Active Sport Tourism 1st Edition

Purchase options and add-ons.

This volume serves to expand theory-driven understandings of active sport tourism by showcasing five empirical studies examining a variety of active sport tourism contexts. These include table tennis at the World Veteran’s Championships, ultramarathon, running/cycling/triathlon, skiing/snowboarding, and a range of issues such as active ageing and travel-related carbon footprints. The volume also seeks to explore possibilities for future directions in active sport tourism and act as a catalyst for ongoing scholarly inquiry.

Travelling to take part in active sporting pursuits is growing in popularity around the world. Active sport tourism encompasses travel to participate in a myriad sports, as well as in competitive participatory sport events. Much of the recent growth in active sport tourism is associated with travel to compete in participatory sport events, notably the "big city" international marathon events; amateur running, triathlon, and cycling events; Masters Games; and team sport tournaments. While the broader sport tourism research literature has tended to focus on spectator-oriented sports events, particularly the mega events such as the Olympic Games, it is only recently that a concerted research agenda in active sport tourism has emerged, making this volume innovative and relevant.

Disney’s ESPN Rolls Out Its First Travel Experiences

Jesse Chase-Lubitz , Skift

July 2nd, 2024 at 11:59 AM EDT

ESPN dives into the experiences market with a high-end MLB tour, blending sports and travel for die-hard fans.

Jesse Chase-Lubitz

Sports network ESPN has launched a new experiences brand and tickets for its first sports tour are selling for $6,999 per person.

The network, which is majority-owned by the Walt Disney Company, had noticed a rising demand in the experiences space and wanted to capitalize on the significant spending, an ESPN spokesperson told Skift.

Additional studies into its fan base showed that ESPN would be a favorable brand to offer tours and activities, the spokesperson said.

The network plans to use this initial tour as a test. The success of this first offering will determine the if ESPN maintains the ESPN Experiences offering. Some tickets were purchased but the experience is not yet sold out, the spokesperson said.

The tour includes a five-day, four-night Major League Baseball over the U.S. Labor Day weekend between August 29 and September 2. It is powered by Adventures by Disney.

The tour will include stops at Fenway Park in Boston, Yankee Stadium in New York City, and Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia. It will also include a private tour of the Jackie Robinson Museum and exclusive access to the ESPN Headquarters in Bristol, Connecticut.

The rise of sports tourism

Sporting events often significantly boost tourism and bring revenue to host cities. For example, online travel companies saw a surge in sports tourism in India this year related to its hosting of major events.

While these findings largely refer to individuals traveling to attend specific events, the growth will likely be seen industry-wide.

Sports tourism already generates 10% of the world’s expenditure on tourism, according to UN Tourism. It is expected to grow by 17.5% between 2023 and 2030. This can range from mega events like the Olympics or the World Cup to less popular attractions that feature sports as part of the trip.

CORRECTION : Due to an editor’s error, this article originally said Walt Disney Company also runs tours on behalf of Lindblad Expeditions under Disney’s National Geographic brand, but it’s actually Lindblad operating tours on behalf of Disney and National Geographic .

From classroom to fairway: Mekhi Gibson's impactful USGA internship

Mekhi Gibson poses in front of USGA signage

An opportunity presented to Mekhi Gibson as a University of South Carolina Department of Sport and Entertainment Management student opened the door to a prestigious internship with the United States Golf Association.

Gibson, a rising sophomore, attended the department-hosted Sport Entertainment & Venues Tomorrow (SEVT) conference in November of his freshman year. The annual event includes a job fair and networking opportunities with industry leaders.

"I met Joe Jackson, the talent acquisition manager for the USGA," Gibson says. "At first, I just wanted to ask him to be a source for a paper I was writing, but after talking to him for a while he encouraged me to apply for the program."

The program Jackson encouraged Gibson to pursue was the USGA Pathways Internship, a 10-day immersive experience designed to expose outstanding college and graduate students from diverse backgrounds to different careers in golf by providing training, education and networking opportunities.

The USGA created the internship in 2022 in an effort to address opportunity imbalance in golf. "There are more than two million jobs within the $84 billion golf industry, but only a small fraction are held by those from underrepresented communities," according to the USGA website.

"It's important that we continue to open opportunities for everyone to work and play in golf," says USGA CEO Mike Whan. "Relationships are built and fostered on-site at championships, and the framework we've created with the Pathways Internship allows students to get that same opportunity, which can help to jumpstart their careers."

Gibson applied and was chosen along with 23 other students from all over the country. They spent 10 days at Pinehurst Resort in North Carolina, including attending the 2024 U.S. Open. The internship included  a series of classroom and behind-the-scenes training sessions at the U.S. Open as well as direct exposure to key championship departments including player services, merchandising, operations, media and hospitality.

Gibson and his fellow interns also met with key golf industry leaders as well as business executives from outside the industry.

"My favorite part was connecting with my fellow interns. We all came from different backgrounds (and some from different countries), but we all bonded well and became friends very quickly," Gibson says. "I think what will be most helpful is the advice that USGA President Fred Perpall gave us. He told us, 'A great life is pursuing what you can give.' That resonates with me because we try to put value in accomplishments and materialistic things instead of seeing how we can help others succeed."

The USGA annually funds more than 270 paid internships across the country. USC Department of Sport and Entertainment Management 2024 graduate John Salazar and current student Tanner Lewis are taking part in this year's P.J. Boatwright Jr. Internship Program through the USGA's network of 57 Allied Golf Associations.

Missing 12-year-old girl's remains found after crocodile attack

The remains of a 12-year-old girl have been found in Australia after an apparent crocodile attack . Police said the girl's remains were found in a river system near where she went missing two days earlier in the Northern Territory's Indigenous community of Palumpa, according to The Associated Press .

Northern Territory Police said Thursday that the injuries on the girl's body confirmed a crocodile attack, adding that her remains were found after an "extensive search effort."

"The recovery has been made. It was particularly gruesome and a sad, devasting outcome," Senior Sergeant Erica Gibson said. "It was an extremely difficult, essentially 36 hours... For the family, it is the most devastating outcome possible for them. They are in a state of extreme shock and disbelief."

In a statement shared on the Facebook page for the Northern Territory's emergency services, Gibson said officers were providing support to the family and the local community.

Gibson was quoted by the AP a saying officials were still trying searching for the crocodile to trap the animal, as the territorial creatures often remain in and around the same area.

"We live in a place where crocodiles occupy our water places," Northern Territory Police Minister Brent Potter said, according to CBS News partner network  BBC News . "It's just a reminder to stay out of the water as best we can."

According to the Northern Territory's tourism site, the region is home to the world's largest wild crocodile population, with more than 100,000 freshwater and saltwater predators. The latter can grow up to 20 feet long.

"The more common and more dangerous species is the saltwater crocodile," the tourism website says. "These 'salties' side along the coastline and waterways of the Territory. They have a taste for fish, but will eat just about anything including cows and buffaloes, wild boar, turtles, birds and crabs."

REBRANDING FOR TOURISM: GTAA now called Oklahoma Ozarks Tourism Association

Jul. 4—The Greater Tenkiller Area Association has changed its name to better reflect its vision of tourism.

Director Gena McPhail and Stan Weed, co-director, said the new logo and color palette for the Oklahoma Ozarks Tourism Association will be revealed July 9.

"We changed the name because we are a multicounty organization that falls under the state statute of Oklahoma tourism," McPhail said. "And we actually market Sequoyah County and Cherokee County, so we needed to have a broader voice than the name allowed."

John Ellis serves as president of the board, Austin Spears is vice president, and Genny Maiden is secretary/treasurer. Diana Rutland, George Harris, James Thornton Sr., Ron Pomeroy, Kenyatta Wright, Ed Brocksmith, Karen Young and Tim Knight serve as board members.

Rutland worked in sales and marketing for Cherokee Landing, Greenleaf State Park and Tenkiller Lake for 17 years before she retired.

"I have a passion for promoting this area," Rutland said. "I'm willing to tell anyone who will listen of this area's cultural, historical [background] and it's gift of nature. It's a little slice of heaven on earth."

Rutland moved to the Tenkiller Lake area from Oklahoma City when her children were young. She said they enjoyed fishing, the pond on their property, and four-wheeling.

McPhail said she is very supportive of the river businesses, and the GTAA name didn't give those businesses the needed recognition.

The organization promotes all in the area, but there is added value to being a member, with products like specific marketing packages, McPhail said.

Weed said he started helping Kenyatta Wright, former director, with computer programming and photography.

"Making Stan my co-director — I couldn't go wrong because having the opportunity to utilize his talents on a daily basis was priceless to me," McPhail said.

Plans for OOTA include building the organization to be like Tahlequah Tourism and Explore Cherokee County. McPhail resigned as director of Tourism with the Tahlequah Area Chamber of Commerce in late March.

"Our goal [is to bring that kind of exposure] on a state level and a national level, McPhail said. "[We're] very conscious of conservation and preserving the life of our lake and the life of our fish," McPhail said.

Five Bassmaster tournaments are in place at this time, and McPhail said she is working with five others.

Ed Brocksmith, co-founder of Save The Illinois River, said he appreciates all the work OOTA is doing for Lake Tenkiller and the Illinois River. This is why he serves on the board, Brocksmith said.

"Not all associations are ready to take a strong stand for water quality, but [OOTA] is always at the forefront," Brocksmith said.

McPhail said she was in Colorado two weeks ago with the Colorado BASS Nation. This is a global network of locally organized clubs with members who participate in and support a range of activities, including tournaments, conservation initiatives and youth programs, states the Bassmaster website.

"They had their state qualifying tournament here and it was great to be able to make those connections," McPhail said. "They are helping us with other tournaments to be brought into the area."

The waterways OOTA represents are Tenkiller Lake, Kerr Lake, Fort Gibson Lake, Greenleaf Lake and the upper and lower Illinois River, as well as the surrounding towns, McPhail said.

"Lake Tenkiller is No. 11 of the most beautiful lakes in the U.S.," McPhail said.

McPhail said the many restaurants — like Piddles Cajun Bar and Grill and Barnacle Bills Marina — give customers a wide variety of foods to choose from while visiting lakes, and she wants to support these businesses.

There are plans to install signs warning against dumping dogs because numerous animals are being dumped around the lake area, McPhail said.

First of all, signs needs to be installed against dumping animals, McPhail said. A fine for dumping is on McPhail's wish list. A woman told McPhail she had four dogs and two cats dropped off in her driveway.

"My wife, Diana, rescued four puppies, and it cost us $75 each to take them to a vet," Weed said. "So a person can't even do anything right without it costing a lot of money."

Check it out

The OOTA address is 451565 Highway 100, Vian. The phone number is 918-457-4403.

I stayed in 2 of Arizona's top hotels. They explain why Scottsdale is a luxury travel hot spot.

  • Scottsdale and Paradise Valley, Arizona, offer luxury travel experiences.
  • The vast majority of hotel rooms in both Phoenix suburbs are upscale.
  • I stayed in the area's top-rated hotels, the Phoenician and the Hermosa Inn. They epitomized luxury.

Insider Today

Secret exits, private outdoor spaces, high-tech golf carts, dramatic chandeliers, award-winning restaurants , and cowboy artifacts — I saw them all during my trip to Scottsdale without leaving my hotel.

Tourists travel to Arizona for luxury resorts, spas, and golf clubs, Condé Nast Traveler reported in 2023 .

Scottsdale , in particular, draws affluent travelers with its health and wellness scene, upscale dining experiences, and top-tier golf courses. So, it's no wonder the area caters to high-end travel.

Scottsdale has more luxurious hotel rooms than standard ones — 80% of the city's 12,500 rooms are classified as luxury level or higher (upscale and upper upscale), according to a Scottsdale tourism report published in 2022 in partnership with Experience Scottsdale , a travel company that has helped establish the city's luxe tourism reputation.

The only place in the area with a higher concentration of luxury accommodations than Scottsdale — 90% of rooms — is Paradise Valley, the wealthier suburb between Phoenix and Scottsdale.

But tourists see Paradise Valley as a part of Scottsdale, according to the report — probably because the towns are close together and offer comparable pampering experiences and jaw-dropping views.

I recently spent two nights in Arizona and booked one night in each suburb's top luxury hotel.

I spent my first night at the Phoenician in Scottsdale , a luxury Marriott Hotel dubbed "Arizona's leading resort" in the 2023 World Travel Awards .

On day two, I headed to Paradise Valley to stay at the boutique Hermosa Inn , which Travel + Leisure called the best hotel in Arizona in 2023.

These similar superlatives made me think the Phoenician and the Hermosa Inn would provide comparable luxury experiences . In reality, the two hotels were completely different.

Still, both showed me why these Phoenix suburbs are hot spots for wealthy travelers.

In Scottsdale, I stayed at the Phoenician — an upscale mega-resort.

The multimillion-dollar luxury Marriott Hotel opened in 1988 and has been renovated several times to amp up its upscale offerings — most recently in 2018.

The Phoenician has 645 rooms on its 600-acre property at the base of Camelback Mountain. The gated hotel grounds are full of activities ranging from sports to relaxation. It's the kind of hotel with so much to do that guests could spend their whole vacation on the property .

In Paradise Valley, I stayed at the Hermosa Inn, a boutique hotel with a completely different vibe.

gibson sport tourism

The vast majority of Scottsdale and Paradise Valley hotels have more than 50 rooms, making the wealthier suburb's 43-room Hermosa Inn a unique option for those seeking seclusion.

The Hermosa Inn isn't luxurious in a glitzy sense. Instead, it marvels guests by making them feel like they traveled to the 20th-century Western era.

Its roots as a 1930s cowboy's home and studio are evident upon arrival with adobe bricks, beehive fireplaces, historic artwork from paintings to silk, and artifacts like worn saddles and Stetson hats.

I thought the Hermosa Inn was ideal for travelers craving privacy and a personal touch.

The Hermosa Inn's 43 stand-alone casitas are secluded accommodations situated next to discrete exits. Guest service agent Tami Norton told Business Insider that the hotel often hosts celebrities and executives in the public eye, and its small size allows it to accommodate special, personalized requests.

For example, Norton noted a recent guest in town to perform.

"The hours they keep are quite different; they arrive back on the property late at night and need to sleep in during the day," she said of performers. "So that particular guest needed the room totally blacked out before they came. We blacked out everything from the skylight down to the glow of the thermostat."

AZ Central reported that Clark Gable, Whitney Houston , David Spade, and Tyrese Gibson have dined and stayed at the Hermosa Inn.

Norton told BI that actors often have strict dietary restrictions that the kitchen accommodates by ordering special ingredients and portioning them out with a scale. She added that guests can also request small appliances in their rooms for protein shakes and other quick meals.

Both hotels had upscale rooms with king-sized beds, large bathrooms, and private outdoor spaces.

My deluxe room at the Phoenician was filled with modern furniture with Southwestern accents. From the comfy bed and oversized tub to the balcony, the room epitomized 21st-century luxury .

While the Phoenician room was modern, the Hermosa Inn casita had a more traditional luxury brand.

gibson sport tourism

At the Hermosa Inn, I slept in what was essentially a small house. It was easily the biggest hotel room I've stayed in.

Unlike the Phoenician, the Hermosa Inn's room didn't feel modern at all. The Southwestern vibe was all-encompassing, from the furniture to the decor. It felt more unique than the room at the Phoenician while boasting the same amenities, including a large tub and bed.

The Hermosa Inn room also had a beehive fireplace and a skylight. Rather than a balcony, the one-story accommodation had a private patio.

Both hotels housed renowned dining hot spots.

The high-quality dining at each hotel attracts more than just hotel guests with buzzy, award-winning restaurants.

Three of the Phoenician's eight dining venues and bars — Mowry & Cotton, J&G Steakhouse, and Thirsty Camel — have received kudos from Forbes Travel Guide, Open Table, and Trip Advisor, according to the hotel's website .

LON's, the Hermosa Inn's only restaurant and bar, is known by Food & Wine for its romantic vibe. It offers outdoor seating surrounded by vibrant gardens and beehive fireplaces. Open Table has included LON's in its roundup of the best brunch menus in the country for four years running.

The Hermosa Inn's restaurant added a wine cellar 20 years ago for ultra-VIP dining.

In its 2003 renovations, LON's upgraded its VIP offerings, adding a small dining room in an underground wine cellar and an exclusive tasting menu.

The Phoenician has also gotten several upgrades, including an award-winning, three-story spa with two pools.

gibson sport tourism

With the most spas per capita in the US, according to Go Banking Rates , Scottsdale is a hot spot for health and wellness tourism .

The Phoenician is ideal for a rejuvenating trip thanks to its award-winning, three-story spa renovated in 2018.

The dramatic entryway greets patrons with an artistic chandelier and golden details throughout the spa. In addition to massage and facial treatment rooms, a sauna, and a meditation room, the facility has two pools — one on the rooftop — a nail salon, and a dry bar for hair styling.

There's also a fitness room where guests can work with a personal trainer.

The same hotel has five more outdoor pools, including one made of pearl tiles imported from Italy.

gibson sport tourism

The massive Phoenician pool complex includes a splash pad and an adults-only pool.

But the most luxurious of the five is the serenity pool made of Italian Mother-of-Pearl tiles that cost $1 million, according to the company's website . The hand-placed tiles give the pool an iridescent shine similar to the inside of a sea shell.

The Phoenician Golf Club takes the upscale sport to another level.

gibson sport tourism

I'm no golfer, but it's easy to see why those who play would stay at the Phoenician.

The 18-hole course and club, renovated in 2018, wowed me with views and high-tech features. Players rode around the pristine course lined with gardens and fountains against a mountain backdrop in golf carts with GPS screens that stream news and entertainment.

Whether you're looking for a private vacation or one where you don't have to leave the hotel, Scottsdale has it all.

gibson sport tourism

After staying at both resorts, there was undoubtedly more to do at the Phoenician. I could see why travelers craving a mega-resort vacation where they don't have to navigate the city to have a good time would pick the Phoenician for their luxury vacation.

But the Hermosa Inn is a better choice for those desiring a unique and exclusive stay with large, private accommodations and plenty of personal attention.

If you stay at both, as I did, luxury travelers can have it all in Scottsdale and Paradise Valley. That's why I think so many wealthy vacationers choose the Arizona hot spot for their getaways.

NFL suspends free agent S Tashaun Gipson for six games

  • Charean Williams

The NFL has suspended free agent safety Tashaun Gipson for the first six games of the 2024 season, according to the daily transactions report. The league does not specify the reason, but Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that Gipson violated the NFL’s performance enhancing substances policy.

Gipson, 33, spent the past two seasons with the 49ers and started 34 of a possible 35 regular-season games and all six postseason games.

He recorded one sack, one interception and three passes defensed in 16 games in 2023.

Gipson has played for five teams in his 12 seasons, totaling 684 tackles, 33 interceptions and 68 pass breakups.

His only Pro Bowl came in 2014 with the Browns.
