One of the better shows I have seen in 2017! I had never been to Fred Kavli Theater before. What a nice venue. The seats were spacious with plenty of leg room. Colbie Caillat was wonderful, taking the audience on a trip through her catalog of hit music in chronological order. I am planning on checking the schedule of events to that venue as it was really a great evening of music and so close to home!

IN THE ADRIAN PHILLIPS THEATER

Get ready for a reunion of GRAMMY® winner Colbie Caillat with fellow multi-platinum singer/songwriter and actor Gavin DeGraw for a night of breezy pop and blue-eyed soul. The world fell for Colbie Caillat with her hit song “Bubbly,” and Gavin DeGraw blew up the charts with “I Don’t Want to Be.” The artists are no strangers to working together. They co-wrote the GRAMMY® nominated “We Both Know,” featured in the movie Safe Haven. Caillat, known for her vibey and mellow California sound, has sold millions of albums worldwide and was named one of the top 100 best-selling music artists of the 2000s by Billboard. She’s written with Taylor Swift, toured with John Mayer, and even performed at the Nobel Peace Prize Concert. DeGraw rose to fame with his song “I Don’t Want to Be”, which was also the theme song for the series One Tree Hill. He’s the rare talent whose inimitable voice and soulful style allows him to seamlessly navigate sharing stages with acts as diverse as Billy Joel, Maroon 5 and Shania Twain. Catch them together this summer at North2Shore.

colbie caillat tour 2023

Her first work released under her own label, Blue Jean Baby, Caillat began the album’s cycle with the release of several promotional singles. Tracks like “Worth It” and “Wide Open” indicated that she’d switched out instruments like the ukulele for a more raw, acoustic guitar. None of the songs are really the kind of country music you find with artists like Miranda Lambert or even Kacey Musgraves, who has always had a softer, more restrained side; Caillat, instead, sounds like a Southern California, boho girl who moved to the country music capital and adapted the genre to fit with her own musical history.

Depending on how familiar you are with her past music, “I’ll Be Here,” featuring Sheryl Crow, the only collaboration on the record, will have you questioning if you shuffled her old album. The song is a rerecording of her 2014 track “Never Gonna Let You Down,” now recorded in the style she wrote the song in. And it’s a much-needed stylistic change. The problem with her entire Gypsy Heart album where the song originally appeared was that the inflated poppy production and sappy songs about self-love didn’t conjure the same charm as the previous free-spirited records she gained fame with. Hearing “I’ll Be Here” alongside the rest of Along the Way makes it feel like it has really found its place.

In the seven years between records, Caillat founded the band Gone West in 2018 alongside her partner of 10 years, Justin Young, and longtime collaborator Jason Reeves (the two have written most of her biggest songs together, like “Bubbly” and “I Never Told You”). When Calliat and Young broke off their engagement and ended their relationship in 2020, the band parted ways. Perhaps being single for the first time since her mid-20s triggered her desire to explore a fresh sound for the next record. And despite the breakup, Along the Way doesn’t really sound sad, and instead, much of the songwriting deals with the late-30s and now single Caillat navigating life. In “Sometimes You Need A Change,” we find Caillat the day after her relationship ended, understanding that the severing of ties between them was necessary. There are references to numerous other musical pieces throughout: she mentions wild horses that carried her away and refers to herself as both a gypsy heart and a rolling stone. There isn’t much blame to be passed around, just acceptance of two people who were no longer fit to be with one another. “ There’s still someone I need to be/ I can’t know us until I know me ,” she concludes during the song’s outro.

Perhaps the best and most country song on the record is “Old and New,” where Caillat describes holding onto the memories of her relationship while now residing in Tennessee. She references pictures on the wall, an LP of Fleetwood Mac’s Rumors playing (her father produced the wildly successful album and several others for the band), and being single and still shy at 35. By far the longest song on the record, its lowkey country elements and long outro easily make it one of the best Caillat songs in over a decade. In fact, lowkey, easy music is the best way to describe the entire record. It is what she has always been known to produce and is what makes the album such a welcome return for Caillat.

What is a pre-queue, and how does the pre-queue work?

Before the tickets are released to the public, CBUSArts.com will have a pre-queue turned on. Visitors in the pre-queue see a countdown to the start of the sale or registration. Once the sale or registration starts, those early-comers in the pre-queue are randomized, and from that point on anyone else who joins the waiting room will be put at the back of the queue in a first-come, first-served order.

A pre-queue prevents website crashes from early demand and delivers online fairness.

How does the waiting room work?

Guests will be placed in a waiting room queue with an estimate number of how many customers are ahead of you in line. Keep your browser window open to keep your spot in line. Once it is your turn, you will gain access to the ticket link to save your seats.

Do you offer email notifications for customers in line?

Yes! Once in the waiting room, you can sign up to be notified via email when you’re close to getting into the ticket link. When it is your turn, you have a limited amount of time to access the site you want to visit.

Should I refresh my page to update my spot in line?

No. Refreshing your browser while you are waiting in the queue will not effect your position in line. The queue will continue to update to show your current status in line as well as any additional messages from the organizer in real time. When it is your turn, you will be automatically redirected to the website.

I signed up for the newsletter - does that guarantee my tickets?

Signing up for the newsletter grants you early access to tickets, it does not guarantee tickets. Ticket quantities are limited, and we expect all tickets to be claimed quickly so be sure to mark your calendars for each ticket release date. Newsletter subscribers must sign up by June 3 to be included in the distribution of the early-access link for the Gavin DeGraw and Colbie Caillat concert and by July 29 for the Sugar Ray, Tonic and Lit concert.

What if I don’t get a ticket? What can I do?

Tickets are limited and may be claimed quickly.

Will tickets be available day-of?

We will not be able to accommodate day-of walk-ups due to crowd capacity.

How do I find my tickets for the show day?

All tickets will be delivered digitally and vailable in your digital ticket wallet. To access your tickets, visit wallet.cbusarts.com and login in with your CBUSArts account information. For more information, visit the CAPA FAQ page. If you have any questions about retrieiving your ticket, reach out to [email protected].

Will CBUS Arts, Columbus Commons or CAPA honor tickets reserved through third-party resellers, ticket brokers, or other outside entities?

Tickets purchased from another source may be counterfeit, and we cannot guarantee you will have a seat upon arrival.

Colbie Caillat talks country, covers, collabs ahead of Columbus Commons show

colbie caillat tour 2023

Most pop radio listeners first encountered singer-songwriter Colbie Caillat 's cool-as-a-California-beach-breeze voice on her 2007 breakthrough hit, "Bubbly."

If you were a MySpace junkie, you might remember the song blowing up on the social media network, where Caillat (rhymes with "ballet") went from not knowing how to post music to becoming one of the site's most popular unsigned artists.

Years later, Caillat has headlined tours, scored several more hits, won two Grammys, written songs for other artists and worked with industry titans from Babyface to Taylor Swift. And that's just the condensed version of what the 39-year-old musician has done since her auspicious beginning online.

So what? She's still a rock star: Record-setting pop star Pink will return to the Schottenstein Center on Oct. 9

Next, she and fellow singer-songwriter Gavin DeGraw — with whom she sang the Grammy-nominated duet "We Both Know” — are coming to Columbus Commons for a free concert at 7 p.m. Sunday.

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

All tickets for the show have been claimed, so if you missed out, shoot for the Sugar Ray concert Aug. 25. Free tickets are to be released at 10 a.m. on July 31 at columbuscommons.org/events/common-ground .

The Dispatch recently caught up with Caillat, a native Californian now living in Nashville, to discuss her latest album , "Along the Way," her dream collaborations, her friendship with DeGraw and more.

Question: You've been busy these past few years. You were in a band , you toured, you released a country album. What else have you been up to?

Colbie Caillat : All of those things! (Laughs) I've also been trying to find a good balance with work and home life. I love living in Nashville. I have so many great friends here. I can work in this town, travel and work and come home to a really fun town. So, I've just been living life.

Question: "Along the Way" is a departure for you, but your voice sounds comfortable with country. What inspired you to switch gears?

Caillat : It's been a natural progression. Since the beginning of my career, I've been coming to Nashville; it really felt like home away from home. Even though I was categorized as pop, I never felt like I did pop.

I wasn't like, "Oh, I'm going to do a country album." I love steel guitar and dobro… it just feels kind of natural.

Question: So country wasn't as big a leap for you as, say, Beyoncé or Post Malone ?

Caillat : The interesting thing about being a songwriter, it's how the song is produced and what you do with it. All of those artists have been produced more pop and urban. I love Beyoncé on piano and guitar. It's amazing when artists can explore other genres.

Question: You've done some great covers including Roberta Flack's " Killing Me Softly ," Lauryn Hill's " Tell Him " and Sister Sledge's "We Are Family." What other songs do you enjoy covering?

Caillat : Lately, I've been covering Post Malone's "Circles" and Brooks & Dunn's "Neon Moon." I grew up with all different genres of music; I was raised on harmonies and heartbreaking lyrics, which I absolutely love. Now I think I might need to start finding a new batch of songs to make my own.

Question: The aforementioned cover songs lean heavily toward R&B. How did you come by your love for the genre?

Caillat : I was raised on classic rock, reggae and R&B. The first time I knew I wanted to sing was when I heard Lauryn Hill sing "His Eye Is on the Sparrow" in "Sister Act 2." That someone's voice could sound that beautiful and effortless is amazing. Even her work with the Fugees, I love that record and "The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill."

Question: Who would you love to collaborate with?

Caillat : Post Malone, Coldplay — working with Chris Martin would be a dream, Morgan Wallen. I am making a collaboration album with a lot of artists; it's in the works. I've been talking about doing it for four or five years, then the pandemic happened. Now, it just feels right.

Question: Speaking of collaborating, you and Gavin DeGraw performed here last year at a benefit. Have you worked together since or will this be a reunion?

Caillat : We're best friends; we see each other all the time! He's in Nashville a lot of the time. We went onstage with (country-pop singer) Brett Young (recently). There's always something we're doing.

Deeper Well World Tour: Country star Kacey Musgraves coming to Columbus in November

Question: Are you singing together at the upcoming show or doing separate sets?

Caillat : Both! We each do our own set, then do roughly 30 minutes together. Gavin has one of my favorite voices I've ever heard. We'll be sharing a band and doing all of our songs throughout our careers, plus some cover songs together. It'll be a mix-up of him and me with audience interaction. It's going to be really fun with good energy.

Question: What's coming down the road for you?

Caillat : We just have a week of shows this August, playing some festivals in California and Florida and the U.K. I took a lot of the summer off to travel for fun. I have a lot of trips booked with friends and family that I'm really looking forward to.
