Here I am in Chelsea, about to start a guided walking tour, and I see no one has written a Yelp review of the Municipal Art Society, the sponsor of the tour. I've been on countless tours over the years of neighborhoods in Manhattan, the Bronx and Brooklyn. They are free and always informative. I think I know a lot about NYC, but I always learn something new during the walks. Why is their no typical grid layout west of 6th Avenue in the Village? How did the street-grid layout of the rest of Manhattan affect real estate and the development of the city economically? Tours of the Grand Concourse in the Bronx and of Tompkins Square Park in the East Village were two of my favorite tours. Today we're doing French Chelsea--the day after Bastille Day. For any visitor to NYC, check the MAS website to see what may be offered during your stay. You might also want to read the Pulitzer Prize winning book "Gotham." It traces the history of the city from its founding as a trading post until 1900.
