As a result, Jodhpur has a newly restored yet ancient stepwell, located just north of the clock tower. Built in the 1740s and called Toorji ka Jhalra, it sat stagnant for years until the owners of the new heritage boutique RAAS hotel purified the pool and sandblasted the steps. The area has been turned into a contemporary square with cool cafes and shops, including a Good Earth home decor store and a branch of Jaipur-based Gem Palace. A secret door at the RAAS hotel will take you directly to Step Well Square. Step Well Cafe has the same owners as RAAS and provides the best view over the stepwell. It serves Continental and Indian cuisine, plus alcohol. However, its menu is quite limited.

Stroll Along the Streets of the Blue City

Unlike the crowded clock tower area, the blue part of Jodhpur behind the fort, known as Navchokiya, is refreshingly quiet and devoid of tourists. Magnificent Umaid Bhawan Palace, completed in 1944, was one of India's last grand palaces to be built. The royal family of Jodhpur still occupies a section of it. Otherwise, you may be disappointed as you'll get to see very little of the palace.

Spice Paradise is a spice shop run by a kindhearted husband and wife team (their unique masala chai blend has been refined and perfected over the years and is highly recommended). In their humble kitchen, they also conduct Indian cooking classes, which are hugely popular with foreigners. Along with delicious recipes, you'll get to meet a lovely family and gain priceless insight into Indian culture. If you don't have much time in Jodhpur, do book in advance as classes are often full.

Mandore was the capital of the Marwar region before Jodhpur was founded, but now it's in a neglected state. There's an old fort, an eclectic collection of temples and cenotaphs, and a small museum in the Mandore Gardens. The gardens are beautiful, albeit unkempt in places, and used as a local picnic spot. They're worth visiting for the fantastic architecture and history of a bygone era. The best time to go is during the week when it's quietest. If you love monkeys, you'll find plenty there! For sweets, visit Janta Sweet Home , Narayan Mishtan Bhandar (which makes mogar kachori with a lentil stuffing), or Moolji Sweets . The latter also makes all manner of must-try sweets like ghevar (disc-shaped sweet fried in ghee and drizzled with sugar syrup) and makhaniya lassi (sweetened, saffron-laced yogurt drink topped with a dollop of butter).

Mehran Terrace

Open for dinner, Mehran Terrace is laid out on the illuminated ramparts of Mehrangarh Fort, with the option of al fresco and indoor seating. Enjoy Rajasthani delicacies like dal-baati-churma (spicy lentil curry served with wheat balls and semi-sweet powder), laal maas (fiery goat meat curry), and more; reservations required.

One of the last great palaces built in India, Umaid Bhawan Palace is the hotel of choice for the luxury traveler. Part home of the erstwhile royal family of Jodhpur, part museum, and part hotel operated by the Taj Group, the palace features 70 rooms and suites done in luxurious Art Deco style with original artifacts and modern amenities. An indoor subterranean pool, unique marbled squash courts, and the holistic Jiva Spa are all at your disposal.

RAAS Jodhpur

Built around the 18 th -century haveli (mansion) of a Marwari nobleman, RAAS Jodhpur boldly juxtaposes the old with newly built structures that use local red sandstone and traditional architectural elements. Most of the 40 rooms and suites look out over Mehrangarh Fort and are done in tasteful contemporary style with black and white terrazzo. Don’t miss a sundowner on the rooftop bar followed by dinner at the al fresco restaurant Darikhana, with the illuminated fort looming above. 

The Rohet House

Tucked away in a residential neighborhood of Jodhpur, The Rohet House is a gorgeous pastel-hued boutique hotel. There are no international flights direct to Jodhpur; fly to New Delhi and take a connecting domestic flight or fly to Jaipur and rent a car (220 miles). The best time to visit is October–March; being a semi-desert city, winter temperature can dip to the low 40s. Bring a few layers, a scarf (for visiting religious places), and closed flat shoes. Jodhpur is easily walkable once you’ve reached the Old City by the clock tower. We found this to be a nice change of pace from many of the other cities in India and we felt ourselves slowing down and enjoying the local way of life.

The Top Things to See & Do in Jodhpur

› the stepwell (toorji ka jhalra bavdi).

Built in the 1740’s, this step well was one of the main sources of water during ancient times.  Like all of the step wells you will see throughout India, the Toorji Ka Jhalra bavdi has multi-level steps allowing you to reach the water at any level.

Unlike the famous step well in Jaipur where the guards will either not let you in or charge you a “fee”, this place is completely free.

› Mehrangarh Fort

As one of the largest forts in India, the Mehrangarh Fort was once a palace and now a museum. It was the most well preserved fort that we visited during our stay in India and the museum was very informative. When you purchase your ticket the cost includes a free audio guide.

› Get Lost Wandering the Blue Streets

Spend the day wandering aimlessly through the azure colored streets and admire all the stunning architecture which dates back to more than 150 years. You can get easily walk from the main clock tower, through the alleys and all the way around to the back side of the Fort.

› Climb Rooftops for the Best Views

There will no doubt be plenty of rooftops where you can capture those stunning shots of the Mehrangarh Fort and the iconic blue houses of Jodhpur. A lot of these views can be found by heading up to one of the many rooftop cafes. And don’t feel like you have to order a full meal. You can easily just get something to drink and enjoy the view.

› Jaswant Thada

Located a short distance from the Mehrangarh Fort, Jaswant Thada is a cenotaph built in 1899. This white marble mausoleum serves as the cremation grounds for the royal family of Marwar. The main structure stands in the middle of a beautiful garden surrounded by stunning views of Jodhpur.

› Pachetia Hill Viewpoint

The absolute best place to get those epic sunset shots is at the Pachetia Hill Viewpoint. To get there, hire an inexpensive tuk tuk to take you to this exact GPS coordinate: 26.294710, 73.017635.

As Jodhpur  is located in the state of Rajasthan, most visitors will typically start in either Udaipur or Jaipur before continuing onwards to Jodhpur. There are multiple ways to reach Jodhpur from anywhere in Rajasthan, all ranging in costs.

The easiest, most stress free way is to hire a personal driver . There are many companies which will provide these services and typically you will pay a fee per kilometer.

We did the a/c bus option and it cost 420 INR per person (~6 USD) with the journey lasting about 4.5 hours. Our bus started in Ajmer since we were in Pushkar prior to going to Jodhpur. If you also want to visit Pushkar then you will need to take a taxi or UBER from Pushkar to Ajmer first.

There are no direct options from Pushkar for either the bus or the train. The taxi from Pushkar to Ajmer cost 500 INR (~7.25 USD) and we set it up through our hostel.

There is also the option of  Taktal. This is where they reserve a certain number of seats that you can purchase the same day. These tickets will be more expensive but at least you’ll be able to get a seat.

You could also check flights to Jodhpur as India has some very low cost airlines. We used IndiGo Air a few times while in India. The flights were inexpensive and also include a checked bag!

Getting Around Jodhpur

By far the easiest way to get around Jodhpur and all of India is to use UBER. You can also download and use OLA, which is India’s local version of UBER. We made some new friends in Udaipur and saw how the OLA app works.

It is similar to UBER but slower and requires more information. Honestly, either is probably a good enough option and they are around the same price.

One of the things we loved the most about using UBER (or OLA) is that there is no haggling and you don’t have to give the driver directions. The app sets a rate, which is significantly cheaper than a tuk tuk, and the driver has google maps connected to the app. All you have to do is sit back and relax in the a/c!

› Where to Eat

During our time in Jodhpur we mostly ate at our Luxury Homestay: The Almond Tree. Their food was incredibly tasty, we knew it was fresh and the prices were the same as in the city.

› Where to Stay

We stayed in Jodhpur a total of 5 nights with 4 of those being at The Almond Tree: A Luxury Guesthouse. We loved every second of our stay here and would highly recommend to anyone traveling to Jodhpur. Located in a quiet neighborhood just on the outskirts of the Old City, this homestay was the perfect retreat.

They have spacious, comfortable and uniquely designed luxury rooms with all the amenities you could need. There is also a rooftop terrace with outdoor seating, a relaxing jacuzzi and a pergola that is perfect for early morning yoga!

Our last night in Jodhpur we stayed at the Park Plaza Hotel Jodhpur. This is a larger hotel with great amenities such as a swimming pool, gym, restaurant and on-site pool. The rooms are comfortable and bright and the staff is warm and welcoming.

An eVisa to India is required for almost all international travelers. You can apply online for the eVisa prior to your arrival in India and it is a relatively easy process. I did my application through ivisa.com  which is slightly more expensive (by about $30) due to processing fees but is completely stress free and worth it.

Things to do in Jodhpur: A Guide to Exploring India’s Blue City

When we were first planning our India travel itinerary , Jodhpur was one of the places that I insisted on adding to the list. There are only a handful of blue cities around the world and I wanted to see this one! We gave ourselves a total of 3 days in Jodhpur, which I felt was plenty of time to see the sights, visit the markets and also sample some of the best meals we had in all of India , so today I’m sharing this mini travel guide showcasing some of my favourite things to do in Jodhpur.

Things to do in Jodhpur

Go in search of blue

First up, it wouldn’t be a proper visit to Jodhpur without ditching the map and purposely getting lost in the Blue City. With most of Jodhpur’s buildings and laneways painted blue, wandering around taking photos is an activity in and of itself.

Why Jodhpur is painted blue is still a bit unclear. There are a number of probable reasons like: 1) many Brahmins lived here and blue is the colour of Lord Shiva, 2) the colour blue helps keep homes cool during the summer months, 3) there is evidence of indigo plantations nearby and that would’ve made the colour blue readily available, 4) it would have given the rulers beautiful views from the fort, and 5) it would have attracted travelling traders passing through Rajasthan.

Whatever the reason, it’s a remarkable city you won’t soon forget.

Enjoy a Rajasthani thali

There is one meal that stands out from every other meal I ate in India , and that is the Rajasthani thali set that I had in Jodhpur.

For those of you who’ve never had a thali set before, it’s basically a meal served on a platter with an array of little dishes. Depending on the region where you’re having your thali, the platter will typically have plain rice or some kind of bread in the middle (this could be roti, chapati, puri or naan), and then you’ll have a selection of curries, pickled vegetables, curd, and other items.

The idea behind the thali is that you get 6 different flavours in one plate: sweet, salty, bitter, sour, astringent and spicy. It’s basically a party for your taste buds, which makes it very fun to eat!

We ate at  Jhankar , which is a Jain restaurant that serves up dishes that are strictly vegetarian and egg free.

The restaurant is set in a 500-year-old haveli that oozes history. We ate in their courtyard, which feels like a little oasis. I sank into the wicker chairs and was happy to sip on a lime soda while surrounded by palms and beautiful architecture.

The portions were massive, the food came fast, and every last bite was delicious . The majority of the little dishes in my thali were completely new to me, so it was nice to experiment and get a taste of Rajasthani and Jain cuisine .

If you still have room for dessert after all that food, you can try  gulab jamuns , which are fried semolina balls soaked in rose syrup. Those will give you a sugar high!

Tour Mehrangarh Fort

Mehrangarh Fort rises 125 meters over Jodhpur making it the city’s main landmark. The walk itself is a little steep, but you’ll be stopping to take pictures and stare at the grand doorways and balconies so often that you’ll hardly notice the incline.

For something a bit adventurous , you can actually go zip-lining inside the fort! The Flying Fox  consists of 6 separate zip lines which fly around the fort, and give you a bird’s eye view of the gardens and the desert lakes. I can’t say I did it myself, but it is one of the most popular activities in Jodhpur.

What I did make time for was food. I ate at  Café Mehran , which is located inside the fort and serves up some of the best samosas I had in India . It’s a nice breezy cafe and the walls are covered in portraits of the Maharajas. Another popular restaurant located within the fort is  Chokelao Mahal Terrace  which only opens in the evenings and offers fine dining with views of Mehrangarh Fort all lit up at night.

If you’re looking for something else to do after you finish touring the fort, you can visit  Rao Jodha Desert Rock Park . This park sits at the foot of the fort, where you can hike the trails and see some of the local vegetation.

Once you’re inside Mehrangarh Fort you need to swing by  Mehrangarh Museum . While admission to the fort is free, there is a fee to enter the museum (₹ 600 for foreigners), but it’s so worth it because we’re talking about the palace where the Rathores (the rulers of Jodhpur) once lived.

The museum is divided into galleries showcasing various artefacts like elephant howdahs (seats that would have been used to ride elephants ), palanquins (covered day beds used to transport the nobility), as well as paintings, turbans, textiles, armour and wood crafts.

It’s a fascinating place, but it also gets packed, so the earlier you get there, the better.

Watch the sunset over the fort

In my opinion, Jodhpur has one of the best sunsets in all of India, which means you’re going to want to find a rooftop to watch the magic happen .

We went over to Castle View , which is a haveli that also happens to have a rooftop restaurant. Reaching Castle View involves navigating a maze of blue laneways and climbing a series of staircases, but once you reach the top, you have Mehrangarh Fort directly in front of you. It was a great little spot to watch the sunset with a drink in hand while the whole city was set aglow.

For something a little more upscale, Indique is a very popular choice for sunset drinks or al fresco dining. This restaurant is located in the Pal Haveli Hotel, which is a luxury property just north of the Clock Tower. This restaurant is a bit further away from the fort, so you don’t get those close up views, but it’s a nice little splurge. The setting is beautiful, the service is impeccable, and they serve a tasty saffron lassi. Just remember to make reservations because it fills up.

Stay in a traditional haveli

For our stay in Jodhpur, we booked ourselves into a traditional haveli.

I’ve already talked quite a bit about havelis in my guide to Jaisalmer , but basically, these are old family mansions that date back several centuries and have been transformed into a mix of luxury hotels and budget guesthouses .

I purposely tried to find havelis while we were travelling in Rajasthan, because it’s such a unique form of accommodation and you can feel the history from the minute you set foot through the door. While each haveli varies in terms of layout and design, you can generally expect dark wooden furniture, hand-painted scenes from Indian epics on the walls, a daybed with silk pillows, shared courtyards and rooftop terraces, and tiny doors that you’ll most likely have to duck your head under.

I stayed at the Jewel Palace Haveli , which had all of the above but catered to a more budget-friendly crowd. It was a property full of character, but my main complaint about this place is that the staff were quite young and easily distracted (we had to remind them multiple times that we needed things like towels, toilet paper and bed sheets); that being said, they are one of the top-rated havelis in the city. And that was it for Jodhpur! Our visit was short and sweet, but I’m glad we made time to stop here while we were traveling in Rajasthan . It was interesting coming here right after Jaisalmer, because even though both are fort cities, they each have their own distinct qualities. Jaisalmer was definitely the calmer of the two, but Jodhpur had its own gems hiding amidst the chaos.

I was in Jodhpur with my friends this January and it was undoubtedly the best trip of my entire lifetime. The grandeur, charm and colors of the city have made a permanent mark on my heart. Every aspect of this trip was as amazing as it could get. The lip smacking food, the bright clothes, shopping centers, Chokhi Dhani, camel rides, every single thing. One other unique experience was out bike ride around the blue city. We took a bike on rent in Jodhpur from this bike rental company called www[dot]wheelstreet[dot]com and roamed the city till night. This blog will make you want to pack your bags to Jodhpur, right away.

You reminded me of my Jodhpur trip. It was so much fun! I loved the sunset over the blue city, the Mehrangarh Fort and my lunch at Ajit Bhavan – a heritage property.

I had thought Chefchaouen in Morocco was the only blue city before reading this post, now I want to visit Jodhpur too! Thanks for the recommendation of staying in a haveli, I think that would be a great experience and it’s nice to know that there are some options out there for budget travelers too who want to stay in them too.

Jodhpur is an amazing place to roam around. This post just reminded me of that. Along with that it reminded me that the whole time I spent there, it felt like I was surrounded with the color blue. After reading this post I feel like going back there again. but last time when I went there I was facing some transportaion issues. It was a hassle. But recently my friends has been there and they have rented bikes to roam around from Wheelstreet bike rentals. Jodhpur is definitely an important tourist place but there are not many things to do and see like Jaipur and Udaipur. This is a reason travelers spent 2-4 days in these cities. Jaswant Tada is a royal cenotaph built in white marble. It has a small pond and a pretty garden next to it. This structure is just a few minutes downhill walk from the main fort, so there is no need to take a ride. A popular travel destination in Rajasthan, Jodhpur is a sunny city set against the bright blue sky and is called the ‘Blue city since a number of houses and walls of the city are painted blue in color. The city of Jodhpur was founded in the year 1459 by Rao Jodha, the chief of the Rathore clan at the time.

After being driven out by the Afghans from their homeland in Kannauj, The Rathore clan fled to Pali, where they established marital ties with the local kingdom which increased their strength. Following which they drove out the Pratiharas from Mandore and established the town as their capital. Later as the need for a more secure capital arose, the Rathores decided to settle in the beautiful city of Jodhpur.

Forts and Palaces - The Royals of Rajasthan

Perched on top of a hill at a height of 410 feet above the city of Jodhpur is the most beautiful structure of the city, the Mehrangarh Fort. Built in the year 1459 by Rao Jodha of the Rathore clan, the fort is an architectural marvel and is steeped in history.

The fort has 7 huge gates which were built by different rulers at different points of time and were made as a reminder of their victory in battles. The fort houses a number of magnificent palaces namely,the Phool Mahal, Moti Mahal, Sheesh Mahal, Jhanki Mahal, Takhat Vilas and Zenana Mahal, and now functions as a museum.

The Phool Mahal is the most elaborate palace in the fort. As the name suggests, Phool Mahal was designed to look like the most beautiful flower, and it does. The palace was made by Maharaja Abhaya SIngh and was intended to be a pleasure chamber for the King

The interior of the palace is laden with gold, uses a colorful palette, and is adorned with paintings and intricate carvings on its walls and ceilings. The built and design of the palace are a fine testament to the extravagant taste of the royals.

Moti Mahal translates to 'Palace of pearls' is considered to be the biggest palace at Mehrangarh and was made by Raja Sur Singh as a darbar or the court where he would listen to the concerns of his subjects.

The palace earns the name due to its surface being covered with a mixture of finely crushed seashells and lime plaster which gives it a shiny look. The intricacies of its interior with the beautiful mirror work, religious paintings and stained glass windows make the palace a sight to behold

The Sheesh Mahal or the Palace of Mirrors is another exquisite palace in Mehrangarh Fort. The palace is known for the marvelous interior with its walls and ceilings covered in mirrors of different sizes and the walls adorning painted panels of various Hindu Gods and Goddesses. Sheesh Mahal was built by Maharaja Ajit Singh and was one of his private chambers.

Built by Maharaja Takhat Singh, the Takhat Vilas served as his residence during his reign and displays a blend of Rajput and British architecture. The walls and ceiling of the palace are decorated with paintings which showcase stories from Hindu mythology.

The Jhanki Mahal was built for the women of the royal family to observe the royal ceremonies since they were barred from coming into public view, and so they observed the ceremonies through the windows of the palace.

This palace at Mehrangarh Fort called the Zenana Mahal was built for the royal women and was kept separated from the men's quarters. The royal women lived at the palace and spent a lot of their time here. The noticeable architecture of the palace includes structures made of sandstones and intricate carvings.

Another marvel at Jodhpur by the Rathore dynasty is the Umaid Bhawan Palace. Built by Maharaja Umaid Singh, it is another place for tourists to explore. The Palace is divided into three parts, a luxury stay hotel, museum and the private residence of the royal family of Jodhpur.

Temples of Jodhpur- Carved for the Gods

The Chamunda Mata Temple was built by Rao Jodha of the Rathore dynasty, and is situated at the Mehrangarh Fort.

The Rathore King brought the deity of Goddess Chamunda from the previous capital of Mandore to Jodhpur and established it at the temple. The story of the temple revolves around the making of the Mehrangarh Fort.

Apparently before the King decided to build his capital at this hilltop, it used to be a residing place of a certain Sage, who did not wish to move even after multiple requests by the King. As a result, he was forced to leave the hilltop by the King's troop. He left, but cursed the kingdom will forever face water scarcity and drought. To avert this curse, the Chamunda Mata Temple was set up.

Another marvelous temple at Jodhpur is the Mahamandir Temple. The beautiful temple is a Shaivite temple and is supported by 84 intricately carved pillars. The temple is a popular site for tourists when they visit Jodhpur due to its exquisite architecture and is a place you must visit on your trip to the city.

At the Osian village, near the city of Jodhpur are the beautiful temples of Osian. The village houses a number of Jain and Hindu temples, and is therefore also called the 'Khajuraho of Rajasthan' due to the presence of the many temples. The temples which are known primarily include the Surya Temple, Harihara Temple, Sachiya Mata Temple and Mahavira Jain Temple.

A fascinating temple near Jodhpur that is truly one of a kind is the Om Banna Temple or the Bullet Baba Temple. The Temple is located on the NH 62 on the Pali-Jodhpur Highway and is dedicated to a young man called Om Singh Rathore who passed away at the site due to a bike accident.

The bullet bike of Om Banna is at the temple and is kept in a glass case, which is worshiped by the people along with the tree which the bike crashed into. Jodhpur itinerary – how to spend 1 or 2 days in the blue city.

Get ready to skip past persistent cows in narrow blue-painted alleyways, press your way through colorful saris, and walk in the king’s footsteps in the magnificent Mehrangarh Fort overlooking the Blue City. We are in Jodhpur, the second largest city in colorful Rajasthan, “the land of kings”.

While I will recommend a minimum of a 2 days Jodhpur itinerary to get the most out of your visit, I will also give a suggestion for places to visit in Jodhpur in 1 day. This way you have an option in case you don’t have the opportunity to stay longer than a day.

Rajasthan is said to be the most colorful state in India and tremendously popular among travelers. In fact, it was the first part of India I ever visited. And I loved it!

What to expect from Rajasthan? Buzzing North Indian street life, pushy sellers, incredible fortresses, endless desert land, working camels, colorful saris, and Indian travelers shoving you into their family photos as if you are a life-long friend. There is so much beauty in Rajasthan !

What to expect from Jodhpur? All the above plus a lot of blue. Lots and lots of blue buildings.

Also, expect getting lost, eating way too spicy food, scamming attempts, and sore feet from all the walking. Hold on to your valuables, put on your best smile, and keep your finger on the trigger of your camera at all times and you will have an unforgettable time!

India is a country of diversity. So, for all the bad and evil you might meet, you meet just as much kindness. Or even more. Generally, a lot more.

In my experience, India is a place to take precautions, keep your eyes open, respect the local norms, and speak to the locals for advice. And Jodhpur is no exception.

You will have to choose who you trust, so make yourself a favor and talk to people openly and fearlessly while you listen to your gut. If your gut says “mieeh?”, then talk to someone else that your gut shuts up around.

Also, as in any other crowded city, keep your valuables close and make sure you don’t leave your bag unattended.

Always agree on any price for transport upfront.

Note: If a bicycle taxi or Rickshaw gives you an incredibly cheap price, it means they will stop by a shop on the way. They get a commission from the shop if you go in and look. That means the cheap price is for a shopping trip and spending way more time to get to your destination. If you are ok with that, fine, but if you want to get to your destination directly, you will have to talk about a different price.

Best time to go to Jodhpur

October to March are the coolest months and normally around 20+ degrees Celsius in the day time. It is the absolute best time of year to go sightseeing and on any desert safari.

May to June are the hottest months and temperatures can rise above 40 degrees Celsius in the day time. If you decide to travel in this period, remember to drink a lot of water and use sunscreen all day.

July to September sees lower temperatures and higher humidity. This is the low season in Jodhpur and while you can avoid the crowds, you can also save a lot of money on accommodation .

Where to stay in Jodhpur

Around the clock tower.

The best place to stay in Jodhpur for a night or two is definitely around the Clock Tower. The Clock Tower is a main landmark constructed a century ago in traditional architecture. Surrounded by the Sardar Market twisting through narrow streets with strongly smelling spices, colorful textiles, loud vendors, running children, and the odd cow chewing something from the ground that wasn’t grass.

The animated square is only a 20 minutes’ walk from the main attraction in Jodhpur, the Mehrangarh Fort. It is also central to other attractions and close to the airport.

Paota is a good option to the central Clock Tower, and only a 10 minutes’ drive away. You find both a central train station and bus station in Patoa so you get easily around from there.

If you want to make a difference

Durag Niwas Guesthouse is a welcoming guest house that has also funded a charity organization, Sambhali Trust. They empower women and children in underprivileged communities and have a shop at the premises too where you can buy handmade clothes and little cotton animals. Everything is handmade by the women in the supported communities.

The guest house is situated close to the Gaushala Stadium, 4 km from the Mehrangarh Fort and 4,2 km from Umaid Bhawan Palace. It is central enough that you can walk around if you don’t want to get a Rickshaw everywhere.

Now, let’s look at a Jodhpur itinerary for 1 day and for 2 days. If you only have one day, feel free to pick from either day beneath. Anyway, I have tried to put what I think is the most important tourist attractions in the first day to make sure you get the most out of your 1 day in Jodhpur.

Places to visit in Jodhpur in 1 day

Mehrangarh fort.

09:00-12:00

Opening hours 09:00-17:00

Entrance Fees:

• Indian visitors: 100 Rs.
• Foreign visitors: 600 Rs.

I recommend that you have your breakfast before 9:00 so that you get to the fortress for when it opens. You should spend a maximum of 3 hours in the fort so that you get the most out of your day in Jodhpur.

With only one day in Jodhpur, you should definitely start off with visiting the majestic Mehrangarh Fort. Sitting on a 120 meters high cliff and spreading across 5 kilometers in the heart of the Blue City it cannot be missed.

Dating back to 1438, the fort is protected by its 35 meters tall and 20 meters thick walls. Canons are situated on the wall, though today they are mainly there for tourists to photograph in front of the implausible view of the blue-painted city.

There are several palaces and temples situated inside the fortress, as well as a museum with artifacts from Rajasthan kings and the Mughal dynasty.

If you have time for the Jodhpur itinerary over 2 days, you can take a ride on the zip-line from the north side of the fort. Find the ticket office for Flying Fox to get your tickets. It is a circuit that takes about 90 minutes with 6 different zip-lines and really worth the ride.

Make time for lunch after visiting the fort. There are several restaurants in and around the fort.

Take a rickshaw to the Umaid Bhawan Palace, it only takes about 15 minutes from the fort, depending on traffic.

Umaid Bhawan Palace

  Umaid Bhawan Palace was fully constructed back in 1943 after 14 years of building. The massive structure became one of the largest residents in the world. Today, it is the main home of the former Royal Family of Jodhpur with a total of 347 rooms.

One part of the palace is managed by Taj Hotels while another part is a museum for visitors that shows the history of the Jodhpur Royal Family. You can also see an incredible collection of classic cars outside the palace.

Get a rickshaw back to the Clock Tower by Sardar Market. This is only a 10 minutes’ drive by rickshaw depending on the traffic.

Clock Tower and Sardar Market

The rest of the day you should walk around the Sardar Market. It is probably one of the best things to do in Jodhpur, just to experience the everyday life at the market. Also, walking through the narrow streets is a great way to explore the fusion of smells and colors this city has to offer. Don’t get surprised if your path gets blocked by a massive cow. They have first priority always!

When you get hungry, you can find a few restaurants nearby for dinner.

Jodhpur Itinerary – day 2

If you did the zip-line day one and didn’t get the time to do everything, feel free to change any attraction of day 2 so you get to experience what you want to.

Rao Jodha Desert Rock Park

08:00-10:30

Get your breakfast before 08:00 so you can get to the park at 8:00. This way you will get the most out of the day.

Next to Mehrangarh Fort, the large, rocky wasteland of Rao Jodha Desert Rock Park spreads across 70 hectares. The rocky wasteland was newly cleared of intrusive plants that were brought from Central America nearly a century ago. Now, the native desert plants get a chance to grow back. The park was founded in 2006 to protect the area and is now a beautiful place to walk around.

To get from the Rao Jodha Desert Rock Park to Jaswant Thada you can take the 15 minutes’ walk down Rajputana Rd. and turn left into Jaswant Thada Rd. Or you can take a Rickshaw that will be there in 3-5 minutes.

Jaswant Thada

• Foreign visitors: 30 Rs.

Also known as the Taj Mahal of Mewar, Jaswant Thada is a must-see marble structure surrounded by lush green trees by the lakeside. Inside the carefully carved white building, there are beautifully decorated memorials with dedicated artwork and paintings of the former Mewar rulers.

The memorial house was built by Maharaja Sadar Singh in 1899 and named after his father, Maharaja Jaswant Singh II. The royal cremation ground sits just next to the building.

While at the Jaswant Thada you can also appreciate the nearby lake.

After visiting Jaswant Thada it is time for lunch. If you want, you can take a Rickshaw directly to Mandore Garden and find a restaurant around there. It takes about 20 minutes.

However, you also have the time to take a rickshaw towards Gulab Sagar Talab Lake where you find quite a few restaurants nearby.

I definitely recommend trying a thali while in Jodhpur, which is normally the cheapest way of eating. It consists of one big plate with several small dishes and sauces. Often, they come and top up while you eat. This way you can try traditional Indian food the local way.

Mandore Garden

15:30-17:30

Opening hours 08:00-20:00

Entrance Fee: 100 Rs.

Mandore Garden is located 9 kilometers outside the city, though one of the most beautiful places to visit. It should definitely be on your Jodhpur itinerary if you have two days to spare.

Mandore used to be the ancient capital of the Pratiharas who ruled the region back in the 6 th Century AD before Mehrangarth Fort.

The green gardens are spotted with ancient ruins and cenotaphs and calm lakes.

In the evening you can explore Mandore and get your dinner there, or you can take a Rickshaw back to the clock Tower for a stroll and dinner in the nearby areas.

Responsible tourism in Jodhpur

Jodhpur is, without doubt, full of impressions and new experiences. However, there are a few things you should keep in mind as a responsible tourist to the Blue City.

Photographing people

Before you take photos of people, no matter how colorful and traditional looking, remember that they are people, just like you and me. Ask them if it is ok for them that you take their photograph. Especially children, you should always get consent from an adult family member.

I can’t stress this enough! Never give money to people performing with animals . Never take photos with animals. Also, don’t ride animals . The animals deserve being free, and as long as tourists pay people for anything related to animals, they will keep being maltreated, malnourished, and used for our amusement.

In Jodhpur, you might see cobras in baskets, you might be offered a camel ride or a selfie with a monkey. There is also a zoo in the city. Instead of spending money on these activities, look up a way to see these animals in the wild in an ethical way.

Waste management

Waste management in India is probably non-existent. Anyway, I recommend that you throw your rubbish in a bin instead of the street. At least you have done your part.

• Situated in the middle of the city, the Mehrangarh Fort is a living testimony of the military might of the Rajputs. With the strategically located cannons on the walls, the fort is spread over an area of 5 km at an altitude of about 125 meters. Thousands of tourists visit this fort every year to have a glimpse of the artillery system of the Rajput warriors. A bird's eye view of the city from above the fort is fascinating.
• Umaid Bhawan, the only 20th-century-built palace, was constructed to give employment to the famine-struck population of Jodhpur. Made of sandstone, it took 16 years to complete. This majestic building is presently the residence of the former rulers with a part of it running as hotel and remaining part as a museum.
• Another example of Rajput glory is the Jaswant Thade, which is a shrine built in memory of Maharaja Jaswant II in 1899. A story goes that Maharaja Jaswant succumbed to injuries in this place while fighting the Mughal king Jahangir.
• Mandar Garden was the ashram of Rishi Mandu. This garden has a gate known as the Ajit pole. It is decorated with paintings of the gods and goddesses of Indian mythology.
• Giridkot and Sardar Market, located in the heart of the city, are popular for a wide range of handicrafts.
• About 4 miles away from the Jodhpur lay the Balsamand Lake and Garden. It is an artificial lake built in AD 1159. It is an ideal place for picnics and excursions.
• The Mahamandir Temple (9 km) is another site to visit. The architecture and the cutwork on the stone are amazing. Built in 1812, it has 84 carved pillars.
• Kailana Lake, 11 km from Jodhpur, is an idyllic picnic spot.
• Situated on the Jodhpur-Bikaner highway diversion, Osian (58 km) is an oasis in the desert area of Rajasthan. The Osian sunset point is famous for its panoramic view of the setting sun over the golden sands.
• There is also a wildlife sanctuary at Dhawa (45 km). It has the largest number of cheetal and sambhar.
• The Nagaur Fort is situated 135 km from Jodhpur. The Badal Mahal, Sheesh Mahal, and Hadi Rani Mahal are beautiful specimens of Rajput architecture.
• Luni Fort and its environs (20 km) are also worth visiting. The fort has now been converted into a heritage hotel
