The grill isn’t the only thing firing up this Fourth of July.

Record travelers will hit the highways for Thursday’s holiday but won’t escape the heat as much of the country will see historic highs — and thunderstorms that threaten to rain on some parades.

“A portion of the country will see nature’s fireworks, which will provide their own show of showers and thunderstorms,” AccuWeather senior meteorologist Tyler Mays told The Post.

Thunderstorms will likely span Montana, the Dakotas and Ohio to Virginia and Maryland, Mays said, and could reach New York City and southern New England.

“But it’s not going to be a total washout,” Mays added.

It will feel over 100 degrees in the south and out west, where heightened wildfire risks are prompting officials to consider fireworks and campfire bans.

Aside from a possible afternoon shower on Independence Day, the Big Apple is in for muggy temperatures in the low 90s.

The days leading up to the Fourth will remain in the 80s and the following weekend will see thunderstorms and temperatures lingering near 90.

Beachgoers should beware of dangerous rip currents along south-facing beaches on Long Island, Fox Weather reported.

Approximately 5.7 million New Yorkers hightail it out of the humidity for the holiday, contributing to a July 4th projected to be the busiest ever in terms of travel, according to AAA .

Over 70.9 million total travelers will head 50 miles or more from home, up 5% from last year and 8% from 2019. More than 60 million will go by car while air travel is also expected to set a new record.

The Transportation Security Administration expects to screen more than 32 million people between June 27 and July 8, a 5.4% increase from last year.

Friday was the 4th busiest day ever, with just under 3 million people passing through airports nationwide, the TSA reported.

“Summer vacations are in full swing, and with the flexibility of remote work, more Americans are taking extended trips around Independence Day,” said Alec Slatky, public and government affairs director for AAA Northeast.

The worst traffic delays are expected on Wednesday, July 3, and Sunday, July 7, according to data analytics firm INRIX.

A record 2.6 million Michigan residents expected to travel for July 4: What to know

Fourth of July — or Independence Day — typically ranks among the busiest travel times of the year in the United States, including in Michigan.

This year, July 4 lands on a Thursday. But the volume of people taking to the roads and the skies is still expected to reach record levels.

Here's everything you need to know to get ready for the 2024 Fourth of July travel rush.

How many people are expected to travel?

A travel forecast from AAA estimated that 70.9 million people — including 2.6 million Michiganders — will travel 50 miles or more away from home during the July 4 travel period. The travel period is defined as the nine days between June 29 and July 7. This two-weekend definition is different from years past, which only counted one weekend within the travel period.

Road travel in Michigan is projected to set records for the second year in a row and easily beat pre-pandemic levels. In 2019, 1.7 million people in Michigan were estimated to travel for the July 4 holiday.

Best and worst times to travel

Generally, AAA is advising drivers to beat the traffic by traveling in the morning, and to avoid rush hour traffic on the morning and afternoon of July 8. The best times to travel on each day of the Independence Day holiday period are as follows, according to INRIX , which provides data and insights on transportation:

  • July 1: Minimal traffic disruption anticipated
  • July 2: After 7 p.m.
  • July 3-4: Before noon.
  • July 5-6: Before 10 a.m.
  • July 8: After 7 p.m.

The worst time to travel by car during the Independence Day travel period is 2-7 p.m., according to INRIX. Specifically, July 3 and July 7 will have the greatest traffic delays, as travelers leave and return from their vacations. Here's when the worst travel times will be:

  • July 2: 2-6 p.m.
  • July 3-4: 2-7 p.m.
  • July 5: 11 a.m.-4 p.m.
  • July 6: 10:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m.
  • July 7: 2-8 p.m.
  • July 8: 1-5 p.m.

In Detroit, the worst congestion is expected to be on Interstate 94 west from Toronto to Detroit, on July 8 at 3:30 p.m. Travelers should expect to travel for five hours and 35 minutes between the two cities — a 29% increase from the typical travel time, according to INRIX .

Weather outlook for next week

It's early and the weather forecast could change. But, in Detroit, temperatures are expected to remain in the high 70s to mid-80s, with periods of mostly sunny skies and low to medium humidity. However, as of Monday, there is a chance of thunderstorms on July 4. The UV index is projected to be very high in Detroit from July 1-6, so make sure to wear sunscreen and other forms of sun protection.

In Traverse City and on Mackinac Island, the weather is projected to be partly sunny for most of the week of Independence Day, and there's a scattered chance of thunderstorms during the week and rain at the end of the week. Temperatures will be between the mid-70s to the mid-80s in Traverse City, and hover around 70 degrees on Mackinac Island.

While gas prices nationally, at $3.44 per gallon, are lower than they were last year, the same may not be the case for Michiganders. According to AAA, gas prices averaged around $3.62 a gallon in May — an increase from last year's July 4 averages, but a recent downward trend means that drivers may be paying around the same for a gallon of gas as they did last Independence Day.

Road trip checklist

According to AAA and Chicco, a manufacturer of baby products, a few tips can help keep small children and their families safe while driving during a busy travel period:

  • Check car seat fit for children and installation inside the car.
  • Secure loose items within the car.
  • Be prepared for emergencies or car troubles.
  • Map and plan your route.
  • Have entertainment ready.

DOH reports travel-related Dengue case on Oahu, marking fifth case this year

leger travel jobs

The Maui News

KAHULUI–The Hawai’i Department of Health (DOH) has confirmed one travel-related dengue virus case on O’ahu. The individual traveled to a region where dengue is known to be spread.

Symptoms of dengue can range from mild to severe and include fever, nausea, vomiting, rash, and body aches. Symptoms typically last two to seven days and although severe and even life-threatening illness can occur, most people recover after about a week. If you have traveled recently to any area where dengue is common and are experiencing these symptoms, please contact your healthcare provider.

There have been five confirmed travel-related dengue cases identified in the state (one on Maui, four on O’ahu) so far in 2024. During these case investigations, travel exposure came from various locations around the world where dengue transmission is known to occur. Multiple regions around the world are currently experiencing higher- than-normal dengue activity.

Dengue virus is spread from infected person to mosquito to person. While Hawai’i is home to the type of mosquitoes that can carry dengue, the disease is not endemic (established) here, and recent cases have only been found among travelers. Dengue outbreaks do occur in many parts of the world including Central and South America, Asia (including the Republic of the Philippines), the Middle East, Africa, and some Pacific Islands, including the U.S. territories of American Samoa, the Federated States of Micronesia, the Republic of Marshall Islands, the Republic of Palau and in many popular tourist destinations in the Caribbean (including Puerto Rico).

Anyone who plans to travel or has traveled to an area with dengue is at risk for infection. Currently, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) advises travelers to take the usual precautions when traveling to areas of dengue risk. This includes:

• Using an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)-registered insect repellent

• Wearing long-sleeved shirts and long pants when outdoors

• Sleeping in an air-conditioned room or room with window screens or under an insecticide-treated bed net

Some countries are reporting increased numbers of cases, so it is important, four to six weeks before you travel, to review country-specific travel information for the most up-to-date guidance on dengue risk and prevention measures for that country. Travelers returning from an area with risk of dengue should take steps to prevent mosquito bites for three weeks, and if symptoms of dengue develop within two weeks upon return, should seek medical evaluation.

In areas of suspected or confirmed dengue, Hawai’i DOH personnel (Vector Control Branch) conduct inspections and mosquito-reducing activities. Reducing mosquito populations reduces the chances of dengue being transmitted to other people. In areas without reported dengue cases, eliminating mosquito-breeding sites in and around your home is a good practice. Mosquitoes only need small amounts of standing water to breed. Common breeding sites at home include:

• Water-catching plants (such as bromeliads)

• Small containers

• Rain barrels

• Cups of water left outside

Simply pouring out containers of standing water eliminates the potential for mosquito breeding.

Finally, no matter where you live, if the area is prone to mosquitoes, wear long sleeves and long pants and or use approved EPA-registered repellents, especially at dusk and dawn to reduce your chances of mosquito bites.

For more information, please visit the Disease Outbreak Control Division (DOCD) website and Vector Control Branch (VCB) website.
