California is known as the mecca of celebrity culture in the USA and in some ways, it is; this is where you’ll find Hollywood, after all! But there’s a lot more to this large American state than famous faces, film studios and the amusement parks that go with them. It’s also home to Silicon Valley, the global headquarters of many big tech companies. And don’t forget the iconic Golden Gate Bridge.

There’s also some fantastic natural beauty on offer in California. There are giant redwoods to see, deserts and rock formations, and fantastic beaches along the coast. It’s home to sweeping landscapes, vineyards, and a collection of cities that are as famous as the state itself: think San Francisco, Los Angeles, and San Diego. Packed full of culture and good food, the best places to visit in California are fascinating to explore.

20. Santa Cruz

Located on the northern shore of Monterey Bay, Santa Cruz lies just to the south of San Jose and San Francisco. Known for its beautiful beach boardwalk and counterculture scene, the city is a very pleasant place to spend some time, with lots of incredible scenery nearby.

Life in ‘Surf City’ revolves around its beaches and boardwalk, which attract everyone from families and students to hippies, surfers, and street performers. As such, there is a very youthful and bohemian feel about town, with watersports such as paddle boarding, sailing, and surfing to be enjoyed.

Besides its wonderful waterfront, Santa Cruz also has a fun and lively downtown home to a plethora of great restaurants, shops, and bars. In addition, the nearby Natural Bridges State Beach and Big Basin Redwoods State Park are both well worth visiting for their lovely nature trails and spectacular scenery.

19. Sonoma Valley

Part of the San Francisco Bay Area, Sonoma Valley lies just to the north of the city, not far from San Pablo Bay. Home to lovely rural landscapes, the fertile valley is renowned for its vineyards and wineries. It was actually here that California’s world-famous wine industry began.

Much more relaxed and laidback than the glitzy and glamorous Napa Valley, Sonoma Valley is a pleasant and picturesque place to visit. In the town of Sonoma, you can find a number of excellent restaurants serving up local delicacies, as well as tasting rooms where you can sample some of the region’s fine wines.

Scattered around the Valley of the Moon (as it is also known) are sprawling estates and quaint wineries. Hiking and cycling are popular pastimes while taking a balloon ride above Sonoma Valley allows you to bask in the splendid scenery below.

18. Santa Monica

Bordered on three sides by Los Angeles, Santa Monica is a laidback beachfront city that offers a welcome respite from sightseeing around the home of Hollywood. Developed as a seaside resort town in the early 20th century, SaMo has long been a popular tourist destination due to its sun, sea and sand.

Jutting out into the Pacific is the bustling Santa Monica Pier, which sports a huge Ferris Wheel and old-fashioned amusement park. While this is great fun for the whole family, plenty of other activities can be enjoyed along its expansive beachfront, such as swimming, volleyball, and surfing.

Besides its golden sands, Santa Monica has a thriving alternative scene for visitors to delve into, with little art galleries and street murals to be found at the Bergamot Station Arts Center. A wealth of great bars, restaurants, shops, and hotels are also scattered about town catering to every budget and clientele.

17. Palm Springs

Palm Springs is a year-round desert playground on Interstate 10, connecting the Los Angeles area with Arizona. Home to many celebrities over the decades, Palm Springs is a good place to golf in the wintertime when temperatures are cooler than in summer.

The city, once popular with college students on spring break, is known for its mid-20th century modern architecture featured in many homes and business buildings. This architectural style is celebrated annually with Modernism Week. Sonny Bono, half of the defunct Sonny and Cher singing duo, once served as major of this southern California city.

While the desert oasis city once attracted Hollywood movie stars in the 50s and 60s, Palm Springs now appeals to all kinds of tourists and travellers and is home to a sizeable retiree population. There’s hiking in the nearby desert and San Jacinto Mountains as well as a plethora of museums to explore.

16. Joshua Tree National Park

Lying to the east of Los Angeles at the point where the Colorado and Mojave Deserts meet, Joshua Tree National Park is home to incredible wilderness and spectacular scenery. Named after the distinctive tree-like Yuccas that dot its diverse desert landscapes, the park has long been popular with nature lovers and outdoor aficionados.

Exploring the national park’s mountains, canyons, and rock formations really is a treat, with plenty of scenic trails and climbing routes snaking through the rugged scenery. As two separate desert ecosystems lie within the park, there is lots of diverse fauna and flora on show. Coyotes, rattlesnakes, and golden eagles can all be spotted from time to time.

While hiking, rock climbing and camping are all popular, the park’s dramatic geography and odd-shaped Joshua Trees make for some incredible photos. Such is the majesty and mystique of the Mojave Desert that U2 famously named one of their best-selling albums, The Joshua Tree, after it.

15. Laguna Beach

Set in a very scenic spot along southern California’s Pacific coastline, Laguna Beach is a beautiful place to visit with a very Mediterranean look and feel. While it is home to lots of beautiful beaches and luxury resorts, the popular seaside resort city is particularly known for its thriving artistic community.

Gorgeous public sculptures and art galleries can be found around town, with quaint cottages and artistic-looking homes and houses dotted here and there. Every summer, it hosts many fantastic events, such as the Festival of Arts, Sawdust Festival, and Pageant of the Masters, where artists showcase their latest creations.

Laguna Beach itself is just as impressive as its many artworks. Secluded coves and golden sands line the rugged cliffs that tumble down to the Pacific. While its many trails and paths are perfect for hiking or cycling, its wild waters attract surfers, and there is some exceptional scuba diving to be had beneath the waves.

14. Anaheim-Disneyland

Part of the Los Angeles metropolitan area, Anaheim is known for one thing and one thing only: Disneyland. However, this does it a major injustice. Over the years, it has slowly grown into the largest city in Orange County and so has much more going for it.

Home to a diverse range of attractions, Anaheim has pockets of great bars, restaurants, and shops, with many of these to be found clustered around downtown. It’s also a great place to visit if you want to watch baseball or hockey; both the Anaheim Ducks and Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim are based here. In addition, it boasts a large convention center and hosts many events and competitions throughout the year.

Its main draw is admittedly Disneyland, which attracts millions of visitors every year with its exhilarating rides and plethora of entertainment opportunities. Fun for all of the family, the major tourist destination is home to shops, restaurants, and hotels, with another theme park and spa located within the resort.

13. Carmel-by-the-Sea

Located just to the south of Monterey Bay, Carmel-by-the-Sea lies along California’s Pacific Coast Highway in a very scenic spot. Surrounded by dramatic cliffs and verdant hills, the oceanside town has long been popular among artists, writers, and poets due to its spectacular natural setting.

The former artists’ colony has a very quaint look and feel; this is in large part due to its charming cottages and atmospheric old houses. Its rich artistic heritage is still on show in the numerous art galleries and studios dotted about town. Fine restaurants, cosy cafes, and boutique shops abound, and there are lots of lovely inns and B&Bs for visitors to stay at.

At the heart of the small town is the beautiful white-sand Carmel Beach which over the years has been replicated and reproduced in countless paintings and artworks. While it is often shrouded in mist, its sumptuous setting and fierce sunsets make it very popular among locals and out-of-towners alike.

12. Channel Islands

Strung out along southern California’s scenic coastline, the Channel Islands are a small archipelago of eight islands surrounded by the sparkling Pacific Ocean. Five of the Channel Islands lie within a national park of the same name that protects and preserves its sensitive ecosystems. With rugged canyons, jagged cliffs, and pristine beaches, they are a fantastic place to explore.

While two of the islands are inaccessible to citizens (as they are used by the US Navy), fishing, scuba diving, and sailing are permitted in their surrounding waters. The only inhabited island is Santa Catalina, home to the small town and village of Avalon and Two Harbors.

The island has been a tourist resort since the 1920s, with chewing gum magnate William Wrigley kicking off the tourism movement. Catalina Island is, however, also a popular day trip destination since it’s just 22 miles off the coast of Los Angeles.

It’s a good place to ride glass-bottom boat to explore reefs and old shipwrecks; snorkeling and scuba diving also are popular activities. Native Americans have lived on the island for 8,000 years; you can learn more about them and the island’s history at the Catalina Island Museum. Surprisingly, the island even boasts a small population of American bison that were brought to the island during the filming of a movie.

11. Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks

These two national parks are located next door to each other in the southern Sierra Nevada Mountains, and both are famous for their enormous giant sequoia trees. These trees can grow to be more than 300 feet (90 meters) tall and their trunks can be as much as 100 feet (30 meter) wide.

Sequoia National Park, which was established in 1890, is also home to Mount Whitney, which is the highest point in the contiguous United States. Interestingly enough, Kings Canyon boasts the deepest canyon in America.

The parks are also home to a lot of wildlife species, including bobcats, gray foxes, bears and mule deer. If they’re lucky, visitors might even be able to spot bighorn sheep or mountain lions. Both parks are popular with backpackers and hikers, and there are 14 campgrounds available for visitors.

10. Redwood National Park

Home to some of the tallest and oldest trees on Earth, Redwood National Park lies on California’s Pacific Coast in the northwest of the state. Established in 1968, the park protects the towering trees and the diverse ecosystems found in the old-growth forests.

While the mountains, rivers, and gorges dotting the region make for a fine sight, it is the enormous redwoods that are the star attraction. These magnificent trees often tower over a hundred meters, and some are more than two thousand years old. Hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding beneath them is an awe-inspiring experience as natural history lies all around you.

Redwood National Park’s rugged coast boasts some particularly dramatic scenery. Here, you can go kayaking and whale watching, with the redwoods forming a beautiful backdrop to the secluded coves and beaches along the park’s shores.

9. Santa Barbara

Set in a scenic spot between the steep slopes of the Santa Ynez Mountains and the Pacific Ocean, Santa Barbara is one of California’s most pleasant and picturesque coastal cities. As it boasts a majestic mountain backdrop, beautiful beaches, and a sunny climate, it is often billed as the ‘American Riviera’.

Besides its breathtaking setting, the city itself looks a treat. Lush parks and charming Spanish-style buildings dot the palm tree-lined streets. Of its many attractions, the Old Mission is the most famous and impressive due to its lovely architecture, flower-filled garden, and centuries-old artworks. As it is also home to exquisite restaurants, boutique shops, and art galleries, Santa Barbara is often seen as an upmarket destination.

Lying just 160 kilometers to the northwest of LA, it makes for a fantastic day trip or weekend getaway, with many festivals and cultural events held here throughout the year. Whether it’s hiking along the scenic coastline, surfing at the beaches, or visiting the nearby vineyards and wineries, Santa Barbara certainly has something that appeals to everyone.

8. Napa Valley

Located in California’s Bay Area, Napa Valley has long been a popular tourist destination and is famed for its beautiful landscapes and world-class wineries. Driving around its rolling hills and fertile vineyards is the best way to explore the region’s sights and scenery, although the roads can get quite busy in the summer months.

While most people come to sample the valley’s delicious wines, many gourmet restaurants, classy bistros, and award-winning spas are also dotted about. As such, it is a wonderful place to relax and unwind, with plenty of boutique hotels and luxury resorts to indulge yourself at. Napa also offers excellent hiking, golfing, and horseback riding, while hot air balloon rides above its idyllic countryside make for an unforgettable experience.

The most popular thing to do is embark on a wine tasting tour. The region has more than 200 wineries for you to choose from. Set among row upon row of grapevines, the gorgeous estates are lovely to visit. Sampling some of the excellent local wines in the sunshine is what Napa Valley is all about.

Located between the Carmel Highlands and San Simeon, Big Sur is a large, rocky stretch of the Californian Coastline. True to its name, Big Sur covers a rather large expanse of the coast; although it doesn’t have any official boundaries, it lines around 70 miles (110 km) of the California’s famous Highway One.

The area is a magnet for travelers on road trips, who are attracted by the incredible jagged rocks, towering redwood trees and breathtaking beaches along the route. More than just beautiful scenery for driving through, the area also provides plenty of top hiking opportunities which wind their way through the several state parks encompassed by Big Sur. These are home to sights, such as the iconic Bixby Bridge and rock towers at Pfeiffer Beach.

Big Sur’s towering seaside cliffs and ocean views have acquired an almost mythic reputation. As such, millions of people visit the region each year for its epic wilderness, stunning views, and ample outdoor recreation opportunities.

6. Lake Tahoe

The largest alpine lake in North America, Lake Tahoe lies high in the Sierra Nevada mountain range, straddling the California and Nevada state line. Long a popular tourist destination, its beautiful blue waters lend themselves perfectly to all kinds of outdoor activities, while a number of towns and cities dot its scenic shores.

Sparkling in the sun, Lake Tahoe stands out delightfully against the majestic mountains and forests that surround it. The lake became a vibrant winter sports destination after the 1960s Winter Olympics were held in Squaw Valley on the North Shore. Summer brings hiking in the mountains and boat trips on the lake, as well as days spent lazing on the shore, swimming, and BBQs.

Lake Tahoe is a great place to relax, unwind, and immerse yourself in nature, but it also has some pretty towns and cities to discover. The Nevada side of the lake attracts gamblers due to its many casinos, while Tahoe City and South Lake Tahoe have lovely beaches. In addition, Reno isn’t too far away if you want to head to a larger city at some point.

5. San Diego

Often called ‘America’s Finest City’, sun-kissed San Diego is home to miles of golden sands, a laidback surfer culture, and many world-class attractions . The second-largest city in the state, it lies on Southern California’s scenic coastline, just north of the Mexican border.

While lounging on beautiful beaches such as Mission Beach and La Jolla Shores is a must when in town, San Diego also boasts fantastic museums and historical sights. Many of these are in Balboa Park, which is also home to the world-famous San Diego Zoo. In addition, Downtown has plenty of great shops, restaurants, and bars, as well as numerous beautiful old buildings – such as Mission San Diego de Alcala – which highlight the city’s rich Spanish heritage.

4. Death Valley

Home to a harsh and unforgiving environment, the fittingly named Death Valley lies in the arid Mojave Desert. Set in a national park of the same name, the valley boasts awe-inspiring landscapes and spectacular scenery.

2. Yosemite National Park

One of the most famous and popular national parks in the US, Yosemite is visited by millions of people every year. Located in the western part of the Sierra Nevada mountain range, the park is home to some of the country’s most impressive and recognizable vistas.

I enjoyed Yosemite and San Diego and LA, but as a person living in CA, I don’t think San Francisco would be the top #1. I think #1 would be Yosemite or San Diego.

I love the waterfalls in Yosemite. It was so attractive. And also San Francisco was epic. The golden gate bridge was so beautiful. But,my favorite is LA. It’s just so big and wide and has many attractions.

Home to the largest trees on Earth, Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks are bucket-list destinations . The sequoias here are the largest living things in the world, and many of them are more than 2,000 years old, with some even more than 3,000 years old.

These adjacent parks cover an area of mountains with majestic granite peaks, deep gorges, lakes, rivers, and forests, but they are quite different from each other. If you are planning on visiting both parks, you will need at least a couple of days.

Although both parks are home to the giant sequoias, Sequoia National Park is arguably the best place to visit these ancient wonders. Easy walking trails, many of them paved, meander through the trees and provide easy access to the major sites. This park is also home to Mt. Whitney, which at 14,495 feet is the highest mountain in the US (apart from Alaska).

You can find some beautiful campgrounds in Sequoia National Park , many of which are well positioned for visiting the trees and other attractions, like Moro Rock, and the famous giant sequoia known as General Sherman Tree.

Kings Canyon National Park is more rugged and wild, with jagged peaks, roaring rivers, and remote sections where you can escape the crowds and enjoy nature. This is a popular park for hiking. Walking through a forest of giant redwoods, towering more than 300 feet above you, feels like entering another era. Descendants of trees from the Jurassic Period, these are the tallest trees on the planet, and they are truly one of California's greatest treasures.

These jointly managed parks, which include Redwood National Park, Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park, Del Norte Redwoods State Park, and Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park, stretch out along a spectacular portion of Northern California Coast. Each offers something a little different, but in all of them you can find great hiking trails and beautiful campgrounds .

Joshua trees bring a type of magic to this otherwise lunar-like landscape, where giant boulders and rock formations create wild shapes that capture the imagination. The park covers 800,000 acres and offers a range of diverse sites that include much more than just the Joshua trees.

The Cholla Cactus Garden , where chollas stretch out endlessly along the hillside to the mountains beyond, the ruins of the historic Keys Ranch , the giant palms of the Lost Palms Oasis, and the vista from over 5,000 feet at Keys View are just some of the highlights. Also don't miss Skull Rock ; a huge rock resembling an alien skull.

Hearst Castle, officially known as the Hearst San Simeon State Historical Monument, was started in 1919 and built over a 28-year period, resulting in a mix of architectural styles that make it quirky and stately all at the same time. Built by newspaper baron William Randolph Hearst, the 165-room castle was never completed.

It sits atop a hill at an elevation of 1,600 feet and offers fantastic views out over the Pacific Ocean and the Santa Lucia Range. One of the major attractions here is the immense collection of art. At one time, the castle was home to the world's largest private zoo, and to this day, zebras and other exotic wildlife can be seen wandering the grounds.

Part of the Channel Islands, Santa Catalina lies about 22 miles southwest of Los Angeles. The island is a popular destination with boaters and day trippers. Avalon is the main population center and where most of the action is centered. On the other end of the island is the much smaller village of Two Harbours.

While most people come to Santa Catalina Island to wander around and enjoy a day of leisure, other popular things to do include glass bottom boat tours, scuba diving, kayaking, and parasailing. You can reach the island by ferry from San Pedro, Long Beach, Newport Beach, and Dana Point.

Channel Islands National Park, made up of five individual islands, is a great place to see wildlife and a little undisturbed nature. Having always been isolated from the mainland, the islands have developed independently, and as a result, have many endemic animals.

The Getty Center is one of the premier museums in the United States. The museum holds treasures by great artists like Monet and Van Gogh, along with sculptures and other beautiful forms of art prior to 1900.

A visit here is also about the architecture and grounds of the museum itself. The building flows and undulates in a shimmering curtain of white, while out front, intricate gardens and waterfalls complete the scene. If you've ever wanted to lie by the pool in the morning and make snow angels in the afternoon, put a ride on the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway on your list of California things to do. California's desert regions are all about elevation. The higher you go, the colder it gets. In the spring, the pool and snow combo is easily accomplished.

The tramway runs for two miles and ascends up to an elevation of 8,516 feet on the slopes of Mount Jacinto. The tramway is unique in its design; each of the trams rotate as they ascend, allowing for uninterrupted views across a 360-degree panorama. In fact, the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway is the largest of its kind in the world.

At the top, choose to be active by walking or hiking on the 50 miles of trails, or more sedate by enjoying a spectacular view over lunch or dinner at one of the two restaurants. This area offers some of the best hiking around Palm Springs .

One of California's greatest free attractions is the Griffith Observatory. Perched high on Mount Hollywood and overlooking the city of Los Angeles, this iconic California attraction offers not only fantastic views out over the city but also the opportunity to learn about the heavens.

Inside the observatory are six galleries devoted to all aspects of space and how we observe it. In addition to the galleries are the public telescopes, allowing you to view the heavens in a way you've never imagined.

Laguna Beach

Crystal Cove State Park has more than three miles of pristine beach.

But also across the road from the water, the park contains many acres of beautiful wilderness, with trails offering stellar ocean views.

Laguna Beach is known for its public art installations.

Avalon is one of two towns on Santa Catalina Island, one of the Channel Islands that lie off the coast of Southern California.

Accessed by ferry, Avalon makes for a wonderful California getaway.

The Nit Wit Ridge has a bit of a funny name, but it’s a tourist attraction for a reason.

It is a large, rustic castle that is perched over the top of a hill. It is a folk-art-type structure built on 2.5 acres of land.

The very second you visit its large expanse, you’ll wonder how such places can exist in California at all!

Feel free to explore the palace and its open rooms.

You’ll be surprised by the dissonance between the old and the new – some ancient aspects linger, mingling with more modern innovations.

It’s truly an experience you have to have at least once in your life.

The Painted Canyons are relatively easy to hike through, so it’s perfect for beginners, or just those who want a more laidback excursion in California.

Visitors to these canyons need to climb ladders to get to where they need to go on this dessert excursion.

The walls of these canyons do, in fact, appear painted – stripes of red, green, pink, gray, and brown are streaked across the walls, pass through crevices and enjoy the surprisingly cool walk through this spot in the Mecca Hills.

From sunny beaches to mountain lakes and world-class cities, there’s something for everyone here. Read on for my top picks. I’ve included a map of all the places on my list, too.

I was born and raised in California, and I’ve been to many of the best places to visit in summer in this part of the United States. From family trips to Lake Tahoe to sunny sojourns to San Diego, I’ve covered a lot of ground over the years.

Which is how I know there’s a summer vacation spot for every type of traveler here. Whether you’re seeking sunshine in Santa Barbara or hiking adventures in Yosemite National Park, the Golden State offers residents and out-of-state visitors alike a wide range of destinations to travel in the peak season.

My list includes ideas for Memorial Day weekend getaways , the best places to go for 4th of July in California , destinations to visit over federal holidays like Juneteenth, popular spots for Labor Day weekend , and other all-around great places to travel in the summertime.

Before making a decision about where to visit in California in summer, keep in mind that a lot of places get crowded at this time of year. This is particularly true when it comes to beaches, cities, national parks, mountain destinations, theme parks, and other sites that are popular with visitors in the warmer months.

In light of that, it’s a good idea to book things like accommodation as far in advance as you can. You’ll have a better chance of finding lower rates and having a wider selection of properties to choose from. You can see options and book a place to stay here .

The same goes for theme parks and big attractions that are popular with families during summer break. If you’re planning on going somewhere like Disneyland, Legoland California Resort , Knott’s Berry Farm, or Universal Studios Hollywood, buying tickets early can ensure you get to visit on the dates you want to go.

Summer Weather in California

While many people assume California is hot in summer, it’s important to keep in mind that not all parts of the Golden State experience warm temperatures all season. Coastal fog can mean places like San Francisco, Half Moon Bay, Carmel, Monterey, and Santa Cruz are cool (if not cold) for at least part of the day in the summer months.

The good news is that the fog often burns off later in the day. Even if it doesn’t, a short drive inland usually means you’ll find the warm California climate you were hoping for. If it’s cold in summer in San Francisco , you can bet it will be hot in nearby wine country. It’s a great excuse to take a day trip to Napa or Sonoma .

Additionally, even places that seem impervious to cold weather in the summer months can experience a meteorological phenomenon locals call “June Gloom”. This is particularly true in Southern California, where overcast skies and cool temperatures often persist through early summer (and even into July). LA and San Diego can both experience this.

First on my list of the best places to visit in California in summer is Malibu . This Southern California gem is a popular vacation destination year-round, but in summer it really shines.

There’s a lot to do in Malibu, from stunning beaches to fun hikes and great drives. Zuma Beach is often considered the best stretch of sand, but there are plenty of others. From Paradise Cove Beach to Carbon Beach, this part of Los Angeles County has an abundance of them (and part of the one in Leo Carrillo State Park is on-leash dog-friendly).

When it comes to hiking, the Mugu Peak Trail is hard to beat, and Tuna Canyon is a fun place to hit the trails. If you want to drive, cruising down the Pacific Coast Highway (call it PCH) or heading up the roads in Topanga Canyon is a treat (especially if you have a sports car or a convertible).

Furthermore, Malibu has great food and drink. From wineries to beachfront restaurants, this part of Southern California has it all.

Malibu Seafood is a great order-at-the-counter spot, Geoffrey’s is famous for weekend brunch, Nobu is known for sushi, the Inn of the Seventh Ray has creekside dining in the Santa Monica Mountains, and Reel Inn is popular with celebrities.

If you like shopping, Malibu Country Mart is just the spot. There are plenty of places to get your retail therapy fix here, and restaurants to boot. There are also a few cute places to shop at Trancas Country Market.

San Diego is another of my top picks for places to visit in California in summer. With sunny weather (apart from June Gloom), famous surfing beaches, and fun attractions and nightlife, this beach city in SoCal is a great place for every kind of traveler.

If you’re visiting with kids, San Diego is an ideal family vacation destination. From La Jolla to Del Mar and beyond, there are beaches for playing, surfing, and stand-up paddle boarding. Legoland in Carlsbad is popular with young children, too.

If you’re looking for something more grown up, you can enjoy activities like golfing or paragliding in Torrey Pines, shopping in Del Mar, doing a bar crawl in the historic Gaslamp Quarter, or partying in Pacific Beach.

There are lots of great attractions in San Diego, too. The San Diego Zoo is world famous, Balboa Park is beautiful, and Cabrillo National Monument is full of history (and tide pools). Visitors can also tour the USS Midway , go on a harbor cruise , and tuck into delicious Mexican food.

If you have time, places like Oceanside and Encinitas are also worth a visit. Oceanside is home to sandy beaches, historic landmarks, colorful street art, and great restaurants. Encinitas is known for its fun downtown area, wide beaches, and coastal cliffs.

Lake Tahoe is next on my list of the best places to visit in California in summer. My family had a place here when I was growing up, and it remains one of my all-time favorite spots to soak up the sun in the Sierra Nevada Mountains.

This part of the Golden State is popular for outdoor activities like boating, river rafting, mountain biking, hiking, and other alpine activities. There’s plenty of shopping, spas, and restaurants if you want to go at a more relaxed pace, too.

If you like getting out on the water, there’s no shortage of things to do in Lake Tahoe in summer. Whether you want to go on a motorboat, kayak around the shoreline, take a cruise on a historic paddle wheel boat, kiteboard, SUP, waterski, wakeboard, or wakesurf, there’s something for everyone.

You can raft down the Truckee River and have lunch outside at River Ranch, too. It’s my favorite thing to do in Tahoe in summer.

There are plenty of things to entertain you on land, too. From hikes along the Rubicon Trail and in Desolation Wilderness to mountain biking down the ski slopes and cycling along the paved bike paths, there are lots of activities on offer. If you don’t want to exert yourself too much, there are great beaches in places like Carnelian Bay for soaking up the sun.

Santa Barbara is another of my top picks for places to visit in California in summer. This coastal city is known for its beautiful beaches, great shopping, delicious wine tasting, and luxury hotels . There are excellent restaurants and plenty of sightseeing to do here as well.

There’s a lot going on in Santa Barbara in summer, too. This is a year-round destination, and you can enjoy everything from the downtown shops to the coastal areas and inland gems while you’re visiting.

Whether you want to go to the beach, visit museums and cultural sites, cycle along the waterfront, or head out to the Channel Islands National Park, you have lots of options.

And that’s to say nothing of the seafood restaurants on Stearns Wharf, the colorful street art murals in the Funk Zone, the mouth-watering food stalls in the Santa Barbara Public Market, the tasting rooms along the Urban Wine Trail, the old mission, and the nightlife scene. There’s a lot you can do on the water in summer, too. From parasailing to surfing, kayaking, sailing, and stand-up paddle boarding, there are plenty of things to get excited about in this part of the Golden State.

And that’s to say nothing of the rest of Santa Barbara County. From the shopping in Montecito to the beaches in Goleta, the historic stagecoach stop at Cold Spring Tavern, the wine tasting in the Santa Rita Hills, the cute streets in Los Olivos and Santa Ynez, and the unique Danish town of Solvang, there’s an abundance of places to visit here.

Los Angeles is one of my favorite places to visit in Southern California during summer. With great beaches, amazing restaurants, and lots of attractions, LA has plenty to entertain every type of traveler.

From the beaches in the South Bay and Santa Monica to the nightlife in Venice and the Arts District, there’s a lot to get excited about in this part of the Golden State. And that’s to say nothing of the rooftop bars, hotel pools, clubs, and hip restaurants and shops in Downtown LA (DTLA).

The City of Angels offers much in the way of sightseeing and activities in summer, too. From Griffith Observatory to the Walk of Fame in Hollywood, the Marvin Braude Bike Trail in Manhattan Beach, the rooftop cinema in DTLA, and the rides at Universal Studios, there’s lots do and see. If you want to go to the beach, LA has you covered. My favorite stretches of sand in this part of California are Manhattan Beach, Malibu, Santa Monica, and Long Beach, but you can’t go wrong here. There are pretty pebble beaches you can hike to in Palos Verdes, too.

If it’s hot outside, LA has cultural institutions like the Walt Disney Concert Hall, and museums like The Getty and The Broad. If you want to get your retail therapy fix, shopping streets like Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills and Abbot Kinney in Venice are hard to beat.

Catalina Island is another of my favorite places to visit in California during summer. It’s a great travel destination if your idea of a perfect vacation is one where you soak up the sun and enjoy the island vibes.

While a lot of people visit Catalina as a day trip from Los Angeles or elsewhere on the mainland, there’s enough to entertain visitors in the summer months that it’s worth spending a night or two on the island. My Catalina itinerary will show you why.

There’s plenty to do and see on Catalina Island in summer. This is peak season, so you can take your pick of activities and excursions. From outdoor pursuits like the Garden to Sky Hike to shopping, dining, adventure tours , spas, museums, kayaking, and boating, there’s no shortage of ways to enjoy your time here in June, July, or August.

The weather is warm and sunny in summer, and you can go in the water to swim, stand-up paddle board, snorkel, scuba dive, and play in the waves. If you want to stay on land, you can sunbathe on the beach, go on a tour to see the resident bison, try zip lining, or ascend a climbing wall.

There are also plenty of seasonal events here in the summer months. From decorating contests on the 4th of July to a golf cart parade on Casino Way, a dinghy parade in the harbor, fireworks over Avalon Bay, The Catalina Wine Mixer weekend, and the Two Harbors Wine Fest, this part of the Golden State has a lot of summer celebrations.

It’s a great summer break destination for families and a fun place for couples, groups of friends, and other travelers.

There’s no shortage of exciting things to do and cities to discover while you’re on summer vacation in Orange County. Whether you go to Laguna Beach, Corona del Mar State Beach Park, Newport Beach, or somewhere else, there are loads of options in this part of the Golden State.

If you visit Laguna Beach, you can go to the tide pools, visit the Pacific Marine Mammal Center, have a picnic at Treasure Island Park, snorkel at Divers Cove, or soak up the sunset from Crescent Bay Park.

If you don’t want to spend your whole time at the beach, there are plenty of other things to do in Orange County in summer, too. Theme parks like Disneyland, Adventure City, and Knott’s Berry Farm are popular places for kids of all ages to visit.

There are fun summer events in Orange County, too. From the annual Tustin Street Fair and Chili Cook-Off to the Sawdust Art Festival, Music in the Park, and Pageant of the Masters in Laguna Beach, there are celebrations all season long.

There’s a lot you can do in Yosemite in June, July, and August, too. The Tioga Road and Glacier Point usually open in late spring or early summer each year (depending on winter snowfall), so you’ll likely have the whole park to explore when you visit. Yosemite’s waterfalls are amazing in summer, and if you visit in early June you’ll be able to see them at their seasonal fullest (they’ll be great all summer, though). From Bridalveil Fall to Yosemite Falls, Vernal Fall, and Nevada Fall, you can admire some of the most famous while you’re here.

There are epic hikes in Yosemite, too. Whether you want to ascend the famous Mist Trail, soak up the views from the Panorama Trail, take a gentle walk around the Wawona Meadow Loop, or climb Half Dome, there’s something for every skill and fitness level.

If you want something a bit more relaxed, you can spend time at places like The Ansel Adams Gallery, check out the Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias, drive around the Yosemite Valley Loop, take a dip in Tenaya Lake, soak up the scenery from Olmsted Point, watch the climbers on El Capitan, or admire the vistas from Tunnel View.

Next on my list of the top places to go in California in summer is Paso Robles. This part of the Golden State is known for its hills studded with olive groves and vineyards. Given it’s situated midway between San Francisco and Los Angeles, it’s a popular place to visit on a road trip.

There’s a lot going on in Paso in summertime, too. Paso Robles Concerts in the Park is a free series that goes all season long. Then there’s the annual Firestone Walker Invitational Beer Festival, FARMstead ED’s Open Farm Days, the free 4th of July Celebration in Barney Schwartz Park, the California Mid-State Fair, and Distillery Trail Weekend.

Beyond seasonal events and festivals, Paso Robles has a lot going for it. Exploring the downtown area is a great thing to do, and you can go on hot air balloon rides, hikes, scavenger hunts, and horseback rides as well. You can even soak in mineral hot springs here.

If you’re a fan of culture and history, you can visit the Estrella Warbird Museum or Paso Robles Pioneer Museum. And if you enjoy art (and you get excited about all things Instagrammable), Field of Light at Sensorio is an amazing multi-acre walk-through experience you’ll love.

There’s a lot more to do and see in the area around Paso Robles as well. San Simeon, Cambria, and Hearst Castle are all less than an hour away. And that’s to say nothing of spots like Morro Bay, Pismo Beach, San Luis Obispo, and Avila Beach .

If you’re a fan of the mountains, Mammoth Lakes is another of the best places to visit in California during summer. Mammoth is known for offering a range of outdoor activities in the warmer months. From mountain biking to hiking and waterfalls, there are all kinds of things to do here.

You can also visit the beautiful mountain lakes in and around Mammoth. From Mono Lake to the bodies of water along the June Lake Loop, they reveal the natural wonders of the eastern Sierra Nevada. My Mammoth Lakes summer itinerary can give you more ideas.

If you’re into history, you can visit old ghost towns like Bodie while you’re in the area. They’re unique spots to dig into California’s Gold Rush past and see what life was like in this part of the state in the olden days.

Summer is also a great time to go fishing, hike on the Panorama Dome Trail or Duck Lake Trail, bike along the paved cycle paths around the Mammoth Lakes Basin, visit Devils Postpile National Monument and Rainbow Falls, ride the gondola to the top of Mammoth Mountain, take in the view from Minaret Vista, or admire the geothermal vents bubbling up in Hot Creek.

There are also annual events like the Mammoth Lakes 4th of July Parade, the Mammoth Feel Good Festival and other summer music festivals, Family Fun Day, Mammoth Margarita Fest, Mammoth Festival of Beers and Bluesapalooza, Mammoth Wine Weekend, and more.

If you’re visiting at the beginning or end of the summer, the Mammoth Lakes Film Festival takes place each year over Memorial Day weekend and the Rock N Rye whiskey festival and Summit Sunset Party take place over Labor Day weekend.

If you’re coming from the Bay Area or other parts of Northern California, you can get to Mammoth via Tahoe or Yosemite. It’s fun to combine them all in one trip.

Mount Shasta is another fun place to go in California during summer. The peak season here is June and July, and it’s the perfect time to visit this part of the Golden State for a number of reasons.

The best time to climb Mount Shasta is usually from May to mid-July when the days are long, there’s good snow coverage, and the weather is (usually) at its best. This makes June an ideal time to be here regardless of what the snow conditions are like in the winter.

The waterfalls are also amazing to see, especially in June. From Burney Falls to McCloud Falls, Ash Creek Falls, Whitney Falls, Faery Falls, and Hedge Creek Falls, they’re great to admire when the glacier runoff is going strong.

Regardless of when you visit, you can enjoy activities like the visiting Stewart Mineral Hot Springs, swimming in the mountain lakes, walking through meadows, hiking from Castle Lake to Heart Lake, and golfing at Mount Shasta Resort .

There are seasonal highlights, too. These include the 4th of July celebrations on Lake Siskiyou, the Shasta Mountain Art, Wine, and Brew Fest, the free Mt. Shasta Summer Concert Series, the Mt Shasta Enduro, the Grinduro, and the Shasta Gromduro. Whatever you’re into, there’s fun to be found here all summer long.

On the Northern California coast, this county features stunning redwood forests, vineyards, boulder-studded beaches, art galleries, and classic scenery. The towns in Mendocino have good restaurants and historic charm as well.

This part of the Golden State has a lot for visitors to enjoy in the summer, too. Highlights include the Mendocino Film Festival, The World’s Largest Salmon BBQ, Willits Frontier Days, Art in the Gardens, Sierra Nevada World Music Festival, Mendocino Music Festival, Mendocino 4th of July Parade, Round Valley Blackberry Festival, and the Art in the Redwoods Festival.

If you’re not in town for any of those, Mendocino County has everything from hiking trails to local landmarks and wineries. Whether you want to visit Fort Bragg, go to Manchester State Beach, or explore Mendocino Headlands State Park, there’s something for every traveler on this part of the Northern California coast.

Most visitors to Sequoia National Park come to see highlights like the General Sherman Tree, the Tunnel Tree, the subterranean Crystal Cave, and Moro Rock. The park is also known for its mountains, foothills, and canyons.

Summer is a great time to visit Sequoia National Park, as seasonal roads like Generals Highway are open and there’s no risk of closures due to snow.

There’s great hiking here, and lots of outdoor activities to enjoy. Whether you want to drive along the roads to take in the views, climb Moro Rock, check out the visitor center, have a picnic, walk through the Giant Forest, or spot wildlife, there’s something for everyone here.

If you want to, you can combine a visit to Sequoia National Park with King’s Canyon National Park. They’re so close to one another that many people do a twin-center vacation and explore both in one road trip.

14. Big Sur

Next on my list of the best places to visit in California in summer is Big Sur. This is one of the most popular places to travel in the Golden State because the natural beauty here is hard to beat. The coastal scenery draws visitors from all across the globe, and there are plenty of great hotels and restaurants in the area.

From coastal hikes to bolder-studded beaches and awe-inspiring waterfalls, this part of the Central Coast has a lot to do and see. It’s perfect if you love nature and outdoor activities.

Whether you want to hike in Andrew Molera State Park, photograph the iconic Bixby Bridge, soak up the views of McWay Falls in Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park, enjoy a sunset dinner at Post Ranch Inn or Nepenthe, go surfing, or just admire the coastal scenery this area is known for, there are plenty of ways to spend your time here.

If you need more ideas, you can take a look at my  Big Sur itinerary . It has all kinds of things to do and see along this iconic stretch of Highway 1. Just make sure to check for road closures before you plan your trip, as landslides can often cause damage on this part of the California Coast.

If you want to, you can extend your trip and combine it with a visit to some equally famous areas nearby. My  Big Sur, Carmel, and Monterey itinerary  has lots of additional ideas for you. If you have more time, Santa Cruz and Capitola are just up the coast and they’re easy to visit as well.

15. Lassen Volcanic National Park

Lassen Volcanic National Park is a great place to travel in Northern California during summer. One of the most underrated places in the Golden State, it’s worth a visit for its steaming fumaroles, mountain lakes, wildflower meadows, and volcanoes.

Visitors to Lassen Volcanic National Park can see the bubbling mud pots of Bumpass Hell, admire the views from the top of Lassen Peak Volcano, take in the lava rocks in the Devastated Area, and hike along trails through forested areas and around lakes.

Late summer is a great time to be here because the heavy snow will be gone and roads like Lassen National Park Highway are open from the end of July at the latest. The same is true for for paths like the Bumpass Hell Trail, which remains closed due to snow coverage into July.

If you like wildflowers, you’re in luck. These beauties are at peak bloom in high elevation areas like Summit Lake and Lassen Peak between July and September. At lower elevations like Manzanita and Butte Lake, they bloom in May and June.

Fun things to do in Lassen Volcanic National Park in summer include ranger-led programs like night sky viewing, cycling along seasonally-closed sections of the park highway before they open to cars, special events for stargazing, scenic drives, and hiking on paths like the Lassen Peak Trail.

Ultimate California Bucket List: 100 Adventures You Need to Have in the State

As a state, California really does have a little bit of everything. From the scenic coastal drives and the arid deserts to towering Eastern Sierras and the large metropolitan cities, you could spend your whole life exploring this state and still not see all that it has to offer. I have spent the last five years trying to document as much of it as I can on my site, so I figured the five year anniversary would be a good time to create a bucket list of the 100 best spots I have seen over my time exploring. Check them out below and let me know what you would add to this list in the comments.

1. Marvel at Burney Falls

One of my personal favorite spots, Burney Falls in Northern California is probably the best waterfall in the entire state. Sure there are bigger ones in Yosemite, but for me, the cascading power of this waterfall makes it something I keep coming back to again and again.

2. Hike to Hollywood Sign

There are few things more iconic in California then the famous Hollywood Sign. Hiking to it is a rite of passage for many a Southern California hiker, and while you can’t get that close to it, you can still look down on this icon with the city of Los Angeles behind it, making it a must do in the state.

3. Drive the Big Sur Coastline

The Big Sur coastline has been inspiring people for centuries with its rugged mountains that lead right down to picturesque beaches. Make sure you have a few days to explore though as there is so much to see.

4. Get Your Feet Wet at Fern Canyon

One of California’s best and easiest hikes, Fern Canyon in Northern California was a spot used in the filming of Jurassic Park, The Lost World. If that doesn’t tell you how beautiful it is then just remember this movie was supposed to take place on a tropical island. It is one of those hikes you won’t forget.

5. Stargaze at Glacier Point

There are lots of great places for dark night skies in California, but my favorite is Glacier Point in Yosemite. There is just something about watching the sunset fade over half dome and then seeing the stars light up the sky behind it that is just magical to me.

6. Kayak to Fannette Island in Emerald Bay State Park

In South Lake Tahoe sits one of my favorite state parks in all of California, Emerald Bay. In the middle of the bay is an island with an old tea house on top of it. Rent a kayak and paddle out to the island, where you can leave the kayak and walk up to the old tea house.

7. See the Rocks Move at the Death Valley Racetrack

No trip to Death Valley is complete without taking the 27-mile dirt road out to the racetrack where the rocks move on their own. This desolate spot, out on an old dry lake bed, is a place you need to see with your own eyes to believe.

8. Watch the Sunset over the Golden Gate Bridge

The Golden Gate Bridge is up there with the Hollywood Sign as one of the most notable man-made objects in the state. I never get tired of seeing it, as it is just so majestic. Take the time to sit and watch the sun go down on it when you are in the area. I like Moore Pier or Battery Point for this.

9. Walk up Salvation Mountain

One man’s tribute to God’s Love is a really fun road trip destination out in the Salton Sea. Sure it can be a strange place to visit and incredibly hot in the summer, but you will never forget seeing this crazy painted mountain right out in the arid desert.

10. Climb to the Highest Point in the Contiguous   USA ,  Mt Whitney

If you are a hiker then of course Mt Whitney is on your list. While it is not technical, it is a real grind to get to the top especially considering the high altitude which tops out at over 14,000 feet. However, once you get there, you will be standing on top of the tallest mountain in the lower 48, which is quite an achievement.

11. Wine Taste at the Oldest Winery in the State

In Sonoma County sits the oldest, continuously running winery in all of California. At over a century and a half old it is even on the National Register of Historical Places and it is a fun spot to say you visited when in CA. The winery is called Buena Vista, and it has an awesome old stone building that you wine taste in.

12. Explore the Capitol Building in Sacramento

Sacramento itself is a great spot to spend some time and dive into the awesome Farm to Fork scene they are cultivating. However, the most unique thing you can do in the city is visit the Capitol Building and see the different Houses represented there. I found this to be really interesting and something that should be on everyone’s list.

13. Take a Boat to the Channel Islands

The Channel Islands are one of the least visited national parks in the entire United States, which makes them an amazingly peaceful spot for exploring and for relaxing your mind. Whether it is kayaking, hiking or wildlife viewing you will find something to love on these remote islands.

14. Watch the Sunset over the Sunset Cliffs

By far one of my favorite spots for watching the sunset is the aptly named Sunset Cliffs in San Diego. I have been here countless times, and I never tire of how beautiful the area is and how amazing the sunset appears as it eases slowly down over the rocks and water. It feels remote even though it is right in the middle of one of the busiest cities in the USA.

15. See the Oldest Trees in the World

Taking the trip up to the Ancient Bristlecone Forest outside of Big Pine should be on every adventurer’s list. The oldest living tree in the world is situated up there and even if that wasn’t the case, these gnarled, and unique pine trees are a photographers paradise.

16. Walk the Cypress Tree Tunnel in Point Reyes

Sure you have seen this on one of your favorite photographer’s Instagrams, but have you thought about visiting yourself? It is such an easy spot to get to a you literally just drive up. The pictures are just incredible with the old cypress grove seeming to close in on you as you walk the road.

17. Sit at the Base of the Largest Tree in the World

Not to be overshadowed by the oldest tree in the world, the largest tree in the world is also in California, in Sequoia National Park. It is hard to comprehend when you see it as it is just so large, but it really does make you realize how small you are in the grand scheme of things.

18. Rappel into Moaning Cavern

When you think of unique adventures in California, it is hard to think of something as unique as this. In Central California, there is a cave that the Statue of Liberty could fit into and that you can pay to rappel into. It was such a crazy experience that I highly recommend you get over your fear or heights and do it as well.

19. Hike to the Top of Half Dome

Half Dome is probably the most recognizable natural attraction in California and for good reason. The hike to the top is not for the faint of heart, as you have to do 16 miles and 6,000 feet of elevation to complete it, a few hundred feet of which is by pulling yourself up anxiety-inducing cables. I was so proud of myself for finishing it, but I probably would not do it again.

20. Road Trip to the California Missions

The 21 Spanish California Missions are unique pieces of California history. If you have grown up in the California school system, then you will study them in the 4th grade, but if not you can make a fun, week-long road trip visiting these buildings, which are some of the oldest in the entire state.

21. Bike the Devils Slide

Outside of Half Moon Bay, there is an old piece of Pacific Coast Highway that was so dangerous that it was closed. When they closed it though they repaved it and made it a multi-use trail for walking and biking. It is one of the most beautiful bike trails you can do in the state as you get to look at staggering views without worrying about cars.

22. Hang Out with the Elephant Seals in Ano Nuevo

Ano Nuevo State Park is unique in California as it protects the elephant seal population but also provides an almost safari-like experience for the visitor. During the summer months, you can hike out to the area where the elephant seals are at and watch them in their natural habitat. It is a lot of fun as there are sand dunes and such which make it so you never know what you are going to find over each new hill.

23. Explore the Wine Castle in Napa Valley

Sure the true wine people might not love this recommendation, but it is just such a fun spot to explore that it is an easy suggestion for me. The castle itself has over 100 rooms and you can take a tour that takes you through dungeons, courtyards, and ballrooms. They call it the Disneyland for adults and it is easy to see why.

24. Snowshoe to Fallen Leaf Lake

During the winter months in Lake Tahoe, grabbing some snowshoes is one of the best ways you can see the area without other people. I like the trail to Fallen Leaf Lake as it is approachable for almost anyone, yet the views at the end are stunning.

25. Marvel at the Avenue of the Giants

The Avenue of the Giants rivals Big Sur for me in terms of drives that just continue to blow your mind. This ride takes you 31 miles through one of the most beautiful groves of redwoods that you have ever seen. Each bend provides another fantastic spot for a photo and you can stop at dozens of groves to explore and experience the trees up close as well.

26. Spend a Day in the Alabama Hills

While I wouldn’t recommend this during the summer, during the spring and fall the Alabama Hills are a wonderland for the adventurer. With hundreds of arches, most that don’t even have trails, you can scramble around rocks, drive the dirt roads and just get lost trying to find new rock formations.

27. Watch the Sunset over the Kelso Dunes

As one of the easiest to access set of dunes in California, the Kelso Dunes are an amazing spot to spend some time at. I will say that the hike up is not very enjoyable, but if you watch the sunset over the desert from there it is hard to beat.

28. Sit in a Hot Spring off Highway 395

There are a dozen or so hot springs around the Bishop / Mammoth area and while some are better than others, it is hard to beat sitting in a hot tub fed by natural warm water and looking out over the Eastern Sierras.

29. See the California State Fish in the Golden Trout Wilderness

The golden trout are only really found in one particular area of California, called the Golden Trout Wilderness. Located at 10,000 feet, these high altitude lakes and streams are incredible places to explore even if you don’t like to fish.

30. Hike to the World’s Largest Wooden Trestle 

As one of the tougher short hikes you can do in California, visiting the Goat Canyon Trestle is an epic bucket list adventure. This bridge is the largest freestanding wooden trestle in the world, so it makes sense that the adventure would be worth the payoff.

31. Explore the Geothermal Pools of Bumpass Hell

While nowhere near what you would see in Yellowstone, California’s geothermal area in Lassen National Park is still worth seeing. Bumpass Hell is the highlight of the area as it has crazy colors and a boardwalk that takes you right over the bubbling pools.

32. Tour the Historic Mission Inn Hotel

The Mission Inn is one of the most beautiful and historic hotels in California. It has welcomed many presidents and was the place where Richard Nixon got married. The hotel is gorgeous and really fun to walk around and explore. Bonus points for going during Christmas when they have one of the best Christmas light displays in the USA.

33. Find a Banana Slug in Santa Cruz

One of the most unique little creatures in California is the elusive and fun banana slug which hangs out in the mountains above Santa Cruz. You never know if you will stumble on one while on a trail but Big Basin State Park is a great spot to see these guys.

34. Get in the Christmas Spirit at Robolights in Palm Springs

As one of the largest private Christmas light displays in all of the USA, Kenny’s Robolights in Palm Springs is a positively uncommon experience. The robots and characters that fill this massive property are covered in more lights than you can imagine one person facilitating.

35. Drive through Bishop Creek in the Fall

Bishop Creek is one of the most beautiful spots in the entire Eastern Sierra range year-round; however, when the colors change in the fall, it becomes gorgeous. I go pretty much every year, and it never gets old.

36. Have a Drink with a Mermaid

Dive Bar in Sacramento has a full aquarium above the bar, and during select weekend nights they have mermaids and mermen that swim in the aquarium while interacting with the fish and the patrons below.

37. Marvel at the Devil’s Postpile

Located on the backside of Mammoth Mountain, Devil’s Postpile is a fantastic National Monument with a crazy rock formation. Bonus points for also hiking to Rainbow Falls while in the area.

38. Whale Watch in Santa Cruz

Santa Cruz is a great town in general, but when the whales are coming through the area it becomes magical. I recommend getting out on a boat and seeing the animals up close, but often you can even see them from the pier as well.

39. Wander through California’s Best Aquarium

While the Monterey Aquarium can be expensive and crowded, it truly is an amazing way to see the coast’s plethora of sea creatures. I can easily spend a half day just walking around and taking in all of the fantastic fish, eels, and seahorses they have on display.

40. Make a Frog Jump in Angels Camp

Angel’s Camp is home to a yearly fair where they have a unique event, frog jumping. While you should go just to watch the “professionals” you can also try your hand at the sport as well. This event became famous through the Mark Twain novel called “The Jumping Frogs of Calaveras County.”

41. See Yosemite’s Second Valley at Hetch Hetchy

While the issue of the dam at Hetch Hetchy is incredibly polarizing, no one can debate about the beauty of the area itself. There are miles of trails that take you around the area’s waterfalls and rivers while looking down on the lake itself.

42. Enjoy Beach Hiking at Torrey Pines State Reserve

As one of my favorite hikes in Southern California, Torrey Pines is a great spot to do some beach hiking. The trails lead to multiple overlooks while eventually taking you down to a picturesque beach as well.

43. Get a Donut at One of California Most Iconic Spots

The giant donut that sits on top of Randy’s in Los Angeles has been beckoning visitors for decades. I for one go nearly every time I am in the area and it never gets old. The donut has been featured in tons of movies as well, such as Iron Man 2. I recommend the chocolate devils food.

44. Float down the Sacramento River

One of the most popular Northern California adventures in the summer is grabbing an inner tube and just getting out on the river to float. They have one of the largest floats in California during memorial day weekend in Chico or you can avoid the crowds and go any other day of the year.

45. Backpack in Yosemite

While hiking the John Muir Trail is one of the most iconic hikes in all of the USA, most people will not have the opportunity to do it and I wanted to keep this list approachable to everyone. Backpacking in Yosemite is one of the best ways to explore the park while avoiding a lot of the crowds. I recommend doing something like Glen Aulin or Clouds Rest if it is your first time and be sure to research and understand what you are doing before you go.

46. Walk Across the Border to Mexico

Since California shares a border with Mexico, you really should visit it while living / exploring the state. Most people will choose to walk over the border at Tijuana and do some shopping, but for me I like to head east and walk over the border at Tecate. This city is home to the famous brewery and it can be fun to wander around and have a drink or a burrito then walk back across.

47. Take Surf Lessons in San Diego

If you are in California then you should try your hand at surfing, which is a relative state sport here. There is no better spot to do it then in the magical city of San Diego with its fabulous beaches and perfect weather.

48. Bike from Huntington to Newport Beach

While there are lots of great beach bike trails like San Clemente, I really like biking from Huntington to Newport. This trail lets you explore both of these fun SoCal beaches along a beautiful bike path. Stop at Wahoos in Huntington for some fish tacos after.

49. Explore the California State Railroad Museum and Old Town Sacramento

I love trains, but even if you don’t share that love, it is hard to think of anyone not enjoying the California State Railroad Museum in Old Town Sacramento. It is one of the best museums I have ever been to. Be sure to stroll the streets of Old Town Sacramento after visiting the museum.

50. Camp on Angel Island

While most people will visit Alcatraz when in San Francisco (which of course they should), Angel’s Island is a unique spot for a more private outdoor adventure. You can take a boat over and hike or camp on this island with views of San Francisco and little to no people.

51. Kayak the Sea Caves of La Jolla

La Jolla is a great spot for kayakers of all abilities to test out being in the open water. If you are more advanced though there are a few sea caves that you can navigate into which are unique to this stretch of Southern California coast.

52. Eat an Oyster from the Tomales Bay at Hog Island

Oysters are not everyone’s cup of tea, but if you haven’t had them directly from the water, then you should give them another try. Hog Island on Pacific Coast Highway is one of the most beautiful spots you will ever eat oysters, as they are pulled right out of the Tomales Bay in front of you.

53. Tour the Jelly Bean Factory

Located in Fairfield, the Jelly Bean Factory is really fun spot to explore with the whole family. Take the free tour and look out over the sea of jelly beans while getting to try each step of the creation process. I love the atmosphere they create here and eating jelly beans is just a plus.

54. Eat at a Thomas Keller Restaurant in Yountville

Thomas Keller is one of California’s most famous chefs. His main restaurant “The French Laundry” has been named the best restaurant in the world multiple times. While that spot is hard to get into and expensive you can opt to try one of his two other restaurants in the town of Yountville, my favorite is Bouchon. It’s a legit culinary adventure.

55. Harness your Inner Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison Museum

Folsom Prison was made famous by the Johnny Cash song and the concert he held in the prison. They created a small museum on site that talks about all of this and more prison history. It’s pretty crazy to go there and learn about the Johnny Cash influence while also seeing all of the different things prisoners have snuck in and other exhibits.

56. Explore the Ghost Town of Bodie

Bodie is California’s most well-preserved ghost town, and it is a blast for the whole family to visit. I always enjoy walking the streets and imagining life in this once booming town.

57. Climb the Mosiac Steps in San Francisco

This spot became popular during the rise of social media, but it is a great place for photography. You can climb the hundred or so mosaic steps; then when you get to the top, there is a park that gives you a fantastic view of San Francisco below.

58. Drive Through a Tree

Driving North on Highway 101, it is fun to pull off at one of the three drive-through trees for a fun photo.

59. Spelunk into the Caves of Pinnacles National Park

Pinnacles National Park is the newest National Park in the country, and because of that it is not very well known. The caves there are easily accessible by a short trail, and because of that, it is a unique way to get a non-guided tour cave experience.

60. See the Purple Sand of Pfeiffer Beach

Pfeiffer Beach is fantastic in its own right, but if you go right after the rain, then you will be in for a treat with the purple sand that comes down from the mountains behind it.

61. Tour the Crazy Winchester Mansion

This mansion was the brainchild of the heir to the Winchester Company fortune. She believed that she would die if she ever stopped building though, so the house has stairs that lead to nowhere, doors to brick walls and all sorts of craziness. It is so big that you walk over a mile while on the tour of it.

62. See the Dead Fish Beaches of the Salton Sea

Salton Sea is a lake that went through a massive chemical transition which killed nearly every fish that lived in it. Now it is an eerie yet beautiful spot. The state park itself has beaches with dead and decaying fish scattered all over them; it is something you have to see to believe.

63. Take a Selfie with Giant Paul Bunyon at Trees of Mystery

These 50-foot tall statues mark the entrance to the Trees of Mystery which is a fun tourist attraction in Northern California. You won’t be able to miss them when you drive up Highway 101 and why would you want to, they are awesome!

64. Find Out What the Santa Cruz Mystery Spot is All About

I am sure you have seen the bumper stickers for this crazy gravitational anomaly in Santa Cruz. It is a fun spot to bring the family and turn off your mind to marvel at the displays they created to mess with you.

65. Wander the Shores of Glass Beach

This is the beach where people threw trash, and the ocean returned beautiful pieces of glass. It is a stunning spot in Northern California with a small shore full of smooth pieces of glass.

66. Find all the Metal Statues in Anza Borrego

With over a hundred statues situated all around the park, it is an utter blast just to drive around and try and find them all. Many of them are massive like the above dragon and the scorpion, making them fantastic for photography and overall exploration.

67. Explore Olympic History in Squaw Valley

The Olympic Museum in Squaw Valley is only accessible via a tram that takes you to the top of the mountain. In the building situated on top of the mountain is the small museum itself. While there isn’t a lot to really see at the museum, it is super fun to take the tram up and see the massive Olympic Rings.

68. Hike the Rubicon Trail along Lake Tahoe

This trail goes from DL Bliss State Park to Emerald Bay. Along the way you see stunning views of the immaculate blue water stretching out in front of you. It is hard to find a more beautiful trail in the area.

69. Gaze Down at the Yosemite Valley from Taft Point

Another incredibly popular Instagram spot, I am still surprised by how many people have seen it but didn’t know how easy it was to get to. This 2-mile round trip hike is relatively flat, and it takes you to one of Yosemite’s best viewpoints.

70. W alk the Granite Steps up Moro Rock

Moro Rock in Sequoia is a short hike with anxiety-inducing granite steps that takes you to the top of a massive rock overlooking the valley. I recommend it at sunset but make sure to bring a flashlight for the walk back.

71. Visit a Bakery in Solvang

The Danish town of Solvang, along the Central Coast, is a great place to feel like you have left California. The city itself is entirely Danish inspired, and the bakeries all around town are home to some amazing pastries as well.

72. Eat at a Fairy Tale Restaurant in Santa Barbara

If you are talking about amazing places to eat, then no list would be complete without mentioning Cold Springs Tavern. With literally nothing around it, this spot has become a local favorite ever since it was a stagecoach stop over 100 years ago. Be sure to order the tri tip.

73. Indulge your Inner Movie Star at Paramount Ranch

The old movie town of Paramount Ranch is still a really popular filming location for Hollywood. Since it is on public property though, you can go explore it, even when they are filming. I love walking down the dirt streets and indulging my inner movie star here.

74. Explore the Underground Gardens of Fresno 

One of the most strange and unique spots along Highway 99, the Forestiere Underground Gardens in Fresno, are something you need to take a tour of to appreciate. The brainchild of one man over many decades, these gardens are a labyrinth of underground exploration.

75. Take a Ghost Tour of the Haunted Queen Mary

The Queen Mary is the famous ship that sits in the Long Beach Harbor and has become one of the state’s most popular museums. It is supposedly haunted and they have a fun tour that takes you on the ship and tells you about the haunting.

76. Learn at the Museums of Balboa Park

Balboa Park houses more than a dozen museums and is virtually impossible to explore without a few days. The museum’s are some of the best in the state with Museum of Man, Air and Space and the Miniature Train Museum being a few of my favorites.

77. Take the Boat to Alcatraz

Alcatraz is one of San Francisco’s most popular attractions and it is a fun spot to explore for a half day and get out of the city. Be sure to book the tour in advance though as it always books up fast.

78. Drive Historic Route 66

Route 66 ends in California. Because of that, there are a lot of adventures you can have on the Mother Road in the state. Some of the highlights for me are the original McDonalds Museum and Elmer’s Bottletree Ranch.

79. Stand on the Lowest Point in North America

Badwater in Death Valley is the lowest point in North America at -280 feet below sea level. The salt flats that stretch out before your eyes are stunning, just make sure not to go in the summer.

80. Spend a Night at Madonna Inn

Madonna Inn in San Luis Obispo is a hotel where every room is different. I love staying there and picking a new room each time. My favorite is the Old World Suite though with its rock waterfall shower and stone walls.

81. Explore California Literary History

Whether it is John Steinbeck’s Cannery Row, Mark Twain’s Angels Camp or Jack London’s Sonoma, there are so many ways you can dig into literary history all over the state.

82. Stand on the Unofficial Center of the World

Sure you really need to be committed to make it all the way to this spot, but the Unofficial Center of the World is located in California. Weirdly, it is not recognized by California itself but it is acknowledged by places like France and others. There are plenty of additional things to see here too like an original piece of the Effiel Tower.

83. Snorkel off Catalina Island

It is a joy to be able to get to an island off the coast of California after only a 45-minute drive and a 45-minute boat ride from Los Angeles. Catalina is a great spot to indulge in a slower island lifestyle for a few days and the snorkeling is the best you will find in California.

84. Wander Through an Aircraft Carrier at USS Midway

The aircraft carrier in the bay of San Diego is a great spot to bring the family and get lost exploring the massive boat. I have been a few times, and I still don’t think I have seen everything as I always seem to get lost going down all the different corridors.

85. Visit Hearst Castle

Heart Castle sits in the mountains above the central coast, and it is one of those spots I always skipped over on my trips. When I finally made it there, I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it though. It is such a crazy place full of immaculate rooms and pools, make sure to add it to your list.

86. Tour Mercer Caverns

Mercer Caverns is one of my favorite of the popular tour caves. This one has a lot of history, allows you to go deep into the cave itself and has sections where you feel like you are in an adventurous cave with steep staircases.

87. Walk out on Potato Chip Rock

Potato Chip Rock is a relatively polarizing spot in San Diego that many hikers love while other hate. I for one think it is a unique experience, so I recommend you do it if you want to get into hiking and see a fun payoff at the end.

88. Climb the Stairs to the Fire Lookout at Sierra Buttes

This hike is one of my favorites in the Tahoe area as it leads to a vertigo-inducing staircase and the ultimate payoff of a fire overlook that looks out over the area below. It is beautiful and well worth a spot on your hiking list.

89. Grab the Headlamp and Explore Lava Beds National Monument

One of the hardest to reach parks in California, Lava Beds is located in the Northern part of the state. It is an unusual spot with many really long caves that you can explore with a flashlight and a little courage.

90. Walk Across the Sundial Bridge

As you can tell, I love bridges and this one in Redding is different. It is fun to walk across as the bridge itself never actually touches the water below it.

91. Fly Over San Diego in a Biplane

While there are a ton of great experiences you can have in San Diego, I love seeing it from above. The best way I ever did that was by getting in a historic biplane and staring out over the coastline below.

92. Snowshoe to a Sequoia Grove

It is hard to ever be alone with some of the famous giant trees in Sequoia or Yosemite, but if you wait till it snows and strap on some snowshoes, then you can walk down to see the trees pretty much all by yourself.

93. Find a Mine in Joshua Tree National Park

Joshua Tree is full of gold mines with some being nothing but holes and others still having full stamp mills. The latter of which is my favorite and it is called Lost Horse Mine, but finding any of the mines in the park makes for a fun adventure.

94. Visit Elvis Honeymoon Home in Palm Springs

Many people do not know about this unique connection between Elvis and California, but it is actually where he spent his honeymoon. The house has stayed relatively the same since that time and it has become a draw for all of the Elvis lovers out there. I wouldn’t put myself in that camp but I still found it to be a really fun place to explore.

95. Stand Under California’s Tallest Bridge in Auburn

The Foresthill Bridge in Auburn is the tallest in the state, and it is pretty scary to look out over the edge of the bridge. There are even a few trails around the area that let you walk under it and marvel at how massive it truly is.

96. Wander Land’s End and the Sutro Baths

Land’s End is one of the most picturesque trails in all of San Francisco and it is a go-to for me in the area. The trail has fantastic coastal views, the Sutro Baths, and vista points for the Golden Gate Bridge.

97. Experience the Poppy Bloom in Antelope Valley State Park

When it is in bloom, Antelope Valley is a magical field of orange that stretches as far as the eye can see. It is highly dependent on the weather we have each year, but when it is right, the poppies are mind-blowing.

98. Tour Nit Witt Ridge

The poor man’s Hearst Castle, Nit Witt Ridge is a collection of trash, art and not following building codes that lead to this crazy mansion in Cambria. They offer tours a few times a week, and it is something I guarantee you will not have seen before.

99. Stare into the Ubehebe Crater

The Ubehebe Crater in Death Valley is just another of the natural wonders you can visit in this fascinating park. It is so massive though that you need to see it with your own eyes as pictures do not do it justice.

100. Eat a Burger Animal Style at In & Out

I figured I couldn’t let this list end without the quintessential California experience of eating In & Out. This burger joint is as California as anything on the list. If you are visiting then get a double-double animal style, you can thank me later.

Embarking on a journey to Tasmania, Australia, is like stepping into a realm where the familiar meets the extraordinary. For first-time visitors looking to start ticking bucket list destinations, Tasmania offers a unique blend of comfort and adventure – with a welcoming g'day. Nestled off the southern coast of the mainland, Tasmania boasts pristine wilderness, rugged coastlines and captivating wildlife.

I visited the island for the first time in May, the start of Australia's winter, and my jaw was on the floor most of the time there. Here's what you need to know before planning your own trip to Tassie.

1. The flights are exactly what you'd expect

There are no direct flights from the U.S. to Tasmania. You'll have to connect through Sydney or Melbourne to Launceston or Hobart. I went from Washington, D.C., to San Francisco to Melbourne to Launceston. It was terrible, I'm not going to lie. Next time I go, I'll spend a day on the West Coast before taking the U.S.-Australia 14-hour flight.

My recommendation is to take a red-eye flight to Australia and use it to sleep and switch over time zones.

Flight availability from the U.S. to Melbourne and Sydney (to transfer to Tasmania) is plentiful, with several major airlines offering regular routes. Travelers can choose from direct flights departing from major U.S. cities like Los Angeles, San Francisco, Houston, Dallas and even New York (with direct service to Auckland). Airlines such as United, American, Delta, Hawaiian, Qantas and Air New Zealand provide nonstop services.

(New direct service from Dallas to Brisbane via American Airlines is expected to launch in October, and from Los Angeles to Brisbane via Delta in December.)

2. Americans need a visa to enter the country

American travelers should be aware of the visa requirements before heading down under.

U.S. citizens need an Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) or an eVisitor visa, which can be easily obtained online before departure.

The process is straightforward, typically requiring basic personal information and a valid passport. Once approved, the visa allows for multiple entries into Australia for up to 90 days at a time over a 12-month period. I downloaded the Australian ETA app ( iOS and Android ), filled out a quick application, and my visa was granted in less than an hour.

3. Don't fret about the time zone difference

There's a 14-hour time difference from the U.S. East Coast. It sounds complicated but just embrace it.

The unique advantage of Tasmania’s 14-hour time difference is that you can truly disconnect and savor your vacation. The time zones down under can offer the perfect balance of relaxation and connectivity. Travelers can immerse themselves in the serene landscapes and vibrant culture during the day while still having a few hours in the morning and evening to connect with loved ones back home. It’s the ideal scenario for those seeking to unwind without completely losing touch.

4. Connection with nature

Travelers can immerse themselves in Tasmania's breathtaking nature through a variety of experiences.

At Cradle Mountain in Lake St. Clair National Park, visitors can hike rugged trails and take in stunning alpine views. If you visit at night, you can enjoy a view of cute wildlife with McDermotts Coaches .

But it's OK if you don't enjoy hiking. For a unique adventure, truffle hunting with The Truffle Farm in Deloraine offers another way to explore the island's culinary practices. Wine enthusiasts can savor the flavors of Tasmania at the Clover Hill winery in Lebrina, known for its exquisite sparkling wines and picturesque vineyards.

Whether it's trekking through pristine landscapes, foraging for gourmet treats, or indulging in fine wines, Tasmania offers something for every nature lover.

5. Nothing is likely to kill you

We've all seen social media videos of Australians battling snakes or large spiders, but you can relax.

Fear of wildlife often looms large for travelers, but Tasmania is free of large predators, making it a haven for nature enthusiasts. Here, you can explore lush forests and pristine coastlines without the fear of being eaten.

Tasmania’s unique ecosystem is home to creatures like Tasmanian devils (which are incredibly rare to spot – I also didn't), puggles, platypuses, pademelons, wombats and wallabies, ensuring a safe and enriching experience for all visitors.

There are three kinds of snakes in Tasmania and while two of them can be dangerous to humans, it is extremely rare to encounter them, according to Tourism Australia.

6. The food scene has something for everyone

You will not go hungry in Tasmania. Far from it.

Tasmania's food scene is a vibrant tapestry of flavors, reflecting the island's culinary influences. From fresh seafood caught in pristine waters to farm-to-table produce, there's something for every palate. Influences from British, Mediterranean, and Asian cuisines converge, creating a unique gastronomic experience. Visitors can savor everything from gourmet dining in Hobart’s top restaurants to artisanal cheese and local wine in countryside eateries.

The coffee scene deserves a special mention. The great people of Melbourne will claim they have the best coffee in the world, but Tasmania is right there with them.

7. Easy access to a different side of the world

3 expert tips on what to do in Calgary, Alberta

One of the most notable events in the city is the Calgary Stampede, which takes place from July 5 to July 14 this year, but heading to the city in June will let visitors experience the pre-Stampede events.

"The Calgary Stampede is one of the best and most exciting outdoor shows on earth," Lindsay highlighted. "Enjoy rodeo competitions, chuckwagon races, concerts, delicious food, and lively entertainment throughout the city during this iconic event, with your best cowboy hat, of course."

For history buffs, Heritage Park Historical Village is a great stop in the city.

"This park offers a glimpse into Western Canada's past with over 180 exhibits, including historic buildings, costumed interpreters, and vintage rides," Lindsay highlighted. "In June, you can enjoy special events and interactive activities that showcase the region's rich heritage."

While Banff is outside of Calgary, this destination is a must-see stop. There's a reason so many people travel to Banff National Park all year round, often referred to as the most beautiful place in the world .

Where to stay in Calgary, Alberta

In you're staying in the city, the four-star Fairmont Palliser is the perfect historic and luxurious stay that's been in operation for more than 100 years, and close to attractions like Calgary Tower and Calgary Zoo. It also has then Royal Suite where Queen Elizabeth II stayed on her 1990 visit to Calgary. Guests can enjoy spa treatments at the rnr Wellness spa and the Hawthorn Dining Room & Bar for a great meal.
