Nanning Travel Guide

Southern China

Local Dialects

Welcome to Nanning!

On the surface, Nanning seems like an ordinary, non-touristy city which is home to over seven million people. But once you arrive there, you’ll find a city that’s become famous for its greenery and relaxing, friendly vibe.

  • Things to do
  • Where to eat
  • Where to stay
  • Around Nanning

Nicknamed the ‘Green City’, Nanning is the capital of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region in southern China.

Nanning is filled with trees, and even has streets dedicated to different varieties of trees. This gives a natural and vibrant atmosphere to the entire city.

It also has a humid, subtropical climate with reasonably warm winters, so it’s the ideal escape if you get tired of the icy cold back home.

Nanning is China’s gateway to Vietnam, offering you the chance to take a quick trip over the border – just remember to get a visa ! You should really take advantage of this opportunity if you want to make the most of your time in this part of the world.

The best things do in Nanning

Nanning isn’t that popular among foreign tourists, so the best things to do in the city are the things that the locals love to do as well.

1. Relax in South Lake Park

South Lake Park or Nanhu Park (南湖公园) is huge – it covers about 200 hectares (500 acres) and is located in Nanning’s southeast.

It has a lake in the center that was once a brook, but the area was flooded during the Tang Dynasty, creating a serene water feature in the city’s center.

Nanhu Lake is a good place for a picnic or a relaxing walk on a warm afternoon. It’s particularly good in spring, when the park’s flora and fauna come out to play, so make sure you take plenty of photographs during your visit.

And, when you get hungry, head to one of the park’s fish restaurants for some delicious seafood dishes.

2. Explore the museums

The Guangxi Museum of Nationalities is Nanning’s most popular museum.

The exhibits inside this museum explore the history of the Guangxi region with a particular focus on the region’s ethnic minority groups.

You’ll find a range of art, ceramics, and calligraphy as well as information on the customs of the region’s minorities. This includes a collection of ancient copper drums, an important relic of China’s history.

When you travel to Nanning, you need to learn more about the city and its history. And you can do just that at Nanning Museum .

Housed within an enormous contemporary building, the museum takes you through the city’s history from AD318 in the form of ancient art, ceramics and relics.

There isn’t much English at the museum, but you’ll still enjoy the window into the city’s past and present.

3. See Detian Waterfall

Detian Waterfall is the largest waterfall in Asia, standing at 70 m (230 ft). It straddles the border between China and Vietnam.

The waterfall is absolutely stunning and there’s something new to see in every season. In spring, you can see the waterfall surrounded by bright red flowers and in winter, the lower water will expose more of the cliff side.

No matter what time of year you visit, you’ll get the chance to see the waterfall surrounded by the absolutely stunning natural landscape of the area.

Detian Waterfall is about a two-hour drive from downtown Nanning. Consider booking a private driver as the shuttle bus may take three hours.

4. Climb Qingxiu Mountain

Qingxiu Mountain isn’t really a mountain. It’s just under 289 m (950 ft) tall.

However, with lush tropical greenery, crystal clear lakes and stylistically unique architecture, Qingxiu Mountain is worth visiting.

Mount Qingxiu

Plus, it’s located just 5 km (3 mi) from downtown Nanning.

The area around the mountain is big and hilly, so hop on the little tourist bus for a few yuan and save your feet.

5. Buy some souvenirs and local products

Like most of China, Nanning has been experiencing an economic boom lately, and there’s no better way to experience this than by doing some shopping. Nanning boasts numerous malls and popular shopping areas including:

  • Qixing Street for shopping malls and street vendors
  • Xinning Street for gold and silver jewelry
  • Chaoyang Road for large malls and retailers.

Nanning is also famous for some of its local products like:

  • Zhuang Jin, a kind of brocade
  • Fresh fruit such as mango, pineapple and longan (which is kind of like lychee)
  • Leather goods
  • Gold and silver jewelry.

The Cultural Innovation Space of the Museum of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region Store offers traditional Zhuang embroidery and gift boxes filled with tea, wine and food from across the province.

If you’re looking for an unusual Chinese souvenir to take home with you, then you’ll definitely find it in this store.

6. Clamber through Yiling Cave

Located about 18 km (11 mi) from the center of Nanning in Wuming County, this cave is said to be millions of years ago.

It’s filled with a range of stalagmite and stalactites, many of them naturally curved into interesting shapes.

The visual impact of the cave is stunning and it’s well worth getting a little damp and cramped to experience.

Where to eat in Nanning

Because of its location in China’s southwest, Nanning offers a tantalizing mix of cuisines.

The traditional local food tends to be spicy and similar to Cantonese food, but you’ll also find amazing Vietnamese food as well as dishes from other provinces in China .

Some of the most famous dishes in Nanning are:

  • Laoyou (‘old friend’) rice noodle soup
  • Fish head porridge
  • Ba Zhen rice noodles
  • Rolled rice pancakes
  • Fermented vegetables.

You can read more about the most popular dishes in China here .

The best food markets in Nanning

Markets are amazing places in China. They’re full of noise, life and color, as well as some of the best and freshest foods you’ll ever taste.

Zhongshan Lu Market

This is one of the most popular night markets in the city and it gets amazingly crowded. But you probably won’t notice that once you try some of the local street food.

(Discover more of China’s street food here .)

Try the snacks on skewers but make sure you know what you’re eating as some of the stalls offers spiders and scorpions!

Three Streets and Two Lanes

This area comprises three old streets named Xingning Road, Jiefang Road and Minsheng Road, and two ancient lanes named Silver Lion Lane and Golden Lion Lane.

Here, you’ll find lots of historical complexes and houses. Many of the buildings in this area date back to the Ming and Qing Dynasties and it’s a popular place at night among the locals and tourists.

In this area, you’ll find a range of traditional foods as well as local restaurants nestled in ancient buildings. All of this makes this street one of the best places to eat in Nanning if you want a bit of atmosphere with your delicious food.

Where to stay in Nanning

The best Nanning accommodation is modern, comfortable, and close to public transport and places to eat and shop.

The Zijinghua Chain Hotel Xiuling Road is close to the local metro station and Guangxi University.

The rooms are simple but clean and come in a variety of sizes to suit all travel groups. The hotel also has its own restaurant in case you don’t feel like going out for a meal.

Xiaduo Hotel opened in 2019, so you know that everything in the hotel is modern and new.

It’s within walking distance of the metro and close to Jinhua Tea Garden and Binhu Square, so you shouldn’t have to go far for a meal or some entertainment!

With a restaurant and a café at the hotel, you’ll never be short of things to eat or drink and everything at the hotel is very clean.

K International Hotel is close to the Folk Song Lake Scenic Area and shopping malls like Wanda Plaza. It’s also just a short walk from the local metro station, so you can explore the rest of the city without too much trouble!

With a café, restaurant and bar, this hotel has everything you’ll need to stay fed and entertained throughout the day and evening. It also has large, modern rooms with bathtubs for a little extra luxury.

Transport in Nanning

Well developed and modern, Nanning’s transport system will make exploring the city simple and cheap.

The easiest way to get to Nanning is by plane.

The Nanning Wuxu International Airport is 32 km (20 mi) from the city center and offers direct routes to domestic cities as well as to nearby international cities like Hanoi and Bangkok.

You can get to the airport by shuttle bus, which runs regularly from the airport to the downtown area for around 15 yuan per person. You can also take a taxi to the airport, after discussing the fare with your driver, or local bus No. 301.

Check out our list of Chinese airlines .

Long distance bus

The highways around Nanning are well developed, making long-distance buses a popular choice for travelers who have a little more time and want to save money.

There are five main bus stations in the city offering buses throughout the province as well as to major cities in China like Beijing and Chengdu .

The bus stations are:

  • Xixiangtang

You can also get to Detian Waterfall or Vietnam from Langdong Bus Station.

Long distance rail

There are two main railway stations in the city: the Nanning Railway Station and the East Railway Station. You can catch trains from one of these stations to cities throughout China.

The Nanning Railway Station mostly offers normal-speed trains as well as overnight trains to Hanoi in Vietnam.

At the East Railway Station, you’ll find mostly high-speed trains, which are a very convenient way to explore China.

The city has plans to build eight metro lines but only four are in operation at the moment with Line 5 under construction.

Nanning isn’t a huge city though, so the four metro lines cover a fair expanse of the city, making them a fast and convenient way to get around.

Nanning Metro

The local buses are plentiful, cheap and easy to use. They run from around 6 am to 11 pm and usually cost CNY1, or CNY2 for a bus with air conditioning.

Many of the buses don’t have conductors, so you’ll need to have the correct change before getting on.

You’ll also need to map out your route before getting on the bus, as there isn’t a lot of English at the bus stops.

Sightseeing bus

Nanning has a sightseeing bus which takes tourists to the top attractions in the city. You can buy two-day tickets for the bus which will allow you to make four trips over those two days.

Here are some of the places that these buses go past:

  • Sightseeing Bus Line A goes to Nanhu Rare Tree Exposition Garden, Jinhu Square, Southeast Asia Food Street, Guangxi Museum of Nationalities and Mt Qingxiu
  • Sightseeing Bus Line B goes to Guangxi Science and Technology Museum, Ethnic Square, and the Flower and Bird Market.

There are lots of taxis in Nanning and they can take you almost anywhere. They are more expensive than the buses or metro, but you won’t have to walk as far, so it evens out.

Just make sure that you have your destination and hotel written down in Chinese as your driver probably won’t speak English.

Traveling outside of Nanning

Some of Nanning’s best features can be found outside of the city limits, particularly if you enjoy getting out into nature!

Vietnam is such a short distance from Nanning that it would be a waste not to visit while you’re in the area.

You’ll need a visa to cross the border though – you can get your visa here .

The largest city close to the border is Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam and one of the most exhilarating and interesting Asian cities you’ll experience.

Hanoi tourist bike transport

Experience new things in Vietnam. Image by Xuan Duong on Pixabay.

The bus from Nanning to Hanoi takes about nine hours but is quite cheap. Jump on a plane if you want to save time.

If you’re not keen on crossing the border but still want to travel a bit, then head north to scenic Guilin with its world-famous hilly landscape.

You can get there by bullet train in under three hours. And you’ll still be in Guangxi.

Daming Mountain

Daming Mountain is the highest mountain in south Guangxi and a first-class natural reserve. It’s also a beautiful scenic spot with peaceful valleys, soaring cliffs, lush forests, and trickling streams.

This is one of the rare places in the south where you can see frost on the trees and the mountain peaks in winter, but this definitely isn’t a skiing destination.

Instead, it’s a place where you can enjoy fire-red trees in the Chinese autumn , and sweet flowers in spring. There’s also a waterfall where you can cool yourself off in the hot, sticky summer.

Yangmei Ancient Town

This town is about a one-hour drive from the center of Nanning at the lower reach of the Zuo River.

It’s the most well-preserved complex from the Ming and Qing Dynasties in the province, and a good place to visit if you want to feel China’s real age.

The town also boasts beautiful scenery that looks just likes scenes you’ll find on Chinese ink paintings. It also offers some tasty and unique local snacks that you won’t find anywhere else.

The trip from Nanning to Yangmei Ancient Town takes around 1.5 hours by bus or 1 hour by boat.

Nanning is the capital of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region in southern China. It is known as the "Green City" because of its abundance of lush tropical foliage.

History A county seat was first established at the site in AD 318; called Jinxing, it also became the administrative seat of a commandery. Nanning was once the territory of the Baiyue people and became the capital of Jinxing Prefecture separated from Yulin Prefecture of the Eastern Jin Dynasty. It was the first time for Nanning to be the seat of a county and a prefecture, which marked the beginning of the founding of its administrative division.

In 589 the commandery was suppressed, and the county was renamed Xuanhua. Under the Tang dynasty (618 - 907) the prefecture of Yong (Yongzhou) was established there; it was garrisoned to control the non-Chinese districts in Guangxi and on the Yunnan - Guizhou provincial border. In the mid-9th century the Tang and the Yunnan state of Nanzhao fought over it, and after 861 it was briefly occupied by Nanzhao. It remained a frontier prefecture throughout the Song dynasty (960 - 1279), being the scene of a rebellion led by Nong Zhigao in 1052 and thereafter a garrison town.

In the Yuan Dynasty in 1324, it was renamed as Nanning Lu (an administrative division) from Yongzhou Lu meaning "May peace maintain in the southern frontier", hence the name Nanning. In its history, Nanning was famous for business trade, which had had permanent business offices from other areas in China since the Song Dynasty.

Under the Ming (1368 - 1644) and Qing (1644 - 1911) dynasties, it was a superior prefecture, Nanning. In the Ming Dynasty Nanning developed into the commodity distributing center of the Zuojiang River and the Youjiang River with the reputation of "Little Nanjing".

Opened to foreign trade by the Chinese in 1907, it grew rapidly. From 1912 to 1936 it was the provincial capital of Guangxi, replacing Guilin in 1914.

Early in the 20th century the city spilled over from the old walled city into a southern suburban area. In the 1930s Nanning became the centre of a "model provincial government" under the warlord Li Zongren, and a spacious modern city was laid out. During the Second Sino-Japanese War (1937 - 45), Nanning was temporarily occupied in 1940 by the Japanese. It subsequently became an important U.S. air base supporting the Chinese armies in Guangxi, but during 1944 - 45 it was again under Japanese occupation.

In 1949 Nanning again became the provincial capital, first of Guangxi province and then (1958) of the Zhuang autonomous region of Guangxi, which replaced it. Until then Nanning had essentially been a commercial center dependent on Guangzhou and on the Xi River system. In the late 1930s a railway was begun, joining Hengyang in southern Hunan province with Guilin, Liuzhou, Nanning, and the Vietnam border, while another was begun from Liuzhou to Guiyang in Guizhou. The construction of the Nanning section of this line was halted in 1940 by the Japanese advances, however, and was not completed until 1951, after which Nanning was directly linked with central China; completion of a branch line to the port of Zhanjiang (in Guangdong) in 1957 gave it a direct outlet to the sea. During the French war in Indochina (1946 - 54), Nanning was the chief support base in China for the Vietnamese forces, and during the Vietnam War in the 1960s and early 1970s it again became a staging post for the sending of supplies southward to North Vietnam. It was also an important military supply center during the Sino-Vietnam confrontation in 1979.

Formerly an essentially commercial and administrative center, Nanning from 1949 experienced industrial growth. The city is surrounded by a fertile agricultural region producing subtropical fruits and sugarcane; food processing, flour milling, sugar refining, meatpacking, and leather manufacture are important in the city. Nanning has been a center for printing and paper manufacture, and it is also important in heavy industry.

After the recognition of the Zhuang ethnic minority in 1958, Nanning became the chief center for the training of Zhuang leaders. Guangxi University, a large medical school, and a school of agriculture all date from the 1920s.

Nanning served as host for annual China-ASEAN EXPO (CASEAN EXPO) in 2005 and as the venue for the 2006 "World Robotics Olympiad".

Geography Nanning is located in the southern part of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, 160 km from the border with Vietnam. It has an area of 22,293 square kilometers.

The city is located on the north bank of the Yong River, the chief southern tributary of the Xi River, and lies some 30 km below the confluence of the Yu and the Zuo rivers. The Yong River (which later becomes the Yu River) affords a good route to Guangzhou and is navigable by shallow-draft junks and motor launches, even though it is obstructed by rapids and sandbanks.

Nanning is situated in a hilly basin with elevations between 70 and 500 m above sea-level. Qingxiu Mountain dominates the southern part of town.

Climate Nanning's climate is sub-tropical and monsoonal and it is sometimes warm in winters as well as summers. Average temperature is 21.7°C. It is often windy or breezy and very rainy, with more than 1300 mm of precipitation annually. It is also frost-free for all but 3 or 4 days a year and never snows. Summers are hot and humid with 33°C average highs in July and August. Winters are humid and chilly with 10°C average lows in January.

Nanning is home of the 21st tallest building in the People's Republic of China, the Diwang International Commerce Center (276 meters), it is currently the tallest building in Guangxi and southwestern China (excluding Chongqing). The second tallest building in Nanning is the World Trade Commerce City standing at 218 meters. The city currently has seven buildings taller than 100 meters, built or under construction. Nanning has many parks with tropical lush green landscape, it is one of the "greenest" cities in China, and it's known as "Green City"(绿城). Nanning's downtown skyline is rapidly changing and the city is becoming an important hub in China.

Culture Nanning is the center of science and technology, education, culture and sanitation in Guangxi Province. There are altogether 54 scientific research institutes subordinate to districts. 10 colleges and 50 trade schools are training specialty personnel of all kinds for society. Now there are 62 mass cultural organizations, 13 performing groups, 8 cinemas, 285 projecting units, over 70 karaoke halls and over 1000 newsstands. Bookshops and cultural markets can be found everywhere.

Foods Nanning has not only food in Guangxi cuisine but also food of any dish or cuisine home and abroad. There are traditional food cultures around every street in Nanning. The food of Nanning shares the elite of Cantonese food and exoticness of that of Southeast Asia and is defined by freshness, tenderness, tastiness and creaminess and nutrition, flexible with seasons and rich in food material selection. LOOKING TO BOOK A TAXI TO COLLECT ME FROM NANNING AIRPORT AND TAKE ME TO MY HOTEL IN YULIN

Please ask your hotel to book a taxi for you. Have a nice trip!

Can I hire a taxi from Manning airport to detian waterfall area?

The distance between Nanning airport and Detian Waterfall is over 200km. It is very expensive to take a taxi and you have to bargain for a rental rate. Not sure about the present market price. Alternatively, you may first take a taxi to Langdong Bus Station ( 琅东汽车站) wheren you take a long-distance bus for Detian Waterfall ( 3 hours ).

Can you please let me know if you can provide a taxi from Nanning to Beiliu, and returning two days later in October? Is so what would this cost? Many thanks

Dear Alison Bennett,

Try to negotiate with a taxi driver when you arrive in Nanning.

Tesla's Full Self-Driving In China Faces E-Scooter Challenge, Complex Roads, Warns Xpeng's Autonomous Driving Chief

Zinger key points.

  • Xpeng's Li Liyun warns Tesla's FSD in China faces challenges from 300M e-scooters using motor lanes amid complex road conditions.
  • Xpeng's proven smart driving capabilities in Chinese cities underscore readiness for FSD challenges, ahead of Tesla's imminent launch.

Tesla, Inc. TSLA is reportedly expected to encounter a significant challenge upon introducing Full Self-Driving (FSD) technology in China, where there are over 300 million e-scooters .

This caution has been expressed by the EV behemoth’s Chinese rival XPeng Inc. ‘s XPEV head of autonomous driving, Li Liyun , CnEV Post reported , citing a post on Weibo.

Check This Out: XPeng CEO Tests Tesla’s Full Self-Driving Software In US, Compares Tesla’s Full Self-Driving Software With Xpeng’s Navigation Guided Pilot

He highlighted that China’s road conditions are notably more complex than those in the U.S.

Li pointed out that China suffers from a significant lack of dedicated lanes for non-motorized vehicles, with approximately 30% of roads in central Guangzhou, for instance, lacking such lanes.

Li noted that in China, electric scooters often use motor vehicle lanes, posing a challenge for Tesla’s FSD upon its introduction to the country, CnEV Post added.

He emphasized that optimizing smart driving experiences for these common scenarios is crucial for achieving effective performance in China’s complex driving environment.

Xpeng’s smart driving capabilities have been successfully tested in cities like Nanning, Guangzhou, Kunming, and Nanchang, handling complex scenarios involving electric scooters, as Li highlighted.

Xpeng’s upcoming XNGP version, expected in July, will integrate end-to-end large model technology for broader use cases, the report read.

In China, where electric scooters are essential for short-distance travel, there are 350 million of these vehicles, with 42.28 million produced in 2023 alone, according to China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.

As Tesla prepares to introduce its Full Self-Driving (FSD) software in China, recent developments indicate progress toward its official launch this year, CnEV Post added.

Price Action: TSLA shares are trading flat at $196.28 at last check Thursday.

China’s Lust for Durian Is Creating Fortunes in Southeast Asia

Demand for the fruit, known for its rich taste and intense smell, has reshaped parts of Southeast Asia, where it has long been a staple.

Thomas Fuller and Gabriela Bhaskar reported from durian orchards in Malaysia and Thailand. Fuller has been writing about durian for more than two decades.

  • Published June 16, 2024 Updated June 18, 2024

Before he started a company 15 years ago selling the world’s smelliest fruit, Eric Chan had a well-paying job writing code for satellites and robots. His family and friends were puzzled when he made the career change.

Listen to this article with reporter commentary

The fruit, durian, has long been a cherished part of local cultures in Southeast Asia, where it is grown in abundance. A single durian is typically the size of a rugby ball and can emit an odor so powerful that it is banned from most hotels. When Mr. Chan began his start-up in his native Malaysia, durians were cheap and often sold from the back of trucks.

Then, China acquired a taste for durian in a very big way.

Last year, the value of durian exports from Southeast Asia to China was $6.7 billion, a twelvefold increase from $550 million in 2017. China buys virtually all of the world’s exported durians, according to United Nations data. The biggest exporting country by far is Thailand; Malaysia and Vietnam are the other top sellers.

Demand for durians is transforming lives — and landscapes — in Southeast Asia.

Workers pick durian at a farm in Chanthaburi.

The fruit is often grown in plantations like this one, which is spread over 1,000 acres in the Malaysian state of Pahang.

Today, businesses are expanding rapidly — one Thai company is planning an initial public offering this year — and some durian farmers have become millionaires. Mr. Chan is one of them. Seven years ago, he sold a controlling share of his company, which specializes in producing durian paste for cookies, ice cream and even pizza, for the equivalent of $4.5 million, nearly 50 times his initial investment.

“Everybody has been making good money,” Mr. Chan said of the once-poor durian farmers in Raub, a small city 90 minutes from Kuala Lumpur, the Malaysian capital. “They rebuilt their houses from wood to brick. And they can afford to send their children overseas for university.”

“Everybody has been making good money,” Eric Chan said.

Farmers in Southeast Asian durian orchards say they can’t recall anything like the China craze.

The surge in durian exports is a measure of the power of Chinese consumers in the global economy, even though, by other measures, the mainland economy is struggling. When an increasingly wealthy country of 1.4 billion people gets a taste for something, entire regions of Asia are reshaped to meet the demand.

In Vietnam, state news media reported last month that farmers were cutting down coffee plants to make room for durian. The acreage of durian orchards in Thailand has doubled over the past decade. In Malaysia, jungles in the hills outside Raub are being razed and terraced to make way for plantations that will cater to China’s lust for the fruit.

In Chanthaburi, Thailand, a small distribution center is brimming with durians.

Packing odd-shaped durians can be a game of Tetris.

Pickup trucks stuffed with the fruit clog the roads of Chanthaburi.

“I think durian will be the new economic boom for Malaysia,” said Mohamad Sabu, the country’s minister of agriculture.

With so much money at stake, the race to plant more trees has spawned tensions. Land disputes have broken out over durian orchards. Some roadside orchards are surrounded by coils of razor wire. “Thieves Will Be Prosecuted,” a sign outside an orchard in Raub said, with a drawing of handcuffs.

China is not only a buyer. Chinese investment has flowed into Thailand’s durian packing and logistics business. Already, Chinese interests control around 70 percent of the durian wholesale and logistics business, according to Aat Pisanwanich, a Thai expert in international trade. Thailand’s own wholesale durian companies could “disappear in the near future,” he said at a news conference in May.

Durian is to fruit what truffles are to mushrooms: Pound for pound, the fruit has become one of the most expensive on the planet. Depending on the variety, a single durian can sell for anywhere between $10 to hundreds of dollars.

But Chinese demand, which has pushed up prices fifteenfold over the past decade, has frustrated Southeast Asian consumers, who see durians morphing from a plentiful fruit growing in the wild and in village orchards to a luxury commodity earmarked for export.

Countries are exporting a fruit that is an integral part of their identities and cultures, especially in Malaysia, where it is a unifying national icon among its many ethnic groups. “God gave us a desire for durian,” said Hishamuddin Rais, a Malaysian film director and political activist.

nanning china travel service

Eating an entire durian, which for most people is too rich and filling to do alone, is often a social event in Southeast Asia. The act of opening a durian, which requires a very sharp knife or machete, feels festive and brings friends together the way that sharing a bottle of fine wine does in other cultures. Mr. Hishamuddin pointed out that a traditional expression declares it a tragedy if a Malay person doesn’t like durian. The fruit is even embedded in the country’s financial lexicon: The Malay word for a windfall is durian runtuh, a term that offers the joyous image of durians collapsing to the ground.

The China surge is reshaping the durian supply chain. It’s relatively easy to deliver the fruit in the back of a truck to regional destinations like Kuala Lumpur, Singapore or Bangkok. But shipping it to Guangzhou, Beijing and beyond, especially when the fruit is ripe and most flavorful, can be perilous. The fruit’s potent smell can resemble a gas leak.

photo

Some Chinese consumers have complained that durians are arriving unripe. Thai authorities have begun to crack down, requiring durian farmers to bring in samples of their fruit for inspection.

Durians are inspected to check their ripeness before they can be picked for export at Khao Khitchakut District Agricultural Extension Office.

A prematurely harvested durian can be as tasteless as a green banana.

One of many examples of durian-incited emergencies was in 2019, when a Boeing 767 passenger jet took off from Vancouver, British Columbia, with a shipment of durians in the cargo hold. According a report by Canadian regulators, the pilots and crew “noticed a strong odor throughout the aircraft” soon after takeoff. Fearing a problem with the plane, the pilots strapped on their oxygen masks and told air traffic controllers that they needed to land urgently. Once on the ground, the durian was discovered as the culprit of the foul smell.

Malaysia has tried to solve the transport problem by freezing the fruit before shipping. One of the pioneers of the process was Anna Teo, a former flight attendant who noticed on her travels that durian was not available overseas.

She quit her airline job and experimented with cryogenic freezing techniques in a rented warehouse, hauling her children to durian farms on weekends. She found that freezing not only mitigated the fruit’s odor but also prolonged its shelf life.

Hernan, based in Malaysia, is a major producer and exporter of durian products.

Anna Teo, a former flight attendant, is the chief executive and founder of Hernan.

The mixture for durian pies is prepared.

Today, in a suburb of Kuala Lumpur, Ms. Teo oversees more than 200 employees at the company she founded, Hernan, which exports frozen durian as well as mochi and other durian products.

Thailand, by contrast, has been shipping fresh durian in refrigerated containers for many years. The Thai durian industry is centered in Chanthaburi Province, near the border with Cambodia. During peak harvest season, in May and June, heaping piles of durian are everywhere.

Around 1,000 shipping containers of durian leave packing houses throughout Chanthaburi every day, creating durian traffic jams that rival manic Bangkok intersections. Some containers are loaded onto what the Thai media calls the Durian Train, a cargo railway service that connects Thailand and China using tracks that China built for a high-speed rail.

Because the demand from China is so great, containers often return to Thailand empty — to be quickly reloaded with more China-bound durian.

“Actually, just last night at 3 a.m., I had a durian,” Jiaoling Pan said.

Jiaoling Pan, the chief operating officer of Speed Inter Transport, a company based in Bangkok that uses American-made refrigerated containers to ship durian, said two-thirds of her containers came back empty.

At her packing house, durians are passed under a laser that etches a serial number onto the skin of each fruit. Retailers in China want the ability to trace any bad fruit back to its orchard.

Ms. Pan was born in Nanning, in southern China, and went to Thailand for college. She stayed after falling in love with durian, which she had never seen before. She compared her obsession with durian to an addiction.

“Actually, just last night at 3 a.m., I had a durian,” Ms. Pan said cheerfully in between calls from Chinese customers seeking empty shipping containers.

Around the corner from her business is 888 Platinum Fruits, a company that specializes in durian and is planning to list on the Thai stock exchange this year, a first for the durian industry.

photo

Workers pack durian late into the night in the rush to meet Chinese demand. The durians are also less likely to ripen too quickly — and emit more odor — in the cooler night temperatures.

Natakrit Eamskul is the chief executive of 888 Platinum Fruits.

At the 888 Platinum Fruits packing house in Thailand, workers are busy sorting durian, sending only the highest-quality ones to China.

Natakrit Eamskul, the chief executive of 888 Platinum Fruits, offered a measure of the industry’s growth in Chanthaburi: Two decades ago, the province had 10 durian packing houses — today there are 600.

Across Chanthaburi, the signs of durian wealth are everywhere: modern houses and new hospitals. A shopping mall, inaugurated two years ago, hosted a car show in April.

“When you’re from another province and you arrive here, you come to realize that durian farmers are very, very rich,” said Abhisit Meechai, a car dealer who, on a recent afternoon, was selling MG vehicles, the venerable British brand owned by SAIC Motor, a Chinese automaker.

“Never judge a book by its cover,” Mr. Abhisit said of his customers who are durian farmers. “They come with dirty clothes and dirty hands. But they pay for their cars with cash.”
