How to Travel to Russia on a Budget

TripSavvy / Christopher Larson

Russia , especially its capital cities, can be quite expensive for travelers. But don’t despair–even if you are traveling to Russia on a budget, you can still find places to stay and things to do that won’t cripple your bank account. Even better, by traveling in this way you will get to see more of the “real” Russia than by staying at a lavish hotel and going to the most expensive restaurants–these activities are usually reserved for tourists or the nouveau-riche. Traveling in Russia on a budget can be challenging, but it is by no means impossible! Here are our best budget travel tips for Russia travelers:

Getting There

For most people, there is, unfortunately, no way to get out of the expense of getting a Russian visa ; luckily, the cost is not prohibitive. Once that cost is out of the way, however, getting your ticket to Russia is a new problem. Many commercial airlines fly to Russia, but the cost can be outrageous.

If you have the time, and especially if you plan to spend some time in other parts of Europe, consider traveling to a more accessible European country and finding your way to Russia from there. Germanwings, for example, operates a direct flight from Berlin to Moscow Vnukovo airport. EasyJet and Ryanair will get you to Tallin or Riga, where you can take a direct train to Russia operated by Russian Railways.

If you will be visiting multiple cities in Russia, take the train and make sure to book your train tickets online well in advance. Book tickets directly on the Russian Railways website to eliminate agency fees.

Sightseeing

There are many free things to see and do in Russia, from cathedrals and monuments to beautiful nature sites. As an example, the Kazan Cathedral in St. Petersburg , the Alyosha statue in Murmansk , and Lake Baikal in Siberia are all free to visit. Most churches and monuments are free, except for the most famous cathedrals. In the smaller cities, especially outside of Moscow, the Golden Ring and St. Petersburg, almost everything is free or costs very little, even the museums!

And of course you can enjoy Russian history and culture without even stepping foot into the museum – simply walk around and observe the Soviet and Czarist architecture, the metro stations, parks and heritage sites... and people-watch!

On that note, take the metro! It is much cheaper, and - believe it or not - easier than getting a taxi, and also extremely convenient as you will not get stuck in traffic!

If you’re traveling on a budget, don’t even think about going to a Western-style “club”. These are reserved for the rich and fancy, with a strict dress code and an exorbitant cover charge. Instead, check out the local pubs and bars, which often have very affordable drinks and, late-night, offer a club-like atmosphere, with dancing and frequent live music shows.

Prices & travel costs in Moscow

Are restaurants expensive? How much does a coffee cost? How much money should you bring for a few days in Moscow? Discover how much it costs to travel to Russia and plan ahead to save money on your trip!

Moscow can be an expensive city to travel to, although booking hotels in advance can often mean finding good deals and saving money. Having said that, transport is relatively affordable, and exploring the Moscow Metro is like being in an art museum; parks, churches, and free walking tours provide a great way to save money, and it's possible to find deals at  restaurants to suit all budgets.

Tipping in Moscow  is not as widely expected as in other countries of the world. Tip tour guides around 10% of their daily rate, but in taxis, hotels, and restaurants only if the service warrants it.

Russia tour packages

Russia covid 19 tourist guide, about russia holidays, russia trip packages, why visit russia.

Russia is a very friendly tourist destination. With luxurious resorts, villas and bungalows, Russia ensures you of a great time during your vacation. The friendly locals happily host tourists and love to introduce them to Russian hospitality.

Russia has been a home to many artists, poets, political figures, and writers. Culture lovers would surely enjoy their time here. Every city in Russia has multiple museums and the towns boast of lovely architecture. Cities like Moscow and Saint Petersburg have a number of art galleries where you can spend your time enjoying remarkable works spanning decades.

Apart from Moscow and Saint Petersburg, other attractive places to visit in Russia include the imposing Mount Elbrus, breathtaking Valley of Geysers, fascinating Kizhi Island, and beautiful Lake Baikal. Among these places, Lake Baikal is one of the favourites because of its scenic charms. This lake is the deepest and the oldest on the earth and is known to hold 20% of water on Earth. Surrounded by mountain ranges, Lake Baikal has a picturesque view and stunningly clear water with abundant marine life that is visible. If you are travelling on your honeymoon or to seek luxury then you can easily spend a few days here at any of the quaint resorts.

Best time to visit Russia

Russia is an all year destination. Still the winters are very harsh and not everyone’s cup of coffee or hot chocolate. January is the best month to witness snow and around this time, Saint Petersburg also experiences long nights with day time spanning just a few hours.

Planning your vacation to Russia in the summers will assure you of an amazing time. The days are pleasant and the nights are perfect to take strolls in the city alleys. This season will disappoint you in a way because all the peaks are devoid of snow but on a plus side, the roads are open and water transport is completely operational. As the snow melts from the peaks and around Russian towns, beautiful flowers start blooming everywhere. Birds chirp around and green lawns make every corner of the country gorgeous.

During mid-summer in the northern city of St Petersburg there is no real darkness. This unique phenomenon is known as ‘the white nights’.
