Learn more about Laos

Best time to visit laos.

Laos is a great place to visit at any time of the year as the weather doesn't vary much – it’s always hot and humid! The coolest time to visit is from November to January. This is also the driest time, and the main festival period, so it’s an interesting time to travel through Laos. The wet season runs from June to October. It rains frequently during this time, temperatures average over 85 degrees Fahrenheit and although some roads may be closed due to flooding, it is a great time for river travel. February to May is drier but hot, with temperatures climbing over 100 degrees Fahrenheit.

Culture and customs

The population of Laos is made up of more than 100 different ethnic groups, with each having their own distinct clothing, language, customs and way of life. The Lao Loum, who reside in the lowlands along the Mekong, make up the largest ethnic group. Smaller ethnic groups include the Hmong and Mien, both highland dwellers, and the Lao Thoeng, who prefer the lower mountains. Many tribes share cultural similarities with tribes from neighbouring countries, so it’s possible to see Chinese , Vietnamese , Khmer and Thai influences within the dress, food and arts of these people.

Generally, Laotians are known for their laidback lifestyle and calm, steady approach to life. With an emphasis on the simple pleasures of family, food and religion, most people from Laos remain closely connected to their family and village for a lifetime. Most Laotians live in villages, rather than the city, where the sense of community is strong and people are connected to their neighbours and friends. Visiting wats (temples) to make offerings and give alms to monks is a common part of daily life for most, with much respect and reverence reserved for monks.

Buddhist holidays and traditional festivals linked to harvest time and holy periods are commonly celebrated throughout the villages of Laos and are timed according to lunar cycles. With different dates each year, it can be hard to predict the exact timing of these local celebrations, but visiting one can provide great insight into the fascinating culture of Laos.

Eating and drinking

Intrepid believes that one of the best ways of experiencing a country is by eating! Whether you're sampling street food, savoring a cheap eat or indulging in a banquet, there are endless options to choose from wherever you are in the world.

Laotian cuisine draws on culinary traditions from its neighbors, so visitors will be able to taste the flavors of China, Thailand and Vietnam in the food of Laos.

Things to try in Laos

This spicy meat salad is considered the national dish of Lao. The delicious combination of minced beef, chicken or pork seasoned with chili, lime and mint, served with vegetables and sticky rice is a firm favorite with locals and travelers.

2. Khao Poon

This popular soup of meat, rice noodles, lime leaves, chili, garlic and fish sauce has a few variations. The version made with coconut milk makes the dish similar to a laksa, while the version without coconut milk is a lighter option.

3. Fresh fruit

The markets of Laos have a cornucopia of delicious fruits on offer, either fresh or whipped up in a juice. Pineapple, orange, watermelon, guava and banana are plentiful but why not try more exotic fruits like lychee, longan, rambutan or jackfruit?

The answer to Laos’ heat and humidity is a bottle of locally brewed Beerlao, best served cold at the end of a long day of exploring.

Geography and environment

Landlocked Laos is located in South-East Asia, bordered by China, Thailand , Vietnam, Cambodia and Myanmar . The topography of Laos is very mountainous, with much of the land being covered in forest and unsuitable for farming. Due to the mountainous terrain, Laos lacks a developed road network, with most locals living in small villages in the highlands, lowlands and along the Mekong River. Visiting Laos is like going back in time to when highways, traffic jams, mass transit systems and skyscrapers didn't exist. Visitors will be awed by the lush landscapes and stunning scenery, which is unlike anywhere else on earth.

History and government

Early history.

It's thought that Laos has been inhabited by people for thousands of years, although written evidence reveals that societies existed in the 9th century. Early society was based on agriculture and prior to the advent of Buddhism in the 16th century, people largely subscribed to animist beliefs and Shiva-worship, with archaeological evidence of this remaining today.

Like its neighboring countries, Laos was ruled by a series of kingdoms and was subject to invasion from surrounding forces from nearby domains. Europeans first arrived in the area in the 1600s, with the Dutch being the first to arrive. Despite this, the French have had the most European influence in the region. After enduring years of invasion and control from neighboring countries, Laos also had French rule to contend with in the late 1800s, when it became a French colony.

Recent history

Laos was controlled by Japanese forces during World War II, was declared an independent state in 1950 and gained full independence as a constitutional monarchy in 1954. The 1960s proved to be a devastating time for the people of Laos, with their nation gaining the dubious honor of being the most bombed country in the world. The United States bombed Laos extensively in an attempt to eradicate North Vietnamese sanctuaries, and sadly contemporary Laos is still dealing with huge amounts of unexploded ordnance (UXO) that is littered throughout the countryside.

A coalition government was set up in 1962, but in 1975 Laos became a Communist state when the king gave up his throne in favor of a president and prime minister being instated. During the late 1970s, many people of Laos fled to neighboring countries as refugees, as trade embargoes from foreign nations led to widespread poverty and disadvantage. By the 1990s, Laos had become a full member of ASEAN and foreign nations had lifted their trade embargoes, which allowed free enterprise to grow.

Top 10 outdoor experiences in Laos

3. Beautiful biking

Hiring a bike and cycling past quiet villages, small farms and rice paddies is a great way to spend an afternoon in Laos, as you can take in stunning scenery, meet locals and get fit all at once.

4. Have a kick

8. Spiritual stroll

Taking a leisurely walk around Vientiane’s quirky Buddha Park (also known as Xieng Khuan) is akin to taking an active history, religion and art lesson. Full of Hindu and Buddhist sculptures that depict myths, legends and stories – the giant reclining Buddha is a highlight for most. Surrounding trees, gardens and flowers add to the serenity.

9. Cruise along an icon

Taking a riverboat journey down the Mekong is an iconic journey to savor. Sit on deck, catch the breeze and take photos of the surrounding landscapes as villages, people and mountains glide by.

10. Tough trek

Test your fitness against some of Laos’ mountains on a challenging trek. With so much mountainous terrain, there are many different options and places to hike all around Laos – bring your best hiking boots and a sense of adventure.

Apart from being a great place to pick up handmade wares, buy fresh produce and mingle with locals, the many markets of Laos are one of the most interesting places to take photos also.

It's a good idea to check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to bring certain items back into your home country. Australia and New Zealand generally have strict quarantine laws.

Things to buy in Laos

1. Textiles

Laotian weavers are responsible for crafting an impressive range of top-quality fabric wonders. Silk and cotton are the most common and with everything from handmade bags, scarves, cushion covers, placemats and linen on offer, it won’t be hard to go over your luggage limit here.

2. Saa paper

Saa paper (also known as Mulberry paper) is made from the leftover bi-products of the silk industry. You’ll be able to find Saa paper notebooks and stationery, cards and even gorgeous hanging stars in some of Laos’ markets and boutiques.

3. Hmong handicrafts

The Hmong people are famous for creating colorful handicrafts, which can be found in most markets around Laos. Hand-embroidered bedspreads, vibrant clothing and cotton dolls make meaningful global gifts for friends back home.

Festivals and events

Bun pi mai (lao new year).

One day just isn’t enough for Laotians to celebrate New Year - they need a whole three days! The festive period is characterized by water fights, street parties, feasts, laughing and smiles, as the past year’s troubles are washed away to welcome a new year of luck and prosperity.

Vientiane Boat Racing Festival

Entrants from all over Laos travel to Vientiane to compete in this big boat racing festival held at the end of Buddhist Lent. Food stalls and sideshows line the streets to entertain the thousands of people who gather on the river to watch the races.

Laos travel faqs, do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travelers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

Do I need a visa to travel to Laos?

You can get your visa in advance, but a visa can easily be obtained on arrival at most airports from around 35-50 USD (dependant on nationality). Please check with the consulate in your country for more details before you travel. If you are planning to get your visa at the airport we recommend bringing two passport-size photos.

Is tipping customary in Laos?

Tipping isn't mandatory or customary in Laos, but a tip of spare change or another small amount would be appreciated by restaurants, drivers and other service workers, especially if the service has been particularly good.

What is the internet access like in Laos?

Internet access is available easily in tourist areas like Vang Vieng, Luang Prabang and Vientiane, but is far less likely to be found in rural and remote areas.

Can I use my cell phone while in Laos?

You'll be able to use your cell phone in most urban areas of Laos, although rural and remote areas may not have network coverage. Ensure you have global roaming activated with your phone carrier before you leave home if you wish to use your phone while in Laos.

What are the toilets like in Laos?

You'll have to adjust to different standards of hygiene and sanitation whilst in Laos. The standard toilet is of the squat variety and this may take some getting used to, although western-style toilets can be found in large hotels and some tourist areas.

Can I drink the water in Laos?

Drinking tap water isn't recommended in Laos. For environmental reasons, try to avoid buying bottled water. Fill a reusable water bottle or canteen with filtered water. Ask your leader where filtered water can be found; some hotels we stay in may have drinking water available. It's also advisable to avoid ice in drinks and peel fruit and vegetables before eating.

Are credit cards accepted widely in Laos?

Major credit cards are generally accepted by large shops, hotels and restaurants in the city and tourist areas in the cities. However, they may not be accepted by smaller vendors such as small family restaurants, market stalls or in remote towns and rural areas. Make sure you carry enough cash for purchases, since credit cards aren't always an option everywhere in Laos.

What is ATM access like in Laos?

ATMs can be found in the cities of Laos, so withdrawing cash shouldn't be problematic. Smaller villages and rural areas may not have ATM access, so prepare for this before venturing too far from a city or major town.

Does my trip to Laos support The Intrepid Foundation?

Yes, all Intrepid trips support the Intrepid Foundation. In fact, we make a donation on behalf of every traveler. Trips to Laos directly support our foundation partner, MandaLao Elephant Conservation .

MandaLao Elephant Conservation

MandaLao Elephant Conservation was the first non-riding elephant sanctuary in Luang Prabang, and they actively promote ethical elephant care and create jobs in communities in Laos. Donations from our trips help them care for rescued elephants at their sanctuary (including food and veterinary costs) while providing employment opportunities within the local community.

Intrepid will double the impact by dollar-matching all post-trip donations made to The Intrepid Foundation.

Laos Travel & Tours

The vernacular architecture that other countries have swept away in a maelstrom of redevelopment survives in Laos. Simple wooden village homes, colonial-era brick-and-stucco shop houses and gently moldering monasteries mark Laos out as different. Traditional customs are also firmly intact: incense wafts out of street side wats, monks collect alms at daybreak and the clickety-clack of looms weaving richly colored silk can be heard in most villages.

As compelling as these sights and sounds are, the lasting impression for most visitors is of the people and their overwhelming friendliness. Many believe the best thing about Laos is the constant chimes of sabaidee ringing out from schoolchildren, monks and other passersby, extending an invitation to join their meal. This is a land that endured the terrible legacy of being the most bombed country per capita in the world, yet its people transform bomb casings into flower pots and bomb craters into fish ponds. Regardless of their history, people here radiate a sunny, happy disposition. Life is simple in Laos but the people share with their former French colonists an infectious joie de vivre that ensures that good food and great company is the pinnacle of enjoyment. If you’re seeking a relaxed lifestyle and a warm welcome, you’ve come to the right place.

Laos is a beautiful country with a great deal to offer. The capital, Vientiane, has French architecture and a laid-back atmosphere; the former royal capital of Luang Prabang – designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO – is a charming little city stuffed full of striking religious buildings; Wat Phou, an outlier of the former Cambodian kingdom of Angkor, is beguiling too, and the Plain of Jars continues to fascinate visitors with its enigmatic stone urns and devastating war history. The north offers adventure activities and treks among ethnic villages, while the Mekong islands in the far south are a great place to relax, swinging in a hammock and watching dolphins.

Discover one of Southeast Asia’s best-kept travel secrets, with our Laos tours and holidays. With the countries, undeniable qualities being overshadowed by its more established neighbours, Thailand and Vietnam, life in Laos is calm and serene, with the country’s historical isolation presenting travellers with a rare glimpse of traditional life in Southeast Asia.

After its doors opened to foreign visitors in the 1990s, Laos has seen a steady but relatively small influx ...

After its doors opened to foreign visitors in the 1990s, Laos has seen a steady but relatively small influx of tourists arriving, hoping to enjoy one of the region’s few remaining off the beaten track destinations. Those who do make the journey will find Laos a nation of quite staggering natural beauty, sleepy villages dot its verdant countryside while mist-veiled mountains, the mighty Mekong River and pristine forests provide a stunning backdrop to any visit.

For much of its history, Laos was free from foreign control, until being absorbed into French Indochina in the latter part of the 19th century. However, remnants of a long-forgotten past can still be found throughout the country, particularly at the mysterious ‘Plain of Jars’, a vast stretch of land scattered with countless prehistoric stone jars of varying sizes and shapes. The Khmer temple complex of Wat Phu meanwhile is one of the oldest archaeological sites in Laos. Spectacularly located close to the Mekong river, it has monuments to both Laos’ Hindu and Buddhist heritage, and whilst much smaller than Cambodia’s Angkor Wat, it has the advantage of receiving a fraction of the visitors.

Luang Prabang, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and former royal capital, is a major centre of Laotian Buddhist architecture. Its Buddhist monasteries are at the centre of a sacred alms giving ritual that is a privilege to witness - each morning saffron robed monks wander the quiet streets receiving alms from devout locals. Only a short drive from the city lies Kuang Si Falls, a little piece of paradise set amidst lush jungle where locals and travellers can embrace clear turquoise waters to escape the heat of the day.

Those seeking some exercise should head out into the foothills of the Annamite Mountains and support local guides and community projects by trekking in these enchanting surroundings of quite astounding natural beauty. Wild Frontiers also work closely with Lone Buffalo, a non-profit organisation that provides support and education to young people in some of Laos’ least affluent communities. Close to the Cambodian border the sleepy 4,000 islands region is a great place to relax. These tiny islands in the Mekong Delta offer great walking and cycling opportunities as well as fantastic spots to enjoy dazzling sunsets.

An often-overlooked aspect of Laos’ culture is its fantastic cuisine. Using a combination of ingredients and flavours familiar to lovers of Northern Thai food, alongside a distinctive Laotian twist, dishes like Or Lam – a thick meat, bean and aubergine stew – and Larb – a delicious meat salad that is considered Laos’ unofficial national dish. Although reminders of French colonial influences are still very evident, just ask the many purveyors of freshly baked baguettes on the streets of Vientiane or the customers of the Parisian style cafes found in most towns and cities!

Wild Frontiers prides itself on offering a wonderful array of exciting group tours and tailor-made Laos holidays. Helping you to get under the skin of this fascinating destination by meeting local people and getting off the beaten track

Indochina has a climate that ranges from cold and wet in the mountainous of the far north – mainly at night and in the early morning until the mist has been burnt off – to hot and humid in the south. October - February is the cool season so it’s really nothing too drastic. In northern Laos bring a fleece and waterproof jacket for the evenings and In southern Laos the daytime temp will generally be 80-100 degrees so hats and sunscreen all round.

USEFUL INFORMATION

Health and Vaccinations

There are no mandatory immunisations for travellers to Laos though you should be   up to date   with Typhoid, Tetanus, Polio and Hepatitis A. Malaria is present in some parts of Laos. Please note we are not medical professionals and so we highly recommend you seek advice from your local GP or travel centre as to the correct immunisations and preventative treatments.

Currency

In   Laos   the official unit of currency is the Kip.

To check out the latest exchange rate for the places that you are visiting you can go to   www.oanda.com .

Cultural Sensitivity

On our tours you will frequently interact with local people, each with their own distinct customs and traditions. We therefore ask you to be considerate and to treat them with respect. Your tour-leaders and guides will always be able to advise you accordingly.

Overall Laos is very liberal towards travellers and their ways, but we always advise that modest dress should be reflected for both sexes, especially in the more remote areas. The region is predominantly Buddhist and so especially when visiting temples or monasteries you will need to cover your legs and shoulders. Do not wear hats in religious buildings, never touch anyone on the head and do not point your feet towards them (this would be an insult to a monk particularly). Also avoid eating within religious buildings. Generally, when entering a temple sanctuary, house or even guesthouse, you should remove your shoes. This will be apparent by the pile of shoes outside!

At Wild Frontiers we are very aware of the ethical impact tourism can have on ancient cultures. We realise that taking tourists through such a region can have a negative impact on the lives of those who live there and on all our tours we therefore go to great lengths to minimise the negative and accentuate the positive…after all, there are also many good things that the tourist can bring.

To help this process we ask that our clients do not hand out pens or sweets to children. As one sign in Egypt emphatically put it, ‘Please don't make beggars out of our children!' No matter how well intentioned, in our opinion the dolling out of free gifts fosters a ‘beggar mentality' that is ultimately extremely destructive to a society. In addition, we do not condone giving out money to beggars or ‘ students' .

However, we also realise that we are exceptionally privileged to be travelling in areas where most of the people have far less than us and that the desire to ‘help' can be very powerful. As a result, we ask that you refer to the Responsible Travel section of this document which highlights the Wild Frontiers Foundation, which supports specific projects in the areas where we travel.

Language & Religion

The official and dominant language of Laos is Lao. It is a tonal language of the Tai linguistic group   whch   only just over half of the population speaks. The remainder speak various ethnic minority languages, especially in the rural areas. Just under 70% of the population are Theravada Buddhist with the majority being officially unspecified. The proportion of Buddhist could be as high as 98% as religion remains one of the most important social forces in Laos. Christian missionary work is restricted by the government and the Christians are mostly in the Vientiane area, whereas Muslims are located towards the Myanmar border region.

Time

Laos is 7 hours ahead of GMT.

A useful website to check the time zone differences is   www.worldtimezone.com .

Food and drink

Food can be one of the highlights of travelling in Southeast Asia. Rice is the foundation for meals and almost all dishes are cooked with fresh ingredients, such as vegetables, freshwater fish, poultry, duck, pork,   beef   or water buffalo. Lime juice, lemongrass and fresh coriander give the food its characteristic tang, and various fermented fish concoctions are used to salt the food. Hot chillies, garlic, mint, ground peanuts, tamarind juice, ginger and coconut milk are other seasonings.

In terms of alcohol, the local beers are very good and reasonable wine can also be found, although they can be expensive by comparison. Most spirits are also generally available in larger towns, and make sure to try the Lao   Lao   whiskey!

What travelers are saying

"I've travelled with Intrepid in Vietnam, Morocco, Nepal and Egypt and had a brilliant time every time. The experience is better than most tours as you are in a small group that goes a bit more 'off the beaten track', and you don't get taken to endless shopping opportunites (i.e. a cousin's carpet shop). They also have higher ethics than most travel companies, they contribute to local charities and they avoid animal use (donkeys etc) where possible. The tour leaders we have had have all been wonderful, knowledgable and relaxed, with good english."

"The tour had an excellent itinerary and activities, giving a broad overview of Peru - we loved it. Accommodations (with one exception) were great, and all had an included breakfast buffet. The tour's included activities (e.g. cooking class, pisco tour and tasting, potato park, boat tour of Isla Ballestas) were terrific. Appreciated the two included flights which saved a lot of driving time. Logistics were handled, and everything was smooth and easy (thanks to our CEO, Mary Chu!)."

Laos Tour Selection Trips

  • Bus trips through the mountains can be long and uncomfortable. Landslides may also disrupt travel plans, so make sure your plans are flexible.
  • If you visit Vang Vieng to try the infamous “tubing”, you may be disappointed. Visitors can still float down the river in a rubber tube, but the riverside bars have all been shut down following a number of accidents involving tourists. Instead, the stopping points along the river are now spaces to play games and meet others (though rumor has it alcohol continues to be sold here).
  • When choosing a trek in the northern mountains, make sure to choose a route appropriate to your fitness level, as well as ensuring to bring appropriate shoes and clothing.
  • Malaria exists in parts of Laos, so anti-malarials, mosquito nets, and mosquito repellant are recommended.
  • Act respectfully and dress appropriately when visiting buddhist temples. Remove your shoes and use only your right hand to ring bells and make offerings.
  • English is common throughout Laos, particularly in tourist areas. Learning a few words in the Lao language, however, can be a nice way to interact with locals.

Reviews of small group tours to cambodia and laos.

I really enjoyed the trip. The organisation of the trip was perfect. There was just one slight drawback in that the flight from Luang Prabang was delayed for just over 4 hours which meant that it was dark when I arrive in Phnom Penh. This of course was not the fault of TourRadar. The guides in all locations were excellent. For many years I had intended to visit both countries as I had already been in the other Indo China countries. Your tour was therefore ideal from my perspective. A job well done.

(Yicai) June 27 -- Online searches for travel to Laos have shot up after the Southeast Asian country unveiled a visa-free policy for group tours by Chinese people.

The 15-day visa waiver applies to passport holders from the Chinese mainland, as well as Taiwan and the Hong Kong and Macao Special Administrative Regions, the Lao Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism announced yesterday.

Searches for Vientiane, the capital of Laos, surged 91 percent after the announcement compared with the previous week, making it one of the most popular destinations on Qunar’s platform, according to the Chinese online travel agency. Searches for train travel to Vientiane increased threefold, it said.

Bookings for travel to Laos by Chinese mainland tourists have nearly doubled  year on year since the start of 2024, according to Trip.Com, China’s largest online travel agency.

Travel bookings for the summer holidays have soared more than 140 percent compared with the same period of last year, making Laos one of the top 10 outbound tourism destinations by bookings growth on Trip.Com’s platform.

The new policy means that there is now a visa-free zone for Chinese tourists spanning Laos, Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand, which is expected to further boost inbound tourism to Southeast Asia.

Data from the flight tracker Flight Master showed that the number of direct flights from the Chinese mainland to Laos has already recovered to almost 88 percent of the pre-pandemic level, with direct flights to Vientiane available from Shanghai, Guangzhou, Hangzhou, Chongqing, Kunming, Haikou, and Nanning.

There is also one daily international train round trip, traveling from Kunming in China’s Yunnan province to Vientiane on the China-Laos Railway. A one-way trip takes nine hours and 26 minutes, allowing people to arrive the same day.

Inclusion of Taiwan in Laos Govt's visa-waiver program for Chinese tourists gives false impression: Taiwan's Foreign Ministry

The document issued by the laos government on wednesday said that chinese nationals travelling to laos may visit the country visa-free for up to 15 days as part of a group tour..

Inclusion of Taiwan in Laos Govt's visa-waiver program for Chinese tourists gives false impression: Taiwan's Foreign Ministry

Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) has said that a visa-waiver program for Chinese tourists announced by the Laos government includes elements that gives false impression that Taiwan is part of China, the Central News Agency (CNA) reported. The document issued by the Laos government on Wednesday said that Chinese nationals travelling to Laos may visit the country visa-free for up to 15 days as part of a group tour. It also provided the itinerary approved by the Laotian Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism.

The policy announced by the Laos government, valid from July 1 - December 31, also extends to tourists from Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan, according to the document, Central News Agency (CNA) reported. According to Taiwan's MoFA statement, the inclusion of Taiwan under Laos policy to boost tourism came amid pressure from Beijing and was aimed at giving the false impression that Taiwan is part of China, CNA reported.

Taiwan's MoFA said that Taiwan and China are not subordinate to each other and Laos should not collaborate with China to undermine Taiwan's sovereignty and international standing. Taiwan has shared its position regarding the issue with the Laos government through Taiwan's representative office in Vietnam, according to the statement. Moreover, Taiwan's MoFA said that Taiwanese tourists need on-arrival visas for travelling to Loas despite the policy introduced by the government as per the clause mentioned in the document.

It further stated that there has been no change to the current rule, which requires Taiwanese tourists seeking to travel to Laos to obtain an electronic or on-arrival visa, CNA reported. Taiwan, officially known as the Republic of China, has long been a contentious issue in China's foreign policy, with Beijing considering the island as its territory that must be reunified with the mainland, if necessary by force.
