Norwegian Fjords Cruise: 32 Tips You NEED to Know

In June 2018 I took a cruise around the Norwegian Fjords with my lovely Mum. In this post, I’ll share with you the things I wish I knew before my first cruise to Norway. Including:

When is the best time to cruise the Norwegian Fjords?

The Norwegian Fjords cruising season runs from May until September. The only cruise line that offers Norwegian Fjords cruises all year round is Hurtigruten. Peak time tends to be in July and August with this itinerary being particularly popular with families.

In the UK children are off school from mid-July until early September so if you can avoid travelling at this time I would, not only will it be busier but it’ll be significantly more expensive!

When is The Best Time to Cruise to Norway? Seasons, Price, Weather and More

Norwegian Fjords tip #1

• I would recommend cruising at the beginning or end of the summer season. You’ll get the best deals at this time and the ships won’t be too busy. May-June or September would be be my recommendation. You still have a good chance of some sunshine but more on that later in the post…

Be aware that if you travel in the summer, it will be light a lot of the time. Sleeping is never a problem for me, but it is a bit confusing when you have been out for dinner, watched the show, come out and it is still daylight! – Gaynor Le Teace (my mum)

It’s true! In some parts of Norway they even have a ‘midnight sun’. Cruise ship cabins usually have pretty thick curtains so I don’t have any trouble sleeping but if you are somebody who cannot tolerate even the smallest amount of light in the room when you sleep then you might want to consider an inside cabin.

What is the weather like on a Norwegian Fjords cruise?

The weather in Norway is unpredictable and very often wet. The weather in Summer SHOULD be dry and can even be pretty warm. We cruised in June and it rained every single day… However, I have a few friends who cruised two weeks earlier had glorious sunshine every day and temperatures reached 30c! (90f). I would not base your decision on when to go around the weather. It’s extremely unpredictable!

• Take sensible shoes, a waterproof jacket, jeans, jumpers (sweaters). As I mentioned above we had rain every single day. Annoyingly the UK was experiencing a heat wave at the time! A waterproof jacket/a coat is without a doubt the most important thing you should pack. I wore my red coat every single day.

• Make sure you pack some dresses/shorts! This one might seem a bit silly given what I said above but the weather can reach 30c (90f). It can also vary a lot between ports so just because you have one rainy day doesn’t mean it will rain for the entire cruise.

Pack some small binoculars – I forgot mine. Obviously didn’t pay enough attention to the holiday packing spreadsheet in my excitement! – Gaynor Le Teace (my mum)

The views are INCREDIBLE as you sail around the Norwegian Fjords. I don’t really use binoculars but mum likes to so if you’d like to spy on people as you go by it can be worth packing binoculars. A good camera with a zoom can also work the same way.

• Bring the best camera you have! (Or at least your phone). All of my photos were taken on my iPhone because quite frankly I have no idea how to use a decent DSLR camera. You’ll want to take SO many photos. Look at this!! It’s INCREDIBLE.

• Bring your phone and use it. I usually say you should keep your phone in airplane mode when you are at sea. However, when cruising around the Norwegian Fjords you’re often close enough to land to be able to pick up 4G from land. If you are in doubt about how your phone will work at sea I have another post about that here: How do mobile phones work at sea? (If you’re American a mobile phone = a cell phone). I know we don’t go on cruises to spend all of our time on our phone but being able to send messages/emails/photos to friends and family back home is always a bonus.Mum mostly used it to send photos of me to my dad…

• Make sure you book whatever tours you’d like to do as early as possible. We booked ours onboard and a lot of them were already sold out which limited our options. Ideally, you should book the tours before you travel. It’s usually possible to do this on the website of most cruise lines. If not try and book the tours on the first day to avoid disappointment!I am below looking very pleased with myself at the Briksdal glacier in Olden.

• Be aware that a lot of things are closed on Sundays! If you are docking on a Sunday don’t assume that shops will be open. It’s always best to do your research and check before you cruise.

• Look out for weird things in the souvenir shops… I managed to find a whale sausage!

Always get up early to see the sail in to port, the views are incredible. (Even if you have to wear the aforementioned jeans, jacket, jumper, hat etc. – Gaynor Le Teace (my mum)

• Bring your quilt onto the balcony! (Duvet). I’m not kidding. If you can also make yourself a cup of tea that’ll make it even better! I mostly had to do this because I hadn’t planned for such cold weather so didn’t bring the right clothes. Hopefully by reading this post you won’t make the same mistake that I did! (I thought June would be okay!)

Unless there is somewhere you particularly wish to visit, look at at the weather forecast before booking excursions..

It is rather a waste of money to book an expensive trip up a mountain or to see the Troll Wall when everything is shrouded in fog, and you can’t see anything anyway! When we got to the top of the funicular railway in Bergen this is the view that we were greeted with…

Bergen cruise port tips

Norwegian fjords tip #15.

• Take the funicular railway! The number one attraction in Bergen appears to be the funicular railway. It is a gentle stroll to the bottom of the railway, and easy to pay by credit card – no kroner needed. Approx £9.75 for two adults one way. Once at the top it is a lovely walk back down the hill on a tarmacked road, through the wooded hillside. No need to pay for an excursion!. We found out from a fellow passenger later that there is actually a lake ten minutes from top of the hill, may be worth a look if its a sunny day.

• If you do take the funicular railway go later in the day. We went in the morning and couldn’t see a thing because of the fog! We could have been anywhere. If you are physically able to, make sure you walk back down. The path is a winding road and you’ll see some amazing sights along the way! It was really cool for us to be able to get below the clouds and see the ships.

• Look out for the trees that have their own jumpers! I’m not kidding.

• Be aware that you may sail away from Bergen quite early. I’m not too sure why they do this but a sail away of 3 pm can be quite standard. It’s probably just because this is the last port on the itinerary for cruise lines like P&O and Princess. The cruise line will let you know what time the ship is set to sail.

Stavanger Cruise Tips

• Visit the old town. It is easy to wander around is and genuinely just a lovely place! There will be a lot of tourists here. I wonder what it would be like to live in one of these houses with thousands of tourists wandering up and down your street. No wonder they all have net curtains.

• Visit the petroleum museum. Okay, this one is a little weird. I had no idea that there was a petroleum museum in Stavanger but SO many people have asked me if I went. They all seem to love it! It has a 4.5/5 star rating on trip advisor so must be something special…

• Be careful when walking around the roads. Even in the newer part of town, the roads can be a little difficult. If you are in a wheelchair it may be a good idea to stick to the main streets and not venture up and down all of the little cobbled streets that I found myself wandering around.

• Check out the other ships. There are usually multiple cruise ships docked in Stavanger at the same time. Make sure you get out and have a peek at the other ships! This is always one of my favourite things to do in a port. We were docked beside the MSC Orchestra and the Viking Sun. (Bit ironic since it rained every day on this cruise).

• Wander around the lake at Stravanger park. There is a lovely little park not too far from the cruise port. It is easy to walk there and wandering around the lake is very pleasant. Even in the rain, it was lovely. The park is right beside a cathedral.

• Have your photo taken with a troll. Go on, you know you want too!

• Visit the Briksdal glacier. I would 100% recommend doing this. The glacier is SO COOL (mind the pun) and there are lots of lovely paths to walk around near it. There is even a couple of toilets here which I really appreciated. It takes around 45 minutes to get here from the cruise ship but you’ll get to see some amazing views on the way.

• Skip the Loen Skylift. We took the Loen Skylift and I honestly wouldn’t recommend it. The price of this is around £50 per person! (I know Norway is expensive but that is mad). The skylift only goes up and down every 30 minutes and 35 people fit in one skylift meaning you can’t really see anything on the way up or down. I really hate to be negative and tell people not to do things but I honestly just thought this was a waste of money. The views are really good but I don’t think £50 worth of good. Maybe it would have been better if it wasn’t so blooming cold!!

• Take as many photos of the ship as you can! There is NO better backdrop than that of the Norwegian Fjords. Even in bad weather, the ships look amazing. I honestly think the clouds and fog add a little something which makes it seem mysterious?!

• Do NOT miss the sail away! As we departed Olden a small cafe on the ship blasted out ‘I am sailing’ by Rod Stewart followed by ‘Time tooo…. say… goooddbyyyyyeee’ by Katherine Jenkins.  Don’t pretend you didn’t just sing that in your head. I did!

• Take a gamble on the troll wall? I’m not TOO sure if this really counts as a tip but I would say think twice about booking a trip to the bottom of troll wall. If the weather is bad you won’t see a thing. I hadn’t ever looked up the troll wall before so I had no idea what I was meant to be seeing.

• Head UP the troll wall. I made some friends on this cruise and they told me that they had been UP the troll wall and had amazing views from up there. If I went again I would pick a tour that took you to the top of the wall whereas ours just took us to the bottom where we stared up at the clouds.

• Eat as much food as you can on the ship so that you don’t have to eat in port… Norway is really expensive and I have no interest in paying for food when I have an unlimited supply on the ship! Make sure you eat a big breakfast and you’ll be fine for a while. If you have kids though it may be worth bringing some snacks.

My cruise onboard Britannia

Port Flam cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Flam, Norway. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.

Flam is a small port village (population under 500) located in Flamsdalen, at the inner end of Aurlandsfjorden, a branch of Sognefjorden. It is situated in Aurland municipality, Sogn og Fjordane county, Norway.

Flam Church was built in 1670. The construction of Flam Line was financed by parliament in 1923. The decision to build the line was made in 1908. In 1942 ordinary operation of trains started on Flam Line. Cruise ships stayed on the fjord in the 1960s. The "new pier" was referred to in a Norwegian Government-issued document from 2000. The closest airport is Sogndal Airport, Haukasen, located approx 70 km (43 mi) from the cruise port. E16 highway from Oslo to Bergen runs through Flam. The route is approx 7 km (4,3 mi) southwest of Aurlandsvangen's downtown, 12 km (7,5 mi) south of Undredal, and 15 km (9,3 mi) east of Gudvangen (through Gudvanga Tunnel).

Flam has been a tourist destination since late-19th-century. Today it receives nearly 450,000 visitors per year. Most tourists ride the 20-km (12-mi) long Flam Line between (linking with Myrdal) ranked one of world's steepest railway tracks (at 1 in 18). There are a few spirals, as well. The former rail station building currently houses a museum dedicated to the railway (Flamsbana).

Among the newest cruise tourist attractions is the fully electric tour boat (launched in 2018) MS Future of the Fjords - LOA length 42 m (138 ft), with floor-ceiling windows and outdoor slanted promenades accessing all decks. The other large tour boat (hybrid vessel (Vision of the Fjords) is a hybrid ferry (running on LNG and MGO).

Main cruising season runs March through October. The harbor receives around 160 cruise ship calls per year. In recent years, cruise port's constant growth made it a year-round destination. In 2018, it scheduled 153 ship calls and ~250,000 passengers. For season 2019 were scheduled 159 ship calls (from the initially booked 176 berthings. SInce 2018, Port Flam limits cruise passengers' capacity to max 5,000 (in port at once).

In early-July 2020, ENOVA (2001-founded, Norwegian Government enterprise) granted to Port Flam NOK 27 million (EUR 2,53 million / USD 2,8 million) for building a shoreside power capability for passenger ships ( ferries and cruise vessels). The project includes laying of an underwater cable from Aurland Power Station (hydroelectric power station owned by E-CO Energi) directly to Flam. Project's total cost is NOK 83 million (EUR 7,77 M / USD 12,5 M). Shore-power supply allows docked ships to turn off their engines (while berthed), thus reducing Port Flam's emissions from passenger ships by 75%.

Large cruise ships to Flam dock on a wharf in the harbor area. The wharf is located at short walking distance from the port. Before the year 2000 (when the "cruise pier" was inaugurated), cruise vessels used to stay anchored on the fjord without reaching the port.

Occasionally, passengers are transported to the railway station via the ship's tender boats.

The port plans a cruise pier expansion (up to 160 m / 525 ft) and building new bollard (short post for mooring lines).

The Flam Line (Flamsbana) is a scenic railroad between Flam and Myrdal. The line is a branch of the Bergen Line (Bergensbanen), runs through the Flamsdalen valley and connects the mainline with Sognefjorden.

• The line has 1 bridge, 20 tunnels and 10 stations.
• The railroad's length is 20 km (13 ml), its elevation difference 863 m (2831 ft) and the max slope is 5,5%. The steep incline (1 to 18, fjord to mountaintop) and the amazing views of the passing unique countryside make the Flam Line Norway's 3rd most visited by tourists attraction.
• Flam Line's departures are 10 per day during high tourist season (May through September) and 5 per day during the rest of the year.

There Could Be A Stop To Popular Fjord Cruises in 2026

The Norwegian government made a decision to put a ban on any cruise ship that would pollute the fjord waters in all the fjords on the UNESCO World Heritage Site called The West Norwegian Fjords last year.

This decision was made in an attempt to keep the fjords pristine and reduce the natural destruction from these huge cruise ships that polluted the fjords. The huge cruise ships not only pollute the air from their emission, but there’s also a certain pollution to the fjord water .

As you can imagine, this isn’t really something that goes hand in hand with an UNESCO World Heritage Site, so the government took action by implementing a new bill.

So from 2026 and onwards, only zero emission cruise ships can enter the famous fjords like Gairanger fjord or the Flåm fjord!

Both the Flåm fjord and the Geiranger fjord has already opened applications for cruise ships to dock at the harbor in 2026 to 200, but not a single cruse ship has applied .

The reason is actually pretty simple: there are no zero emission cruise ship in this part of the world just yet . The technology to make these things a reality is there, but the cost of building a big, zero emission cruise ship is extremely high!

How this will affect tourists who want to experience the fjords on the UNESCO World Heritage Site

If you dream of going on a cruise ship directly on the most famous Norwegian fjords, then you will probably want to do this before this new law comes into effect in 2026.

While it will still be open for zero emission cruise ships to operate in the fjords, it seems unlikely that many of these will be ready for 2026, and I’m going to guess that if any cruise ships do make this, they will charge a huge premium on it.

That said, there are still many different Norwegian fjords that are not on the UNESCO World Heritage Site list. You can still go on a fjord cruise to other fjords in Norway, and all the major cruise lines will simply change their itineraries to stay away from the fjords where they cannot go.

So cruising in the Norwegian fjords will still be an option, but regular cruise ships will not be able to enter the most popular and amazing fjords.

How this will affect towns like Flåm

The harbor master at Flåm harbor tells NRK that cruise tourists spend around 200 – 250 million Norwegian kroner ($20 – $25 million USD) every single year in Flåm alone, and it’s impossible for local businesses to find a solution to get in this money from other sources.

Many people fear that this could devastate the local economy and bankrupt many of the local businesses that have tourists as a main source of income.

Flåm is still popular for tourists who arrive by the famous Flåmsbanen, but these only account for a small chunk of the total tourism in the town.

I kind of get it, I really do, but the local community will be devastated, we have been twice to the fjords, and it is beautiful, but there hypocritical when whaling destroys Marne life ten fold, but they don’t mind doing that every year , honestly it makes me laugh , on the one hand, it’s Ban ban ban, on the other they’ll be begging for them to rtn, as the local community will not survive a few coach trips dropping in and out,with 70- 100 people at a time, the ships bring thousands of people, cut it down maybe , but ban! Get real

Yes, this will be absolutely devastating for the local communities.

I don’t really understand your argument about whaling though. Do you mean that the Norwegian government should not care about pollution, because of the fact that they are allowing whaling? I don’t see why one crime against the ocean should make room for making another one.

Most Hurtigruten ships are older cruise ferries, with a few newer expedition ships added to the fleet. All ships prioritize functionality and comfort over amenities. Regardless of the age of the ship, there is no onboard entertainment in the traditional cruising sense.

Instead, the entertainment is the Norwegian coastline, wildlife, and some limited enrichment activities, such as lectures and occasional guided tours, depending on the itinerary.

Excellent food is a feature across the fleet, with an emphasis on local and sustainable ingredients. Fish and seafood feature strongly on the dinner menus, while lavish breakfast and lunch buffet meals ensure passengers never go hungry.

Norway’s Historic Coastal Route

Although the line has diversified since losing the exclusive rights to operate the route, Norway’s historic coastal ferry route remains the backbone of Hurtigruten's offering.

Daily departures from Bergen continue. Hurtigruten operates departures on seven of 11 days, with Havila Voyages operating the other four.

This route has been operating since 1893, serving as a lifeline for Norway’s remote, coastal communities. Today, the journey stretches from Bergen in the southwest to Kirkenes in the northeast, covering over 2,500 miles.

Passengers can embark on a full 11-night round trip from Bergen, take a one-way voyage, or do as the locals do and use the service as a ferry for shorter segments.

Regardless of the option you pick, this route offers a thoroughly enjoyable blend of scenic beauty and cultural experiences. Passengers will see dramatic fjords, charming coastal towns, and the northern lights in the winter or the midnight sun in the summer.

Multiple daily port calls allow for excursions and exploration in some ports, but many are short stops designed simply for the loading and unloading of cargo and local passengers.

Hurtigruten’s New Signature Voyages

To mark the 130th anniversary of the coastal route and make more use of MS Trollfjord , Hurtigruten introduced two unique itineraries called the Svalbard Express and North Cape Express.

The passenger-only voyages proved popular, so Hurtigruten recently made them a permanent addition to its program , with departures available from Bergen and Oslo.

Now named ‘Signature Voyages’, the renamed Svalbard Line (summer) and North Cape Line (winter) offer unique itineraries with longer port stays, no local ferry service, all-inclusive Nordic cuisine, personalized guiding, and enrichment activities.

The experience is arguably better for experienced cruisers than the coastal route, with fewer, longer port calls, and a more cruise-like experience, despite still lacking the entertainment of traditional cruise lines.

Now known as HX , Hurtigruten Expeditions offers expedition cruises across the world, but also in its home waters of Norway.

These cruises are designed for those who want to explore remote and less-visited areas of Norway, often beyond the Arctic Circle. Expedition cruises are conducted on smaller, specialized ships equipped for polar waters and include a range of activities such as kayaking, hiking, and wildlife spotting.

Passengers are accompanied by expert guides and scientists, who provide insights into the natural environment and local culture. These cruises retain the core of the Hurtigruten experience but offer a more rugged and hands-on approach to exploring Norway’s wilderness.

Available HX expedition cruises to Norway include exploring the Arctic winter aboard MS Spitsbergen or circumnavigations of Svalbard aboard MS Fram .

Booking Tips For Hurtigruten Cruises In Norway

Although Hurtigruten trips are a bucket list item for many travelers, research should be done in advance of booking to fully understand the ships, travel concept, and other factors that may impact enjoyment. That’s especially true for someone used to traditional cruising.

Hurtigruten’s smaller ships mean that guests will feel the movement of the ocean more. On the coastal route, certain stretches such as rounding Norway’s West Cape and crossing Vestfjorden towards Lofoten are renowned for their rough seas, especially when sailing outside of the summer season.

Hurtigruten fares are also higher than guests may expect, especially on the coastal route.

Part of the reason for this is the coastal route ships are subject to local laws and must use Norwegian-speaking crew primarily for safety reasons. This requires the payment of relatively high salaries and imposing high taxes on alcohol, among other factors, that keep prices higher than some alternative travel options.

Despite the high prices, there’s a lot to love about the Hurtigruten experience in Norway, which keeps many travelers coming back year after year.

The line's wide selection of cruisetours includes independent adventures and off-the-beaten-path destinations, like Wrangell-St. Elias National Park & Preserve, the largest national park in the U.S. For travelers seeking the highest level of service and the most time on land, the Connoisseur cruisetour is a good option, including up to 10 nights ashore following the seven-day Voyage of the Glaciers cruise. The Connoisseur trip is hosted by a tour director and includes select sightseeing outings and most meals in the fare.

Princess' special programming, North to Alaska, offers guests unique insights into the history and culture of the region with visits from local Alaskans, photography sessions, demonstrations on lumberjacking and excursions like Cook My Catch, where guests will go fishing (with a guide), then bring their fish back for chefs to prepare for dinner at one of the designated Princess lodges.

There are two new Princess cruisetours to consider for 2024. The 15-night National Parks Tour includes a seven-day cruise, visits to five national parks, scenic rail travel and a total of eight evenings across four Princess wilderness lodges. Norwegian Cruise Line has one of the longest seasons in Alaska, extending from April through October. The line operates two of its larger ships in Alaska: Norwegian Bliss and Norwegian Encore. These ships feature a plethora of onboard activities to keep kids and adults entertained, like racetracks, laser tag, mini-golf, complimentary kids and teen clubs, video arcades, themed parties, live performances and more. Families will also enjoy entertainment by Nickelodeon, character breakfasts, salmon bakes and sessions with a park ranger who comes on board to narrate the Glacier Bay passage. You'll find many spacious room options on board perfectly suited to larger families – especially in The Haven, the line's exclusive ship-within-a-ship concept. In addition, Norwegian Cruise Line offers select cruise deals where third and fourth guests sail free .

There are two new Alaska shore excursions for 2024: the Mendenhall Glacier Canoe Paddle & Trek and the Fly-In Norris Glacier Hike and Packraft. The first outing takes place in Juneau , where you'll paddle a 12-person canoe across Mendenhall Lake to reach the towering glacier. Prepare to be surrounded by the spectacular setting of Tongass National Park, a 400-foot waterfall and an Arctic tern nesting ground. The second excursion, also in Juneau, takes participants on a flight into the Alaska wilderness via floatplane; you'll then paddle across a pristine glacial lake and hike the surface of Norris Glacier. Unforgettable sights along the way include densely forested mountains; the mouth of the Taku Inlet, a waterway that offers access to Juneau Icefield; and plenty of wildlife, including sea lions and bald eagles.

Also new for 2024 is the option to take the Denali Talkeetna Explorer tour after your cruise. (This cruisetour previously only took place prior to the voyage.) The 13-day sea and land package, Denali Talkeetna Explorer – Northbound Cruisetour, is available on three dates in 2024 in combination with a Norwegian Jewel sailing. The package includes a seven-night cruise; a total of six nights in Fairbanks, Denali and Talkeetna; a stop at the Trans-Alaska Oil Pipeline; a riverboat cruise in Fairbanks; a visit to an Iditarod dog musher's kennel; a deluxe glass-domed Alaska Railroad journey between Fairbanks and Denali; and more. You'll also have free time to book optional shore excursions like whitewater rafting, park tours, helicopter flightseeing and other outdoor adventures.

Insider tip: If you're sailing on Norwegian Bliss or Norwegian Encore, be sure to grab a front-row seat in the Observation Lounge when sailing in Glacier Bay Park & Preserve. Royal Caribbean International offers seven-night cruise-only Alaska options (some featuring the Inside Passage) and extended cruisetours (lasting nine to 13 days) with land portions before or after the voyage. Cruisetours may visit Denali National Park & Preserve, among other highlights. The line also offers select "kids sail free" itineraries, which will appeal to families.

If you want nonstop entertainment while on board, choose one of Royal Caribbean International 's two larger Quantum Class vessels: Quantum of the Seas or Ovation of the Seas. Both megaships accommodate approximately 4,900 passengers. If you prefer a smaller ship, consider booking one of the Radiance Class vessels, which hold a maximum of around 2,500 guests.

Quantum Class ships have multiple outdoor attractions that provide panoramic views of the scenery. For example, the surf simulator, FlowRider, affords views of magnificent snow-capped mountains and glaciers all around the ship. If you're adept at rock climbing, this is another chance for optimal scenic viewing – at 40 feet above the deck. Additional entertainment includes free-fall skydiving at RipCord by iFly, outdoor movie nights, live performances and musical entertainment, bumper cars, an escape room, a sports court and indoor pools for those cool Alaska summer days.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises ' all-inclusive fares include free unlimited shore excursions (though select tours come with a fee); complimentary fine wines and spirits; dining at specialty restaurants; 24-hour room service; unlimited Wi-Fi access; prepaid gratuities; free valet laundry service; and more. Complimentary shore excursions are available in a number of Alaska ports. UnCruise's expedition-style small ships call on ports and remote areas in Alaska that larger ships can't access, taking guests to locales that the line coins, "UnAlaska." The five ships operating in The Great Land accommodate between 22 passengers (Safari Quest) and 86 guests (Wilderness Legacy), and there are seven-, 12- and 14-night itineraries to choose from. You can also book optional land tours, including a Denali & Talkeetna Wilderness Rail Adventure. For a once-in-a-lifetime trip, book the 14-night Alaska's Fjords & Glaciers Bay Adventure Cruise on Wilderness Discoverer, a 76-passenger ship. Landslide tsunamis give cruise ships just minutes to prepare

L andslide-generated tsunamis don’t come with any warning signs and they’re impossible to predict. Tsunami scientists are meeting with vessel operators in Alaska this month to put together some practical guidelines for captains to use in the case they encounter one of these snap tsunamis. These recommendations will be useful for the hundreds of tour ships that navigate the large landslide-prone coastlines of Alaska, Greenland, Chile, Norway, and New Zealand. Hopefully this summit will help prepare ships , and save lives in the process. A tsunami hasn’t killed any boat passengers in Alaska in 60 years, but as ice mass continues to dwindle in the face of a warming climate, the probability of a big event increases .

Geologist Bretwood Higman recently spoke with the Atlantic for this piece regarding a potential epidemic of landslide-triggered tsunamis. He knows of dozens of unstable slopes with millions of cubic feet of rock ready to push into a bay or fjord. Any of these tourist ships caught in the area at the wrong time would be helpless to capsize. It would be a freak accident, to be sure, but a potentially devastating and deadly event that bears thought.

“I do think that, at some point, [the situation] is going to explode,” says Higman.

In 2015 the Taan Fjord saw a 2.6 billion cubic feet of rocky land slide into the water in an instant. This sparked a 650-foot tall wave to roar out of the fjord and into Icy Bay. As the water became deeper the wave gathered speed, pushing faster and faster out of the bay and into open ocean. Thankfully no boats were in the bay at the time of the massive wave, but boats do visit semi-regularly.

The National Park Service is particularly concerned with large cruise lines entering Glacier Bay. An average of two ships traverse the bay every day during the height of tourism season, and there are as many as a dozen large slabs of land poised to slide into the water at any given time. If one of those lets go at the wrong time, thousands of people could lose their lives.

Right now the best advice for tsunami avoidance on a ship is to either run the ship aground and hope for the best, or head for deeper ocean and hope for the best. Both of those pieces of advice are based around deepwater earthquake-triggered tsunamis, which typically provide ship captains lots of advance warning. If you have mere minutes to attempt getting out of an Alaskan bay, you don’t have time to second guess yourself. That’s why the summit is so important, providing best practices for ships in the case of one of these freak accidents.
