Kozhikode has a long recorded history according to which the Arab merchants have traded with this shore for as early as the 7 th century. Later the Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama set foot on Indian soil at Kappad in 1493 and opened a trading route between Europe and Malabar.

It was once the capital of the Samoothiris (Zamorins) of Calicut and later also became the capital of the Malabar district under the British rule. In 2012, Kozhikode was named the “City of Sculptures” or “Shilpa Nagaram” due to the number of architectural sculptures located in various parts of the city.

The land of rich traditions and cultures, Kozhikode is the home to the folk songs and ballads known as “Vadakkan Pattukal” which celebrate the valor and might of “Kalarippayattu” and its champions. The land and the lives of its people are also deeply entwined with Ghazals, Hindusthani music and football.

Kozhikode is famous for its cuisine which includes the Kozhikkodan biriyani, chattippathiri, irachippathiri, pazham nirachathu, unnakkaya, sulaimani etc. which are mouthwatering dishes indigenous to the land.

Kozhikode is a land of amazing food, warm people and a long history to boast of and hence definitely finds a place in the tourism map of Kerala.

Popular Questions About Kozhikode (Calicut)

Best time to visit kozhikode (calicut).

Plan your trip during best season to experience the best of this stunning destination

Kozhikode is the best of all worlds, with beach glamour, cultural and historical landmarks, and bountiful nature in and around the city. It is undoubtedly an all-weather destination, whether you want to sightsee, lounge at the beach, or engage in outdoor adventures. Choose your timing based on the type of holiday you’re after, and enjoy this historical city to the fullest!

The monsoon season spans from June through to October. Torrential rain and widespread flooding make this an imprudent time to undertake outdoor adventure activities, but it’s the perfect period to take advantage of off-season prices and explore the cultural delights of Kozhikode. The city is teeming with vibrant hues of green, thriving flowers, and vociferous wildlife.

September, at the tail end of the monsoon season, is the ideal time to visit. Prices are still low, but the mountains, forests and waterfalls are at the peak of their luscious green beauty.

Furthermore, around the August/September period, Keralites celebrate the Onam Harvest Festival with Snake Boat Races, a tradition dating back to the time when paddy-field workers used to show off their skills in the water as they harvested the rice. Today, villagers emulate them by competing against each other in beautifully handcrafted boats.

The weather is cooler and drier between October and February. While this is the perfect time to visit beaches, beware of the peak season prices from December to January, as well as larger crowds. If Kozhikode is not your principal beach destination, you can avoid it during these months. The Vadakara and Shivatri festivals are celebrated during this season with much enthusiasm and zest.

Between March and May, Kerala’s summer hits its peak, but the weather remains mild and humid in Kozhikode. Touring around the city visiting the many sites will probably still be comfortable, and this is the ideal time for bird watching in the many parks. The Pooram, Kaliatta Mahotasavam and Memunda festivals are celebrated in this period.

How to Reach Kozhikode (Calicut)

Despite being the largest city in northern Kerala, Kozhikode remains a serene coastal port overflowing with verdant greenery, languid beaches, and vibrant cultural history.

A locus of trade since the 7th century, the Arab, Portuguese, British, French, and Danish used the ports of Kozhikode to control and monitor textile trade. Influences of its trade routes are still a major driving factor for Kozhikode tourism.

Kozhikode is well connected to all the major cities in India and abroad by frequent traffic of flights, trains, and buses.

calicut tourist activities

Kozhikode has a well-equipped international airport. Calicut International Airport has regular flights that connects it to the Gulf countries as well as major cities in India like Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Coimbatore, and Hyderabad. From the airport, you can jump on a bus, avail of pre-booked taxi services, or hail a cab to your final destination.

calicut tourist activities

The train station at Kozhikode, enjoying a conveniently central location near the famous Mananchira Square, is well-connected to most major cities throughout India including Chennai, Bangalore, and Mumbai. Trains are one of the most convenient and comfortable ways to travel around Kerala, and India in general. Buy your tickets online or at the train station, sit back, and enjoy a scenic trip through the breathtaking landscapes of Kerala and Kozhikode.

calicut tourist activities

Kozhikode also has a long-distance bus station, connecting the city to local towns and villages as well as major cities throughout the country. The state-owned KSRTC buses run regularly to and from Kozhikode and private coaches can also be arranged. Traveling by state-run buses and local transport is the most economical and convenient way to get around Kerala. The flip side is that buses tend to get crowded and uncomfortable if you’re traveling with a lot of luggage in Kerala's tropical weather.

12 Best Tourist Places in Kozhikode (Calicut)

Kozhikode is a beautiful coastal town, on the Malabar coast of India, in the state of Kerala. Also known as Calicut, the town is a pristine haven in nature, filled with lush greenery, tranquil beaches, and historical forts. It is known for having one of the most beautiful backwaters of Kerala and serves as a charming weekend getaway for the locals and nearby travellers. And for the beach lovers, the clean and untouched beaches of the city are truly irresistible. From stunning waterfalls to religious places, pristine beaches and natural beauty all around, Kozhikode is surely one place you wouldn’t want to miss on your Kerala tour package .

It is a peaceful city with the vast Arabian Sea on the west and the peaks of Wayanad hill on the east. If history is to be believed, Vasco-da-Gama first set his foot in India at Kozhikode when the Spice Route was established. This is the reason Kozhikode, or Calicut, was earlier known by yet another name, the City of Spices. The city also served as a mighty seaport in the world where traders from Arabia, China, and Africa once converged. With such a rich history it should come as no surprise that there is an abundance of things to do in Calicut, as well as some of the best places to visit in Kerala .

Best Tourist Places In Kozhikode

With so many places to see in Kozhikode, a visit to this famous city is always a memorable one. Here are 12 of the best tourist places in Kozhikode that you should not miss on your trip to the city.

Beypore is one of the best places in Kozhikode to visit if you are someone who has a great interest in learning about the rich history of the place. Best Time To Visit Kozhikode

Today, Kozhikode is the third-largest city of Kerala and draws tourists throughout the year due to its vast tourist attractions and pleasant weather. The best time to visit the beautiful places in Kozhikode is during the months of October to March. The weather during these months is pleasant and habitable for tourists, as compared to other months.

Summers in the city are too hot and humid, with temperatures ranging between 37 and 39 degrees Celsius. Monsoon brings heavy rains, which although cools down the soaring temperatures, might hinder tourists activities. This is also the time to experience several festivals and fairs of the city. Winter months are the most favourable for vacations in the city of Kozhikode and sightseeing as the climate remains quite pleasant during this time, and the minimum temperature dips up to 15 degrees Celsius on some days.

Good food, friendly people and great opportunities to explore and enjoy God’s own country, that’s Kozhikode in a nutshell. The city is not just a great spot to spend time with your friends and family but is also a splendid honeymoon destination where you can spend a great time with your better half. ‘Exchange a coin and you make no difference but exchange a thought and you can change the world.’ Hi! I’m Veena Patil... Fortunate enough to have answered my calling some 35 years ago and content enough to be in this business of delivering happiness almost all my life. Tourism indeed moulds you into a minimalist... Memories are probably our only possession. And memories are all about sharing experiences, ideas and thoughts. Life is simple, but it becomes easy when we share. Places and people are two things that interest me the most. While places have taken care of themselves, here’s my podcast, which I consider to be a great platform, through which I can share some interesting stories I live and love on a daily basis with all you wonderful people out there. I hope you enjoy the journey... Let’s go, celebrate life!

The Arab influence caused many locals to become Muslims; as a result the city is dotted with  mosques. It is said that the name Calicut came from the hand woven cloth calico which was made here.  In local language t he city is called Kozhikode.

There are a number of good hotels in the city, so you can spend a couple of days visiting some of the nearby attractions. Here are 6 must see tourist places around Calicut city.

The city nestles on the coast of the Arabian Sea. It is about 1.2 m above sea level. The coastline extends  to a length of 15 km. This forms the heart of the city. The name comes from the large pool of clear water bound by laterite stone steps built by Manavedan Raja  one of the earlier Zamorins.
