Chandpole, which is over three centuries old, is one of Pink City’s first established markets. It’s no surprise, then, that the market was built in the traditional style, with pink walls lining the perimeter. 

In fact, one end of the bazaar area is guarded by the Chandpole Gate, a majestic, towering gateway named after the market itself, while the other end is guarded by the Choti Chaupad. Better known as the “Pink City”, Jaipur is a city exploding with culture, life and people!

Bradley and I visited Jaipur on our way travelling through India in 2018 and quickly fell in love.

We spent 3 nights in the city, but only actually did one day of sightseeing (we were busy working the rest of the time!).

So, I thought it would be best to write a guide on the best places to visit in Jaipur in one day!

I will also take you through other elements of visiting Jaipur such as when to go, how to get there, and where to stay, to help make this a little Jaipur travel guide .

Where to stay in Jaipur

As you'll see below, many of Jaipur's best sites are in the heart of the city, with others located just on the outskirts away from the relative mayhem.

But as you only have 24 hours in Jaipur, it's definitely best to pick somewhere to stay that is close to the action . Luckily enough, there's a massive range of accommodation in Jaipur. Here are some top picks depending on your budget ...

Budget Choice - Sturmfrei Hostel

If you're looking to experience Jaipur to the fullest and want quick access to bars, restaurants and Jaipur's sites then this is a great hostel option. Dorm rooms cost less than $5 a night and rooms are clean and modern, with plenty of Indian authenticity thrown in. Simply put, it's the ideal place to meet other backpackers and crash out after a long day in Jaipur.

Mid-range option - The Livin

This is where we stayed, and can definitely recommend it. It's a quick 10 minute tuk tuk ride into the heart of the action, but far enough out that you can actually enjoy a peaceful nights sleep ! As you'll see below, we chose to visit Jaipur during Diwali, meaning the city was nothing short of MENTAL with fireworks going off late into the night. This hotel was just far enough away that we could escape the noise, and it's extremely well priced with friendly staff and a nice restaurant at the base.

Luxury pick - Rambagh Palace

If money isn't an issue on your visit to Jaipur, then check this place out! Relatively speaking, it isn't even that expensive to stay here. And, let's face it where better to stay at when in India than your very own Palace! Plus, many of the best places in Jaipur to visit are palaces, so why not just add one more to the list?! It includes swimming pools, luxury private bars and even a fitness centre. Plus it was once the home to the Maharaja of Jaipur!

How to get around Jaipur

As you will see, many of the best places to visit in Jaipur in a day are quite spread out. So it's best to plan your day ahead of time.

• Ola - If you pick up a local sim, then it's possible to use Uber/Ola to get around from site to site. You get the benefit here of guaranteed low prices and no need to haggle.
• Rickshaw drivers - You can also try your hand at negotiating with rickshaw drivers, but if they aren't giving you a realistic price, then you can order a rickshaw off Ola and Uber too! Meaning you can get that authentic Indian travel experience without being ripped off!
• Tuk tuk - Another fun way to get around Jaipur is via Tuk Tuk! And there is this cool Tuk Tuk tour offered online now which I think looks fun. Check it out here.
• Organised tour - If the thought of arranging your transport between sites fills you with dread, then you may be best off booking a full day or half day tour of Jaipur which includes many of the best places listed below. I have recommended individual tours in the post throughout. However, perhaps the best looking full day tour of Jaipur is this one here .

Top places to visit in Jaipur in one day

To see and enjoy all of the sites in the list below, you will need to start early and end late. But, if you’re in a rush and need to see everything in one day, then you can totally achieve that goal!

1. Amer Fort (aka Amber Palace)

Amer Fort is probably the most well-known tourist sight in Jaipur to visit . It’s big, it’s beautiful and you could easily spend a whole day exploring this wonderful fortress (not that you have the time to of course!).

You can get an Ola ride out to the fort for around $2-3 but the journey will take a while because of the traffic; especially if you visit in the middle of the day. As such, I recommend beginning your day in Jaipur with Amer Fort first because it’s furthest out.

From there, you can work your way back in.

Amer Fort offers both Muslim and Hindu elements and also is a rich maze of beautiful rooms to explore. You can also get an elephant ride to the top of the fort, but since I disagree with elephants riding on all levels, I am going to suggest you simply walk rather than take part in this cruel practice.

There are plenty of photo opportunities within the fort and you can go into the complex in these dark and dingy hallways and corners. I had a lot of people ask me if they could take my photo, like queues of people (I am not exaggerating), so you may experience that too if you are also a white female!

It’s open from 8 am until 6 pm and there is a light show in the evenings which is an extra fee . We didn’t make it to the light show, but I am sure it is interesting. So based on that, if you can't make it to Amer Fort first in the day, you could make it your last site for the day and enjoy the light show instead!

Entrance: 25INR for locals and 200INR for tourists

2. Jaigarh Fort

Located just above Fort Amer you have Jaigarh Fort, an equally as impressive fortress that offers even more wondrous views all out across Jaipur.

As you explore Amer Fort you actually catch glimpses of Jaigarh Fort as it sits forebodingly above it on a rocky outcrop.

It seems strange that they have two such impressive fortresses located so close to one another, but it turns out that there used to be an underground passage that connected the two.

I suppose making some sort of huge fortress complex that would prove even harder to conquer! Built in 1726, the primary motive behind construction was to protect Amer Fort and the Amber Palace.

Imagine that .... fortresses being built to protect fortresses! What a city

With just one day in Jaipur to explore the best places, it may take too long stopping at both Jaigarh and Amer Fort. Based on our experience, I can recommend visiting Amer and then catching some views of Jaigarh from down below if you feel pressed for time.

Entrance: 70 INR for locals and 150 INR for foreigners

Tour option: You can book a half day tour to Jaigarh Fort , as well as Nahargarh Fort (more on this below)

3. Hawa Mahal

Known as the “Palace of the Winds” this is another iconic tourist spot and should definitely make it on your list of the best places to see in Jaipur in one day.

In fact, you will likely find yourself driving through this to get to Amer Fort.

It’s just a nice place to get a picture but it’s also a massive tourist shopping street, so if you want some souvenirs for your time in Jaipur, such as clothes, shoes, jewellery etc, then this is the perfect place to find them.

As with anywhere in India, don’t forget to haggle . The general rule in India is that you can knock around 60% off the price they are giving you and start from there!

4. Jaipur City Palace

A museum and royal residence, city palace should definitely make it on your list of places to visit in Jaipur in one day.

This royal palace is located in the centre of the nine blocks that make up Jaipur. Did you know Jaipur was the first planned medieval city of India?

It should take you around 1 to 2 hours to visit the city palace. You can get an audio guide at the gate for 200, which is advised if you want to know more in-depth history.

Your ticket also includes entrance to Jaigarh Fort, mentioned above! It’s a striking fort and is particularly popular for the carvings on the walls which make it stand as an architectural wonder along with its rainwater harvesting system.

Entrance: 500INR for Foreign Tourists and 190INR for Indians

Opening Times: 9-5

5. Jal Mahal Palace Jaipur

This place is ... how do I put it ...

It’s absolutely beautiful. Like breathtaking. In many ways more extraordinary than the far more infamous Taj Mahal .

The Jal Mahal is a floating temple, sitting in the middle of the Man Sagar Lake on the outskirts of the city. It’s a grand palace made of red sandstone and is mostly submerged.

You don’t need long here, so make it a stop off point, or just stay for sunset; like we did!

Entrance: Free to observe from across the water

6. Central Park

Central Park is a green, lush park that offers you the chance to relax amidst the chaos of Jaipur all around you.

In fact, it’s the perfect picnic spot in Jaipur and I suggest you grab yourself a lunch to go , alongside a coffee and head to the park to get some respite before continuing your main sightseeing.

There are also some nice things to see in Jaipur's Central Park, including an Indian flag that's more than 200 feet tall and a stone sculpture park.

If you want to get some exercise in, then there's a running track running through the park as well as a small open air gym.

It's not uncommon to see locals running, practising yoga or even playing music in the park; it really is a lovely spot.

When leaving Central Park, you should head towards the Sawai Jai Singh Statue , located just next to a crossroads of two pretty busy roads.

It's also known as the Statue Circle, and is a monument to Sawai Jai Singh who founded Jaipur. At night time this spot is lit up and you can even grab some gelato and enjoy the cooler evenings.

‍ 7. Nahargarh Fort

If you want sweeping views of the city then this is the perfect fort to visit during your day in Jaipur.

It’s one of the many forts which acted as a defensive structure around the city.

I actually think Jaipur should be called the Fort City , rather than the Pink City, simply because there are so many incredible forts to visit!

Nahargarh Fort stands on the edge of the Aravalli Hills, and it opens from 10 to 6 every day.

There is even a food court and a restaurant at the top of the fort which offers excellent views. Whilst visiting you can also explore the glass palace and wax museum.

Entrance: 50 INR for locals and 200 INR for tourists

Tour Option: There is a half day tour that takes you to Nahargarh Fort as well as to Jaigarh Fort (another of Jaipur's best places to visit)

8. Albert Hall Museum

This is one of the oldest museums in all of Rajasthan and is also the state museum for all of Rajasthan.

Inside the museum you discover all sorts of artifacts including metal, stone and ivory sculptures, as well as traditional paintings from the region.

But the biggest highlight of the museum is, of all things, an Egyptian mummy!

If you don't get chance to go in, then the museum is still a worthwhile place to visit in Jaipur from the outside.

It's one of the most grandiose museums I've ever seen, reminding me a lot of the Prince of Wales museum in Mumbai .

It's a roughly 25 minute walk from Central Park, but if you want to get there quicker and avoid walking through the chaos of the streets it may be worth picking up a tuk tuk!

9. Dine in the Pink City

To round off your day exploring the best places Jaipur has to offer for a 1-day itinerary, I would choose to dine in the pink city!

After researching the "best budget restaurants in Jaipur" on TripAdvisor, we decided to dine at Hawk View restaurant.

We loved it so much that we went back a second time!

It’s a rooftop restaurant that, as it turns out, is also ranked number 10 out of 3000 restaurants in Jaipur; as well as being number 1 for cheap eats , so I knew it had to be good!

We were not disappointed. The food is delicious.

You can get a mix of local Indian food and Italian food. The drinks are good value, coming in at around 150 INR for a vodka diet coke.

But asides from great food and service, the thing that makes this place so great is the views that surround you.

In the distance, you can see the forts and other grandiose buildings all lit up. And on the night of Diwali, the sky was alight with fireworks which were pretty spectacular! A true bucket list experience that we won't forget any time soon.

I recommend heading hear either at sunset or after dark, to enjoy the night time Jaipur skyline at its best.

10. Explore markets in Jaipur

No one day trip to Jaipur would be complete without a visit to the MANY markets located throughout the city.

Known locally as "Bazaars" these markets are all vibrant, noisy and packed full of amazing gifts and souvenirs. As well as food and drinks.

With just one day in Jaipur, I recommend heading to these last, after enjoying a meal. Or, better yet you could stop off and buy dinner as you peruse the stalls.

Here's are two markets in Jaipur that I most recommend checking out ...

Johri Bazaar

This market is known for its beautiful jewellery. Indian jewellery is statement jewellery and it’s perfect for those who want something bold and bright. I personally love it and wish I could take it all home with me (it can be quite heavy!). You’ll also find handicraft items and cushions, bedsheets etc, all authentically made. Which is perhaps what I loved most about this market, the chance to buy something handmade, not in a factory.

This place is well known for selling Jaipur's famous blue pottery, brass statues and much more. So if you’re looking to purchase authentic antiques, then this market is considered the most genuine in all of Jaipur. Meaning that, for once, they are probably telling you the truth about what they are selling!

Should I take an organised tour of Jaipur?

Well, this all depends on your budget and how much time you have within your day of exploring.

One way to achieve all your Jaipur sightseeing ambitions is to get an organised tour from either a local company or an online site.

Booking a tour can be great if ...

• You don't want the stress of organising transport between sites
• You want a more comfortable/modern vehicle for getting around
• You don't have much time left to plan your own day trip of the bets sites

A full day tour like this one is a quick and convenient way to bust your way through all the sights and I actually think they are good value for convenience and the chance to meet other like-minded travellers. Plus, the guide who is taking you around will also have actual information about the places, which saves money on paying for guides at each site!

Jaipur Travel Tips and FAQ

When is the best time to visit jaipur.

Jaipur is it’s most popular during the Indian winter months of October, November, December, January, February and March.

At this time, the weather is pleasant, the crowds are relatively sized, and it’s an all round good time to visit. You can stop off at Jaipur whilst visiting the Golden Triangle of India; which includes Delhi , Jaipur and Agra .

Top Tip: If you can visit during Diwali (which falls in October/November) then do it! This is when we stayed in Jaipur and it was an awesome atmosphere, seeing the Pink City alive with music, lights and fireworks.

How do I get to Jaipur?

Jaipur is one of the top tourist destinations in all of India, so naturally, it’s easy to get to. Depending on where you are coming from you can get a bus, taxi, or even a plane to Jaipur.

• Buses - These run frequently all throughout India and we used a company called Red Bus to book bus tickets. You can pay for your ticket online via card and you don’t need to print it off which is really convenient.
• Train - The train network in India is great and there are train links to all over the country to Jaipur. If you consider yourself some sort of hardcore traveller, then maybe you’ll want to go with the lowest class, which is sleeper/non-AC. But be warned, these can get crowded and a little smelly.  So, if you want a more comfortable journey then I can recommend 3rd class AC or 2nd class AC. They are both the types of class Brad and I travelled on. If you are on a short journey, then AC sitting is fine too.
• Plane - You can fly to Jaipur from many airports including Delhi, Mumbai and Goa . Flights internally in India are quite reasonable (especially if you book in advance), so if you fancy fuss-free and quick travel, then a plane journey is a good choice. Check Skyscanner for flights.
• Uber/Ola - We booked an Uber ride all the way from Pushkar to Jaipur, which is by far the longest single private transfer I think we have ever taken! It came in at less than 1,399 INR (~$19) for a journey that took about 3 hours and I am so glad we did it!

Is Jaipur safe for tourists?

Overall I would say yes, we felt very safe when visiting Jaipur. But as with anywhere in India, there are a few important things you can do to ensure you and your possessions are kept safe. Including:

• Not flashing your money around in busy areas.
• Only taking vital documents and money with you around Jaipur (store the rest in your hotel/hostel).
• Make sure you get all your necessary jabs before travelling to India. If you get bit by a stray animal for example, it's important you have already had a rabies vaccine back home.
• Don't travel alone when after dark, always stay with friends.
• Don't do anything illegal! Sounds simple, but penalties for drug or alcohol abuse can be extremely strict in India.

What is Jaipur famous for?

Most tourists head to Jaipur to visit the many incredible forts dotted around the city, and all listed in the post above. It is also a great place to pick up handmade, authentic Indian crafts; such as rugs, jewellery and even antiques.

How many days do you need in Jaipur?

As you can see in the post, one day in Jaipur is long enough to see a large portion of Jaipur's best attractions. However, to experience it to the fullest I would recommend spending 3 days in Jaipur.

The location was central enough for us to tuk-tuk to most places without too much hassle. This is a great option for an adventure base at a budget price.
• Royal Heritage Haveli  (High End) The Royal Heritage Haveli, is a 4-star hotel, which has opened its doors as a hotel after more than 150 years as a boutique accommodation. This is an experience in itself. The interior of this hotel is unbelievable and will give you a palace to retreat to after visiting the other historic palaces and forts in Jaipur during the day.
• Fairmont Jaipur  (5-star)  If you are going to stay 5-star, there are few better places to do it than in Jaipur. For just over $100 USD you can stay in the hotel of your dreams making your stay in India a magical time to remember. The Fairmont is more of a castle than a hotel.

Okay, let’s get into this list of the top places to visit in Jaipur so you can start creating your ultimate one-day itinerary for Jaipur.

This fort is easily the most impressive of all architectural structures we visited while in Jaipur. A huge lake is located at the foot of the fort before a winding path leads visitors up towards the main courtyard. Goats and dogs run wild throughout the fort while thousands of pigeons flock to the perimeters where they are fed daily by locals.

Amber Fort or Amer Fort as it was referred to by our tuk-tuk drivers, has some impressive rooms and details. Arches and fine hand-made drawings and designs are spread throughout the fort. If you are on a budget, seeing the fort alone will be more than enough and it is free! Although if you have a little extra cash to splash the Amber Palace will set you back 500rp ($8).

This is definitely one of the best places to visit in Jaipur in one day and if you only have one day I highly suggest getting to Amber Fort. It should be your number one spot on the bucket list.

Sunset at Nahargarh Fort

Perched on the rugged Aravalli Hills overlooking Jaipur city is Nahargarh Fort, a majestic fortress that stands as a testament to the city’s rich history and architectural grandeur. Built in 1734 by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, the fort’s name Nahargarh translates to ‘abode of tigers,’ symbolizing its strength and grandeur. Nahar means tiger. Garh means fort. In English, this spectacular fortress translates to the Tiger Fort. Up in the hills of Jaipur, the Nahargarh Fort walls wind along the ridges of the mountains. Standing on the fort walls you will overlook neighborhoods brimming with intense action. If you arrive before sunset you can wander through the gallery or the wax museum.

As the sun set, we found ourselves overlooking a neighborhood, which bordered a huge sand dune. The homes on the edge of the sand dunes were almost submerged in sand. Hundreds of children played cricket and games on the dunes as we watched the last light of the day fade beneath the horizon. Definitely add this spot to your Jaipur one-day itinerary.

Amber Palace

The Amber Palace is an architectural marvel nestled atop a hill in the outskirts of Jaipur. Built in the 16th century by Raja Man Singh, the fort is an exquisite blend of Hindu and Mughal architectural styles, showcasing intricate carvings, expansive courtyards, and magnificent artwork. The palace comprises several remarkable structures like Diwan-i-Aam, Diwan-i-Khas, Sheesh Mahal, and Sukh Niwas, each offering a glimpse into the grandeur of a bygone era. Visitors are often mesmerized by the Maota Lake at the foothills, adding to the fort’s scenic beauty. Go on a Safari

This isn’t your average safari and I’m sorry if you are about to be disappointed. I am talking about an urban safari. Take a tuk-tuk anywhere in the city to your destination and the safari begins.

On the streets of Jaipur, you can expect to spot camels in the traffic, pigs eating the scraps, monkeys running riot, enormous cows causing traffic jams, well-fed dogs, masses of pigeons, mongoose, squirrels and an abundance of peacocks. I’ve heard the term urban jungle thrown around before but Jaipur is for real, an urban jungle.

Go rooftop hopping for sunset

One of my favorite nights in Jaipur was completely unplanned. We headed to the Hawa Mahal area and before we could make it to the rooftop cafe we were headed to, a man yelled out at us. He was indeed trying to befriend us so we would ultimately buy some textiles from his store.

Don’t be offended he is just working his corner. His name was Harish, he’s traveled all over the world and his secret sunset spot was incredibly cool. He hung out with us, offered us weed and became our best friend for the forty minutes it took the sun to set. He even took over my camera and shot a few photos for us.

Find a random rooftop and try and get on top of it for sunset. Beware monkeys!

Jaigarh Fort

The Jaigarh Fort, also known as the ‘Victory Fort’, stands majestically on the ‘Cheel ka Teela’ hills, offering a sweeping view of the Pink City, Jaipur. Built in 1726 by Jai Singh II, the fort was primarily designed as a defensive structure to protect the Amer Fort and palace complex. Its striking features include towering watchtowers, thick walls, and a strategic location, manifesting the fort’s military purpose. The fort is home to the world’s largest cannon on wheels, the ‘Jaivana Cannon,’ showcasing the military prowess of the bygone era.

Despite its austere exterior, the fort houses beautiful gardens, a water storage system, and palatial residential complexes inside, presenting an interesting contrast. A visit to Jaigarh Fort not only offers a glimpse into Jaipur’s historical military architecture but also provides a panoramic view of the city’s breathtaking landscapes.

If you are into history put this on your list as a place to visit in Jaipur. Get a guide and you will enjoy learning from a knowledgeable local. We visited the Jaigarh Fort before heading to Nahargarh Fort for sunset if that helps to plan your day out.

Nahargarh Fort for sunrise

The first time we visited the Nahargarh Fort we arrived at 6 am but found we were locked out. We still enjoyed possibly the most epic view of the entire week while hanging around on the outside walls. The moon was still visible before the sunrise and there was no-one around.

I didn’t expect India to feel exactly as it did during the moments these photos were taken. A vast, barren, peaceful, desert city. Although there were times it was anything but peaceful, like peak hour in a tuk-tuk.

9. Survive the tuk-tuk life

A tuk-tuk is going to be your best mode of transport unless you are the motorbike kind of traveler. Because there were two of us the price of the tuk-tuk worked out fairly cheap. A 20-minute ride can cost you a couple of bucks depending on your negotiating skills. We had a range of drivers, some more aggressive than others.

While we had no crashes we did ram a few people, but bumper cars is the norm in Jaipur so no worries. Aside from the incessant beeping, it was a fun experience competing in the city rally every time we were headed to a new destination. Coming from a country with road rules, beeping at the person in front of you who has nowhere to move may seem unnecessary, loud like it might be a sound you hear in your sleep.

However, enjoy it. This is how it is. Laugh don’t get frustrated and be nice to your driver he most probably knows the spots you won’t find in this blog post or any for that matter.

Ganesh Temple for sunset

The Ganesh Temple, also known as Moti Dungri Ganesh Temple, is a popular religious site located in the heart of the Pink City, Jaipur. The temple is nestled on the Moti Dungri Hill, named after the palace that shares the same hill. Dedicated to Lord Ganesh, the temple is unique as it houses a statue of the deity depicted as a child – a rare representation in Indian temples. Built in the 18th century by Seth Jai Ram Palliwal, the temple is renowned for its intricate carvings and architectural beauty that reflect a blend of Islamic, South Indian, and Rajput styles. The temple holds special significance for the locals and sees a surge of devotees, especially on Wednesdays and during the annual Ganesh Chaturthi festival. A visit to the Ganesh Temple is a spiritual experience, offering a serene retreat amidst the bustling city of Jaipur.

Ganesh Temple was lodged at the top of a mountain. A grueling, but short, set of stairs had us breathing hard by the time we made it to the top. We enjoyed views of the city on one side and watched the sun fade behind the mountain on the other.

Sun Temple for sunset

Aptly named, this is one of the best spots for sunset. The Sun Temple in Jaipur, also known as the Surya Mandir, is a serene sanctuary dedicated to the Sun God, Surya. Perched on the Galta Hill, this beautiful temple offers panoramic views of the surrounding Aravalli hills and the cityscape of Jaipur. The temple, built in the 18th century, displays an impressive blend of Rajput and Mughal architectural styles, with its ornate carvings and intricate design.

The temple’s tranquil ambiance is magnified during sunrise and sunset, as the Sun God is worshipped during these times. On Sundays, a special ‘aarti’ or prayer ceremony is conducted, attracting numerous devotees. In addition to its spiritual significance, the Sun Temple is a favored spot for bird watchers and nature lovers, as the area around the temple is teeming with native flora and fauna. Visiting the Sun Temple offers a unique blend of spirituality, natural beauty, and architectural marvel, making it a must-see in Jaipur.

The walk up from the entrance archway is owned by monkeys. They are absolutely everywhere and we even managed to find their godfather, The Monkey Man who has apparently been featured in several articles and documentaries. He fed the monkeys by hand and they seemed to trust him.

Along the steep pathway to the sun temple, families were living in tents, offering chapati to support themselves. We then bumped into one of the most epic characters of the trip. He was a yogi, claiming to have the trident naturally printed into his tongue and hand.

After each photo we took he chanted. He asked for money and more or less explained that he makes a living by looking like a genuine boss sitting on top of the hill.

The temple at the top is home to a family who tends to the building. They explained a little about the temple and less than subtly asked for a donation. The sunset was worth the small note I tipped into the box. From the viewing platform beneath the temple, we watched monkeys and goats running rings around the cows below.

The sun slowly cast a shadow on the hundreds of cricket games being played in the streets below. Easily one of the best places to visit in in Jaipur for checking out the sunset.

Play cricket on the street

I’m Australian and have played plenty of backyard cricket. I thought I could swing a bat. I can’t. When I faced a few older guys in a small courtyard I faced an over of balls. I hit none. I was clean bowled on the last ball.

Cricket is played all over Jaipur and luckily I was able to redeem myself in almost two hours of street cricket with a bunch of young kids and teenagers. We played with a real cricket bat but a plastic ball, which I happily smacked all over the neighborhood. They wanted me to keep batting when I got out to see who could be the next to hit the broken chair, that sat limply behind my awkward batting stance.

Playing games whether it be cricket, football or volleyball is a great way to gain some trust and make a friend. One of the fathers invited us in for chai and a snack. He was also a 7ft tall Indian, a gentle giant.

Become a chai guy

I’m not a tea guy, I’m hardly a coffee guy. But in India, you become a chai guy. For 10rp or 15 cents you can get a small cup of freshly brewed chai tea with milk.

It’s always good to take a break from the hot sun or whatever excuse you need to make up. It became the glue that held our adventures together.

Between morning and lunch, lunch and afternoon, we enjoyed a little chai. The best part about the chai tea is watching it get poured from almost a meter above the pot. A truly skillful art and one of the most theatrical hot drink preparation performances you will witness.

Wander the markets

Jaipur, often referred to as the ‘shopper’s paradise’, hosts a variety of bustling markets that reflect the city’s vibrant culture and rich heritage. Among these, Johari Bazaar is the most famous, known for its splendid collection of gems, precious stones, and exquisite traditional jewelry. Then, there’s Bapu Bazaar, a go-to place for Jaipur’s iconic block-printed textiles, blue pottery, and leather products. For a more eclectic mix of goods, visit Nehru Bazaar, which offers everything from footwear and textiles to perfumes and trinkets.

The Tripolia Bazaar is another must-visit market, particularly for its lac jewelry and locally made carpets and rugs. Exploring these markets is not just about shopping; it’s an immersive experience that allows you to witness the city’s bustling life, savor local street food, and appreciate the craftsmanship that Jaipur is renowned for. Monkey Temple for Sunrise

The Monkey Temple, also known as Galta Ji Temple, is a unique pilgrimage site nestled amidst the Aravalli hills on the outskirts of Jaipur. This ancient temple complex is named after the holy sage Galav, who meditated here, but it has earned its popular name due to the large tribe of monkeys that live in the vicinity. The temple, built in pink sandstone, showcases a splendid architectural blend of kunds (water tanks), pavilions, and domes.

The temple is also renowned for its seven sacred water pools, with the Galta Kund being the holiest, believed to never run dry. A visit during Makar Sankranti, a significant Hindu festival, reveals the temple at its vibrant best. I love shooting portraits but even if you are just an observer you are in a land of some unique characters. Taking photos often requires lots of interactions and I get to shake a lot of hands and have some interesting chats.

As always you need to be respectful and try and feel the situation. If you are in someone’s personal space and they are clearly irritated by the camera, apologize and put it away. Most people will be more than happy and give you a nod to take a photo.

Taste-test the Street Food

I’m no foodie and I can’t handle spice. You would think eating in India would be a struggle for me. However, as always I enjoyed the food and found several favorites that I went back to many times.

A samosa set me back 10rp, while Daal and Naan might cost you 60rp-150rp or $1-2. Lassies, a yogurt based drink are served out of terracotta cups, a great refresher. Lime soda is the drink of the town and to be honest wasn’t my favorite but when it’s steaming hot, why not.

The Hawa Mahal, or the ‘Palace of Winds,’ is an iconic landmark that adorns the city of Jaipur with its exceptional architectural splendor. Commissioned by Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh in 1799, this five-story palace is designed in the shape of Lord Krishna’s crown, as the king was a devoted follower. Constructed from red and pink sandstone, the most striking feature of the Hawa Mahal is its high screen wall filled with nearly a thousand latticed windows or ‘jharokhas,’ which allowed royal women to observe street festivities while staying unseen from the outside.

The architectural style is a blend of Rajput and Islamic design, presenting a magnificent façade that becomes especially captivating at sunrise. Today, the Hawa Mahal is not just an architectural wonder, but it also offers a peek into royal history through its museum. Whether viewed from the street or explored from within, the Hawa Mahal never fails to mesmerize visitors with its grandeur.

Water Palace/Jal Mahal

Situated amidst the serene waters of Man Sagar Lake, the Jal Mahal, also known as the ‘Water Palace,’ is a stunning marvel of Rajput architecture in the heart of Jaipur. Constructed in the 18th century by Maharaja Madho Singh I as a hunting lodge and summer retreat, the palace offers a splendid sight, with its red sandstone façade appearing to float on the lake’s surface. Its unique design consists of five stories, four of which remain underwater when the lake is full, leaving only the topmost level visible.

The palace features intricate carvings and a rooftop garden, demonstrating the architectural brilliance of the period. I think the best way to experience Jaipur in one-day is to start early at sunrise and come home after sunset. It will be a long day but there is just so much to visit. This is my recommended One day Jaipur itinerary :

• Morning: Amber Fort in the morning
• Lunch: Hawa Mahal and Pink City
• Lunch: Wander the markets near Hawa Mahal for lunch
• Afternoon: Jaigarh Fort in the afternoon
• Sunset:  Nahargarh Fort

Great guide! So informative, as always. Anyway, Jaipur is high on my list of places to visit in India, along with Mumbai. I love the fact that the city is pink, and the whole Rajasthan and Mumbai is the first thing I think of when India comes to my mind.

When in India, you will find that you are always very much on the move. The hustle and bustle of the country is like no other; yet it takes three times the usual time to do menial tasks like picking up a train ticket. And that is why people love it – it is truly unique and once emerged in the way of life it is a hard place not to love. But sometimes, you just want to have a moment of peace and step away from the hundreds of tourists and staring eyes of the locals. That solace can be found in Jaipur.

Now, it can’t be said that it’s chilled… but for India, it is! There is so much that makes Jaipur distinctive, from its architecture to its fabrics to the amazingly painted elephants you will see wandering down the main roads.

What’s the best time to visit Jaipur?

Summer in Jaipur is from  March to July  and temperatures reach up to 45 degrees Celsius. This is not preferable for the activities that you may wish to do there, unless you have a high toleration for heat!

From July to November  lasts the monsoon season, and in India as a whole it rains… a lot. However, Rajasthan’s monsoon season is much milder, so from the end of September to October  you can avoid the rain entirely, though it is a risk to take. Therefore, travelling in these months is best avoided if you can.

The most popular time to go is winter, from November to February . The weather is warm, dry and sunny, but the nights can be cool, so be ready for it! Good weather does mean a lot more tourists, so queues for popular attractions could be a lot bigger, but the atmosphere of the city as a whole is nice because everyone can get out regardless of the poor weather.

Furthermore, if you go in March, you can see Jaipur’s famous  Elephant festival , where painted elephants roam the streets and sports such as elephant polo take place! This occurs the day before Holi in March. Jaipur also has a k ite festival on the 14 th of January, which is the first day the sun is in the northern hemisphere. It is a true spectacle as the kites have glass shards which catch the light when in the sky… one to maybe watch from afar!

What’s good to know about Jaipur?

Jaipur is known as the pink city, and upon arrival you will not be disappointed by your expectations. It is in fact very pink. In fact, the colour is so entrenched in the history of the country that it is enforced in local laws!

One of the finest examples of the pink colour in Jaipur is the Hawa Mahal Jaipur, also known as the Palace of the Winds. It was built to resemble the honeycomb structure of a bee’s nest and got its name from the ‘cooling system’ design of the windows, which were designed to allow the breeze to blow through. However, windows were in fact installed into the palace during a renovation, meaning its name has lost all meaning. The palace acts as a prime example of Jaipur’s amazing architecture. It appears to be a great palace, but in fact it is all a façade. The structure is almost 2 dimensional and was built as a high screen so that women of the city palace could observe street festivals from inside and remain unnoticed from the outside.

One Day in Jaipur Itinerary

Start your day early, you have a fun day of activities ahead!

The Monkey Temple

A good place to begin is Galtaji, aka the Monkey Temple . If you are travelling round India, it’s likely you will have seen a lot of temples and maybe be a bit hesitant because of that, but this one is like no other. Situated literally in a rock face, about 10km out of the city centre, is an ancient pilgrimage site. If you get a tuk tuk from the city centre, it should cost no more than 400 rupees for them to drive you to the site, wait for you to visit and then drive you back. In total, it’s around a half hour drive each way, but it’s definitely worth it!

Upon arrival, you will be dropped on the outskirts of a town facing a big hill. You may think you have been tricked by the driver, but look for people selling monkey food, and the monkeys themselves, and you’ll know you’re in the right place!

You walk up the hill and reach a point where you can continue to the top or go ahead through a little village. The top will take you to a tiny temple with a 10 rupee entry fee. It’s not much to see, but the view  from there is worth the extra 10 minute walk. Carrying on through the village takes you down the other side of the hill. It’s a bit of a walk but you will reach a more built up area, then suddenly, out of nowhere, you turn around and behind you is a massive temple area, with pools filled with monkeys cleaning themselves and another one filled with people worshiping and praying. It is a true spectacle that is well worth the visit! A little tip though, people will try charge you for taking pictures. You can either tell them to go away, get over your reluctance and pay the small fee for a quiet life, or just not take pictures, but do not miss out on the memory of this place!

The Palace of the Winds

Upon arrival back to the city, take a wander past the Palace of the Winds mentioned above. You can go in, but when you only have one day it’s more of a photo opportunity. After all, it’s flat, there’s really not much to see! Local shop owners from across the road will encourage you to go onto their roofs to get a better view. In actual fact, the view from there is amazing, you can see right over the city as well as the surrounding forts, and all they ask in exchange is that you take a look in their shop. Obviously, as this is India, as usual watch your back and don’t be naïve to the fact that they will expect you to buy a little souvenir as thanks, but it’s well worth it!

Johari Bazar

Head for lunch via Johari Bazar (you can walk there from the Palace of the Winds). Here is a fab place to buy souvenirs; the street specializes in jewelry, clothing, craft-work and art. It’s a bustling, busy area and there are plenty of places to get yourself a good deal! For lunch, restaurants are hard to come by, but there is a fab place called Jain Patang Udyog  on the Haldion Ka Rasta street just off the main street. It serves Dal ki kachori with chatni, a local delicacy.

Jantar Mantar

After lunch head to the Jantar Mantar . This is a collection of astrological instruments all built to tell the time, from seconds to months to the year. The location is a UNESCO site and features the world’s largest sundial. The instruments are all still in working order, and it is fascinating to learn how the concept of time was developed. You can get a tour on the door from a registered tour guide, costing from 50-100 rupees per person depending on group size. It is definitely worth paying for a guide here as otherwise you will not gain insight into how the instruments actually work, although they are amazing just to look at, as well!

The Jantar Mantar is situated next to the City Palace . Entry into the palace is quite expensive, however if you don’t want to go in you can have a quick look! It is also all within a walking distance from the Palace of the Winds and Johari Bazar.

It’s best to hire a driver to Amer Fort , although you can get a tuk tuk here too! If you get a driver, they will be able to organize a tour guide for you, who you pay in tips. Alternatively, you can get an elephant ride up to the fort.

However, these run in the mornings only, so you would have to rearrange the day. Amer Fort is the one place where it would be recommended more than anywhere to get a tour guide ! The fort itself is amazing to look at and the view from it is amazing, too. But the architectural genius of this place is like no other, and to learn about this you need a tour guide!

From the design of the palace with hidden corridors so that the king’s 9 wives never had to cross paths; to the different bedrooms for summer and winter depending on the light; to the water pipe system that saved water for drought and is still in working condition today! There are so many wonderful photo opportunities and there is so much to see and learn, Amer Fort is a must see in Jaipur!

Amer Fort Light Show

End the day under Amer Fort watching the spectacular light and sound show which tells the story of Jaipur. Tickets are 200 rupees, and the show lasts around 45 minutes.

Where to stay in Jaipur?

Umaid mahal – heritage style hotel.

Book your stay in the Umaid Mahal – Heritage Style Hotel  or one of its counterparts (it is part of a small chain). It is a fab, authentic hotel with great breakfast, a small pool that is nice for a quick dip in the morning, plus the price is very reasonable. The best thing about the hotel is its décor. The outside is one big mosaic, and the inside is furnished with traditional furniture in a true Jaipur style . It also has a rooftop restaurant which had the best chicken tikka pizza going.

Best hostels

Jaipur is a great destination for backpackers and young travelers, and hostels around the city are surely the best place to stay if you want quality budget stay . It’s a great place to meet other travelers and explore the local culture. DAY TRIPS FROM JAIPUR

India is a country of immense cultural wealth, and no matter where you turn you will see something incredible. However, some sights deserve your attention more than others, so take them into consideration when planning your day trip from Jaipur.

If you have the time and energy, Agra as a destination is a no-brainer. Yes, it will take you more than three hours to get there, but the payoff is huge. The city is home to two fabled UNESCO World Heritage Sites – Agra Fort and the majestic Taj Mahal . The sensation you get when you first see these monumental buildings is indescribable, and you will immediately forget about the ride here.

Ranthambore

For animal-lovers, Ranthambore is something they absolutely must visit. This beautiful national park is a great getaway from the city crowds, and since you get a chance to see tigers and leopards in their natural habitat, the idea of this day trip becomes even more enticing. Head out on a safari and enjoy a day you will never forget.

Ajmer is a city about two hours from Jaipur, and it has loads of sights to visit. Chand Baori

Hands down, Chand Baori is the most beautiful stepwell in India. Numerous steps were created on its three sides, with an impressive pavilion on the fourth. Seeing this is like entering a fantasy movie or something like that, and if you want some photos that will make everyone back home jealous, this is the place to take them. After that, don’t forget to visit Bhangarh , a fort that is supposedly cursed and haunted by restless spirits.

Sanganer is the perfect place to do some souvenir shopping. It is very close to Jaipur and is completely dedicated to producing its unique fabrics which you can actually have printed out right there and then. It is also an important town for Jains, who have their temples scattered all over the place. Shopping and a bit of culture, doesn’t sound bad, now does it?

Extra tips for visiting Jaipur?

– Accept the fact that in Jaipur you are going to be paying foreigner admission prices which will cost a great deal more than for locals. Despite this, prices are all very reasonable!

– If you do have any extra time, hire a car and go watch the sunset from Nahargarh Fort , which is a short drive from Amer Fort. The view covers the whole city and the palace up there is worth a visit too.

12 Places to Visit Near Jaipur in One Day

Jaipur is blessed with awe-inspiring tourist places in India. When one has to take a break from their regular work and city life what can be a better place than heading out on weekends in Pink city. Opposite to it is located another attraction named Harshat Mata Temple which is a renowned historical sight one must pay a visit.  The temple was partially ruined so work to restore this intricate place is on. It is a temple of Harshat Mata, who is believed to be the goddess of happiness and light. The village is said to be baptized by the goddess with light, peace and immense happiness which still prevail in this village.

It’s better if you start early in the morning for your trip to Bhangarh as entry after sunset is restricted due to its ghostly stories. Built in the 17th century it is a beautiful fort that must not be missed! This enigmatic attraction is surrounded by the temples, greenery, picturesque mountains, water bodies and secluded chhatri which catches everyone’s attention. By Air – The closest Airport to Mandawa is the Jaipur International Airport which is 182 km away. The major airlines operating from here include Air Costa, Air India, Etihad Airways, IndiGo and SpiceJet.

Bus – Mandawa is well connected by bus and has private and government buses running towards the regions of Shekhawati and Mandawa.

The Rajasthan State Road Transport Corporation has several buses plying as many as 18 different routes. The Mahadev Travel Agency also has buses connecting Mandawa to other cities. 

Train – Mandawa has no railway station of its own. The closest railway station is the Jhunjhunu Railway station, which is around 27 km away. At present, there are six trains passing through the Jhunjhunu Railway Station and it is not connected to all parts of India.

A Perfect One Day in Jaipur Itinerary

Nestled in the Aravalli Hills, Jaipur is the capital of Rajasthan and one of the most visited places in the state. It is also part of the Golden Triangle Tour, India’s most popular tourist route. Jaipur, the Pink City of India, has so many places to visit that it will take at least three days to cover them comfortably. I had been to Jaipur twice. But I could manage only a day to explore this beautiful city both times. In this post, I am sharing my one-day itinerary in Jaipur that might help travellers like me who has only a day to explore Jaipur.

This list is made in the same order in which I visited those places. You can change the sequence as per your comfort and requirements.

Plan your movement before you start

You can start your trip either from Hawa Mahal or Amer Fort. If you begin with Hawa Mahal, complete your visit to City Palace and Jantar Mantar before lunch. All of them are within walking distance of each other. Or you can go to Amer Fort in the morning, followed by the other two forts (Jaigarh and Nahargarh Fort) and return to the city for lunch. Then proceed to the places inside the main town.

I preferred to start with Hawa Mahal. As you go through the detail of this itinerary, you will understand why I made the sequence like this. Now let’s begin our one-day trip to the Pink City of India – Jaipur .

Every place mentioned in the above list (apart from Jal Mahal) has an entry fee. You can also buy a composite ticket to avoid the queue everywhere.

There is one composite ticke t (Indian / Foreigner – ₹300 / 1000; two days) that will cover eight places. Four are on our list: Hawa Mahal, Jantar Mantar, Amer Fort, and Nahargarh Fort. The other four places covered in the composite ticket are Isarlat (Swargasuli Tower), Albert Museum, Sisodia Garden and Vidyadhar Garden. This ticket is valid for two days from the day of purchase.

How to move around in Jaipur

You can hire a cab for your full-day tour or an auto-rickshaw (tuk-tuk) to move in between destinations.

You can use Uber Moto to move around if you are a solo traveller. You can also rent a bike or a bicycle and explore yourself with the help of the map I shared above.

Start your one-day trip in Jaipur

Your first destination will be the iconic landmark of Jaipur – Hawa Mahal . It was built in 1799 by Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh, the grandson of Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, the founder of the city of Jaipur. The five-storied palace is constructed like Krishna’s crown with red and pink sandstone sitting at the eastern edge of City Palace.

This palace was built for royal ladies to watch parades and processions without being noticed by the public. There are 953 small casements in the facade of Hawa Mahal, each with a small lattice-worked pink window, balconies and arched roofs with hanging cornices. Those windows allow the cool breeze to blow through the palace and keep it refreshing and airy in summer.

This honeycomb-like building has five floors; the upper three floors are single rooms thick. The first and second floors have patios in front of the rooms.

Why should you start your day with a visit to Hawa Mahal?

The facade of the “Palace of Wind” is east-facing. That means you will get your best shot when light falls directly over Hawa Mahal in the morning.

If you want to explore Hawa Mahal inside, morning is the best time as light peeps through the windows and illuminates the room inside.

It is situated beside one of the busiest streets in Jaipur, so nothing is better than going there early and avoiding heavy traffic in late hours.

Wind View Cafe – this rooftop cafe opposite Hawa Mahal is a perfect place to click the best frame of the palace while enjoying your breakfast.

Jantar Mantar will be your next stop. It is the largest of the five observatories Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II made and has nineteen architectural astronomical instruments. In addition, it features the world’s largest sundial.

The monument features instruments operating in the three principal classical celestial coordinate systems. These instruments are designed to observe astronomical positions with the naked eye. They are an outstanding testimony of medieval India’s rich scientific and technical knowledge.

A guide is essential if you want to understand how those instruments function. Believe me, and you will be amazed to know how precise and accurate these instruments are.

Jantar Mantar is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the state of Rajasthan.

I recommend visiting there after Hawa Mahal while your shadow is still long and getting out of there before the sun is above your head.

Average time to visit : 45 minutes – 1 hour

By now, you are already impressed with the science and technology of eighteenth-century India. Now cross the road in front of Jantar Mantar and enter into the galore of royalty, heritage and grandeur of the Kachhawahas – The City Palace of Jaipur. City Palace was built simultaneously when Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh moved his court from Amber to Jaipur in 1727. From then till 1949, City Palace was the administrative seat of the Maharaja of Jaipur.

Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh shifted his capital from Amber to Jaipur because of the increasing population and shortage of water. He planned Jaipur city in six blocks separated by broad avenues under the architectural guidance of Vidyadhar Bhattacharya, a Bengali architect from present-day West Bengal.

The buildings inside the Palace complex are a blend of Rajput, Mughal and European architecture. Present-day City Palace is a unique and large complex with several courtyards, towers, pavilions, gardens, temples, museums and restaurants.

The most prominent and most visited structures inside the Palace complex are Chandra Mahal , Mubarak Mahal , Shri Govind Dev Ji Temple , Pritam Niwas Chowk and galleries like Sabha Niwas (Hall of Audience) , Textile Gallery , Arms and Armour Gallery , Painting and Photography Gallery , Transport Gallery .

Entry Time : 9:30 am – 5 pm (Day) / 7 pm – 10 pm (Night)

Entry Fee :

• Indian – ₹200(Day)/₹500 (Night) ;
• Foreigner – ₹700(Day)/₹1000 (Night)
• Child (5-12 yrs) – half of the adult entry fee
• Royal Grandeur (Chandra Mahal Tour) – Indian ₹1500/ Foreigner ₹2000

Average time to visit : 2 hours

Once you complete your visit to City Palace, you should have your lunch before proceeding to the second half of the day. You can go to Bardari , inside City Palace, for an al fresco dining experience, or you can head to Laxmi Mishtan Bhandar in Bapu Bazaar for an authentic Rajasthani Thali.

Jal Mahal will come on your way to Amber Fort. It’s a palace in the middle of Man Sagar Lake. This is another wonder made by Maharaja Madho Sing in the year 1799.

This palace is a five-storied building made of red sandstone, of which four floors remain underwater, and you can see only the top one or two floors above depending on the level of water.

Visitors are not allowed inside this palace, but you can go boating in Man Sagar Lake.

Amer Fort (Amber Fort)

Amber Fort, or Amer Fort, is located 11 km away from Jaipur town. Located on Aravalli Hill, this is one of the prime attractions of Jaipur. It was originally built by Meenas (a tribe found mainly in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh) and later ruled by Maharaja Man Singh I , the trusted general of Mughal Emperor Akbar and also part of the Navaratnas of the royal court of Akbar.

Mughal architecture greatly influenced many buildings inside the fort. Constructed in red stone and marble, this fort was the residence of Rajput kings till the early eighteenth century when Maharaja Jai Singh II shifted the court to Jaipur.

This palace was constructed on four levels, each with a courtyard. It consists of Diwan-e-Aam, Diwan-e-Khas, Sheesh Mahal, Jai Mandir and Sukh Niwas Palace. With its large ramparts and series of gates and cobbled paths, this fort overlooks Maota Lake, which was the source of water for Amer Palace.

Amer Fort was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site as a part of the group Hill Forts of Rajasthan in the year 2013.

Entry Fee : Indian – ₹25; Foreigner – ₹550

Jaigarh Fort overlooks Amer Fort and Maota Lake and is situated over an adjacent hill. Maharaja Jai Singh built the fort to protect Amer Palace, and it was named after him. A hidden passage connects Amer Fort and Jaigarh Fort, which was used as a hideout for the royal family in case of an emergency.

The main attraction of Jaigarh Fort is the “Jaivana” Cannon, which was the world’s most giant cannon on wheels of that time. Being 400 metres above Amer Fort, Jaigarh Fort provides an excellent view of Aravalli hills and Amer Fort down below.

A museum inside Jaigarh Fort exhibits royal photographs, stamps and many artefacts. The armoury chamber has a vast display of swords, shields, guns, muskets and a 50 kg cannonball.

Entry Fee : Indian – ₹35 ; Foreigner – ₹85

Nahargarh Fort will be your last destination before the day ends. This fort stands on the edge of Aravalli hills overlooking the city of Jaipur. Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh also built this as a place of retreat on the summit of the ridge above the city.

There are suites for the queens of Jaipur and the king himself inside Madhavendra Bhawan. The rooms are linked by corridors and still have some delicate frescoes. Nahargarh was also the hunting residence of Maharajas of Jaipur.

Jaipur wax museum is another attraction inside Nahargarh Fort. It has wax statues of Maharajas and Maharani of Jaipur with statues of freedom fighters, sports and Bollywood personalities.

The Light and Sound show in Amer Fort is a visual delight for tourists. The breathtaking play of light over the walls of Amer Fort with a dramatic background score and a baritone-voice narrative of Amer’s rich history, myths and folklores will ride you back in a time machine to the glorious era of Amer Kingdom.

Show Time : English – 7 pm; Hindi – 8 pm

Entry Fee : English – ₹200; Hindi – ₹100

This is where your one-day itinerary in Jaipur ends. You will be exhausted for sure but happily occupied with the rich history, culture, architecture and stories of the Rajput Kingdom. You can stop at Handi on MI Road for dinner before returning to your hotel. Or you can go to Chokhi Dhani for a memorable Rajasthani evening cum dining experience .

How to Reach Jaipur

Jaipur is the capital of Rajasthan. It has excellent rail, road and air connectivity with the rest of India.

Sanganer International Airport has direct flights from Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai and Bengaluru. It is 10 km away from the centre of the city.

The railway junction in Jaipur connects with various cities. You can enjoy the royal experience in Palace on Wheels , which runs between Delhi and different cities of Rajasthan.

Delhi is 270 km by road, and Agra is 240 km from Jaipur. Other important cities like Ajmer is 130 km, Jodhpur is 350 km, Udaipur is 390 km, Mathura is 220 km, and Gwalior is 330 km from Jaipur. Road conditions from Delhi and other cities are excellent for the most part.

When to visit Jaipur

Jaipur experiences a sweltering and dry summer (April – June). The temperature often crosses 40 degrees Celsius in summer. You can visit Jaipur throughout the year except for summer.

The monsoon is from July to September. At times there is heavy rain during the monsoon. High humidity with a temperature above 30 degrees may cause slight discomfort. September and October are the months when you can get a discount on everything, yet the weather usually does not cause any problems during your trip.

The best time to visit Rajasthan would be from November to March . This is also the peak season in Rajasthan. The temperature during this time is enjoyable. Nights can be chilly in December and January, when temperatures may drop below 10 degrees.

Where to Stay in Jaipur

I will recommend staying around the centre of the city. Hotels around MI road or in the calm locality of Bani Park will be the best options.

Zostel has accommodation near Hawa Mahal, which will be the best place to stay if you are a solo traveller.

Tips to Remember

• Expect a lot of walking, especially inside forts. So, dress accordingly and wear comfortable shoes.
• Hire a guide if you want to know more about the history and stories of Rajput rulers. An audio guide is available in all places.
• Some places need an extra charge to be paid for still or video camera use. Tripod could not be used without prior permission.
• If you are a student, carry your student ID. Entry fee in all places is half of the usual for students.
• This tour will be in a hurry, no doubt. But it’s quite doable. You may skip stopping at Jal Mahal as it will be on your way to Amer Fort, and you can go there after you visit Nahargarh Fort.
• You can add Galtaji Temple to this itinerary if you are a tireless ball of energy. But you have to start the trip at 6 in the morning.
• Chokhi Dhani village is 45 minute drive from Nahargarh Fort. If you are not interested in the Light and Sound Show in Amer Fort, you can go to Chokhi Dhani Village for a unique dining experience.
• If you want to experience an elephant ride in Amer Fort, you must go there in the morning.

Jaipur, also known as the pink city of India, is an engaging mélange of traditional and modern India. This gorgeous city is famous for its awe-inspiring palaces, majestic forts, lip-smacking food and desi bazaars lined with alluring shops. Plenty of tourists (including those on a babymoon ) visit Jaipur for a day trip due to its proximity to Delhi and Jodhpur. But given the sheer variety and volume of things to do in Jaipur, it is impossible to lay out a comprehensive plan for a ‘Jaipur one day tour’ without feeling overwhelmed. So what are the places to visit in Jaipur in one day? I have a perfect list chalked out for you.

But before that, here’s some important information for your Jaipur trip:

Best time to visit Jaipur

You must plan your trip taking into account the Jaipur weather. Jaipur summers are harsh and it is absolutely not advisable to go around checking out the tourist places in Jaipur. Therefore, the best time to visit Jaipur is during the winter months of Jaipur i.e. from November to February.

Best place to stay in Jaipur

It shall be ideal to carefully evaluate the many hotels in Jaipur before deciding where to stay in Jaipur. I recommend staying at one that’s situated close to the main tourist spots in Jaipur especially if you plan to wrap up Jaipur sightseeing in just one day. While it is difficult to zero down on the best place to stay in Jaipur, as the decision would be entirely based on your preferences, I suggest that you stay in a hotel or hostel on or close to the Mirza Ismail Road (popularly known as M I road). Also, if you are in a mood to splurge, consider staying at one of the Jaipur heritage hotels for a royal experience.

Places to visit in Jaipur in one day

Amber Fort or Amer Fort

First things first, let me clear the confusion that many seem to have – Is Amber Fort the same as Amer fort? Yes, it is!

The Amer fort is definitely the best tourist place in Jaipur. It is fitting to appropriate enough time for the Amer fort in your Jaipur day tour.

The fort overlooks the Jaipur city. Its external walls provide an impenetrable defence while the interiors of the fort area house the stunning Amer Palace, courtyard, gardens and temples.

A walk around the fort also provides a lovely insight into the lavish lifestyle of the rulers of Rajasthan – the Rajputs. The dazzling sheesh mahal, the intricate carving and the panoramic view of the lakes from the top impress every tourist visiting the Amer Palace.

Pro tip: Many tourists visiting the fort line up for an elephant ride to carry them to the top the fort. However, I strongly advise you to not go for it. Not only is it extremely time consuming but also extremely cruel on the poor animals.

After Amer Fort, you should continue on your Jaipur tour by making a quick visit to Jaigarh. Jaigarh, named after Jai Singh II will leave you in awe of the architectural brilliance of the medieval era. This fort was strategically built to provide security to the entire Aravalli area including Jaipur and places near Jaipur.  

Today, it is home to a stunning museum which has exhibits all the military and war utilities including all the weapons used at that time.

The highlight of this place is the Jaivana which used to be the world’s largest cannon on wheels.

Pro tip: Some of the steps inside Jaigarh are loose. Please tread carefully.

After you are done exploring Jaigarh, the next stop on your Jaipur sightseeing tour should be the famous Jal Mahal Palace. The Jal Mahal Palace is built in the middle of the Man Sagar lake. Although the palace has been converted to a luxury resort to which access is denied, you must stop at the banks and admire its beauty.

The Jal Mahal Palace floating over the calm waters of the lake is a photographer’s delight. Your Jaipur photos will be incomplete without a picture of this palace. Make sure you click a good one!

This majestic fort built along the Aravalli Ranges in Jaipur offers scintillating views of all entire Jaipur area. The architecture is as impressive as every other monument or fort built during the Rajput era. However, in my opinion, if you are short on time (which you most probably will be after a visit to the Amer Fort and Jaigarh), you might as well skip a visit to this fort.

The fort area is vast and a thorough visit here could easily cost you 2-3 hours. Moreover, the palace area now also possesses a Wax Museum that attracts hordes of tourists. The fort is also famous for being a filming location of many popular Bollywood films.

Pro tip: If you want to do justice to the diverse Jaipur attractions in just one day, skip a visit to Nahargarh. You won’t regret it. 

City Palace

After spending the morning on the outskirts of Jaipur, it’s time to explore the central tourist spots in Jaipur.

The City Palace is located in the heart of the area inside the Jaipur city walls.  ThIS marvellous Jaipur palace constructed by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II is a fine example of the Rajput architecture and one of the most significant historical places in Jaipur.

Although the palace area is pretty extensive, most tourists take a quick walk around it and move out. That is because, it’s architectural style is very similar to the fine structures you would have previously seen at Amer, Jaigarh and Nahargarh.

Plus, the most beautiful area inside the palace, the Chandra Mahal, unfortunately, has its own separate ticket and you will require special permission to get that ticket.

However, if you are a fan of museums, you should check out the museum inside the city palace. The museum area is categorised into an arts wing, a textile wing and an arms wing and holds some interesting exhibits from the royal era.

Jantar Mantar

Jantar Mantar is also situated within the walls of the Jaipur city, right next to the City Palace.

In my opinion, Jantar Mantar is one of the most interesting places to see in Jaipur. The reason for that is that, it’s not a typical historic place. Jantar Mantar has nineteen large constructions which were used as instruments to measure time, sun movements, eclipses etc.

It’s fascinating to see how interested and invested Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II was in astronomy.

The highlight at Jantar Mantar is the large sundial. It is the world’s largest stone sundial and is capable of determining the time of the day pretty accurately.

Pro tip: Please take the audio guide if you would like to properly understand the history of this place and the significance of each of the large instruments.

The Hawa Mahal, also known as the Wind Palace, is also located in the heart of the Jaipur city and is definitely one of the top things to see in Jaipur. The Hawa Mahal is not exactly a ‘mahal’ or a ‘palace’. It is actually a five-storeyed building with 953 windows!

It was built primarily to allow the royal women to enjoy street processions outside the city palace without being seen by the public.

Very few tourists enter the Hawa Mahal. Most just take a picture with it in the background and move forward on their Jaipur local sightseeing tour.

However, if you have some time on hand, after a long day of sightseeing, I strongly recommend you to take an internal tour of the Hawa Mahal as well. The entrance is from the Tripolia Bazaar. Keep in mind though that the Hawa Mahal gets crowded pretty easily due to the fact that it is a narrow building.

Phew! With this, you would have covered all the famous (read doable in one-day) Jaipur sightseeing places.

So here are some of the best things to do in Jaipur after a long day of sightseeing!

Shop till you drop

Quite literally, Jaipur has so many bazaars with so much to offer that your fatigue from visiting the many tourist places in Jaipur will disappear instantaneously!

My favourite bazaars are as follows:

Johri Bazaar

This is the best place to shop in Jaipur and offers a wide range of handmade jewellery that is sure to turn you into a shopaholic. According to many regular visitors to Jaipur, this is one of the best places to visit in Jaipur – not just for the wide range of jewellery sold here but also for its lively vibe which is highly representative of the Jaipur spirit.

Tripolia Bazaar 

This bazaar is known for its beautiful lac jewellery. Buy plenty of lac bangles here for really affordable prices. 

Bapu Bazaar 

This bazaar is the best market for textiles in Jaipur. Bedsheets and dress materials are available at throw away prices here. Bargain heavily.

Mirza Ismail Road (M I road)

Many small and medium-sized shops line this ever-busy street. This Bazaar is known for its wooden souvenirs and earthen pots.

The food in Jaipur is delectable and so much so that just writing about it makes me want to go back to Jaipur right away and hog sumptuously! Some places to eat in Jaipur from which you could choose from are:

Laxmi Mishtan Bazaar (LMB)

This is the best place to eat and buy sweets from in Jaipur. Try their mouth-watering ghewar and mawa kachori and pack some with you for your onward journey from Jaipur. If you are super hungry, have the Rajasthani Thali served at this place to experience the authentic taste of Rajasthan.

Shreenath Lassiwala

This is yet another highly-renowned place in Jaipur that you just can’t afford to miss. Here, they serve thick, yummy lassi in a big kullad (Earthen pot) Hundreds of tourists from all parts of the world and all classes of the society flock this place for its lassi which is offers quick relief after a day out in the sun.

Wind View Cafe

Situated just opposite the Hawa Mahal, this is the perfect place to relax after a long tiring day. Visit this cafe after sunset and enjoy mesmerising views of the beautifully lit Hawa Mahal.

Masala Chowk

My personal favourite area in all of Jaipur is the Masala Chowk. I can safely label this as the street food capital of Rajasthan! Hundreds of stalls beautifully laid out not only make this the most vibrant place in Jaipur but also the best way to sample Jaipur’s rich local cuisine.

Chokhi Dhani

One of the best places to visit near Jaipur – the Chokhi Dhani beautifully captures and showcases the Rajasthani culture and offers authentic Rajasthani food against a true Rajasthani backdrop! In order to be allowed entry inside the premises, you must reach this place early in the evening before crowds start pouring in.

Important tips for your Jaipur one day tour

• Most of the historical places of Jaipur look their best at sunrise. If possible, start off before sunrise to not miss the views. It will also allow you to spend more time at tourist places of Jaipur. 
• If history or architecture doesn’t excite you, choose not more than two places from the list of famous places to visit in Jaipur mentioned above and spend the rest of the day visiting temples, shopping or eating. You will still thoroughly enjoy your time in Jaipur.
• Buy a composite ticket which allows you entry to most of the must-see places in Jaipur such as the Amer Fort, Jaigarh, City Palace, etc. Ask for it at the ticket window of the first tourist place you visit.
• Expect to walk a lot. Wear appropriate footwear and carry enough water with you.
• Jaipur tourist attractions are all accessible by a vehicle. It is best if you hire an auto-rickshaw for the entire day. Bargain well with auto-rickshaw drivers. If that fails, book a tourist taxi for an entire day.

5. Chokhi Dhani

Chokhi Dhani is a luxury heritage resort that tries to bring home the essence of Rajasthani village culture and hospitality. It is located a little on the outskirts of the city on the Tonk Road. This garden was constructed in 1988 in the memory of Vidyadhar Bhattacharya who was the chief architect of the Jaipur city. It is believed that this place was once a vineyard of the royal family. 7. Ramgarh Lake

Ramgarh Lake is an artificial lake spread across an area of 15.5 square kilometres. This lake was once a major water supplier for the city of Jaipur. Being surrounded by forested hills, Ramgarh is a perfect picnic spot during March and October, when it is relatively cooler outside. One can indulge in wildlife safaris in the forest area which is home to animals like Nilgai, Chital and lions. You can also partake in boating in the human-made lake or birdwatching. 8. Chandlai Lake

Chandlai lake is a lesser-known lake situated on the outskirts of the Jaipur city on Tonk road. This lake is around 140 years old and attracts a lot of migratory birds. If you are a keen birdwatcher, visit it during December as you have a chance of spotting Pied Avocet (a rare bird species). This makes for a good picnic spot near Jaipur as it does not remain too crowded.

9. Sambhar Lake

Sambhar Lake is India's largest saltwater lake and is surrounded by the Sambhar Lake Town. There are vast stretches of land, and the lake offers a fantastic view of sunset and sunrise. This is an excellent place to indulge in some bird watching. You can set up camp beside the lake and spend hours watching flamingos who visit this lake in huge numbers while munching on some snacks. You can also visit the Shakambhari Devi temple while visiting this place to picnic near Jaipur.

10. Pink Pearl Water Park

Located on the Jaipur Ajmer Expressway, Pink Pearl Water Park is an ideal picnic spot. This is one of the biggest water parks around Jaipur and is popular among families. It is managed by the Chokhi Dhani Group and therefore is well maintained. You can spend an entire day here with your family or friends going through joy rides, adventure rides and slides, shake a leg in the rain dance section or lie and relax in the wave pool. The park has something for every age group.

11. Bagru Village

Bagru Village is the area surrounding the famous Bagru Fort. Located on the Jaipur-Ajmer road, this village is an ideal location for a day out. Here, you can witness the artisans of the great hand-printed textile industry at work. The Bagru village is known for producing beautiful block print handlooms. You can visit the shops, purchase the locally made prints and can also try out your hand at this age-old craft.

12. Bhangarh Fort

Bhangarh Fort is a 16th-century fortress in Rundh Bhangarh. It was built by the Kachwaha ruler of Amber, Raja Bhagwant Singh, for his younger son Madho Singh. The reputation of this place, as the most haunted place in India, precedes it. But during the daytime, it is a beautiful majestic fort. Entry into the fort is not allowed before sunrise or after sunset. You can head here with a group of friends or family and make an adventurous day out of it. Be sure to hire a local guide who will tell you some eerie as well fascinating stories. There are three stories to explore although most of the fort now stands in ruins. Despite the legends attached to it, the fortress is truly enchanting.

13. Samode Palace

Samode Palace is an architectural marvel as it beautifully blends the Rajasthani and Mughal styles of architecture. Despite being around 500 years old, it still exudes beauty. A part of the palace has been turned into a luxurious heritage hotel. This is perfect for a day excursion. You can revel in the elegant architecture of mirror work, the beautifully maintained garden, and even dine in luxury at the hotel restaurant. You can also shop for bangles in the surrounding town, a craft at which this place excels.

14. Siliserh Lake

Siliserh Lake is favourite picnic spot located in Alwar. Spread across an area of 7 km and is situated close to the Sariska Wildlife Sanctuary. You can pack your food and enjoy it beside the lake, against the backdrop of the Aravali hills. You can also partake in boating or sit and enjoy the beautiful view.

Jantar Mantar

It’s a must-see visit place and should be a part of your Jaipur itinerary for one day; it’s a UNESCO World Heritage site. Jantar Mantar is one of the one-of-a-kind solar observatories in the world! It was built by Maharajah Sawai Jai Singh II in 1738 AD and is still fully functional. The instruments are still precise.  It has the world’s largest sundial. It is popular around the world as The Wind Palace and was built in 1799 AD by Lal Chand Ustad, commissioned by Maharajah Sawai Pratap Singh. This iconic building is five stories tall and features 953 windows! It served as a screen for the royal women as they watched the processions or life on the street. Nahargarh Fort is extremely popular among the locals, especially the youth. Nahargarh Fort Sunrise and Nahargarh Fort Sunset experience are highly sought after. The fort covers a huge area and overlooks Jaipur City. It’s been restored beautifully. Madhavendra Palace is its main attraction and contains 12 identical quarters. It was a residential complex for Queens designed in a way that King could access any of them discreetly. What Is the History of Jaipur?

Unlike many other cities in India, the history of Jaipur dates back less than 300 years. Jaipur was founded in 1727 AD by Maharajah Sawai Jai Singh II and it is one of the few planned Indian cities, popular the world over as the Pink City. Initially, Amber or Amer was the capital of this region called Dhundad. The history of Amer as a capital of this region dates back to the 10th to 11th centuries. It is at a distance of 11 km from Jaipur. The need to shift the capital to Jaipur arose because of the increasing population of the Amer town and the scarcity of land. Maharajah Sawai Jai Singh II wanted to grow his capital into a great trading hub, therefore, he decided to build a new one close to Amer. He consulted several astrologers and city planners before finalizing the layout of the city.

The layout of Jaipur was guided by the ancient art of Shilp Shashtra. After the founding of Jaipur, he invited leading traders, Brahmins, and artists from all over the country to settle in his new capital. This explains why even today Jaipur is a leading center for Jewelry, handblock print fabrics & clothes, and handicrafts.

Why is Jaipur called the Pink City?

Jaipur wasn’t always pink ever since it was founded. The color pink was chosen when Edward Albert, the Prince of Wales was visiting Jaipur in 1876 AD. India was then a British colony. The king of Jaipur, Maharaja Ram Singh II thought it would be a welcome gesture to paint the city with a single color, not knowing that this shade of pink would stay on forever. If you want to avoid the rush at Amer Fort, you can Amer Fort at night. Amer is open for tourists between 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. called Amer By Night .

Tips for Jaipur City Palace

The best time to visit the city palace is post-lunch, you don’t have to walk around much. It’s located very close to Johari Bazar, so commuting is not a hassle. Don’t miss two huge silver urns made by Maharaja Sawai Madho Singh II to carry the holy water of river Ganga during his trip to England in 1902. Each of them weighs 345 Kg!!

Tip for Jantar Mantar

Don’t forget to hire a guide!! Without a guide, it’ll be difficult for you to understand how each instrument functions. It takes 30-45 minutes to complete the tour of Jantar Mantar .

Tip for Hawa Mahal

There are 953 windows in Hawa Mahal called Jharokhas in the local language! By the way, all the shops around Hawa Mahal sell tourist-oriented stuff like garments, bedsheets, souvenirs, etc. You will find only commercial quality in these shops. Bargain hard before you seal a deal else head to places that locals buy. Read the Jaipur Shopping Guide . The only shop worth recommending is Gulab Chand Prints. It is a famous shop selling hand-block-printed fabrics near Hawa Mahal and a trusted place in Jaipur for Sanganeri hand-block-printed fabrics, salwar suits, dresses, and shirts.

Tip for Nahargarh Fort

The palace section closes at 5 p.m. Visit Nahargarh Fort at around 4-4.30 p.m. After visiting the Madhavendra Palace section, head to the open-air Padao restaurant and enjoy the sunset & city views. The restaurant is run by RTDC – Rajasthan Tourism Development Corporation. It serves only beer and snacks. Amazing views are the best way to end your Jaipur trip. It won’t be a problem if you wish to leave at 7 or 9 PM. Do note that no public transport services or taxis are available for your return trip from Nahargarh Fort. Arrange for your pick up well in advance or ask for the cab to wait for you.

This is a great comprehensive guide to Jaipur. I love architecture and the buildings look so beautiful. My husband and I have talked about going to India at some point in the future, and visiting Jaipur should definitely be on the list.

Beautiful photographs! I’ve been to Amer fort thrice – it’s so beautiful! But, on my last visit, I was sad to see they had closed off most of the rooms due to vandalism. I really wish people would have more respect for our history and culture!

Indeed, that’s sad. I have already posted few pictures and even a post to raise this issue. It’s a persistent problem across all monuments in India. Built by Raja Man Singh I, the Amer Fort, often called the Amber Fort, is the prime location for Jaipur city tour. Located on a hilltop, this fort is rooted with a series of gates and paved paths.  The Maota Lake lies beneath this fort, which makes the craggy location of the fort more enticing. Nahargarh Fort

Jaigarh Fort

City Palace

Located alongside the City Palace at the heart of Jaipur, Hawa Mahal is another significant palace to visit in this Jaipur Sightseeing Tour. Standing elegantly amidst the Man Sagar Lake, Jal Mahal or the Water Palace boasts of its unexplained stories. Built in the 18th century by Maharaja Jai Singh II, it is a five-storey building with a stately pavilion and a terrace garden. Jantar Mantar

Located on the Jaipur-Amber highway, around 15 km from Jaipur, Gaitore is the afterlife-resting place of the valourous kings of Jaipur. It is the royal cremation ground of Jaipur and one of the main attractions of Jaipur city tour.

Isarlat or the Swargasuli was erected in 1749 by Sawai Ishwari Singh to commemorate a grand victory in a battle. Since then, this 140 feet tower of victory is standing upright in Tripolia Bazar.

Inaugurated on the 1st of June 1976, the screen of this meringue shaped theatre started with the screening of ‘Charas’ movie. Saint Galav, who is believed to one of the devoted followers of the god is said to complete 100 years of meditation in this place. Pleased with his tapasya (penance), the gods appeared here and blessed this place with an everlasting water source.

Later, a temple with seven holy kunds or ponds was built to mark the holy significance of the place. Every year, during Makar Sankranti, devotees from every corner of India gather at Galtaji and take a holy dip in the kunds. Galta Kund is the largest amongst the seven kunds and is also considered as the holiest.

The maharaja built this garden in 1728 to immortalise his love towards Rani Sisodia. Away from the hustle and bustle of the city life, this garden served as the pleasure place for the couple.

Exotic colourful flowers, magnificent layout and the enticing Radha-Krishna paintings in the garden makes it an ideal place to express love and affection.

Luminous water channels, multi-tiered galleries, opulent fountains, colourful flowerbeds and lofty shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva, Vishnu and Hanuman, made the garden an ideal sanctum for the queen. Serenity and self-possession still prevails in this magnificent garden, which is very well connected to all the major tourist places in Jaipur.

July-March is the best time to visit this garden. During this period, the garden blooms to its utmost gorgeousness with its exotic flowers.

Birla Mandir

Birla Mandir is dedicated to Lord Vishnu as well as his consort Lakshmi. The images of Lakshmi and Narayan sculpted out from one piece of marble are the highlight of this place for many. Americans mark Juneteenth with parties, events and quiet reflection on the end of slavery

These are foolish arguments, betraying ignorance of slavery’s savage toll and the long hard road toward more equal treatment for people of every culture. Even after President Abraham Lincoln signed the proclamation in 1863 and the new constitutional language was ratified on December 6, 1865, African Americans faced a harsh struggle to live free lives. It would not be long before many of their hard-won freedoms were wrested from them in the cruel grip of segregation and Jim Crow laws. To understand this day’s importance, it’s important to view racial injustice through the eyes of those who endured it.

Not much is known about the human at the center of this engraving, produced for a New York periodical by the artist James A. Taylor. But its title says a lot: “Selling a freedman to pay his fine at Monticello,” it reads — along with a date of January 19, 1867. In the short span of two years, Florida reacted to emancipation by passing a set of laws known as the “New Black Code,” which singled out freed slaves on charges of “vagrancy” and hit them with $100 fines, which they could not afford to pay. Governments would demand labor in = place of the fines, with $100 requiring about 6-7 months of indentured servitude to pay off. And so — more than a year after slavery had officially been abolished — it was possible to see former slaves once again hobbled and sold off for periods of time that must have seemed interminable.

How would it feel, to believe you had secured your freedom — and then find yourself on the block, tugged forward by a leather thong around your wrist and offered for sale to the highest bidder?

By the 1920s, small Black settlements and towns dotted Florida, some with thriving business districts and others mired in abject poverty — all of them vulnerable to horrific violence, such as the flames that lit the African-American sector of Ocoee for two days following an attempt by Black residents to cast ballots in the presidential election. Local leader July Perry — seen as an agitator by white Ocoee residents — was lynched as a warning to residents who wanted to vote but refused to pay poll taxes. In the ensuing hours, nearly every Black-owned home and business was burned to the ground. On Nov. 3, the Morning Sentinel’s headline read “TWO WHITES DEAD OCOEE RIOT.” But estimates of the African American dead ranged from 30 to 70. The community never recovered; the 1930 Census showed just two Black residents in a town that once was home to hundreds of Black families.

What would you do if you knew that you were putting your community, your home and your family at risk just because you chose to exercise the fundamental right of democracy?

As the 1950s-era Civil Rights Movement took hold, educated young African Americans were pushed into extraordinary positions — standing up against racial injustice and risking their futures, or turning a blind eye to others’ suffering. Florida A&M University students Patricia Stephens Due and her sister Priscilla made their choice: When told their activism could endanger their degrees, they doubled down. After one lunch counter sit-in in 1960, they refused to pay the fines assessed against them and launched one of the nation’s first “jail-ins,” allowing themselves to be incarcerated for 49 days in Tallahassee. “Our very souls are being taken from us by discrimination,” they wrote from the jail in March. Their punishment drew intense national attention and disapproval to Florida, inspiring many to join the student movement for civil rights.

We don’t need to ask you what you would endure in Patricia Stephens’ place: She proved, time and again, that she was willing to put it all on the line. And she suffered for it, including permanent eye damage from a point-blank tear gas blast. But she also lived to see a time when her own daughter could walk into any store or restaurant in the nation — and sign a copy of one of her best-selling books.

Yes, Juneteenth is a joyous festival. But it’s also a memorial, for all those who yearned, worked and fought for freedom. It should be celebrated by all Floridians, who now know that racism took a horrific toll on everyone in society, Black and white alike. And it should serve as an annual reminder of how far our society has come — and how much further we have to go.
