15 Best Edinburgh Tours

Edinburgh is the capital of Scotland and has been for nearly seven centuries.

Not surprisingly, in many ways, it’s considered the heart of the country and is the premier center for education, arts, literature, and engineering.

If you’re looking to relax on a white-sand beach and sip an umbrella drink, it’s probably not a wise destination choice, but for lovers of history and culture, it’s well worth a visit.

The city attracts more than a million visitors annually from around the world; with so much to see and do, you won’t have trouble filling your itinerary.

Below are 15 of the best tours of Edinburgh.

1. Walking Tour of Historic Old Town

Old Town Historical Walking Tour

Your guide will lead you to places where buses and taxis can’t go and you’ll get a professional narration about the historical significance of the things you’re seeing.

The tour lasts about 90 minutes and will give first-time visitors a great overview of the city.

Unfortunately, it isn’t open to children younger than five. Remember to dress appropriately, as Scotland is noted for its cool, windy, and often rainy weather.

2. Ghostly Underground Vaults Tour

Ghostly Underground Vaults Tour

The city’s vaults are one of its most popular attractions. This quick 75-minute tour will get you and your companions up close and personal with these macabre relics.

The tours are given during the day because otherwise, it’d be entirely too spooky.

The vault’s history is an amazing slice of Edinburgh; though they started out as storage areas, they became residences in the 17th century for the poorest of the city’s inhabitants.

Why choose Historic Edinburgh Tours?

Consistently excellent

Robert is our Edinburgh tour guide and is our only tour guide. Each of our awards has been won with him at the helm. You're guaranteed consistency of excellence. We would only use an additional tour guide if a private booking were large enough to warrant this. We would discuss this with you before your tour

Award-winning Edinburgh tours

Historic Edinburgh Tours have been awarded Tripadvisor Certificates of Excellence in 2017 and 2018. We won a Tripadvisor Traveller's Choice award in 2020. In 2020, we were nominated for the 'Best Entertainment' category of the Edinburgh Business Awards.

A teacher and a guide

Robert is a teacher in a local primary school and has taught for over twenty years. He's not sure he can believe that he's old enough for that! He studied primary school education in the historic Moray House building which sits in Edinburgh's Canongate, a street which forms part of the Royal Mile.

Explore Edinburgh With Our Local Guide

Your guide has lived in Edinburgh all his life. Born within view of the Old Town, he will give you an authentic Scottish perspective on his nation’s past. He has spent his entire life in the historic city of Edinburgh. He even has direct links to one of the stories he tells in Greyfriars Kirkyard!

We Do 'Our Bit' For The Local Community

Although we're a small company, we do want to 'do our bit'. We've frequently run special charity tours. All of the monies taken on these tours have been donated to the local Streetwork charity. This fantastic charity helps local homeless and disadvantaged people. We also frequently share posts from Streetwork on our social media pages.

A local Edinburgh tour company

Robert has written and resourced each one of our tours. His particular favourite is the Slum life in Victorian Edinburgh tour because it reveals a very different part of Edinburgh's history. He does have a great fondness for Greyfriars Kirkyard as his work on the virtual tour was what allowed him to lead our first-ever tours. Robert has also provided resources for TV programmes, books and has advised on educational schemes of work. He has appeared on Dutch TV and also gave a talk on local history at the Museum of Edinburgh in 2015.

Tour was amazing and soldier jock didn't let them down. Lovely guy and done an amazing job. Had to deal with an unusual situation and he done it professionally

A perfect spooky treat for the family just before Halloween!! our tour guide was brilliant! she was very enthusiastic and got all the group joining in. Will definitely do it again!

Our guide was amazing. They went by the name James Barry. When we come back, we are definitely going to take the tour again and would love it if James could be our guide again. Lovely service. Amazing body language while telling stories. Well done.

Fantastically fun and spectacularly spooky evening walk full of historical stories and ghost tales with tour guide Soldier Jock who was very engaging, interesting yet friendly - ish! Would highly recommend

We was lucky enough to have Dr. Knox as our guide. He was fantastic. Made sure he spoke to everyone on the tour individually. Made fun of everyone. His storytelling and humour was just perfect. The tour was fascinating especially the underground bit at the end.

We went on the night tour with Soldier Jock, and what a brilliant time we had! Jock was informative and captivating with his stories, and there was a great blend of humour and horror on the tour. It was so interesting seeing a side of Edinburgh that's a lot darker than you first expect. Definitely recommended - thanks again, Soldier Jock!

Taylor Swift

Taylor Swift wowed the Scottish crowd on her first UK tour date Friday evening, earning five-star reviews across the board for her three-and-a-half-hour performance in Edinburgh.

But the star had to break off during a song towards the end of the night, first to draw attention to a fan in the crowd who needed medical help, and then to recover from a temporary injury herself.

Taylor Swift Defends Lady Gaga Amid Pregnancy Speculation: "It's Invasive & Irresponsible To Comment On A Woman's Body"

“Oh God! Hand cramp!”

“I’m so sorry everyone, this has never happened before but my hand is frozen, I’m just going to warm it. I’m so embarrassed. My hand’s like a claw!”

After massaging her hand for a few moments, Swift was able to continue, and the temporary blip did nothing to dampen the delight of 73,000 fans packed into the Murrayfield sports stadium in the Scottish capital city for the first date of the UK leg of Swift’s record-breaking Eras tour.

Swift told the crowd: “I had someone pull me aside and say, ‘Hey, we’ve checked this 20 times and we swear… tonight’s concert is the most highly attended stadium show in Scottish history.’”

And she delighted the Scottish fans telling them the country had inspired her lockdown albums Folklore and Evermore , saying:

“There was so much TV, so much white wine, covered in cat hair. That was my reality. So I thought, ‘I’m going to create an imaginary world and escape into it.’

“That was Folklore , and it was probably based online of videos I’ve seen of Scotland.”

Excitement Peaks as Taylor Swift Commences the UK Leg of Her Eras Tour with a Bang in Edinburgh

T aylor Swift celebrated the launch of her UK Eras tour in an unconventional way—by embracing the local flavor of Greggs, a beloved British bakery chain. Last night in Edinburgh was the first UK stop on her world tour, and instead of lavish party spreads, Swift’s backstage at Murrayfield Stadium was filled with the scent of sausage rolls and steak bakes.

The American pop icon provided her crew with a veritable feast of baked goods courtesy of Greggs, a choice that speaks to her down-to-earth persona.

A confidant of the star disclosed to our team: “Taylor aimed to deliver an electrifying performance and understands the uplifting power of a sausage roll.

“Champagne and caviar might be the befitting order for other superstars, but Taylor is grounded and attuned to her team’s needs.

“Backstage energy was sky-high.”

Taylor’s entrance onstage, adorned in a fittingly sparkling bodysuit and flanked by vibrant flags, set the tone for a night of celebration that would not soon be forgotten. She opened with fan favorites “Miss Americana” and “Cruel Summer,” clearly energized by her pre-show treats.

Swift’s connection with her fans was palpable as she addressed the 73,000-strong crowd at the sold-out venue. “Look what you’ve done — you’ve made me feel so amazing,” she exclaimed.

The audience reciprocated with overwhelming enthusiasm.

Swift admired her Scottish fans, noting the historic attendance and expressing her gratitude.

Going to Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour in Edinburgh? All you need to know about her Murrayfield Stadium dates

Taylor Swift on the Eras Tour

Swifties across the country have been reaching whole new levels of excitement as Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour lands in the UK this week.

After tickets sold out last year for the hotly-anticipated dates , Taylor has been performing across The US and Europe to thousands of adoring fans .

The Blank Space singer, 33, treats Swifties to three hours of hits each night, playing tracks from releases such as Fearless and Red, plus her latest number one album, The Tortured Poets Department .

Ahead of her concerts in Liverpool , Cardiff , London , and Dublin , the Grammy winner is playing three concerts in the Scottish city of Edinburgh – on Friday, June 7, Saturday, June 8 and Sunday, June 9.

With Paramore as her support act, one of the world’s biggest pop stars will perform at the BT Murrayfield Stadium.

With that in mind, let’s take a look at the venue where Taylor is going to be strutting her stuff…

What is the capacity of Murrayfield Stadium Edinburgh?

Murrayfield Stadium in Edinburgh

According to VisitScotland , BT Murrayfield Stadium is the largest stadium in Scotland and can hold 67,144 people.

Murrayfield is usually a sports stadium and is commonly referred to as the home of Scottish Rugby.

On April 21, 1925, Scotland marked a triumph over their ‘Auld Enemy’ rivals, England, in achieving a Grand Slam with the inauguration of the Murrayfield Stadium.

Taylor Swift is not the first famous musician to play at the stadium – One Direction, Bon Jovi, Bruce Springsteen, Robbie Williams, Foo Fighters, Madonna, and The Rolling Stones have all chosen the venue for their Scottish tour shows in the past.

What is the seating plan of Murrayfield Stadium Edinburgh?

Murrayfield comprises two tiers of banked seating and a large standing-only area in front of the stage.

Murrayfield Stadium seating plan

What were the Eras Tour ticket packages for the Edinburgh show?

Depending on what Swifties paid for their tickets and the packages they opted for, they’ll be in different parts of the venue.

  • Seated ticket – £58.65 – £194.75
  • General admission standing – £110.40
  • Front standing – £172.25.

You can find out more with our complete guide to Taylor’s VIP packages for a refresher on what merchandise and extra goodies you should receive if you purchased one.

Does Murrayfield Stadium have a roof and what will the Edinburgh weather be like?

Taylor Swift on the Eras Tour

While we can always rely on Taylor Swift to show up and put on an epic performance, alas, the weather isn’t always on our side .

Consequently, it might be worth taking a waterproof jacket to the Edinburgh dates, just in case!

While the sun is likely to be out at some point and chances of a downpour are slim, there is a small chance of a shower this weekend.

Otherwise, it’s looking to be dry for the gigs at Murrayfield, albeit a bit breezy for fans in the higher sections of the stadium.

So, make sure you either come prepared or do enough dancing to get your blood pumping – not that we need to tell you twice.

What to expect from Taylor’s Edinburgh shows

Taylor Swift on the Eras Tour

Taylor Swift will perform a revamped Eras Tour set in the UK , featuring changes to her setlist after the show’s American run.

The global start initially rejigged her concert ahead of the European leg, which kicked off in Paris at the beginning of May.

She cut several songs from previous eras, such as Long Live from Speak Now and Tolerate It from evermore.

But, to make up for it, Taylor is showcasing her latest record in all its glory, adding tracks such as But Daddy I Love Him, Down Bad, Fortnight, The Smallest Man Who Ever Lived, and I Can Do It With A Broken Heart.

It’s safe to say the staging is nothing less than iconic, with several additional costume changes and dance numbers.

As ever, though, Taylor will be singing ‘surprise songs’ on the UK leg, so don’t fret! More recently, the star has been doing ‘mash-ups’ of several hits on both piano and guitar, so start placing your bets, Scottish Swifites, over what you might get…

About this tour

An edinburgh history tour not to be missed.

Statues are seen, often unnoticed...

On this Edinburgh tour you will explore the stories of people from history, immortalised (in bronze), but murky in people’s memories - a fighter, surgeon, scientist, philosopher, an explorer and a politician.

The story of life behind a statue will help you to make up your mind about how ‘worthy’ they are of its dedication. Do we look up to them and their success stories or do we look up and remember their failings, which can teach us as much as their successes?

History's Missing Statues

If you could dedicate a statue to someone, who would it be? What story would it tell?

Mercat Tours will take you on a journey to explore which historic figures from Edinburgh's past we’d like to place on a plinth, who we currently look up to, and whether they deserve their pedestal.

To start, you’ll visit James Braidwood, a fire-fighter who saved lives, homes and cities. He changed the way we operated fire services.  Along the route, you’ll hear about Elsie Inglis, who made it possible for the vulnerable women to receive medical treatment and about James Barry, who trained as a surgeon in Edinburgh and went on to work in South Africa and performed the first ever caesarean there.

You’ll finish at a statue of one of Scotland's prominent politicians during the 1700s, which was recently the subject of much debate.  Your tour will share stories including LGBTQ+, Black History, and Women's History.

We’ve partnered with the Scottish Storytelling Forum, as part of its Talking Statues project, to deliver an Edinburgh walking tour which explores Edinburgh's different statues. On the tour you'll discover how they got there, the stories behind them, and hear history from a variety of diverse and underrepresented backgrounds.
