Even the best and most enthusiastic outdoor lovers among us needs some inspiration, tips, and tricks to survive in the woods. Plus, let’s face it: watching others do the things we enjoy is entertaining! We can always learn something new from each other. And, when we’re too busy to find the time to go camping or engage in the outdoor activities we love, it’s still fun to watch videos about these topics.

Whatever the case, these Youtube channels will offer you practical ideas and survival tips to make your next camping expedition an enjoyable experience. (We’d love a subscribe to our YouTube channel while you’re over there! There aren’t a ton of videos on it yet, but we have a bunch planned for the future.)

1. Survival Lilly While this channel offers some pretty hardcore outdoor survival tips, there are also plenty of basic camping tips as well. With two new videos uploaded each week, there is always something fresh to watch. From survival gear reviews to fishing tips, building a basic shelter and campfire tips, this channel has a lot to unpack.

2. Guide You Outdoors Just like the name promises, this channel takes you on a guided tour outdoors, allowing you to explore everything from pitching up your tents, exploring the wild safely, and how to enjoy camping. Their videos contain a lot of tips and detailed instructions on how to handle basic stuff when you are camping in the woods.  They have several different themed playlists, including gear reviews, the Appalachian Trail and canoeing the La Vérendrye Wildlife Preserve.

3. Steve Wallis Steve Wallis has had a lot of adventures in the wild. His channel discusses everything from rafting, camping, backpacking, and cycling while giving your insider tips on how to enjoy these outdoor adventures as safely as possible. He is a wild camper who enjoys camping in the winter and his winter camping tips will help you enjoy the outdoors, despite how cold the weather is.

4. Shugemery This is a very hilarious channel, brought to life by Sean Emery. His main focus is on backpacking, camping, and hammocking although he sometimes veers off-topic to discuss other issues such as reviews of outdoor gear. You will find this channel to be refreshing and still gather the tips and tricks you may need to survive a great backpacking adventure.

5. Ronny Dahl If you love big cars, car camping, backpacking, hiking in the wild, and rough terrain challenges, this is the channel you should follow. Ronny delivers highly exciting videos that feature amazing escapades into the wild (Australia, specifically!), with 4×4 vehicles. He uploads his videos every week.

6. 50 Campfires This channel focuses on gear reviews, camping tips, recipes, and survival tactics. You can also follow the channel to get great tips on how to choose the best camping locations. Some of the locations they review are incredible and off the beaten track! My particular fave on their channel are the fun camping recipes.

7. Homemade Wanderlust

Started as almost an afterthought, Homemade Wanderlust has grown to become a popular outdoor survival channel. Dixie just wanted to document her long hikes but soon enough, she found out that people wanted advice on how to prepare and handle such hikes. From her practical tips, to the beautiful scenery, this is an entertaining channel for anyone who appreciates the outdoors.

8. Fresh Off the Grid

Preparing delicious food in the great outdoors in the main focus on Fresh Off the Grid’s Channel. If you think that camping means eating a lot of canned food and granola bars, think again. This channel has some really amazing recipes you can try. While it doesn’t appear that the channel has been updated in awhile, the video archives offer plenty of content to keep you busy (and full!) for awhile.

Let us know if you already watch any of these channels! Are there other great camping and/or survival channels that you enjoy watching? Let us know in the comments!

The 5 Best Full Time RV Living YouTube Channels

Less Junk, More Journey family in their Airstream

Interested in full-timing? Check out some of the best full time RV living YouTube channels, like Less Junk, More Journey (pictured)

Why You Should Subscribe to these Top Full-time RVing Channels on YouTube

How many of you watch YouTube more than you watch cable or shows on your smart TV? The Google video service has not only churned out excellent DIY and cat videos, but has also made stars out of seemingly normal people. Anyone who has a good camera, some editing skills, and a winning personality can become a YouTube sensation.

The best YouTube videos need to cover several bases. They need to be entertaining, informative, and beautifully filmed. It also helps if they are of adequate length (around 20 to 30 minutes) and not overly ad-heavy.

These types of videos can be a challenge to find, but when you do find them, the filmmakers become part of your life and you will end up really looking forward to their next episode.

For those of us interested in RVs and camping, this goes double. We really get attached to our favorite YouTube channels that feature our favorite full-timers, RV tours, DIY projects, and road trips. We also tend to stick with these channels and become subscribers or even Patreon supporters.

The following YouTube channels run the gamut from single travelers and couples living full-time in larger Class A or Class C rigs to minimalists in truck campers or fiberglass trailers. These full-time RVers are all experts in their type of camping. They have been living on the road (maybe in multiple RVs) for at least several years, so these are the ones to watch for both information and inspiration.

1. We’re the Russos

If you want a no-nonsense, to-the-point series of life on the road, be sure to subscribe to We’re the Russos . Joe and Kait have been living on the road for several years and have had experience with many different types of RVs on their search for the perfect home on wheels.

Full time RV living YouTube channels such as We’re the Russos can be both informative and inspirational.

They started out in a Class A towing a Jeep. Then they massively downsized to a Hymer van, and then to a Four-Wheel Campers Hawk flat bed truck camper on a diesel truck.

Each of their videos is beautifully shot without containing irrelevant information. The couple covers their trips around the country, off-road treks, RV and expo tours, gear recommendations, and the challenges of living in a truck camper.

While their videos are entertaining, the best part is Joe and Kaiti. They are friendly and enthusiastic about the RV life and would be wonderful to meet in person.

2. Creativity RV

Robin of Creativity RV has a loyal following for both her great personality and her honest view of life on the road. Robin lives full-time in her Grand Design Solitude 310GK fifth wheel. She previously lived in a Class B and a Class C.

Clean RV Water video with Creativity RV

Her videos are brutally honest accounts of her life in her RV and what it’s like to be a single female on the road. She also interviews other full-time RVers as well as people looking to go full-time. Some of her best videos include how to make a living on the road and how to find free boondocking spots for larger rigs.

3. Less Junk, More Journey

Marissa and Nathan of Less Junk, More Journey are unique in this list because they live in their RV with their two children. After selling their house and most of their possessions in 2015, they moved into an Airstream.

Since then, they have tried out several other RVs such as a fifth wheel and a Grand Design 378MBS Class A . They even lived in a van in Hawaii for a month.

The Less Junk, More Journey videos are popular for a reason. They are beautifully filmed with nice music, impromptu chatter from their children, and a real look at life on the road. The couple also shoots videos on RV gear, modifications, RV expos, and unusual campers and trailers.

4. Elsa Rhae & Barron

This young couple is in a class of their own. After leaving their apartment in Kansas City, Elsa Rhae and Barron moved into a tiny Scamp fiberglass camper with their dog, Kamp. They eschew the typical RV life and live more on the minimal side with a modular battery setup from Goal Zero , very simple wardrobes and gear, and their trusty Subaru towing it all.

Out of all these RV videos, this couple’s film style is totally unique. They show unusual camera angles and play great music. Their clips cover subjects ranging from cleaning and cooking in their RV to hiking and backpacking adventures. The couple recently purchased 40 acres in Colorado. Now their Scamp camper is a tiny house sitting on their land.

5. Off-Grid Backcountry Adventures

On his YouTube channel, Brian Galyon and his dog, Sierra, get back to basics. Brian has been living full-time in his Toyota Tacoma with a truck topper since 2015. In the winter, he lives in a 4-season tent with a wood stove in the backcountry of Colorado and Arizona.

Brian, his Tacoma and truck topper in the desert.

His videos are not flashy and full of music or fancy cuts. They’re simple and basic with realistic views of life in the woods and the high desert.

Brian recently purchased a vintage Jayco Yellowstone camper that he has parked on his property. He gives full coverage of how he lives off-grid and what he does with his land and gear. Again, like his videos, Brian keeps his DIY projects basic, simple, and budget-friendly.

One of the best parts about RVing is engaging with the community of traveling enthusiasts. iRV2 forums allow folks to chat with other RVers online, and get other perspectives on everything RVing, including products, destinations, RV mods, and much more.

7 thoughts on “ The 5 Best Full Time RV Living YouTube Channels ”

Everyone has to make choices. Most of these bloggers came from back rounds other than rv’ing, so take what they offer knowing that. Too many people get into this and stay by trial and error….that is expensive. When you change rigs every year or two (more often in some cases), it’s too costly for normal people to pursue. The same holds true with the products and services these bloggers claim are the best. By-in-large people who look for help in the rv realm are still rooted in jobs that are stationary- totally the opposite of most bloggers. Personally, I like information based on facts. There are a few people out there who really help rv’ers in a cost conscious way: Love Your RV, RV Miles, MY RV Works, and RV Street are a few examples. These people all have technical back rounds and share useful information to rv’ers . You can trust the material they share.

Hello Christina, . On the list of 5, I only saw one of the people you mention on YouTube, Less Junk, More Journey, and don’t follow any more. The episode of Marissa and Nathan are not very interesting, especially now they are in Hawaii. I am surprise you do not have “Tails of Wanderlust”, or “Wandering Weekends”, or “Keep Your Daydream – E3 Camping Association”, or “RV Miles”. I learn something when I watch the one I just mention, but that is just my opinion.

I agree with you on some, like Creativity RV, some I am putting on my list to watch but others are getting away from “what/who brought them to the dance” and we end up watching the most boring aspect of their life. Really, going to Hawaii amid covid mandates and putting your children in the “mask hoax”. Sorry but I’m not watching that any longer. And as for the Russo’s, it was painful to witness the interaction with his mom. Agree to disagree.

Leaving Keep Your Daydream off the list is a huge oversight….Marc and Trish are fun, informative, and great at sharing camping and towing info. It’s the best RV related channel!

These are not “typical” RV people. We are looking for motorhome folks that go to normal RV sites around the country.

Keep your Daydream has become the standard in content and production for a YouTube RV channel. Traveling Robert is also very good. Not sure how they were not considered.

Brian Off-Grid is a gem. He’s one of the guys- if not THE guy- who launched me into RV’ing from a camping perspective, as I’ve always been a rough-it guy and primitive camper/hunter. My gear accumulation takes up half my garage as proof! Mostly because I have provisions for a family of 6+…but I digress. Last year my oldest son went full time in a 5th wheel- and loves it. Got his fiancé’ and 2 brother pups on board too. I feel like we are just getting started… Brian resonates in me. The Russo’s do also.

Going by current trends, Steve's channel will reach 1.5 million subscribers in early 2023. However, it wouldn't be unrealistic to see the channel reach this milestone by the end of 2022, as many videos uploaded tend to get picked up by the YouTube algorithm.

“Lunchables”

If you’re heading out on a hike or to the lake to hang out for the day, pack these adult “Lunchables” snack boxes ! We’ve made two different kinds–a take on the classic meat, cheese & crackers, and mini-pizzas. Here’s what we include in each one:

Meat, Cheese & Crackers

  • Fancy crackers
  • Sliced cheese
  • Smoked turkey slices

  • Assorted nuts
  • Dried apricots
  • Seedless grapes

Charcuterie boards are one of our favorite no cook camping meals! Using a cutting board or a large plate, arrange a selection of meat like salami, prosciutto, and pepperoni. Add a variety of cheeses–-hard and semi-firm cheese like cheddar, Gouda, Manchego, and Pepper Jack will pack best. Add color and variety with crackers, olives, pickles, nuts, and sliced fruits.

Pinwheel sandwiches on a wood background with a striped napkin.

Pinwheel Sandwiches

Spread fillings on a tortilla, roll it up, and slice it into bite-sized pieces. These are great for sharing and are a fun twist on traditional sandwiches. Try this club-style pinwheels for an easy lunch!

Chickpea salad wrapped in tortillas.

Chickpea Salad

Smash chickpeas with some mayo and mustard to create a chickpea salad. We also like to add a hint of curry powder to ours. Use it in a wrap with veggies, as a sandwich filling, or on crackers for a meat-free meal.

Tuna salad sandwiches on a plate.

Mix canned tuna with mayo and your favorite add-ins for a classic no-cook meal. It’s easy to prepare either ahead of time at home or at the campsite and can be enjoyed on its own or as a sandwich filling. Here’s a great tuna salad recipe to start with!

Chicken salad with grapes in a bowl.

Black Bean and Corn Salad

Black Bean and Corn Salad is a great plant-based lunch idea. Drain a can of black beans and mix it with fresh corn sliced off the cob or thawed frozen corn, diced red bell pepper, quartered cherry tomatoes, and chopped cilantro. Make a quick lime vinaigrette using olive oil, lime juice, and salt, and toss everything together.

Tomatoes basil and cheese on a plate.

Caprese Salad

Layer sliced tomatoes, fresh mozzarella, basil, and balsamic vinaigrette to make a simple (and beautiful!) salad. If you’d like, slices of prosciutto or salami are the perfect way to add protein!

A mezze platter is an easy light lunch or dinner option. Just pair some chopped veggies, pita chips or flatbread, and olives with a generous dollop of hummus. Toss in some feta cheese, and you’ve got yourself an even more satisfying meal!

Megan holding a plastic container full of pasta salad. She's picking up a spoonful.

This is one of our favorite backpacking lunches, and it would be great for car camping too! We dehydrate pasta and veggies at home, and then a few hours before lunch, add water to rehydrate. You can get the step-by-step instructions here !

Pita Stuffed with Veggies and Feta

Fill pita bread with a mix of tomatoes, cucumbers, olives, peppers, red onion, chickpeas, and feta cheese. Add a dollop of Greek yogurt or hummus for creaminess.

Go back to basics with this classic combo. We like to make ours on thick slices of brioche bread and use berry preserves to make it feel a little more grown-up.

Megan holding a handful of homemade granola

Trail Mix with Nuts, Dried Fruit, and Chocolate Chips

Trail mix  is a classic that’s easy to customize with your favorite nuts, seeds, and dried fruit. It’s super portable and packable, so it’s great to have on hand as a lunch option on hikes or excursions from the campsite. Our favorite is this sweet and salty  maple trail mix .

  • Peach & almond butter
  • Apple & peanut butter
  • Strawberries & chocolate hazelnut butter (aka Nutella!)
  • Blackberries & peanut butter

Bagels with Cream Cheese and Veggies

Top bagels with cream cheese and sliced veggies for an easy sandwich. Try dicing bell peppers and mixing it into the cream cheese, then layer sliced tomatoes and cucumbers on top.

Croissants with Turkey and Cheese

Hummus in a bowl with veggie sticks and crackers.

Hummus and Veggies or Pita Chips

Whether homemade or storebought, hummus is great to have in your cooler for a no-cook lunch. Bring sliced veggie sticks, pita chips, or crackers to scoop it up.

English Muffin “Pizzas”

Top English muffins with sauce, cheese, and pepperoni to make no-cook “pizzas”. Okay, okay, we know this is kind of a poor substitute… but these mini pizzas are kind of fun and kids love them!

Half an avocado stuffed with tuna salad.

Avocado Halves Stuffed with Tuna Sala d

Fill avocado halves with tuna salad for a no cook meal that’s full of protein and healthy fats. This Tuna Avocado Boat recipe from Dad with a Pan incorporates fresh veggies and a hint of spice.

Peanut Butter, Banana, and Honey Sandwiches

Sandwich peanut butter, banana slices, and a drizzle of honey between slices of bread to make sandwiches that are a hit with kids (and adults!).

Egg salad in a bowl.

Make a batch of Egg Salad before your trip, and use it as a filling for sandwiches, pita pockets, or tossed with extra greens for a protein-packed salad. It’s so versatile for no-cook camping trips and stores well in a cooler for up to three days.

Spicy mayo, tuna, and cucumber sandwich

Cucumber, Avocado, and Spicy Sandwich

Cool cucumber and avocado play against the heat of Sriracha mayo in this tuna sandwich. Make your own Sriracha mayo by combining 2 teaspoons Sriracha with ¼ cup mayo. Spread it over two slices of bread and layer sliced cucumbers, avocado, and trained canned tuna. We like to add a little cilantro to our sandwiches as well.

A bowl of dip surrounded by sliced carrots, celery, broccoli, and grape tomatoes.

Veggies and Dip

Bring along your favorite dip and pair it with raw vegetables: sliced bell peppers, carrots, celery, cucumber, jicama, sugar snap peas, broccoli florets, and cherry tomatoes will store well in a cooler. This is great for a light snack or as part of a larger meal.

Chopped italian sandwich in a big bun on parchment paper.

Chopped Italian Sandwich

This Chopped Italian Sandwich is a super satisfying meal for big appetites! The chopped salad can be prepped at home or at camp, and it requires zero cooking. Load up a big hoagie roll and enjoy!

Salad ingredients in a cooler

Salad Kit s

Utilize pre-packaged salad kits for quick and easy meals. These kits come with everything you need for a delicious salad, including dressing. This is a super convenient way to enjoy salads at camp, and you can even add chopped salami, deli turkey, or canned tuna to up the protein.

Pasta salad with veggies in a bowl.

Make Ahead Pasta Salad

Prepare a pasta or tortellini salad before your trip for a meal that’s easy to pack into a cooler and doesn’t need any heat at the campsite. Add salami, cheese, or garbanzo beans to make it even more filling.

Tuna white bean salad with cherry tomatoes in a bowl.

Cherry Tomato and White Bean Salad

Toss cherry tomatoes and white beans with a simple dressing for an easy salad. Want some extra protein? Make this Tuna White Bean & Tomato Salad for a more substantial meal.

Nicoise salad with sliced eggs, tuna, tomatoes, and greens on a plate.

Niçoise Salad

Niçoise salad might not be on your camping menu already, but it turns out it’s super camp-friendly! Hard-boil eggs and lightly steam some green beans at home, then at camp, toss them together with olives, canned tuna, and greens. Dress it with a vinaigrette of olive oil, white wine vinegar, Dijon mustard, and a touch of honey.

A while bowl of panzanella with torn bread, sliced peaches, tomatoes and cheese

Peach and Tomato Panzanella

Panzanella is a filling salad made from crusty bread (perfect if your favorite part of a salad is croutons!). We’re all about the summery vibes of Peach and Tomato Panzanella , and when the seasons shift, this Fall Panzanella with apples and a maple-mustard vinaigrette hits just right.

Layer canned black beans, tomatoes, corn, lettuce, cheese, and avocado for a deconstructed taco salad. Add a cilantro dressing and tortilla chips for crunch.

Three bean salad in a bowl.

Three Bean Salad

This 3 Bean Salad uses canned chickpeas, cannellini beans, and kidney beans for a high-protein, no-cook camping meal. Tossed with a simple, sweet, and tangy dressing, it hits all the right notes!

Lentils and chopped veggies in a bowl.

Lentil Salad

This Lentil Salad is a great make-ahead meal that will require zero cooking at camp! It’s one that just gets better after a day or two, once the lemony dressing really gets a chance to mingle with the lentils.

Coleslaw in a yellow dish.

Easy Coleslaw

Mix shredded cabbage and carrots with a creamy dressing for a quick and easy coleslaw . This is a great side dish for all kinds of meals!

Potato salad in a red enamel bowl

Potato Salad

Our favorite potato salad recipe can (and should!) be made at home before your trip, so it’s ready to add to any meal.

Fruit salad with berries, grapes, kiwi, and pineapple in a bowl.

Fruit Salad

Fruit salad is a great addition to lunch and dinner, especially when paired with sandwiches, wraps, or a cheese plate. Use your favorite fruit– we love this one with summer berries, watermelon, mango, and pineapple!

No cook desserts?! You bet! With a little prep before your trip, desserts don’t have to be left off the menu if you aren’t cooking at the campsite.

Vanilla ice cream in a bag.

Ice Cream in a Bag

Ice cream in a bag is the ultimate no-cook camping dessert. This is a fun activity to keep the kids occupied, and the result is delicious ice cream, made right at camp in about 20 minutes. Serve it with fruit, or with one of these s’mores cookies. ????????

S’mores cookies on a blue plate with marshmallows and a hot drink in the background.

S’mores Cookies

You won’t miss the campfire with these s’mores cookies ! Bake up a batch before your trip and enjoy the taste of this quintessential camping dessert.

Cheesecake berry parfaits in a glass cup.

Cheesecake Berry Parfaits

Try these cheesecake berry parfaits for dessert! You can prep the cheesecake portion at home and place it in a plastic zip-top bag. When ready to use, snip a corner off and squeeze the whipped topping out into cups, layering it with the berries.

Rice Krispies Treats topped with toasted marshmallows.

Rocky Road Rice Krispie Treats

Rocky Road Rice Krispie Treats are a fun way to make a s’mores-inspired dessert at home before your trip, so you can enjoy toasty marshmallows and chocolate even when you can’t have a campfire.

The ultimate guide to car camping

Car camping is an affordable, low-barrier way to enjoy the great outdoors—here's what you need to know to get started

By Madeleine Balestrier

There are as many different ways to camp as there are campers—from glamping to overlanding and backpacking, you can personalize your experience in the outdoors. If you’re new to camping or looking for a new way to get outside, consider car camping.

Related 20 overlanding essentials: Gear and gadgets for the ultimate off-road camping adventure

How is car camping different from tent camping? It’s simple—you sleep in your car instead of a tent. Car camping is a low-barrier and comfortable way to enjoy the outdoors without investing in expensive camping gear. But even when car camping, you can still choose to pull up to a campground and set up a tent.

a view of red rocks and water from the back of an open hatchback door

One of the many advantages of car camping is your ability to choose how, when, and where you sleep. This includes stealth camping. Similar to boondocking , stealth car camping is free camping where you sleep in your car without drawing attention to yourself. You can stealth camp in wild and urban areas—but be wary of local laws and stay safe.

Are you ready to watch the sunrise over the mountains from your car window? Or pull over to sleep whenever you feel like it on a long road trip?

How to get started car camping

One of the most fun parts about car camping is researching all the cool ways people do it and finding out what works best for you. YouTube is a valuable resource in learning how to set up your vehicle with whatever space you may have.

Visiting and supporting local gear stores will help you learn about the gear you may need, like a camp stove.

Joining Facebook groups and Reddit forums gives you access to people within the car camping community. They also offer used gear deals and answers to questions you didn’t know you had.

Buy and outfit your car

Your vehicle is the most important part of car camping. A car you already own will most likely suffice for your car camping needs. Just make sure it’s reliable and spacious enough for you to sleep and store gear.

You’ll need appropriate gear for camping, roadside essentials, and anything else you intend to use outside, like a hiking pack, running shoes, or fishing gear.

Explore local

Before you start planning a cross-country itinerary, consider using your first car camping trip as an opportunity to learn more about your local area. Start in a nearby park or campground. State parks are a good choice as they offer activities, amenities, and other resources to help ease you into a new kind of camping.

How to pick a car for camping

What makes a vehicle ideal for car camping? The best cars to sleep in have all-wheel drive or four-wheel drive capabilities. You should look for a vehicle with plenty of cargo space and weight capacity.

The best vehicle to sleep in is one that’s reliable, safe, and secure on and off the road. It’s also worth considering vehicles with good gas mileage or even electric cars, which are becoming more popular for car camping .

Here are some popular models for car camping:

  • Jeep Wrangler
  • Subaru Forester
  • Subaru Outback
  • Toyota 4Runner
  • Hyundai Kona Electric

Regardless of what vehicle you drive, don’t let it stop you from car camping. Even a small car like a Toyota Prius can be suitable with the right setup.

Car camping essentials

Car camping essentials vary widely based on the person, weather, and destination, but here is a list of necessities to get you started.

Coolers are not only crucial for preserving food but they also can be used as a table, camp chair, or beer fridge. Features to look for in a cooler are ice life, insulation, durability, and size.  Look to Yeti , Pelican , and Canyon Coolers , which offer viable options depending on your needs and budget.

You’ll quickly find that navigating around the campground by phone flashlight or firelight won’t cut it. It’s worth investing in lighting for utility and ambiance purposes. Headlamps, lanterns, or even solar string lights will do the trick.

Organization is key for keeping everything orderly while car camping in a small space. Invest in inexpensive bins to separate your kitchen supplies, toiletries, clothing, outdoor gear, and other belongings. You can even designate areas of your car for specific items so you can quickly find, pack, and unpack everything you need.

a green hatchback car with its trunk open with a bed setup in the back

Sleeping pad

Aside from the vehicle, your sleep system is crucial. There are several ways to approach how you want to set up your car for sleeping. Do you want a system that easily folds up for day use? Are you traveling solo or with a partner? You can even build a sleeping platform to create more space and organization.

To keep things simple, start by investing in a quality sleeping pad. A sleeping pad can be anything from a self-inflating pad to a luxurious mattress topper.

Other items to consider for your sleep system are pillows, sleeping bags, blankets, and quilts. You may also want to bring a tent for nights when you want to switch things up.

A variety of stoves work for car camping. A popular and affordable option is the classic two-burner Coleman stove . If you’re traveling solo, a backpacking stove like the MSR PocketRocket is sufficient enough and saves space. Other items to add to your camp kitchen are a cast iron skillet, sharp knife, camp sink, utensils, and a folding table.

Water storage

You’ll need water for drinking, cleaning, and washing. Always have plenty of water in a storage container. If you know you will be camping near water sources, consider investing in a water filter .

Car camping tips and tricks

  • Crack open opposite windows when you sleep for a cross breeze and to avoid moisture build-up in the car.
  • Purchase a GPS and satellite communicator for off-the-grid contact, and let someone know your plans.
  • Boil water, pour it into a heat-safe water bottle, and place it in your sleeping bag for more warmth on cold nights.
  • Bring pre-packaged foods, like overnight oats or pancakes, or plan one-pot recipes for when you need an easy meal with minimal cleanup.
  • Carry cash for local shops and campgrounds that might not accept credit cards.
  • Download maps, movies, music, and podcasts to make sure you can access them even without cell phone service.

How to plan a car camping trip

Traveling on a whim without a plan can be freeing, but for beginner car campers, plan your trip ahead of time. This will ease stress and help avoid some unforeseeable circumstances.

Here is a list of apps and websites to help plan a car camping trip:

  • Roadtrippers features everything from campgrounds to things to do, places to eat, and road services along the way.
  • Campendium helps you find places to camp, with in-depth reviews from other Campendium users. The app features boondocking sites, free campgrounds, RV parks, and more.
  • iOverlander features places to camp off-the-beaten-path. It’s useful in finding places to stealth camp in urban places, like Walmart and Cracker Barrel.
  • Overnight RV Parking is another resource for finding stealth camping options.
  • Recreation.gov is a great resource for finding federal campgrounds, like Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and U.S. Forest Service sites. You can also make reservations through this site.
  • GasBuddy is an app to help you find the cheapest gas on your road trip.

Other resources that are popular with car campers include Google Maps and AllTrails. It’s also worth checking with gear stores in your destination as these will often share local recommendations and current conditions.

To comfortably camp in your car, start by investing in a sleep setup, review local ordinances if stealth camping, and understand your vehicle’s safety precautions.

To keep your car cool while camping, you can make or purchase insulation shades, sleep with opposite windows cracked open for a cross breeze, and use a battery-powered fan.

You can legally sleep in your car in campgrounds, select businesses, some rest stops, visitor centers, BLM Land, and other places across the U.S. For specifics to your area, utilize Overnight RV Parking or the other popular car camping apps and websites listed above.

It’s safe to leave your car windows shut when you sleep in your car as long as the engine is off, but you’ll most likely be more comfortable if you leave your windows open slightly (depending on the climate).

The safest place to sleep in your car is in legal car camping areas, whether that’s a campground, BLM land, big box store, rest stop, or a visitor center.

There are several ways to cover a window while sleeping in a car. You can buy window covers or curtains or buy a roll of Reflectix (insulation) material and make your own window covers.

Car camping can be staying at or near a trailhead before spending a few days hiking in the backcountry. It can be pulling into a new town late at night or waking up to a spectacular view on public lands.

Related How to find a safe place to park your RV or van for the night

It can also be a way to save money during a cross-country road trip. It gives you the flexibility to sleep wherever you want because you have everything you need in your car. Car camping is just another vehicle, literally and figuratively, for an adventure into the outdoors.

State Park Stories

Plan a lost river state park camping trip.

Embark on a camping adventure where you can truly get lost in nature. Set in the wooded mountains of Hardy County in West Virginia’s Eastern Panhandle, Lost River State Park delivers stunning mountain views and a generous offering of recreational activities.

camping trip on youtube

Backpack Camping

Lost River offers a camping experience like no other. If it’s seclusion you seek, you’re in for a treat. Load up your backpack and set off on a 1.5-mile  hike to the top of Big Ridge Mountain. There, you’ll find two primitive campsites, one of which is horse-friendly. You’ll have access to a public shelter, campfire ring, picnic table and latrines.

For the ultimate primitive camping experience, a renovated ranger cabin is also located atop Big Ridge Mountain and is accessible via a 2-mile hike. The camper-style cabin includes firewood, gas lighting, a wood-burning cookstove and a refrigerator. You’ll need to pack in food, water and bedding. It’s truly a pioneer experience!

Traditional Camping

For those who prefer something a little less off the grid, three campsites near the ballpark can be rented as a group area. Campers have access to a fire ring, picnic table and public shelter. Restrooms are located nearby and showers are available during swimming pool hours.

Cozy Cabins

Even if camping isn’t your thing, you can still enjoy an overnight stay in one of the park’s 25 Legacy, Classic or Vacation cabins. Amenities include water and electricity, fully equipped kitchens, bathrooms and showers, heating and air conditioning. There is nothing better than cuddling up after a day of adventure in a cozy cabin.

Lost River State Park Cabin

Take a Hike… and More!

Whether camping out or snuggled up in a cabin, you’ll want to get out to enjoy all of the recreational offerings at Lost River. The park’s 23 miles of hiking trails – many of which are also open to mountain bikers – offer an unparalleled opportunity to study nature. One especially rewarding trail, Millers Rock, leads to Cranny Crow overlook with commanding views of five counties from an elevation of 3,200 feet.

Unwind from your hike at the park’s swimming pool, open Memorial Day to Labor Day. Visitors  also have access to a wide range of recreational offerings, including tennis courts, a volleyball court, archery range, badminton and horseshoes.

Get a different perspective of the trails via a guided horseback ride. Hidden Trails Stables operates seasonally within the park. Riders are encouraged to book in advance. Or… you can even bring your own horse! Private riding is available year-round after registering at the park office.

Explore the Area

Plan a long camping trip so you’ll have time to get out and explore an area that’s awash with the natural beauty of the Monongahela National Forest.
