experiences

Swirl the Glass

Hosted by a trained sommelier and veteran of Michelin-starred restaurants, Swirl the Glass Wine Tours all begin in Positano and include an in-depth winery tour, with an explanation of the wine-making process, followed by tastings and then lunch with wine pairings. Some tours allow for time at a second vineyard. If you don't want to commit to a full-day tour, Swirl the Glass can also arrange a pre-dinner wine tasting at a Positano restaurant or at your private villa.

Lazio (Rome): Old Frascati Food & Wine

Old Frascati Food & Wine

If you're staying in Rome and want a nice escape from the city, look to Old Frascati Food & Wine Tours. Their Classic Half-Day Wine Tour departs from the Frascati train station, which is a short, inexpensive ride from Rome Termini. The tour includes a walking visit to historic Frascati, followed by a trip to a nearby vineyard for tastings. The day wraps up with lunch at a traditional osteria in Frascati. Winery tours aren't always kid-friendly, which is why we like Old Frascati's offerings. Even better, they offer some of the most affordable wine tours.

Umbria: Gusto Wine Tours

Gusto Wine Tours

Umbria is famous for its white wines, but in the hills around Montefalco, ruby-red Sagrantino is king. Discover this small wine-growing region with Mark and Giselle, the amiable couple behind Gusto Wine Tours, which specializes in single-day tours. Their Classic Gusto Wine Tour is a fine place to start. The full-day tour includes stops for tours and tastings at three wineries, lunch at a winery or a rustic agriturismo, and often, the chance to meet with vintners. There is a maximum of 8 participants per tour and private tours are available. Pick-up is from an agreed-upon point.

Tuscany: KM Zero Tours

"Zero kilometers" is a buzz phrase of Italy's slow-food movement. It means eating and drinking as locally and consciously as possible. It's also the philosophy of KM Zero Tours, a Tuscan-based tour company run by an engaging couple, Alessio and Arianna. We love their menu of day-trip offerings , which includes a range of experiences, from winery visits to truffle hunts to bread-making lessons—all with a healthy amount of wine in the mix, of course. Pick-up from Florence is included with most tours, as is lunch and the services of a private guide. They offer some interesting multi-day options, too.

Trentino: Pagus Wine Tours

Pagus Wine Tours

If your mantra is rosé all day, you'll love the Lake Garda and its Rosé tour, one of several highly specialized offerings from the experts at Pagus Wine Tours. Rosé tours depart from your Verona hotel and head 30 minutes to Lake Garda, Italy's largest lake. There, a visit to a lakefront town is followed by visits to two wineries and including lunch with wine pairings. Pagus can also arrange bespoke activities, such as a tour in a vintage automobile, a speedboat tour of the lake, or lunch at a Michelin-starred restaurant. They also have a wine shop in the center of Verona.

Tuscany: Grape Tours of Tuscany

Grape Tours of Tuscany

Tuscany is the land of Chianti and Grape Tours of Tuscany's Super Chianti wine tour is a great way to get to know the chianti wine-growing region. The all-inclusive tours start in Florence, and include two winery tours with tastings, and usually include lunch at butcher Dario Cecchini 's celebrated shop in Panzano. You can also select private day tours, which are only for your group of up to 8 participants and can be tailored to different Tuscan wine regions. A guide accompanies you the whole time and offers thoughtful explanations of the terrain and history of the region. They also offer all-inclusive multi-day trips in Tuscany and other regions.

Prosecco (Veneto/Friuli): Visit Prosecco Italy

Visit Prosecco Italy

The grapes used to make Italy's signature sparkling wine grow in the Prosecco Hills, a small area that straddles the regions of Veneto and Friuli-Venezia Giulia. Visit Prosecco Italy's Full-Day Prosecco Tour offers visits to three or four small wineries that produce Prosecco DOCG superior, the highest quality prosecco. They offer the option of a quick or lingering lunch and a tour often includes a visit to a prosecco vending machine. Most tours depart from Treviso but other arrangements are possible. Not that these tours do not include tasting fees at the wineries.

Sicily: Prestelli Sicily Tours

Prestelli Sicily Tours

The wine-growing region on the fertile slopes of Mount Etna is among the best-known in Sicily, and Prestelli's Private Tour of Three Top Etna Wineries will help you take a deep dive into the region. Tours include an abundant antipasto lunch at the first winery, as well as the chance to sample a range of Etna's vintages, including red, white, and rosé wines. Two more stops offer additional tastings and accompanying snacks, plus there's plenty of stunning scenery along the way.

Monferrato (Piedmont): Tasting Tours

Tasting Tours

Prosecco isn't Italy's only sparkling wine or its only sparkling wine region. In the southeast Piedmont, the area centered around Asti and Alba is famous for Asti Spumante, a light, sparkling wine that tends to run on the sweet side, as well as even sweeter Moscato d'Asti, which is lower in alcohol. Discover the beauty of the region and its wines with Tasting Tours' Monferrato Wine Tour , which starts with a visit to a winemaker specializing in hearty red Barbera d’Asti wines and ends on a sweet note, with a tasting of Asti's sparkling wines.

Puglia: Salento Wine Tours

Salento Wine Tours

The Salento peninsula forms the heel of the boot of Italy, in the southern Puglia region. Once known for mass-produced table wines, it's come into its own as a wine-producing area to watch, especially for its white chardonnay and vermintino wines, and red primitivo and negroamaros. Salento Wine Tour's one-day wine tour in Salento will introduce you to the region and its wines, with visits and tastings at three wineries, plus a lunch of typical regional produce. Pick up is in Lecce. For those who can't do a full-day tour, they'll arrange a tasting of local wines and nibbles in a Lecce wine shop.

Our wine tours offer exclusive access to some of the most prestigious wineries , where you can meet winemakers, explore scenic vineyards, and enjoy gourmet pairings that highlight the best of Italian cuisine and wine.

We offer wine tours in boutique wineries , departing from Florence to destinations in Tuscany, Emilia-Romagna, Umbria and Liguria . We operate in a wide range of wine areas, such as: Chianti Classico, Chianti Rufina, Carmignano, Bolgheri, Montalcino, Montepulciano, Val d'Orcia, Montefalco, Suvereto, Emilia-Romagna, Cinque Terre. These areas are known for qualitative, world-famous grape varieties and their blends of indigenous and non-indigenous grapes.

Our partners, family-run estates, have been involved in the production of wine for generations and have managed to reach a high level of appreciation among wine lovers and connoisseurs alike. They boast award-winning labels and wines and they value the use of unique techniques in their annual production. Apart from winemaking, some of the wineries are specialized in olive oil production and have their own lines of organic, 0 km products.

Italy Wine Tour: 8 Wine Tasting Experiences To Try

Italy Wine tour: A table with a glass of wine overlooking the Val D'Orcia landscape in Tuscany

What’s in this article

I love traveling and trying out different wines.

No wonder, it is very reasonable for me to believe that Italy is a very nice place.

While I’ve enjoyed sampling vintages from around the world, there’s really nothing quite like the wine and culture of Italy.

As both a wine lover and an Italian, I may be biased – but there are so many reasons the country is one of my favorite places for an Italy wine tour.

From the delicious food (pizza and risottos are my weakness!), to amazingly impressive landscape of Italian villages surrounded by vineyards.

And of course, the long, rich history you find everywhere you look on an Italy wine tour.

But most of all, it has to be the wine.

Italy really is the home for Wine – you cannot move an inch without seeing generations-old vineyards whose roots are laden with history and tales.

You have the suitable wine moving from North to South.

Therefore, if you wish to enjoy an adrenaline-filled culinary escapade or cultural expedition, or indulge in the ultimate wine tourism experience, Italy is where it’s at.

You may also want to read this post on how to plan a trip to Italy .

Practical Tips For Planning Your Italy Wine Tour

It is truly thrilling to plan a wine trip in Italy!

Italy is indeed famous across the globe for great wines.

However, I am also aware that coming up with an itinerary is usually daunting as well initially.

Let me try to break it down into simple, manageable steps:

Book in Advance

First, think about what timing works best for your schedule.

Will you go during grape harvest season?

Or aim for spring or fall for mild weather?

Harvest season from late August to October offers the opportunity to see grapes being picked and pressed.

In early summers before the heat sets in or late in the fall when the summer crowds have left.

The winter may vary from one location to the other; it could either be a wet/mild season or dry.

Knowing your dates will help narrow down destinations.

Italy’s top wine regions like Tuscany and Piedmont attract many visitors during peak season.

The best wineries, guides and experiences may book up months ahead, so plan at least 3-6 months in advance if visiting spring through fall.

Craft an Itinerary

Next, start researching regions and what types of wine interest you most.

Do you love the bold reds of Tuscany ?

Or maybe you’re interested in learning about the unique whites produced near Mount Etna in Sicil y.

Specifying one region for your travels will enable you learn more about the regional wines that are produced, as well as the way of life of the people living there.

Once you have a region in mind, look up highly-rated wineries online, that is where you gets touring and tasting service.

Balance must-see wineries with flexibility for serendipitous discoveries.

Map out a route between 3-5 wineries, allowing time for tastings, purchases and relaxing over lunch.

Leave half days free for exploring charming towns or scenic drives between regions.

You should also look for accommodation for you that is close to the wineries, this will save you on long journeys every day.

Be sure to leave some flexibility in case you find a place you love and want to spend more time there.

Book Winery Visits

Many top producers will need a reservation several months ahead of time.

Be sure to have other options should the first ones be unavailable. Look at the official winery website about seasonal operation hours and tours.

Consider Add-Ons

And don’t forget to pair wine with local cuisine – it’s the perfect complement!

Pair wine with cooking classes , hiking or biking between vineyards , luxury villa stays , private helicopter wine tour , or hot air ballooning over the vineyards at sunrise. Cultural activities like art tours or cooking demonstrations add more local flavor.

And set a budget so you can enjoy yourself without going overboard.

If planning all the logistics seems like a lot, don’t worry – there are also excellent guided wine tours available that take care of everything for you.

Unveiling The Top Wine Regions In Italy

Italy is synonymous with wine.

Being among some of the biggest wine producers in the world, Italy provides one of the most vibrant and enjoyable experiences for a wine lover.

Each Italian wine region possesses different terroirs, various grape varieties and individual approaches of wine production.

Let us venture into part of Italy’s unique wines.

Tuscany – Sangiovese and Super Tuscans

Visiting Tuscany remains as one of the best journeys through Italian wine.

The rolling landscape of this central Italian province enjoys worldwide reputation as home of Tuscan sangiovese wines.

The most popular Italian grapes are Sangiovese which find their best expression in Tuscany.

Sangiovese produces the bold earthy red wine of Chianti Classico , Brunello di Montalcino and Vino Nobile of Montepulciano . However, Tuscan has also been popular with these Super Tuscan blends that have had non native grapes like the Cabernet Sauvignon , and Merlot among others.

For instance, Sassicaia , Tignanello , and Ornellaia are popular super Tuscans top.

These luxurious wines demand astronomical bids in auctions as well as in restaurants found across the globe.

Piedmont – Nebbiolo and Barolo

Italy wine tour: Barolo Castle in the Langhe area, Piedmont region

Piedmont is found in Italy’s northwest and arguably carries Italy’s best red wine grape, Nebbiolo.

Nebbiolo varieties make light colored wines marked with sweet scent of roses, thistles and leather as well as robust tannins which bind your jaw.

They also open up over time and are age worthy wines.

Piedmont ’s most renowned Nebbiolo based wines include Barolo and Barbaresco , which are characterized by their complexity and structure.

Though Barolo is heavier with tannins, Barbaresco offers a lighter, sweeter taste such as cherries and spices.

Some of the other good Piedmont wines worth trying include the juicy and acidic, Barbera wine and the lightly sparkling and honeyed Moscato d’Asti .

Explore Piedmont & Liguria wine tasting tours.

Veneto – Amarone and Prosecco

Italy wine tour: Villa Mosconi Bertani in Valpolicella, a neo-classical style villa for wine tasting

Northeastern Veneto excels with both sparkling and still wines.

The iconic wine of the region is Amarone della Valpolicella .

Made from partially dried Corvina, Rondinella, and Molinara grapes, Amarone is a full-bodied, intensely flavored red with raisin, fig, and chocolate notes.

The drying process concentrates sugars and flavors in the grapes. For a fresher style, look for regular Valpolicella or Ripasso. Prosecco , produced just north of Venice, is Italy’s answer to Champagne.

This bubbly, dry white wine is made from the Glera grape in a tank method.

With peach and almond flavors and a palate-cleansing acidity, Prosecco is fun, food-friendly, and budget-friendly too.

Keep an eye out for the premium single-vineyard Conegliano Valdobbiadene Proseccos .

Sicily – Nero d’Avola and Mount Etna Wines

As an island off Italy’s southern coast, Sicily has a climate all its own.

The sun-drenched conditions here are perfect for full-bodied red wines.

Nero d’Avola is Sicily’s signature grape.

Grown throughout the island, it makes robust, tannic wines with black cherry flavors.

Sicily is also home to Mount Etna, Europe’s most active volcano. The volcanic soils surrounding Etna yield minerally, complex reds and whites.

Etna Rosso made from Nerello Mascalese is Etna’s top red.

White Carricante, also grown here, excels in mineral-driven Etna Bianco .

With its warm climate, Sicily also shows promise with international grapes like Syrah and Cabernet.

Explore Sicily wine tasting tours.

Food and Wine Pairing

Italy wine tour: pairing food with a glass of wine

One of the joys of Italian wines is how well they pair with food. Tuscany’s Chianti is a classic match with pasta dishes, pizza, and Parmesan cheese.

Piedmont’s Barolo loves meaty, savory flavors like short ribs, filet mignon, and risotto with truffles.

Amarone ‘s dried fruit profile works beautifully with hard cheeses like Parmigiano-Reggiano .

Bright, acidic Prosecco cuts through fried foods and aperitivo.

And fruit-forward Sicilian reds complement tomato-based, herby dishes.

When matching Italian wines with food, remember that acidity helps wines pair well with savory dishes.

Bold, tannic reds need fat and protein to soften their edges.

Lighter reds and whites work with lighter meats or before heavier courses.

Bubbly and rosé are flexible options too.

By keeping these tips in mind, you’re sure to find great Italian wine and food combinations.

Must try Italian wines

When tasting wines at wineries in Italy, be adventurous!

Italy has hundreds of native grape varieties beyond the commonly known ones.

Always ask for the tasting room manager’s recommendation to try something unique and memorable

Here are some of my favorite must-try Italian wines to seek out on your journey:

Brunello di Montalcino – This prestigious Tuscan red is made entirely from Sangiovese grapes grown around Montalcino. It’s known for its intense cherry, leather, and herbal flavors as well as high acidity and tannins.

Brunello must be aged for at least 4 years before release, but often has the structure to cellar for decades. Classic producers to look for include Biondi-Santi , Altesino , and Poggio Antico .

Barbaresco – Hailing from Piedmont, Barbaresco is an elegant, complex wine based on the Nebbiolo grape. Although not as tannic and long-lived as its sibling Barolo, Barbaresco excels with its floral, red fruit notes and ability to pair with a wide range of foods.

Produttori del Barbaresco is a great cooperative producer. Other top estates include Gaja, Bruno Giacosa , and Roagna .

Amarone della Valpolicella – This specialty of Veneto is Italy’s richest, most full-bodied red made from partially dried grapes. Corvina, Rondinella, and Molinara are used to create a plush texture with intense raisin, fig and chocolate flavors. Top Amarone houses include Tommaso Bussola , Zenato , and Allegrini .

Etna Rosso – Volcanic slopes on Mount Etna yield incredibly complex reds based on Nerello Mascalese. With its bright acidity, earthy minerality, and red fruit notes, Etna Rosso is easy to pair yet also suitable for aging.

Recommended Etna Rosso producers are Graci , Benanti , and Girolamo Russo .

Chianti Classico – No trip to Tuscany is complete without sampling Sangiovese in its historic Chianti Classico heartland.

Chianti Classico offers rustic cherry flavors, herbal aromas, and food-friendly acidity. Fontodi , Castello di Ama , and Castellare di Castellina make excellent examples.

Top Italy wine tour

Here are some top wine tours in Italy for true wine lovers to consider:

Tuscany Wine Tour

Tuscany is a mecca for wine lovers.

Base yourself in Florence and do day trips to Chianti, Montalcino, and Montepulciano to taste iconic wines like Chianti Classico, Brunello, and Vino Nobile.

Pair tastings with visits to medieval villages and winery lunches overlooking vineyards.

I’ve got a great place to recommend if you’re looking to try Chianti wines and delicious food – Tenuta Castello di Albola .

It’s located in a tiny medieval village atop the gorgeous Chianti hills, in one of the best spots among the highest elevations in Chianti Classico, Radda in Chianti.

Within the estate grounds there are two beautiful villas perfect for an unforgettable Tuscan getaway.

Villa Le Marangole from the 1700s is considered by many to be the most beautiful house in Chianti. It’s quite stately!

The smaller and more intimate Villa Crognole from the 1400s is totally surrounded by woods. It has an exclusive pool and panoramic terrace with absolutely breathtaking views across the unique Chianti Classico countryside.

I think you’d love staying there!

Explore wine tasting tours from Florence

Piedmont Wine Tour

Explore the langhe wine region near Alba, known for Barolo, Barbaresco and truffles.

Visit the vineyards, taste wines straight from the barrel, and indulge in Michelin-starred regional cuisine.

Don’t miss noble vineyards like Cannubi and Serralunga d’Alba.

Veneto Prosecco and Amarone Tour

From Venice, head to Prosecco country in Conegliano and Valdobbiadene.

Tour prosecco wineries and sample lively sparkling wines.

Continue to Verona and the Valpolicella zone to taste rich Amarone at historic estates.

Sicily Wine Tour

Tour Sicily’s diverse wine regions from Etna’s volcanic slopes to western Marsala.

Taste Nero d’Avola, frappato, grillo and other native grapes.

Top wineries to visit include Planeta, Tasca d’Almerita, and Donnafugata.

Learn about Sicily’s ancient wine history too.

Abruzzo Food and Wine Tour

Visit Abruzzo to discover up and coming Montepulciano d’Abruzzo paired with fresh seafood.

Experience family-run wineries passed down for generations.

Tour medieval hilltop villages between tastings for a slice of authentic Italy.

These tours allow wine aficionados to dive deep into Italy’s top wine regions.

Having a knowledgeable local guide opens doors at prestigious wineries and access to rare wines not found elsewhere.

Immerse yourself in the culture of Italian wine .

Italy truly is a wine lover’s paradise, with so many amazing regions to explore, it’s hard to pick just one favorite!

These eight destinations are such a great starting point for an itinerary – there really is something for everyone.

I could easily spend a year hopping between Franciacorta, Valpolicella, Val d’Orcia and more and still feel like I’ve barely scratched the surface.

The variety of landscapes, cultures and wine styles on offer is incredible.

And can we talk about how affordable Italian wine can be? Especially if you do lots of tastings direct at the wineries.

It’s such a treat to sample top producers’ wines without breaking the bank.

The passion and pride the families put into their craft really comes through.

If I had to choose a top region, I think I’d have to go with Tuscany. Walking through vineyards with the rolling hills as far as the eye can see – it really takes my breath away.

And of course, the bold reds like Brunello are just to die for.

But it changes all the time!

Everywhere I visit, I fall for something new.

Let me know which destination piques your interest the most – I’d love to share some specific recommendations to help you start planning.

You really can’t go wrong with an Italian wine tour.

Salute! (That’s “Cheers!” in Italian)

Most Italians would agree that Naples has the best pizza in Italy. Naples, the capital of the Campania region, is also the birthplace of pizza! The main ingredients of pizza also come from this region: fresh mozzarella cheese and San Marzano tomatoes, grown in the sun-drenched volcanic soil of Mount Vesuvius.

No one could have failed to notice the rocketing price of olive oil over the last couple of years - and it's been just as bad in Spain, where it is an integral part of the Mediterranean diet.

The Spanish government has now said it will temporarily ditch the sales tax on olive oil to help consumers cope.

Spain is the world's leading producer and exporter of olive oil, and last year Spanish households consumed an average of six litres per person.

However, the country's agriculture ministry says prices have surged by 272% since September 2020.

The Money team wrote this piece in March about why that's happening...

The Spanish government had already cut the sales tax on olive oil from 10% to 5% as part of an anti-inflation package.

Now they've said no sales tax will be applied from July until September, when it will be taxed at 2% until the end of the year.

From then on, it will be taxed at 4%.

Spanish treasury minister Maria Jesus Montero said the decision reflects "the importance of olive oil in the Mediterranean diet and a healthy lifestyle".

The "Oscars of the aviation industry" has taken place and Qatar Airways has come out on top.

Qatar Airways was named the overall winner, as well as first in the business class, business class lounge and Middle East categories, at Skytrax's World Airline Awards last night.

It's the eighth time it has been awarded the best in class.

Last year's winner, Singapore Airlines, came second, followed by Emirates, ANA All Nippon Airways and Cathay Pacific.

British Airways was the highest-ranking UK airline in 13th place.

Europe's best airline was named as Turkish Airlines, while the continent's top low-cost airline was Spanish company Volotea.

The rankings are based on airline passenger satisfaction surveys across more than 100 countries between September 2023 and May 2024.

Other notable names to make the top 100 were: Ryanair (63), easyJet (66), Jet2.com (68) and Tui Airways (83).

These are the airlines that made the top 20:

1. Qatar Airways 2. Singapore Airlines 3. Emirates 4. ANA All Nippon Airways 5. Cathay Pacific Airways 6. Japan Airlines 7. Turkish Airlines 8. EVA Air 9. Air France 10. Swiss International Air Lines 11. Korean Air 12. Hainan Airlines 13. British Airways 14. Fiji Airways 15. Iberia 16. Vistara 17. Virgin Atlantic 18. Lufthansa 19. Etihad Airways 20. Saudi Arabian Airlines.

Two issues are dominating the behaviour of investors at the moment: US inflation and the snap parliamentary election in France.

Uncertainty over the two has been driving a topsy-turvy performance on stock markets as any scrap of evidence over the potential timing of a US interest rate cut is seized upon.

A sticky inflation picture across the pond – as we have witnessed here – has pushed back Federal Reserve and therefore market expectations for a reduction in borrowing costs.

The next big number awaited is the latest personal consumption expenditures price index, a closely watched inflation indicator at the US central bank.

A weaker than expected number could see a boost for shares globally after a volatile few weeks.

Following a 0.4% decline yesterday, the FTSE 100 opened 0.4% up at 8,285.

Among the wider shares doing well were those of AO World, up more than 3%.

The online electricals retailer raised growth targets for its current financial year after profits over the 12 months to the end of March beat market expectations.

The pound and dollar have benefitted amid struggles for the euro over the past couple of weeks.

Much of that has been down to election speculation in France where Marine Le Pen's National Rally (RN) is leading first-round polling.

The election was called by President Emmanuel Macron after RN's strong gains in the recent European elections, sparking a renewed market focus on the French economy and the potential knock-on effects for the euro area.

France has a debt to GDP ratio of 110%, meaning its debt is more than the value of its annual output.

There is a budget deficit of 5%. EU rules allow for just 3%.

The market's worry, according to analysts, is that if the far-right RN were to win big in the first round, then voters may take a tactical turn to the left in the second.

It is a concern for France and the wider euro, they said, because a left-wing alliance influence in government would seek even greater public spending commitments than RN has made.

French government borrowing costs have soared since the election announcement.

Earlier this month, the risk premium France pays for its debt on top of Germany's neared levels last seen in 2012.

Quorn has been known for decades as a producer of meat-free alternatives - but in a new venture, it will be blending actual pork sausages with fake meat.

The company has said it wants to reach consumers who are cutting down on their meat consumption but who are not going entirely vegetarian or vegan, according to a report in The Grocer .

The new products include burgers and sausages, and will contain Quorn's mycoprotein blended with meat.

They will be available by the end of the year within the NHS and from some food service operators.

Marco Bertacca, Quorn's chief executive, told the publication that appealing to meat eaters "represents the majority of people, and so it is a massive opportunity to decarbonise part of the food system and improve public health".

"Once upon a time we were effectively competing with the meat industry – only making products that were alternatives to theirs, and encouraging people to switch," he said.

"There have been attempts in the past to make products like burgers and sausages with a blend of meat and plant-based ingredients like soya and pea protein, but the products have not delivered for consumers."

It told Sky News that it is still in the development stages of its catering partnerships but it has had "fantastic" feedback on the quality of the products and impact on sustainability targets so far.

Livestock farming accounts for about 15% of global greenhouse emissions, according to FAO data.

Every Wednesday we ask Michelin chefs to pick their favourite Cheap Eats where they live and when they cook at home. This week we speak to the highly celebrated Shaun Rankin from Michelin-starred Shaun Rankin at Grantley Hall - who won the Great British Menu dessert course in 2009.

Hi Shaun , c an you tell us your favourite places in North Yorkshire  where you can get a meal for two for less than £40?

North Yorkshire is bountiful in its selection of brilliant places to dine and we're incredibly lucky to have so many eateries on our doorstep.

My first recommendation would be the Blue Lion , a traditional country pub nestled within the picture-perfect village of East Witton in the Yorkshire Dales. Enjoy a scenic walk through the surrounding countryside before stopping off for lunch – their light lunch menu includes personal favourites such as croque madame with a rocket salad and Black Sheep-battered fish and chips.

If you're heading in to explore the characterful charm of Ripon, a trip to Oliver's Pantry is a must. They do great coffee alongside a delicious all-day brunch, an array of sweet treats and their seasonal lunch menu packed with fresh homemade dishes.

What's your go-to cheap meal at home?

Chicken pesto pasta with mushrooms and broccoli - a delicious, easy dish to prepare and packed with nutrients.

My tip for this dish is to buy a whole chicken and roast it whole – it's so much more cost-effective than buying chicken breast or thigh, and you can enjoy several meals from just the one bird. With the leftovers I'll prepare a simple soup by making a chicken stock from the carcass, or perhaps a comforting bowl of chicken egg fried rice with the meat, so nothing is wasted.

We've spoken to lots of top chefs and bloggers - check out their cheap eats from around the country here...

Those looking to drive to polling stations can park for free this general election.

JustPark are offering drivers 30 minutes of free parking near polling stations on 4 July.

They will need to pre-book online or via the JustPark app, however.

"We believe that everyone should have the opportunity to vote, but know that on the day it isn't always that straightforward," Mary Corrie, managing director of Just Park UK, said.

"By offering free parking on election day, we hope to make it easier for all voters, especially those with mobility issues or who are short on time, to find a place to park near their polling station.

"This is the second time we have offered this service, following its great success in the 2019 election, and we are confident it will help to get people to the polls once again."

EDF and Utilita have been ranked the worst suppliers for customer service, as ratings across the industry reached their lowest point, according to Citizens Advice .

One of the highest-scoring suppliers this time last year, EDF fell to the very bottom of the table after its average call waiting times jumped from just under a minute to more than five minutes.

Average customer ratings between January and March for all firms fell by 10.5% compared with the same period in 2021.

"Citizens Advice has long called for Ofgem to be given stronger powers to hold suppliers to account on customer service. That must include tackling the complaints backlog before next winter," said Citizens Advice chief executive Dame Clare Moriarty.

At the bottom of the table, both Utilita and EDF scored 2.1 out of five stars, followed closely by British Gas on 2.4.

Dale Vince's Ecotricity topped the rankings with 3.8, followed by Outfox the Market and Ovo Energy, both scoring 3.3.

Among the other big suppliers, E.ON Next scored 3.0, Scottish Power 2.9 and Octopus 2.5.

An EDF spokeswoman said: "We recognise our call answer times haven't been up to the high standards we set ourselves and we're committed to doing better."

The company has recruited and trained more people at its Sunderland, Brighton and Exeter offices, she said.

She added EDF were nearing the end of a "complex transfer of our residential customers to a new IT system, resulting in more customers getting in touch as we navigate this process".

Utilita said: "We must not underestimate how savvy consumers are today. They will realise the star rating contradicts other market-wide supplier assessments – including those of Ofgem, Trustpilot and Which? – where Utilita performs consistently well.

"As such, we look forward to ongoing dialogue to close the gap between the perception the Citizens Advice star rating gives, and the reality other rankings provide."

Two Bristol-based start-ups are trialing whether urine passed at Glastonbury festival can be used as eco-friendly fertiliser, reports The Times .

Peequal, which provides the UK's largest music festival with female urinals, and NPK Recovery have developed a way to recover nutrients that encourage plant growth from waste, such as nitrogen and potassium.

This week, Peequal will collect thousands of litres of festival-goers' urine to be processed at NPK's lab, before it is administered to plants in a greenhouse.

Thames Water is not in line for nationalisation should Labour win the election, its shadow business and trade secretary has said.

"I wouldn't want to see a nationalisation. I think there should be a solution that falls short of that," said Jonathan Reynolds in a Bloomberg TV election debate.

Thames Water has been plunged into crisis, with representatives of its multinational syndicate of shareholders refusing to inject the billions of pounds of funding required to bail it out.

Just one week ago, Nvidia became the world's most valuable company.

The chipmaker - whose shares had risen nine-fold since the end of 2022 -  overtook Microsoft  as its stock market valuation reached $3.34trn (£2.63trn).

Since then, the shares have fallen by 13%, declining in each of the last three trading sessions.

That has been enough to clip more than $500bn (£394bn) from  Nvidia's  stock market valuation.

So what's going on?

Amazon has announced another Prime Day sale next month.

The discount event, which is only available to Prime members, will be held on 16 and 17 July.

It typically takes place twice a year - once in July and again in October, with deals dropping regularly on a range of products.

Based on last year's event, Which? expects the online giant to offer discounts across most of its departments, including electronics, kitchen appliances, baby products and health and personal care.

The consumer website predicts an Amazon Fire TV Cube, Ring Stick Battery Cam, Instant Pot Vortex 4-in-1 air fryer and Shark cordless vacuum could be some of the big ticket items on sale.

If you aren't already a Prime member, you might be able to sign up for a free trial before the sales begin, and then cancel it before you get charged.

To do this, you should cancel within 30 days, or you'll be switched automatically onto a regular membership, which is £8.99 a month.

If you're a student, you can get six months for free. You'll need to prove your course enrolment by providing Amazon with your university email address.
