Planning a trip to costa rica: the pura vida guide.

Katie

Ready to zip-line through lush canopies or relax on pristine beaches? Our essential guide to planning a trip to Costa Rica covers everything from volcanic peaks to tropical retreats, ensuring your journey is as exhilarating as the destination itself.

The Arenal Volcano underneath gradient skies in Costa Rica

Known for its “Pura Vida” lifestyle and stunning biodiversity, Costa Rica is a country where over a quarter of its land is dedicated to conservation areas. That means planning a trip to Costa Rica is tantamount to stepping into a world where nature takes center stage, boasting five percent of the world’s biodiversity on just 0.03% of the earth’s surface.

But whether you’re a thrill-seeker or a nature lover, this country definitely promises you an adventure like no other.

Planning A Trip To Costa Rica: Knowing The Basics

When you’re planning a trip to Costa Rica, understanding a few key travel essentials can make your journey as smooth as the country’s famous coffee.

First, take note that visitors from the U.S., Canada, and most European countries do not require a visa for stays of up to 90 days. However, a passport valid for at least six months post-visit is necessary.a requisite.

For the best airfare, we encourage you to consider booking your flights during the shoulder seasons of May to June or September to November. Not only do these periods let you avoid the tourist rush, but they also coincide with the country’s best weather (just before or right after the rainy season).

And for the best times to visit? December to April boasts the driest weather, which is arguably perfect for exploring those sprawling beaches and lush rainforests.

However, if you’re a fan of verdant landscapes and don’t mind a bit of rain, visiting during the green season (May to November) can be a cheaper and quieter alternative.

Planning A Trip To Costa Rica: Creating Your Itinerary

Crafting the perfect itinerary for your trip to Costa Rica is similar to mixing your ideal tropical cocktail: a little bit of adventure, a splash of relaxation, and a twist of the unexpected!

Kick things off in Costa Rica’s bustling capital, San José , with its rich history and lively markets. It’s truly the perfect gateway to the country’s natural wonders.

Head next to Arenal Volcano National Park , where you can hike through lava fields and soak in natural hot springs. And for an adrenaline boost, don’t miss out on zip-lining through the Monteverde Cloud Forest , where the treetops are alive with exotic birds and howler monkeys.

Of course, no trip to Costa Rica is complete without experiencing its stunning beaches . With that, remember that Tamarindo is great for surfing and sunsets, while the more secluded beaches like Montezuma offer tranquility and unspoiled beauty. Whether you want to go snorkeling or just relax on the white sands, it’s your call. After all, soaking up the Costa Rican sun is definitely where the most fun happens.

Meanwhile, wildlife enthusiasts should venture into Tortuguero National Park to witness sea turtles nesting on the beach or explore the dense jungles of Corcovado. Known as the “Little Amazon,” its waterways are best explored by boat, offering glimpses of diverse bird species and the occasional crocodile.

Finally, wrap up your trip with a visit to the lush landscapes of the Osa Peninsula , where you can disconnect and reflect on the natural beauty around you.

Keep in mind that planning a trip to Costa Rica is all about embracing the pura vida lifestyle— so we encourage you to take your time, explore freely, and let the country’s charm do the rest.

Where To Stay In Costa Rica

Choosing where to stay in Costa Rica can define your travel experience.

Here are some top recommendations to help you narrow down your options:

For a taste of local culture and accessibility, San José offers a range of hotels from luxury to budget-friendly, ideal for your first or last night in the country. It’s a great launching pad for day trips with numerous dining and entertainment options.

If you’re a nature lover, Monteverde’s eco-lodges provide a direct connection to the cloud forest, allowing you to wake up surrounded by the sounds of wildlife. Similarly, the cabins around Arenal Volcano offer stunning views and are perfect for those seeking adventure right outside their door.

On the other hand, beachgoers might prefer the laid-back vibe of Tamarindo or the luxurious resorts of Manuel Antonio , where comfort meets the ocean breeze. These areas boast a variety of beachfront hotels and vacation rentals that cater to all tastes and budgets.

Lastly, for a truly unique experience, consider staying in one of Tortuguero’s remote lodges, which are accessible only by boat or plane. There, you can have an immersive experience in a lush, wildlife-rich area that’s truly one for the books!.

Irish Wanderlust: Your Guide to Planning the Perfect Trip

Dažďové pralesy striedajú sopky, obrovské vodopády, kávové plantáže, národné parky a nekonečné divoké pláže.

Prales a sopky

V NP Monteverde obdivujeme tajomný mlžný les a ochutnávame prvotriednu kostarickú kávu.

Takže aj my si požičiavame surfy a ideme si to skúsiť.

Trekovanie cez pralesy a národné parky s divokými zvieratami, surfovanie a šnorchlovanie pri koralových útesoch s množstvom rýb, rají a baby sharkov.

ck pura vida travel

¡Pura Vida! Rejuvenate Your Senses with These Costa Rican Experiences

I f you’re looking to immerse yourself in a country that is as refreshing as it is tranquil, Costa Rica should be your next must-visit destination. Known for its ‘Pura Vida’ lifestyle, which translates to ‘pure life,’ this Central American destination offers experiences that speak to the soul and enliven the senses.

Whether you’re making your way through lush rainforests , living your best life soaking in hot springs, or savoring world-class coffee, Costa Rica is all about enjoyment. Pura Vida isn’t just a tagline but it’s a lifestyle, emphasizing a full-bodied appreciation of the simple joys of life. This Central American country is a sensory feast that will leave you yearning for more.

The Aroma of Freshly Brewed Costa Rican Coffee

Costa Rica and coffee are synonymous. The country’s lush landscapes are ideal growing conditions for some of the finest beans in the world. Visit Tierra Amiga in San Marcos of Tarrazu with Intrepid Travel to experience an ecological farm where coffee is organically produced from seed to cup. You’ll learn how coffee is harvested, roasted, and brewed to perfection. The rich aroma as you sip fresh coffee while overlooking the farm is an experience you can’t replicate.

The Thrill of Zip-lining

If you’re an adrenaline junkie, ziplining through the jungles offers an unmatched thrill. Feel your heart race as you fly through the air, looking down at the lush forest below. With the wind in your face and an unbeatable panoramic view, this is an adventure lover’s paradise.

The Quiet of a Rainforest Canopy Walk

Take a hike through Costa Rica’s national parks, like Monteverde and Manuel Antonio. While at Monteverde, experience venturing onto a canopy walkway suspended above the forest floor. Enjoy a guided hike at Manuel Antonio and watch for the country’s abundant wildlife such as monkeys, sloths, hundreds of birds and armadillos. This serene experience is the form of therapy you never knew you needed.

Surfing in the Pacific

Whether you’re an avid surfer or a novice, Costa Rica’s waves are perfect for everyone. Head to Jaco Beach or Tamarindo, where surf schools allow you to ride waves that suit your skill level. The exhilarating feeling of conquering a wave as the ocean spray hits your face is intoxicating. If you’re not into surfing , spend the day relaxing on the beautiful white sand beaches.

A Dip in Thermal Springs

Unwind at one of the many thermal springs in the country. Arenal, a breathtaking active volcano, provides the perfect backdrop for several hot springs resorts. Geothermal forces naturally heat the warm water. Thermal springs are rich in minerals to rejuvenate your skin and soothe your muscles. This is the perfect wellness activity if you deal with skin ailments like psoriasis or eczema.

Local Culinary Delights

Indulge your tastebuds with traditional Costa Rican cuisine. Casado, a classic dish combining rice, beans, plantains, and your choice of meat or fish, is a simple yet comforting meal. Don’t skip out on freshly made ceviche, prepared using the catch of the day and marinated in citrus juices. It’s a culinary journey representing the essence of ‘Pura Vida.’ Head to the community of Juanilama with Intrepid Travel , where a cooking class is led by local women. You’ll be able to indulge in local dishes like picadillos, tortillas, enyucados, and more.

Dance to the Rhythms of Latin America

No trip to Costa Rica would be complete without immersing yourself in its vibrant culture. Dance to the beats of salsa, merengue, or bachata at a local club or even on a beach under the stars. The energy is infectious and you’ll leave with a rhythm that embodies ‘Pura Vida.’

Zdraví a očkování

Mobilní telefony a internet

Experiences

From sun, surf and beach hammocks to forest trails and waterfalls, costa rica has a little bit of everything….

ck pura vida travel

A true marvel if not miracle of nature, the crescent shaped beach of Uvita cradles this warm water bay featuring the awe-inspiring ‘whale’s tail’, a stunning representation of the gentle giants’ anatomy remarkably etched into the pristine coastline. If this wasn’t enough, the tail is part of the Ballena National Marine Park which plays host to migrating humpback whales year-round!

For decades, Sarapiqui and Tortuguero have been birding hotspots – captivating beginner and expert alike. Keel-billed Toucans, Great Green Macaws, Wood Thrushes, Grey-necked Wood Rails, Sun bitterns and Violet Crowned Woodnymphs are just a few of the birds that inhabit the rainforest and reserves in the region. We work with a number of local ecolodges to take care of the details while you focus on the birds!

Caño Island is an amazing marine biological reserve located approximately 50 km from the shore with virgin blue waters making it the perfect tropical paradise for snorkelers and divers. Fantastic underwater visibility affords the opportunity to observe and swim alongside sea turtles, stingrays, manta rays, moray eels, barracudas, tuna, snapper, parrot fish, puffers, and more. Marine life is also abundant in the general outliers of the island and you can see white tipped reef sharks, and occasionally whale sharks and humpback whales.

Guanacaste harbours miles of pristine palm-fringed coastline producing some of the most consistent, forgiving and fun waves on the planet. Paired with warm waters year-round and world class surf schools, Costa Rica is the perfect place to take your first lesson or continue your chase for the ride of a lifetime. Your wave is waiting!

As the terrain of the northern highlands descends into the central plains so do the rivers, pouring out magnificent displays of power and beauty in the form of majestic waterfalls. From the famous falls of La Fortuna to the jaw-dropping del Toro, discover some of Costa Rica’s best-kept secrets with spectacular views from above and refreshing pools below…

The cloud forest of San Gerardo de Dota often plays second fiddle to the world famous Monteverde, however the most avid of bird watchers will tell you that this is the place to see some of Costa Rica’s finest feathered friends, including the Resplendent Quetzal! The region is less visited and less crowded than its northern neighbour making it ideal for the peace and quiet valued by birds and watchers alike.

Home to over 5000 species of plants, more than 300 species of birds, and over 100 species of mammals including deer, peccary, coatis, armadillos, anteaters, and sloths the famed Corcovado National Park is an absolute dream for nature lovers. Here you can encounter all four species of Costa Rican monkeys including howler, white face capuchin, spider and the endangered squirrel monkey, rarely seen together outside of Osa. Those who are patient, reverent, and a little lucky may encounter the elusive Baird's tapir or one of Corcovado's resident big cats: jaguarundi, margay, ocelot, puma or even a jaguar!

Meet with local cooks, learn about traditional ingredients and sample foods that represent the diversity of the culinary heritage of the region on this tour that will have you fall in love with the people and culture of Costa Rica’s Caribbean Coast by way of your taste buds and belly!

Just south of the town of Manzanillo and stretching all the way down to the border of Panama is Gandoca Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge. This postcard-worthy stretch of coast is a paradise of beaches, coves, islands, and an offshore coral reef backed by thick rainforest. Sea turtles (nesting between March and July), dolphins, manatees, and crocodiles can all be found at the reserve. With such rich underwater biodiversity, the Gandoca Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge is considered by many to be the best snorkeling and diving spot on the Caribbean Coast.

The Golfo Dulce is one of only four tropical fjord-like estuaries in the whole world. These waters have been identified by National Geographic as one of the ocean’s 20 wildest places and recognized by Mission Blue as an exceptional ecosystem for marine biodiversity. Take a boat trip, paddle board, kayak, and snorkel in these amazing warm waters where dolphins and whales swim wild and free by day and at night algae glow creating one of the most incredible bioluminescence spectacles Earth can offer.

Guanacaste is known for its spectacular beaches, but some are harder to find than others. It’s time to wander off the beaten path on a quest to reveal some of these best kept secret shores. We’ve scoured the coastline to find a series of hidden gems, secluded and virtually untouched white sand bays and pristine inlets that are yours for taking if you’re up for a bit of adventure and exploration!

Costa Rica's beaches are home to massive nesting sea turtle populations. Come face-to-face with these ancient creatures as they return to the same beaches where they were born to lay their eggs or watch as hatchlings emerge from the sand to attempt their hazardous journey back to the ocean. These events are magical, awe-inspiring, and life-changing, an experience you won’t soon forget.

Hazy mist, trailing foliage, and the mysterious call of rare birds sounds like something from a fantasy or adventure film, but this dream world can be found in the cloud forests of Monteverde where the sky essentially comes down to the forest, enabling you to actually take a walk through the clouds.

Experience the whitewater magic of the Pacuare River as you discover the excitement of thrilling rapids coursing through rugged canyons and verdant tropical rainforests on one of the most exotic and scenic rivers in the world. This adrenaline-pumping excursion takes you through class-III and -IV rapids, past spectacular landscapes, under tumbling cascades, and all the way to the town of Siquirres.

Once again, the north Pacific coast of the country gets all the glory, while the southern shores await the avid explorer in search of uncrowded waves breaking along wild palm-fringed beaches. The towns of Dominical, Uvita, Matapalo all the way down to Pavones offer something for everyone whether you’re taking your first lesson or in search of the wave of a lifetime!

Yoga class in Costa Rica is unlike any other! With breath taking views of mountains and volcanoes set in the midst of tropical rain forest or on the most pristine beaches, classes are led by experienced instructors giving students an opportunity connect with breath, relax the body, open the mind and find balance so you can be ready for whatever your next adventure holds.

From the iconic Arenal and crater lake of Cerro Chato to prehistoric sulfur springs, steam vents, and boiling mud pots of Rincón de la Vieja along with the turquoise blue waters of Tenorio, follow the ring of fire through Costa Rica's Northern region as you come face to face with these geological giants.

A journey of unsurpassed beauty, jungle vegetation, and exploding whitewater, rafting on the Savegre is perfect for the adventuresome beginner and experienced rafter with Class II and III adrenaline-filled rapids. The Savegre River is a magnificent stretch of whitewater that begins its course by winding out of a sparsely inhabited valley in the mountains. Named one of the most pristine rivers in Central America, the Savegre is full of incredible scenery at every turn.

14+ Costa Rican Cocktails To Drink Right Now

This post may contain affiliate links.

What is better than watching a sunset in the tropics with a delicious beverage in your hand? Well, I’d argue: nothing. This guide to Costa Rican cocktails will help you decide the best drinks to order on vacation. Or, if you are home, you can recreate them with my recipes.

In this post, I’ve rounded up the top Costa Rican cocktails. If you prefer Costa Rican non-alcoholic drinks, check out our Costa Rican Drink recipes guide . If you are interested in ayahuasca, make sure to check out our ayahuasca in Costa Rica guide. Want Costa Rican microbrews ? I’ve also got you covered

About consuming Costa Rican cocktails. Costa Rica’s drinking age is 18, and you can drink publically- please do it responsibly. Drunk driving carries very stiff penalties, so make sure you are sober before you get behind the wheel- especially of a rental car .

Costa Ricans enjoy alcoholic beverages as much as anyone, and especially on the beach you’ll find “ticos” drinking beer while listening to music. Drinking responsibly is not stigmatized in Costa Rica, so feel free to enjoy your drinks in the land of pura vida!

Note: You can find almost all of the liquors listed in grocery stores for a fraction of the cost at the bars. This makes it easy to recreate delicious drinks in your hotel or vacation rental. Another trick I have found is to grab the liquor you want at the Duty-Free in the airport on the way into the country.

Costa Rican Beer

Beer is king in Costa Rica. It’s by far the most popular alcoholic drink, and you can buy a beer in even the very most remote places. National beers are all produced in the same brewery, the largest in the country. It is called La Florida. Below, I list the most popular beers in Costa Rica.

Costa Rican nachos topped with a generous portion of pico de gallo.

Known as “ el aguila ” because of the prominent eagle on the label. The red and yellow logo has been plastered on almost every t-shirt, beer mug, hat, and keychain in the country, so you won’t have trouble finding it. This is bar far the most sold and consumed beer in the country.

You can find it anywhere- it’s the top drink. It’s a light lager akin to Bud Light or Red Stripe from Jamaica. Recently Imperial had a big push to export to the United States, and you can find it in liquor stores across the country.

Pilsen is Imperial’s little sister. It is the second most popular beer in the country. It is a bit more bitter than Imperial and has a slightly higher alcohol content. You’ll recognize the bottle by its distinct red and white label.

Bavaria is a slightly more expensive beer with several versions. There is Bavaria Light, Bavaria Gold, and Bavaria Masters. They all taste a bit like Imperial but a little bit lighter.

Rock Ice goes through an ice brewing process and is infused with a lime flavor. It is popular with the younger crowd as it kind of tastes like an alcoholic juice.

Craft Brews

You can find Costa Rican micro-breweries around the country that make craft beers. The majority of micro-breweries are in San Jose. You will also find canned craft beers in the beer section of liquor stores in larger cities in the country, or in beach towns where the breweries are located. Some popular craft beers include Lake Arenal Brewery (La Fortuna), Manada Coyote (San Ramon), and Papagayo Brewery near Liberia, Guanacaste.

Wine is not hugely popular in Costa Rica, but there is a sort of underground wine called contrabando . Contrabando (meaning contraband) is made from the poisonous “ reina de la noche ” (queen of the night) flower. Once fermented it is no longer poisonous.

But while no longer poisonous, contrabando wine is very strong and will make you drunk very quickly. If you go out in the sun while drinking it you can experience hallucinations. Needless to say, this is not a very easy wine to find, and it’s definitely not sold in grocery stores.

Liquors for Costa Rican Cocktails

There are two popular liquors made in Costa Rica- Cacique (known as guaro) and Ron Centenario. Cacique is the trademark liquor in Costa Rica.

Cacique Guaro

Cacique is made at the national brewing plant aptly known as the brand Cacique Guaro. It is located in the northern Central Valley.

Cacique is a sugar cane liquor. It’s a clear spirit similar to those of many other countries in Central America. It is often paired with Fresca soda in bars across the country. It also makes an appearance in the chiliguaro, pura vida, guaro sour and coco loco cocktails. (More on those below.) It is by far the most popular liquor in Costa Rica.

Centenario Rum

Centenario is also made right in Costa Rica and is the only rum made there. It comes in several ages- the 5-year being the most common.

This rum is often compared to the Flor de Caña made next door in Nicaragua. While there are lots of different rums throughout Central America and Latin America, Ron Centenario continues to be one of my favorites ever for Costa Rican cocktails.

Costa Rican Cocktails

If you are heading to any of the beach bars, you’ll want to try these cocktails. Many of the bars and resorts have huge lists of cocktail recipes, and not all are the same versions listed here. What you can be sure of is that there will be fresh fruits and fruit juice in all of your cocktails, due to the large number of different types of Costa Rican fruits in the country.

Chili Guaro or Chiliguaro

This drink mixes tomato juice, Cacique, and a shot of hot sauce. It’s served as a shot most often and can be requested at almost any bar. Sometimes it comes with a bit of Salsa Lizano (LINK) It’s one of the most popular drinks in the country.

This is a tropical take on a whiskey sour. Again, using the signature Cacique, this drink combines guaro, simple syrup, and a splash of club soda. It’s garnished with lime wedges and oh so delicious! This is a top drink to try in Costa Rica.

There are as many takes on the pura vida drink as there are ways to use the phrase (meaning pure life). It’s sort of like a Costa Rican rum punch. Of course, it incorporates the top liquor- Cacique. Additional ingredients include pineapple juice, orange juice, and lime juice.

Pina colada in a hollowed out pineapple with the beach in the background.

Piña Colada

The traditional Costa Rican piña colada combines fresh coconut cream (or coconut milk), juiced coconut, and Ron Centenario to round out one of the best cocktails on the planet. Costa Rica does the drink major justice with fresh ingredients. It’s a good option for someone trying cocktails for the first time.

Rum punch cocktail in glass with ice and umbrella.

Need I say more? This rum punch recipe is one of the most popular recipes on this website, and garnishing it with fresh mint makes it all the better.

The Coco Loco drink truly is crazy! You’ll use agua de pipa, which is the coconut water inside a green coconut. Break that coconut open, add Cacique guaro and stick a straw in the hole. This might be dubbed the national drink of Costa Rica- even without the guaro it’s delicious!
