It helps to know a few important terms before we dive deep into the review process. Especially when it comes to the difference between Dry Weight, GVWR, and your tow vehicle’s maximum towing capacity. 

This is the weight of the unladen trailer when it is completely empty and devoid of camping gear. 

Stands for Gross Vehicle Weight Rating, and this is the maximum weight that the travel trailer can be, based on the frame, suspension, axle, and other structural considerations.

Payload Capacity

This is the weight or “Cargo” camping equipment and personal items that the manufacturer estimates can be safely loaded into the trailer. When you add dry weight and maximum payload capacity together you get the maximum GVWR for the travel trailer. 

Taken in this light it is possible for a travel trailer with a dry weight of less than 5,000-pounds can be overloaded with cargo to the point where it has a real-world gross weight of over 5,000-pounds. 

Maximum Towing Capacity

So, they went back to the drawing board to create the Jayco – Jay Feather Micro 171BH, which has a dry weight of just 3,930 pounds, which is well within the towing capacity of most midsize SUVs like the popular Ford Explorer. 

Though there is still a potential weight problem with the Jayco – Jay Feather Micro 171BH in that it has a payload capacity of up to 1,065 pounds.

This means if you absolutely stuff this travel trailer to the gills it can carry a gross weight of up to 4,995-pounds, which pushes the limits of what a vehicle with a 5,000-pound towing capacity can safely pull.

Though in the real world, unless you have an obsessive hoarding problem, I think you would be challenged to come up with over a thousand pounds worth of “Essential” camping gear. 

Assuming you can keep your packing within reason and you are willing to travel most of the journey to your campground with dry water storage tanks, you will be treated to a bunkhouse travel trailer for a family that wants to travel light.

It has a queen bed in the front, a pair of bunk beds in the back, and a midship kitchen with everything you need to cook a family meal. There is even a complete bathroom in the back with a shower basin that is deep enough to bathe a small child. 

2. Lance TT 2185

Though the staggeringly high 2,435 pounds of payload capacity invite an almost abusive amount of cargo, that can push the real-world gross weight way over 5,000 pounds. 

Ultimately, it means that if you need to stay under 5,000-pounds of gross weight to meet the safe towing capacity of your intended tow vehicle, then you need to load the Lance – TT 2185 sparingly.

Then make it a point to travel with the fresh and wastewaters storage tanks empty. 

Assuming you can keep the Lance – TT 2185 within a reasonable towing range, you will be treated to a premium bunkhouse travel trailer. The interior decor feels more like what you would expect to see in a destination travel trailer of a large motorhome.

Third, it comes with a special technology that allows you to level it easily using your smartphone. Because it is fitted with this technology, you can level it easily whenever you want regardless of the light conditions. 

Lastly, it is available in six other floor plan options (the other trailers in the Sonic line). Not many bunkhouse travel trailers have multiple floor plan options. Some of the floor plans include bunks while others include slide-outs. I like slide-outs because they increase space. However, they can be a hassle to maintain. This SN220VBH model has 1 slide-out.

In addition to the four things above that stand out about this Venture RV trailer, it comes with sizeable bunk beds at the back end. The beds are big enough for tall teenagers. You can also use them to sleep with several adult guests. 

Unfortunately, this bunkhouse travel trailer does not come with a master bedroom. However, it does come with a Murphy bed that can be set in the living space at night. Instead of a master bedroom, this Venture RV trailer comes with a decent-sized bathroom that includes a toilet, a sink, and a tub.

KZ Company makes some of the most amazing and affordable recreational vehicles in the United States. This bunkhouse travel trailer is part of the company’s Sportsmen Classic line of travel trailers as its name suggests. The company developed this line of travel trailers to be lightweight enough to be hauled even by mid-size SUVs.

This particular KZ Sportsmen Classic travel trailer model weighs just 2,840 pounds. This means that it is extremely lightweight and can be hauled even by mid-size SUVs such as the Dodge Durango, the Land Rover Discovery, and the Land Rover Range Rover Sport.

While the fact that this travel trailer can be hauled by a mid-size SUV is impressive, what I like the most about it is that it comes with a free and innovative smartphone app called the KZ RV app. The app includes several checklists to enable you to prepare the trailer adequately for long trips. It also has maintenance and service information/ features to enable you to closely monitor the health of the multiple systems in your travel trailer.

In my opinion, this particular KZ Sportsmen Classic travel trailer (181BH) is the best in the KZ Sportsmen Classic line of travel trailers. This is because it is extremely functional. However, if for some reason you do not like it, there are 8 other models in the Sportsmen Classic line for you to consider. 

If you like this particular model, then I am sure you will like it even more when you hear that it can comfortably sleep six people. Yes, you read that right. This lightweight bunkhouse travel trailer can accommodate six people. This is because it has a large master bedroom in the front, a set of normal-sized bunk beds in the rear, and a dinette that can be converted into a sleeping area for two at night.

You will like sleeping in this trailer’s master bed because it has overhead storage and a plug on both sides. 

In addition to the above-mentioned features and amenities, this travel trailer comes with a great bathroom, a kitchen, and all the other basics. 

Its open-concept design and features make it perfect for large families. So get it if you have multiple kids or you want to travel as a small group of adults.

3. Jayco Jay Flight 174BH 

Before I tell you more about the trailer, let me tell you something about its manufacturer. The travel trailer is made by Jayco – one of the most successful RV manufacturers in the world! The company is renowned for making superior quality recreational vehicles and the fact that this is one of the best-selling ones means it is also definitely superior quality.

The thing I love the most about this trailer is its smart design. The design makes it easy to tow (it doesn’t affect gas mileage significantly). It also makes it stunning and very livable. 

As mentioned above, this is a bunkhouse travel trailer. In other words, it comes with bunk-style beds. In addition to the bunk-style beds, it features a master bed. You and your family can use the two bunk beds or the master bed without having to convert or move anything. 

The master bed is very comfortable with a thick mattress, while the two bunk beds have four-inch-thick mattresses for comfortable sleeping. So if you get this Jayco travel trailer both you and your family will be sleeping comfortably at night.

This Jayco Jay Flight model is available in five other ways. Some have bunk-style sleeping while others do not. So if you do not like it but you like its overall design, you should consider the other options.

The living area in this model is one of the best things about it. It is quite spacious. One of the reasons is that the master bed is sideways (its side touches the front wall instead of the sidewalls of the trailer).

One of the things that is quite obvious about the Jayco Jay Flight 174BH is that it has plenty of storage areas. This makes it easy to store things and to keep it tidy.

Lastly, this bunkhouse travel trailer has a three-year structural warranty. This is pretty impressive and it is not common in the RV industry. It also indicates that the company makes top-quality products. So if you are looking for a stylish bunkhouse trailer, that has plenty of storage areas, and is top quality, you should strongly consider it.

4. Coachmen Clipper Ultra-Lite 252DBUS 

This particular Coachmen Clipper Ultra-Lite model 252DBUS weighs 4,783 pounds and it is definitely light. Other Clipper models such as the 18BHS and the 18BH weigh even less in dry weight (less than 3,789 pounds). However, in my opinion, this 252DBUS model is one of the best Coachmen Clipper models despite being heavier. 

Despite several Clipper models existing, they all have the same aerodynamic design. This, in addition to their lightweightness, is what makes all of them easy to tow. They are also well-rated in terms of energy, water, and resource efficiency. Their indoor air quality is also better than the indoor air quality of other travel trailers.

Now let’s get more specific. The Clipper 252DBUS is a bunkhouse travel trailer. It features a queen-size bed in the front and a pair of decent-size bunk beds in the rear. The queen-size bed is in its own room while the bunk beds have privacy curtains. Therefore, at night, everyone in this bunkhouse travel trailer can sleep in private.

The master bedroom has overhead storage and wardrobes. There are other storage spaces throughout the trailer. Even the bunk beds can be flipped up and locked to create more storage space. So if you are looking for a bunkhouse travel trailer with plenty of storage space, you should strongly consider this Coachmen Clipper Ultra-Lite model.

The bathroom in this 18BH Coachmen Clipper is relatively big. It comes with a toilet, a nice tub, and a sink.

Other things, features, and amenities you will find in this trailer include laminated countertops, hardwood cabinet doors, linoleum flooring, tinted safety glass windows, baggage doors, and overhead cabinets. This Coachmen Clipper model also comes with a high-performance fireplace and a roof strong enough that anyone can walk on it.

In summary, this Coachmen is certainly a great bunkhouse trailer by most standards.

5. Lance Camper 2185 

Over the years, the company has developed ten distinct travel trailer models. The Lance Camper 2185 is one of them. In my opinion, it is one of the best bunkhouse travel trailers just over 5,000 pounds. Read on to find out why.

First of all, the Lance Camper 2185 has an automated camper awning. The awning is easy to open and it provides a beautiful sleek shade for outdoor relaxation in the wild or in RV parking areas. The awning can automatically retract when the wind is too strong to prevent damage.

Second, it has an impressive cargo-carrying capacity of 2,555 pounds. Not many travel trailers have this impressive cargo-carrying capacity. The cargo-carrying capacity of 2,555 pounds means you can use it to carry everything you need for a comfortable/ luxurious camping trip or wilderness adventure.

Third, the Lance Camper 2185 is available in three styles. It is up to you to decide which style works for you best. 

Fourth, this bunkhouse travel trailer features two sleeping areas. The first one is an amazing set of three bunk beds in the back and the second one is a walk-around queen-styled master bed. The three bunk beds can sleep three adults and the master bed can sleep two people. The master bed can be converted into a sofa bed if the need arises.

The Forest River Flagstaff Micro Lite 25BRDS weighs just 5,499 pounds. So while it is not under 5,000 pounds, it is definitely close and lightweight. This means it is totally within the hauling capacity of the majority of minivans and SUVs on the market. In other words, if you buy it you will most likely not need to buy a new vehicle to tow it unless your primary vehicle is a sedan.

All Forest River Micro Lite travel trailers are lightweight but only three models including this 25BRDS model have bunk beds. This model has the largest bunk beds. They are located in the rear and they are big enough even for adults to comfortably sleep on. There is a privacy curtain that separates them from the rest of the trailer and they both have a window for viewing the outside.

In addition to the bunk beds, this bunkhouse travel trailer comes with a Queen-style Murphy bed that you can easily set up at night in the living area. The bed has a thick mattress for comfortable restorative sleep. During the day, the bed needs to be folded to accommodate a sofa and tables.

Moreover, this Forest River trailer comes with a dinette, a nice kitchen area, and multiple kitchen appliances and amenities for easy food preparation. The trailer also comes with a decent-size fully-functional bathroom. It is certainly a brilliant bunkhouse trailer.

7. Forest River R-Pod Travel Trailer RP-193

The travel trailer design might be small (measures about 20 feet) but it has plenty of exciting features that make it a great bunkhouse travel trailer below 5,000 pounds.

We toured hundreds of RVs at this year’s Florida RV SuperShow , and the Keystone Cougar Half-Ton 30BHS was by far my favorite bunkhouse floorplan. The unique layout includes rear bunks that extend the width of the RV.

The position of the bunks creates a separate area for kids and makes the beds more accessible. In the front of the RV is a large, private bedroom with a king bed. The bathroom sits between the living area and the bedroom.

The main living area includes an L-shaped dinette, a tri-fold sofa and a fireplace. The kitchen has a full range, a microwave, a double sink, a 12 volt fridge and plenty of counterspace. Arched rafters create a spacious interior with 7 foot ceilings.

Best Large Bunkhouse Travel Trailers

Campers with a big budget will love these enormous bunkhouse travel trailers with luxury features. Enjoy glamping all over the country without having to worry about feeling cramped.

Crossroads Volante VL32FB

Length: 35 feet, 11 inches

The Crossroads Volante VL32FB is a beautiful travel trailer with lots of practical features. The front of the RV houses a private, secondary bedroom with queen over queen bunks, a large wardrobe closet and a chic wood panel wall.

In the back of the trailer is the main bedroom with a king bed and its own entry door. The dual entry bathroom sits beside the rear bedroom.

The rear of the RV houses an entire kids’ suite. Inside the suite is a private bedroom with a single over double bunk bed, a shirt closet and a half bathroom. In the front of the trailer is a main bedroom with a queen bed and a full bathroom.

In the main living area, there is a dinette booth and a large sofa. The corner kitchen features bright, white cabinets and stainless steel appliances. Perhaps the most unique feature of this RV is the huge pantry, located behind the TV next to the entry door.

Venture SportTrek ST333VIK

Length: 37 feet, 8 inches

Another amazing (and enormous) rear bunkhouse travel trailer is the Venture SportTrek ST333VIK. The bunkroom includes a normal height single bed, and a raised top bunk which sits over a storage cabinet.

The lower bed is perfect both for smaller children who are at risk of falling from higher bunks and teenagers who need more headroom. The huge bunkroom is also great for teenagers because it also has a sofa (with another flip-up bunk above it), a table and a flip-up desk.

Outside the bunkroom is a full (second) bathroom. The other bathroom is located in the front of the trailer next to the main bedroom with a queen bed.

While the bunkroom is the star of this RV, the main living area does not disappoint either. With the optional king dinette, the combination sofa/dining area can comfortably seat 5 to 6 people. The large kitchen has an island and a hutch that makes a perfect coffee station.

Keystone Hideout 38FKTS

Length: 39 feet, 11 inches

Mid-bunk floorplans are super common in fifth wheel RVs, but rare in travel trailers. The Hideout 28FKTS is the best mid-bunk travel trailer available.

The bunkroom includes a upper bunk with a cube bunk below. The cubes can be moved around and used as chairs during the day. A wardrobe, which doubles as a desk completes the room.

The main bedroom has a queen bed and is located in the rear of the trailer. The full bath sits between the two bedrooms. In the main living area, there is a dinette booth, a recliner and a trifold sofa. The front kitchen has white cabinets and tons of storage space.

So aside from the weight, what are the main things you’re looking for in an RV under 5,000 pounds? Here are a few questions that can help you decide.

• How many people will be staying in the RV? Just you and your partner? Or will the kids/grandkids/a few dogs be coming along from time to time?
• Where do you want to go with your camper? Across the country? To campgrounds in your local area? National parks? Back roads? Dirt roads? Off the grid? Everywhere!!?
• How long will you be staying in your RV? Mostly long weekends? Maybe 2 weeks or more?
• Do you need space for hauling other gear? Bikes, kayaks, camping furniture, etc.?
• Do you prefer cooking and eating in your travel trailer or outside under an awning?
• What features are most likely to annoy you over time? A super cramped bathroom? A tiny kitchen? A bed that doesn’t let you spread out?
• Do you prefer a smaller camper and better gas mileage or do you want the biggest travel trailer your vehicle can tow?

The fact is, you’ll probably have to make some compromises with a 5,000-lb travel trailer. Don’t expect a bathtub, queen-size bed, gigantic kitchen, and an espresso bar to fit in a travel trailer that weighs less than 5,000 pounds. (Although you’ll be surprised what they fit in some of these options!)

That’s why it’s important to determine your priorities. Let’s say you want a bathroom with plenty of space. Then maybe you can deal with a smaller kitchen as long as your RV has a decent size toilet and shower.

Another thing that’s important to understand before selecting a travel trailer is all the weight terms.

How to Understand Travel Trailer Weight Terms

So what are all these acronyms anyway? UVW, GVRW, CCC… it sounds like a list of secret government agencies, right!?

Let’s have a quick look at these terms. 

UVW: Unloaded Vehicle Weight

The UVW or unloaded vehicle weight is…drum roll please…the weight of an unloaded travel trailer! Amazing! LOL! It’s also sometimes referred to as the “dry weight”. Basically, it’s the travel trailer as it comes from the factory before you add propane, water, accessories, suitcases, snacks, and maple syrup. 

What this means for you: If you’re looking for a 5,000-lb travel trailer, you’ll need to find one with a UVW or dry weight that’s less than 5,000 pounds. 

Cargo Carrying Capacity (CCC)

The CCC or cargo carrying capacity is the maximum permitted weight of the cargo you load up in your trailer. That will include accessories, fuel, water, camping supplies, passengers, etc. Oh, and of course maple syrup!

GVWR: Gross Vehicle Weight Rating

The GVWR or gross vehicle weight rating is the maximum permitted weight of the RV. Basically, it’s the combined weight of the CCC and the UVW. This is an important figure to look for when searching for the best travel trailer under 5,000 lbs.  

Gross Combined Weight Rating (GCWR)

The GCWR or gross combined weight rating (say that 5 times fast, I dare you!) is the maximum allowable weight of both your vehicle and trailer. This includes all the weight of what you’ve got loaded in your towing vehicle (passengers, coolers, suitcases, firewood), plus your trailer and everything in it. Check for this on the inside of your vehicle’s door frame or in your vehicle’s owner’s manual.

Those four are some of the most common terms to look for when searching for a lightweight camper trailer.

What Kind of Vehicle Can Tow a Travel Trailer Under 5,000 lbs?

Most mid-size and full-size trucks with 6-cylinder engines or bigger have at least a 5,000-lb towing capacity. Still, before spending money on an RV, it’s best to double-check. 

It’s really important to check the towing capacity of your vehicle if it’s an SUV, small or mid-size truck, minivan, crossover, or large car. Its towing capacity can vary by several thousand pounds depending on the trim level, tow package, and engine size. 

Just as an example…2WD models of the Honda Pilot can tow up to 3,500 pounds. But the AWD models are rated to tow up to 5,000 pounds. That’s why it’s important to check!

So if you haven’t done so already, get out your owner’s manual or do a quick search online and get the towing capacity for the exact vehicle you plan to tow your RV with.

Please keep in mind that these are not ranked from best to worst or prettiest to ugliest. The best camper under 5,000 lbs for you will depend on your needs, budget, and vehicle. Choose one that works for you and then get out there and enjoy the outdoors!

IMPORTANT! There are soooo many different models and variations of these trailers, it’ll make your head spin. For some on this list, I do feature a specific model for specific situations (just couples, couples with kids, people who prefer big bathrooms, etc.). And for others, I’ll direct you to a specific model line of travel trailers with several options under 5,000 pounds. 

Let’s get started with an iconic travel trailer, the Airstream!

1. Airstream Bambi Travel Trailer

Classic Airstream design in a smaller package.

Pros : All of the models in the Bambi line have a GVWR of 5,000 pounds or less.

Cons : A little pricey with the 2023 Bambi starting at $59,300.

Enjoy the iconic Airstream travel trailers with everything people enjoy about the bigger ones, just in a compact package. The Bambi models have the same curved aluminum design and attention to detail as their bigger brothers. 

The Airstream Bambi comes in four different lengths from 16-22 feet. All are one axle and come in at under 5,000 pounds. The shortest 16-feet long model has a GVWR of just 3,500 pounds. That means you can even tow it with a Subura Outback (as long as it has the 2.4L turbo engine).

All of the floor plans make nice use of space. Each one – including the short 16’ model – has dedicated sleeping areas. That means they have a bed, that’s always a bed – no need to disassemble a dining table or flip open a couch in order to hit the sack.

2. Airstream Basecamp

A modern, adventurous take on a classic.

Pros: Excellent choice for adventures on the go. It’s small and rugged enough to visit areas off the beaten path while still providing needed comfort.

Cons: The 16 is best for couples since it only has one sleeping area. Go with the 20 if you have kids. 

If you like the freedom to take on some dirt roads and dispersed camping, the Airstream Basecamp and Basecamp X are really nice choices. Just like the classic Airstreams, the Basecamps are really well-built with lots of have practical features.

For example, the Basecamp, in addition to the side entry door, has a rear hatch you can open for easy gear storage. Just open it up and slide in skis, bikes, and even a kayak or two. 

Even the smallest 16-foot models come with a wet bath, galley, and large seating area. The Basecamp 20 has an additional seating area that converts to a bed for a small child or two.

If you need a more rugged version, go with the Basecamp X. It’s got a 3” lift, more rugged tires, and an increased departure angle to handle rougher roads.

And fortunately, the basecamp is designed to be towed by SUVs and small trucks. Even the largest Basecamp 20X has a GVWR of just 4,300 pounds.

3. Little Guy Mini Max

It’s amazing what they fit in this tiny trailer.

Pros: Has an ultralight dry weight of just 2,320 pounds. But you still get a wet bath, microwave, 5.0 cu. ft. refrigerator, and tons of natural light with the stargazer window.

Cons: Probably a bit too small for couples with kids.

It’s amazing how much they’ve managed to fit in this ultralight travel trailer. In addition to the dinette area, which converts into a bed, the kitchenette with a sink, stove, and microwave, it also has a surprisingly roomy wetbath. 

There are plenty of windows and natural light which make it seem less claustrophobic inside. There’s even an optional stargazer window above the dinette/bed that lets in even more natural light. 

With a dry weight of 2,320 pounds and a GVWR of 3,500 pounds, this is a great travel trailer for couples with a small towing vehicle

4. Oliver Legacy Elite

Luxury features in a compact and well-built trailer.

Pros: Surprisingly comfortable for such a small travel trailer. Nice for RVing in the colder months thanks to its double-hulled fiberglass shell.

Cons: 2022 models start at $57,000, but they do come standard with a lot of nice options.

If you want a travel trailer under 5,000-lbs with a luxurious feel, you’ll love the Oliver Legacy Elite. With just a quick look at the exterior, you might mistake its fiberglass construction for one of the more popular fiberglass travel trailers like the Casita or Scamp. 

But take a closer look and you’ll see the difference. The Oliver Legacy Elite was designed to be durable, easy to use, and super comfortable. It’s well-lit, both inside and out, with most of the interior lamps being touch-activated. Even the closets and upper molded fiberglass storage have interior lighting!

Little details, like the dovetailed birch drawers with soft-close hinges and a residential-style thermostat to control the furnace and A/C make the Oliver Legacy Elite feel more like a home and less like an RV.

Quick Insider Tip for Choosing Your New Lightweight Camper

Seeing an ultralight RV’s video tour or checking it out for a few minutes at an RV show is one thing. Actually camping in it for a few days is another. This is especially true if you’ve never camped before in a small travel trailer.

That’s why I HIGHLY suggest renting before buying.  RVshare is a really nice option for doing that.

5. KZ Sportsmen Classic Ultra Lightweight Camper Trailer

Pro: From tiny trailers with outdoor kitchens to longer toy haulers, every single one has a GVWR of 5,000 pounds or less.

Con: Its lightweight construction and budget-friendly price mean it’s not as rugged and durable as the more expensive options.

If you’re looking for options that provide the utility and space your family needs without breaking the bank, check out the KZ Sportsmen Classic Ultra Lightweight line of trailers. 

There are tons of different floor plans to choose from. If you’re a couple looking for a step up from a teardrop style trailer, go with the short 100RK. It’s got a queen size bed inside and an interior height of over 6’. Then on the backside, there’s a truck door that opens for access to an exterior kitchen with a sink and refrigerator. This one’s nice for small SUVs since the UVW is only 1,770 pounds!

On the other end of the spectrum, you’ve got options like the 190BH complete with a queen bed, linen closet, bathroom, and bunk beds for the kids. And there are also two toy hauler options for active family adventures.

6. Jayco Jay Flight SLX 7

Nice variety of floor plans that make excellent use of space.

Pros: Nice selection of floor plans for families with kids. Some even feature queen size beds, bunk beds, a bathroom with tub, and a dinette that converts to another bed.

Cons: Build quality is on par with other budget-friendly ultra-lightweight RVs.

Jayco has really packed a lot into the floor plans on these travel trailers. I mean… an 18-foot model with a large dinette/bed, bunk beds, plus a bathroom with an actual tub? Albeit, a small tub…but a tub!

These are some really nice options if you’ll be camping with your kids or grandkids but don’t have the vehicle to pull a longer RV.

7. Scamp Trailers

Tiny, simple, classic fiberglass travel trailers.

Pros: Simple, inexpensive, and lightweight. Even some 13’ models are available with a small wetbath.

Cons: Interiors look a little dated, even on the newer models. Just think of it as slightly retro.

No list of lightweight travel trailers would be complete without the classic Scamp molded fiberglass RVs. Depending on the configuration, they start at about 1,200 pounds for the 13-foot models. That means even some well-equipped crossovers can tow one!

Only the largest 19-foot fifth-wheel models have a full-time bed. All the other models have a dinette that converts into a bed. One of the really convenient features of even the shortest Scamp trailers is that they’re available with a wetbath. It’s small, but that’s not common to find on such small travel trailers.

8. Coachmen Clipper Ultra-Lite Travel Trailer 17FQS

A great first trailer for couples. 

Pros: It’s got a huge bathroom for such a small trailer. And with the dinette slideout, there’s plenty of space to move around inside.

Cons: Not a lot of countertop space in the kitchen.

If you’ll mostly be camping as a couple and prefer a space that feels more like home and less like a travel trailer, this Coachmen Clipper 17FQS is a sold choice. 

Unlike most 20’ RVs, this actually has a comfortably sized bathroom that’s probably bigger than a lot of apartment bathrooms. You don’t need to be a contortionist in order to get in the shower or sit on the toilet. And the vanity has enough space for a coffee pot! (See the video tour)

And the GVWR is well below 5,000 pounds at just 4,251 pounds!

9. Winnebago HIKE

Built for the adventurer.

Pros: It’s built for rough roads and easy adventure gear storage. The unique exoskeleton makes it really easy to strap outdoor gear like kayaks and bikes to the outside.

Cons: With an interior width of less than 7 feet, it’s narrower than most other trailers of the same length.

If your RVing adventures take you from the local campground to long dirt roads, the Winnebago HIKE is the lightweight RV for you. 

The first thing you’ll notice is the exoskeleton. It really does a nice job of improving the trailer’s utility for strapping down some kayaks or stringing up a clothesline. It comes standard with off-road tires, durable fenders, and multi-use gear storage areas. 

While all of these travel trailers have a dry weight of under 4,500-lbs, only the 20’ models have a GVWR of 4,200 lbs. The longer 25’ versions have a GVWR of 6,000 pounds.

10. Rove Lite Ultra Lightweight Travel Trailers

Light on weight, big on features.

Pros: It’s pretty awesome to be able to find a 16’+ length camper trailer with a dry weight of less than 2,000 pounds!

Cons: Low ceiling height isn’t good if you’re over 6 feet tall.

If you’ve got a small SUV or large crossover and can’t settle for a pop-up camper or a tiny teardrop, the Rove Lite Ultra Lightweight trailers are for you. 

These RVs weigh just a hair more than the tiny 13-foot Scamp trailers thanks to a unique construction method. However thanks to the extra length, the living space feels waaay roomier inside. 

They give you three different floor plans to choose from. Each includes a wet bath and kitchen in addition to a combination of a sofa bed and dinette that converts into a bed.

11. TAXA Mantis and Cricket

For the adventure seeker whose main goal is to enjoy the outside.

Pros: Rugged and ready for adventure. They’re also available in overlanding versions which are great for extended trips in rough, off-grid areas.

Cons: If you’re just staying on paved roads and established campgrounds, these travel trailers might not be the best for you. Other options provide more space and comforts at the same towing weight. 

The Taxa Outdoors Habitats definitely stand out. Their Nasa inspired design resembles a moon lander more than a traditional RV. But don’t let their funky looks scare you off. 

These are great options for the adventure-loving family who likes to spend their camping trips on dirt roads and out-of-the-way areas. They’re hybrid trailers with a pop-top for extra headroom and ventilation. 

The Cricket and Mantis models both have GVWRs of less than 5,000 pounds. Even the Mantis Overland with its extra ground clearance, off-road tires and Timbren axle-less suspension has a GVWR of exactly 5,000 pounds.

Advantages of Lightweight Travel Trailers Under 5,000 lbs

At first, it can be a little discouraging when you own a small SUV or van and are shopping for travel trailers you can tow. But fortunately, as you saw with the 11 options on my list, you really can get the bells and whistles of much larger RVs in some surprisingly compact travel trailers. 

Even if your vehicle has the towing capacity to pull a larger RV, there are still advantages to sticking with a smaller camper under 5,000 lbs. 

Easier to Maneuver

If you’ve ever tried to back a 35-foot trailer into a tight camping spot, you know how frustrating it can be to maneuver a long trailer, especially without one of these backup cameras ! So what you give up on storage space, you make up for with manuverability.

Save on Gas Mileage

This is a nice advantage especially if you’re planning long road trips with your travel trailers. Not only will sub-5,000 pound RVs be cheaper to purchase, but they’ll be easier on your gas bill as well. 

Small Travel Trailers are Better for Exploring

This advantage goes hand in hand with the first one. Get a small travel trailer under 5,000 pounds and you won’t be limited on where you can go. You’ll be able to park at just about any campsite and drive down your favorite back-country roads.

About Bunkhouse Travel Trailers

Bunkhouse travel trailers are favored by families with older children who can’t share the same bed. In addition to freeing up floor space, the bunkhouse configuration provides each member of the group with the privacy they need.

RV manufacturers understand that there’s a growing market for this type of trailer. As a result, the leading brands offer a myriad of options, from 20-foot models to sprawling fifth-wheel trailers that resemble luxury apartments. Since smaller travel trailers are easier to tow and more cost-effective overall, it’s nice to have so many lightweight options to choose from.

Important Considerations

Once you’ve narrowed your search to include only bunkhouse travel trailers, think about what other features you might enjoy.

If you frequently travel through cooler regions, you might enjoy a built-in fireplace. Foodies will want to seek out a well-appointed kitchen, preferably with a stove that includes at least three burners. Boondockers—people who enjoy camping off the grid —would prefer a travel trailer with a decent bathroom and a stall shower.

Once you know what you’d like to get out of your camping experience, finding the right bunkhouse travel trailer should be a cinch.

Best Bunkhouse Travel Trailers Under 5000Lbs: Product Review Guide

This Coachmen Clipper 21BH has one of our favorite layouts, not to mention a host of useful appliances that are sure to enrich your time on the road.

To the right of the entrance, you’ll find a queen-sized bed flanked by wardrobes on either side. The main living area is outfitted with a convertible dinette, pantry, and kitchen with double sink and three-burner range. A generously sized refrigerator can be found to the left-hand side of the dinette.

In the rear of the trailer are the bunk beds, a single set measuring 28 inches wide by 72 inches long. This bunkhouse is a tad cramped, as it shares the rear space with the rather large bathroom. The good news? This bathroom includes a full-sized tub as well as a shower, with a linen closet and medicine cabinet to round out the amenities. Unfortunately, whoever sleeps in the bunk beds will be sharing a wall with the toilet.

The Jayco Jay Flight SLX 174BH has a configuration similar to that of the previous offering. The main difference is the positioning of the queen-sized bed, which faces the entry wall instead of the rear of the trailer. In our opinion, this is rough on the person who gets the inside half of the bed, but that’s a minor quibble.

The dinette is long yet snug, with an overhead storage cabinet directly overhead. The kitchen amenities include a microwave, pantry, sink, compact refrigerator, and two-burner range. Considering the cozy conditions, the counter offers a decent amount of prep space.

The rear bunkhouse is adjacent to the bathroom facilities and equipped with a set of narrow single bunks. Like the Coachmen Clipper, the SLX 174BH includes a tub/shower combination. Be forewarned that there’s no sink in the bathroom—you’ll have to exit to the kitchen area if you want to wash your hands.

The Sportsmen Classic 181BH is a stick-built trailer, meaning its frame is built of aluminum rather than fiberglass. That makes its low dry weight of 2840 pounds even more impressive. Construction materials aside, however, this is a minimalist yet comfortable travel trailer that includes everything a small family should need.

The queen-sized bed takes up the entire front section of the trailer, with pass-through storage located overhead. At the foot of the bed is a convertible dinette, but we wouldn’t recommend using it as a bed except on very rare occasions. When it’s converted, the living space becomes uncomfortably cramped.

The kitchen includes a sink, two-burner range, and refrigerator, but not a ton of storage or counter space. The bunk beds are large enough to accommodate young teenagers, measuring 28 by 75 inches. Bathroom facilities are minimal, featuring just a toilet and stall shower. This isn’t a luxury option, but it’s just right for families of three to four people who want a slight upgrade from tent camping.

Of all the units listed so far, the Lance 2185 offers the most privacy—for those dwelling in the rear bunkhouse as well as the master bedroom. It features dual entry, with one door located in the rear and the other adjacent to the queen-sized bed. This allows for easy access to the bathroom when you’re outside enjoying nature.

The galley-style kitchen offers a large sink, three-burner range, refrigerator, and overhead storage. A tiny entertainment center offers travel trailer something to look at while relaxing at the U-shaped dinette. There’s also an adequate amount of storage available in the master bedroom, with twin wardrobes and additional space available under the bed.

The rear bunks are situated just to the left of the rear entrance, with the toilet and shower just across the hall. A second sink is located on the right-hand side of the entrance, making it possible to wash your hands just before exiting the trailer. Because this means we don’t have to touch as many handles after washing up, we find this to be an especially nice touch.

Unlike the majority of the units on our list, this one makes the bunk beds the focal point of the living space. Measuring 42 inches wide by 74 inches long, they’re located to the right-hand side of the entrance, with additional storage space available underneath. As for Mom and Dad, they’ll have to convert the rear dinette into a bed whenever they want to catch a few winks.

While we realize this configuration might be a deal-breaker for some, the R-Pod RP-172 does have its finer points. The dinette is huge and comfortable, serving as the ideal spot for viewing the TV whether it’s been converted to a bed or not. The kitchen is serviceable, with a two-burner range, sink, and compact refrigerator, but the dinette table will have to pull double duty as prep space. Alternatively, you can put a board over the sink area.

If it’s a spacious bathroom you’re after, the R-Pod is not for you. While there is a shower unit in addition to the toilet, the two are practically stacked on top of one another. For this reason, we would recommend this unit to families who prefer RV parks and campgrounds to the wilderness.

Campers who enjoy having extra counter space are sure to appreciate the Camplite CL21BHS , with its cleverly designed galley kitchen. While the appliances are minimal—just a two-burner range and rectangular sink in addition to a small refrigerator—you’ll have plenty of room to do all your dicing and chopping.

Rounding out the amenities are a queen-sized bed with a closet on either side, a U-shaped dinette, and a rear bunkhouse. Across from the bunks, which run parallel to the trailer, you’ll find the bathroom, equipped with stall shower and toilet. We especially love the outdoor shower on this rig—a feature that reminds us why we enjoy camping so much in the first place.

Note that the bunk beds measure just 28 inches wide, which doesn’t give sleepers much elbow room. Additionally, they’re located right beside the toilet, with only a thin wall in between.

Take a look at the Flagstaff Micro-Lite 23LB if you want a bunkhouse travel trailer that’s equipped with all the comforts of home—and perhaps a few extra. Along with the interior amenities, this unit includes an outdoor gas grill and 15-foot awning, the perfect setup for evening picnics.

When you enter the trailer, you’ll be greeted by the master bedroom, complete with queen-sized bed and twin wardrobes, as well as additional overhead storage. An entertainment center and radio are situated above the dinette. A refrigerator sits nearby, allowing you easy access to your favorite beverages while you watch TV.

Across from this setup, you have the kitchen, which is generously outfitted with a double sink, three-burner range, and microwave. The bunkhouse includes its own wardrobe, along with the two narrow beds. Although the bathroom space is fairly small, there’s enough room for a tub/shower combo, a toilet, and a vanity with a built-in sink. While it’s slightly heavier than most of the units on our list, we think the Micro-Lite 23LB is an excellent upscale offering.

The Sonic Lite Sl169VBH includes a Murphy bed rather than a regular master bedroom, which helps to open up the floor space during daylight hours. As a result, this unit sleeps a maximum of just four people. When the bed is folded into the wall, a free-standing table and two chairs take its place, with the closets on either side standing at the ready.

To the rear, a bunkhouse offers sleeping space that’s ideal for two teenagers, with the beds measuring just under 88 inches in length. The bathroom is conveniently located just outside and outfitted with a toilet, sink, and tub/shower combination. Additional storage space can be used as either a wardrobe for the bunkhouse or a pantry for kitchen staples.

The kitchen is sprawling but sufficient, including a sink, refrigerator, and two-burner range. Outside the main entrance, relax beneath the 11-foot awning and take in the sunset before retiring for the night.

The Bottom Line

A bunkhouse travel trailer will do more than provide your family with a place to sleep. With the features that these lightweight travel trailer models have to offer, you can lay the foundation for a lifetime of unique memories—starting today.

Can an SUV Tow a Camper?

The answer to this depends completely on your SUV and the camper. Sometimes the answer is a flat no.

But, most larger SUVs can handle a lightweight, fully enclosed travel trailer up to about 5,000 lbs GVWR. 

You always need to check and make sure your vehicle and camper are compatible. So don’t forget that and, while you’re at it, just don’t listen to anyone who tells you otherwise. K? 

Okay, let’s do this. 

Here we’ll share some of our favorite campers under 5,000 lbs. 

This is meant to give you a starting place in your hunt for the perfect, SUV towable camper. This is not supposed to be a full list of options, so don’t feel limited if you don’t see the perfect RV here. 

FYI: If you do see a layout you like here, but want a different brand, many small camper manufacturers build similar floor plans. You’ll probably be able to find a brand you prefer that builds your layout.

Wolf Den: Lightweight, Budget Friendly Travel Trailers

Most of Cherokee’s Wolf Pup single axle campers are over 5k lbs. The new Wolf Den EV series changes this with floor plans that are their lightest, most budget friendly options of all. 

In fact, Wolf Den is built for affordability. 

Cherokee didn’t want to take existing models and cut out features to leave an RV that feels unfinished.

You don’t need to go off road, you don’t need a tiny house? Try the essentials only line. 

Plus it’s lighter and costs thousands less than the regular IBEX.

Single axle campers with a front bed and rear bath normally have the door positioned so you walk in right on top of the mattress. 

This one does it different.

Looking for a little pizzaz in your lightweight camper? Keep the excellent Jayco warranty, and try Jay Feather Micro. 

The 166FBS , 171BH , and 173MRB are under 5,000 pounds. 

Jay Feather Micros are arguably some of the swankier, more highly equipped small campers. 

Some will push close to that 5,000 lb. boundary. 

The 166FBS is the 1st of the Feather Micro series and, according to Josh the RV Nerd, still the best of them all. 

The Quality, Lightweight Jay Feather Micro 166FBS
