Follow on facebook:, tractive offering x-treme pro ‘long-travel’ suspension for tenere 700, a top-of-the-line suspension kit for those that want next-level off-road performance..

extreme suspension travel

Since its release in 2019 in Europe and the arrival in the US in 2021, there’s no question the Yamaha Tenere 700 has become one of the most popular and sought out adventure bikes on the market. With its rally-inspired design, it hits a sweet spot in power, performance, simplicity, and price that’s hard to beat. But despite all the high points, a top drawback often reported by owners is its suspension.

While the stock KYB suspension is decently capable out of the box for average trails, it has its limits in technical off-road terrain, especially in the hands of a skilled rider. Soft springs and limited travel of 8.3 inches (210mm) in front and 7.9 inches (200mm) in the rear mean you’re likely to start bottoming out on the larger bumps at faster speeds, which gets worse when loaded up for travel. The stock damping adjusters can take you only so far in tuning out negative characteristics and the limited ground clearance leads to early skid plate scraping in rough terrain.

TracTive Launches X-treme Pro long-travel suspension for Tenere 700

Compared to other off road-focused adventure bikes in the class like the KTM 890 Adventure R, Tuareg 660 and Tiger 900 Rally Pro, it’s down about an inch on the suspension travel specs. Even a casual off-roader like the V-Strom 800DE offers more.

Few Adventure Bikes seem more deserving of a suspension upgrade than the T7 and we’ve all seen the upper end of the model’s potential on full display in the talented hands of Pol Tarres, who uses TracTive suspension components on his custom-built bikes .

For those owners who want to unleash their own potential on the trail, TracTive Suspension has the killer T7 mod in the form of the X-Treme Pro (+25mm) Long Travel kit . The kit not only increases suspension travel and ground clearance by roughly an inch front and rear, but also upgrades the quality of the suspension with race-level componentry for improved stability, control and confidence on the trail.

Front Suspension Upgrade

Tenere 700 Suspension Upgrade

Ever felt your T7 fork clunk on a big rock or deep rut? That’s exactly what the TracTive front suspension upgrade is designed to fix. The X-Treme Pro (+25mm) Long Travel front cartridge kit is a drop-in upgrade to the existing 43mm Tenere 700 fork that doesn’t require any special mods to install. Not only does it increase suspension travel on the fork to 9.3 inches, it also offers rebound damping on one leg and compression on the other with convenient hand-adjustable dials right on top. No more getting down under the bike with a screwdriver to change compression damping settings at the bottom of the fork. The fork kit also adds preload adjustment to the front, which is useful in setting up the optimal attitude of the bike.

TracTive Launches X-treme Pro long-travel suspension for Tenere 700

The TracTive Tenere 700 fork kit utilizes an advanced closed-cartridge system that separates the oil from the air in a closed chamber pressurized with nitrogen gas. With the oil under pressure, it won’t foam or cavitate when heat builds up during aggressive riding like it can with a standard open-cartridge fork. Air bubbling in your fork oil causes a reduction in damping performance and doesn’t keep the internals well lubricated either. The main benefit is smooth and consistent performance that won’t taper off, along with more-precise damping adjustments.

Damping and bump absorption is further improved with the use of a large 35mm cartridge piston, one of the biggest among aftermarket suspension suppliers. This big piston facilitates high oil flow transfer during compression and rebound for maximum damping control — the more oil you can transfer, the more you can slow down fork movement. And when you’re really getting down to the end of your suspension travel during a big impact, there’s a hydraulic end stop waiting in reserve to help prevent any hard bottoming. (MSRP: $1,695)

Rear Suspension Upgrade

Tenere 700 Suspension Upgrade

Just getting the stock Tenere 700 airborne a few inches off the ground can sometimes lead to bottoming out the rear suspension, especially if you’re a rider in the 200+ pound range. To combat this, TracTive swaps the stock shock for a much beefier unit that features a CNC-machined 6082 T6 aluminum housing with a hardened 42CRMo4 piston rod attached to a stout 46mm damping piston, along with high-strength bearings and stainless-steel bushings.

Like the fork kit the TracTive X-Treme Pro (+25mm) Long Travel rear shock increases the travel of the suspension, raising it to 8.9 inches in the rear. Damping is provided through high-flow oil channels, low-friction seals, an off-road specific shim stack, and an external reservoir containing significantly more oil and cooling surface than the stock shock. This ensures predictable, stable, fade-free performance in the rough stuff.

TracTive Launches X-treme Pro long-travel suspension for Tenere 700

In addition to rebound damping adjustability, the shock features separate high- and low-speed compression damping adjusters to provide more precise tuning of the rear suspension’s behavior for both quick hits and slower undulations on the trail. All damping adjustments are performed using convenient clickers for quick changes on the fly, instead of tools like the stocker. The preload adjuster also has a greater range of adjustment to support higher loads that may occur during travel, especially two-up. In addition, the shock can be purchased with or without a hydraulic ‘hand dial’ preload adjuster (HPA) that enables quick and easy preload adjustments for varying loads without tools.

Tenere 700 Suspension Upgrade

If the longer travel and more-effective damping aren’t enough to counter a particularly big hit, the TracTive X-Treme Pro shock is equipped with a Position Dependent Damping System (PDSII) as a final defense against hard bottoming. The PDSII is a secondary damping piston mounted on top of the main damping piston. When a big hit occurs, this second damping piston enters a cup at the end of the compression stroke that creates an additional damping force. It’s like a high-tech bump stop that effectively absorbs and dissipates energy in the final phase of compression, when needed. Minimizing the number of big impacts during long off-road rides not only improves comfort and safety but also reduces wear and tear on the bike and body. (MSRP: $1,395)

Custom-Tuned Suspension

While the installation of both the fork kit and replacement shock can be done by anyone with basic mechanical skills, the technical fine-tuning work is performed at the suspension shop. Upon purchase, you’ll fill out a form that details exactly how your suspension gets configured before your products are shipped out. Both the X-Treme Pro fork kit and replacement shock get custom springs and application-specific tuning based on the rider’s weight and intended usage, whether your focus is racing, overlanding, two-up touring, or technical trail exploring.

If you’re not the long-legged type and want to keep the stock T7 ride height, you can also opt for the standard height X-Treme Pro fork and shock upgrade kit instead of the ‘Long Travel’ option. You still get all the benefits of a premium aftermarket suspension with technology on par with what top-level racers are using, like the improved damping performance and hard bottoming resistance. TracTive also has a low suspension X-Treme fork and shock kit that reduces suspension travel by about 0.8 inches (-20mm) for those that want to drop the seat height even more.

Tenere 700 Suspension Upgrade

All TracTive products are fully serviceable and include a 2-year warranty. Pricing for the X-Treme Pro Long Travel shock starts at $1,395 and $1,695 for the fork kit. Not a bad investment considering that after upgrading a new Tenere 700 you’d still have a few thousand dollars in your pocket for additional mods when compared to purchasing a KTM 890 Adventure R, as well as a roughly 15-pound lighter machine with higher-spec suspension.

So if you are looking to upgrade your beloved T7 with the suspension Yamaha should have put on it from the factory (even better in fact), TracTive’s X-Treme Pro kits are definitely worth a look. The kit is also a compatible upgrade for the Tenere 700 World Raid and Extreme models for those who live overseas. Check out the TracTive website where you can see the range of options for the Tenere 700 and search local suspension shops that carry their products.

Talk me out of (or into) TT Long travel kit for new 1290 SAR? (Suspension options)

Discussion in ' Hard. Core. (1090/1190/1290) ' started by jacoba331 , Jun 9, 2023 .

So I received confirmation today that touratech branded “long travel extreme suspension” for the 1090/1190/1290 does in fact fit the new 1290 SAR (mine is a 2022). (EDIT: It does not, in fact, fit....) In the past- I have put the “extreme” suspension on my old BMW and the difference was incredible. (Stock beemer shocks blow). I would like this kit because adding 30mm of travel is pretty sick. Along with proper sling rates, it sounds great. However, the new WP suspension on these new models is touted to be damn good and I agree- it’s pretty good, but I crave the extra travel. 1) Has anyone installed this kit on their big KTM? Feedback? If it raises both ends by 30mm sounds like geometry won’t be affected horribly, Don’t seem to see much info out there on this kit. 2) Are the internals of this kit actually “better” than the WP setup the new 1290s have? 3) If I decide to be reasonable and just get proper springs, where can I get them- I am not finding any obvious sources for springs out there to buy for my bike/weight (220lb naked+ gear and luggage).

Quite a few of us have played with suspension on the earlier models SAR, SAS and SAT quite successfully. Best place for springs are Cannon Racecraft. All made to measure, what ever rate you need.

Or talk to George ( @Torque ) from Suspension 101. He did an amazing job on the forks and shock for my 2020 SAR.

If you are looking to do the work yourself, Cannon can make any spring you might want. All they need are the dimensions of the spring and the rate you want. However if you want help with tuning your suspension, then George is your man.
Great intel, thanks everyone will reach out to George too.

Springs are in stock for your bike, custom made to our spec from Cannon. We carry other manufacturers springs KYB, Showa, and others. Depending on the application and what they have on the shelf. Cannon hand winds their springs so for high quantity purchases of a single spring 100 of each rate and size we go to a company that has the CNC machines. But sometimes we will order 100 springs from cannon of varied specs. They are good people.

bigjohnintexas Here we go again...

Just my 2 cents....you can't modify the stock suspension to beat a premium aftermarket long travel. I had a 2016 1190R that I had re-valved and re-sprung for my weight. It was a capable machine, taking me up Flag Mountain in Taylor Park, Mt. Antero, and quite a few other places that are challenging for a bike that large. However, traction in the really chunky stuff was lacking, and jumping it always felt harsh. Then I bought 2014 1190R from Powercell with their Ohilns long travel suspension. I had two nearly identical bikes at the same time (I turned the 2016 into a commuter) and back to back there was no comparison. Where I felt pretty good on gnarly stuff on the 2016, I can flat out rip on the '14 long travel. I ride single track in the national forest and can double the whoops, traction is sooooo much better on the really rough stuff, and the bike is much more settled and plush all the way around. The negatives I see are that the bike is already tall, and this makes it over an inch taller. For me that's not an issue, but something to consider if under 6'. Also, on the '14-'20 11X0 bikes, you need to do a cat delete for travel clearance. Not an issue where I live and maybe not necessary with the 15mm longer swingarm on the '21-'23. And of course, price is considerable. Will you really use it? Also, you'll have to extend the side stand and centerstand. For me, it checked all of the boxes and I couldn't be happier, hence the reason I'll continue to rock this bike for many more years instead of upgrading to a newer bike. After all, it's far less of an upgrade when your bike works as well or better than the new ones. So, if you will use the capabilities of the longer suspension, can afford it, plan on keeping the bike, and the extra height isn't an issue, you will probably be amazed at the transformation. FYI- before I bought Ken's PowerCell bike, I was going to purchase the TT Extreme myself. All of the research I did showed that was probably the best drop-in option, and if you will sell your bike someday you can go back to factory with the TT, however, I would give Powercell a shout and see if they can modify yours because the Ohiln's is simply amazing. Good luck!

Sent you a message on your 101 site @Torque digging into this 3rd option now of an overhaul instead of a drop in kit v springs. exciting!
Alright. So I dug deeper with Touratech and they realized their long travel kit does not fit the new 1290s after recent feedback from a customer. (Also- all Touratech branded suspensions are Tractive kits with touratech colors and stickers imported from the fatherland at a STEEP up-charge fyi). I spoke to George at 101 and was leaning going toward his custom job. (No doubt a great product and service). I decided to dig deeper and spoke to good ol’ Ted porter at the beemer shop who is the exclusive tractive importer for N America to see if he could reach out to his folks to get a straight answer on tractive options for the 2022+ USA models. Tractive just released cartridges and extreme shocks for the newest model (which are not the same as the old model). They even had a +20mm kit in their newest catalogue! BOOM! So I ordered Tractive (+20mm) front and rears for the beast. I believe I am the first in the USA to go this route. Ted is getting his people to update his website accordingly for these new parts. I went with the Tractive combo because I like the idea of putting my stock suspension back on the bike when I sell or trade it in, then I can sell the Tractive kit for an extra cash infusion down the road. Very excited. Will report back! Probably should have just got an 890 for the 240mm of suspension travel but whatever- I’m an idiot- and 1290s are for idiots!
Good luck to you. The Beemer Shop has given us better service than most, and are very knowledgeable.

The ultimate suspension now available in a long-travel version that adds 20mm front and rear travel for the Honda Africa Twin CRF1100L.

The Touratech guys have been riding the Africa Twin since it first came out in 2016. Much of their seat time on this bike has been pushing the limits off-road, including riding the various Backcountry Discovery Routes & scouting for the Touratech Rally. We love riding this bike, but not with the OEM suspension. Our primary question when advising a customer is which suspension option is best for their situation. If they have the inseam to spare, or posses the riding skills to not worry about inseam, then our top choice for a suspension upgrade for the Africa Twin is the long-travel system.

Ever wonder why trophy trucks have three feet of travel on their suspension? It’s because the more travel your suspension has, the better job it can do smoothing out the bumps in the road to keep your bike under control and tires planted to the ground. Customers dreaming of taking the Africa Twin suspension to the next level have been asking for a long-travel solution. This kti raises the standard model bikes to Adventure Sports ride height.

Here is how we do it:

Long-Travel Fork Cartridge System  – This system replaces your stock internals with a closed cartridge system that completely transforms the front-end of the Africa Twin with high performance characteristics that can’t be achieved with OEM forks. When the road gets rough you’ll have 10% more travel to absorb impacts and maximize traction, control, and boost that feeling of confidence. The Long-Travel cartridge raises the front of the bike putting more distance (20mm) between your skid plate and the terrain hazards below.

No modifications to the fork tubes, fork brace or brake system are necessary and a state-of-the-art bladder system is used instead of a floating piston. A closed cartridge separates the nitrogen and high-performance damping oil from the moving parts of the forks for smooth and consistent performance even in punishing environments. The system includes hydraulic bottoming prevention that works like a pillow to prevent the fork from bottoming out suddenly.

Compression damping, rebound and pre-load adjustments are located on top of the forks allowing riders to make changes easily. Spring weights are selected to match rider weight, load and riding preferences to maximize performance of your Africa Twin.

If you like to ride with confidence in any terrain, upgrading to the Long-travel Cartridge System provides the rider with the best possible performance. The valving is set-up to be the perfect match to the Touratech Suspension Long-Travel Extreme Shock.

Long-Travel Extreme Shock  – You will have an additional 20mm (.8 inch) of travel for your Africa Twin and valving that is suitable for faster speeds and off-road terrain. At the end of the travel you still have the PDS bottoming control works like a hydraulic pillow at the end of the stroke. It also extends the life of the shock and is better for the motorcycle and the rider by eliminating the forces and possible damage associated with hard hits.

The Touratech Extreme Shock offers adjustable high-speed and low-speed compression damping, a remote fluid reservoir, high-flow fittings, adjustable rebound damping, floating piston superiority and low-friction seals which add up to a highly refined shock that can be tuned with precision to meet the ride style and handling characteristics you prefer on your Africa Twin. The shock also has a hydraulic pre-load adjuster, so you can quickly set your Africa Twin's preload when the load on the motorcycle changes.

The Touratech Extreme Shock is over-built by design with heavy-duty materials and over-sized components.

Touratech Suspension is the world’s first purpose-built shock absorber for long-distance touring with a fully-loaded motorcycle. Right out of the box, it has the strength, features and adjustments to go the distance on an adventure or touring bike carrying luggage.

The Touratech Extreme Shock is the ultimate in suspension technology, and the ideal choice for extended trips or off-road rides like a Backcountry Discovery Route. For the rider who wants absolute control over suspension set-up and high performance, this is the product.

This upgrade also increases the ground clearance by 20mm making it easier to clean terrain. If you want the best suspension on the planet for your Honda Africa Twin, the Long-travel Touratech Extreme shock matched up with the Long Travel Fork Cartridge will provide unmatched fun no matter what terrain you tackle.

New Cognito Suspension Package and Spring Kits for ’16-’21 Yamaha YXZ1000R

Michelle Marus

Cognito Motorsports was founded by Justin Lambert in 2001, just operating out of a converted chicken coop in Arroyo Grande, California. Now, two decades later, Cognito has become an industry leader in the design, development, and manufacturing of high-quality, proprietary suspension, steering, and chassis components for several popular trucks, SUVs, and UTVs. Justin’s passion for off-road racing paired with the rising popularity of UTVs inspired him to begin developing a comprehensive line of suspension upgrades for Can-Am, Polaris, and Yamaha. With proven performance and durability in the most extreme conditions, including under the pressures of competition, Cognito Motorsports has quickly become the leader in UTV aftermarket products for those looking for the very best.

Cognito Motorsports has just announced the release of some new suspension parts for the 2016-2021 Yamaha YXZ1000R. The first is the Cognito Long Travel Suspension Package with Demon Axle Assemblies. This is designed to be a complete turn-key long travel suspension system for your Yamaha. It comes complete with all of the components needed to turn an average Yamaha YXZ1000 into a seriously off-road capable machine. This package has been rigorously tested for thousands of desert race miles to ensure long-term durability and optimal performance. From the deserts of Baja to the dunes, the Cognito long travel suspension package will take your driving experience to the next level.

With this package, suspension travel is increased to 19 inches, while increasing ground clearance at full bump. In stock form, the YXZ1000 has zero ground clearance at full bump, making the chassis prone to contacting the ground when the suspension is fully compressed. If you are looking for the very best long travel suspension system for your UTV, this is the one. Manufactured right here in the USA in Central Valley, California, this package will get you there with the reliability and safety you deserve.

Off Road Suspension: Stock Width, Mid-Travel, and Long Travel Explained

  • October 26, 2022

extreme suspension travel

In the off-road world suspension terms like stock width, mid-travel, and long travel are thrown around without explanation. But what do they mean and how do they affect vehicle handling? In this article we will take a quick look at a few of our different truck & SUV suspension lift upgrades and explain how much lift and wheel travel you can expect to gain from the different systems that we offer.

stock width toyota suspension uniball upper control arm old man emu lift kit

STOCK WIDTH SUSPENSION

Entry level stock width suspension systems replace the OEM components without changing any of the factory geometry. Track width, or how wide the vehicle is from hub to hub, remains the same as it was from the factory. Stock width setups consist of basic shock & spring lift kit such as Bilstein 5100 , Old Man Emu , or Dobinsons . With these configurations the front end is lifted anywhere from 1”-3” and you’ll have the same amount of travel as the stock vehicle. The down side to these is often times a stiffer, more harsh ride. When you lift it closer to 3” you’re maxing out the stock ball joint angle and accelerating wear.

It is important to upgrade upper control arms even on the more entry level lift kits. When you lift a vehicle you lose caster in the front end which negatively affects handling. TC stock width upper control arms are designed to add a few degrees of caster back into the front end which helps improve steering feel and makes alignment easier. The 1″ stainless steel uniball is tougher and offers greater articulation over a ball joint. If the basic stock width setup isn’t quite enough, upgrading to a mid-travel system might be necessary.

MID-TRAVEL SUSPENSION

Performance mid-travel setups consist of stock width uniball upper and lower control arms paired with with extended travel adjustable coilovers from manufacturers like King , Fox , and Radflo . These extended travel coilovers are designed to maximize wheel travel without binding the inner CV’s and outer tie-rods. With an adjustable threaded shock body, they provide anywhere from 1” to 3” of vehicle lift and cycle 8” of wheel travel plus an additional 1” of droop or down travel.

Vehicle track width will remain the same as stock since the upper and lower control arms are stock width. A mid-travel setup can be extremely effective on the trails. Ride quality is enhanced along with the occupant’s comfort and trail driving fatigue is reduced. The benefit of installing a TC mid-travel setup is significant performance gains and added component durability without having to worry about installing fiberglass fenders. Stock length UCA kits are designed not to be too wide for tighter trails in dense wooded areas often found on the east coast or in the PNW.

To maximize your mid-travel set up you can install a 3.0” coilover or add a secondary bypass shock with compression and rebound adjustment tubes for maximum dampening control and tunability. To add a secondary shock up front you will need a shock hoop and a lower control arm that is tabbed for a dual shock suspension system. From our experience, upgrading to DuroBump bump stops can further enhance the ride quality and reduce the harsh bottom outs.

  LONG TRAVEL SUSPENSION

Still looking for more performance? A long travel kit might be in your future. Long travel suspension includes upper and lower control arms that are wider than your stock components. These high performance IFS suspension systems are designed to increase the amount of wheel travel that you cycle and ensure that you maintain traction on rougher terrain. Because they are wider than stock, long travel suspension kits offer more articulation when crawling over obstacles and will add stability when cornering at high speed.

TOTAL CHAOS offers long travel kits for most Toyotas from 1986 to present including Tacoma, 4Runner, FJ Cruiser, Tundra, Lexus GX470, and GX460. Our most popular long travel systems are the +2” Expedition Series or +3.5” Race Series. With extended upper and lower control arms you’ll be adding 4″ or 7″ respectively to the overall track width of the vehicle. Both Expedition and Race Series kits offer 3″-4″ of vehicle lift with adjustable long travel specific coilovers. +2″ Expedition Series kits will cycle about 11.5″ of wheel travel while the wider +3.5″ Race Series will cycle about 12.5″.

2nd gen toyota tacoma overland build mountain bike sunset mountains

TC custom long travel shocks are built by each manufacturer to specifically cycle the correct extended and collapsed lengths based on each long travel system and its factory bump stop configuration. Stock width extended travel shocks do not work with a long travel kit. All TC lower control arms are manufactured with dual shock capability for maximum dampening control to tune your vehicle for harsh bottom outs or added aftermarket equipment weight.

long travel toyota tacoma 2 inch expedition series fox shocks coilvers bypass

Extended control arms will require you to increase the length of many of the other parts that are now too short. Additional items that are part of the package include extended tie-rods and extended brake lines. Extended axles will also be required when retaining 4WD (sold separately) and are re-inserted into the factory inner and outer CV’s. Each vehicle platform has wheel travel limitations in the factory steering system and axle assembly and we design our parts to work within the parameters needed to retain many factory Toyota components. Based on our 25 years of experience they last the longest.

Whether it is a stock length, mid-travel, or long travel suspension setup the most important thing is hitting the trail and sharing good times with your friends and family. Learning the capabilities of your rig at all modification levels is important and helps you to appreciate each upgrade you make. More importantly you will build your skill as a driver. Get out there and cause CHAOS. We will see you in the DIRT!

2024 Yamaha Tenere 700 Extreme Totalmotorcycle.com Key Features

Yamaha strengthens its class leading Adventure line-up

Since its launch in 2019, the Ténéré 700 has become one of Yamaha’s best-selling models. Powered by Yamaha’s outstanding 690cc high torque CP2 engine and equipped with a versatile chassis with premium suspension systems, the Ténéré is the most successful bike in its category.

Yamaha is always looking to offer customers a diverse choice to match their different lifestyles and needs. So for 2024, the brand’s class-leading Adventure range will be further strengthened and diversified with the introduction of the Ténéré 700 Extreme.

For class-leading off-road handling with lightweight agility on rough terrain, the Ténéré 700 Extreme features premium fully adjustable KYB suspension systems with 20mm extra travel at the front and rear (compared to the Ténéré 700). For super-smooth front suspension action, the forks are treated with a durable Kashima coating that helps to eliminate stiction at lower speeds – and the gold coloured fork inner tube finish also underlines the bike’s overall feeling of quality.

The fully adjustable KYB suspension can be set up to work effectively with a variety of rider physiques and different riding styles, making the Ténéré 700 Extreme a serious hardcore performer. Aimed at riders with motocross or enduro experience who want added performance for the most challenging off-road terrain, this latest Ténéré adds an exciting new dimension to the Adventure category.

Factory-equipped with lightweight titanium footrests, as well as an aluminum radiator protector and chain guide, this high specification Adventure bike is ready to prove itself in a wide range of extreme conditions. Its two-piece front fender assembly consists of a colour matched high level enduro-style fender and a separate lower section to protect from dirt and debris – while a flatter one-piece rally seat enables quick and easy bodyweight shifting.

Its vertical 5-inch TFT meter features 3 separate themes, including a Rally Raid roadbook-style display for effective navigation in the back of beyond. Other exclusive features on this exciting new addition to the Ténéré family include lightweight competition type titanium footrests with 35% greater surface area for reduced pressure on boot soles – and to handle the most inhospitable surfaces the bike’s ground clearance is increased to 260mm.

Race-proven performance and class-leading durability

The Ténéré’s outstanding off road performance has been highlighted by Yamaha factory riders Alessandro Botturi and Pol Tarrés who have victoriously ridden their bikes in the world’s toughest Rally Races.

After creating history at the TransAnatolia rally raid with an epic 1-2 podium, Tarrés and Botturi will debut the 2024 Ténéré 700 Extreme at the last stage of the Italian Motorally Raid TT championship taking place in Olbia from 20th October.

With its premium long travel KYB suspension, high quality chassis components and upgraded TFT meter, the Ténéré 700 Extreme is a remarkably capable machine that can take adventurous riders into the wilderness and further to the Next Horizon.

  • KYB Fully adjustable front fork
  • 230 MM Front travel
  • 220 MM Rear travel
  • 260 MM Min. ground clearance

Fully adjustable 43mm KYB front forks

The Ténéré 700 Extreme features high specification long-travel KYB front forks giving 230mm of wheel travel (20mm more than the Ténéré 700) that can handle the toughest off-road terrain. A durable Kashima coating on the tubes ensures smooth suspension action – and with full adjustability for preload and compression/rebound damping, this tough off roader can be set up to perfectly match your riding style on any terrain.

KYB piggyback rear shock absorber

Ténéré 700 Extreme is equipped with a long stroke KYB rear shock that gives 220mm of rear wheel travel – 20mm more than the Ténéré 700. The race developed fully adjustable Monocross rear suspension is fitted with a newly developed linkage that gives more progressive suspension action for improved handling performance in extreme off-road terrain.

3-theme connected 5-inch TFT meter

The 5-inch TFT meter offers three screen styles to suit different situations. “Explorer” features a dynamic digital stye, while “Street” gives an analogue-type speedometer format. The “Raid” theme features a roadbook inspired design with a focus on trip distances. With Yamaha’s free MyRide app you can stay connected and see text and call notifications on the screen.

Flat one-piece rally seat

When you’re riding off road you need to be able to shift weight easily for optimum controllability. With its flatter profile and extra 20mm of padding, the Ténéré 700 Extreme’s one-piece seat provides added comfort together with improved mobility on the highway and in the dirt.

High level enduro-style front fender

The Ténéré 700 Extreme comes equipped with a high level front fender designed to handle the most extreme off-road conditions. Its lightweight design helps to protect you from surface debris, while a secondary low level half-fender helps deflect dirt and spray away from the bike.

Lightweight titanium footrests

For increased levels of grip in muddy or wet conditions the Ténéré 700 Extreme’s special equipment includes lightweight titanium footrests. 200g lighter and with a 35% larger surface area than the standard design, these competition-style footrests reduce pressure on your boot soles – especially when you’re standing up – giving enhanced controllability thanks to the larger contact area.

690cc, 4-stroke, CP2 engine

Yamaha’s 690cc CP2 engine is designed to deliver the most sensational and satisfying riding experience on any terrain. Producing strong linear torque, this 270° crank powerplant will pull hard all the way from low rpm upwards, making the Ténéré 700 Extreme an outstanding performer whether you’re crossing a continent or ripping it in the dirt.

3-mode switchable ABS

3-mode ABS gives you the option to decide exactly how you want your bike to behave on different surfaces. Mode 1 is full on, with ABS working on both wheels – a legal requirement on public roads. Mode 2 is front wheel on, rear wheel off, giving added confidence on loose gravel tracks. Mode 3 is fully off, giving you ultimate controllability when riding in the dirt.

Ergonomic 16-litre fuel tank

Thanks to the high fuel efficiency of the CP2 engine, the 16-litre fuel tank gives you plenty of range between refills. And whether you’re crossing some extreme off-road terrain or taking a relaxed ride on the highway, the slim tank contributes towards the easy ergonomics that make this remarkable all round adventure bike.

Full LED lighting and USB outlet

The aggressive 4 LED headlight cowl is inspired by the rally-raid race bikes that can trace their DNA back to Yamaha’s Dakar winning racers. The full LED lighting features compact front and rear flashers and a lightweight taillight for high visibility with excellent reliability and low weight.

21-inch/18-inch spoke wheels.

The racing heritage of Ténéré 700 Extreme can be seen in the use of 21-inch/18-inch spoke wheels that combine immense strength with controlled flex to handle rough off-road terrain. The adoption of a 21-inch front wheel and an 18-inch rear wheel also gives you the option to fit full enduro specification tyres for increased off road performance.

Excellent protection for off road riding

This rugged adventure bike comes with a wide range of original equipment that’s designed to protect you and your machine. The lightweight screen and handguards help to deflect wind, while the chain guide and lightweight aluminum mesh radiator protector intercept surface debris and maintain the high performance of your bike.

The Ténéré 700 Extreme will be available in Icon Blue with dedicated graphics.

Best downhill mountain bikes: Bike Perfect's pick of the fastest downhill mountain bikes this year

Everything you need to know about the best downhill mountain bike for you

Santa Cruz V10 Downhill bike

The most extreme form of mountain biking requires bikes of uniquely focussed design. While other off-road cycling disciplines like cross-country bikes prioritise weight saving and efficiency, the best downhill mountain bikes are only built to speedily descend the calibre of technical terrain that most people would struggle walking down.

Best full-face mountain bike helmets

In the realm of downhill racing and riding, suspension performance and terrain taming ability are the most important design parameters. Downhill bikes only require minimal pedalling efficiency because their speed is a factor of gradient and momentum. There is very little pedalling involved on any downhill-grade track. As such, suspension kinematics are unconstrained by issues like anti-squat curves and suspension lockout performance.

The consequences of any mechanical failure on a downhill bike also carry more severe consequences, due to the speeds and terrain involved. Engineering a robust frame, which accurately interprets rider input and deflects punishing terrain, are crucial for any downhill bike.

Downhill bikes also serve as final-product validation for any new mountain bike engineering feature or trend. If any new component or technology survives on a downhill bike, you are guaranteed that average trail or cross-country riders will never be at risk of failure. Read on for  Bike Perfect's  picks for the best downhill bikes available in 2020 or if you are unsure what to look for, skip to everything you need to know about downhill bikes .

Why trust BikePerfect Our cycling experts have decades of testing experience. We\'ll always share our unbiased opinions on bikes and gear. Find out more about how we test.

Santa Cruz V10

Santa Cruz V10

Specifications, reasons to buy, reasons to avoid.

Many of the established trends in current downhill mountain bikes have been the result of Santa Cruz. The Californian brand isn’t afraid of trying new technologies and over its lifecycle (since 2002), the V10 downhill bike has been a trailblazer for evolution.

It was the carbon-fibre bike to win a World Cup downhill race. It also became the first 29er downhill bike to win. Having to accommodate multiple world champion, Greg Minnaar, has meant that Santa Cruz engineers were always researching the possibility of creating longer frames, with more space for rolling bigger wheels.

The V10 combines a sophisticated suspension linkage, with 215mm of travel and rolls 29er wheels. It is simply a downhill rocket sled of a mountain bike.

Commencal Supreme

Commencal Supreme

Commencal remains committed to using aluminium as a frame material but isn’t afraid to experiment with trick chain routing or big wheels.

With the Supreme, it shows that not only Santa Cruz can build a capable 29er downhill bike. Although the Supreme’s rear suspension system is relatively uncomplicated, it does have the benefit of a high-idler chain routing. This guides the chain along the rear triangle’s seat stay, which lessens the negative effect that chain growth can have on a long-travel dual-suspension bike.

That chain idler might look odd to some, but it has proven a very capable design implication for Commencal and scored the Supreme 29er a series of World Cup race wins.

Pivot Phoenix 29

Pivot Phoenix 29

An all-carbon 29er downhill bike with a suspension design from master kinematics consultant, Dave Weagle.

The Phoenix features a leverage curve that is particularly suited to the very latest generation for high-volume air shocks. It might have a touch less travel than its rivals, but it does feature the Superboost 157mm rear axle spacing. This most generous rear hub spacing will allow you the width to build an immensely strong 29er wheel.

For those who are drawn to riding the steepest of technical tracks, Pivot’s big-wheel downhill bike has a 62.5-degree head angle, which means you’ll remain confident, even when it feels like you are trying to go down features which are too intimidating.

Trek Session 29

Trek Session 29 9.9

Trek’s Session is a legendary downhill bike, which has remained relatively recognisable over the years. With a rocker-arm actuated suspension design, Trek Session silhouette is iconic.

An update to larger 29-inch wheels has seen the Session shorted is travel from to 190mm. To protect the frame from rock and trail debris strikes, there is adequate downtube protection, in the form of a special moulding over the carbon fibre.

The Session 29 might not be the longest of downhill bikes, but it certainly is slack. With a 62.1-degree head angle, you’ll launch off even the most vertigo inducing drops with confidence.

Canyon Sender 6 downhill bike

Canyon Sender 6

The German direct-sales brand offers tremendous value. With its Sender you have a choice of aluminium or carbon frames, and no matter which you choose: they are incredibly priced for what they offer.

Canyon remains committed to the 27.5-inch wheel size on its downhill bikes (for now) and the German company has resisted the temptation to chase extreme geometry trends. Although the Sender does register a very slack 63-degree head angle, it is not an overly long bike – like some of its rivals.

The Sender’s rear suspension linkage offers 203mm of travel and has been optimised to run with the latest high-volume air-shocks.

With its compact size and agile geometry, the Sender would be best for riders who enjoy manoeuvring the bike with substantial rider input, instead of merely being a passenger downhill, relying on the frame’s inherent stability.

Best downhill mountain bikes: everything you need to know

Since the advent of downhill-specific racing frames in the late 1990s, maximising suspension travel and kinematic function has always been the object of all designers. It is telling that the bikes on our 2020 list all have rear-suspension travel values of between 190- and 215mm.

When 26-inch downhill frames were all that was available, bikes were much shorter axle-to-axle, but had huge reserves of travel. It was not unusual for a downhill bike from the mid-2000s to have 250mm of rear-suspension stoke. That is simply not the case anymore.

In downhill racing, suspension numbers are not always what they seem. Too much rear-suspension travel can play havoc with shock rebound characteristics. Ensuring that downhill bikes became more predictable in their suspension behaviour over brutally technical terrain, designers started trimming rear travel as larger diameter wheels came into fashion – which could mitigate terrain impacts.

The advancement in air-shock technology also helped convince many that superior internals and shim designs were indeed a replacement for having the most outright millimetres of travel.

Geometry was long ignored as downhill bike designers attempted to package bikes which could cope with the longest possible travel forks and rear shocks. But this has all altered in the last few years.

Downhill bikes require greater stability than any other mountain bike design, due to the gradients and terrain they race on. A longer wheelbase, or even just a longer front triangle, places the rides in a more centred position on any bike. And with the extreme gradients that a downhill descends, rider position is even more crucial.

Multiple downhill racing world champion, and generally considered to be the sport’s greatest rider, Greg Minnaar, has been the source of a revolution in downhill bike geometry and design. Minnaar is an unusually tall downhill rider, at 1.9m. He has always felt too cramped on most downhill bikes and started advocating for the benefits of a longer frame.

The result has been an acceptance that for most downhill riders, especially larger individuals, a longer frame is more enabling. Minnaar’s other significant contribution was proving the value of 29er wheels on downhill bikes. Despite the obvious terrain rolling benefits of larger wheels, downhill bike designers remained stoically committed to 26-inch wheels.

After the move to 27.5-inch wheels, nobody believed that a 29er downhill bike would work. They were projected to be too ungainly. And the issue of designing a frame that would allow extreme suspension travel (front and rear) with adequate clearance of 29-inch wheels, was deemed an unnecessary engineering challenge.

Minnaar convinced Santa Cruz that 29er downhill bikes would work and after debuting one in 2017, his theory has been validated. Once unimaginable, most of the better downhill bikes on offer in 2020 roll the 29er wheel size, which does offer unrivalled traction and stability when storming through severe rock gardens.

Many of the current 29er downhill frames are also available in the smaller wheel size. Those downhill traditionalists who prefer the easier handling (and correction) of a smaller wheeled 27.5- inch bike in the air, will appreciate this option.

Lance Branquinho is a Namibian-born journalist who graduated to mountain biking after injuries curtailed his trail running. He has a weakness for British steel hardtails, especially those which only run a single gear. As well as Bike Perfect , Lance has written for MBR.com , Off-Road.cc and Cycling News.

2024 Yamaha Ténéré 700 Extreme review | The T7 gets tougher and better handling for just a little more cash

Yamaha Ténéré 700 Extreme wheelie over crest

  • Fully-adjustable, longer-travel suspension from the World Raid
  • Dirt-ready footpegs, chain guide and radiator guard
  • Whopping 910mm seat height

At a glance

Overall rating.

The Yamaha Ténéré 700 Extreme adventure bike fills the obvious gap in the T7 range by giving you quality, fully adjustable KYB suspension with the 16-litre tank of the base model . Before, you had to opt for the Ténéré 700 World Raid to get a bike from the factory with suspension that’s up to more than sensible road riding and some sedate green laning, as the basic kit on the standard bike tended to suffer when ridden faster on rough stuff, or asked to absorb big impacts.

But the extra 15kg of the World Raid’s 23-litre fuel tank, not to mention the width between your knees (particularly when stood up on the dirt) compromised some of the Ténéré 700’s ability to deal with both slower, tighter and more technical trails, or be confidently thrown at more challenging terrain.

The Ténéré 700 Extreme essentially mates the ‘small tank’ chassis with the World Raid forks/shock, with a few extra goodies (a high, enduro-style mudguard to keep mud out of your face, larger titanium footpegs delivered without rubber inserts, a radiator guard, chain guide, a flatter and thicker seat plus new dashboard display options). What’s more, Yamaha have priced the Extreme version very competitively – at £10,906, it’s just short of £800 more than the standard model.

Yamaha Ténéré 700 Extreme wheelie off road

You’d struggle to replace the basic Ténéré 700 ’s shock and upgrade the forks to the standard of those on the Extreme for that, and even the mudguard/rally seat/chain guide/radiator guard/uprated footpegs combination comes to £1000 in genuine Yamaha accessories for the base model, so you’re saving a good amount of money and hassle compared to making the original Ténéré better suited to hard off-road use.

The result is a staggeringly capable adventure bike that can handle anything from slow, fiddly or muddy trails to faster unpaved roads as well as dealing with rougher ground and big hits without getting too out of shape – at least for a 205kg bike. It’s never going to match the mountain goat-like ability of a true enduro bike , but this is a bike that can be easily ridden as far as you like on the road to your desired trail, and then send it as hard you dare when you turn off the tarmac and hit the dirt.

  • Related: Find our guide to the best adventure bike kit here

If you intend to exploit the full off-road capability of a Ténéré 700, and don’t need the massive tank range of the World Raid, the Extreme is something of a no-brainer – the only real drawback (albeit a decisive one) is the seat height. The revised shock and linkage, plus the thicker seat, elevates the base model’s seat height from 875mm to 910mm (the World Raid sits in the middle at 890mm), which for my six-foot height (173cm) and 34-inch (86cm) inside leg is only just manageable on flat ground, and requires careful choice of where to stop and put your foot on uneven terrain.

Yamaha Ténéré 700 Extreme rear static

You can opt for a standard T7 seat (cutting 20mm of height), a low option (reducing it by 35mm), as well as a £100 lowering link which brings it down by 18mm, but reverses the increase in ride height Yamaha implement on the Extreme/World Raid models to sharpen the steering.

That aside, the Ténéré 700 Extreme is one of the most fun and capable dual-sport bikes for anyone with serious off-road intent – for any price, let alone the very reasonable RRP.

Ride quality & brakes

KYB forks and shock are not the top-line kit from the Japanese suspension firm (unlike the Ducati DesertX Rally , which has similar-looking but more sophisticated ‘closed cartridge’ forks), but unless you’ve got a string of Paris-Dakar entries behind you, you’d be hard pushed to fault the Ténéré 700 Extreme’s running gear.

The forks in particular are sublime – whether it’s the ultra-low stiction ‘Kashima’ coating on the stanchions, well-chosen spring/damping rates or both, the action is so smooth and plush it’s hard to detect just how hard the front end is being worked: all you know is that you’re being insulated from the nastiest of what’s under you, yet support and feel levels are still high, and grip in wet conditions on the launch was good, despite ‘only’ being fitted with 50/50 Dunlop Trailmax Raid tyres for this press test (standard are Pirelli Scorpion STR, which are more road biased and won’t allow full exploitation of the Extreme’s chassis).

The increase in travel doesn’t mean it uses more as a matter of course – in fact, the firmer feel of the components means it only uses what’s required, rather than blowing through the fork or shock stroke as it struggles to maintain control, as the base model can do when pushed beyond the design limits of an affordable adventure bike. The extra travel is simply added insurance when hammering across rocks, roots, humps and bumps, or sending the occasional jump.

Yamaha Ténéré 700 Extreme front detail

We never felt the ankle-jarring jolt of a bottomed-out shock, or the wrist-snapping clunk of a fork with nothing left to give. Undoubtedly, it can be done, but that limit is further away. That means greater comfort for normal riding (which is in turn, less fatiguing), and for the ex-enduro nutcases Yamaha believe might be drawn to this tougher Ténéré, it can be ridden faster and asked to tackle tougher obstacles.

We didn’t get to spend any time on the road with the Extreme: reach to the floor aside, the changes should work well on the road for more spirited riding too (on OE tyres, at least) as the firmer suspension will reduce pitch and increase feel. The thicker seat may be more comfortable, too.

A claimed 72bhp (so high 60s at the rear wheel) sounds a touch feeble for an experienced rider, but the CP2 twin is plenty enough for the Ténéré to go about the business of off-roading for most riders.

Torque and usability is key to its effectiveness on the trail – it’s a dated engine now, but it was right to begin with so it doesn’t fall down next to newer rivals, at least not on the dirt. A lack of ride-by-wire often means super-snatchy initial throttle response with modern emissions compliance to contend with, but the Yamaha gives little more than a polite cough when you pick up a closed throttle, not an abrupt jerk as some do. It’s certainly not enough to upset low speed manoeuvring drastically, and it’s not crying out for aftermarket modifications to correct either.

It feels like there’s a fair bit of inertia in the crank to account for it – the pay-off is that it’s harder to snap the throttle and punch it over obstacles to ensure a flat landing. It takes a bigger handful of throttle to pop the front up, for which you need to be utterly assured in your technique and control… If the going gets tricky or sticky, it’ll happily roll along at tick-over.

Yamaha Ténéré 700 Extreme engine

Feed it a few more onions and the chunky grunt is effective at digging the rear tyre into whatever it’s rolling over and whipping it up to speed, and the gear ratios make it insensitive to gear choice – it’ll usually pull one of at least two gears at any given speed without problem. It’s hard to imagine any circumstance where you’d need more power from an adventure bike – off-road, at least. On the road, the engine is on the cusp of struggling with higher speeds, a pillion or luggage: or a combination of the three.

The Extreme, like the other members of the Ténéré family, is only Euro 5 compliant, not Euro 5+, so we expect some kind of update for 2025 to combat that legislative issue – a significant update with enhanced power as well as cleaner running is likely, especially with rivals introduced since the T7’s launch generally offering at least 15bhp more.

Tech fans might notice there’s no quickshifter: it is an option (as it is on the base and World Raid, although the Ténéré Explore has it as standard), but as well as the cost implications, Yamaha also say it’d be too sensitive for riders likely spending more time in chunky off-road boots. It’d be harder to avoid nudging the lever and accidentally triggering it with a fat toe-box, and it’d also be vulnerable in off-road spills. The GYTR race kit doesn’t include a quickshifter either, so we’re inclined to believe them.

Yamaha Ténéré 700 Extreme crossing deep puddle

Reliability & build quality

The engine is built in Japan, while Yamaha’s factory in northern France is responsible for building a chassis and dropping the motor in. They do a good job on the whole – the Ténéré 700’s motor has proven tough and impervious to all but the most neglectful owners. If there’s enough oil in it and it’s changed roughly on time, it’ll last, and there are no major failures reported as a regular occurrence in the rest of the running gear either.

Where the Ténéré does fall short is some of the detailing where Yamaha have clearly made sacrifices to build the bike down to a budget. The Ténéré’s closest competitors – the Suzuki V-Strom 800DE and Honda XL750 Transalp – share frames with their budget naked siblings to cut costs. The Yamaha has its own chassis (part of why it’s still the best on the dirt), so the cuts are made elsewhere.

The standard chain is usually the first thing to corrode, with its unplated links dependendent on regular cleaning and lubrication to avoid going orange. The brakes might be Brembo, and they may work just fine, but salt and wet weather can cause them to seize in short order. Cleaning the castings, pistons and other hardware is a must if you’re subjecting them to winter conditions or off-road filth.

Yamaha Ténéré 700 Extreme muddy forrest

Wheel spokes are also a common corrosion item, and countless owners have had them replaced under warranty – but the replacements are identical, so the cycle begins again. The issue is more cosmetic than structural, so some owners just accept that it’s going to happen. Again, cleaning and maintenance can help minimise this: if you want to take it to the next level, rebuilding the wheels with stainless spokes (and maybe stronger/lighter off-road rims for harder riders looking to get the most from the Extreme model) will permanently banish unsightly wheels.

Value vs rivals

Ténéré 700s are loved as much for the affordable ownership experience as they way they ride. Merciless use of the throttle might drop fuel consumption into the 40s, but 50s is achieveable, and 60+ mpg not difficult to get either. They’re light on consumables, servicing is straightforward and inexpensive, and they’re the best equipped to deal with the rigours of dirt riding in their class.

That said, it’s worth adding protection: crash bars (£262 from the genuine accessories catalogue) should be your first purchase, as they cover the fairing side panels and radiator – about the most vulnerable parts on this slender machine. A sump protector/bash plate is provided as standard, but if you’re going to be encountering a lot of rocks then there’s a more substantial upgrade offered for £275.

There’s also a set of tank grip pads (£81) that will assist with standing up, but also protect the Sonauto/Gauloises-inspired paint from being rubbed by muddy kit. Otherwise, upgrades will come down to personal preference: you can make it more practical, or better performing, depending on what you intend to do with it. For riders struggling with the height, there is a low seat/lowering link kit for £276 that takes a combined 52mm from the seat height, but the link does compromise a little of the Extreme’s enhanced suspension action. Try the seat first, and only fit the link if you really can’t reach or adapt your technique for coming to a standstill.

Yamaha Ténéré 700 Extreme front wheel landing

The Extreme variant of the Ténéré doesn’t have a direct rival when you consider its price and harder-core off-road bent. The Suzuki V-Strom 800DE is listed at £10,999 for 2024, and while it’s a decent performer off-road, it’s a substanstial 25kg more, with a touch less suspension travel and clearance, so it’s geared more towards mixed on/off-road touring than tackling tougher trails.

Honda’s XL750 Transalp is a decent bike, and at £9699 it’s a useful amount less than the Tenere. The engine is also more willing on the road, and the 850mm seat height is lower than you can ever get the Ténéré 700 Extreme using standard points. But you wouldn’t want to take it on much more than gentle green lanes and gravel tracks without toughening it up – the low-slung exhaust and oil filter look ripe for some rock damage…

From Europe, KTM offer the 790 Adventure for £10,499 – it’s more powerful and a better tourer, but the chassis is lower spec and again geared more towards combined touring/trail use, so the heavier orange machine won’t be quite as easy to manage in the dirt. It’s also built in China: we’ve seen no reason that this should be an issues, but it’s only been on sale a year, so its yet to earn its reliability stripes.

The firm’s Austrian factory also offer the 890 Adventure and 890 Adventure R – the latter leaning towards tougher off-road use, with a high-spec chassis and electronics package, as well as a punchier motor than the Yamaha. But it’ll set you back £13,999.

Ducati also offer two versions of the DesertX – the base model is £14,995, and surprisingly adept off-road for a company with minimal off-road heritage. There is also the DesertX Rally, which like the Ténéré has specific longer-travel suspension and an insanely high rally seat – however, at £18,995, the Yamaha stands as a drastically cheaper option for a prospective Ducati buyer, but it’s unlikely anyone standing in a Yamaha showroom will consider trotting along to a Ducati outlet to spend another £8000…

There’s little more you could ask for at this price – it’s kitted out and ready to go hard off-road as it comes. Almost: it seems odd that the standard tyre choice remains the same as the rest of the T7 family, rather than coming kitted with tyres that match the rest of the chassis’ capability.

If we were to nit-pick, the CP2 engine is long in the tooth as a road engine, and it’s lagging behind rivals on the tarmac in terms of peak power as well as refinements like ride modes that come with ride-by-wire: the Bowden cable directly connecting wrist and throttle body is good in some ways, but it limits features as well as the ability to balance emissions conformity and power characteristic.

It’s less of an issue here than in any other Ténéré model (and the MT-07, R7 and XSR700 sharing the same lump) as more power isn’t as desirable off-road as it is on it – throttle response could be fractionally nicer for low speed work, but in the Extreme, it does the job nicely. Tellingly, the one thing the £25,000 GYTR kit doesn’t include in the near-total parts replacement

Model history & versions

Model history.

  • 2024: Yamaha Ténere 700 Extreme – New derivative of the T7 family, combining the slim build and lower weight of the basic model with the premium suspension of the World Raid model.
  • 2022: Yamaha Ténéré 700 World Raid – Big-tank edition of the 700, with 23l capacity (instead of 16l), as well as fully-adjustable KYB suspension and an Öhlins steering damper as standard. Ideally suited to crossing continents – on or off road – rather than green laning, where the extra weight and width penalises handling to a degree.
  • 2019: Yamaha Ténéré 700 – New model, utilising the MT-07’s cross-plane parallel twin engine in a unique adventure chassis. Simply-built but well-designed, the T7 was an instant hit, helped partly by aggressive pricing from launch. RRP is now more on a par with rivals, but still offers good value for money.
