READ THE FINE PRINT CAREFULLY

I would just like to point out to be absolutely sure that you want to go on a trip BEFORE you make a deposit. Regardless of the amount of notice you give them, your deposit will not be returned per their rules and regulations, and you may even be responsible for a percentage of the total trip cost depending upon the date you give them notice. Full payment for my tour was required 90 days in advance of the actual tour. Their rules and regulations are seven pages long, and you should read them carefully. My decision to cancel was based on the fragile state of affairs in our country and that in all likelihood another pandemic (bird flu) will be declared forcing vaccinations to fly, which I absolutely would refuse to take.

Date of experience : June 02, 2024

Reply from Tours of Distinction

Per our terms and conditions deposits are non-refundable. This is industry standard. We pride ourselves on the simplicity of our terms and conditions that are 2 pages in length. There is no pandemic/bird-flu and it was your decision to cancel resulting in the loss of your deposit.

Charleston and Savannah Tour

Our tour leader, Janet, was just the best. She did a fabulous job of "herding the cats"! It was not an easy job. The tour overall was not the greatest. Two whole day were spent traveling that only gave us three days to tour. We had no time to walk around the cities for shopping or sight seeing on our own. So we never experienced these cities except for a guided tour on a bus. In Charleston we spent half a day at a tea factory! What a waste of time that was. It was so cold at night, and we were told to go on a boat tour that night! Beaufort was beautiful and the horse drawn carriage ride was wonderful as was the lady giving the tour through Beaufort. But again, there was no time to explore the town and shops on our own. We had a break for lunch and that was it. Savannah - Dinner at Paula Dean's was such a disaster. Cocktails were served after dinner and the food was awful. I had heard how awesome the shopping was in Savannah. No time for that. Did have time to walk on the River Front - at night. Then we had to go to the Julliette Low Birthplace House. That was so boring. So many other great things to see in that historic town. From the windows of a bus, I saw that these were lovely towns, and I will have to go back on my own to experience them.

Date of experience : April 21, 2024

Thank you so much for your feedback Bonnie regarding our Charleston and Savannah trip, we are happy that you liked our tour leader - we take great pride in all our tour leaders who are professional and fun. We know this tour itinerary was jam-packed with a variety of activities that did not include a lot of free time for shopping. In the future, we will consider that aspect. Thank you for your input, it is greatly appreciated. We are delighted that you saw enough of these enchanting cities to want to go back on your own at your own pace - now that you have the lay of the land. Paula Dean's restaurant has always been a hit on our tours because she is a celebrity chef who embodies southern cooking, which may not be for everyone. Thank you for traveling with us and again, thank you for your valuable insights.

A Holocaust Survivor Gets a Vogue Cover

Anna Wintour called Vogue Germany’s latest cover star, 102-year-old Margot Friedländer, a “meaningful” subject.

A woman with white hair wearing a red coat smiles faintly on a cover of Vogue.

By Ruth La Ferla

Margot Friedländer, a 102-year-old Holocaust survivor whose family was murdered at Auschwitz, would seem an unlikely — even radical — choice to front a fashion glossy that customarily features comely models and celebrities. But a weathered and white-haired Ms. Friedländer is the latest cover star of Vogue Germany, a distinction she seems to wear as lightly as the tailored coat she models on the magazine’s July/August issue.

One of the world’s oldest and perhaps best-known Holocaust survivors, Ms. Friedländer is no stranger to fame. She has met with world leaders like Angela Merkel, the former chancellor of Germany, and has rubbed shoulders with A-listers like Helen Mirren.

Ms. Friedländer (nee Bendheim), who lives in Berlin, is a vociferous champion of Holocaust remembrance. She has made it her mission to tour hundreds of schools throughout Germany, urging her young audiences to neither forget past traumas nor cling to the grievances that continue to polarize people.

In the Vogue Germany interview, as in those talks, she expresses concern at the rise of right-wing populism and antisemitism in Germany and throughout the world.

Her multilayered message resonates with Anna Wintour, the editor in chief and global editorial director of Vogue and chief content officer at Condé Nast. While Vogue’s American edition did not feature Ms. Friedländer on its cover and has yet to feature a cover star of her ilk, Ms. Wintour, in an email, called the German Vogue cover “brilliant and inspiring.”

“Margot Friedländer is a wonderful subject, and a meaningful one,” Ms. Wintour said, “given the political currents across Europe.”

People like Ms. Friedländer “are the last living testament to a dark period in history,” said Masha Pearl, the executive director of the Blue Card , an organization in New York that provides financial and emotional assistance to Holocaust survivors across the United States. “To raise awareness for remaining survivors, whose numbers are dwindling, is imperative,” she added.

At 102, Ms. Friedländer has several decades on the eldest American Vogue cover stars, a group that includes the fashion designer Miuccia Prada, who appeared on the magazine’s March cover at 74 this year. But Ms. Friedländer is not the oldest person to appear on a cover of Vogue: Apo Whang-od , a tattoo artist, appeared on the April cover of its Philippine edition at 106-years-old last year.

Ms. Friedländer was 12 when Hitler came to power, and in her early 20s when the Gestapo arrived in 1943 to round up her family, herding her mother onto one of the Nazis’ infamous transports to Auschwitz.

Ms. Friedländer wasn’t home when her family was detained. Soon after, she dyed her hair, started wearing a cross and was hidden for 13 months by anti-Nazi sympathizers whose names she was never permitted to learn, she told The Forward in a 2013 article .

In 1944, she was captured by the Gestapo and deported to the Theresienstadt concentration camp, in what is now the Czech Republic. There, she witnessed, and suffered, Nazi atrocities. She also met Adolf Friedländer and, after liberation in 1945 , married him in a traditional Jewish ceremony. The following year, the couple emigrated to the United States, settling in Queens, New York.

It was only after her husband’s death, in 1997, that Ms. Friedländer thought of mining her life experience for a memoir. While she was writing it, she was approached by a documentary filmmaker, who persuaded her to tell her story on camera — and to return to Berlin in the early 2000s to film the project.

The documentary, “Don’t Call It Heimweh,” came out in 2004, and her book, “‘Try to Make Your Life’: a Jewish Girl Hiding in Nazi Berlin,” in 2008. Two years later, Ms. Friedländer, then in her late 80s, moved back to Berlin.

She has since addressed thousands of people, speaking, as she told Vogue Germany, “in the name of the victims who can no longer speak for themselves.” Her message is not of forgiveness precisely, but of endurance and the loving embrace of humanity.

Ms. Friedländer told Vogue Germany that, since the start of the Israel-Hamas war , she has been asked by many young people whether she supports Israel or Palestine. Her answer is not to take sides. “Don’t look at the things that separate you,” she tells them. “Think of the things that bind you, that bring you together.”

She is grateful that she “made it” and especially thankful, she told Vogue Germany, that she took to heart the advice of her mother, who, as she was being deported by the Nazis, hurriedly left a note for Ms. Friedländer. In it she wrote: “Try to make your life.”

“I am grateful,” Ms. Friedländer said, “that, yes, I have.”

Canadian Stephen Ames in 3-way tie atop Dick's Open leaderboard

Harrington, tanigawa among co-leaders; canada's weir tied for seventh.

Social Sharing

Irishman Padraig Harrington and Ken Tanigawa shot matching 7-under 65s on Saturday to grab a share of the lead after two rounds of action at the Dick's Open in Endicott, N.Y.

At 11-under 133 for the tournament, Harrington and Tanigawa sit atop the leaderboard alongside Canada's Stephen Ames, who was in sole possession of first after the first round at En-Joie Golf Club. Ames fired a 3-under 69 on Saturday.

Harrington was steady throughout the second round, playing bogey-free golf while racking up seven birdies. He finished with a bang, going birdie-birdie-birdie at Nos. 16-18 to become a co-leader.

"I was a little frustrated probably through nine holes today," Harrington said. "My playing partners were going so low, I wasn't holing the putts. Then I don't know if I was patient or things happened to go my way, but it was really nice to come home in 5 under."

Meanwhile, Tanigawa got off to a sizzling start, posting four birdies and an eagle on the front nine. He then eagled the par-5 12th and birdied the par-4 13th before getting tripped up at the next two holes, settling for bogey and double bogey at No. 14 and No. 15, respectively.

Tanigawa recovered with a birdie at the par-4 16th before ending his round with a pair of pars.

"I started out great, I got it to 9 under and just hit a lot of good shots, made the putts to capitalize on those good shots," Tanigawa said. "Overall, very happy, very good round for myself."

Ames finished with five birdies against two bogeys, and he said that battling the heat has been a struggle.

"I'm just barely hanging in there," Ames said. "The hardest thing for me right now is to try to keep my hands dry because I'm actually a no-glove guy. I've been doing a lot of wiping down and actually cooling my hands off in the ice buckets, so it's been helpful."

Bob Estes carded the low round of the day with an 8-under 64 to move 24 spots up the leaderboard and into a tie for fourth with Paul Stankowski (67 on Saturday) and Steve Allan of Australia (69). All three golfers are one shot off the lead.

Ken Duke (66), Canadian Mike Weir (67) and Australia's David Bransdon (67) are tied for seventh at 9-under 135 ahead of a four-way tie for 10th.

Harrington is the defending champion of the event.

Cameron Young shoots rare 59

Cameron Young made a par putt from just inside 10 feet for an 11-under 59 on Saturday in the Travelers Championship, the first sub-60 round on the PGA Tour in nearly four years.

Young made two eagles on par 4s, holing out with wedge from 142 yards on the third hole and driving the 280-yard 15th hole within 4 feet.

It was the 13th sub-60 round since Al Geiberger first shot golf's "magic number" at the 1977 Memphis Classic. Scottie Scheffler had been the most recent at the TPC Boston in 2020 at The Northern Trust.

"I can't say I was expecting it," Young said. "I've been playing better than the results have shown. Waking up this morning, I wasn't really thinking I'm going to be 5 under through four. It was a lot of fun to do."

This didn't even get Young the distinction of owning the course record at the TPC River Highlands. Jim Furyk shot a 58 in 2016 at the Travelers Championship, the lowest round in PGA Tour history.

Young still moved from a tie for 43rd to a tie for 10th, five shots out of the lead.

American male golfer plays his shot from the 17th tee during the third round of the Travelers Championship at TPC River Highlands on June 22, 2024 in Cromwell, Conn.

Jordan Spieth became a footnote in history as the only PGA Tour player to twice play with someone who shot 59. Spieth also was in the group with Justin Thomas when he shot 59 in the opening round of the 2017 Sony Open.

Young was able to lift, clean and place his golf ball in the short grass because of soggy course conditions and the potential of more rain.

He could have gone even lower. After his eagle on the 15th hole, Young hit his tee shot to 7 feet on the par-3 16th and missed the short birdie putt. On the closing hole, needing birdie to tie Furyk's record, his drive settled on the steep face of a fairway bunker and Young was unable to get it on the green.

He still made par for the seventh round of 59 or lower this year on tours around the world.

"To have a day like today where things start going in, and it feels like you're reward for good shots, it leaves me with a good taste in my mouth," Young said.

He finished at 13-under par and was tied with Tom Kim, who was watching some of Young's round on a video screen at the practice range as Kim was getting ready for the start of his third round. Kim shot a 65 and led by one over Scottie Scheffler and Akshay Bhatia.

The other six rounds at 59 or lower this year include Joaquin Niemann on LIV Golf and a record-tying 57 by Cristobal del Solar on the Korn Ferry Tour in Bogota, Colombia.

Taylor Pendrith is the current leader among Canadians as he sits in 17th place at -11. Adam Hadwin is tied for 24th at -8, Corey Conners stands tied for 30th with a -7, Mackenzie Hughes rounds out the Canadians tied for 45th at -4.
