Callaway X-Forged UT Utility Iron offers better players a blade style long iron with good feel and classy looks. It's quite a compact head which means it is not overly forgiving, but it does offer more margin error than most at this size.
Decent forgivenesss for blade style
Light steel shaft option
Quite compact look at address
Why you can trust Golf Monthly Our expert reviewers spend hours testing and comparing products and services so you can choose the best for you. Find out more about how we test .
The Callaway X-Forged UT Utility Iron is a hollow headed iron that aims to increase driving iron forgiveness in a compact head aimed at better players.
Callaway always make good forgings and when they combine them with technology then you get the best of both worlds. The tech in this case is the Flash Face Cup that is designed using Callaway’s AI computer to optimise performance and forgiveness. The leading edge of the face wraps around the front of the chassis to improve ball speed on low face hits, which makes the relatively shallow profile Callaway X-Forged UT easy to launch the ball.
The forged 1025 carbon steel body is hollow and features a tungsten weight on the rear to draw the CG back to assist with the launch. Whilst the head is quite compact, this design does mean that the curved trailing edge is visible at address on the 18° 2-iron pictured here. This does make the sole a little wider than most blades in the centre area which will help with the forgiveness.
There also also 21° 3-iron and 24° 4-iron versions available too, which may have a different look at address, but it is good to see some options here for those who have a set of blades and are looking for more forgiveness. The X-Forged UT will blend in with most sets of blades thanks to the brushed chrome look. Why not also check out some of the other top spec driving irons on the market on our guide to the best utility irons .
You can get the Callaway X-Forged UT Utility Iron with a True Temper Project X U steel shaft or HZRDUS Smoke Black graphite shaft. We tested with the steel shaft and it was surprisingly light at 110g in stiff, so much so that it almost felt like a graphite shaft and will be a good option for most better players.
The flight from the X-Forged UT was mid-height and the club was easy to launch well for this style of driving iron with good feel. The nature of the compact head means that it will be easy to shape shots if you need to, so this will appeal to single figure players who have a set of Callaways and would like a blade style driving iron to put in the bag. It’s quite an understated look but there is a lot going on in X-Forged UT design that combines modern technology with classic looks to create a good quality utility iron.

Callaway X Forged UT Iron Review
- on March 29, 2018
50 Words or Less
The Callaway X Forged UT iron is the most beautiful driving iron on the market. Not a ton of added forgiveness, but enough for the better player.
Introduction
I’ve been covering golf equipment for long enough to see a lot of trends come and go. While I thought that driving irons/utility irons would be another one-season craze, it seems that they’re here to stay. For 2018, Callaway has released their latest version, the X Forged UT, aimed at players who want to keep that “players” look in their driving iron.
The X Forged UT is gorgeous. Most driving irons have a healthy amount of offset, thick top lines and soles, and unusual cavities or hollow-bodied designs. This club has none of that. The offset is minimal and the top line and sole are moderate in size . If you want a utility iron that won’t stand out in your bag or jar you at address, this is it.
Sound & Feel
On centered strikes , the X Forged UT gives you a crisp sound and feel that’s tremendously satisfying.
When you miss the center, however, this club is not afraid to let you know. Both the sound and feel get very dull on mishits , which is better than a stinging rebuke, but not by much. This is a club for better players, and it has the precise feedback to prove it.
Performance
The X Forged UT is a utility iron for better players . Compared to a regular players iron, the X Forged UT launches a touch higher and is definitely more forgiving on thin strikes. It also produces slightly higher ball speed and, thus, longer shots.
However, in the grand scheme of things, this is not a very forgiving club. If you put a shot on the heel or toe, you’ll see ball speed dip dramatically. Thin shots are helped somewhat, but not as much as they would be with a hybrid.
In short, if you’re currently gaming a long iron and want something a little easier to hit, grab an X Forged UT. If curiosity or ego is driving you to dump your hybrids, dip your toe into the utility iron game with something more forgiving.
The Callaway X Forged UT is a club that’s well-designed for its target player. If you have the ball striking ability and club head speed to play a long iron, but want a little more forgiveness, this is a beautiful choice. For players who need help getting the ball airborne and downrange, stick with hybrids or larger utility irons.

I know this was from a while ago but I have started thinking about a utility iron and respect your take on clubs (have a CBX hybrid partly cause of you ;) ) I’m currently gaming Callaway Apex irons 4i-pw bent 1* weaker (fit this winter at CC). I love the irons and was curious if you felt this in an 18* would be easier/comparable/harder to hit vs picking up the Apex 3i for my set. I’m predominantly looking at this as an off the tee for shorter/tighter par 4s.
Yes, there are very few “regular” irons that are going to be as easy to hit, especially at low loft, as almost any utility iron. I would recommend trying the UT.
Thanks. I’ll get in touch with my guy at CC to get his take and if we should go with the project x that’s in my set or a graphite shaft…….if only we were tour players and could just test these things whenever wanted for free, right?
I picked up an 18* used UT from Callaway. Hoping to get it on the course next week…..looking forward to testing it out. Thanks for your input.
How would you compare the distance of a Xforged UT 24 degree versus a Xforged 4 iron ?
I’m trying to decide which one of those I should get, thanks
The UT is going to be easier to launch and more forgiving, so for most people it’s going to be longer on average.
Comparison to sim udi forgiveness wise? I know it’s probably been to long since this review.
The UDI is a bit more forgiving.
I know it’s been a long time since reviewing both these clubs but how would you compare the 2018 tour preferred UDI vs this Callaway X forged UT? Is there a pretty stand out winner in forgiveness, feel and performance?
I don’t think one is objectively better or easier to hit than the other. Both are fairly demanding.
Hey Matt, eager for you to review the new apex ut from callaway. Will your new level utility ever be beat?
I’m open to change when something is clearly better. I’ll also point out that I am currently splitting my time between the New Level utility and the 4I from my PXG 0317 T set.

PXG’s Allan Putter introduces innovative technology aimed at helping golfers achieve greater stability and control on the greens. Featuring Zero Torque Balance Technology, the putter is designed to minimize face twisting during the stroke, helping to keep the putter face square at impact. This technology is beneficial for all stroke types, making it versatile for golfers of varying skill levels. The putter also boasts an S-hosel design for enhanced balance, a Pyramid Face Pattern to improve roll consistency, and a convenient Pick Up Pocket for easy ball retrieval on the green.
Key Features:
Zero Torque Balance Technology: Reduces the twisting of the putter face during the stroke, promoting more consistent, square impacts.
S-hosel Design: Aligns the shaft above the center of gravity, further enhancing stability and reducing the tendency for the putter face to open or close during the stroke.
Pyramid Face Pattern: A uniquely milled face pattern designed to improve the interaction between the putter and the ball, providing better distance control and a smoother roll.
Pick Up Pocket: A thoughtful design feature that allows golfers to pick up the ball easily without bending over.
Please welcome and congratulate our testers!

I apologize, I really did this all wrong. Chalk it up to a bit a rookie mistake.
Here I a bit more of an intro in to me.
Hi, My name is Cody and I live in Reno, NV
I am 44 years old and have been playing golf for going on 30 years. I started playing in high school. I was on the high school golf team and as I freshman, I remember shooting 120 and losing lots of golf balls. By my senior year I was in the low 80's. I have not improved all that much since then. lol. But, My biggest strength in golf is that in general I hit the ball pretty far. When I am hitting driver well, I tend to shoot pretty good scores. When it is off and I am left to lean on my scrambling and putting. Scores suffer.
I would say that my biggest weakness and the reason that I excited to participate in the test is putting. I have over the years really tried everything. I have left hand low'd. I have long putter'd (pre anchor ban). I have tried everything from 8802 full toe hang putters to center shafted face balanced mallets. All with various levels of success but really still leaving me wanting something else.
(stealing some images from a post a bit further down)
Here is a picture of the last two putters and the Allen Showing toe hang variations and degrees. Most recently I have been using the Toulon Seattle ( Thanks Scottie Scheffler) with a crank neck. It was working pretty well and was a step up from the 8802.
For my handicap, the Grint says that putting is a weakness with my average being around 33 putts/round with at least 1 three putt a round.
I am really looking forward to putting the Allen to the test over the next little while and I am hoping to see that average start to work down. Looking forward to chatting with you all! If you have any kind of question, comment, criticism, or testing suggestions, please let me know! I am happy to go out and try something if it help you understand this product and decide if it is something for you!

INTRO: Hi Fellow Spies!
I would first like to thank PXG for supplying the Allan putters for our testing, and to MGS, without whom we would never get to participate in these tests.
Wifey & I hiking in N. Georgi
I've only been golfing a couple of years. While I'm getting better, I haven't yet broken 100.
Clubs: I am currently playing Cobra AeroJet irons (5-PW), Cobra RadSpeed XB driver, 4 & 5 hybrid, Cobra Baffler 3 wood, Vokey Spin Milled 56°, 60°, and an Odyssey White Hot Stroke Lab OG #7 putter.
I am looking forward to testing this Allan putter. The balance is completely different than my putter, or any other I have tried. I've also never been fitted for a putter before, this is exciting! Thank you again to MGS and PXG!
The Fitting Process:
I received an email from Megan, the PXG PR Coordinator, asking when I wanted to go for my fitting. We decided on a date and time. I went to the PXG store in Lenox Mall, Atlanta on a Saturday, 9/14. It is tucked in with high-end stores like Armani, Bloomingdales, and Ferragamo, to name a few. The store has a very nice high-end feel and appearance. They have a nice assortment of clothing, hats, and accessories.
My fitter was Matt Russell. Super nice guy. He told me the story of PXG and its philosophy. He showed me around and explained the rationale behind the Allan putter design. I took my current putter, an Odessey OG 7 White Hot. Matt placed my putter in a plastic tube with a pin in the top end that went into the hole in the grip. A bottom piece wrapped around the club shaft, but allowed it to spin. It was then slid up into the bottom of the plastic tube. When the club was swung, you could see the face of the club turn away from the target line. He explained how the Allan was designed and built, then performed the same procedure with the Allan. The face of the Allan remained pointing at the target line through the swing.
Not Matt, I forgot to get a picture of the swing device. Matt got a stock Allan putter without a grip. He put on a grip similar to my current grip that tightened with a thumb screw at the base. We tested a few heights until we got it right. Matt asked if I had tried a bigger grip, which I had not. We tried a few grips before deciding on a much larger pistol grip. We then experimented with weights in the putter head until it felt right for me. I spent almost an hour putting and trying out grips, lenghts, and weights.
Matt explains the geometry of the Allan putter.
Sinking them like a pro!
I never felt rushed or pressured to make a decision. Once we had decided on everything, Matt entered the order and said I would hear from them on Monday. He asked what kind of golf ball I usually played, and I told him. He disappeared for a minute and returned with a dozen golf balls and his "card", a poker chip/ball marker. Very cool!
Matt's card and a dozen balls!
True to his word, I got an email Monday saying my club was being made and I would get a tracking number soon. The following day, I got a tracking number. The club arrived on Thursday.
It's here!!!
Unboxing and initial impressions:
Let's get this opened up!
As you'd expect, the PXG Allan putter arrived via FedEx in a regular brown carton. Inside the carton was a PXG box containing the putter I had been waiting for!
The box is the typical size and shape for golf clubs, there were no visible damage or defects. It's pretty eye-catching with its full black appearance and the PXG logo emblazoned across the top.
Opening the top flap revealed the putter securely packed. The PXG logo across the flap, "You've never played like this before."
Contents: 1 Custom fit Allan putter 1 PXG repeat patterned, magnetic close headcover 1 itemized receipt 1 PXG window decal 1 promo flyer for Bob Parson's new book
First impressions:
The putter is very nice looking. Looking at the putter in a black box, it seemed large.
Looking down the shaft at address is a little different. I love the appearance of the club head. The alignment line helps get you on the right path, especially if paired with an alignment stripe on a ball.
The putter face is milled and has a distinct appearance with the diamond cut milling and the PXG logo in the upper right corner.
I like the heft of this putter. I usually leave putts short, so at the fitting we played around with weights to get a weight that would help with distance. Let's face it, I RARELY get it onto the green with a 2' putt remaining. The grip is large and I'm still getting used to it. The balance feels nice on this putter. And speaking of balance, if you balance the club on your finger, the head always points to the target.
My Odyssey points skyward, while an old Wilson demonstrates some toe hang.
My first impressions can be summed up with this video of my first 19' putt with the new Allan putter!
Let's hope I can do the same on the greens!
ON THE COURSE: Coming soon!

Cobra RAD Speed 24° 5 Hybrid
Hello all, my name is Tom. I’m a lifelong resident of Lafayette, Indiana. I like being outdoors- golf, mountain biking, and hiking are my favorite activities. It can be tough to do those things, though, because of life… I’ve been playing golf since the mid-1990s. I play when I can- maybe a time or two per month during the summer. My scores average right around 100. I’m not very competitive in my nature. I play golf to relax and have fun.
I was thrilled to receive a notification of being chosen as a tester of the PXG Allan putter! I do not have any PXG equipment. I am very aware of the brand, but honestly, the prices on their stuff are well beyond my budget. $200 to $450 for a putter? $300 to $650 for a driver? $125 for a polo shirt? Nope, sorry, that’s simply not possible for me. But man, the chance to use one of these putters that makes some great claims, now I am definitely interested in that!
The PXG website makes some impressive comments about this putter. “Technology that keeps your putter face square and on target” and “amazingly effective for players of all abilities and all stroke types” and “PXG’s new Allan Putter performs so well, it feels like magic” are the three that caught my attention. I read everything on the page about the Allan. There appear to be many options to customize the putter so that it “feels like a hand-tailored Italian suit”. I’m not big on dressing up, but I do like to customize things so that they are how I like them, so I’m getting more and more excited with this idea.
This image (it's an amimation on the PXG website) caught my attention. For me, it just makes sense. If the putter head remains perpendicular to my swing, then it seems like it will be square at the time of impact. This should result in putts going where I aim them.
I looked through my stats since August of 2022. I see that I am averaging 2.1 putts per hole. I feel like I’m decent with my current Odyssey Versa 2-Ball putter. (Garmin tells me that I’m above average in this portion of my game.) It was a gift from a friend, and I really do like it. Maybe it’s partly sentimental, but I’ve made some good long-distance putts with it. He is the one that I golfed with most often. He could out-drive me, but I was able to keep things close with a better short game. He has since moved out west, but I still have the putter!
Soon I will have an experience (or is it an experiment?) like I’ve never had before. A custom fitting for a high-dollar club. The fitting has been scheduled for September 17. Temperatures (and work) are cooling off, so I am going to get out on the course to see how this putter can help my game. My wife has been driving the cart for me more lately, so I have a photographer. She also loves numbers, so she is excited to see if I can lower my putts per hole number. I’ve got a spreadsheet with some basic stats to compare the before and after.
Can the Allan live up to the hype? Lower putts per hole is the only thing that matters to me with this club. As I’ve already said, I’m excited to use the club because I consider it a high-dollar item. Does the price lead to better results? The website says very nice stuff. But, honestly, nobody is going to make a product, create a flashy website, and promote their "amazing" new item just to tell you that’s it only mediocre. Actions speak louder than words. The proof is in the pudding. “Nobody makes golf clubs the way we do. Period.” Will Allan earn a spot in my bag? We shall see!

Hello spies!
Thanks for stopping by my introduction post for the PXG Allen test.
First, I would like to start off by thanking the MGS staff for selecting me for this test. The testing opportunities on this forum are a unique way of allowing everyday golfers to test gear and share their experience without having a marketing twist to it. I’m very excited to get things started and hopefully provide some of my fellow spies with some insights on my experience with what most golfers see as PXG's response to the popularity of the L.A.B. Golf putters.
My name is Derek and I live in the North Phoenix/North Scottsdale area. As with most Arizonans, I am a Midwest transplant (Illinois). I grew up in the East Valley of the Phoenix Metro area and then spent nearly twelve years in Tucson, before finally making it back to Phoenix in 2021. When I left for college in 2009, I expected to be back in Phoenix within a few months of graduating, but Tucson has this weird Hotel California way of sucking people in. I love living in Arizona for many reasons, but one new reason is how readily living here fuels my recent obsession with golf.
(Me off the coast of South Carolina April 2024)
To bank roll my increasingly troubling golf habits I work in the healthcare industry working on integration of artificial intelligence to automate financial and clinical workstreams. It is interesting work, especially since AI has just gotten to the point of being commercially viable so I get to be on the forefront of finding solutions to complex problems.
I’m a bit of a busy body so when I’m not working, I am generally doing something related to my ever-expanding list of hobbies/interests. For about three years now I’ve been training in Brazilian jiu jitsu two to three times a week. I have to say that this has helped my golf game more than I would have expected. I generally hit the driving range every weekend, and in weeks where I haven’t trained in BJJ as much I feel much stiffer and out of sync.
Enough about the boring stuff, let’s talk golf. I started playing golf in my early teens. My dad and uncle would play sometimes and introduced me to it. I never got super into it, and for my first couple years of college I didn’t even have clubs with me. For the past 15 years I would go golf ever so often or head to the driving range, but I was by no means an avid golfer. Then came the bachelor party.
(Jan 2024 Bachelor party golf event, I’m labeled with the red arrow…the short guy, you can’t miss me)
In January of this year, I got to celebrate the marriage of one of my closest friends. One of the team-based events during the three-day bachelor party was an 18-hole scramble with each hole having special rules and potential bonus points. Prior to this round, I hadn’t played a full round of golf since 2020. I had such a blast that three weeks later I was getting fit for new clubs to replace the starter set I had been playing since high school. I've played 20 rounds since then and will likely finish the year with about 30 rounds on the books.
Testing Focus
To start, I'll be doing my best to let all of you how the ball rolls with the Allen. this wouldn't be a putter test if that wasn't the first question, right? Second, and I'll try to address the elephant in the room... how does the Allen compare to the L.A.B Golf putters?
My review will include information about my experience with both my L.A.B. Golf DF3 and the PXG Allen.
(My custom DF3)
I'm looking forward to getting this test going and answering any questions that come up from my fellow spies. If you have anything specific you want answered, please don't hesitate to tag me in the thread or DM me.

Congratulations testers! This is a test I'm really interested in, I'm curious to see if PXG has been able to tap into the magic of torque balanced putters. It's also a very good looking piece of equipment, I love me a nice looking mallet.

I have a cobra rad speed driver, cobra fly z 3 and 5 wood, taylormade m1 irons (5-PW), Top Flite Gamer wedges (52,56,60), and odyssey white ice putter. When I’m playing to keep score I typically play the Maxfli Tour X. Our Condition Guide
Every callaway golf pre-owned & outlet club has been thoroughly inspected and rated according to its individual condition:, outlet condition:.
This is our highest rated Certified Pre-Owned condition. Outlet condition clubs have never been hit. However, they cannot be sold as new as they could have been floor samples or demo clubs. Outlet condition clubs could exhibit some minor scuffs on the sole or other form of shop-wear.
Outlet - What It Means...
Like new condition:.
These clubs have been hit very few times and show the smallest amount of wear.
Like New Condition - What It Means...
Very good condition:.
Unlike our Like New condition, these clubs have clearly been hit but are in fantastic shape. They may have a few scratches if you look closely but will still look like the newest club in most bags.
Very Good Condition - What It Means...
Good condition:.
These clubs have seen normal use (usually several seasons) but are in better than average shape for that particular model club. They may have some cosmetic imperfections but will look better than the average club in most players’ bags.
Good Condition - What It Means...
Average condition:.
These clubs have been used but not abused. They will show normal wear from frequent play and may have natural scratches, pop up marks and/or bag wear on the shaft. These are great clubs for those looking for performance and value and are less concerned about cosmetics.
Average Condition - What It Means...
Technology specs.
Forged Precision and Performance
We used extensive input from Tour players in this forged design. The CG is strategically positioned in line with the center of the face for maximum ball speed and a straighter flight.
More Control and Forgiveness
The tungsten infused insert increases MOI, making it easier to control shots with easy launch and long carry. The hollow body construction also adds forgiveness in a traditional long iron shape.
Longer Average Distance
Our industry-leading 360 Face Cup technology increases ball speed with greater efficiency on center hits, and further minimizes distance loss on off-center hits.

Ticket prices for the Trans-Siberian Railway also depend on the current ruble exchange rate.
Is the Trans-Siberian Railway expensive?
Before starting on your Trans-Siberian Railway adventure you naturally want to know what the entire trip will cost. Although this sounds like a simple question, it is pretty difficult to answer. The Trans-Siberian Railway price of travel depends on the following factors:
- Which travel class do I want to use? The price for a first class ticket is about three times the price of a 3rd class ticket
- Am I willing to buy the tickets myself and assume responsibility for the organisation of the trip?
- How many stopovers do I want to make? The more breaks, the higher the total price.
- What sort of accommodation do I want? Will it be a luxury hotel or will a hostel dormitory be sufficient?
- What tours and excursions would I like to go on?
- What is the current exchange rate for rubles?
Basically, everything from a luxury to a budget holiday is available. If you buy yourself a 3rd Class nonstop ticket at the counter, a few hundred Euros will cover the price. All you will experience is a week on the Trans-Siberian train and will see nothing of the cities on the way. There is, however, any amount of room for upward expansion. Everyone makes different choices about which aspects they are willing to spend money on. I personally prefer to save money on accommodation and railcar class, visit as many cities and do as many trips as possible. To enable better classification of your travel expenses I have contrasted two typical traveler types. In the third column you can calculate the total cost of your own journey on the Trans-Siberian Railway. Please keep in mind that these are only rough estimations and not exact prices.
The all-in costs seem fairly high at first. However, they cover everything and it is quite a long journey taking four weeks. Many people forget to consider that when looking at the list. We should also deduct the running costs for food and leisure at home. I think most visitors to this page will classify themselves somewhere between the two categories, that is around the € 2,000 – € 2,500 range. When comparing these prices with other travel packages, you get the impression that it is hardly worthwhile travelling individually on the Trans-Siberian Railway. Please keep in mind that most packages last no more than 14 days and you are herded like cattle through the most beautiful locations.
If you spend less time on the Trans-Siberian Railway you will, of course, pay less. I chose this particular travel length because I prefer not to do things by halves. If you fulfill your dream of travelling on the Trans-Siberian Railway, enjoy it and don’t rush things. But it’s up to you, of course. Try playing around with the form a bit to find the appropriate price for your trip.

Looks. The 2020 Callaway X Forged UT has a look that will blend in well with most players irons. Its top line is similar in width to a GI iron - not huge but not thin. There's very little offset, but there is a little sole visible behind the topline at address. One thing I like about the X Forged UT is that the face isn't super shallow.
Designed by Roger Cleveland and used by Nick Dougherty among others, this utility iron has been created with the better player in mind. The hollow head has been forged from 1020 carbon steel and features Extreme Notch Weighting to create a combination of feel and stability that should increase accuracy and make this club versatile enough to use from the tee and off the fairway.

An expanded set of loft offerings suggests Callaway will seek to position the X-Forged UT as more versatile than its previous utility irons. Where the Apex Utility was only available in 2 through 4 irons (18°, 21 ° and 24 ° degree lofts), the X-Forged UT, with its 27 ° 5-iron and a 30° 6-iron may creep into the middle of some bags in much the same way that Mizuno's MP18 MMC Fli-HIs and ...

Performance. The X Forged UT is a utility iron for better players. Compared to a regular players iron, the X Forged UT launches a touch higher and is definitely more forgiving on thin strikes. It also produces slightly higher ball speed and, thus, longer shots. However, in the grand scheme of things, this is not a very forgiving club.
The Callaway X Tour irons are two piece forged irons that offer control and playability for mid- to low handicap golfers. The face is laser welded to the forged body. This allowed Callaway to incorporate the 360° Undercut cavity to improve forgiveness with increased perimeter weighting. This results is a very playable iron that maintains the ...
