If you want to create days you will remember for the rest of your life - Lofoten is the place. The mountain summits tempt off-piste skiers, climbers, hikers and world-class cyclists. Lofoten is also one of Norway's northernmost spots for surfing.

Historically, Lofoten has strong ties to the Viking Age , and at the Lofotr Viking Museum you can travel back in time. At Borg, archaeologists have dug up remains of the largest house ever found from the Viking Age. The house is said to have been the seat of power of one of the most influential chiefs in Arctic & Coastal Norway 1000 years ago, and this has been reconstructed and is now a living museum.

Lofoten fishing has been, and still is, the lifeblood of the region . Here you can absorb the atmosphere in any of the traditional fishing villages or aboard one of the fishing boats. The stockfish from here is world famous, and is still used as a main ingredient in many local dishes and Arctic Adventure Cuisine.

At the same time, we see that many new, small, local producers of specialties grown or processed in the region are emerging. Some of the best of this contemporary produce has been integrated into the Arctic Adventure Cuisine dining experience.

Norway | the islands of lofoten, unlock the treasures of norway's mountains and fjords..

Lofoten Island

  • "Let me just tell you straight off the bat, Babsi is a gem. In fact, she may be the Hope diamond of guides. After enjoying a number of self-guided trips with R/W, Babsi is the first representative of your company that we have met in person. And if she is the face of R/W, then the company's success is assured. Over time, Babsi has earned the love and respect of all of the trail vendors which meant that we got the best table at the restaurant or the best cabin. She even arranged for an Orca sighting on one of the boat rides. Amazing! She is blessed with an outgoing personality as well as an attention to details. She is smart, patient, encouraging, funny, reliable, and adventurous. She's a true professional---a definite keeper!" - Sam S.
  • "Today was magnificent! All the pieces came together of the mountains in Lofoten. We experienced the essence of mountains by the shore. It was the mist of the fog. The sheep, the green, green grass, the smell of the ocean, the sound of silence with the oceans waves, the smell of the wet rock and the red kelp from the water, the norweigen tommy offering us waffles and coffee in his surfing B&B." - Jan Dekle

Welcome to the Arctic Circle!

Bodø is easily accessible from Oslo airport by plane (approx. 1.5 hours) and is the main point of entry for those travelling to the Lofoten Islands.

The town has a picturesque harbour, so enjoy a drink on the heated terrace of one of the waterside bars or cafés.

ClarionCollectionHotelGrandBodo

Conveniently located in the centre of Bodø, next to the waterfront and the tourist info office, a friendly welcome awaits at the Hotel Grand. Rooms are clean and comfortable. Included in your stay is a complimentary ‘afternoon tea’ of teas, coffee and cakes. In the evening there is also a complimentary, light dinner buffet on offer. For something more substantial, there are plenty of good restaurants within walking distance of the hotel.

Pick up you car today (rental to be arranged by yourself). Take a 3-hour ferry journey across Vestfjorden to reach the ferry terminal on Moskenesøya island. The ferry crossing is an experience in itself and is a great way to start your adventure. Enjoy views of the ’Lofoten Wall’, the name given to the archipelago, as it juts out of the sea like a dramatic granite wall.

Arrive in Mosekenes and drive 10 minutes to the village of Reine. Check into your Rorbuer and make yourself at home for the next three nights.

Reine Rorbuer

Each cabin at the Reine Rorbuer is uniquely decorated but all offer lovely fjord-views, wooden floors and a cosy atmosphere. Breakfast is included and served at the on-site restaurant. Wifi available in all cabins.

Start your day with a true Lofoten classic; the Reinebringen summit. Towering over the town, the view from the summit is iconic and probably the most well-known image of the islands. Descend the way you came, hop in your car and head south to the village of  Å (approx. 15 mins), the last stop on the E10 main road which snakes its way through the archipelago. Visit the Stockfish Museum or the Fishing Village Museum to learn all about Lofoten’s strong connection to fishing, and in particular, cod. Take a short walk out to Lake Ågvatnet, and enjoy a picnic on the small pebble beach.

Reinebringen Walk:  6.5km, ascent/descent: 625m/625m

Lake Agvatnet Walk : 3km, ascent/descent: negligible

A choice of walk awaits, or both could be completed with an early start. Drive from Reine to the start of the Kvalvika Bay hike (approx. 30 min drive) in the north of Moskenesøya. Take in views of the bay, which translates as ‘Whale Creek’ and of the Norwegian Sea.

Munkan summit can be found in the south of the island (20 min drive from Reine). This hike follows good paths passing countless lakes to reach the summit of Munkan. Sitting at 769m above sea-level, the views are breath taking.

Kvalvika Bay/Ryten Summit Walk:  10 km, ascent/descent: 900m/900m

Munkan Summit Walk:  13 km, ascent/descent: 950m/950m

Check out of your Reine Rorbuer and follow the E10 road to Ballstad (1 hour 10 mins) on Vestvågøya island. The E10 is a unique road linking most of the islands of the archipelago and is also a National Scenic Route. Pull into various laybys for stunning viewpoints and white sandy beaches.

Hike to the Ballstad Pleateau and Nortinden summit (459m). Follow a coastal path around protruding headlands, keeping an eye out for seals in Grænvika bay before ascending on grassy paths to the plateau. You are likely to find sheep grazing here. Continue to ascend gently to Nonstinden summit. The view really packs a punch.

Drive to Nusfjord on Flakstadøya island (30 mins); your base for the next two nights. Nusfjord is one of the best-preserved fishing villages of Lofoten, and has a shop, a cod-liver oil workshop, a sawmill and a forge.

Walk:  8km, ascent/descent: 440m/440m

Nosfjord Arctic Resort

All cabins in Nusfjord have a seating area complete with a comfy sofa and a handy fridge. Breakfast is served at the on-site Restaurant Karoline. After a day of hiking, relax in the wood-fired hot tub and enjoy the views. Wifi available in some cabins.

Drive to Haukland beach (40 mins), voted the best beach in Norway, with its sandy white shores and dramatic backdrop it’s easy to see why. A relaxed loop walk takes you from the beach, over an ancient pass to Uttakleiv, another sleepy fishing village with its own impressive beach. Return to Haukland via a good coastal path which hugs the Veggen headland.

Another option is a hike to the Nesheia summit for wide open views over the Nusfjord.

Haulkland Beach Walk:  8 km, ascent/descent: 220m/220m

Nesheia Summit Walk:  8 km, ascent/descent: 450m/450m

Drive to Svolvær/Kabelvåg from Nusfjord (1 hr 30 mins), your overnight location for the last two nights of your adventure. Svolvær is the capital of the Lofoten islands, and although it is the biggest town on the archipelago, it still has a charming small town feel.

Take a bus to Vagan, where today’s hike begins. Follow a trail through lakes and forests, all the way back to Svolvær. At the summit of Tjeldbergtinden (367m), enjoy beautiful views  over the Vestfjorden, and the town.

Walk:  8 km, ascent/descent 380m/380m

-DSC7441

These beautiful Rorbuer are located a ten-minute drive from the centre of Svolvær, at a peaceful waterside location. The charming cabins include a kitchenette and fridge. Breakfast is served at the in-house restaurant, which also offers great, locally sourced evening meals, cocktails and desserts.

SvinoyaRorbuer

These beautiful historical Rorbuer are a 5 minute drive from Svolvær town centre. Enjoy an authentic fish dinner at the on-site restaurant, or leave the car and head to the town centre to choose from one of the harbour-side restaurants.

Drive to the village of Gravermarka (40 mins) for the start of the trail to Svarttinden summit (736m). A long but steady ascent rewards with the most stunning views of the surrounding peaks and valleys. Up here the terrain seems almost Alpine, and you have a real sense of being on top of the world.

Drive back to Svolvær and enjoy your final night on the Lofoten Islands.

Walk:  8 km, ascent/descent: 750m/750m

Enjoy a final breakfast in Svolvær and reflect on your Lofoten adventure before checking out of your Rorbuer and starting your onward travel.

Drop your hire car off at Svolvær airport or ferry terminal and head back to the mainland by boat or plane. If you need any additional nights in Bodø we are happy to arrange this for you.

This trip has a carbon score of 14kg per person per night, meaning it’s one of our greenest trips! For comparison, a carbon count of 14kg is equivalent to 7 bottles of champagne. Families with Teens

The minimum age for this tour is: 12 Years

This tour is rated moderate. Walks tend to be on the shorter side (longest walking day is less than 13km) but the rough, and sometimes steep, terrain can make for slow progress, so shouldn’t be underestimated. Paths are a mixture of rocky, grassy, narrow, boulder-strewn and particularly after bad weather– muddy trails. Some short sections of trail require light scrambling (not exposed), this is detailed in your daily route notes. The ascent/descent is considerable, ranging between 220-950m each day. To get the most from this tour you should be in good physical shape and be an all-weather hiker! Be prepared with the right equipment; waterproof boots, walking poles and gaiters are a necessity.

Spend 1 night in a 3* hotel and 7 nights in 3* standard traditional ‘Rorbuer’. These are former fishermen dwellings which have been lovingly restored and are now used as accommodation. Each have comfortable beds (normally twin beds, double beds are rare), a bathroom, a fridge, table and chairs and normally an outside seating area. Some cabins also have a kitchenette.  If you require a twin room, a 2 bedroom cabin will be required in Reine & Nusfjord as the one bedroom cabins only have double beds. There will be a supplement payable for this of approximately $230 per person. Please let us know at the time of booking if you would like a double room or 2 room cabin in Reine and Nusfjord (a twin room cabin is available in Svolvaer). You will find an example of the Rorbuer we normally use below. If these accommodations are not available we will use an accommodation of a similar or better standard.

Single Rooms & Solo Walkers

This trip is not available to solo walkers due to the terrain encountered on some walks. Single rooms are not available on this trip.

7 breakfasts are included in the cost of your trip. Breakfast is always buffet-style with various options available. Expect a continental breakfast with bread, jams, pastries, yoghurt and muesli available. Usually there are also local meats and cheeses, eggs and fruit on offer. Dinners and lunches are not included so you have the freedom to choose from what’s on offer each day. There are plenty of options for dinner each night, most Rorbuer have an on-site restaurant and there will be restaurants near by. Lunch can be picked up from the local supermarket or bakery, and all cabins have a fridge to keep packed lunch items nice and fresh. Food in Lofoten features fish quite heavily, although there is usually always at least one meat and vegetarian option available on restaurant menus. The restaurants on Lofoten use locally sourced and fresh produce with pride -delicious!

Hiking trails on Lofoten are still quite primitive and way-marking is sparse. However we will provide you with turn-by-turn instructions for each walk, maps and access to our GPS smartphone navigation app, so you will have no problem finding your way.

  • 1 night in a 3* hotel and 7 nights in high-quality Rorbuer

Straight Talk

We want to make sure you're on the trip that's right for you. Every Backroads trip is unique and this one is no exception.

Our hikes through Lofoten's captivating rugged terrain climb rocky, uneven paths with some steep sections, many of which are spotted with mud or boulders. Vehicles or boats will get us to and from the trailheads, but the remote nature of these trails means we offer fewer route options. Ample trail support in the form of water, snacks and encouragement is provided by your Backroads leaders and local guides.

We ordinarily staff our trips with three leaders: two leaders out on the trail offering support—allowing everyone to have the experience they want, whether it's an easygoing interpretative walk or a rigorous hike—while the third leader moves the van from trailhead to trail end. This trip is a little different in that our routes are a combination of loop hikes and out-and-back trails that begin and end in the same location. This means that you'll still have the same two leaders providing excellent trail support without the need for a third leader to move the van. Occasionally we also hike with local guides, allowing us to offer even more support options on these routes.

The Lofoten Islands are rich in heritage and rustic charm, and while Backroads has selected the best properties in the places we visit, history and character often outweigh elegance and luxury in this remote corner of Norway. While two of our hotels, Nusfjord Rorbuer and Reiner Rorbuer—traditional waterfront rorbuer (fishermen's cabins)—offer simpler amenities than the typical Backroads property, they provide us with the greatest access to the best hiking in the region. It's also worth noting that these cabins are set up more like shared apartments, with private bedrooms and bathrooms, and a common living room area that includes a small kitchen, rather than typical hotel room—all part of the charm!

Norway’s Lofoten Islands Hiking Adventure

Norway’s Lofoten Islands Hiking Adventure

At a glance, untamed norse goddess, activity level.

  • What's Included

Our 2024 Norway Trip is Confirmed. Let’s Go!

You: Overworked professional who eats standing up in the kitchen.

Also you: NORSE GODDESS OF FJORD-CAUGHT TORSK.

Go above your nerve (and the Arctic Circle) as you explore soulful mountains, mysterious fjords, and pristine beaches with zero trace of tourist keychains on our women’s adventure and hiking trip to Lofoten, Norway.

Over the course of 8 days, you’ll hike steep trails to iconic summits, sleep in colorful fishermen cabins (restored Rorbu) and coastal hotels, strengthen your body with local Norse cuisine, kayak deep into the heart of a fjord, and spend hours at sea catching the freshest dinner of your life.

Feel free to refer to yourself as Birgit from here on out.

The Lofoten Islands are slung across the Norwegian Sea, far above the Arctic Circle. It is a lonely, untamed wilderness that gifts visitors with Northern Lights in winter and midnight sun come summer.

You’ll be glad you stair-climbed to so many episodes of Schitts Creek – the rugged terrain thrusts you high above fjords, beaches, and vibrant villages (with opportunities for scrambling). We’ll summit Reinebringen, Mount Ryten, and Festvågtind followed by a paddling adventure deep into a fjord to explore the mountains from below.

Dine on traditional and locally sourced meals every day (expect lots of fish – the foundation of Lofoton’s civilization) and try your best to pronounce hårføner after few glasses of Akvavit. On your final day, trade hiking pants for fisherman’s coveralls as you reel in a catch and cook it all up in a local home with your sistas.

lofoten adventure tours

Day 1 - Welcome to Norway

Welcome to northern Norway – the gateway to the Lofoten Islands! Meet as a group in the lobby of our waterfront hotel for evening introductions and to share an invigorating dinner. Your Explorer Chick guide and local Norwegian guide will review the upcoming week and kickstart the SHE-nanigans.

Jet lag doesn’t stand a chance.

Accommodation : Waterfront hotel Meals : Welcome Dinner

Day 2 - Ferry to Lofoten and Hike to Reinebringen

Rise and shine Explorer Chicks – it’s island time! Grab packed breakfasts and lunches before a short walk to catch the ferry. Kick back for the 3-4 hour journey as we cruise across the Vestfjorden.

We’ll arrive in Moskenes ready to start our hiking adventure. Our objective? Reinebringen – one of the most iconic views in Lofoten. Thanks to a government funded project, the hike is a power stair climb with steps expertly constructed by Sherpas from Nepal. After freaking out over the summit view, we’ll kick back at the local cafe enjoying coffee or a beer.

Day 1 in Lofoten closes out with a drive to our first Rorbu – a traditional fishermen cabin that hugs the shores of the fjords beneath the mountains. (We won’t judge you for Instagramming the crap out of it.) Rorbu housed fishermen from all over Norway as far back as 1890. Don’t worry – they’ve been restored to the point of not smelling like cod.

Hiking : 2 miles, 1,476′ elevation gain/loss Hiking Time : 4 hours

Accommodation : Rorbuer (A colorful restored Fisherman Cabin) Meals : B-L-D

Day 3 - Kayaking the Reinefjorden

Pump up your paddling arms with a hearty breakfast. You’ll explore the secret inner-most curves of a fjord via kayak over the course of 4 hours. Peep mountaintops, birds of prey, and rugged beach shores from sea level while wondering how your life got so freaking good.

Come afternoon, return to the Rorbu for a traditional, locally sourced dinner.

Accommodation : Rorbuer (Same as Day 2) Meals : B-L-D

Day 4 - Hike to Kvalvika Beach and Mount Ryten

It’s another iconic day in Lofoten . Enjoy a drive to Kvalvika beach for a 45-minute hike before the ascent to Ryten. This summit has everything Lofoten is famous for – ridiculous beaches, towering mountains, turquoise fjords, and a perfectly jutted rock you can hook your legs over for the Gram.

If your muscles are hatin’ on you from yesterday, no worries! You can chill on the beach and enjoy the crashing waves. JUST DON’T FORGET ABOUT US.

Next, we carry on to our new digs for two nights, where we finish out the day in a steamy hot tub. Rest up with a modern hotel experience with incredible waterfront views. Bonus – they alert us if and when the Northern Lights make an appearance.

Hiking – Distance : 5 miles, Elevation Gain/loss: 1,805′ Hiking Time : 5 hours

Accommodation : Hotel (and with a little luck catch the Northern Lights) Meals : B-L-D

Day 5 - Hike Mount Hoven and Kick it on the Beach

Enjoy a slower morning with a relaxed breakfast. Lace up your boots for the second-to-last hiking adventure to the top of Mount Hoven. A direct path up and down gives us plenty of beach time. Grab your swimmie if you’re feeling bold to dip above the Arctic Circle! If you’d rather stay dry, sip on a coffee and soak up the scenery.

Dinner is super-special this evening with a 3-course Norwegian meal.

Hiking – Distance : 2.5 miles RT, Gain: 1,205′, Time: 4 hours

Accommodation : Hotel (same as Day 4) Meals : B-L-D

Day 6 - Hiking and Exploring Henningsvær

Final gains day! Hike to the tippy-top of Festvågtind to enjoy a unique view of the small inhabited islands that make up Henningsvær.

After breakfast, take a 30 minute transfer to Henningsvær and the hiking adventure. Today is flexible – if the terrain is too tough or the weather blows, there is an optional viewpoint half way up the hike that feels close enough to a summit. The total hike, if possible, takes 5-6 hours. The viewpoint takes 2-2.5 hours (including time for photos at the top!). The terrain is rocky and steep, with a small amount of exposure to the summit. But the trail is well worn and easy to follow, given it is one of the most famous hikes in Lofoten.

Take the afternoon to explore Henningsvær, one of Lofoten’s most iconic towns with a population of just 500. Henningsvær is home to Norway’s iconic Klatreskole – the school hardcore Norwegians travel to for instruction on climbing, skiing and mountaineering. Of course, it’s also home to shops and bakeries, primed for a carb crawl.

After filling up on mind-blowing seafood, we’ll drive to our second Rorbu and final accommodation change in Kabelvåg. Evening dips in the ocean are encouraged!

Hiking – Distance : 2.5 miles RT, Gain: 1,775′, Time: 5-6 hours

Accommodation : Rurbuer (Your second enchanting old fishermen cabin) Meals : B-L-D

Day 7 - Fishing and Dinners with Locals

The reason people settled on these imposing islands in the first place isn’t the spectacular scenery. Nope it’s what lies below the surface of the bountiful water: THE FISH. After many days of hiking and exploring, we spend a few hours out at sea literally trying to catch our dinner. Wait, what? Yep! After our little fishing expedition, we’ll be invited into a local home to dine – sea to table, baby.

Accommodation : Rurbuer (Same as Day 6) Meals : B-L-D

Day 8 - Farewell Lofoten

All good things must unfortunately come to an end. During our 2.5 hour drive to Harstad/Narvik Airport, we’ll share our unforgettable memories and bad jokes from our untamed, wild paradise.

Plan departures after 10am.

Meals : B Transportation : 2.5 hours to Harstad/Narvik Airport

Description

Lofoten autumn adventure.

Join this 8 day arctic adventure in Lofoten Islands in Northern Norway. Highlights of the trip include autumnal landscapes, jagged mountains, grand vistas, colorful fjords and the chance of experiencing the greatest show on earth, the Aurora Borealis aka Northern Lights. This is a tour with a small group of only 6 participants. This gives the optimal experience!

The Lofoten Islands are located at the 68th and 69th parallels north of the Arctic Circle in Northern Norway. This archipelago consists of seven principal islands and the area of land covers about 1,227 / 474 square miles, with a total of only 24,000 inhabitants. The natural beauty of this incredible landscape offers will present us with the possibility of exploring colorful fjords, jagged mountain peaks, unique beaches and the world renowned Arctic light.

Our basecamp  will be in Reine on the island of Moskenesøya. This is a world class location, and the likes of National Geographic, Lonely Planet and The Huffington Post and have listed this very village as one of the most scenic villages on earth. One look outside your bedroom window, and you will understand why – incredible granite mountains rising straight out of the fjords, traditional fishermen cabins and the location just oozes of great Norwegian history.

If we are blessed with starry nights and clear skies, we will be able to capture the elusive and strikingly beautiful Aurora Borealis aka Northern Lights as she dances seductively on the night skies.

Speaking of weather, Lofoten is notoriously unpredictable. Conditions and light changes constantly, so please be sure to read our “must-bring” clothing and gear lists listed on www.lofotentours.com

On this trip we will explore the finest areas in Lofoten, from Reine in the south, to Svolvær in the north. We will explore waterfalls and lakes with amazing backdrops of jagged mountains. The highlights will be non-stop!

GUIDED BY CHRISTIAN HOIBERG

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get there ?

The easiest way to get to the meeting point is via Oslo Gardermoen airport (OSL code). From there, you fly to Harstad/Narvik Evenes airport (EVE code). Domestic flights in Norway can be purchased from www.sas.no , www.norwegian.no

What level of photography is required ?

All of ours tours, workshops and masterclasses are open to beginners as well as professionals. Our only criteria is that you have a great passion for photography, and have the energy and motivation to be on the go every day and night.

What should I bring ?

Since we are exploring the high arctic and northern Norway archipelago’s, you have to be well equipped for all kinds of dramatic weather including rainfall. Bring comfortable, warm and waterproof outer layers such as Gore-tex and thin insulation. A complete list of recommended clothes as well as camera gear will be provided upon registration. We don’t have clothes or shoes available for renting.

Will I experience snow or ice ?

No. The winter months in northern Norway are known to generate a great amount of snowfall, but in September its too early for that. You will get explosive fall colours though.

Will I see and photograph the Northern lights?

Yes, most likely. September is one of the best times to photograph the Northern Lights and we will do our best to make sure you capture it on this trip.

What kind of weather can I expect ?

The weather and climate in northern Norway is renowned for being extremely unpredictable because of it’s many local weather systems. This means conditions can change within minutes and kilometres, also resulting in very dramatic light and photographic opportunities. Lofoten has a much milder climate than other parts of the world at a similar latitude, such as Greenland and Alaska. This is due to the temperature of the water of the Gulfstream. The coastal climate results in mild winters and cool summer temperatures. Traditionally, January and February are the coldest months with an average temperature of -1 degrees celsius. In September however, the average temperatures are aprox 10-15 degrees celsius

What camera gear should I bring?

At the very least, bring your own camera, lenses, tripod and a laptop. A detailed list of recommendations will be provided upon registration. If you are considering upgrading or investing in new camear gear prior to the trip, feel free to ask us for advice.

What is the itinerary going to be like ?

We don’t operate with a fixed itinerary on any of our workshops. It’s a full on photography tour/workshop, so the activities are planned around sunrise, sunset and night photography excursions. The whole archipelago is packed with locations, so the weather and light conditions will decide where we will go. That being said though, we have a list of locations we will visit throughout the week, but we don’t know which day or time of day we will visit that specific location.
