Full of energy and music prowess, Journey is undeniably one of the best music groups in history, and their impact stretches all over the world. They never held back in any of their products, and every live performance brought euphoria to the ears of many.

Even if you aren’t a particular fan of their music, there’s a good chance you’ve heard it somewhere as they’ll forever exist in film, tv, events, and the playlists of their fans.

In this article, I’m going to focus on a particular niche from their discography and break down the ten best Journey love songs of all time!

1. Open Arms

Riddled with many spine-tingling melodies and a slow ballad-like tempo, “Open Arms” is one of the most recognizable records on this list. It’s more than a fan favorite; it’s a generational hit that continues to be appreciated by millions of people.

It offers lots of open space to give the instrumentation room to shine, and the vocals come with the range we’re used to hearing while driving, an emotion that can’t be ignored. The drums clash while the guitar hits reverberating chords and solo melodies that are top-notch.

2. Faithfully

An inspirational piano melody carries this record, offering a sentimental tone that’ll get you sunk into your feelings. In a similar fashion to a lot of their songs, “Faithfully” is a passionate record from Journey that’ll go down in music history.

The song appeared on their album Frontiers, which made waves in the music scene of the early 1980s. It’s another record that immediately comes to mind when the group pops up in conversation and is hailed as one of the best Journey love songs for many fans.

3. Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)

With one of the most adrenaline-fueled melodies on this list, Journey does an excellent job of telling a cinematic story through energetic production and signature vocals. “Separate Ways” has a rocking dynamic, yet the lyrical content is a bit touching.

Sometimes love doesn’t work out, and you have to split ways, even if you still care about them, and this record touches on the emotional hardships that come with this reality. Even with the lyric’s tone, it’s hard not to get into the upbeat energy of the song.

4. With Your Love

A slow jam that doesn’t shy away from the group’s usual big production style, this song is an excellent choice for a slow dance with your significant other. It offers many angelic piano melodies and spacey guitar melodies that trickle in the background.

“With Your Love” is one of the best Journey love songs out of their discography, and it comes with a classic quality that anyone can enjoy regardless of their music preference. I’d say this song falls under the title of good music that’s timeless in all of the best ways.

5. Any Way You Want It

“Any Way You Want It” boasts one of the catchiest and most memorable hooks out of Journey’s entire career, and its use in media continues to immortalize the record. Released in 1980, the song was included on their album Departure , which kicked off a lot of the band’s new sounds for the 80s era.

Offering a distorted guitar melody that gets stuck in your head, it keeps a pop-driven tempo that’s pretty danceable. In between the big layered vocals and consistent pop drums, your ears are blessed with multiple guitar solos that’ll keep you tuned in.

6. Send Her My Love

Many consider this record of being one of the best Journey love songs due to the emotionally gripping production value and touching lyrical content. It’s a great blend of slow jam qualities with the unique energy that can be found in all of Journey’s music.

The vocals don’t hold back on range, but they are delivered in a softer tone than many other songs on this list. A lot of Journey’s uptempo and energetic music gets most of the attention, but their slower jams, such as “Send Her My Love,” come with equal quality and pristine sound.

7. When You Love a Woman

Offering ethereal piano melodies and an introspective tone to the lyrics, the record is extremely relatable for many people that have fallen in love. With the dynamic tropes of a slow jam, it holds a downtempo that gets many people in their feelings.

The way the lead vocals are layered on the hook brings every element of the song into full focus, making it seem like the production is hitting an overwhelming part of the story. Once the vocals take a break, the song breaks into an orchestral and cinematic direction that takes the record to an entirely new level.

8. Don’t Stop Believin’

Likely the most popular and well-known song from Journey on this list, “Don’t Stop Believin’,” is a record that truly propelled the music group to a worldwide status. Although people love many of their songs, this record quickly rose to the number one spot for music lovers on a global scale.

Not only is it a production powerhouse that’s hard to match, but it’s a record that leaves an imprint on everyone who has heard it for the first time. Out of their entire discography, this is one timeless record that’ll forever be associated with the group’s influence on the music industry.

9. Wheel in the Sky

An undeniable bop from Journey, “Wheel in the Sky” provides a rocking tempo with perfectly layered vocals that’ll send chills throughout your whole body. It’s infectious in the sense that it makes you want to sing along, or at the least, you won’t be able to stop tapping your foot and nodding your head to the beat.

With plenty of suspense, waves of emotion, climatic hooks, and intense guitar solos, you get immersed from beginning to end. It’s also another record from their discography that boasts one of the most memorable choruses in music history.

10. Lovin’, Touchin’, Squeezin’

Another love jam from the group, this record offers sultry tones that give it a different flair and plenty of sweet notes you can share with a special someone. It also has a great swing to it which makes it a good choice for the dance floor.

Many of the groups’ more uptempo records get most of the recognition in conversion, but this song is easily in my top ten personally. Every one of their songs brings a unique production value, and this record is another that won’t be forgotten with passing generations.

( EDITOR’S NOTE:  This is the third installment in a three-part series recognizing Cystic Fibrosis Awareness Month.)

By Dirk Hoffman

Published May 22, 2024

The Argentieri family of Hornell, New York, is living proof of the wondrous scientific and medical advances that have been made in the treatment of cystic fibrosis (CF).

Colleen and Fran Argentieri have three adult daughters, two of whom have CF, yet they are thriving: working full time, getting married, and starting families.

But their road to bright futures was a winding one, sometimes paved with uncertainty.

Young Couple Learns of a Devastating Diagnosis

The couple’s oldest daughter, Alexandra Fitzpatrick, 33, was diagnosed with CF at 15-months-old.

“We had been taking Alexandra to a gastroenterologist pediatric specialist for 10 months and she was getting progressively worse, so we decided we needed to take her to the former Women & Children’s Hospital in Buffalo, and they shared with us they were going to do a sweat test for CF,” Colleen says.

The Argentieri’s went to their local library to read about CF and learned the people afflicted with the disease suffered terribly and many of them died before entering kindergarten.

They were devastated.

After the sweat test was performed in Buffalo, the Argentieri’s drove back home to Hornell. Shortly after they arrived home, they received a telephone call informing them the test results were positive.

The family returned to the lung center the next day to meet with Drucy S. Borowitz, MD, and an entire team of specialists — a pulmonologist, social worker, respiratory therapist and nutritionist.

Alexandra was immediately placed on enzymes to help with her pancreatic insufficiency.

That same week, Colleen, found out she was pregnant with her second daughter, Ashtin McKercher, 31. The couple had an amniocentesis performed and found out Ashtin did not carry the CF gene.

A few years later, their youngest daughter, Carley Gelder, 27, tested positive for CF prior to birth and immediately began going under treatments as a newborn.

Physician’s Advice Becomes a Guiding Principle

“One of the things Dr. Borowitz told us in that first meeting was not to let this disease define our children and not to put limitations on them. She said we could look at it as a curse or a challenge,” Colleen says.

“Those words really resonated with us, so they were involved in all kinds of sports. We allowed them to define their own limitations,” she adds. “They were pretty healthy when they were young, and their lives were fairly normal despite having to do the tough physical therapy two to three times a day.”

“My mom and dad never let us believe there was not anything we couldn’t do. My sister and I both played all the sports, we were starters on our soccer team,” Alexandra says.  “We played basketball and Carley was a cheerleader who won at States.”

When Alexandra became prepubescent at age 12, she started needing to be hospitalized from time to time, her mother says.

Carley had severe sinus issues and at the age of 6, she had her first sinus surgery. At 9, her pulmonary functions were dropping, and she had severe reflux, necessitating fundoplication surgery, where the stomach is sewed around the esophagus.

“Both of them had the Bard Button gastrostomy feeding tubes that go directly into the stomach. They would have nightly feeds to increase their weight gain,” Colleen says.

“Their daily routine was to remove the feeding tube in the morning, hook themselves up to their chest vest and do chest physical therapy exercises for 30 minutes, take two medications to help open up their airways so the mucus could come out when they did their chest PT, take more medications, including an inhaled antibiotic that they had to do through a nebulizer.”

“Then they would go about their day, come home and do chest PT again. In the meantime, they would also be taking enzymes every time they ate anything. And then at night we would hook them back up to the feeding tubes.”

Alexandra says despite the grueling daily routines, she and Carley led otherwise normal lives and rarely thought about the difficulty of living with a disease that may not be outwardly apparent.

“When I was starting to get very sick, I had a disabled use placard for my car and I had to use it a couple of times because I was failing and it was hard for me to walk without my oxygen,” she says. “I remember one time somebody had said something to me because I didn’t look sick. They had yelled at me in a parking lot and I remember thinking ‘it is very hard to live with an illness that is invisible because people just don’t understand.’”

Advancements in Science Offer Solution

At one time, Alexandra was on 11 different forms of medication throughout the day, her mother recalls.

“Despite doing all the right things, the disease just takes control of the lungs,” Colleen says. “When she was a high school senior, her pulmonary function was in the 40s and 50s. She went off to college and after she got a four-year degree, her health began to drastically and quickly decline.”

Alexandra had advanced lung disease. She was eventually placed in a medically induced coma, intubated and placed on a respirator, and flown by medical transport to NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Irving Medical Center where her condition could be stabilized, and she could be considered for a double lung transplant.

Because the respirator was not sufficient to keep Alexandra alive, she was also placed on a second form of life support, an ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) machine. An evaluation period was still needed to qualify for the transplant list.

Awakened from the coma after four days, Alexandra was required to get up and walk each day as part of the evaluation process in order to prove she was a viable candidate for a double lung transplant.

“Since she was in such critical condition, she was number one on the transplant list. For an agonizing three weeks, they kept her alive until a set of lungs became available,” Colleen says.

“The advancements in science afforded her a second chance to live. Weighing only 48 pounds at the age of 25, in prior years, she would never have been selected to receive a lifesaving transplant.”

Carla A. Frederick, MD, and Alexandra Fitpatrick at a Buffalo Bills game.

Carla A. Frederick, MD, left, and Alexandra Fitzpatrick at a Buffalo Bills game, just four months after Alexandra’s double lung transplant.

Advocacy For Patient Has a Profound Effect

Alexandra remembers being very scared at the time.

“I always took care of myself so when I ended up needing a transplant, that was kind of a shock to me. It came very quickly. I crashed and burned within six months.”

Alexandra was doing her chest physical therapy four times a day and was on IV antibiotics constantly.

“That got really hard because I had no life. It wasn’t until the end when I was very sick that I remember saying to my parents ‘I just want to be normal.’”

Borowitz was her primary doctor when she was young, and  Carla A. Frederick, MD , and physician assistant Lynne Fries took over her care when she was 20, Alexandra says.

“Dr. Frederick has kind of become one of my best friends. I remember when I was sick, she told me that no matter what happened she promised she would keep me alive, and she did,” she says.

“Both Dr. Frederick and Lynne fought to the ends of the earth to make sure I got to Columbia and Dr. Frederick wrote a letter to Columbia when I was transferred down there.”

Alexandra said the nurse practitioner who admitted her to the New York City hospital later told her that after reading the letter that Dr. Frederick wrote, he felt he knew Alexandra so well that he had to give her a fighting chance.

“He was the one who fought for me to get put on ECMO and to get on the transplant list,” she says.

“I remember asking him afterwards why he took a chance on someone he never met (because I was in a coma) and he said it was because of Dr. Frederick,” Alexandra says. “She is truly a remarkable human being.”

‘It’s Almost Like a Different Life’

After the double lung transplant, Alexandra’s life changed dramatically.

“It is a whole different world for me now because I do not have to do any treatments. It all just suddenly stopped — no more chest physical therapy, no more breathing treatments, no more IVs,” she says.

“I remember that life, but I don’t know what I would do if I had to go back to that routine. It’s a completely different mindset and almost like a different life. It seems like a lifetime ago that I had all of that.”

Alexandra works fulltime for Farleigh Dickinson University as the prospect manager of research and database. She is married to her high school sweetheart and last November, the couple welcomed a son, Brooks, their biological baby through gestational surrogacy.

When asked if she ever thought it would be possible to be working, be married and raising a family, Alexandra does not hesitate before answering.

“Yes, and I attribute that to my parents and Drs. Borowitz and Frederick, because they never made me believe that it would not happen.”

Both Alexandra and Carley also credit Fries, part of the adult CF care team, as being an influential component in their health care.

Among her duties, Fries regularly admits patients to the hospital and sees them on a daily basis.

“Lynne is the tough decision-maker and got things done personally that Carley and I (especially me) needed throughout the years. She never let us falter,” Alexandra says.

“The night that I was rushed to Buffalo General prior to my transplant, Lynne was the one behind the scenes calling in my team from Women & Children’s to make sure I was cared for properly to be kept alive. Though she is tough on us to make sure we’ve always taken care of ourselves, she is also our comic relief and biggest cheerleader.”

“We truly could not have asked for a better care team. Lynne is certainly one-of-a-kind and a very special person,” Carley says. “Throughout the years, she has continued to be an incredible advocate, as well as confidante to our entire family.”

“My sister and I are both so fortunate to have had both Lynne and Dr. Frederick continuously care for us,” she adds. “Neither one of us would have the life and health that we do without either one!”

Alexandra says she participated in clinical trial research at UB when her health was failing because she was hoping it might provide some relief for her.

“I was willing to do whatever it took to help myself, and now my sister, because she benefitted from those trials we participated in,” she says.

Timely FDA Drug Approval a Godsend

Trikafta, a fixed-dose combination medicine consisting of a chloride channel opener and two cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator modulators, was approved for use in the United States in October 2019.

Around that time, Carley Gelder’s life was taking a turn for the worse.

“I struggled just going to work. My pulmonary function was in the 40s. I get very emotional talking about it. I was drastically going down the same path as Alexandra. I did not have the energy to do anything.”

Carley had been a bit healthier than Alexandra throughout her life due to being able to be treated from birth and due to the advancements in treatments, her mother says.

But after going to college and getting a nursing degree, her health started to decline.

“She was working long hours, and she started to lose weight,” Colleen says. “She was struggling walking up steps, she couldn’t laugh without coughing. She had terrible coughing fits when she came inside from the cold.”

After being hospitalized in late 2019, Carley began taking Trikafta and her life took a 180-degree turn for the better.

“Taking Trikafta truly changed my life. Before, I was in and out of the hospital every three or four months.” Carley says. “Since I started taking Trikafta, I have not been back to the hospital.”

When she was sick, Carley was doing her treatments three times a day. Since taking Trifakta, she only does chest PT every couple of days.

“And that is only because I get stressed that I might get sick if I don’t do it. In reality, I don’t have to do chest PT unless I am feeling ill.”

“I still take my enzymes and my medications, but my overall day-to-day life is so different now,” Carley adds. “I don’t have to sit on my couch for 30 to 45 minutes and do my treatments to feel good, to feel like I can take a deep breath or prevent myself from coughing all day. It is very, very different than what I was living like before.”

Nursing Career Felt Like a Calling

Carley got married last December and works fulltime as a pediatric nurse.

“I always knew that I wanted to be in health care and wanted to make a difference for people,” she says. “Going into nursing felt like a calling to me.”

Carley sees Frederick, Fries and the rest of the CF team in Buffalo every three or four months for checkups.

“Honestly, we owe everything to Dr. Frederick, Lynne, and that team in Buffalo, including Dr. Borowitz who was my doctor my whole childhood. They are family to us,” she says. “With everything Alexandra went through and Dr. Frederick and Lynne fighting for her, there are not enough words to describe how grateful I am.”

“She fought tooth and nail for her. I remember seeing Alexandra in the ICU and she was intubated. Dr. Frederick just held my hand and stood by me. She didn’t have to say anything because she is just such a special, special person,” Carley adds.

“The way she advocated for Alexandra, but also being strong and that person that I needed at that time. There are not many people who are like her.”

Family Very Thankful and Feels Truly Blessed

Colleen feels that one of her and her husband’s responsibilities was to not only care for their children, but also to educate people about cystic fibrosis.

The family has participated in the Great Strides walks, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation’s largest national fundraiser, every year in Rochester or Hornell since 1992 (the year Alexandra was diagnosed with CF).

The team of “Alexandra’s Army” later evolved into “Argentieri’s Avengers.” After participating in the Great Strides walk in Rochester for three years, organizers took note of the amount of money the family was raising and asked it to start a Great Strides walk in Hornell.

“Over 32 years, in combination with all the teams, we have raised over $1 million — in a small town of about 9,000 people,” Colleen says.

The importance of being a tissue and organ donor is also a cause that is near and dear to the Argentieri’s hearts.

“Five lives were saved the day Alexandra received her second chance to live, and look how life is continued because of her having that chance,” Colleen says. “Not only would we not have her, but it is beyond me to think of our life without her and Brooks now.”

But beyond the educational endeavors and raising money for research, lies the pure bliss of a family who is whole once more.

“Who could have dreamt that our two children with cystic fibrosis would be at this point in their lives? — breathing easy, having careers, getting married and starting to have families. That truly is a dream come true,” Colleen says.

“It marks the first time in our lives, for my husband and me, that our children have all been well and healthy. We have a lot to be thankful for. We are so blessed.”

Journey of Transformation: My Experience with the Hoffman Process

Updated: Jun 5, 2023

Group meditation at the Hoffman Institute

Introduction:

"In 2013, I found myself standing on the threshold of an unexpected journey, an extraordinary voyage of self-discovery and healing at the Hoffman Institute. As I immersed myself in their renowned Hoffman Process, followed by a Q2 program in 2016, I found that I was not merely learning but transforming, restructuring the very ways I perceived and interacted with myself and the world. This journey took me through the intricate maze of my mind, illuminating the patterns woven into the fabric of my being, patterns that emerged from shadows of my childhood and shaped my behaviors, thoughts, and responses. It provided me tools to disconnect from these unconscious negative patterns that were impacting my personal relationships, communication, and ability to heal from past traumas.

But my journey didn't end there; it took an unexpected yet deeply enriching turn towards the integration of psychedelic medicine. This addition complemented the Hoffman Process and opened up new vistas in my healing journey, offering deeper insight into my subconscious mind and emotional landscape. The integration of these experiences led me to a more holistic approach to my mental and emotional well-being.

In the following sections, I share in detail the various phases of my transformative journey, from the crucial moment of recognizing my negative patterns to breaking free from them, to embracing my authentic self and consciously choosing my reactions in life. I delve into the ways the Hoffman Process has helped me heal past traumas, improve my personal relationships, and how the conscious integration of psychedelic medicine augmented my journey towards wholeness.

This blog is an intimate account of my transformative experiences, a testament to the profound changes the Hoffman Process brought into my life. As I share my path, I hope that my story may light a spark for others who are seeking their own transformation, inspiring them to embark on their healing journey."

Discovering My Patterns: Illuminating the Labyrinth Within

At the heart of the Hoffman Process lies the exploration of one's self, the deep dive into the recesses of our mind and soul to unearth patterns that have been woven into the fabric of our identities since childhood. As I stepped into this journey in 2013, I was vaguely aware of the shadows of these patterns, but it was during the Hoffman Process that they were brought into sharp relief.

Through carefully guided introspection and a series of structured exercises, the Process nudged me gently but firmly towards self-discovery. It started with a significant amount of self-reflection, as I was encouraged to delve into my personal history and explore my early life experiences. I examined memories, interactions, and moments of my past, looking at them through a new lens, an analytical eye. The facilitators at the Hoffman Institute were adept at guiding this exploration, challenging me to peel back the layers of my personal narrative and to interrogate the 'why' behind my automatic thoughts and behaviors.

I came face to face with self-sabotaging behaviors, which on the surface seemed protective but were in reality chains that kept me from reaching my full potential. Limiting beliefs that I had clung to for stability were unveiled for what they truly were: remnants of past experiences that were stunting my growth and shaping my life in ways that were no longer serving me.

What struck me was the realization of how these patterns were not just intellectual or emotional, but also manifested in physical and spiritual ways. The Hoffman Process shed light on my unhealthy emotional responses that were triggered by certain situations or people, responses that were born from early conditioning rather than rational thought.

The experience was akin to being given a map to navigate the labyrinth of my own mind, with the Process serving as a torchlight. Suddenly, aspects of my personality and behavior that had previously seemed random or inexplicable started making sense. I began to understand the origins of my knee-jerk reactions, my coping mechanisms, and the self-doubt that occasionally clouded my judgement.

This phase of pattern recognition was not easy—it demanded courage to face truths that I had subconsciously shied away from. However, it was the necessary first step toward real change, toward the liberation from my self-imposed chains. This understanding allowed me to recognize that I wasn't a hostage to these patterns, and that they were not defining factors of my identity. Rather, they were learned behaviors and beliefs that could be unlearned, a revelation that set the stage for the next phase of my journey at the Hoffman Institute.

Breaking Free from the Past: Unshackling Myself from Negative Patterns

After having identified my negative patterns during the Hoffman Process, the next stage was akin to embarking on a personal expedition to freedom. This wasn't a journey I undertook alone; the Process equipped me with a toolbox of techniques designed to help me break free from the unhealthy patterns I had recognized in myself.

One technique that proved crucial in this journey was cognitive reframing. This psychological strategy involves identifying and then disputing irrational or maladaptive thoughts, known as cognitive distortions. The beauty of this method is that it empowers you to reshape your thought patterns and challenge ingrained beliefs. Each limiting belief I had carried was examined, questioned, and then reframed into a healthier, more adaptive thought. It was as if I was an archaeologist, excavating faulty artifacts of thought and replacing them with structures that were stronger and more helpful. This method was a significant step towards freedom from the self-defeating narratives I had been telling myself.

Meditation also played an integral role in my journey. It allowed me to create a space of silence and tranquility within myself. In this quietude, I was able to listen to my inner voice and cultivate an intimate relationship with my thoughts and emotions. The practice of meditation also allowed me to develop mindfulness, a kind of gentle attention that stays in the present moment without judgement. This mindfulness was instrumental in helping me to acknowledge my thoughts and feelings without being swept away by them, thereby distancing myself from the negative patterns that had hitherto governed my responses.

Visualization was another tool that the Hoffman Process introduced to me. Visualization techniques helped me to conjure images that represented the healthier patterns I wanted to establish in my life. By visualizing these new behaviors and thought patterns, I was gradually able to integrate them into my life, replacing the negative patterns that had previously held sway. This imaginative exercise served to strengthen my belief in the possibility of change, and it fostered a positive anticipation of a future unburdened by past patterns.

Lastly, physical exercises were incorporated into the Process, demonstrating the important link between body and mind. Through activities that focused on releasing pent-up emotions and stress, I was able to physically express and let go of the emotional baggage that was associated with my negative patterns. These exercises, combined with the cognitive and emotional work, made my transformation an embodied experience, deeply ingrained in both my mind and body.

Breaking free from my negative patterns felt akin to shedding a heavy, burdensome backpack that I had been carrying unconsciously for years. Each pattern that was identified and then disconnected felt like a weight being lifted. By the end of this stage, I felt lighter, freer, and ready to embrace a new way of living unshackled by my past.

Embracing My Authentic Self: Unearthing My Inner Compass

After a cathartic journey of discarding my negative patterns, I found myself standing on the precipice of a new phase of the Hoffman Process: the reconnection with my authentic self. This was a voyage of self-discovery that took me beyond the façades and the learnt behaviors into the core of my being, the place where my genuine desires, values, and potentials reside.

With the negative patterns no longer clouding my perception, I was able to delve into understanding who I truly was at my core. I began to explore my inherent desires, those passions and interests that ignite a fire within me and bring a sense of purpose and satisfaction. This exploration was deeply introspective, requiring an honest conversation with myself about what truly moves me.

Alongside this, I ventured into uncovering my core values. Values are like an inner compass, guiding our decisions, behaviors, and shaping our worldview. Over time, these had become overshadowed by societal expectations, peer pressure, and the demands of daily life. The Hoffman Process helped me unearth these guiding principles, re-establishing them as the pillars of my existence.

This introspection led to the realization of my potential. I started to see the possibilities that lay within me, the untapped capabilities, talents, and strengths. Recognizing my potential was an empowering experience. It expanded my self-perception and opened up new pathways for growth and achievement.

Embracing my authentic self was like coming home. For the first time in a long time, I felt an alignment within me. It was as though I had been wandering off-course and had finally found the right path, the one that was genuinely mine.

The experience fostered a deep sense of self-acceptance. I learned to appreciate my unique traits, my strengths as well as my flaws. This acceptance stemmed from understanding that my worth wasn't tied to external achievements or approval but was intrinsic. This newfound self-acceptance nurtured a sense of self-worth and self-confidence that was resilient and unwavering. It was no longer tied to validation from others or contingent on external circumstances. Instead, it came from a deep understanding and acceptance of who I am.

Embracing my authentic self wasn't a single event but a journey that unfolded throughout the Hoffman Process and continues even today. It is a voyage of ongoing discovery, acceptance, and growth, a voyage that I am grateful to have embarked on.

Conscious Living: The Art of Mindful Response

Emerging from the journey of self-discovery and reconnecting with my authentic self, I found myself stepping into a new world illuminated by the lessons of the Hoffman Process. This new world was centered around conscious living: the practice of making mindful decisions and responses as opposed to falling back on old, conditioned patterns.

A significant aspect of conscious living that the Hoffman Process instilled in me was the development of emotional intelligence. This refers to the ability to understand, use, and manage our own emotions in positive ways to relieve stress, communicate effectively, empathize with others, overcome challenges and defuse conflict. It was like learning a new language, one that allowed me to understand and articulate my emotional landscape better. This enhanced emotional understanding allowed me to recognize and respond to my emotions appropriately, rather than being swept away by them.

Alongside emotional intelligence, the Process also honed my mindfulness skills. Mindfulness, in essence, means maintaining a moment-by-moment awareness of our thoughts, feelings, bodily sensations, and the surrounding environment. It was like adding a new lens to my life's camera, a lens that magnified the present moment and colored it with acceptance and non-judgement. This practice of being fully present helped me avoid getting ensnared by past regrets or future anxieties, and instead allowed me to respond to life’s situations from a place of peace and clarity.

Additionally, I learned to improve my decision-making skills, grounding them in a conscious choice rather than instinctive reactions. This involved becoming aware of the various options available in any given situation, weighing their potential impacts, and choosing the one that best aligns with my true self. Through this, I was able to step out of the cycle of reactive living and step into the empowering space of conscious choice.

Conscious living extended to all aspects of my life, but the change was particularly noticeable in my personal relationships. As I began responding to situations rather than reacting to them, I found that my communication with others became more thoughtful, patient, and compassionate. This newfound ability to communicate effectively, coupled with the empathy fostered by emotional intelligence, led to deeper and more fulfilling connections with those around me.

The shift from reactive to conscious living didn't happen overnight. It was, and still is, a continual process of self-awareness, self-improvement, and self-compassion. However, the journey is one worth undertaking, and the Hoffman Process served as my compass, guiding me along the path of conscious living.

Healing Trauma and Personal Relationships: A Journey of Transformation

Throughout my journey with the Hoffman Process, one revelation stood out starkly: the profound impact that unhealed trauma had been having on my personal relationships. Like unseen puppet strings, these past traumas were subtly shaping and steering my interactions with others, often leading to misunderstandings, unresolved conflicts, and strained relationships.

Understanding this link was a critical first step, but the real challenge lay in addressing these deep-seated wounds. The Hoffman Process provided me with the necessary tools to do this, guiding me on a journey of confronting and healing my trauma. This was not an easy path; it involved unearthing painful memories and feelings that I had tucked away in the recesses of my mind. It required me to summon up my courage, face these traumas, and strip away their power over me.

I was equipped with several therapeutic techniques to aid in this healing journey, including visualization, guided imagery, and mindfulness. These strategies allowed me to revisit my traumas in a safe, controlled manner, working through the associated emotions and gradually dismantling the hold they had over my present life. There was a particular emphasis on self-compassion throughout this process, learning to extend kindness to myself and to the child within me that had experienced these traumas.

This journey of healing was transformative on a deeply personal level. It felt as if I was shedding layers of old, scarred skin, revealing a healed and whole version of myself beneath. As I worked through my traumas, I noticed that they were losing their potency, their ability to trigger strong emotional responses or dictate my behaviors.

Yet, the transformation was not limited to the personal realm. As I healed, the quality of my relationships saw a marked improvement. I was no longer reacting to others through the lens of past traumas but was able to engage with them in a healthier and more authentic manner. My communication became more honest and open, allowing me to articulate my needs and boundaries more effectively. Additionally, having developed a better understanding of my own trauma, I found myself able to empathize more deeply with others' experiences and challenges.

The Hoffman Process taught me that healing is not a solitary journey. As we heal ourselves, we inadvertently create ripples of positive change in our relationships and in our wider community. It's a testament to the interconnectedness of our lives, a reminder that personal healing can be a conduit for broader transformation.

Integrating Psychedelic Medicine: A New Pathway to Healing

An unexpected, yet profoundly enriching chapter of my healing journey unfolded when I started integrating psychedelic medicine into my self-development repertoire. This exploration emerged as a complementary pathway, one that intertwined seamlessly with the lessons and tools I had gathered from the Hoffman Process.

Psychedelic medicine, often dismissed or misunderstood due to societal stigma, offers a unique and potent modality for accessing the depths of the subconscious mind. Psychedelic experiences, conducted safely and under proper guidance, helped me to uncover and navigate areas of my psyche that were often elusive or hidden.

Through these experiences, I was able to tap into deeper emotional landscapes, uncover hidden traumas, and even revisit memories from a new perspective. They offered a different lens through which to view myself and my past experiences, sometimes revealing patterns or beliefs that I hadn't previously recognized.

The integration of the Hoffman Process and psychedelic medicine proved to be a powerful combination. The tools I learned from the Hoffman Process – such as cognitive reframing, visualization, mindfulness, and emotional intelligence – provided a foundation upon which the psychedelic experiences could build. These tools allowed me to process and integrate the insights I gained from the psychedelic experiences into my daily life.

For instance, cognitive reframing helped me interpret and assimilate challenging experiences encountered during psychedelic sessions. Visualization and mindfulness practices empowered me to navigate the often abstract and intense experiences, providing a grounding anchor in the midst of emotional storms. Emotional intelligence enhanced my ability to understand and express the emotional shifts that these experiences often incited.

Integrating psychedelic medicine wasn't merely about the experiences themselves, but also about the periods of reflection and integration that followed. These were times to process what I had encountered, to dissect and understand the insights, and to apply them in a practical and constructive way to my life. Here again, the Hoffman Process proved to be an invaluable aid, providing me with a framework for interpreting and integrating these experiences.

The marriage of the Hoffman Process and psychedelic medicine opened up a new dimension to my journey of healing and self-discovery. This amalgamation created a more holistic approach to my mental and emotional well-being. By addressing the conscious and subconscious, the cognitive and emotional, I was able to explore and nurture my psyche in a comprehensive manner, leading to profound personal growth and transformation.

The Hoffman Process and Q2 program have undoubtedly been the gateways to a transformative journey in my life, a journey that continues to unfold and enrich me every day. These experiences were not so much an end in themselves, but rather the ignition of a life-long process of self-discovery, healing, and conscious living.

Today, the lessons from the Hoffman Process are not simply a memory, but an integral part of my everyday life. They are the compass that guide my decisions, the lens through which I view myself and the world, and the tools that enable me to navigate life's challenges and opportunities.

I have learnt to consciously choose my responses to situations, exercising the power of choice rather than falling into old, conditioned reactions. This has brought a sense of empowerment and control over my life, allowing me to navigate situations with grace and understanding.

At the same time, I constantly endeavor to stay connected to my authentic self, to honor my true desires, values, and potentials. This ongoing connection serves as a guiding star, illuminating my path and aligning my actions with my inner truth.

The healing journey is not a linear path but a spiral, where we revisit old wounds from a higher perspective, understanding them more deeply each time. As I walk this path, I have come to see that healing is not a destination but a journey, a process of continuous growth, understanding, and transformation.

The Hoffman Institute didn't merely provide me with a map for this journey; it taught me how to navigate, how to interpret the signs, traverse the terrain, and continue on, even when the path seems uncertain. It has equipped me with the tools and skills to turn obstacles into opportunities for growth and to transform pain into wisdom.

In sharing my journey, my intention is to shine a light on the path for others who may be standing on the brink of their own journeys of healing and transformation. My hope is that this account serves as a beacon, encouraging and inspiring you to take that first brave step. The journey may be challenging, it may be unexpected, but it is undoubtedly rewarding. And always remember, in the beautiful words of Rumi, "The wound is the place where the light enters you."

How LinkedIn's founder went from studying philosophy at Oxford to building a $26.2 billion company

  • Reid Hoffman is the billionaire cofounder of LinkedIn and an influential tech investor.
  • He has a masters in philosophy from Oxford and considers it useful to his approach to business.
  • His role as a prominent speaker and writer on entrepreneurship and careers is the result of a childhood ambition to be a "public intellectual."

The teenager who loved Dungeons and Dragons and philosophy is still a fundamental part of Reid Hoffman , one of the most influential people in Silicon Valley.

In an interview for Business Insider's podcast " Success! How I Did It ," the billionaire founder of LinkedIn explained that the ability to strategize he honed playing complex board games and the intense analytical skills he acquired studying dense philosophical tracts are crucial to the way he approaches business, despite lacking a standard business education.

Hoffman took us through his remarkable and unusual path.

Hoffman was born in Palo Alto, California, in 1957, and grew up in Berkeley. His parents were both lawyers and leftist activists.

journey love hoffman

Hoffman's babysitter introduced him to Dungeons and Dragons when he was 10, kicking off a new love of strategy and role-playing games. At 12, a game maker hired him for a one-time consulting role on a new game after he pointed out their last game's flaws.

journey love hoffman

"There's nothing obsessive like a kid," Hoffman told us, referring to his game-playing habit. "I spent literally days and days and days and days just doing that and that led me to a sense of strategy which was then, of course, very helpful when I later got to my entrepreneurial and business life."

He had what he now considers an early desire to be independent, and convinced his parents to send him to the progressive boarding school Putney, in Vermont. This wasn't like the Dead Poets Society — Hoffman learned blacksmithing, woodworking, and farming techniques in addition to his academic studies.

journey love hoffman

The Putney School 's magazine The Putney Post interviewed several of Hoffman's classmates and teachers in 2009, and learned that Hoffman was an introspective kid who displayed his intelligence in class discussions.

While Hoffman was picked on for what teenagers would consider his love of "nerdy" things, he has only had good things to say as an adult about his time at Putney .

He said there was "a very pragmatic kind of 'work on solving the problem' versus 'being an expert within a discipline,'" at the school, and that he is grateful for learning that you could take "this kind of entrepreneurial focus on a personal life," instead of associating his future self with a single title like "product manager," "artist," or "lawyer."

He headed back to California after high school to study at Stanford, where he found more people like himself, including his future fellow billionaire investor, Peter Thiel.

journey love hoffman

Hoffman met Thiel when they were sophomores, and at that point Hoffman had a reputation for being a "pinko commie" and Thiel a "libertarian wacko," as Hoffman joked in an episode of his podcast " Masters of Scale ." It was this contentious dynamic that proved to be the heart of their unlikely bond.

This friendship would go on to be one of the most impactful in Silicon Valley's history.

Hoffman graduated Stanford in 1990 with a bachelor's degree in Symbolic Systems, a uniquely Stanford concentration that essentially combines computer science and applied philosophy.

journey love hoffman

He decided that he was going to pursue a career path of "public intellectual," and went to Oxford as a Marshall Scholar to get his master's in philosophy. He completed his studies in 1993.

journey love hoffman

He told us that his favorite philosophers are Aristotle , Friedrich Nietzsche , and Ludwig Wittgenstein .

Hoffman said he realized at Oxford that if he went into academia, he would be focused on writing for an academic community rather than pursuing his long-held, highly ambitious guiding question, "How do I help humanity evolve?"

He does not remotely regret the education he received, but decided to go into tech. Why? He told us that while at Stanford, he saw how entrepreneurs were building businesses with the intention of improving the world, and he became a true believer.

After short stints at both Apple and Fujitsu, Hoffman decided to start his own tech company in 1997, a site called SocialNet. It was a place to find dates or connect with friends, making it one of the first social networks.

journey love hoffman

The combination of the site being ahead of its time and Hoffman's inexperience as a manager caused him to abandon the project in 1999 .

He considers it, however, an important crash course in both social networks in general and what it takes to run a company.

In December of 1998, Thiel told Hoffman he should join him at his pioneering online payments company, PayPal. Hoffman began as a founding board member and then joined full time in 2000, officially joining the so-called "PayPal Mafia" of future tech icons like Elon Musk and the founders of YouTube.

journey love hoffman

When eBay acquired PayPal for $1.5 billion in 2002, PayPal's stacked team of brilliant executives with alpha personalities went off to start their own companies, fueled by newly grown bank accounts.

Hoffman used his PayPal money to revisit the notion of social networks. He gathered four of his friends and former colleagues and founded LinkedIn in 2002 as a hub for ambitious professionals.

journey love hoffman

In 2004, a 20-year-old college dropout named Mark Zuckerberg approached Hoffman to see if he had interest in either his social startup The Facebook or his file transfer service Wirehog.

journey love hoffman

Hoffman was intrigued but didn't want to be a lead investor in a potential deal, since he was building his own social network. He called up Thiel and they met with Zuckerberg.

Hoffman told us that he and Thiel found Zuckerberg to a painfully awkward kid, but they made a deal — the first investment into Facebook — and Thiel joined the company's board.

The two have served as friends and advisers to Zuckerberg over the past 15 years, and Hoffman told us that he's never seen anyone else make such a radical transformation into a high-functioning and visionary CEO than Zuck.

"I am learning from a bunch of things that he does," Hoffman said.

Also in 2004, Hoffman married Michelle Yee, his girlfriend since his days at Stanford.

journey love hoffman

Hoffman told Wired in 2012 that  Yee prefers to stay out of the spotlight .

Hoffman acted as LinkedIn's CEO for four years but stepped back in 2007 once it had sufficient momentum, remaining as chairman. He gave the CEO role to Dan Nye, but replaced him with former Yahoo exec Jeff Weiner a year later. Weiner has remained in the role.

journey love hoffman

Hoffman and Weiner have had a close working relationship and Weiner became one of the most lauded CEOs in any industry.

"Part of what made it very clear very early that Jeff was the right CEO is that he had actually really started embodying, acting as a founder," Hoffman said.

LinkedIn went public in 2011.

LinkedIn maintained healthy growth in terms of users and innovative offerings, but was still lagging behind investors' expectations in early 2016. Hoffman and Weiner decided that what would be best for LinkedIn would be to join a larger company, and announced a $26.2 billion acquisition by Microsoft that June.

journey love hoffman

The deal closed last December and Hoffman joined Microsoft's board, with Weiner still at the helm and the promise that LinkedIn would act as an independent subsidiary of Microsoft.

Hoffman told us the decision was very difficult but that he and his executive team ultimately decided that after discussions with Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella and his team about his goals and theirs, "There was a natural alignment of those missions, and we realized that we could better reach our mission combined."

Parallel to his role building LinkedIn into the world's largest professional network, Hoffman became one of the Valley's most sought after and well-connected investors. He became a partner with the venture capital firm Greylock in 2009, where he's made deals like his highly profitable one in Airbnb.

journey love hoffman

Through his investments, Hoffman has built an incredible network of entrepreneurs and executives in tech.

Today, Hoffman is embracing more than ever his teenage desire to be a public intellectual who's at work changing the world.

journey love hoffman

As his buddy Thiel very publicly supported future US President Donald Trump, Hoffman became an increasingly prominent Democratic donor to combat Trump, and he told us that he views his political donations to candidates the same way he does his tech investments.

He's also emerged in the last five years or so as a leading public expert on entrepreneurialism and careers, writing two career guides  and hosting a popular business podcast called " Masters of Scale ."

Hoffman told us that he's learned that having a master plan for his career is nowhere near as effective as continuing to build and contribute to his network and seeing what comes of that.

It's because, he said, "that's the thing that most catapults you, in terms of your capabilities, in terms of your abilities to do things."
