How to Get the National Parks Senior Pass (Benefits, List of Parks) [2023]

If you think you’ll be visiting national parks for years to come and you’re age 62 or older, I highly suggest that you look into getting the National Parks Senior Pass.

But how exactly do you get this pass and how much does it cost to purchase? 

I’ll explain everything you need to know about this pass and show you how to order your senior pass today. 

I’ll also talk about the senior pass benefits that could save you a lot of money and get you into a long list of park locations.

What is the National Parks Senior Pass?

The National Parks Senior Pass is version of the “American the Beautiful Pass” created specifically for senior citizens in order to allow them access to the national parks at a discounted rate.

It offers a discounted membership rate that can be purchased on a lifetime basis for on an annual basis for a lower cost. That means that when you visit parks like Yellowstone National Park , you’ll be able to save money or eventually get in for free!

What is the American the Beautiful Pass?

The National Park Service offers a pass known as the “American the Beautiful Pass.” This is an annual pass that gives you access to more than 2,000 federal recreation sites.

The pass covers entrance, standard amenity fees and day use fees for a driver and all passengers in a personal vehicle at per vehicle fee areas (or up to four adults at sites that charge per person).

Each pass will cover the entrance fees and standard amenity fees at:

• National parks
• National wildlife refuges
• National forests and grasslands
• Lands managed by the Bureau of Land Management
• Lands managed by the Bureau of Reclamation
• Lands managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

The cost for this annual pass is $80 but there are several different versions. You can find out much more about the annual pass here .

What are the National Parks Senior Pass benefits?

The Senior Passes admit pass owner/s and passengers in a noncommercial vehicle at per-vehicle fee areas and pass owners plus three adults , not to exceed four adults, where per-person fees are charged. (Children under 16 are always admitted free.)

So if the entrance fee is based on the vehicle everybody inside gets in free but if the entrance fee is based on a per person basis, only a total of four adults will get in free.

Also, at many sites, the Senior Passes provide the pass owner (only) a discount (up to 50%) on things like camping, swimming, boat launching, and guided tours.

In general  discounts are honored as follows:

Individual Campsites

• The discount only applies to the fee for the campsite physically occupied by the pass owner, not to any additional campsite(s) occupied by members of the pass owner’s party.

Campsites with Utility Hookups

• If utility fees are charged separately, there is no discount. The discount may apply if the utility fee is combined (seamless) with the campsite fee.

Group Campsites and Facilities:

• (including, but not limited to, group facilities, picnic areas or pavilions): There is no discount for group campsites and other group facilities that charge a flat fee. If the group campsite has a per person fee rate, only the pass owner receives a discount; others using the site pay the full fee.

Guided Tours:

• The pass offers discounts on some guided tours. Only the pass owner receives a discount if one is offered.

The pass generally does NOT cover or reduce special recreation permit fees or fees charged by concessioners. Also, the Senior Pass  does not  cover discounts in on-site bookstores or gift stores.

Senior pass for state parks?

Note that the National Parks Senior Pass does not provide you with access to state parks.

Admission to those parks is controlled by your local state. Many states do provide discounted entry rates to senior citizens but the age requirements and terms of the discount could differ.

How do you qualify for the National Parks Senior Pass?

The National Parks Senior Pass is available for: U.S. citizens or permanent residents age 62 or over. 

Keep in mind that applicants must provide documentation of age and residency or citizenship.

Documentation that may be required includes:

• A U.S. State or Territory issued Driver’s License
• Identification or Birth Certificate
• A U.S. Passport or Passport Card
• A Permanent Resident Card (Green Card)

How much does the National Parks Senior Pass cost?

There are actually two different versions of the National Parks Senior Pass.

1) Lifetime Senior Pass

The Lifetime Senior Pass will provide you with free entry into all of the above mentioned National Park sites for the remainder of your life.

The cost of the Lifetime Senior Pass is $80. 

2) Annual Senior Pass

The Annual Senior Pass will provide you with free entry into all of the above mentioned National Park sites but only for one year.

The cost of the Annual Senior Pass is $20.

A typical admission fee to a national park can range from free to $30 plus.

For that reason, I would recommend purchasing the lifetime pass because you will probably end up getting better value out of that, even if you only plan on visiting one national park per year for the next decade.

Where can I buy a National Parks Senior Pass (purchase locations)?

There are a few different ways that you can purchase a National Parks Senior Pass.

You can purchase a National Parks Senior Pass in person at federal recreation sites.  Click here for a list of federal recreation sites that issue passes .

You can purchase the Lifetime Senior Pass or the Annual Senior Pass online through the USGS store.

If you’re a bit old fashioned, you can purchase the pass through the mail. You’ll need to use the specific application form which you can find right here .

If you mail in your application, you’ll need to provide a photocopy of proof of age and citizenship or residency and pay the processing fee. You will mail it off to: 

• Attn: Senior Pass
• Box 25286 
• Denver, CO 80225

There is an additional cost of $10 for passes purchased online or by mail.  So the effective cost of the annual pass is $30 and the lifetime pass is $90 if you purchase it online or via mail.

Can I replace my National Parks Senior Pass?

If you lose your National Parks Senior Pass or it gets stolen there is no way for you to purchase another pass.

However, if the pass is damaged, it can be replaced as long as a portion of the pass is identifiable and you show proper identification.

The replacement will be subject to a $10 replacement processing fee.

Can I transfer my National Parks Senior Pass?

The National Parks Senior Pass is not transferrable so you are not allowed to give your pass to another individual.

Is there a National Parks Pass for veterans?

Unfortunately, there is not currently a special national parks pass for veterans.

However, there is a special pass for current US military members and their dependents in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, and Coast Guard, as well as most members of the US Reserves and National Guard.

In order to obtain that pass, proper military ID is required (CAC Card or DoD Form 1173). You can read more about the national parks pas for military members here .

What is the Golden Age Passport for national parks?

The Golden Age Passport was a pass for national parks issued by the National Parks Service until January 1, 2007. This is no longer available and the Senior Pass has completely replaced this.

However, these passes will continue to be honored according to the provisions of the pass.

What is the access pass?

You should note that there is also a special pass to United States citizens or permanent residents, regardless of age , that have a permanent disability. This is called the access pass and will allow you to have free entry into the parks.

There is no cost for this pass but you will need to provide documentation that you have a permanent disability, which could include:

• A statement signed by a licensed physician attesting that you have a permanent physical, mental, or sensory impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities, and stating the nature of the impairment; OR
• A document issued by a Federal agency, such as the U.S. Department of Veterans Administration, which attests that you have been medically determined to be eligible to receive Federal benefits as a result of blindness or permanent disability. Other acceptable Federal agency documents include proof of receipt of Social Security Disability Income (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI); OR
• A document issued by a State agency such as a vocational rehabilitation agency, which attests that you have been medically determined to be eligible to receive vocational rehabilitation agency benefits or services as a result of medically determined blindness or permanent disability. Showing a State motor vehicle department disability sticker, license plate or hang tag is not acceptable documentation.

Why did the National Parks Senior Pass go up in price?

On  August 28, 2017 , the price of the America the Beautiful – The National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Senior Pass increased for the first time since 1994 due to  Centennial Legislation P.L. 114-289  passed by the US Congress on   December 16, 2016.

The prior cost was only $10 so the increase to $80 was a major price increase.

The price increase was meant to bring in additional revenue that “will be used to enhance the visitor experience in parks.” This price increase comes around the same time that we’re seeing price increases at many national park sites.

The reason being that the National Park Service needs more funds to support their much-needed infrastructure improvements, which have been needed with the rise of visitors of recent years.

How do I show my pass?

At Federal recreation sites with entrance stations, you’ll simply show your card to the park ranger working the entrance stations.

But if you’re arriving to a site with no entrance station or there’s no staff member there to verify your pass, you’ll need to display your pass or show proof of pass ownership to compliance officers via one of the two following methods:

• HANGTAGS —  A valid national parks pass can either be displayed on your rearview mirror using a free hangtag or on your dashboard with the signature side showing.
• DECALS —  If you own an open-topped vehicle (jeep, motorcycle, etc.) you can obtain a free decal to display on your vehicle to serve as proof of payment

Final word on the National Parks Senior Pass

It’s good to remember that access to the majority of National Park Service sites remains free—only  118 of 417 National Park Service sites have an entrance fee.

So in many instances fees are not an issue.

However, if you think you’ll be visiting some of the popular sites like Yellowstone National Park or Yosemite National Park, then I think it’s a good idea to look into the lifetime pass since you’ll end up saving money in the long-run.

How do I get a replacement card for a lost Senior Lifetime Pass?

The NPS is still operating in the 19th century, not even the 20th. There is no name printed on my senior pass, so anyone could steal it and use it or sell it. For that reason I won’t use the hangtag to display the pass in my car if I’m out hiking or camping. There’s a number printed somewhere on the pass, but they don’t keep records of who bought it? Ridiculous. They’ve designed the senior pass so that it’s essentially like cash, untraceable and usable by whoever gets ahold of it.

I believe we paid to get in to Mt Rushmore last year, but Mt. Rushmore is not listed under South Dakota. Is this pass valid to use at that National Park?

There are two great options for seniors to choose from when considering National Parks passes: Annual and Lifetime. The Annual option, at $20, is good for one year of visitation. On the other hand, the Lifetime pass, at $80, offers a great value for seniors who plan to visit often.

Senior passes are available to all U.S. citizens or permanent residents of at least 62 years of age. To purchase your pass, you must be able to provide proof of age and residency. In most cases, a standard driver’s license or passport will suffice.

How to Purchase a National Parks Pass for Seniors

There are many ways to purchase a National Parks Pass for Seniors. You can very easily purchase a pass at your nearest federal recreation site. Additionally, you can also secure an annual pass or lifetime pass online, or via mail by using the mail-in form on the USGS store website. Though online purchases come with an additional fee of $5, I personally recommend this method for the sake of efficiency.

You can easily purchase your pass online using your smartphone. Passes are shipped from USGS within 5 days. You can select standard shipping (7-21 days), ground shipping (5-7 days) 2nd-day shipping, or overnight shipping, depending on how quickly you’d like to have your pass. Shipping costs are charged as a separate transaction—ranging from $5-$15 depending on speed and shipping address. The online USGS store accepts Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Discover.

Expert Advice: National Parks Senior Passes are non-refundable, non-transferable, and non-replaceable . When you receive your pass, be sure to keep it in an accessible yet secure location to avoid any potential issues.

What’s Included in the National Parks Senior Pass

Both the Annual and Lifetime Senior Pass allow access to over 2,000 national parks, national monuments, national wildlife refuges, and national forests and grasslands. Many of these sites will include their own visitor centers, where you can spend an afternoon browsing interesting artifacts and educational materials.

FYI: Most national parks contain visitor centers where, in addition to brochures and exhibits, you can find naturalists and park rangers who can help you plan your drive or excursion through nature.

Additionally, both passes include the added bonus of a 50 percent discount on some amenity fees, such as camping or guided tours. At Yosemite National Park, for example, senior pass holders may reserve a campsite for as low as $15 dollars (as opposed to $30 for those without a pass).

Bird Watching in Mesa Verde

At Mesa Verde National Park in Colorado, you can take a gander at warblers and hummingbirds as they migrate through the region, feasting on the nectar of Indian paintbrush plants.

Sand Sledding and Sandboarding at Great Sand Dunes

Perhaps you’ve ridden on a sled down a snow-covered mountain. Imagine doing the same down a giant sand dune! You can purchase or rent sleds engineered to ride the dunes at retailers just outside of Great Sand Dunes National Park.

Observing the Supervolcano at Yellowstone

A supervolcano is a volcano with the potential for particularly large eruptions. Yellowstone National Parks’ supervolcano is active—but don’t worry— it’s under continuous monitoring by park scientists.

With over 2,000 sites to visit using your pass, it may be difficult to decide where to go first. While the parks will naturally vary based on your region, here are some of my favorites for seniors.

Acadia National Park, Maine

Located on the pristine rocky Maine coast, Acadia National Park is one of the most visited federal recreation sites. Acadia boasts activities for all interests and activity levels. You can experience gorgeous overlooks, historic carriage roads, puffin cruises, and the Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse.

Grand Canyon National Park, Arizona

One of the most iconic parks in all of America, Grand Canyon National Park provides 1,900 square miles of adventure. Aside from the canyon itself, the endless attractions at this national park include the Grand Canyon Village, Havasu Falls, and the Skywalk—a glass bridge spanning 70 feet with an underfoot view into the depths of the canyon.

Rocky Mountain National Park, Colorado

While admiring the Rockies on the horizon, you can gander at wild elk, spend time by the idyllic Bear Lake, or spend the afternoon at the Moraine Park Museum and Amphitheater enjoying hands-on activities and exhibits on everything from log cabins to glaciers!

Gettysburg National Military Park in Pennsylvania

If you’re a history buff, you’ll love the Gettysburg National Military Park. Revered as the setting for Abraham Lincoln’s infamous speech, this national park has live historical reenactments, educational guided tours, and horseback riding trails.

Castillo de San Marcos National Monument, Florida

Nestled in St. Augustine, considered to be the oldest city in the U.S., Castillo de San Marcos is home to a 17th-century Spanish fort with connections to the American Revolution. Frequently Asked Questions About the National Parks Pass for Seniors

The National Parks Senior Pass covers admission for the pass owner and any accompanying passengers. Additional vehicles will not be admitted under the same pass.

Passes can have up to two owners. Feel sign-up for your pass with a spouse, friend, or colleague (as long as they have senior status).

For those medically determined to be living with a permanent disability, the America the Beautiful Access Pass offers free access to all federal recreation sites. This pass holds the same benefits as the senior park passes, but is free of charge and has no expiration date.

Since state parks are operated via state rather than federal administration, they are often not included under the umbrella of federal recreation sites. Most state parks will issue their own iterations of park passes for seniors. Contact your local state park for more information.

National Park entrance fees are waived for all visitors for 5 days out of the year: January 20th (Martin Luther King Jr. Day), April 18th (beginning of National Park Week), August 5th (celebration of Great American Outdoors Act), August 25th (National Park System birthday), September 26th (National Public Lands Day), and November 11th (Veterans Day).

• In some cases where use fees are charged, only the person named on the Senior Pass will be given the 50 percent discount.
• The senior pass is non-transferable and does not cover or reduce special recreation permit fees or concession fees charged by private companies.

How to Buy a National Parks Lifetime Senior Pass

The Senior Pass to national parks can be purchased online on the U.S. Geological Survey website  or through the Your Pass Now site.

Other Park Passes from the National Park Service

• Access Pass: A Free Pass for People with Disabilities The Access Pass is a special permit for people of any age who are medically determined to be blind or have other permanent disabilities. It offers the same benefits as the Senior Pass, but it is completely free. No processing fee is charged for the Access Pass. To qualify for the free Access Pass to national parks, you will need to provide one of the following: a statement from a licensed physician, a document issued by a Federal agency such as the Veteran's Administration, proof of Social Security Disability Income or Supplemental Security Income, or a document issued by a state agency such as a vocational rehabilitation agency.
• In person at a national park that charges an entrance fee
• Online from the National Park Service Annual Pass site
• By calling 1-888-ASK-USGS, Ext. 1
• Free Pass to National Parks for Volunteers If you enjoy the national parks and want to help out, become a volunteer and get an annual pass for free. You'll receive the same discounts and national park benefits as the Annual Pass described above, but the Volunteer Pass is free to volunteers who provide 500 hours of cumulative service.

What Is The America The Beautiful National Parks Pass?

America the Beautiful National Park passes cover admission to national parks and wildlife refuges coast to coast and are available to folks in a variety of demographics for different prices. The Senior Pass is for people 62 and older and is distinct from the general Annual Pass option.

There are two types of Senior Pass available: annual and lifetime. They cover entrance and access to over 2,000 national lands sites including all national parks and national park recreation areas across the U.S. Your pass covers entry for you and up to three additional adults who are with you in your vehicle. Children under 16 are always given free admission. Your pass also entitles you to discounts on camping and tours at many locations.

Cost Of The Pass

The Senior Annual Pass is $20 and the Senior Lifetime Pass is $80. Both entail an additional $10 service fee.

The pass is a great value. There are 118 National Parks Service-managed sites, including 112 national parks that have entrance fees. Without a pass, entry fees to these sites vary from $10 to $30 per person depending on the park. When you add in half-price camping fees (available only for Senior and Access Pass holders), the pass will easily pay for itself.

Does My Pass Expire?

Where Do I Get A Pass?

You can purchase your pass online through the USGS store . The USGS manages all pass purchases and information. You also can print out the online application and mail it with your $30 or $90 fee depending on what pass you choose. All passes are sent to recipients by return mail. The Buffalo National Grasslands in South Dakota is a great day site where you will experience buffalo herds as they lazily cross the park road with their calves in tow. They may come right up to your car, and rangers will be present to keep you safe.

From amateurs using their smartphone cameras to photographers with sophisticated long-range lenses, visitors line up to capture photos of these magnificent animals. You’ll find interpretive markers with historical information in convenient pull-off areas where you can park your car and get out to stretch. Don’t miss the burros that roam the park. One might even stick its head in your car window seeking a treat.

Zion National Park

Your breath will be taken away when you see the red rock mountainsides and canyons of Zion National Park in southwest Utah. Board a free tram at the visitor center and ride through the park, taking in its beauty. Get off and on at any of the tram’s nine stops, where you’ll find easy walking paths as well as strenuous climbing opportunities.

From the last stop, you can walk one mile down a paved path along the Virgin River, eventually finding yourself at the canyon entrance to The Narrows. Here you can sit on smooth rocks on the river bank and watch the adventurous don waterproof shoes and waders to step into the shallows, trekking several miles out and back through water between the canyon walls.

Plan A Day Trip Or Long Weekend

Get out to a park and enjoy a picnic. Most parks allow dogs on a leash (but not in bookstores or ranger buildings). Visit the welcome center to learn more about your park. Have lunch or dinner in one of the park restaurants, which are known for serving locally sourced meals.

Traveling to a national park can be a wonderful experience. Camping in a tent or an RV is a lot of fun, but you can stay at a lodge, cabin, or hotel in many national parks. Reservations for campgrounds and lodging places are a must, especially at the popular parks and during summer or ski season. Consider getting off the beaten path to an Army Corp of Engineers campsite on lake or riverfront for boating and fishing, or a Fish and Wildlife refuge for birding .

Benefits and Entitlements

If you're 60 or over or you have a disability, you might be eligible for public transport concessions – from discounts on your rail journeys to a free bus pass.

What transport concessions are available?

There are several national public transport concessions available to older and disabled people. Some entitle you to discounts on your fares, while others allow you to travel for free.

Eligibility for these concessions depends on whether you have a disability or your age. 

Depending on your age and your circumstances, you might be able to get one of the following free bus passes, which allow you to travel free on local buses:

• an older person's bus pass
• a disabled person's bus pass

What age do I have to be to get an older person's bus pass?

You can get an older person's bus pass when you reach State Pension age, which is currently 66 for both women and men.

If you're 60 or over and live in London, then you can get free travel on buses, trains and other modes of transport in and around London with a 60+ London Oyster photocard.

How can I get a disabled person's bus pass?

There's no central provider of the disabled person's bus pass – to find out if you're eligible and how to apply, you need to get in touch with your local council.

Are there any other discounts if I'm an older person or I'm disabled?

It's a good idea to contact individual transport operators to see if they offer discounts.

For instance, National Express offers Coachcards. These are discount cards for older or disabled customers. You buy them for a set fee of £15.00 and they get you a third off the cost of your travel across the year.

Depending on your age and circumstances, you might be entitled to one of the below railcards:

• a Senior Railcard
• a Disabled Person's Railcard

Both railcards are discount cards. You buy them for a set fee to last either 1 or 3 years and they get you a third off the cost of your train travel.

Can I get a Senior Railcard?

The Senior Railcard is available for anyone aged 60 or over to buy.

You can apply on the Senior Railcard website using a valid passport or UK driving licence as ID. Or, you can apply in person at most staffed railway stations.

Can I get a Disabled Person's Railcard?

The Disabled Person's Railcard is available to you if you meet one of the following criteria:

• you're registered as deaf or use a hearing aid
• you're registered as having a visual impairment
• you have epilepsy
• you receive a disability-related benefit, such as  Personal Independence Payment
• you receive War or Service Disablement pension
• you receive Attendance Allowance
• you receive Severe Disablement Allowance
• you receive War Pensioner's mobility supplement

Freedom Passes give London residents free travel in the city – including National Rail services, the Underground, buses, river services and trams – and free local bus journeys nationally.

If you live in London, you can apply for a Freedom Pass if one of the following applies to you:

• you've reached State Pension age
• you have a disability.

National Rail has an interactive tool called Stations Made Easy, designed to help people find their way around stations and find more accessible routes, avoiding potential difficulties like stairs. This may be helpful if you have difficulty using public transport because of your health.

If you're disabled, you can't use public transport, or you don't have access to a car, you might also be able to use a community transport scheme – such as a social car, dial-a-ride, or taxicard scheme.

Shopmobility schemes help people shop in town centres by lending out wheelchairs and scooters. Some local councils also offer concessions on local public transport.

If you’re hoping to cross some of the country’s best parks off your travel bucket list or your retirement bucket list , now is your chance. The cost of visiting multiple National Parks adds up quickly, so a pass saves you big on some of the best sights in the world. In this guide, we’ll explain how and where to get a National Park senior pass this year.

All of the passes under the National Parks system are known as America the Beautiful passes . The pass is your ticket to all of the National Parks, as well as more than 2,000 federal recreation sites. There are different passes available for members of the military, students, volunteers, and regular citizens. 

The senior pass falls under this umbrella. Like most senior discount policies , you have to be a certain age in order to qualify—in this case, 62 years or older. You also must be either a U.S. citizen or a permanent resident. You’ll need to provide documentation providing your age and residency as part of the application process. 

There are a lot of unexpected benefits to your senior pass membership. Not only do you gain free entry into all of the National Parks and federal recreation areas, but there are added benefits as well. 

• You and three other passengers in a vehicle with you are free 
• Camping, swimming, boat launch, and guided tour fees discounted in some locations
• Covers all entrance and standard (day-use) amenity fees
• Discounts on some recreational activities or programs

There are two different types of senior pass membership. One is a lifetime membership and the other is an annual membership. The costs for each are:

• $80 for a lifetime senior pass
• $20 for an annual senior pass

The lifetime membership can be used for the remainder of your life with no renewal necessary. It also is not affected by any price changes that might occur, unlike the yearly pass. While the price doesn’t change often, it recently jumped to $80 for a lifetime membership in 2023. To protect against these changes, purchasing a lifetime pass is a better investment for most seniors. 

In addition to the cost above, there is a $10 cost for any passes purchased online or by mail. The only way to avoid this fee is to purchase your National Park pass in person at a National Park location. 

If you’re ready to get a senior pass for yourself, it’s not always clear how to start this process. This is especially true if you don’t live near a National Park yourself. Follow the steps below to secure your own senior pass. 

Step 1. Decide between a yearly and lifetime pass

Your first step is to determine if you need a yearly pass or a lifetime pass. There are benefits to both. Of course, the annual pass is less expensive. That makes it a good fit if you’re not sure how much you’ll use the pass. If you only plan to visit a handful of National Parks or if you have under a year's worth of travel plans, save your money by choosing an annual pass. 

On the other hand, if you have a lot of plans to see a variety of National Parks across the country, consider a lifetime membership. Remember, an America the Beautiful pass includes more than just National Parks. 

Over 2,000 recreation areas are included, so you might discover you get a lot of use out of this pass, even in your own town. Ultimately, the lifetime pass is a great long-term option where you don’t have to worry about price changes in the future. 

Step 2. Visit in person to purchase (easiest method)

The easiest (and least expensive) way to purchase your senior pass is to visit a location in person. If you live near a federal recreation site, you can visit and ask for an application. This is something they usually process on the spot, so you could go home with your National Park pass that day. 

To check to see if there’s a location near you, review the full list of federal recreation sites that have the ability to issue passes. Not every site issues passes, so check before you leave home. Make sure you bring your ID so you can easily process your application. 

Step 3. Or complete your application online or by mail

If you don’t have a location near you to purchase, you can also get your pass online or through the mail. As noted previously, this includes a $10 additional fee on top of the cost of the pass. 

You can purchase the  lifetime pass  or annual pass online through the USGS online store. When you purchase your pass online, it will not be downloadable or printable. The Park Service reviews your application and mails your pass to you. When purchasing the past digitally, you’ll upload your ID documents for proof of age and residency. 

If you’d rather purchase your pass online, you can use this application form found online. This is similar to the application used for in-person registration. You’ll need to mail your form with a photocopy of your ID. Acceptable IDs include a U.S. state driver’s license, your birth certificate, passport, or green card. Similar to the online application, the park service mails your pass to you. 

Step 4. Receive your pass

As soon as you get your pass in person or in the mail, it’s time to start putting it to use. Find some travel inspiration in retirement magazines , travel sites, and just by checking out your local parks. There’s so much to see, so now’s your chance to explore more of this wide and wonderful country. 

Without the daily responsibility of a full-time job, many seniors find a new passion for exploration in their golden years. A National Park senior pass is the perfect way to complement this drive to see more. 

Because most people don’t have any experience with National Park passes prior to the senior pass, it’s normal to have a few questions about what to expect. Here are some of the most common questions about a senior pass, as well as everything you need to know. 

Where can you use your senior pass?

Your senior pass works at a number of locations, not just the National Park Service. They work in any federal recreation area. 

Note that this does not usually include state recreation areas. State parks and state locations typically have their own passes available if this is something you plan to use often. 

What happens if you lose or misplace your senior pass?

Unfortunately, if you lose or misplace your senior pass, it’s not replaceable. You’ll need to purchase a new pass if you no longer have your annual or lifetime pass. Store your records and pass them in a safe place with your other travel documents. 

How long is the senior pass good for?

If you purchase an annual senior pass, it’s valid for a period of 12 months after your pass is approved. You’ll need to renew your annual pass each year if you wish to continue using your National Park pass. 

The lifetime senior pass is good for your entire lifetime. The cost will never change, and you won’t need to pay any additional fees to keep your pass active. If the price changes in the future, you will not need to pay anything else. 

How is the money from these passes used?

The money from all senior passes goes towards the National Park Foundation Endowment and the National Park Centennial Challenge Fund. These foundations are the official partners of the National Park Foundation. They serve to further the mission and purpose of National Parks. 

Your money goes towards things like educational programs, park maintenance, and other important conservation initiatives. A National Park pass isn’t just useful for your own travels and adventures, but it also does some good for the world.

With national parks all over the country, you might be interested in a senior park pass. How do you get such a pass and how much does it cost?

A National Park Pass (called the American The Beautiful pass) can be purchased through the National Park Service. As of 2023, the price of the American The Beautiful pass is $80 for a Lifetime Pass or $20 for an Annual Pass for the elderly on a tight budget, and provides free admission to more than 2,000 federal parks and recreation sites nationwide.

How Can I Get A Senior Pass To National Parks?

The NPS’s Senior Pass is available to permanent residents and U.S. citizens 62 years old and older. You have two options for obtaining the pass, either purchasing it online or in person.

Buying A Senior Pass Online

The NPS will redirect you to the USGS online store to purchase your senior passes. Click here to the link for the Annual Pass and here to the link for the Lifetime Pass.

The USGS website accepts Visa, Discover, Mastercard, and American Express payment options. You’ll go through a secure checkout process and receive a confirmation email after you complete your order.

Buying A Senior Pass In Person

If you’d rather not shop online, you can always find an NPS park throughout the US by using this official resource . You can narrow your search by the type of pass you’re interested in, your state, or by a federal agency.

Whether you purchase a senior pass to a national park online or in person, you must verify your US citizenship or green card and provide documentation of age.

How Much Is The National Park Pass For Seniors?

The National Park Pass was $10 for many years. However, in 2017, the NPS increased the price for the first time since 1994. It wasn’t a small price jump either, but a rise of $70.

As of this writing, the Lifetime Senior Pass now costs $80. You won’t have to pay that fee again, but the cost is a little steep if you were still expecting the pass to only cost $10.

You can also pay by the year if that’s more affordable for you.

The Annual Senior Pass costs only $20, but you have to renew it each year you’re interested in continuing to visit NPS parks with a pass.

Who is covered by the pass?

Each pass covers entrance fees at lands managed by the National Park Service and US Fish & Wildlife Service and also standard amenity fees (day use fees) at lands managed by the US Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, Bureau of Reclamation, and US Army Corps of Engineers. A pass covers the pass owner and all occupants in a personal vehicle at sites that charge per vehicle or, the pass owner and up to three additional adults (16 and over) at sites that charge per person. What Is The Difference Between America The Beautiful Pass And A Senior Pass?

The Senior Pass now has a super-long name. It’s officially called the “America the Beautiful – The National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Senior Pass,” in full.

It has replaced the Golden Age Passports (*which are still valid for a lifetime, but the pass holder can now exchange this one for the America The Beautiful pass (for no additional fee) by showing proper identification, such as a driver’s license or birth certificate).

America the Beautiful National Parks & Federal Recreational Lands Passes as a whole are for park visitors of all ages.

There are a variety of passes available.

For example, fourth-grade students can receive a version of the pass to begin learning about the importance of our national parks from a young age.

Other varieties of the America the Beautiful National Parks & Federal Recreational Land Passes include:

• Access Pass for the handicapped
• Annual Senior Pass for the elderly
• Lifetime Senior Pass for the elderly ( go here to get these interagency passes )
• Military Pass for current military members and their dependents
• Yearly Annual Pass (annual passes are “ valid for 12 months from the month of purchase , expiring the last day of that month “, per the official USGS Store .)

The difference is the age limit. Other America the Beautiful Passes have differing criteria for membership whereas a Senior Pass requires an adult to be over the age of 62. Proof of age is required.

What Are The Benefits Of A Lifetime National Park Pass?

Are you strongly considering a Lifetime Senior Pass to NPS parks, but you’re still on the fence?

Check out this list of benefits, as it just could convince you, if the ability to enjoy the beauty of our national parks hasn’t done so already.

One-Time Fee

As we discussed earlier, if you purchase only the Annual Senior Pass, you’ll pay $20 year after year. Let’s say you renew that annual pass five times over. That’s already $100 for five years!

If you purchase the Lifetime Senior Pass instead, you only pay the $80 fee once. In five years, you’ll still have only paid $80.

In 10 years, that wouldn’t change, whereas after 10 years of an Annual Senior Pass, you’d have shelled out $200 by then.

The initial fee of the Annual Lifetime Pass may be $60 higher, but the value of the pass pays for itself in only a few years compared to purchasing the Annual Senior Pass.

Access To Over 2,000 Parks

As a bonafide cardholder of an NPS pass, you now have access to well over 2,000 federal recreation sites and parks throughout the country.

You can start with the parks in your state, then move to adjoining states or travel the country, road-tripping and exploring new parks along the way.

It doesn’t matter where in the US you roam. If it’s a federal park managed by the NPS, you don’t have to pay to get in.

That’s a tremendous feeling, especially for seniors who may be budgeting for retirement or are living a lower-cost retirement lifestyle.

Discounts To Amenities And Activities

Carrying a Senior Pass grants you transportation in a private or single non-commercial vehicle. Further, you may receive discounted amenities and activities when you visit a park.

You can often also save money on guided tours, boating, swimming, and camping.

Spend More Time In Nature

Do you know how much time the average person spends indoors over their lifetime? Up to 90 percent of their time, reports Fast Company .

The Environmental Protection Agency suggests that it could be as much as 93 percent of our lives. We spend six percent of our lives in our vehicles and then another 87 percent in our homes and offices.

If you’ve recently retired, you can finally buck that trend. You don’t have a boss breathing down your neck, so you’re free to go outside any day you wish.

Spending time outdoors helps seniors in a variety of ways. A study entitled The Benefits of Nearby Nature in Cities for Older Adults found these benefits:

• Spending time outdoors once weekly at least might help a senior maintain their physical functions like dressing and bathing. A cited study involving more than 1,800 participants 65 and older found that seniors had a harder time with these tasks the less they went outside.
• Time outdoors can reduce your cortisol levels, helping you keep stress at bay. The report cited a study involving South Korean cognitive behavioral therapy patients with hypertension. The participants spent three days in a forest and meditated and walked. They had less cortisol compared to a group of program participants that didn’t visit the forest.
• Being outside in green space can improve mental restoration, especially the more time you spend outside.

Seniors can engage in more social interactions with fellow park goers or with the group they’re visiting the park with, which is another key benefit!

Keeps You Active, Which Could In Turn Keep You Young

You don’t have to participate in arduous hikes to make spending time outside a good venture for your health! Even if you simply walk around a park, you’re still doing your health a myriad of favors.

The same study I referred to in the prior section – The Benefits of Nearby Nature in Cities for Older Adults – reports in cited research a correlation between longevity and light outdoor exercise.

According to the data, senior citizens who had access to city or state parks and greenspace and used it for walking had a higher longevity rate over the study period of five years.

In another study cited in the report, when participants 70 and older went for a walk outside every day, they had less urinary incontinence, sleep issues, and musculoskeletal pain than a group of seniors who didn’t.

Exercise for seniors has so many advantages. You’ll maintain a healthier weight, putting less strain on your heart, joints, and bones.

You’ll also be able to maintain your physical abilities to take care of yourself for longer, says The Benefits of Nearby Nature in Cities for Older Adults report.

Mentally, you could be in better shape too. Another cited study in the report involving participants 60 and older found that one-third of the participants who exercised daily had a more positive outlook.

The report states that “ Those who exercise daily are much more likely than those who never exercise to say the past year of their life has been better than normal (28%) rather than worse (15%) .”

This guide has collated some of the best free things for 60-year-olds who live in the UK. So, if you’re looking to travel across the country or pick up some new bits for your home, it is worth checking this guide before you book or buy, as there might be something you can get for free.

Free travel passes for over 60s

When it comes to free things for 60-year-olds, one of the major benefits of reaching this age is being able to enjoy certain free travel methods.

Free bus pass

Free bus passes are one of the best free things when you are 60 or older that you can get in the UK.

In recent years, the rules around free bus passes for older people have changed, but currently, in England, you can claim a free older person’s bus pass when you reach the female state pension age, which is currently 66, regardless of gender. This gives you free local bus travel anywhere in England.

Residents in Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland can get an older person’s bus pass for free travel at the age of 60.

Free travel for London residents

If you live inside or outside of London, you can get the Freedom Pass , which allows you to travel for free on the bus, tram, DLR, and most rail services in the capital, as well as getting free local bus travel across England.

For people living in London in one of the 32 London Boroughs, the 60+ Oyster Card means you can ride the capital’s public transport for free.

Free travel in Scotland

Scotland offers free travel on national bus services, and in some areas, older people can enjoy free rail travel.

To access free train travel, you will need to get a National Entitlement Card, and you can apply for one on the ScotRail website .

Free rail travel in Wales

People over 60 can benefit from free bus travel in Wales with a Concessionary Travel Pass. The pass also allows for free rail travel in some areas.

Free rail travel includes routes from Wrexham to Hawarden Bridge, Shrewsbury to Swansea, or Llandudno to Blaenau Ffestiniog.

You should check the Transport for Wales website as some routes come with stipulations – such as only being able to travel for free from October to March.

Free food for over 60s 

With many older people having more free time following retirement, it is an opportunity to fill it by doing some of the things you enjoy the most. For example, socialising with friends and family over a delicious meal can be a great way to stay connected to the people around you. Even though eating out can sometimes be expensive, if you are over 60, there are many restaurants where you can get a great discount or even a free meal.

Free meals out

If you frequently wish to dine out, obtaining a Tastecard is a wise choice. While not exclusive to seniors, Tastecards are highly valuable, offering up to a 50% discount on food or 2-for-1 meals at over 6,000 restaurants in the UK. Sign up for a 90-day trial for just £1 or opt for the best value with an annual membership at £34.99. Many of the restaurants offer a 2for1 offer, meaning you can get a whole meal for free.

Independent pubs and country dining houses often feature pensioner lunches on specific days, discounted afternoon teas or a 2for1 deal. Verify these offerings by calling, checking their websites, or inquiring locally. Many places display these deals on boards outside, and there's no harm in asking the staff!

As one of the largest supermarkets in the UK, Asda extends a special offer to individuals aged over 60. Customers in this age group can purchase soup and a bread roll for just £1, and they also have the privilege of enjoying unlimited tea and coffee for free at any of Asda's 205 cafés.

Free drinks

In partnership with Caffè Nero, Waitrosehas a hot drink offer for members of its myWaitrose loyalty scheme, which is free to join. To benefit from this offer, customers need to bring their own cups to avoid a charge for a reusable one, and there is no minimum spend requirement to receive the complimentary drink.

Free services for over 60s in health and fitness

As you get older, it is important that you continue to stay fit and look after your health. In the UK, many free services are available to people over 60, ranging from free eye tests to free health checks.

Free prescriptions

If you are over 60, any medicine prescribed by a doctor is free anywhere in the UK. To get your free prescriptions, you will need to tell the chemist at the till and fill in any forms for the prescription.

You may be asked to show proof of age, so you will need to bring some form of identification.

Free eye tests

When you are 60, another free thing that you can benefit from is free eye tests. You are entitled to a free NHS-funded eye test every two years, and you should book your appointment as normal and then notify the staff that you are eligible for a free test on arrival.

The likes of Specsavers offer free eye tests for those over 60, but you can find out more information about free eye tests on the NHS website .

Free NHS dental care

Over 60s in England could be entitled to free NHS dental care, but this depends on what benefits you are receiving. You can find out more about whether you can get free dental care by reading this NHS guide .

In Wales, if you are 60 or over, you can get free dental examinations, but any subsequent treatment as a result of the complimentary examination does carry the appropriate charge. You can read more about the free dental examinations in Wales here .

Free hearing

Hearing loss affects one in six people in the UK, and it is recommended that when you reach the age of 60, you have a hearing check every two years to keep an eye on your hearing.

At Boots, if you are over 50, you can book a free hearing test and ear health check. You can visit the Boots website to book the free hearing test. Alternatively, you can explore their online hearing test if you have any worries about your hearing. Specsavers also offers everyone a free hearing test, regardless of your age, and also has a discreet online version too.

Free health checks

The NHS Health Check is a free check-up of your overall health, and it can tell you whether you're at higher risk of getting certain health problems.

If you’re aged 40 to 74 and do not have a pre-existing health condition, you should be invited to an NHS Health Check by your GP or local council every five years.

The health check will usually take around 20 to 30 minutes, and it will include:

• Measuring your height and weight
• Measuring your waist
• A blood pressure test
• A cholesterol test
• You may also get your blood sugar level tested

Free online fitness classes

It is important to stay fit and active as you age, and if you have limited mobility or are a wheelchair user, you don’t have to leave your home to try a fitness class.

In today's digital world, there are lots of free online fitness classes available for older people. Below are just a few you could try:

Free swim and gym sessions

In some areas across the UK, free swimming and gym classes are offered to people over 60.

Southwark Council , for example, offers residents free swimming and gym facilities in their leisure centres all day on Fridays and from 2 pm to closing time on Saturdays and Sundays.

Adults over 60 can also take part in Silver sessions for free throughout the week, whilst residents with a disability that meet their eligibility criteria can use the leisure centres seven days a week.

Free shopping items for over 60s 

There is no denying that everyone loves to save money where they can, and by being over 60, you can be entitled to some great discounts and even some freebies.

Discounts at the supermarket

Iceland has taken the lead as the first supermarket to introduce exclusive discounts for individuals aged over 60. Every Tuesday, customers in this age group can enjoy a 10% discount on their shopping in Iceland, with no minimum spending requirement. This discount is also applicable at The Food Warehouse branches. To avail themselves of these special discounts, customers need to present proof of age, such as a driver’s license or bus pass.

Membership benefits

B&Q, known for its extensive range of home improvement products, provides enticing deals every Wednesday. By becoming a member of the Diamond B&Q Club, customers receive emailed vouchers, gain access to exclusive offers, and enjoy a 10% discount on key cuttings, along with discounts on van rentals.

ATS Euromaster caters to the automotive needs of individuals aged over 60 through its Club 60 program. Members of this club benefit from year-round discounts on various car-related services, including MOTs, air con recharge, wheel alignment, and a 15% discount on servicing, brakes, steering and suspension, exhausts, batteries, and more.

Free items over 60s can get for the home

With the cost of living gradually getting more expensive, making sure bills are paid can become a worry, as are unexpected costs which may not have been saved for. However, there are some schemes and discounts to which those who are over 60 are entitled.

Free TV license

Various TV licence discounts and concessions are available, and your eligibility depends on your individual circumstances. If you are 75 or older and receive Pension Credit, you are entitled to a free TV licence that covers both you and anyone residing with you, regardless of their age. For those who are blind or have a severe sight impairment, a 50% discount on the licence is applicable, but the licence must be in your name if you live with others to receive the discount.

In the case of individuals residing in care homes or sheltered housing, there is the option of an Accommodation for Residential Care (ARC) licence, priced at £7.50. This licence is necessary only if you watch TV in your separate accommodation rather than in communal spaces like a residents' lounge. To determine whether your care home or sheltered housing qualifies for an ARC licence, it is recommended to consult with your warden or administrator.

Free energy payment

The Winter Fuel Payment , allocated annually and exempt from taxes, is intended for households with individuals born on or before 24 September 1957 (for the 2023-24 period). Its purpose is to assist in offsetting winter heating expenses. While this payment is typically disbursed automatically, you can complete a claim form if you believe you have not received it.

Discounted vet expenses

Veterinary expenses can become quite costly in case of unexpected issues, and even routine check-ups and vaccinations contribute to the overall cost. It is always worth checking with your nearby veterinary practice about potential discounts for individuals over 60.

Dogs Trust provides a 50% discount with their subscription , amounting to just £12.50 per year. This membership comes with several advantages, including unrestricted access to a 24-hour emergency advice service staffed by veterinary professionals, third-party public liability insurance for your dog, a complimentary Canine Care Card ensuring Dogs Trust's commitment to caring for your dog in the event of your passing, and a subscription to the Wag! Magazine, delivered three times a year.

Free payment for grandparents

If you're among the 63% of grandparents providing care for your grandchildren, you may qualify for additional tax credits amounting to £250 each year. Additionally, this benefit can be retroactively applied as far back as 2011. To meet the eligibility criteria, you must dedicate some weekly time to caring for a grandchild under the age of 12.

Free handyperson service

For individuals aged 60 or older or those with a disability, several councils offer a handyperson service. This service can cover minor works to a home, such as replacing light bulbs and other small DIY jobs.

7 of the Best National Parks for Seniors

These senior-friendly national parks in the U.S. have wheelchair access, audio tours for vision-impaired visitors, accessible trails, and more.

America’s beautiful and diverse national parks are well-loved vacation destinations. From the U.S. Virgin Islands to American Samoa to 30 U.S. states, national parks have been set aside to preserve the natural beauty of their environment. California has the most, followed by Alaska, Utah, and Colorado, so it’s not surprising that when Travel + Leisure’s readers voted for their favorite national parks in the annual World's Best Awards , the majority of the 25 were in the West. 

While the rugged, remote settings are a large part of the appeal of U.S. national parks, those same factors have made exploring them a challenge for seniors with limited mobility, sight, or hearing. However, the National Park System is focusing on not only on improving accessibility, but also publishing specifics for planning national park visits, so that individuals of all ages can enjoy these spaces.

In 2012, the National Park Service (NPS) formed its Accessibility Task Force , with the overall goal of improving access for a wider range of visitors. The plan addresses wheelchair access, in addition to restrooms, parking lots, water fountains, and other potential challenges throughout the parks. Today, each park’s website includes an accessibility page that outlines services, facilities, and activities designed to enhance enjoyment for everyone. 

Annual and lifetime senior passes are available for visitors over the age of 62, and their travel companions (up to three) can also enter the national parks at no cost. U.S. citizens and permanent residents of any age who are medically determined to have a permanent disability are eligible for free national park access passes.

Aging in Place , an organization that serves as a resource for older Americans, published an article on the most accessible national parks, based on the number of wheelchair-friendly trails and restaurants. Badlands , Grand Canyon , and Yellowstone lead their list. 

After reviewing accessibility pages on additional national park websites, we came up with our list of the best national parks for seniors.

Yosemite National Park, California

Yosemite National Park , one of the nation’s most popular destinations for waterfalls, granite cliffs, and giant sequoias, offers sign language interpreting and assistive listening devices for free for all park programs, along with FAQ videos presented in American Sign Language. Park brochures in Braille and activities for young visitors with a variety of special needs are also available. The accessibility guide includes a map of accessible parking areas, trails, picnic grounds, restrooms, campgrounds, lodging, and food service. 

Mammoth Cave National Park, Kentucky

Featuring the longest known cave system in the world , this park is also a UNESCO World Heritage site and International Biosphere Reserve. Two tours are available for individuals with limited mobility, including an elevator and access for wheelchairs, walkers, scooters, and canes. One of the tours offers a short bus ride to limit walking time. And an audio tour for vision-impaired visitors includes realistic sounds of water along with historic stories of the caves.

Acadia National Park, Maine

Maine’s rugged, rocky coast, ocean views, the highest mountain on the Atlantic, and historic lighthouses are just a few things that Acadia National Park has to offer. The free, wheelchair-friendly Island Explorer shuttle buses take visitors to popular park destinations, some of which are accessible to wheelchairs. Visitor centers and restrooms are wheelchair accessible, too, and designated parking is available. Several picnic areas and campsites are accessible, and Jordan Pond House, the park’s only restaurant, has wheelchair access and connects to the shuttle. 

Everglades National Park, Florida

More than a million acres of marshland across the southern tip of Florida offers visitors a chance to see a diverse subtropical area and endangered species like the manatee, American crocodile, and Florida panther. A UNESCO World Heritage site and International Biosphere Reserve, Everglades provides captioning on films in visitor centers as well as assistive listening devices upon request for ranger-led programs. Visitors with limited mobility will find several wheelchair-accessible trails and boat tours, plus ramps and designated parking at visitor centers. Audio recordings, tactile exhibits, and printed information are available for vision-impaired guests as well.

Blue Ridge Parkway National Parkway, Virginia and North Carolina

The most-visited national park in 1921, according to the National Park Service , the 469- mile Parkway is designated as an All-American Road. Noted for its year-round beauty, it links Shenandoah and Great Smoky Mountains national parks. The Parkway site lists specific details about accessible visitor centers, programs, campsites, and restrooms. And an additional Blue Ridge Parkway site provides information on scenic overlooks, accessible trails, visitor centers, and fishing spots. 

Great Smoky Mountains National Park, North Carolina and Tennessee

This beautiful destination has topped the list of most-visited national parks for many years, and saw more than 14 million guests in 2021. In addition to its stunning scenery, the park features historical attractions such as well-preserved log cabins, barns, cemeteries, and churches. Most of the visitor centers offer accessible parking, restrooms, exhibits, and audio-visual rooms on one level.  Road maps are provided for self-guided auto tours, and much of the park can be enjoyed from a vehicle, including many of the vintage buildings. 

Indiana Dunes National Park, Indiana

Located on the southern shore of Lake Michigan, this 15,000-acre park offers sandy beaches, wetlands, dunes, forests, rivers, and wildlife. Visitors can enjoy the park year-round, with fishing and hiking during the summer and winter sports when snow falls. The visitor center is accessible , and devices are available for hearing assistance. Several campgrounds, picnic areas, a fishing pier, and trails are also accessible. During the summer season, large-wheeled wheelchairs are available for beach access.

Senior discounts for budget travel exist across a wide spectrum of opportunities, but many aren't obvious -- they'll require some looking.

Senior Pass From the U.S. National Park Service

Let's start with a visit to a U.S. national park , already a good buy for travelers of all ages.

U.S. citizens and permanent residents age 62 and older can purchase either a lifetime Senior Pass  or an annual pass to U.S. national parks. 

There are a few things for which the pass will not pay: fees charged by park concessions are not covered; same for some recreation permits you might need in certain parks. Those with questions about Senior Pass will generally find that even when the exemptions are noted, this is still something that will pay for itself with one visit to a park that charges admission.

Rail Discounts

Rail Europe offers senior discounts for travelers age 60 and older "for certain passes and specific trains," and generally only on first-class tickets. So in some cases, you might find it cheaper to forgo the senior discount in favor of a second-class seat. Still, it pays to check into whatever senior discounts might be available for your itinerary and class preference.

Amtrak offers a 15 percent discount on their lowest fares for anyone at least age 62. If the itinerary crosses the Canadian border and involves a VIA RailCanada train, the age restriction falls to 60. Look for the senior fare option on all of VIA's ticket options.

Another Canadian rail line, Ontario Northland , routinely discounts any trip by 10 percent for those at least 60 years of age.

Airline Discounts

With corporate belt-tightening in recent years, senior discounts on airfares have declined . But airlines still offer some consideration to senior passengers, although the extent of the savings can vary quite a bit. The best advice: shop first on price, and be sure to type in your age status when making the reservation. Here are two examples of what is offered:

Southwest offers fully refundable Senior Fares for travelers at least 65 years old. Some seating limitations or other restrictions might be applied.

Air France offers discounts for those age 60 and older when flying "within metropolitan France." The tickets can be changed or refunded with no penalty.

Travel Discounts through AARP

Travel is not the top concern of most seniors. Health care and financial stability probably outrank visiting the world's best destinations.

But travel does find its way onto the list of priorities, and it shouldn't be surprising that groups formed to lobby for senior adults would also work to offer some travel discounts. The best-known example is the AARP, once known as the American Association of Retired Persons. The name change came because the organization's focus isn't limited to the concerns of retirees. In fact, membership has long been open to anyone at least 50 years old.

AARP membership can be purchased for one year, three years and for five years. Travel discounts are offered at more than 40 hotel chains and six car rental firms. Discounts on tours, cruises, roadside assistance plans, and even vacation rentals are included.

Although self-described as non-partisan, AARP is a powerful lobbying organization in Washington D.C. Undoubtedly, AARP advocates positions that some of its members would oppose. Be aware that some budget travelers decline membership offers for this reason and seek discounts elsewhere.

The organization's stands are not secret, so take a look at the AARP website and decide for yourself if membership fits with your convictions.

National Discounts

Some discounts are initiated by governments. For example, Europe offers a number of discounts for seniors.

In Great Britain , for example, seniors get reduced admission prices for Windsor Castle , Tower of London , St. Paul's Cathedral and Westminster Abbey , among others.

In Spain, a recent promotion called Golden Days Parador included a 30 percent discount on a standard double room throughout the year at the government-owned Paradores , but certain blackout dates were applied. What are Paradores ? The government defines them this way: "hotels for luxury accommodation in Castles, Palaces, Fortresses, Convents, Monasteries, and other historic buildings. There are also modern Spanish hotels, built in traditional style, in areas of outstanding beauty."

Hotel Discounts

If you want to find the senior discounts for major hotel chains , you might have to dig a little. Click "site map" on the home page and then look for senior discount or something similar such as senior rates.

Many of the chains will offer discounts in connection with membership in organizations such as AARP, but others extend the lower rates to everyone in the age category. Motel 6 will discount room rates 10 percent for guests who are at least 60 years of age.

Marriott extends a 15 percent discount to travelers age 62 or older at 3,600 locations worldwide seven days a week. As with many of these corporate hotel discounts, the Marriott offer is subject to availability. It is capped at a maximum of two rooms per stay.

Restaurant Discounts

Many parts of the United States feature regional discount cards that seniors can present at participating businesses for immediate discounts. In Ohio, for example, there is the Golden Buckeye Card , which is available to all state residents at least 60 years old. Among the 20,000 businesses that honor the card are restaurants.

National restaurant chains are also frequently discounting senior tabs. For example, the International House of Pancakes, Burger King, Wendy's, Shoney's and Chili's all offer 10 percent discounts to seniors in the 55-60 age range. Taco Bell gives free beverages to seniors at participating locations.

Obviously, the terms of these offers will vary by location, and some franchisees might not participate. But don't be embarrassed about asking if any senior discounts are in effect. If the answer is "no," what have you lost?

Car Rental Discounts

Car rentals should be searched first on the basis of price. Then look for any discounts offered based on age. Why proceed in this manner? Because at many of the major companies, the prices will vary more than the senior discount offers.

As with hotels, some companies will base their discounts on AARP membership . Most of the major companies will discount rates 20-25 percent for AARP travelers who present their valid membership cards at the time of check-in.

Some won't make any distinction beyond an age eligibility requirement.

About the older person's travel pass.

As part of the English National Concessionary Travel Scheme, Transport for West Midlands (TfWM) are able to issue the Older Person's Travel Pass to eligible residents within the West Midlands county.

The scheme gives people of state pensionable age, or eligible people with a disability in England, free travel on local buses between the hours of 09:30 - 23:00 Monday to Friday, and all day Saturday, Sunday and on Bank Holidays.

Holders of passes bearing a TfWM logo are also entitled to free travel on the Midland Metro tram and on trains operating within the Network West Midlands area.

Each pass bears the English Rose graphic and the name of the issuing authority, in this case, Transport for West Midlands (TfWM).  

Individual authorities may specify enhancements to the scheme within their own local areas. Details of any enhancements offered will be available from the local authority who issued the pass. TfWM offer cards to those people living within the West Midlands county. 

How to apply for your pass: 

For people living within the West Midlands county, which covers Birmingham, Coventry, Dudley, Solihull, Sandwell, Walsall and Wolverhampton, your pass will be issued by Transport for West Midlands (TfWM). You can download an application from the   Network West Midlands website . 

If you live outside of the West Midlands county, your Older Person's Travel Pass will be issued by the authority who administers your local concessionary travel scheme. 

Ring and ride door-to-door transport

Adult fares are applicable to all passengers aged 2+. Adults under the age of 16 are not permitted to travel alone on any European service unless accompanied by an adult aged 18 or over or they have a letter of authority from a parent or guardian.

Infants 0-1 Inclusive

Children aged under the age of 2, must be accompanied by an adult aged 18 or over. Unaccompanied children will not be carried.

Apply for a new adult passport

You need a passport to travel to most countries outside the U.S. Learn how to apply for a passport in person, check your application status, and get it changed or corrected.

Eligibility to get a passport

If you are not able to renew your U.S. passport , or if this is your first one, you will need to apply for a new passport. To be eligible, you must be either:

• A U.S. citizen by birth or naturalization or
• A qualifying U.S. non-citizen national

You must apply in person at a passport acceptance facility for a new passport. It cannot be done online or by mail.

What do you need to get a passport?

The application process for passport books and passport cards is the same. You will choose which type of passport you want when you fill out the application. Learn about the differences between passport books and passport cards.

There are 4 things you will need to apply for and get your U.S. passport.

• You can Fill out Form DS-11 online and print it, or 
• Download Form DS-11 [PDF, 5 pages, 1.9 MB] and fill it out by hand, or
• Find your local passport acceptance facility or regional agency and pick up Form DS-11.
• Do not sign Form DS-11 until you are at your appointment and the passport acceptance official tells you to do so. 
• Original proof of citizenship - Learn about what qualifies as primary citizenship evidence or what secondary evidence may qualify if you do not have primary evidence.
• An acceptable photo ID
• A photocopy of both your citizenship document and photo ID
• Passport photo
• Passport fee

Apply in person. Find your local passport acceptance facility. This facility could be a library or post office. Some facilities require appointments or have limited hours.

If you need your passport quickly

If you need to change your name or correct your new passport

After you receive your passport, if you change your name or find an error, you will need to get an updated passport to reflect the change. The process, cost, and forms you need depend on how long you have had your passport. Follow the steps from the State Department to change your name or correct your passport.

If you are outside the U.S.

Contact the U.S. embassy or consulate near you to request a passport while outside the U.S.

• Fill out our primary application forms using  our Form Filler .  
• For the best experience, use a desktop or laptop computer when filling out your form.
• Check the information you entered for your date of birth and previous passport issuance date if you did not get the form you expected to receive.  
• If you are experiencing technical issues with our Form Filler, download a PDF and complete your form by hand.
• Visit the webpage of the  U.S. embassy or consulate  if you are applying for a U.S. passport while in a foreign country. 

Reminders for Printing Your Application

• Make sure the image of the application covers the entire page.
• Use vertical, portrait format. Do not print your form horizontally. Doing so will cause delays with your application. 
• Print your form single-sided on 8.5 inch by 11 inch letter-sized paper. We do not accept double-sided forms.
• The only handwritten marks we will accept when you use the Form Filler tool are your original signature and date. 

Primary Application Forms for a U.S. Passport

1. Application For A U.S. Passport (DS-11) 

• You should complete this form if you're applying for the first time , you're applying for your child who is under age 16 , or you don't meet our requirements to renew your passport. Print the form but do not sign it until you are instructed to do so. You can also download the form if you are having issues with the form filler. 

2.  Renewal Application  (DS-82)

• You should complete this form if you meet our requirements to renew your passport . Keep in mind that children under age 16 cannot renew their passports and must apply using Form DS-11. Make sure to sign and date the form after you print it. You can also  download the form  if you are having issues with the form filler.

3. Data Corrections, Some Name Changes, and Limited-Validity Passports (DS-5504) 

• You may be eligible to use this form if you need to change or correct your passport , or you need to replace a passport that was limited to less than 10 years validity (which is the normal validity period for an adult's passport.) Make sure to sign and date the form after you print it. You can also  download the form  if you are having issues with the form filler.

Forms for Special Situations

• You should complete this form if you lost your passport or it has been stolen . To replace a lost or stolen passport, you must apply in person and submit Form DS-11 in addition to Form DS-64. 

2. Statement of Consent for Issuing a Passport to a Child (DS-3053)

• You should complete this form if one parent or guardian cannot go with the child to apply in person for the child's passport. The parent or guardian should submit this special form in addition to their child's application (DS-11). 

3.  Statement of Special Family Circumstances (DS-5525)

• You should complete this form if one parent or guardian cannot locate the other parent or guardian. The parent who is applying should submit this special form in addition to their child's application (DS-11).

4. Statement You Did Not Receive Your U.S. Passport (DS-86)

• You should submit this form only if we mailed your passport and you did not receive it within two weeks of us mailing it. Call the National Passport Information Center and the customer service representatives will walk you through this form.

Processing Times

Routine:  6-8 weeks*

Expedited: 2-3 weeks and an extra $60*

*Consider the total time it will take to get a passport when you are booking travel.  Processing times only include the time your application is at a passport agency or center.

• It may take up to 2 weeks for applications to arrive at a passport agency or center. It may take up to 2 weeks for you to receive a completed passport after we print it.
