Premium Japan Tour

We had an amazing holiday. Japan was all we had hoped for. The group worked so well, we all got on and became good friends. Shingo, our guide was totally great. He was so pleasant and helpful. His English not brilliant but he did a great job. We felt maybe a little more information on places and sights might have been good. He was constantly helping us all and looking after us. He made great suggestions for meals and always checked up on us all, even when we split into smaller groups for the evening. He went way beyond what he could have done and made everyone feel safe and well looked after. He even helped booking all our onward travel and ensured we were all ok on the day. Wonderful man!! The hotels were nice, if a little small with almost no storage in most of them! Breakfasts were generally very good. We saw and did so much. In fact, we felt sometimes it was a little too much to fit into each day, and either missed some things out or were too rushed, missing stopping and looking at leisure at things and shops etc. Shingo was so patient, even when we caused him to run a little late! Due to distances covered we spent a lot of time travelling which was an interesting experience. Just meant time at destinations was a little short. As Most of us were older we all felt very tired at the end of each day and struggled especially when we had to carry back packs whilst waiting to be reunited with luggage. Dont know what the answer is, if extra days added, then expense goes up. If itinerary cut back, then Interesting sights missed out! Overall, a truly great trip. We enjoyed it all!

Splendours of Japan (9 Days) Tour

Splendours of Japan (9 Days)

This tour was an excellent introduction to the special features of Japan: its history, culture, contemporary developments and aesthetic achievements. Well chosen events and locations meant we were introduced to Shinto and Buddhist traditions, technological advances, sushi making, traditional paper making, types of saki, and a wide range of geographical features from Mount Fuji-san to traditional gardens and samurai temples. Tokyo and Kyoto were focal points, but we also travelled through the Japanese mountains entering an amazing complex of roads and tunnels through steep terrain, tree-covered hillsides and cultural heritage sites. Our tour guide, Kaito, provided a continual commentary of interesting background and explanation. There were numerous high points and no lows.

What people love about tokyo to kyoto tours.

I had a fantastic time on my IntroTravel-Tour through Japan. The itinerary contained a lot of fun activities, great accommodation and awesome food. Even though the itinerary is packed with great activities we still had enough free time to explore the locations on our own and do extra activities that were not included. We were always given recommendations about what to do and where to eat in the area, so we didn’t have to do a lot of research beforehand. Nevertheless there were some activities included that you probably wouldn’t do when traveling on your own without an organized trip, such as the Koyasan temple stay which almost all of us enjoyed the most. It was so special! Thanks our great group leader Anna J.-C. we always travelled smoothly from A to B, never missed a bus or train and could enjoy our journey to the fullest without worrying about anything. Additionally she not only knows her facts but knows loads of fun games to play on the way or in the evenings while sitting together with a drink or two. And her Karaoke is a five star rating ⭐️ I was lucky to travel with a pretty small group of 8 people which made it easy to always do activities together and bond over our experiences. It made the trip extra special. All in all I enjoyed my time in Japan so much. I can definitely recommend this trip, it was worth every penny, and I am looking forward to my next adventure with IntroTravel! All that’s left to say is thank you — Arigatou gozaimasu!
It was a really great experience! Having both guided tours and lots of free time made for a nicely balanced tour where our guide, Toshimi, a very knowledgeable local, would show us parts of Japan and tell us of their significance historically and socially, and also tell us how and where to appreciate Japan during our free time. Our guide loves Japan's history and it was very interesting talking to him about Japan. He also made lots of great recommendations on places to see and eat at, and overall made the whole tour experience very convenient, fun, and informative.

Frequently asked questions

Do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travelers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

When is the best time to travel to Japan?

There’s never a bad time to travel to Japan but the months that see the most travellers are March, April, and May as the weather is mild and the cherry blossoms are in full bloom. The warm weather (with low humidity levels) of September, October, and November are also suitable months to visit Japan – you’ll even be treated to landscapes colored with oranges, reds, and browns for fall. While winter can be cold, this is the best time for snow activities such as skiing, snowboarding, and snow festivals. On the other hand, the summer months see high humidity levels that can leave some travelers uncomfortable.

Do I need a visa to travel to Japan?

Under current restrictions, a visa is required to enter Japan as a tourist. We recommend you apply for your visa no later than one month before your departure date. Please contact your local consulate or embassy for more information.

This page is for general information only and may be subject to change. It is your responsibility to obtain relevant visa and travel information required for entry, departure and travel to each country or region you visit on your trip. You should confirm these with the relevant embassies and/or consulates.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before traveling?

Absolutely. All passengers traveling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

Is Japan safe for LGBTQIA+ travelers?

LGBTQIA+ travelers shouldn’t have any issues visiting Japan with violence, outright hostility or overt discrimination extremely rare. However, Japan’s older generation still holds conservative values when it comes to LGBTQIA+ sexuality and non-binary gender expression, especially those that live in regional areas.

Same-sex relationships are considered legal in some districts (such as Tokyo); however, same-sex marriage hasn’t been legalized yet. Public displays of affection are often frowned upon, regardless of sex, gender, or sexual orientation so keep that in mind when you’re out in public.

For more detailed and up-to-date advice, we recommend visiting  Equaldex  or  ILGA  before you travel.

After breakfast, our Tour Director hosts an orientation and shares some vital information about Tokyo, Japan, and our program. Then, our full-day exploration of Tokyo starts with a visit to Meiji Shrine, dedicated to the deified spirits of the former emperor and his wife and one of the most famous Shinto shrines in Japan. We'll stop at the Imperial Palace Plaza for a photo before we enjoy a sushi-making class with a sushi chef, and eat our sushi for lunch. Our tour continues with a visit to Asakusa Kannon, Tokyo's most spectacular and sacred Buddhist temple. Narrow alleys filled with small shops, restaurants, and tranquil gardens surround the temple. Japan's pastoral countryside unfolds as we depart Tokyo today for Mt. Fuji and Hakone. The main attraction here is majestic Mt. Fuji, a dormant volcano that last erupted almost 300 years ago. The mountain's perfectly shaped cone has inspired artists and poets for centuries. Weather permitting, we'll drive up to the fifth station of the snow capped peak for panoramic vistas. Next, we'll embark on a scenic boat ride on tranquil Lake Ashi before we enjoy a gondola ride for a sweeping view of Hakone and Mt. Fuji. We'll return to Tokyo late this afternoon.

Day 4: Tokyo at Leisure

Today we'll enjoy a scenic drive through the picturesque countryside to the rural region of Shirakawago, a UNESCO World Heritage Site where we'll discover fascinating examples of old steep thatched roof houses. This unique architectural style, harmonized into the magnificent mountain landscape, was developed over 100 years ago to survive the harsh winters. We’ll visit one of these houses and learn more about daily life in this remote area. We'll continue to the village of Gokayama where we can enjoy a demonstration of traditional Japanese papermaking techniques. We'll have an opportunity to make three postcards with Washi paper with the guidance of a local expert. Later this afternoon we'll arrive in the Kanazawa, blending modern living with traditional heritage.

Day 8: Kanazawa – Kyoto

Here we'll see the Nomura Family house's stone lanterns and bridges in the garden as well as the cypress-wood ceiling in the residence. We'll visit Kenrokuen Garden, one of the finest gardens in Japan, with its waterfalls, ponds and charming tea-houses before have lunch at the historic Omicho Market, a busy and colorful market that has some 200 shops selling seafood, vegetables, fruits, flowers, regional specialties and more.. Then, we'll stroll through the charming Higashi Geisha district followed by a gold leaf experience. Afterward, we'll take a train to splendid Kyoto which embodies Japan's rich culture and complex history.

Day 9: Kyoto

tokyo and kyoto tour package

The capital of Japan from 794 to 1868, Kyoto is a world-class gem and true oasis. Our first stop is one of Kyoto's most inspiring sights—the Temple of the Golden Pavilion (Kinkaku-ji). Built on pillars magnificently suspended over a lake, the top two floors of this fabled pavilion covered in gold leaf. Next, we'll visit the famous Arashiyama bamboo grove for a stroll along the forested path with relaxing sunlight dappling the ground. Afterward, we'll enjoy a tea making and tea tasting experience where we'll learn more about Japanese tea traditions. Most recent customer reviews about this trip

"We are in Japan and having a marvellous time! I am so happy we used your company to help us while we were in Tokyo. Everything you provided was perfect.                                                                                                                                                                                  The agent who met us at the airport was lovely and, after 25 hrs of travel, we were grateful for the comfortable and safe drive to the hotel. The hotel accommodations were exactly what we needed and we very much enjoyed our stay. However, the best part of our stay in Tokyo was definitely our guide who we booked as an option. She was exceptional! We were able to see so much in a relatively short period of time, none of which would have been possible on our own. She was totally knowledgeable and her personality was delightful. It was like having a good friend show us around Tokyo. I’m so glad we spent the day together."                  (G.D, US, November 2022)

In each accommodation, a standard adult bed will be offered to them, and a standard seat will be allocated to them in transport. From 0 to 2 years old inclusive, a "baby" rate is offered. This price corresponds to the allocation of a cot in the majority of the accommodation of the chosen circuit. However, we cannot guarantee a baby cot in each accommodation.
  • Pets are not allowed.
  • This programme is subject to change due to circumstances such as weather conditions or any other case of force majeure. Please note that due to the current circumstances, any information mentioned is subject to change or modification.
  • Travel diary by email 3 weeks before departure, and other electronic documents (TokyoSkyTree e-voucher).
  • Paper documents (airport transfer ticket, transportation card, Japan Rail Pass voucher) and Pocket WiFi upon arrival at the airport by our airport assistant.
  • N.B.: no ticket for airport transfers to and from Kansai airport. The reservation is registered in the name of the tour reservation.
  • N.B: In very rare cases, mostly in very high season, steps might be reversed. You will be informed in your mini travel-guide. Thanks for your kind understanding.

Your accommodation :

  • Some hotels may ask you to pay a tourist tax on arrival. This depends on the city and even the hotel, as some do not include it in the booking price. Normally, it is 200¥/night/person (about £1.37/1.93$) but can be slightly higher in 4* hotels. It must be paid in cash at the hotel reception. For traditional Japan Experience accommodations, it is included in the initial tour price.
  • Room size: in Japan, a densely populated country where everything is compact, 3-star luxury hotels are of very good quality but the rooms are often quite narrow (12 to 20m2/129 sq ft to 215 sq ft) depending on the hotel. Please note the size of the single room, between 10 and 16m2 (107sq ft and 172 fq ft). For more comfort, you can choose our luxury 4* accommodation upgrade option. (This option is only valid for the hotel in Tokyo, not for the traditional accommodation in Kyoto).
  • Double room: Rooms for two people in western hotels have 2 single beds (twin rooms) by default, which can usually be joined together. As an option, you can select a double room instead of a twin if you prefer a double bed.
  • Single room: People travelling alone and wishing to book a single room must pay a supplement at the time of booking. The single room supplement is compulsory for orders with an odd number of participants.
  • 3-person room: If there are 3, 5 or more of you and you do not select the single supplement, a triple room will be allocated to you.
  • In the case of a group order (> 5 people), it is possible, depending on hotel availability, that not all members of the group will be accommodated in the same hotel. Nevertheless, we aim to keep you close. The same goes for the traditional house in Kyoto.
  • Names of the hotels : The names given on the site are for information only. In the event of unavailability, an establishment of equivalent standing will be scheduled. Hotels, corresponding to local standards, are given as an indication and may be changed on site for hotels of a similar category.
  • Traditional house in Kyoto: each house has been chosen for its location (transport, shops, temples...) and thus to facilitate your stay. Most of them are either located in the historical district of Gion or on the edge of the Path of Philosophy and the Silver Temple. All lodgings have at least one Japanese tatami room and are equipped with a minimum of 3 beds, either in a single western bed (not double) or on a futon. Do not hesitate to specify in your comments that you want to sleep in a western bed.

Your transport :

  • Flights are not included in this tour . Do not hesitate to contact us if you would like to include flights in your order: Flights in economy class with stopovers or direct flights, eco-premium or business air upgrades, provincial departures or abroad: we will be able to advise you.
  • The tour departure and end dates presented on this page relate to your stay in Japan. You will arrive in Japan via Tokyo (Narita or Haneda airports) and depart from Kansai airport (KIX, not Itami ITM). On departure, you will have to leave the day before Europe and land at 6:30 p.m. at the most to make the most of the airport services of your circuit (reception and transfer to Tokyo). The return takes place the same day, taking into account the favorable time difference, with a minimum take-off time at 9 a.m. Please do not hesitate to consult us for any uncertainty or need for precision in the choice of international flights.
  • If the flights have been purchased by your care without the intervention of Japan Experience, it is necessary to send us by mail 1 month before your departure your flight information (flight number, airport, date and time of arrival) to allow us 'Organize your welcome and airport transfer.
  • Airport Transfers: The shared limousine bus leaves from the airport and stops either in front of your hotel or at a stop within 1-15 minutes walk from your hotel. Our airport assistant in Tokyo will drive you to the platform to pick up the airport transfer. The transfer to the hotel is unassisted. If you wish to be accompanied from the airport to your hotel reception, please choose the option "Accompanied Airport Transfer". This transfer is done in a shared shuttle or bus, with other clients leaving for the same hotel or a hotel close to yours. These transfers leave between 1.5 and 3 hours after your flight's scheduled arrival and stops can be made before your hotel. If you would like a private, non-stop transfer directly after the actual arrival of your flight, feel free to take the "Private Taxi from the Airport" option. Please note: due to the many changes in flight schedules by the airlines, if the airline notifies you of a change in arrival time less than 72 hours before your departure, and if it exceeds 45 minutes, we cannot guarantee your airport shuttle. You will then have to take a taxi at your own expense, requesting a refund from your airline for abusive schedule changes. The same applies to your return journey: 72 hours before your return flight, we cannot change the shuttle schedule. Similarly, you will have to take a taxi booked with the hotel, at your own expense, with reimbursement procedures with the airline company being the only solution. Japan Experience is not responsible for last minute schedule changes. On the way back, the shared shuttle bus leaves from your traditional house or very close by to take you directly to the Kansai KIX airport in 1 hour 30.
  • Included in your tour is a pre-paid transport card with 1500¥ loaded in advance (about £10.30 / 14.54$) (Suica or Pasmo brand); a 3-day Tokyo Metro Pass and a 3-day Kansai Area Pass. These 3 cards should cover a large amount of your journeys. Please note: The metro pass is valid for 72 hours after the first use, until the expiry date printed on the back of the pass on this first use. This pass allows you to use all 13 of Tokyo's underground lines (Tokyo Metro and Toei Subway). The JR regional train lines are only accessible with the pre-payment card, where the journey is charged to you. When the 3-day metro pass and the 1,500¥ pre-paid transport card expire, you will have to pay for all your journeys by reloading your pre-paid transport card (in the ticket machines at all stations and metro stations. A metro ticket in Tokyo costs around £1.71 / 2.42$, depending on the length of the journey). In Kyoto, The 3-day Kansai Area Pass is valid for 3 consecutive or non-consecutive days. The JR lines in the Kansai region are accessible with the prepaid transport card.
  • The Tokyo -> Kyoto Shinkansen will be booked for mid-morning departure to arrive in Kyoto at noon. Seats are reserved, in ordinary class. After booking the tour, it will not be possible to change the schedule of the Shinkansen. If you miss your Shinkansen, your tickets will be lost and cannot be refunded. You will have to buy new tickets at your own expense.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a visa? Do I need vaccinations?

As of October 11, 2022, Japan will open its borders to all Europeans (including the European Union, the United Kingdom and Switzerland) and North Americans (Canada and the United States) without requiring a visa.

Only non-triply vaccinated travelers need a negative PCR test performed within 72 hours prior to departure.

Do I still need a visa to travel to Japan as a tourist?

No, no visa is required for blue countries including all European countries (European Union, United Kingdom and Switzerland included) and North American countries (Canada and United States). List of blue countries: https://www.mofa.go.jp/j_info/visit/visa/short/novisa.html . If you have another nationality, please contact the Japanese embassy in your country of residence to obtain this visa.

Do I still need a PCR or antigen test to go to Japan?

No, if you are triple vaccinated with the vaccines approved by Japan (Pfizer, Moderna, ...exhaustive list here : https://www.mofa.go.jp/ca/fna/page24e_000317.html ) there is no need for any test.

I do not have 3 doses of vaccine or I am not vaccinated against COVID, can I enter Japan?

Proof of Covid vaccines is no longer required for travelers from "blue" countries. Therefore, unvaccinated travelers can enter Japan if they live in blue countries. But a negative PCR test is required at embarkation for travelers who are not vaccinated 3 times.

Is there still a quarantine upon arrival in Japan?

Quarantine and testing on arrival have been eliminated for travelers from blue countries.

Is insurance mandatory?

No, but it is recommended. Japan Experience, as an option of its tours, provides appropriate travel insurance solutions.

What anti-covid measures are still in place in Japan?

The mask must be worn indoors (except in exceptional cases) and in transportation.

What applications should I download before entering Japan?

For tracking the evolution of the coronavirus epidemic, the Japanese government recommends downloading several applications:

MySOS, the health and location tracking app (it will be used to confirm your location, health status and accommodation).

COCOA, the COVID-19 contact confirmation app (this will be used to notify you of possible contact with a COVID-19 positive person).

For more information, please visit: https://www.hco.mhlw.go.jp/manual/pdf-en/summary.pdf

What are the procedures for entry?

Due to the current crisis, we advise you to visit the website of the Japanese embassy in your country to find out about the procedures for entry. Normally, for citizens of the European Union, Switzerland and Canada, you just need a valid passport (for the duration of your stay). A visa is not necessary for a tourist stay of less than 90 days.

How long should a trip to Japan last?

For a first trip to Japan, a period of 2 weeks is optimal, with at least 3 days in Tokyo and 3 days in Kyoto and its region. Don't forget to take some time at the beginning of the trip to get used to the time difference.

Is it safe to travel in Japan? What about solo travellers and children?

Japan is one of the safest countries in the world, ranked in the top 10 by the Global Peace Index. Therefore travelling alone is safe. Women and girls can travel alone without fear of being harassed or solicited in public places. The same goes for children, who can be seen going to school alone in the metro from the age of 7. This can give you an idea of the country's level of safety. Last but not least, Japan is a haven for children: the safety, the amusement parks, the friendly attitude of the population.

How much should I budget for a trip to Japan?

Travelling in Japan is cheaper than travelling in Europe, except for transport: a. By train (that's why a Japan Rail Pass is the best solution) b. By taxi: with the exception of short trips, taxis are expensive. Please note that fruit and vegetables in supermarkets are also significantly more expensive in Japan. For meals and accommodation, there are some interesting options. You can find tasty lunches for €7-8, even in Tokyo. For accommodation, Japan Experience offers traditional accommodation in the major tourist cities of Japan, with good value for money. In short, it is entirely possible to quickly reduce the price of a trip to Japan by adjusting your various budgets (food, accommodation, transport), without sacrificing the quality of your stay! Finally, we advise you to go to Japan with Yen (¥) from our partner Comptoir Change Opera ( https://www.ccopera.com/ ). The vast majority of payments in Japan are still made in cash.

Best of Tokyo and Kyoto

Experience more of Tokyo and Kyoto, Japan’s greatest cities, on the Best of Tokyo and Kyoto tour. Follow in the footsteps of feudal lords and samurai along the route of the ancient Tokaido Highway that once connected these two great cities. To the uninitiated, Tokyo may seem like a whirlwind of people and traffic. Yet, behind the ordered chaos lie remnants of a very different past. Steeped in history and tradition, Kyoto has in many ways been the cradle of Japanese culture. A stroll through Kyoto today is a walk through 11 centuries of Japanese history.

Tour Details

You could easily spend a lifetime exploring Tokyo and never run out of places and things to discover. From “funky” old Ueno and nearby Yanaka with its fine park, museums, and old houses, to the ultra-modern Ginza with its endless department stores … the sheer energy level of Tokyo will sweep you away. And by night, Tokyo really comes into its own. Mazes of blazing neon fill every available nook and cranny of the city’s streets and alleys. Above all, Tokyo is not just a destination, but an experience.

Kyoto is endowed with an almost overwhelming legacy of ancient Buddhist temples, majestic palaces, and gardens of every size and description. For many, just the name of Kyoto conjures up the classic images of Japan: streets of traditional wooden houses, the click-clack of geta (wooden sandals) on the paving stones, geisha in a flourish of brightly colored silks, and a tea master deliberately warming water and making tea.

You will learn the ancient religious traditions of the Japanese, visit the famous “Daibutsu” in Kamakura and see the icon of Japan, Mt. Fuji (weather-permitting). You will also meet a “maiko” (geisha-in-training) face-to-face, climb to the top of a Samurai castle, participate in an authentic tea ceremony, stroll through some of the most beautiful gardens in Japan and much, much more.

We will start at Hase-dera. This temple, originally established in the 8th century houses a famous Kannon statue made from wood and gold leaf, and also has a commanding view of the nearby ocean. Next we will visit Kotokuin, the home of the famous Kamakura Great Buddha. This 40-foot tall bronze statue of Buddha, built in the 13th century is an icon of Japan. Day 3 Tokyo - Tokyo National Museum, Shinjuku and Shibuya; Shinjuku - Walking tour of Kabukicho, Shibuya - Hachiko Statue, Shibuya Crossing

We will start the day by traveling to Ueno Park. Ueno Park is a peaceful, green oasis surrounded by a concrete jungle, where you will find several pleasant temples and shrines, and two excellent museums. During late March and early April, Ueno Park is the best place inTokyo for cherry blossom viewing, and also hosts an excellent flea market. But, best of all, Ueno Park is one of Tokyo’s favorite spots for family outings. The Tokyo National Museum, at the northernmost extremes of the park, is probably the single best museum in Japan, and boasts the largest collection of Japanese art in the world. Displays are rotated every several months from their extensive collection of 90,000 pieces, and the museum has done an excellent job in organizing the displays from prehistoric time to current-day, contemporary art. Here you will see old kimonos, samurai armor, priceless swords, lacquerware, metalwork, pottery, scrolls, screens, ukioye (woodblock prints), calligraphy, ceramics, archaeological finds and more. From there we will travel to the Shinjuku train station. This station is the busiest train station in the world. On average, 4,000,000 people travel through this station every day. From there, we will begin our tour through the Kabukicho entertainment district, popular with the numerous salarymen working in the surrounding office buildings.

After lunch, we will travel the short distance by train to Shibuya. Shibuya is a center for youth fashion and culture, and its streets are the birthplace to many of Japan’s fashion and entertainment trends. We will start our Shibuya visit with the Hachiko statue. According to a famous story, Hachiko the dog waited for his master every day in front of Shibuya Station, and continued to do so for years even after his master had passed away. It is one of Tokyo’s most popular meeting points. Next we will visit the Shibuya Crossing, the busiest pedestrian crossing in the world. The intersection is heavily decorated by neon advertisements and giant video screens and gets flooded by pedestrians each time the crossing light turns green, making it a popular photo and movie filming spot. We will also go to the rooftop observatory of the Magnet by Shibuya 109 building which looks down onto the famous crossing.

From there the guide will take the group back to the ryokan where the day’s tour will end. Or, you can choose to stay in the Shibuya area and tour on your own. The guide will give you suggestions where to visit, as well as maps of the area and transportation suggestions on how to get back to the ryokan.

Travel: 1 3/4 Hours; Walking: Heavy

Here we will tour the Nakamise-dori, Senso-ji Buddhist Temple and the Asakusa Shrine where you will learn about Buddhist and Shinto Japanese religious practices. Senso-ji Temple is the busiest temple in Tokyo, and it’s history dates back to the 7th century. Afterward, we travel by subway to the famous Ginza district, the most expensive real estate in the world where we will first stop for a lunch. After lunch, you will have some free time to wander through the numerous boutiques and department stores. After taking a taxi to the Hinode Pier, we take a relaxing cruise on the Sumida River. Breakfast at the ryokan and lunch at a local restaurant included.

Optional Tour – Yakatabune Dinner Cruise

Optional Tour – Morning Outer Market

$ 75.00 (You must pre-register before arriving in Japan.) We will be visiting the outer market of Tsukiji Market. We will wander through many of the shops selling numerous items needed for Japanese cooking. Many professionals visit Tsukiji Outer market to purchase ingredients and cooking tools. You can see many authentic tools and try various foods easily while browsing the market. After this, we will go to a sushi restaurant near the market for a sushi lunch. After lunch, we will travel the short distance by train to Shibuya. Shibuya is a center for youth fashion and culture, and its streets are the birthplace of many of Japan’s fashion and entertainment trends. After a short explanation of the Shibuya area and the hotspots, the guide will give you a map and allow you to have some free time in Shibuya. Make sure to visit the Shibuya Crossing, the busiest pedestrian crossing in the world. Travel: 1/2 Hours; Walking: Medium

Day 6 Travel to Hakone; Hakone - Hakone Ropeway, Lake Ashi Sightseeing Boats; Travel to Kyoto

After breakfast we will take a day trip to Hakone. Hakone is famous for its natural beauty and the view of nearby Mt. Fuji (weather permitting). We will be taking many different forms of transportation (electric train, funicular, gondola and bus) around Hakone including the Hakone Sightseeing Boats on Lake Ashi. In good weather, passengers aboard the sightseeing cruise can get a fine view of Japan’s most famous peak, Mount Fuji, and enjoy Hakone’s rich scenery reflected on the lake’s calm surface. In the afternoon, you will travel by Shinkansen (bullet train) to the city of Kyoto. You will be escorted from the ryokan to the Tokyo train station by a sending service, met on the platform in Kyoto and escorted to the ryokan in Kyoto. Before leaving Tokyo, you will need to prepare your luggage for transfer to Kyoto. You will need to take an overnight bag with you with enough clothing and other items for two days and one night. Breakfast at the ryokan and lunch at a local restaurant is included.

Travel: 3 Hours; Walking: Light

Day 7 Kyoto - Nijo Castle, Kinkakuji (Golden Pavilion), Nishikikoji Market, Tea Ceremony

After breakfast, we will start the day at the Nijo Castle. Built in 1603, it was the Kyoto home of Tokugawa Ieayasu, the first Tokugawa Shogun. The ostentatious style of construction was intended as a demonstration of Ieyasu’s prestige, and to signal the demise of the emperor’s power. The finest artists of the day filled the castle with delicate transom woodcarvings and paintings by the Kano School on sliding doors. One of the castle’s most intriguing features is the so-called “nightingale” floors. To protect the Shogun from real or imagined enemies, these floorboards creak when stepped on. Next we will visit Kinkaku-ji. Kinkaku-ji, also known as the Golden Pavilion, is one of Kyoto’s, as well as Japan’s, most recognizable attractions. The gleaming building covered in gold leaf seems to float on the aptly named Mirror Pond, especially on a sunny day. After lunch you will have some free time at Nishiki Koji. Nishiki Koji is a narrow, five block long shopping street lined by more than one hundred shops and restaurants. Known as “Kyoto’s Kitchen”, this lively retail market specializes in all things food related, like fresh seafood, produce, knives and cookware, and is a great place to find seasonal foods and Kyoto specialties, such as Japanese sweets, pickles, dried seafood and sushi. Following this free time, we will participate in an authentic tea ceremony. The regimented discipline of the tea ceremony has been practiced for more than 400 years, and at one time was considered mandatory for Samurai as an aid to train the mind. After the tea ceremony, we will return to the ryokan. Breakfast at the ryokan and lunch at a local restaurant included.

Travel: 1 Hour; Walking: Heavy

Day 8 Fushimi - Fushimi Inari Shrine; Kyoto - Higasihiyama District, Yasaka Shrine, Gion Geisha District

After breakfast, we are off by train to the nearby city of Fushimi, one of the largest sake producing regions of Japan. Here we will visit the Fushimi Inari shrine. This Shinto Shrine, established in the 8th century, is famous for the long tunnels of vermilion torii gates straddling a network of trails leading to the top of the heavily forested Mt. Inari. We will then travel to the Higashiyama District. This area of narrow, cobblestone alleys with its temples, shrines, numerous shops and restaurants is truly enjoyable and relaxing. We will stop for lunch in the Higashiyama District. We will then visit the Yasaka Shrine, also known as the Gion Shrine. This shrine, built over 1350 years ago, is one of the most famous shrines in Kyoto. The shrine’s main hall combines the honden (inner sanctuary) and haiden (offering hall) into a single building. Next, we will walk to the famous Gion Geisha District. Here, you will see where the Geiko (in Kyoto they call themselves Geiko, not Geisha) and Maiko live and work. You may even see one on their way to one of their appointments. We will return to the hotel after some free time in the Gion District. Breakfast at the ryokan and lunch at a local Japanese restaurant are included.

Day 9 Arashiyama - Tenryu-ji, Arashiyama Bamboo Forest, Shojin-ryori (Buddhist Vegetarian) lunch, Okachi Sanso, Gioji Temple

After breakfast, we travel by train to the nearby town of Arashiyama. Once a favorite relaxation spot of the Emperors, Arashiyama is located on the hillsides bordering the banks of the Katsura River northwest of Kyoto. We will first visit the bamboo gardens which Arashiyama is famous for, located just outside the north gate of Tenryu-ji. This dense bamboo forest, with its rows upon rows of long, ringed, smooth stems, provide a feeling of composure and tranquility. The sound of the wind blowing through the bamboo, the stems knocking against each other and the rustling of the leaves is revered in Japan. Next, we visit Tenryuji Temple. Tenryu-ji is part of the Rinzai school of Zen Buddhism, and was originally built in 1339 on the former site of Emperor Go-Daigo’s villa. A priest had dreamt of a dragon rising from the nearby river, hence the name which means “Heavenly Dragon”. The garden represents a transition between earlier pond gardens and the karesansui (dry landscape) gardens that later became popular in Zen temples. The focus of the garden is a pond that lies at the base of the hills rising to Mount Arashi, which is incorporated into the design of the garden in the earliest known example of borrowed scenery (shakkei). At the far end of the pond are two rock groupings. These rock groupings are orientated on a vertical alignment, which was a departure from the horizontal alignments in earlier gardens. After finishing the tour of the temple and garden, we will enjoy a Shojin-ryori lunch (Buddhist vegetarian diet with no garlic or onions) at the temple. Following lunch we will visit the Okochi Sanso and Gioji Temple. Okochi Sanso is the former villa of the popular Japanese actor Okochi Denjiro. The property consists of the living quarters, several gardens and tea houses. Gioji Temple, with its thatched roof gates and moss garden is a tranquil paradise. Later in the afternoon, we will return to Kyoto by train. Breakfast at the hotel and lunch is included.

Travel: 2 Hours; Walking: Heavy

Day 10 Himeji - Himeji Castle, Kokoen Garden

We will take a Shinkansen (bullet train) to the nearby city of Himeji. Himeji Castle, also known as White Heron Castle due to its elegant, white appearance, is widely considered Japan’s most spectacular castle for its imposing size and beauty and its well preserved, complex castle grounds. The castle is both a national treasure and a world heritage site. Unlike many other Japanese castles, it was never destroyed by war, earthquake or fire and survives to this day as one of the country’s twelve original castles. The castle recently underwent extensive renovation over several years and was fully re-opened to the public in March 2015. Himeji Castle lies at a strategic point along the western approach to the former capital city of Kyoto. The first fortifications built on the site were completed in the 1400s, and were gradually enlarged over the centuries by the various clans who ruled over the region. The castle complex as it survives today is over 400 years old and was completed in 1609. It comprises over eighty buildings spread across multiple baileys, which are connected by a series of gates and winding paths. After touring the castle, we will visit the nearby Kokoen Garden. Kokoen is a relatively recently constructed Japanese style garden, which was opened in 1992 on the former site of of the feudal lord’s west residence (Nishi-Oyashiki). It consists of nine separate, walled gardens designed in various styles of the Edo Period. Among the gardens are the garden of the lord’s residence which features a pond with a waterfall, a tea garden where visitors can enjoy green tea in a tea ceremony house, a pine tree garden, a bamboo garden and a flower garden. Late in the afternoon we will return to Kyoto by Shinkansen (bullet train). Breakfast at the ryokan and lunch at a local restaurant is included.

Day 11 Kyoto - Free Morning and Afternoon, Optional tour to Nara, Meet a Maiko Session, Sayonara Dinner

Today is a free day. In the late afternoon, we will meet back at the ryokan and travel to the Gion Geisha district. Here, in a teahouse, we will attend a Meet a Maiko session. (A Maiko is a Geisha in training.) She will perform a short dance, answer any of your questions and pose for pictures with you. After this we will have a walking tour of the Gion Geisha district. Here you will see where the Geisha and Maiko live and work. We may even see one on their way to their appointments. After this we will enjoy our Sayonara Dinner. Breakfast at the ryokan and dinner at a local Japanese restaurant included.

Optional Tour – Nara

$115 (or 15,000 Yen in Japan) We will begin the day traveling by train to the nearby city of Nara. Nara was the original capital of Japan in the 8th century before it was moved to Kyoto. We will start our tour of Nara by walking through the heavily forested Nara Park. Here, we will find numerous temples and shrines hidden among the trees. Along the way, you can also fee the famous Nara deer. They have been since the 7th century, and roam freely protected by Buddhist traditions. At the far end of Nara Park, we will find Todaiji. Originally built in 752, the main hall is the world’s largest wooden building, despite the fact that the current building, built in 1692, is only two-thirds the size of the original building. Inside the building is Japan’s largest bronze statue of Buddha (it is almost 50 feet tall). We will finish our tour of Nara at Kofukuji temple. Kofukuji temple was the family temple of the Fujiwara family, one of the most powerful families in Japan during the Heian period. This temple was created in 710, the same year Nara was made the capital of Japan. At its height during the reign of the Fujiwara family, there were more than 150 buildings on the temple grounds.

Day 12 Sayonara

It’s time to say “sayonara” (goodbye). You will be escorted to the Kyoto train station, and then take the Express train on your own to the Kansai International Airport, just outside Osaka. Breakfast at the ryokan is included.

While I have traveled independently for many years, Japan is a country where the guided tour is necessary (especially your first visit), I would never have been able to navigate the variety of places we visited efficiently nor the historical significance to what we were seeing. I appreciate Samurai Tours ability to help you see a lot in a short period of time and their knowledge and courtesy. Thank you for an enjoyable experience.

How much time should you spend in Tokyo and Kyoto?

A crucial question you must ask yourself is how much time to allot to each city. For most people, the ideal breakdown is 2 full days in Tokyo and 4 full days in Kyoto (travel days are not considered full days). If you are more interested in modern Japan, then you could spend 3 days in Tokyo and 3 in Kyoto. For most people, Kyoto is more relaxing and more manageable, so spending more time in Kyoto results in a more enjoyable vacation.

Day 3: Tokyo: Traditional Tokyo On your second full day in Tokyo, you’ll explore the traditional east side of the city. See our full Tokyo Two-Day Itinerary for details.

To-ji Temple, Kyoto / UNESCO WHC

Day 4: Travel to Kyoto, Explore Downtown Kyoto Take the shinkansen from Tokyo to Kyoto. The journey takes around 2.5 hours. For details, see our How to Travel from Tokyo to Kyoto page. You’ll probably have some time after arriving in Kyoto to explore. We recommend checking out the downtown area on this day.

Day 5: Kyoto: Southern Higashiyama On your first full day in Kyoto, you’ll explore the temple-packed Southern Higashiyama area. See our full Kyoto Three-Day Itinerary for details.

Day 6: Kyoto: Arashiyama On your second full day in Kyoto, travel west to the Arashiyama district, which is home to the famous Arashiyama Bamboo Grove. See our full Kyoto Three-Day Itinerary for details.

Day 9: Leave Japan Return to Narita or Haneda airport and fly home. See our Tokyo Airport Transport page for transport details.

Important Note on Leaving Kyoto and Flying Out of Tokyo the Same Day

If your departure from Tokyo is after 3pm, you do not have to spend your last night in Tokyo; you can leave from Kyoto and still make your flight. As a rule, to travel from Kyoto to Narita takes around 4 hours, with transfers. The best way is to take a Hikari or Nozomi shinkansen to Shinagawa Station in Tokyo and transfer to the Narita Express there (if you change at Tokyo Station, you have to walk VERY far to reach the Narita Express platforms).

If you you’re flying out of Haneda Airport, allow about 3.5 hours travel time from Kyoto to Haneda. The best way is a Hikari or Nozomi shinkansen to Shinagawa Station in Tokyo and then the Keikyu Line to Haneda.

Half Day Tokyo Edo Tour

Travel around Tokyo using the city's sophisticated and efficient subway and train lines together with your private guide to visit some of Tokyo's main sites. Start the tour with a visit to Sensoji Temple, Tokyo's oldest Buddhist temple. After visiting the temple grounds, stroll along Nakamise shopping street to look for souvenirs. Then travel to the Imperial Palace East Gardens, a part of the inner palace area. The palace itself is not open to the public as it is the residence of the emperor, but you can walk through the garden grounds to see the moats, remains of Edo castle and gardens. Next, visit either Ginza or Tsukiji Outer Fish Market. Your guide will then say goodbye so you can continue exploring these areas at your own pace.

Evening Tokyo Gourmet Food Tour

Day at leisure to explore Tokyo at your own pace.

Tonight, go on a evening food tour. Japanese cuisine is not only the refined sushi and tempura, but it has a wide range of equally delicious, more casual dishes that the locals love. Discover these delicacies with a local guide.

Today's tour will take you to a famous foodie spot not too far from your hotel. You will be sure to try delicious yakitori, chicken grilled on skewers and served either with salt or "tare", a kind of sweet soy-based sauce. Most yakitori restaurants also serve a selection of other Japanese comfort dishes.

Let your guide know if anything interests you. Depending on where you are, other Japanese delights await you this evening. Sashimi, monjayaki or okonomiyaki, crispy Japanese fried chicken, braised vegetables, and seafood are among the dishes you might try.

One drink is included as well as a set food budget but be advised that once you exceed this, you will need to cover the bill.

Tokyo to Hakone

This morning, leave Tokyo behind as you journey to Hakone, the gateway to Mt Fuji and surrounding national park. Your local guide will accompany you on the journey there and assist with forwarding your luggage to your destination after Hakone. Then you will travel together to Hakone and have the chance to explore the Hakone "Loop". The loop can be done in clockwise or anti-clockwise order and your guide will decide the best course depending on where you are staying tonight, the season, and how busy Hakone is when you visit.

The loop typically includes a journey up to the Gora area to ride the Hakone Ropeway to Owakudani volcano crater, where you can try the tasty black eggs boiled in water bubbling up from within the volcano itself. Also included in the day's arrangements is a cruise across Lake Ashi. On clear weather days, you may be able to see Mt. Fuji peeping over the mountains (visibility is best from November to March).

At the end of the tour your guide will drop you off at your luxury ryokan, Gora Kaden, located on the grounds of Kan'in-no-miya Villa, the former summer villa of a member of the Imperial Family. Enjoy the private hot spring bath in your room and the authentic kaiseki cuisine meals prepared with seasonal ingredients.

Full Day Kyoto Gold Highlights Tour

Start your full day tour at one of Kyoto’s most celebrated sites, the world-famous Fushimi Inari Shrine. The shrine complex spans over the entire Mt. Inari (233m/765ft) and thousands of bright red torii gates line the mountain trail. You will visit the main shrine hall and the famed vermillion gate tunnel.

Next, travel to central Kyoto to visit Sanjusangendo Temple, the longest wooden structure in Japan. Inside, you will find 1001 statues of Kannon, the Buddhist saint of Mercy.

Then visit another celebrated site, Kiyomizu-dera Temple. This temple is older than Kyoto as the capital of Japan and is famous for its wooden platform stage, the Kiyomizu Butai. The massive stage was constructed out of wood and joints – no nails. At four story’s high, it was once a popular wish-making spot.

In the afternoon visit Kinkakuji Temple, a favorite to millions of visitors each year. You will quickly see why this jewel set into the northern hills is one of the most visited sites in Japan, it is covered in real gold leaf and vibrant at any time of year no matter the weather.

Continue to Kintano-tenmangu, a remarkable shrine to scholarship that was built to appease the spirit of an angry ghost. The shrine’s surrounding entertainment district was first built after a fire in 1444, when a large section of the temple had to be rebuilt, and the remaining timber was used to construct 7 tea houses that became the first ‘flower town’ or Geisha district in Kyoto.

Explore the Kamishichiken district, every bit as charming as its more touristy cousin the Gion district, with the added bonuses of fewer crowds and excellent photo opportunities.

Half Day Kyoto Arashiyama Tour

Arashiyama is a district in the western outskirts of Kyoto, the area has been a popular destination since the Heian Period (794-1185), when nobles would enjoy its natural setting.

Visit the Okochi Mountain Villa to see the several beautiful gardens and buildings, including living quarters, tea houses and a zen meditation hall. Here you will enjoy some matcha green tea with a snack.

Next, take a walk through Arashiyama’s famous bamboo groves and continue the tour to Nonomiya Shrine and Tenryuji Temple, one of Kyoto's five great Zen temples and UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Customizable Itinerary

Tokyo – your adventure begins.

With your plane touching down at Narita International Airport in the early morning, there is plenty of daylight to get to know Japan’s capital. Your expert guide meets you at baggage claim and transfers you to central Tokyo.

Arriving in the city, you board Tokyo’s famous (and efficient) metro system to Harajuku, the center of the latest fashion trends and Japanese cosplay. Just outside the station, you are bound to see young men and women dressed in unique and exciting ways, or perhaps even a local band performing at the edge of Yoyogi Park. While there, enjoy Yoyogi Park’s natural beauty. Other sites of interest include Yoyogi National Stadium, which hosted many of the events during the 1964 Summer Olympics.

Just a quick metro ride away from Harajuku is Akihabara, regarded as a Mecca for fans of Japanese anime and video games. Wandering through the district’s back alleys, you can find hundreds of stores selling everything from manga comics to electrical components for obsolete computers.

In the late afternoon, you arrive in the Ginza, Tokyo’s premier shopping district. From high-class bags at Hermes to all manner of stationary supplies at Ito-Ya, just about anything can be found along the Ginza’s main boulevard. For technology lovers, visit the Sony Showroom, where the company displays its latest inventions not yet released in the West.

Every day, over 3,640,000 commuters travel through Shinjuku Station, making it the busiest in the world. Get caught up in the energy as you explore Japan’s urban core. Depending on your budget, your guide can arrange a fine dining experience at a Michelin star restaurant, or a laid back meal at an izakaya , a traditional Japanese restaurant that offers a variety of small comfort food dishes paired with alcohol.

If you’re not feeling too tired after dinner, soak in Shinjuku’s neon glory with a stroll through the district. Or perhaps stop at a pachinko parlor, where the loud sound and flashing lights rival any casino in Las Vegas.

When you decide to turn in, your guide sees you to your hotel.

What's Included:

Tokyo – Ancient Traditions

Today, you experience another one of Tokyo’s many faces. In the early morning, even before millions of commuters pour into Tokyo’s metro system, your guide takes you to Asakusa for a private tour of Senso-ji Temple. Once a modest shrine erected by fishermen over 1,000 years ago, Senso-ji is now one of Tokyo’s most magnificent temples. Arriving early in the day means avoiding the crowds, and the ability to soak in the peace and serenity that Buddhist temples are meant to inspire.

Along with Buddhism, Shinto is Japan’s other primary religion. In Tokyo, no Shinto shrine is greater than Meiji Shrine, dedicated to the spirit of Japan’s first modern emperor. Situated in the middle of Meiji Park, the shrine is dutifully attended by Shinto priests, whose ceremonies still provide worship to Emperor Meiji. Even if the crowds are a bit heavier here, you notice that the shrine retains its peaceful tranquility. Besides chirping birds, it is likely that the only other thing you hear is the sound of visitors clapping their hands as they give prayers at the main altar.

Around lunchtime, you board an express train at Tokyo Station heading to Nikko, the burial place of the shoguns during the Edo Period (1603-1868). During the train ride, enjoy a bento box lunch as Tokyo’s concrete metropolis melts away into tree covered valleys and hills. There is much to see from your window as the two-hour journey flies by.

From the train station, it is a short walk to the Toshogu , the main shrine which marks the burial place of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the first shogun who led a united Japan in the early 17th-century. It is easy to miss the actual burial site, your eyes glued to the ornate carvings and lavish decoration all around you.

In the late afternoon, board your train back to Tokyo for a sushi feast. Your guide arranges a dinner at one of Tokyo’s finest sushi restaurants. While eating, you discover that each piece carries the faintest taste of the sea, a hallmark of fine Japanese sushi.

Tokyo to Mt. Fuji to Tokyo – Natural Beauty

This morning, your guide picks you up from your hotel. Boarding a private minivan, you leave Tokyo behind to travel to Hakone, a 90-minute journey. Before the trip is half over, though, you begin to see Mt. Fuji in the distance, its snow covered peak serving as your beacon throughout the day.

Arriving in Hakone, what to do and where to go is completely up to you. If you are an art lover, the Hakone Open Air Museum has one of Japan’s largest collections of Picassos in the country. If you’re looking for a little rest and relaxation, the city’s various onsen baths are an excellent way to relieve sore muscles.

After lunch in Hakone, your van takes you to Mt. Fuji. Your first stop is Yamamiya Sengen Shrine; a Shinto shrine erected at the foot of Mt. Fuji. Providing excellent views of the mountain, the shrine is still home to Shinto priests who use the shrine as a way to offer prayers to the mountain’s spirit.

From the shrine, your bus winds up the curvy road leading to Mt. Fuji’s 5th Station. A little more than halfway up the mountain, the 5th Station is the starting point for the majority of men, women, and even children who make the eight-hour climb to the summit every summer. The 5th Station is an excellent place to learn more about Mt. Fuji, buy a souvenir, or take a nature walk that reveals stunning views of the Fuji Five Lakes region.

In the late afternoon, your van takes you back to Tokyo. Dinner this evening is ramen, Japan’s famous hearty noodle dish that makes for a delicious way to end your day of adventure.

Tokyo to Kyoto – From the Future into the Past

This morning, you are up with the sun to see one of the most famous sights in Tokyo: The Tsukiji Fish Market. The smell of the sea hangs in the air as your guide takes you through many stalls that sell seafood to Tokyo’s finest restaurants. Watch expert fishmongers expertly prepare fish for sale, and witness the morning tuna auction. At the end of your visit, have a sushi breakfast at one of the city’s best sushi restaurants.

Full of sushi, relax on the shinkansen towards Kyoto, Japan’s capital until 1868. The Shinkansen is one of the fastest trains in the world and delivers you to Kyoto’s city center in just over two hours.

You arrive in Kyoto in the late morning. Going to your hotel or ryokan, there is time to relax before visiting a Zen Buddhist garden. There you have lunch with a monk who will teach you about Zen Buddhism and the deeper meaning behind the rock garden’s arrangement.

Your first evening in Kyoto is a treat like no other. For hundreds of years, the women who choose to become geisha commit themselves to an ancient set of cultural practices. A superb craft, you have the opportunity to witness these rituals first hand at a geisha house in the Gion District. Watch geisha perform the tea ceremony and music, traditions that have been handed down for generations. At the end of the performance, the geisha serve you a traditional Japanese dinner.

Kyoto – A Day of Religion and Cuisine

After breakfast at the hotel, your day begins early when your guide takes you by private car to Kinkaku-ji, the Temple of the Golden Pavilion. The temple is most beautiful right after dawn when the morning’s soft light reflects off its gold leaf surface. Arriving early also ensures that you miss the crowds that flock daily to this amazing attraction.

Kinkaku-ji may be Kyoto’s most spectacular shrine, but Kyomizu-dera provides Kyoto’s most stunning vista. Atop Otowa Mountain, Kyomizu-dera overlooks Kyoto and the surrounding valley. After soaking in the balcony’s views, your guide takes you on a tour of the temple complex, explaining how the tenants of Buddhism are expressed throughout this stunning structure.

This evening has what is likely the most memorable meal on the trip. Kaiseki ryori is a traditional Japanese cuisine perfected in Kyoto. Once served to the emperors who inhabited Kyoto’s Imperial Palace, kaiseki ryori is defined by a series of small, artistic dishes that highlight the region’s freshest meats and vegetables. This is definitely a meal where you will want to have your camera ready to take pictures.

Kyoto to Nara to Kyoto – Harmony Between Man and Nature

Your day begins with a brief car ride to Arashiyama, a natural setting for Kyoto cherry blossoms in the spring and changing foliage in the fall. You arrive before the other visitors and walk the 200-meter bamboo path towards Tenryu-ji, the greatest of Kyoto’s five Zen Buddhist temples. Though rebuilt many times in its 700-year history, the surrounding gardens have been maintained in their original form. Looking out over the still waters and rustling plants, it is easy to take your mind back into the past.

In late morning board an express train to Nara, Japan’s first capital in the 8th-century. You arrive in Nara to see a modern looking town, but just a few steps away from Nara Station, you discover the city’s grandeur. In Nara Park, sacred deer freely roam the grounds. Having lived around people for generations, they are quite tame.

Your guide takes you to Todai-ji, the largest wooden building in the world. Stepping up to the temple complex, you begin to see the dark figure within. Inside the temple sits a 49-foot bronze Buddha, the largest in Japan. When built 1,200 years ago, the Buddha consumed an entire year’s worth of Japan’s bronze production. Even 1,200 years later, this feat is still an architectural marvel able to humble all visitors who stand before it.

Beyond the Buddha, there is still much to see at Todai-ji. Your guide leads you through a series of passageways into the temple museum, where artifacts spanning the temple’s history are on display.

The rest of your time in Nara is up to you. Admire 1,000-year-old scrolls in the Nara National Museum, or pick up a souvenir at Nara’s famed shopping street. During your trip back to Kyoto, your guide presents you a variety of options for dinner.

Kyoto to Osaka – Ancient to Modern

On your last morning in Kyoto, you take a walk up to Fushimi-Inari Shrine. During this walk, you pass under 2,000 bright red torii gates, a Shinto symbol that signifies one is entering a sacred space. During the walk, simply enjoy the peaceful tranquility. Your guide, however, is happy to spend the time teaching you about the shrine’s history and spiritual significance.

Arriving at the shrine, you are greeted by many statues of kitsune , foxes, and more stunning view of Kyoto. There is ample time to walk around the lush gardens. Perfect for taking pictures, the shrine is a peaceful oasis in the middle of modern Kyoto.

In late morning, board a private van for the short ride to Osaka. After arriving, take an hour’s rest in your hotel room before heading out for an amazing afternoon and a night on the town.

Your first stop is the Tempozan Ferris Wheel. Boarding your private compartment, the wheel slowly raises you to nearly 370 feet. With every surface made of glass, nothing stands between you and a perfect view of the city.

Osaka is world famous for its okonomiyaki , a savory pancake dish which incorporates cabbage, seafood, and thinly sliced pork belly. A rich treat, it goes down best with a pint (or two) of ice-cold Japanese beer.

Osaka - Bright Lights Big City

After breakfast, get to know another side of Osaka through a visit to the Osaka Aquarium. Home to many unique species, the star attraction is the Whale Shark, the largest fish currently kept in captivity. Other highlights include multiple tanks featuring tropical fish, along with seal and penguin habitats.

For your last afternoon in Japan, there are multiple things for you to do. At Osaka Castle, you can learn about the city’s samurai history. No trip to Osaka would be complete, though, without a walking tour of Dotonbori, the chaotic shopping street where at night you are bathed in neon light from every angle.

Wander the endless stores before ‘eating oneself to ruin’ at one of the district’s many restaurants. For a unique dining experience, try puffer fish at Zuboraya. With chefs having to pass strict examinations to prepare this possibly poisonous seafood, be rest assured that this dining experience is not your last.

Osaka – So Much More to See

When you awake on your final morning in Japan, you won’t believe that only nine days have passed since you arrived. With souvenirs to take with you, and memories to last a lifetime, your guide sees you aboard a train to Kansai International Airport where your flight home awaits you.

Even on the ride to the airport, you feel compelled to return to Japan. Though you have done so much in just over a week, there is still so much more to see.

Trip Highlights

  • Private tour of Tsukiji Fish Market followed by a fresh sushi breakfast
  • Experience Nikko, a UNESCO World Heritage Site famous for its architectural and decorative masterpieces
  • Visit Hakone and Mt. Fuji’s 5th Station, the gateway to climbing the mountain
  • Ride the famous Shinkansen, the world-famous high-speed bullet train
  • Take part in a traditional geisha ceremony in Kyoto, dining upon cuisine once reserved for the Imperial Court

Detailed Description

Japan has so much to offer the modern traveler. A country roughly the size of California, a short trip by the Shinkansen reveals completely new sights and adventures. In this 9-day tour, do as much as possible, but have the time to fully appreciate the experience.

Your time in Japan begins in Tokyo, Japan’s capital and the largest city in the world. For two days, you mix modern and ancient as you tour high-tech Akihabara before visiting Japan’s ancient samurai tombs. Get lost in the whirlwind of Shibuya, just steps away from the most serene parks in the country.

Your time in Tokyo includes side trips to Mt. Fuji and Nikko, two locations that are both deeply beautiful and spiritually important to Japan’s native religion, Shinto. These trips are the perfect opportunity to reflect on your time in the big city, as greater things await you.

In Kyoto, learn all about Japan’s traditions through a geisha ceremony, and dine on cuisine once reserved for the Imperial Court. Your guide helps you avoid the crowds as you visit some of the country’s most renowned cultural treasures. Your time in Kyoto includes a day trip to Nara, Japan’s capital in the 8th-century. Feel humble in the presence of the Daibutsu , the largest bronze Buddha in Japan, before seeing some of the finest examples of Japanese art.

Your tour ends in Osaka, Japan’s center of merchant life. In this lively city, indulge in some of Japan’s finest food and drink, and take in local attractions such as Osaka Aquarium and the city’s shopping district.

A tour perfect for couples or families, it is best taken in spring or fall, when Japan’s weather is nearly perfect. Extending the tour is possible, along with customizing any of the events described in the detailed itinerary.

An 8-Day Cycling Adventure From Tokyo to Kyoto

I pulled into the tiny hamlet of Hirase, in Japan ’s Gifu prefecture, at the peak of the day’s heat. I’d just climbed several thousand feet through Hakusan National Park, on a twisting, waterfall-lined road, before eventually descending into the shimmering fantasy landscape of Shirakawa-go, an almost Tolkien-esque small village—and UNESCO heritage site —comprised of centuries-old thatched, peaked-roof farmhouses in the gassho-zukuri style. Replenishing myself with a black-sesame ice cream cone, I made the last push towards my destination. My cycling computer eventually told me “destination reached,” but all I could see was a succession of closed businesses lining a small street. Seeking shade, I flopped against a security gate.

Gearing up to text the ride leader that I was lost, I suddenly saw, in the distance, two cyclists from my group. One, a Dane living in London and a veteran of the trip, escorted me precisely 100 feet to the entrance of a traditional house, half hidden from the street by trees. This was Tosuke-no-yu Fujiya , a traditional ryokan with hot springs; a lacquered-wood and shoji -screen retreat that resists the march of time (and the all-seeing eye of Google Maps.) We were too early for check-in, so we made our way, clad in cycling kit, towards the nearby Shō River. Scrambling barefoot across rocks, we plunged into the clear, bracing mountain water.

I have often found, on a trip, that it is not the perfectly scripted moment that endures in the memory, but that juncture where something has gone awry. Something that might require a touch of fortitude, of inventiveness—of halting conversation with locals—to resolve. Something that momentarily takes us out of our comfort zone. “Only through shadows can we see the beauty of a lighted room,” writes Junichiro Tanizaki in his classic In Praise of Shadows . Something of that spirit exists in RAID Cycling , the outfitter with which I have booked an eight-day expedition, by bike, from Tokyo to Kyoto . “I like it a little more rough around the edges,” as Brad Sauber, RAID’s founder and a longtime participant in the world of luxury bike trips, describes the ride. “I like to bring people to really remote areas—maybe there aren’t five-star hotels. Or maybe some might be, but I don’t want five nights of five-star hotels.”

Biking across the Wagatani Suspension Bridge in the Ishikawa Prefecture

Two decades ago, Sauber was in Japan, on his honeymoon , when inspiration struck, through the window of the Shinkansen. “I remember seeing these amazing little roads, with hardly any traffic,” he says. “I thought, there’s gotta be a way to ride a bike here.” Working at the time for Rapha Travel, the adventure division of the noted clothing brand, he spent 15 days driving the country’s backroads, stitching together a pioneering long-distance cycling route, stumbling upon little-known hotels like the ryokan in Hirase. Even keen cyclists in Japan thought the idea of a multi-day trip from Tokyo to Kyoto “was crazy,” he says. Undaunted, he pushed forward, launching the trip in 2015. Just finding willing hotels was a challenge. “The concept of showing up with 15 foreigners on bikes, with four or five vehicles, just completely blew their minds,” he says.

Sauber launched RAID after Rapha closed its travel division in 2018. His new Japan trips were just up and running when the pandemic struck, forcing a three-year suspension. I am on only the second outing after the country’s reopening, joined by some 16 other cyclists, as well as RAID’s four-person Japanese crew, and Sauber himself. After a night in Tokyo’s Shibuya neighborhood, we take a train to Sumiecho, a suburban area in Tokyo where, in one of the country’s pristine public restrooms—and before its bemused attendant—we change into our cycling kit.

From here, we head into the mountains of Higashi-Ōme. A few things become apparent immediately. One, Japanese roads are top notch. Cyclists typically warn those behind them of the presence of potholes, or random debris in the road; our group had little to do. The one piece of trash I saw in the road stood out for its shocking indelicacy. Second, Japanese drivers are polite—not as polite as Japanese shopkeepers, but generally solicitous of cyclists (still, I recommend using a taillight like Garmin’s Varia , which warns of cars approaching from behind—useful in the country’s many dim tunnels). Third, on 90-degree-plus days, Japanese vending machines—which one finds in the most unexpected places—are your friend.

The days went by in a flurry of impressions, gleaned over the handlebars. There was the babble of snow monkeys in the trees near Kofu (a town that grows those extravagantly expensive fruits that are given as gifts). There were elegantly spired, tightly-packed Buddhist cemeteries in the midst of almost iridescent green rice paddies. There were mountain peaks densely packed with cypress and marked by absolute stillness, save for the piercing cries of Japanese Golden Eagles. There were restorative bowls of soba noodles at family-run roadside restaurants, elaborate kaiseki meals eaten wearing summer yukata robes, and Japanese snacks at the RAID rest stops. There were “shortcuts” down eerily abandoned country roads. There were memorable stays in new-to-me cities like Takayama (dubbed “mini-Kyoto,” without the crowds), where, in the sleek Hotel Wood , you find yourself immersed in the onsen with the same people you’ve been riding with, except you’re all now naked.

But there’s little room for shame on this trip: On another night, in the town of Kaga, we find ourselves in a small karaoke bar called Swing Club, singing Bon Jovi full-throat. Sauber discovered the place years ago and has been returning ever since. When we walk in, swelling the bar’s population, the septuagenarian proprietress—a former classical dancer in the Bon Odori tradition, wearing a leopard-print blouse—beams at him warmly. He doesn’t recall her name. “I have these experiences all over the world,” he tells me. “It’s not about names. It’s about interactions.”

The 5th-century Sakurayama Hachimangu Shrine in Takayama

So beguiling is this whole trip that several guests, joined by their partners, would be sticking around to do RAID’s other Japan itinerary, a less strenuous trip through the Southern Islands. Sauber says that in general, while some cycling experience is suggested, it’s also a chance for participants—typically already thrust out of their comfort zone by being in Japan—to expand their sense of self. Among the clients on that trip, he notes, is a 70-year-old woman, bringing her e-bike. “She’s super adventurous, she’s traveled all over,” he says. “RAID is about pushing people’s limits, stretching that elastic—creating an experience that actually challenges people.”

RAID Cycling leads trips in countries across the globe, including Japan. Rates for the 8-day Tokyo to Kyoto trip start at $6800, which includes lodging, transport and support during the trip, and all meals.

NAP Tour Joins Kobe Matsuri, Visits Kyoto, Tokyo, Takayama

By Bruce Rutledge NAP General Manager

tokyo and kyoto tour package

Seattle showed up big for this year’s Kobe Matsuri, held on a rainy Sunday afternoon in April in downtown Kobe, Japan. To celebrate our ties with our oldest sister city, Mayor Bruce Harrell and his wife, Joanne, led an exuberant delegation through the streets.

tokyo and kyoto tour package

Seattle and Kobe tied the sister-city knot in 1957, establishing one of the first sister-city relationships in the world.

Lummi leader Joseph Hillaire carved a story pole commemorating the friendship between Seattle and Kobe in 1961, but that pole deteriorated over the years, prompting the city to create a new one.

The 14 members of the North American Press Japan spring tour were thrilled to join the parade. Our schedule just happened to put us in nearby Kyoto on the weekend of the festival, so when the sister-city delegation invited us, we jumped at the chance.

NAP’s tours are back in full force after a pause during the COVID pandemic. We have held three of our Japan 101 tours since 2023. These tours are perfect for first-timers. We visit Tokyo, Kyoto, Hiroshima, Takayama and Kanazawa. The Japan 101 tours are immersive — expect to put in at least 10,000 steps every day.

Our fall tour will be to Shikoku Island with a very special guest. Curious? Turn to page 5 to see who will be joining us! To get on our mailing list, drop us a line at [email protected] .

16 Japanese Cities To Visit Besides Tokyo And Kyoto

  • Osaka: Experience incredible nightlife and outstanding cuisine in this seaside city known for its energetic atmosphere and delicious food.
  • Naoshima: Discover the art island with its galleries, sculptures, and installations, and enjoy the tranquil atmosphere and sea views.
  • Himeji: Visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site Himeji-jo castle and explore the picturesque Mount Shosha and Kokoen garden for a diverse cultural experience.

As Japan finally opens its borders to eager travelers after one of the strictest lockdowns that the world has seen, most itineraries focus on the shopping districts of Tokyo and the Buddhist temples of Kyoto. Occasionally, the street food of Osaka might make it to the list.

Few consider venturing beyond the big cities of Tokyo and Kyoto, but for those who dare try, thrilling adventures await in Japan's best cities. From former homes of samurai warriors and current cities of geishas, hot springs spas, traditional architecture, and ski mountains — these cities deserve a spot on everyone’s Japanese bucket list.

UPDATE: 2023/10/09 19:32 EST BY MARIA BOU INK

Japan's beauty is not limited to Tokyo and Kyoto. The country is a hub of wonderful towns that are worth a trip. Therefore, this list was updated to include two of the best cities to visit in Japan besides Tokyo and Kyoto.

Related: Beautiful Tourist Pics Showcasing The Best Things Japan Is Known For

If tourists want to sample some of the greatest cuisine and beverages Japan has to offer, they should head over to Osaka , a seaside city famed for its incredible nightlife and outstanding cuisine. Tokyo's big-city energy is also present here but on a little lesser scale. This way, tourists can visit cities in Japan other than Tokyo and Kyoto while having the same vibes and escaping the crowds. Tourists are recommended to visit the Osaka Castle and Park in between all of their eating and exploring. It is one of the most well-known sights in Japan and is definitely worth visiting.

  • Some attractions: Tempozan Ferris Wheel, Universal Studio Japan, Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan, etc.

The island of Naoshima, which is reachable via ferry, is a wonderful location. The area is referred to as the art island, and tourists may find galleries, sculptures, and installations everywhere they go, especially if they stay at the upscale Benesse House, which serves as both a hotel and a museum of modern art. On the island, there are two towns, both of which include charming stores and little restaurants. There are also sea views everywhere, which enhances the tranquil atmosphere.

  • Some attractions: The Yellow Pumpkin, Chichu Art Museum, Naoshima Public Bath I Love Yu, etc.

Home to a UNESCO World Heritage Site castle , Himeji is worth a special trip for the Himeji-jo castle alone. Widely considered to be the finest example of 17th-century feudal-era Japanese architecture that still survives, Himeji-jo may be the reason tourists visit this city in Japan, but Himeji gives them several reasons to stay. On the outskirts of the city is the picturesque Mount Shosha, with a Buddhist temple at its peak. And if a hike isn’t someone’s cup of tea, tourists can spend a day at the Kokoen garden, which is made of nine walled gardens connected by a network of streams, waterfalls, and ponds and sits on the former feudal lord’s residence.

  • Some attractions: Himeji Castle, Engyoji, Himeji Central Park, etc.

Related: Three Days In Japan: 10 Cities You Can Explore In Only 72 Hours

Matsue’s location on a peninsula by the Sea of Japan with Lake Shinji on its west and Lake Nakaumi on the east has given the city another name: The City of Water. While the water bodies that surround it have given Matsue its second name, there are also water bodies within the city. Canals with boat tours for tourists flow through the city, old samurai houses flank its streets, and Matsue is home to one of only twelve medieval castles that are preserved in their original state in Japan. But that’s not all: the city has long attracted curious travelers with its rich myths and legends related to Matsue being the place where Japanese gods descend.

  • Some attractions: Matsue-jō Castle, Yuushien, Yaegaki Shrine, etc.

Yokohama is the second-largest Japanese city and the first to have opened its ports to the world at the end of the Edo Period. The port city quickly transformed from a small fishing village to a major city when foreign trade introduced new cultures to the old Japanese traditions of the village. As a result, Yokohama offers a contrast between old and new, and travelers can explore the streets of Yokohama to see the Western influence on the Japanese way of life everywhere. Tourists can visit traditional Japanese gardens and tea rooms, ramen and instant cup noodle museums, giant ferry wheels reminiscent of the London Eye, and one of the largest Chinatowns in the whole country.

  • Some attractions: Shin Yokohama Ramen Museum, Yokohama Chinatown, Yokohama Cosmoworld, etc.

For those who like the crowds of Tokyo but wish for a city just a tad more quite than the Japanese capital, Fukuoka’s contemporary attractions make it the ideal city. Fukuoka is Japan’s eighth most populous city and balances urban life with the natural beauty that is synonymous with Japan. The port city is filled with hot springs, hike trails, tea plantations, and sake breweries. But the best part, perhaps, is the fact that Fukuoka happens to be the city that invented tonkatsu ramen , so for those who’d like to slurp their way through Japan via its ramen, Fukuoka has to be the starting place.

  • Some attractions: Ohori Park, Marine World, Uminonakamichi Seaside Park, etc.

Hokkaido is an island region of Japan that is known for its hot springs, ski mountains, and volcanoes. Hakodate — located on the island’s southern tip — is one of the largest cities in Hokkaido and was voted Japan’s most attractive city in 2015. Visitors can hike to Mount Hakodate and enjoy spectacular views of the city surrounded by the sea, soak in the hot springs, go down ski slopes, or take in the views of the Mount Komagatake volcano from the lakes of Onuma Park. The best part of the port city, however, is its food. Surrounded by the sea, Hakodate is famous for its freshly-caught seafood, and the Hakodate Morning Market is the best place to enjoy it.

  • Some attractions: Goryokaku, Goryokaku Tower, Old Public Hall of Hakodate Ward, etc.

Kyoto isn’t the only city in Japan famous for its Buddhist monasteries and temples. Formerly known as Heijo-Kyo , Nara was once Japan’s capital city and is now home to three UNESCO World Heritage Sites . The Horyuji Area of Nara was the first to be on the list and includes 48 Buddhist sites, all of which are of immense importance to the Japanese culture and religion. Also on the list are areas with several temples and historical monuments from ancient times when Nara was still the capital, as well as pilgrimage routes and sites on the Kii Mountain. Tourists can end their tour of the temples and spiritual sites of Nara with a friendly visit to greet the deers at the Nara Park or stroll through Imaicho — a merchant town preserved from the Edo period that will take everyone back in time.

  • Some attractions: Today-ji, Nara Park, Kasuga Taisha Shrine, etc.

Nagasaki is most often associated with the atomic bomb and the tragedy that followed. Still, the city has a lot more to offer beyond the Atomic Bomb Museum and the Nagasaki Peace Park, which attract most tourists. Not only is the city home to several stunning islands off its coast, but Nagasaki has consistently ranked on top of the list of places with the best night views in Japan . Travelers can hop onto a ropeway to the peak of Mount Inasa and enjoy spectacular views of Nagasaki as it lights up after sunset. More surprisingly, however, Japan’s first and oldest Chinatown happens to be in Nagasaki, and it has continued to serve Japanese-Chinese fusion foods since the 17th century.

  • S ome attractions: Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum, Peace Park, Glover Garden, etc.

For those whose idea of a holiday in Japan includes spending hours soaking in hot water springs, Beppu is the place to be. Beppu’s gushes of hot spring water rank second highest in the world and the highest in Japan, gushing more than 100,000 liters of water each minute through thousands of hot springs. Not only does the abundance of hot springs make Beppu the Onsen City of Japan, but Beppu also has several boiling ponds known as Jigoku or hell. Locals use these Jigoku ponds for cooking food as well, giving rise to a culinary custom known as Jigoku-Mushi, or hell-steaming, that is peculiar to Beppu.

  • Some attractions: Kannawa Hot Springs, Beppu Ropeway, Shidaka Lake, etc.

Takayama is several things: A city surrounded by the Japanese Alps, Japan’s ski destination, home to bustling morning markets and festivals dating back to the 1600s, and a place where Japanese tradition flourishes through some of the country’s most beautifully preserved villages. Takayama’s Sanmachi area, in particular, houses preserved thatched-roof houses from which antique dealers and artisans sell their wares, and hidden cafes and brewers dish out hot coffees and icy sake to any visitors who manage to spot them.

  • Some attractions: Takayama Jinya, Hida Folk Village, Shinhotaka Ropeway, etc.

The city that served as the seat of the second most powerful feudal clan in Japan during the Edo period, Kanazawa has always been a place of great cultural significance in Japan. More importantly, Kanazawa was the second largest city after Kyoto, which managed to remain safe from the bombings of World War II. As a result, most of the city’s old castles, gardens, samurai, and geisha districts have survived the test of time. That being said, Kanazawa also houses the iconic 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art and is the city where traditional teahouses and crafts, including Kaga-yuzen (a silk dying technique), ohi ware (tea ceremony bowls), and gold leaf production continue to prosper.

  • Some attractions: Kenroku-en, Higashi Chaya District, Myouryouji, etc.

Shirakawa-go

Shirakawa-go is not a city but a traditional Japanese alpine village stuck in time . It is part of a national park and is a great place to visit to see the way things used to be in Japan. Here (and its sister village Gokayama), visitors may feel like they are living in the world of the 2003 movie, The Last Samurai starring Tom Cruise (although it was actually filmed in New Zealand).

These traditional villages are UNESCO World Heritage Listed and are a great example of how Japan works to preserve its heritage.

  • Some attractions: Wada House, Gassho-zukuri Minkaen, Myozenji, etc.

Hiroshima is one of only two cities to ever be hit with a nuclear bomb . It is also a testament to how cities can bounce back from destruction, being today a thriving city of over one million people. It was founded in 1589 as a castle town but transformed into a major industrial hub (which made it a target for nuclear bombing).

Today visitors can see the UNESCO World Heritage Listed Hiroshima Peace Memorial and commemorate the bombing wishing for such destruction to never again return to this planet.

  • Some attractions: Peace Memorial Park, Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum, Atomic Bomb Dome, etc.

Sapporo is the capital of Japan's northern island of Hokkaido. It is the largest city north of Tokyo and is considered the cultural and economic center of Hokkaido. The city hosted the 1972 Winter Olympics and is one of the best places in Japan to enjoy the winter season. Come in early February and attend the Sapporo Snow Festival. The festival draws over 2 million visitors from far and wide. Additionally, Sapporo is home to the only beer museum in Japan - the Sapporo Beer Museum.

  • Some attractions: Hokkaido Jingu, Moerenuma Park, Sapporo Beer Museum, etc.

Naha is the capital of the Okinawa Prefecture of Japan ( Okinawa is Japan's fifth major island ). The city has a population of around 300,000 and enjoys a humid subtropical climate (quite the opposite of Hokkaido's Sapporo). It is a stunning city and the gateway to Okinawa Island (which Americans may recall from the costly American invasion of the islands in World War Two). One of the top attractions in the city is the restored and rebuilt Shuri Castle (a former royal palace of the Ryukyu Kingdom).

  • Some attractions: Shuri Castle, Naminoue Shrine, Okinawa Prefectural Museum & Art Museum, etc.
