Inclusions and Exclusions

Check the package details to understand what’s included (e.g., meals, activities, entrance fees) and what additional expenses you might need to budget for.

OAT will not work with your travel agent. You have to make all your own bookings and if there is a problem, you most likely will call and get a different person every time.

I would NOT recommend G Adventures. They cater to a younger crowd, often times the accommodations are like hostels and may be uncomfortable for older people. Also, if one has limited mobility, lots of walking and vehicles driving long distances are not adequate for older people.

Safety Considerations for Solo Senior Travelers

Safety is paramount for solo senior travelers. Whether you’re embarking on a solo adventure or joining a tour, taking certain precautions can ensure a safe and enjoyable travel experience. Here are some important safety considerations and tips for safe solo travel for seniors :

1. Travel Insurance

It is highly recommended for solo senior travelers to have comprehensive travel insurance that covers medical emergencies, trip cancellations, and lost or stolen belongings. Having travel insurance provides peace of mind and financial protection in case of any unforeseen circumstances.

2. Stay Connected

While traveling alone, it is crucial to stay connected with your loved ones. Keep them informed about your itinerary, including dates, destinations, and accommodations. Regularly check-in with family or friends so that they know you’re safe. In case of emergencies, having someone who knows your whereabouts is essential.

3. Research Destinations

Before traveling to a new destination, it’s important to research the area thoroughly. Familiarize yourself with local customs, laws, and potential safety concerns. Reading travel advisories, reviews, and recommendations can provide valuable insights and help you make informed decisions.

4. Choose Well-Reviewed Accommodations

When selecting accommodations, opt for well-reviewed hotels, resorts, or vacation rentals. Look for places that prioritize safety and have positive feedback from fellow travelers. Check for security features such as well-lit entrances, secure locks, and 24-hour front desk service.

5. Be Aware of Local Customs and Safety Precautions

Respect and adhere to local customs and traditions wherever you travel. By being aware of local norms, you can avoid potentially unsafe situations and show respect to the local culture. Additionally, familiarize yourself with the safety precautions recommended for the destination, such as avoiding certain areas or taking precautions against pickpocketing.

6. Consider Traveling in Groups or Joining Guided Tours

Traveling with a group provides an additional layer of security, companionship, and the expertise of knowledgeable guides. It also offers the opportunity to meet like-minded individuals and share memorable experiences.

7. Remain Vigilant and Trust Your Instincts

The Best Trips to Take in Your 60s

From a train journey through the Canadian Rockies to a tour of the pyramids in Egypt, these are the top vacations for seniors over 60.

over 60 adventure travel

With 61 being the average age of retirement in the U.S. , your seventh decade might just be the time to explore the places you've always dreamed of but could never visit. Sure, health and financial situations vary greatly and can create limitations when it comes to traveling, but there are still plenty of getaways to suit just about any physical ability or budget.

It's time to start ticking off some of those bucket list items, whether that means booking a beach destination for some rest and relaxation or embarking on the adventure of a lifetime in a faraway place (an African safari, you say?).

From cruises to train trips to glamping experiences, here are the best trips for travelers over 60.

A River Cruise

For first-time cruisers, a river cruise is a safe starting point. Rivers such as the Danube (Central and Southeastern Europe), the Rhine (starting in the Swiss Alps), and the Seine (in northern France) are popular because they flow right through picturesque and historic cities, allowing for a variety of shore excursions.

But you don't have to go abroad to sail along a scenic river. In the U.S., the Mississippi — flowing from northern Minnesota all the way down to the Gulf of Mexico — is a popular option, with three main cruise lines operating both contemporary boats and old-style paddle wheelers. Less trodden but equally charming are the Columbia and Snake Rivers in the Pacific Northwest, and even the Hudson River in New York.

A Journey Across the Sea

Veritable seaborne cities, some of the largest cruise ships are equipped with restaurants, theaters, pools, and casinos to keep guests entertained and comfortable while sailing the ocean blue. The itinerary options are near infinite, with some lines circumnavigating the Mediterranean and others embarking on maritime journeys in the North Atlantic, South Pacific, Asia, and beyond. We recommend booking with Holland America, Cunard, or Royal Caribbean for big-ship cruising in optimal comfort. And if you've always imagined making a classic transatlantic crossing and have the time, you might check off a bucket list item with a week on the famed Queen Mary 2.

A Cruise Aboard a Midsize Ship

Midsize cruise ships that carry between 250 and 600 passengers offer many of the same amenities that large ships offer, but they can also stop at ports that can't accommodate colossal vessels–the towns and villages on Alaskan Dream Cruises' trip through the Inside Passage , for example . Also check out Paul Gauguin Cruises' South Pacific itineraries and Windstar's trips in the Caribbean and the Mediterranean — both options available to just a few hundred passengers at a time.

A Ride on the Orient Express

The Venice Simplon-Orient-Express , a rolling homage to perhaps the most famous rail service in history, carries passengers aboard luxuriously restored 1920s carriages across Europe — and across time. The Classic Route , which runs between Paris and Venice, takes passengers through picturesque European cities, towns, and farmlands in the comfort of private cabins or grand suites, with elegant dining and bar cars to enjoy along the way. Make the journey even more fun and dress to impress on this nostalgic (and iconic) train ride.

An All-American Train Trip

The California Zephyr, an Amtrak train that travels from Chicago to the Bay Area , passes through some of the most incredible natural scenery in the western United States, including the Great Plains, the Rocky Mountains, and the Sierra Nevada. As a bonus, it's a decidedly convenient way to cross the country, especially for those with time to spare and a preference not to fly.

Almost an equal distance but traveling a more northern route is the Empire Builder , also by Amtrak. It connects Seattle and Chicago, winding through the Rockies and along parts of the famous Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail. For longer trips like these (40-plus hours), make sure to book a bedroom or roomette for comfort.

Looking for something shorter? The 35-hour Coast Starlight route traverses the West Coast between Los Angeles and Seattle, offering spectacular views of the Pacific shoreline, ancient redwood forests, and snow-capped mountains, all best seen from the Sightseer Lounge car.

The Canadian Rockies by Rail

If it's majestic mountains, icy-blue waters, dramatic canyons, and miles upon miles of evergreen forest you're keen to see, the revered Rocky Mountaineer is your ticket. There are four itineraries to choose from, but the most popular one is the First Passage to the West, traveling from Vancouver to Banff and Lake Louise (and vice versa). Passengers can admire the surroundings from the comfort of glass-topped observation cars or soak in the fresh mountain air from outdoor viewing platforms.

The Galápagos

Since this archipelago is off the coast of Ecuador, you'll need to travel to either Quito or Guayaquil to start your journey. Small ships or yachts are ideal for getting close to nature, and with most you can kayak, snorkel, or dive when not simply observing the resident iguanas, giant tortoises, penguins, sea lions, and numerous bird species from the comfort of the deck. The vessels are great for day trips, but you can also opt for a live-aboard experience or a stay at one of the hotels on one of the few inhabited islands. In any case, planning well ahead of your trip to the Galápagos is important because of limitations on the number of visitors.

An African Safari

For many, an African safari is the ultimate vacation and the first great adventure considered after retirement. Planning one, however, can be overwhelming with the number of options, from which tour company to book to how much to spend to where to stay. Accommodations range from luxurious glamping sites to rustic lodges and tent camps — all perfectly comfortable for the over-60 set. Special interests such as seeing the Big Five, spotting certain birds, or cultural experiences should be considered as well. Small group hikes or jeep rides are good options for an intimate experience. Research and planning are key in creating your perfect safari vacation.

A Northern Lights Escape

Many people hope to see the aurora borealis in their lifetimes, but the northern lights are notoriously elusive. Their appearance is spectacular but unpredictable, influenced by weather, the time of year, and solar activity. There are many great destinations for seeing the Northern Lights : Guided tours in Alaska, northern Canada, Greenland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, and Finland accommodate seekers of greatest nature's light show. Lodging options range from glass igloos to cozy cabins. When choosing a tour, try to book one that offers a return trip if your pursuit of polar lights proves unsuccessful.

Egypt and the Pyramids

Who isn't fascinated by the Great Sphinx of Giza, the pyramids, and the stories of King Tutankhamun and the tombs of the pharaohs? Near Cairo , home of the artifact-packed Egyptian Museum , visitors can explore the Great Pyramid of Giza and several smaller pyramids. In Luxor, a one-hour flight away, visitors can visit Karnak, a complex of ancient temples, statues, and obelisks, as well as Luxor Temple, dating back to around 1450 B.C.E. Top the trip off with a boat excursion on the Nile for the full experience.

The Belmond Hiram Bingham

Another luxury ride to a destination on many travelers' bucket lists, Hiram Bingham, a Belmond Train , takes passengers from Cuzco, Peru, to nearby Machu Picchu . The train, featuring Pullman-style carriages decked out with upholstered armchairs and varnished wood and brass, is named after the American archaeologist, explorer, and writer who revealed Machu Picchu to much of the world in 1911.

A Staycation

Don't forget that it's never too late to become a tourist in your own backyard. Staycations are an easy and convenient way to scratch the travel itch without going too far out of your comfort zone.

Stay in a downtown hotel or a tucked-away Airbnb. Find a new restaurant, museum, or neighborhood you've yet to visit. You're bound to discover some fresh pleasures and maybe even a new hobby close to home. Do it on your own schedule, working around crowded days and using those off-peak senior discounts to your advantage.

Trafalgar has a “Very Important Traveler” program that offers 5% savings on selected trips. For solo travelers, the cost of a single supplement depends on the trip. Overseas Adventure Travel (OAT), part of the Grand Circle Corporation since 1978, focuses on active travelers over 50 who are looking for hands-on experiences in destinations around the world. The seniors-only company prides itself in taking travelers off the beaten track with immersive “Day in the Life” experiences such as shopping at local markets, visiting children at school, and taking part in home-hosted meals. OAT opts for accommodations that offer authentic local experiences—think smaller family-run hotels, paradores , and hotels close to city centers.

Both land and small-ship tours for seniors are available. Most trips last two weeks or more, with optional pre- and post-trip extensions, appealing to retirees and working people who have saved vacation time as well as travel funds. The physical requirements of each tour are described in detail, with an activity level rating system of one (easy) to five (strenuous). Each itinerary outlines the included meals and local tours; optional tours require an additional fee, but the itineraries also recommend many free or inexpensive options for your free time.

BRING THE GRANDCHILDREN:   8 Grandparent-Grandkid Vacations for Active Seniors

OAT has made itself a leader in solo travel: More than a quarter of its senior citizen clients are solo travelers, and of those, 85% are women. Roughly 92% of its single spaces are free of any singles surcharge, others are heavily discounted, and the company also offers a roommate matching program. In 2019, OAT began offering some women-only departures.

While not a cut-rate tour company, OAT works hard to provide senior tours at low per diems—giving you more for your travel dollar. The Travel Channel recognized it as a top provider for budget-conscious travelers, and the Grand Circle Foundation received a Global Vision award for leadership in tourism and philanthropy.

over 60 adventure travel

Road Scholar is a senior travel tour company that emphasizes lifelong learning and educational travel for older travelers. Founded in 1975 as the nonprofit Elderhostel, the organization changed its name in 2010 and now provides study tours throughout the U.S., Canada, and in more than 100 other countries. All of its senior-focused tours include guidance and lectures by Road Scholar faculty who are experts on topics relevant to the destination. Lodgings are always comfortable and “sometimes even iconic.”

Road Scholar programs include theme-based travel (such as arts, philosophy and religion, and nature studies), outdoor adventures, service learning trips, adventures afloat, intergenerational tours, and independent city discoveries. The “Choose Your Pace” feature allows you to choose among multiple options of tour length, challenge, and pace. Extended-stay programs range from eight days in Florence to 45 days in southern Spain.

TRIPS OF A LIFETIME:   12 Best Amtrak Vacations and Scenic Train Rides in North America

Activity levels for tours range from “easy-going” to “outdoor: challenging,” with the physical demands of each tour described in its itinerary. An “easy” tour might cover a week of Chautauqua lectures in New York, while a “challenging” tour might include hiking and kayaking in Alaska.

Nearly 25% of Road Scholars are traveling solo; the senior tour company offers some discounts on single rooms, provides supportive advice to women traveling solo, and emphasizes “learning in the company of a small group of individual friends, rather than traveling with a collection of couples.”  Road Scholar travelers tend to be curious and open to new ideas and cultures. The travel company recently added a virtual Adventures Online series of in-depth lectures for those who wish to supplement an in-person journey or simply learn from home.

Quick Facts about Senior Travel Tours with Road Scholar

  • Average group size: 13 to 24 people on “small group” tours; 12 or fewer on “micro group” tours; other group sizes vary by tour type and destination.
  • Price range: Moderate to expensive, but with lots of included perks that other tour companies charge extra for.

It offers specialized land journeys, active outdoor journeys, small ship cruises, and cultural stays. At least one expert accompanies each tour or stay, providing lectures and local tours appropriate to the destination. Tours include culturally immersive experiences like visits to homes, meals with locals, and demonstrations of local crafts and cuisines. High-quality accommodations are included in the price and reflect the character of the local culture.

ADVENTURES FOR WOMEN: 9 Travel Companies That Specialize in Women’s-Only Tours

Smithsonian also provides special interest tours for older travelers, including study at Oxford, cave art exploration, and observation of the total solar eclipse in 2024. Its Cultural Stays allow travelers to “unpack once” and spend from one to three weeks exploring and learning in and around a single destination.

A branch of the 175-year-old Smithsonian Institution, Smithsonian Journeys has operated tours for more than 50 years. Its wide range of travel options appeals to many age groups, but the average age of travelers with this company is 55+. (The typical age range on active tours is 45 to 70; on special interest tours, it’s 55 to 80.) Smithsonian’s five activity level ratings are somewhat more demanding than Road Scholar’s, ranging from “Easy” (easy walking and shorter travel days) to “Challenging” (e.g., climbing Kilimanjaro).

Quick Facts about Senior Tours with Smithsonian Journeys

  • Average group size: 12 to 24 people for most land journeys; cruises from 36 people (river boat) to 264 (small ship cruise).

  • Destinations: 130 itineraries on seven continents (with an emphasis on Europe).
  • How to Book: Directly through Smithsonian Journeys or through a travel agent such as AAA .

Established more than 90 years ago, Globus heads a family of travel brands that also includes Avalon Waterways (river tours) and Cosmos (budget tours). The company offers travel styles for a variety of fitness levels and interests, with an emphasis on freedom and flexibility that works especially well for seniors. It ranks among the best escorted tour companies for the 55+ age group because it recognizes that the one-size-fits-all mentality does not work for everyone, especially older travelers.

FOODIE VACATIONS:   9 Best Companies for Culinary Tours

Free time on every tour allows for “adventure a la carte.” A wide array of optional excursions and activities is offered on each itinerary: some are extra-cost activities provided by the company, while others are simply helpful suggestions for independent exploration. Globus provides tour directors and local guides from the region for every tour, as well as “skip the lines” access to sites, centrally located first-class hotels, opportunities to meet local families, and some “experiential dining” meals.

Globus tours come in many different formats. Globus Undiscovered tours take you off the beaten path where there are fewer crowds; this option is attractive to seasoned travelers who have already seen famous sights like the Tower of Pisa and the Mona Lisa. Escapes by Globus offers up to a 40% discount on tours taken between November and March. Choice Touring and Independence by Globus provide itineraries that allow you to choose excursions and have more “I-time” while the company provides lodging and the help of a tour director.

Quick Facts about Guided Tours for Older Travelers with Globus

  • Average group size: 24 people (small-group discovery) to 36 people (average size of a coach tour).
  • Price range: Inexpensive, but optional excursions cost extra.
  • What’s included: All accommodations, some meals, airport transfers on published tour departure and return dates, and admission to sites included in tour.

  • Primary audience: Adults who want a wide variety of travel options.
  • Destinations: More than 50 countries on six continents.
  • How to Book: Directly through Globus ; via Travelstride , Tourhub , or TourRadar , all which are tour specialist OTAs; or through a travel agent such as AAA .

7. Intrepid Travel

Founded in 1988 in Australia and now employee-owned, Intrepid Travel offers 1,100 escorted tours worldwide, with an average of 10 travelers per tour. The company focuses on small group active trips off the beaten track. Its tours often use public transportation and stay at locally owned accommodations.

Intrepid has an age-inclusive philosophy (“18 to 70”) and aims to provide tours for all interests and comfort levels. Tour styles include “ Basix ” for the budget travel crowd and “ Comfort ,” which tends to attract older travelers. The travel tour company also offers retreats and tours for women, solo travelers, and the 18-29 age group. Note that while Intrepid tours are active, its tours are “not a constant endurance test.” A general level of health and fitness is adequate for its trips.

HIT THE TRAILS: 9 Best Tour Companies for Walking, Trekking, and Hiking Tours

Examples of Intrepid tours include a winter journey to Iceland to view the Aurora Borealis, a hiking-cycling trip in Sri Lanka, snorkeling in Bali, kayaking in Alaska, and enjoying the Naadam Festival in Mongolia or Day of the Dead in Mexico. Intrepid also offers small ship adventure cruising to such places as the Galapagos Island, the Greek and Turkish Islands, Antarctica, and French Polynesia.

Intrepid conducts safety assessments of all included and optional activities; experienced local leaders provide instruction and advice to travelers who are new to an activity or area. 8. Viking River Cruises

People dining onboard a Viking River Cruise ship with beautiful water and forest in the background

Viking River Cruises specializes in European river touring, but it also offers small ship ocean cruises and expedition voyages. The company is more than 25 years old and is among the most awarded river cruise lines worldwide. Viking owns and operates its own ships; it also owns some dock locations.

SINGLE TRAVEL: 10 Best Tour Companies for Solo Travelers

Viking does not try to be all things to all people. There are no casinos on its river boats, for example, nor are children under 18 allowed. Viking also has a “no nickel and diming and no umbrella drinks” policy. However, you can expect outside rooms, onboard enrichment lectures, destination performances, onshore excursions in every port, introductions to local life and people, and an experienced staff. (In fact, 90% of the company’s river cruise staff returns each year.) Optional pre- and post-tour land extensions are offered.

With a philosophy that travel “should be a doorway to cultural insight and personal enrichment,” Viking could be regarded as a waterborne version of Road Scholar or Smithsonian Journeys. The company owns a learning channel (Viking TV) and provides recommended readings and other materials before you depart.

Quick Facts about Cruises for Seniors with Viking

  • Passenger limit on river boats: 190 people  (up to 930 on ocean ships)

  • What’s included: Onboard accommodations, meals, shore excursions, entertainment, tips; and transfers with air purchase through Viking. Some tours also include free international airfare.

  • Destinations: Mostly Europe for river tours, also cruises on the Nile, Mississippi, and Mekong Rivers; expedition cruises to Antarctica and the Great Lakes; ocean cruises to various destinations.
  • How to Book: Directly through Viking ; via CruiseCritic ; or through a travel agent such as AAA .

More Senior Travel Tour Company Options for Older Travelers

If you can’t see yourself in any of the senior tour styles I’ve mentioned above—or maybe you just want even more options—I have a few more recommendations.

1) Those who loved travel experiences in their student days and prefer an inexpensive tour may want to look at EF Go Ahead Tours .

2) Those who are physically fit and want active travel like cycling tours and walking tours with a mixed age group have many good options, including Backroads and Country Walkers , which can be a good fit for senior cycling and walking enthusiasts.

College graduates should check to see if their alumni association sponsors any tours: AHI , Odysseys Unlimited , and other companies work with these associations to provide excellent tours at good prices.

Finally, seniors planning a multigenerational family vacation or skip-gen trip with the grandkids should consider a company like Adventures by Disney , which is a hit with all ages.

This can include activities that are water-related, such as kayaking, canoeing, fishing, and rafting, or it may include taking in the scenery with a hike, riding horseback, or some other physical activity. The important thing to consider when traveling with a senior group on an adventure such as this is that you'll have to be in moderately good physical shape. You can find a number of resources that provide adventurous group travel for seniors. Here are a few of them:

Elder Treks is the world's first adventure travel company that was designed exclusively for people ages 50 and over. They have an extensive list of destinations to choose from and it would be well worth checking out their website.

Travel With a Challenge

Travel with a Challenge has many different volunteer vacation options available that would embrace the interests of adults of any age. Another bonus is the low-budget cost of these vacations once you reach your volunteer destination.

Finding the Right Senior Travel Group

A number of factors should be taken into consideration when choosing the right travel group for you. First, if you want to travel with seniors, the first criteria will be to consider groups comprised of people 50 years and older. Second, you'll want to determine what is important to you as you travel. This can include things like your budget for the trip as well as what you want to do on your vacation and where you want to go. As you plan, items to consider include:

  • Free time available vs. scheduled activities.
  • Difficulty level of, and pace of, activities.
  • High end, all-inclusive vs. budget tours.

Benefits of Traveling as a Group

Traveling as a group offers a number of benefits. Groups can save money on transportation and hotels and tours are a great way to meet other seniors. Another benefit often overlooked is the safety afforded when traveling as a group. For instance, tours require different levels of physical ability. Group tour guides will make the level of difficulty known to groups whereas this information is often overlooked for those who are traveling independently.

Plan Ahead for Senior Vacations

No matter what kind of group you decide to travel with, it is important to plan well before leaving. If you have special needs, contact the travel group coordinator to find out if the tour or trip can accommodate your needs. For information on accessibility while traveling, visit Society for Accessible Travel & Hospitality to see if the areas you plan to visit can accommodate your needs. If you've never traveled with a group, you may want to consider a senior travel club to help make the process easier. Once you get information on a group, read the literature, including the fine print, and be sure to check with the Better Business Bureau to be sure the group you've chosen is reputable.

Enjoy Your Vacation

Planning your trip well will ensure that the vacation is not only fun-filled and informative or adventurous but also relaxing and energizing at the same time. Trips that go off without a hitch leave you free to enjoy every minute of every activity.

Do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip as a senior.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travellers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises). However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travellers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

Who are Intrepid travellers?

Intrepid adventures are for travellers with a yearning to get off the beaten track. Whether you're travelling solo, with a group of friends, or are aged 18 or 70, there is an Intrepid adventure to suit your interests and comfort level. Each Intrepid adventure has a physical and cultural grading to help you decide if the trip is right for you. No special skills are required for most adventures, just a sense of adventure and a curiosity about the world. Even on our camping adventures no previous experience is required; our tents are easy to set up, even for first-time campers.

Are there age restrictions on your trips?

For the majority of our trips the minimum age is 15. An adult must accompany all children under the age of 18. Our Overland Adventures have a minimum age of 18. Younger children can join us on our Family trips and Short Break Adventures, but check each trip for its minimum age, which is located on the trip’s overview page on the website. Most of our trips don’t have a maximum age limit, but a Self-Assessment Form is required for all passengers 70 years and over.

How many people will be on my trip?

Good things come in small packages, which is why we keep our group sizes down. This means we’re small enough to remain flexible as we thread our way through communities without intimidating the locals. On most of our trips you’ll be part of an intimate group of 12-16 people, though our group sizes are on average 10 people. Our Overland trips are in purpose-built vehicles that can carry up to 24 travellers. Group sizes are displayed on each trip’s overview page on our website.

I’m travelling alone – is that OK?

This is the beauty of the Intrepid style of travel: many of our travellers join because they are travelling solo and want to meet and share experiences with like-minded people.

Learn more about solo travel

I have a disability – can I join an Intrepid trip?

Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. We ask that you carefully consider whether you are physically and mentally able to complete the itinerary you have chosen, recognising that on many trips you will be required to carry your own bags and use public transport.

Where we can we will make reasonable adjustments to the operation of our trips to facilitate the requirements of disabled travellers – such as booking ground floor accommodation, or having our leaders communicate important directions in writing as well as verbally. Many travellers with disabilities have been able to enjoy our trips by travelling with a friend or companion who can assist with specific needs. If joining a group trip is not practical we may be able to provide you with a private departure. Please contact our sales team for further information on any of our itineraries.

Learn more about accessible travel with Intrepid

Do I need to buy travel insurance?

Travel insurance is compulsory on all our trips if you’re travelling internationally. Minimum coverage may differ from trip to trip, so make sure you check the Travel Insurance section in your Essential Trip Information. You will not be permitted to join the group until your leader has sighted your insurance policy number and the insurance company's 24-hour emergency contact number – it’s really important there are no barriers to getting emergency assistance for you.

Will I have my own room?

It's your call. Rooming on our trips is organised on a twin-share basis, but most of our trips also have the option to pay an extra fee for your own room. Just let us know at the time of booking and we'll arrange it for you.

For twin-share rooms, we pair up solo travellers with another traveller of the same gender as per the gender marker on each of their passports. As a responsible tour operator, we strive to create a safe and inclusive environment for everyone. In the case that your gender identity differs from what's indicated on your passport, please contact us so that we can discuss rooming options with you.

On a small selection of itineraries some accommodations are booked on an open-gender, multi-share basis. In those instances it will clearly be stated in your Essential Trip Information.

How does group time work?

Whether you’re travelling alone or with a partner, our trips have a set itinerary. But within that there’s time set aside for your own exploration (if you want to – no pressure). Depending on how you're feeling, you may want to have some downtime, ask your guide for a few tips then head out alone, or hang out with the group and see where the day takes you.

What makes a small group tour better than a coach tour?

The main difference between a small group tour and a coach tour is the size of the group; our tours have 10 travellers each (on average) while coaches can hold up to 60 people. This means that you'll never have to vie for your leader's attention on a small group tour because you'll automatically have it.

Tune up your vehicles before summer holiday travel

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) - Nationally, AAA projects nearly $71 million travelers over the Independence Day holiday travel period with $60.6 million of those travelers driving. The summer heat could stall your plans.

“The heat on your tires will have them cracking and coming apart and you don’t know it,” said Owner of Walt’s Auto Service Plus Inc. , Walt Pursell. “Then it gets hot and the heat expands inside your tires and the rubber starts coming apart.”

Pursell states that’s not even the worst that could happen noting, “The engine will start overheating because maybe you’ve had a leak in your radiator, water pump, or a little hose — over the winter time you didn’t notice it, but now you’re low on antifreeze, you’re trying to go down the road and your engine starts overheating.”

Pursell said these problems can become costly if you wait to get them fixed ranging from a couple hundred dollars to a couple thousand.

“Engines you’re talking ten to twelve thousand dollars and transmissions you may be five or six thousand dollars so it’s pretty pricey to get something overheated and damaged,” said Pursell.

To help avoid a big financial detour, Pursell suggests paying attention now.

“If the lights on, it’s on for a reason — get it checked out. Some of them have service engine soon or some are check engine, it just depends on what’s going on. Listen to your car,” said Pursell. “There’s a sensor that’s telling that it has a problem. You many smell something burning, something sweet, some nasty — if you’re smelling it, there’s a reason and you need to get it checked out.”

Heat can also affect your cars battery, so be sure you’re checking that too.

Pursell said not to wait until the last minute because shops tend to be busier the closer you get to a big travel day.

Nearly 71 Million People Expected to Travel over July 4th Week

This year’s extended independence day forecast exceeds pre-pandemic numbers, sets new record.

over 60 adventure travel

WASHINGTON, DC (June 20, 2024) – AAA projects 70.9 million travelers will head 50 miles or more from home over the Independence Day holiday travel period*. For the first time, AAA looked at the entire July 4 th week, plus the Saturday before and the Sunday after the holiday. This year’s projected number of travelers for that time period is a 5% increase compared to 2023 and an 8% increase over 2019.

“With summer vacations in full swing and the flexibility of remote work, more Americans are taking extended trips around Independence Day,” said Paula Twidale, Senior Vice President of AAA Travel. “We anticipate this July 4 th week will be the busiest ever with an additional 5.7 million people traveling compared to 2019.”

Share of Travelers by Mode pie chart and Number of Travelers by Mode table

AAA projects a record 60.6 million people will travel by car over Independence Day week – that’s an additional 2.8 million travelers compared to last year. This year’s number also surpasses 2019 when 55.3 million people traveled by car over July 4 th week. AAA car rental partner Hertz says Dallas, Denver, Salt Lake City, Los Angeles, and San Francisco are the cities displaying the highest rental demand during the holiday week. The busiest pick-up days are projected to be Friday, June 28, Saturday, June 29, and Wednesday, July 3.

Gas prices are lower than last year when the national average was $3.53. Pump prices will likely continue going down leading up to Independence Day.  At that point, they will likely level off and remain relatively stable until after Labor Day, similar to last year.  An important caveat is hurricane season – underway now – which could affect gas prices should a storm negatively impact Gulf Coast oil production and refining centers.

The number of air travelers is also expected to set a new record. AAA projects 5.74 million people will fly to their July 4 th destinations. That’s an increase of nearly 7% compared to last year and a 12% increase over 2019. AAA booking data shows domestic airfare is 2% cheaper this Independence Day week compared to last year, and the average price for a domestic roundtrip ticket is $800. Airports will be packed throughout the week. AAA recommends arriving 2 hours early, reserving parking ahead of time, and traveling with carry-on luggage versus checked bags to save time and money.

More than 4.6 million people are expected to travel by other modes of transportation, including buses, cruises, and trains. This category is seeing an increase of 9% compared to last year, but this year’s number is shy of 2019’s figure of 4.79 million. Cruising continues its remarkable post-pandemic comeback. This time of year, Alaska cruises are in high demand, making Seattle and Anchorage top domestic destinations. Cruise travelers are also finding deals this summer. With new ships coming onto the market – and going for a premium – some cruise lines have been offering targeted discounts to fill older inventory for remaining cabins.

Best/Worst Times to Drive and Peak Congestion by Metro

INRIX , a provider of transportation data and insights, says the worst times to travel by car before and on July 4 th are between 2pm and 7pm. Drivers should hit the road in the morning, and travelers returning on Monday, July 8 th should avoid rush hour traffic in the morning and afternoon.

“Drivers in large metro areas can expect the worst traffic delays on Wednesday, July 3 rd , as they leave town, and Sunday, July 7th, as they return,” said Bob Pishue, transportation analyst at INRIX. “R oad trips over the holiday week could take up to 67% longer than normal. Travelers should monitor 511 services, local news stations, and traffic apps for up-to-the-minute road conditions.”

Please note that the times listed below are for the time zone in which the metro is located.

For example, Atlanta routes = ET and Los Angeles routes = PT.

  Top Destinations

This July 4 th week, travelers are cooling off in the Pacific Northwest and Alaska – and by the ocean! Seattle, Vancouver, and Anchorage are top destinations because of the popularity of Alaska cruises this time of year. Beaches in South Florida, Honolulu, Punta Cana, and Barcelona are in high demand. Historical sites in European cities like London, Rome, Dublin, Paris, and Athens are also popular. The top 10 domestic and international destinations below are based on AAA booking data.

Family Road Trip Checklist

With road trips expected to set a new record this July 4 th week, AAA teamed up with Chicco to share safety tips for families with young children.

  • Check car seat fit. Before you hit the road, check your child’s weight and height to ensure they’re in the right seat and mode of use – especially when it comes to transitioning from rear to forward-facing. Children should remain rear-facing as long as possible for better protection of their head, neck, and spine in the event of a crash. If you are unsure which car seat is best for your child, Chicco offers a car seat comparison guide.
  • Double check car seat installation. Even if your car seat is already installed in the car, it’s worth checking everything is safe and secure. An easy at-home way to do this is with the “inch test.” Simply grab the seat at the car seat belt path and pull side to side and front to back. If it moves more than one inch in any direction, uninstall and start over until a secure fit is achieved. For any questions, utilize the car seat manual, QR codes, or online resources like those offered by Chicco.
  • Secure loose items in the car. Take time to organize and clean up your car before hitting the road. Storage organizers that secure to the back of the driver and passenger seats are simple solutions to make sure everything has a spot, especially loose items that can become projectiles in case of a sudden stop.
  • Be prepared for the unexpected. Pack an emergency kit with first-aid supplies, water, snacks, blankets, jumper cables, and flares. Make sure your phone is fully charged – and keep a charger in the car – to call AAA or request roadside assistance digitally if your battery dies, you lock yourself out, or you need a tow.
  • Map your route. Families with young children should plan for frequent and longer stops along the way. Map out your route ahead of time with AAA TripTik and browse hotels, restaurants, and other activities along the way on AAA Trip Canvas.
  • Bring entertainment. Make sure to place toys and books within reach to keep children entertained. If your kids use tablets or other electronics, make sure the devices are fully charged and pre-downloaded before leaving home. Another fun way to get the whole family excited for the road trip is to create a family playlist of everyone’s favorite songs!

Holiday Forecast Methodology

Travel Forecast

In cooperation with AAA, S&P Global Market Intelligence (SPGMI) developed a unique methodology to forecast actual domestic travel volumes. The economic variables used to forecast travel for the current holiday are leveraged from SPGMI’s proprietary databases. These data include macroeconomic drivers such as employment, output, household net worth, asset prices, including stock indices, interest rates, housing market indicators, and variables related to travel and tourism, including gasoline prices, airline travel, and hotel stays. AAA and SPGMI have quantified holiday travel volumes going back to 2000.

Historical travel volume estimates come from DK SHIFFLET’s TRAVEL PERFORMANCE/Monitor SM . The PERFORMANCE/Monitor SM is a comprehensive study measuring the travel behavior of U.S. residents. DK SHIFFLET contacts over 50,000 U.S. households each month to obtain detailed travel data, resulting in the unique ability to estimate visitor volume and spending, identify trends, and forecast U.S. travel behavior, all after the trips have been taken.

The travel forecast is reported in person-trips. In particular, AAA and SPGMI forecast the total U.S. holiday travel volume and expected mode of transportation. The travel forecast presented in this report was prepared the week of May 27, 2024.

Because AAA forecasts focus on domestic leisure travel only, comparisons to TSA passenger screening numbers should not be made. TSA data includes all passengers traveling on both domestic and international routes. Additionally, TSA screens passengers each time they enter secured areas of the airport, therefore each one-way trip is counted as a passenger tally. AAA focuses on person-trips, which include the full round-trip travel itinerary. As a result, direct comparisons of AAA forecast volumes and daily TSA screenings represent different factors.

*Independence Day Holiday Travel Period

For this forecast, the Independence Day holiday travel period is defined as the nine-day period from Saturday, June 29 to Sunday, July 7. Historically, the Independence Day holiday period included only one weekend. This is the first year the Independence Day holiday travel period is a longer timeframe with two weekends included.

Here’s the No. 1 reason for the long wait at TSA screening

Tsa spokesman says banned items to blame for holding up line.

Erik von Ancken , Anchor/Reporter

ORLANDO, Fla. – With just over a week to go until July 4, the Transportation Security Administration just announced it had its busiest day ever - yet again.

This past Sunday, the TSA screened a record 3 million passengers in airports across the country, according to TSA spokesman Mark Howell.

On any given day, some 80,000 passengers are passing through the MCO checkpoints, more on holidays. That’s up 8% from last year.

Howell said what slows down a security screening line most is when a passenger tries to bring something through that is banned.

“Prohibited items are the number one thing that will slow lines down, especially in the busy parts of the morning,” Howell said.

Howell and TSA officers, including supervisor Elizabeth Rodriguez and explosives expert Dan Miller, displayed the banned items confiscated from the checkpoints at MCO over the past month or so. A display table showed tasers, saw blades, augers, replica weapons, replica grenades, lots of liquids, including maple syrup and mayonnaise, and even a reciprocating saw, commonly known as a sawzall.

“This slows down everything because once that happens, then our officers have to go and take that bag off to the side, screen another bag and the passenger and pull our property search officers away from doing their job,” Miller said. “And then that’s how our wait times lines and lines start getting a lot longer.”

Rodriguez said attempting to bring a gun through the checkpoint, loaded or unloaded, immediately shuts down a line and results in law enforcement involvement.

“If it’s a firearm, then we’re going to shut down the lane, we have to move people over so that process depends on law enforcement and statements and reports,” Rodriguez said. “And everything we need to do could take 30 to 45 minutes to process and reopen the lane.”

In the U.S., you are allowed to fly with a gun and/or ammunition but the firearm must be unloaded in a hard locked case and must be in your checked luggage. And you must declare the gun to your airline when you check in at the counter - don’t bring it to the checkpoint!

The rules for carrying liquids on board have not changed - think 3-1-1. You’re allowed to carry on one sandwich-sized clear plastic bag full of as many small bottles of liquid or gel as will fit - as long as each container is no bigger than 3.4 ounces.

Howell said the TSA adds additional officers and additional lanes at MCO to match the crowd level throughout the day. During the busiest time, from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m., all screening lanes are open.

“Yes we’re prepping for this busy time,” Howell said. “We’re going to do what we can to make sure that we have the lanes open that we need based on the projections that are coming in. But the one thing we can’t control is what people bring to the airports.”

And don’t forget MCO provides a free service to allow passengers to make a reservation to speed through the screening checkpoint - it’s called MCO Reserve.

At least a day in advance, pick your time and then show up at that time at the Clear lane at the proper checkpoint. After showing your reservation and your ID, a Clear representative should escort you directly to the front of the screening line! MCO Reserve is a partnership with Clear.

The TSA also offers a free service called TSA Cares to passengers who need extra assistance. Contact the TSA at least 72 hours in advance to have a TSA officer meet you at the airport and assist you through the screening process: TSA Cares | Transportation Security Administration
