A new frontier: historic tour of India confirmed

There's no day-night Test on the agenda, but Australia's women will play their first red-ball game in India in almost 40 years this December

The schedule for Australia's history-making multi-format tour of India has been confirmed, with all seven games to be played across two venues in Mumbai in December and January.

The tour includes Australia's first Test in India since 1984, but the game at Wankhede Stadium will not be a pink-ball day-night match as previously reported.

The Test, to be played across four days from December 21-24, will begin each day at 9.30am (3pm AEDT).

It will be followed by three ODIs, also at Wankhede, on December 28, 30 and January 2, before three T20Is at DY Patil Stadium – which is also located in Mumbai – on January 5, 7 and 9.

Australia chief selector Shawn Flegler told media in September he believed the match would be a day-night match, and the national team took a chance to train with pink balls during their recent series against West Indies.

India's women have not hosted a Test since 2014 but will play two in the space of two weeks, with a red-ball game scheduled against England from December 14-17 at DY Patil, giving the hosts just three days' rest between matches.

Australia are likely to arrive in India one week before the start of the Test and will not have a warm-up fixture, while players will begin building their loads in preparation for the game during the ongoing Weber WBBL, which runs until December 2.

It will also be the first time Australia's women have spent Christmas touring overseas since 2004.

While no Australian player has experience on wearing India wickets, they have spent ample time in Mumbai in recent years.

They played a tri-series against India and England staged entirely at Brabourne Stadium in 2018, and five T20Is across Brabourne and DY Patil last December, while the inaugural Women's Premier League was also played solely in Mumbai in March.

Australia and India have played one previous points-based, multi-format series in Queensland in 2021, where the hosts claimed the trophy 9-5.

A contest across all formats looms as a new frontier for Australia's women, who have been routinely tested by India in T20Is and one-dayers in recent years.

One player eagerly anticipating the trip is Ashleigh Gardner, whose 8-66 at Trent Bridge on the final day of the Ashes Test in June led Australia to a drought-breaking victory over England.

"It's huge, I've played a lot of cricket in India and a lot of short format cricket and it's generally pretty batter friendly and there's lots of runs scored because they're quite flat wickets and quite small and hard outfields as well," Gardner told cricket.com.au.

"It's going to be interesting what conditions are thrown up (for the Test) – everyone expects India to turn, so being a spinner that's fantastic.

"But also being a batter, that's going to be a challenge … you're going to have to make some really good decisions out there and not switch off, as hard as that is in Test match cricket, you've got to be on every single ball.

"That tour is probably going to be one of the more challenging ones, and even just the time of year - a lot of people like being home at that time of year and that adds to the challenge as well.

"It's going to be about being able to embrace that."

Meanwhile, England will play three T20Is at Wankhede Stadium on December 6, 9 and 10 leading up to their Test, while India A and England A will play three 20-over games on November 29, December 1 and December 3.

There is a strong English contingent in the WBBL and both tours are set to impact player availability during finals, with the Stars and Thunder to be the most affected should they qualify.

All three of the Stars' internationals are regulars in England's T20I squad – Alice Capsey, Maia Bouchier and Sophia Dunkley – while Perth Scorchers are likely to lose star recruit Natalie Sciver-Brunt and the Thunder both captain Heather Knight and quick Lauren Bell.

Adelaide Strikers have two English players and Dani Gibson has been part of recent England T20 squads but they could expect to keep uncapped Georgia Adams, while Renegades' opener Tammy Beaumont has not been selected in the shortest format in the past 18 months.

Heat batter Bess Heath is uncapped but could be included in either England's main or 'A' squad, while the Hurricanes and Sixers have no England contracted players on their books.

Each person can book a maximum of four tickets. The redemption centre for online ticket purchasers is at the Bilimoria Pavilion, Civil Lines, Nagpur, which opened for ticket redemptions on February 5. Online ticket-buyers will be able to redeem their tickets at this point until 5pm on February 8.

Gates will open at the stadium from 7:30am on match days, digital ticket holders will need to have their barcode ready to scan on entrance to the venue.

2nd Test match

Tickets are available to buy for the second Test of the series on the Paytm Insider website. Season passes are currently on sale for 5,500 lakh, with prices rising to 7,500 lakh for corporate season passes. Season passes allow holders to attend all five days of the match.

Schedule announced for Australia's tour of India

All five matches of the T20I series will be held in Mumbai with the first two matches to be played at the D.Y. Patil Stadium and the subsequent three at the Cricket Club of India (CCI) Stadium.

Australia could be without their regular captain Meg Lanning, who is currently on an indefinite break from cricket to focus on her mental health after their Commonwealth Games triumph. It was also the last time the two teams met where India fell short by just nine runs in a thrilling final.

The series could be crucial to both sides in the preparation for the ICC Women's T20 World Cup in South Africa which is now less than three months away. Both the teams are put up in opposite groups. India will be up against England, Ireland, Pakistan and West Indies in Group B while Australia are pitted with Bangladesh, New Zealand, South Africa and Sri Lanka in Group A.

India will be hoping to build on the momentum from the Women's Asia Cup triumph and carry it to the marquee event in South Africa in February 2023. Australia, on the other hand, are defending champions and will be looking to win the coveted trophy for the sixth time in the history of the competition.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India has shared an update on the ticket sales information for the last three T20 Internationals of the five-match series between India and world champions Australia.

Before the start of the series, it was understood by Scroll.in that all five matches of the series would have free entre for spectators. While the first two games – at the DY Patil stadium in Navi Mumbai – did have free entry, the BCCI on Tuesday put forth a slight change in plan for the last three games at the Cricket Club of India.

Harmanpreet Kaur and Co have returned to action after their Asia Cup triumph in October and the series against world champions Australia is crucial` preparation building up towards next year’s ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in South Africa.

With an update from the stadium authorities, Scroll.in had confirmed that the first two matches at the DY Patil stadium would have free entry for spectators. Whoever wanted to watch the matches in the stadium needed to carry an identification document and pick up the free tickets from the DY Patil college.

As per an official at Mumbai Cricket Association, it was understood initially that the last three matches of the series, scheduled to be played at the Brabourne Stadium (CCI) in Mumbai, would also have free entry for spectators. Scroll.in could not get an official confirmation for the same at the time of publication.

The five matches are being conducted at both these venues under the aegis of the Board of Control for Cricket in India with the MCA providing logistical support if needed.

India, Afghanistan into cricket's Twenty20 World Cup semifinals after a dramatic Super Eight finale

G ROS ISLET, St. Lucia (AP) — Afghanistan edged Bangladesh to reach the Twenty20 World Cup semifinals for the first time and followed India into the last four following a combination of results that eliminated 2021 champion Australia on Monday.

Captain Rohit Sharma bludgeoned 92 off 41 balls to lead India to a 24-run win over Australia in St. Lucia.

Afghanistan advanced when it beat Bangladesh by eight runs with seven balls remaining in a thrilling, rain-affected match at Kingstown, St. Vincent, to conclude the Super Eight stage.

At times in the match the fate of the Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Australia teams all hung in the balance, with all three in semifinals contention depending on the result.

But it was finally Afghanistan that went through to a semifinal Wednesday against South Africa. Unbeaten India will play defending champion England on Thursday.

Sharma posted this tournament’s fastest half-century — off 19 deliveries — and finished with eight sixes and seven boundaries as India plundered 205-5.

Travis Head kept Australia in the chase with a blistering 76 off 43 balls, but his teammates choked against spinners Kuldeep Yadav (2-24) and Axar Patel (1-21) to be restricted at 181-7.

“It’s quite satisfying, especially when you play like that,” Sharma said. “We don’t want to do anything different (in the semifinals), we want to play the same way, understand what the individuals need to do in a given situation, and play freely.”

Sharma set the tone when he smashed Mitchell Starc's second over for 29 runs, including three sixes.

Virat Kohli was out for his second duck in the tournament, caught at midwicket off a Josh Hazlewood short ball. Kohli has just 66 runs in six games but fellow veteran Sharma was held back only by a five-minute rain delay.

“The 50s and 100s don’t matter, I wanted to bat with the same tempo and carry on," Sharma said. "You want to make the bowlers think where the next shot is coming, and I think I managed to do that.”

In total, 76 of his runs came from boundaries and sixes. He became the first batter to hit 200 sixes in T20 internationals, and he also passed Kohli (4,103) and Pakistan’s Babar Azam (4,145) as the leading scorer in international cricket's shortest format.

Sharma had the first century of this tournament in sight before he was undone by Starc’s yorker in the 12th over.

But middle-order batters Suryakumar Yadav (31), Shivam Dube (28) and Hardik Pandya (27) ensured India of the joint highest total against Australia in men's T20 World Cup history.

Only Hazlewood (1-14) bowled at the right lengths in his four overs.

Australia lost David Warner in Arshdeep Singh’s (3-37) first over, but Head and captain Mitchell Marsh (37) counterpunched with a brisk 81-run, second-wicket stand.

Patel's brilliant one-handed catch removed Marsh, and Yadav bowled Glenn Maxwell on 20 in the 14th over.

After Head was deceived by Jasprit Bumrah's slower ball, Australia’s challenge fizzled out.

“It’s disappointing,” Marsh said. “India got the better of us … we’ve seen for 15 years what Rohit Sharma can do in that kind of mood, and he got off to an absolute flier.”

Afghanistan batted first and made what seemed an inadequate 115-5 in a match it had to win to reach the semifinals for the first time.

Then in a dramatic second innings with rain hovering and three nations gripped by the action, Bangladesh fell short in a hectic effort to surpass Afghanistan’s total in 12.1 overs — which would have sent it into the semifinals.

Afghanistan’s victory was finally sealed when the last Bangladesh wicket fell with the total 105 at 1:10 a.m. local time. Few dared leave the ground as they were gripped until the end by the action and the kaleidoscope of changing fortunes.

Rain interrupted the match on four occasions, adding more drama and bringing revised targets into play.

In an breath-taking finish to the Super Eight stage, there were four main scenarios. If Afghanistan won it would go through. If it rained and the match ended without a result, Afghanistan also would progress.

A Bangladesh win would end Afghanistan’s campaign and send Australia through. But if Bangladesh won within 12.1 overs it would go through on net run-rate and both Afghanistan and Australia would go home.

When Afghanistan made only 115 after choosing to bat, all of those scenario’s remained in play. Rain eventually reduced the chase to 114 from 19 overs.

Naveen-ul-Haq dismissed Taskin Ahmed and Mustafizur Rahman with the last two balls of the 18th over to clinch the match and finish with 4-26. Litton Das carried his bat and finished 54 not out for Bangladesh.

“We have worked so hard over the past few years and we were dreaming and we were waiting for this day,” Naveen said. “When that day comes and it happens, it’s a surreal experience."

As he spoke, the Afghanistan players carried their captain Rashid Khan around the field as rain fell.

“It’s a massive celebration back home. In this World Cup, I think the country will be very proud,” Rashid said in a later TV interview. “I’m so happy the way we’ve delivered as a team.”
