Carnival corporation to strategically align portfolio and absorb p&o cruises australia into carnival cruise line.

Carnival Cruise Line to boost its capacity by absorbing P&O Cruises Australia in 2025, further optimizing the company's brand portfolio creating operational efficiencies 

MIAMI and SYDNEY , June 3, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- Carnival Corporation & plc  (NYSE/LSE: CCL; NYSE: CUK), the world's largest cruise company, today announced that in March 2025 , the company will sunset the P&O Cruises Australia brand and fold the Australia operations into Carnival Cruise Line , the most popular cruise line in the world. 

This change is the latest in a series of strategic moves designed to increase guest capacity for Carnival Cruise Line , the company's flagship brand and the highest-returning brand in Carnival Corporation's global portfolio. This will result in the addition of eight new ships to Carnival Cruise Line's fleet since 2021, including the successful shift of three vessels from sister brand Costa Cruises . In addition, the company recently placed its first new ship order in half a decade for two new Excel-class cruise ships to join Carnival Cruise Line in 2027 and 2028.

"In 2019, Carnival Cruise Line was 29% of our total capacity, and when we complete this move early next year, Carnival Cruise Line – our highest-returning brand – will make up approximately 35% of our total global capacity. While our company's overall growth between 2019 – 2028 is projected to be less than 2% (CAGR), the majority will be for Carnival Cruise Line , which will grow by approximately 50% over that time period."

In addition to further optimizing the composition of Carnival Corporation's global brand portfolio, the realignment will strengthen the company's performance in the South Pacific through numerous operational efficiencies.

"However, given the strategic reality of the South Pacific 's small population and significantly higher operating and regulatory costs, we're adjusting our approach to give us the efficiencies we need to continue delivering an incredible cruise experience year-round to our guests in the region. Carnival Corporation & plc remains committed to Australia and we will continue to be the largest cruise operator in the region with 19 ships calling on 78 destinations and representing almost 60% of the market."

Building on Shared Legacy in the Region  As the P&O Cruises Australia brand retires early next year, the Pacific Encounter and Pacific Adventure ships will be rebranded and operated by Carnival Cruise Line brand. Pacific Explorer will exit the fleet in February of 2025. Current itineraries will operate business as usual, and guests will be notified in the coming days of any changes to future bookings as a result of this announcement.

When the transition is complete next year, Carnival Cruise Line – which has served the South Pacific since 2013 – will have four ships in the market, including Sydney -based Carnival Splendor and Carnival Luminosa sailing seasonally from Brisbane , in addition to their new sister ships Encounter and Adventure.

Ship Overview

AIDAprima is the first of two Hyperion-Class cruise ships built at Nagasaki Shipyard in Japan by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries. This is the world's first cruise ship to use MHI’s proprietary technology, a system that forms small air bubbles at the bottom of the ship and decreasing friction between the hull and sea. 

AIDAprima never fails to impress guests with comprehensive on-board activities and a variety of state-of-the-art facilities and attractions. The highlight of the high-quality equipment of the ship is the beach club, where guests can relax and dance at one of the beach parties until sunset. In addition, AIDAperla has a large activity deck, which scores high with its four varied attractions, mini-golf, climbing garden, a water slide and the lazy river. AIDA Cruises culls fourth small passenger ship in a year

Carnival Corp did not return calls enquiring about the passenger vessel’s fate

Aida Cruises is getting rid of yet another of its small cruise ships without saying what it will do with the vessel.

The Germany-based Carnival Corp brand said on Thursday that the 1,266-berth AIDAaura (built 2003) “will leave the AIDA fleet” in September.

The ship, which was built by Nordic Yards of Germany and is flagged in Panama, has a market value of $61m and a demolition value of $11.8m, according to VesselsValue.

The AIDAaura is the fourth small passenger ship in AIDA Cruises’ fleet that the brand has culled in the past year.

Carnival said that the ship’s “farewell season” will begin on 9 January in Cape Town and end in August with voyages to Iceland and Greenland after boarding about 1m passengers since going into service two decades ago.

Calls to New York-listed Carnival were not immediately returned.

In June of last year, Carnival announced that it will not return the 1,266-berth AIDAvita (built 2002) to service from its Covid-19 pandemic lay-up , but the company did not disclose its plans for the ship.

In January 2022, the brand sold the 1,248-berth AIDAmira (built 1999) to UK-based Ambassador Cruise Line.

The buyer renamed the vessel Ambition with plans to return it to service this year, but it actually secured a six-month contract in August 2022 from the Scottish government to house Ukrainian refugees in Glasgow.

AIDA Cruises sold the 1,186-berth AIDAcara (built 1996) in June 2021 to Russian cruise start-up Aquilon Shipping, which renamed it the Astoria Grande . Its current owner is Goodwin Shipping.

The 2009-built AIDAluna cruise ship is the third Sphinx-class AIDA liner, with sisterships AIDAdiva and AIDAbella .

The vessel (IMO number 9334868) is currently Italy- flagged (MMSI 247255400) and registered in Genova .

History - construction and ownership

AIDA Cruises is a Rostock -headquartered subsidiary company owned by Carnival Corporation . AIDA is Europe's largest German cruise line (followed by TUI ) targeting younger and more active travelers. AIDA was founded in 1960 (as "Deutsche Seereederei") and in 2000 was acquired by P&O Princess Cruises, which merged with Carnival Corporation (shipowner) in 2003. AIDA's first World Cruise (AIDAcara) was in 2017-2018 (October-February) with 116-day roundtrip itinerary from Hamburg Germany .

The 2100-passenger ship AIDAluna pioneered the fleet's poolside/outdoor theater (dimensions 8 x 4.5 m). The vessel's godmother is the German fashion model Franziska Knuppe. The christening ceremony took place at Palma de Mallorca , on April 4, 2009, during the maiden voyage.

Besides the ship's staff and crew, AIDA cruise passengers are also served by Peper robots - the latest cyborg technology implemented fleetwide in 2016. These humanoid robots greet and guide passengers upon embarkation. They also assist them throughout the cruise by providing information and tips on onboard dining, entertainment, enrichment program (workshops, pre-scheduled events), casino and shopping promotions, shore excursions and tours. Pepper robots are mobile and communicate in 3 languages (English, German, Italian). They can also interpret human emotions by analyzing voice tones and facial expressions.

Decks and Cabins

AIDAluna staterooms (1025 total, in 18 grades) include 16 Suites, 480 Balconies, 186 Oceanviews, and 359 Inside cabins. The largest accommodations are the Aft-Facing Deluxe Suites (sized 400-470 ft2 / 37-44 m2, with private sundecks/wraparound terraces sized 270-540 ft2 / 25-50 m2).

The boat has 13 decks , of which 11 are passenger-accessible and 6 with cabins.

Shipboard dining options - Food and Drinks

AIDAluna offers rich restaurants’ choice for her guests, such as the Rossini, the Markt-Restaurant, Buffalo Steak Restaurant, Bella Vista (serving pizza & pasta 24-hours per day), sushi bar. AIDAluna restaurants are open seating. The buffets give passengers the chance to try food from several countries. Good wines are available to try. The Markt buffet Restaurant is located on deck 9. It is self-service and has a diverse and rich buffet. There are no strict dress codes or fixed dining times. Basic beverages, including house wines and beer, are free of charge at the buffet restaurants.

• Almhütte (added during 2019 refit) boasts ski-lodge style, tasty dishes from the Alps, and hearty music. Passengers can enjoy pork knuckle, cheese spaetzle noodles, snacks, and fresh draft beer. Service and foods are included in the fare, with a surcharge for drinks.

• Pizzeria Mare (Italian pizza restaurant; complimentary, self-service/buffet dining).

Shipboard entertainment options - Fun and Sport

AIDAluna boasts a total of eleven bars. The ship is famous with her good internet connectivity and a theatrium with a total floor area of 3,000 m2 (its stage can be reconfigured for different shows). SPA & Sports facilities include AIDAluna SPA and fitness areas which are in a favourable location above the bridge. This area provides palm trees, hammocks, cabana-style beds, and an enormous Jacuzzi. Volleyball, golf, squash, and many other sports are offered to AIDAluna passengers as the finest amenities for recreation.

• Internet stations with printers (located in the Reception/Lobby area; Wi-Fi coverage is available shipwide, including in all guests rooms)
• Studio AIDA (TV studio, producing films related to ship's itinerary and activities, plus a radio program)
• AIDA Luna Bar (cocktail bar with live music)
• Theatrium (948-seat, 3-deck high; a combination of an Atrium and a theatre, with glass walls, a stage with dynamic platforms, and glass dome; hosts large-scale productions). Unique to the AIDAluna ship show held here is Augenblick (a futuristic musical introduced in 2018). The new show features artists interacting with the theatre's large LED screens, aerial acrobatic performances (bungee ropes), special effects.
• Art Gallery (Kunstgalerie; sells original artworks of renowned art schools and German artists; hosts art auctions)
• AIDA Lounge (with 270-degree panoramic views and comfortable seating)

• Photo Gallery & Shop (professional photo & video services, duty-free accessories and equipment; new feature are the photo kiosks with touch-screens /face-recognition system). Fujifilm Wonder Photo Shop (added during 2019 refit) turns photography into a creative experience via a wide variety of materials.

Luna is AIDA's 3rd vessel (delivered by Meyer Werft Papenburg on March 16, 2009), which Maiden Voyage started on March 22nd from Hamburg . The 14-night one-way inaugural cruise itinerary (Hamburg to Palma de Mallorca) visited 8 port cities in 5 countries - Le Havre (France), Santander and La Coruna (Spain), Lisbon (Portugal), Cadiz (Spain), Tangier (Morocco), and Valencia and Barcelona.

The ship christening ceremony was held on April 4th, in Port Palma (Mallorca-Majorca Island, Spain) . The ship's godmother was Franziska Knuppe (1974-born German fashion model and actress).

After the Mediterranean, the vessel relocated to Northern Europe for a summer Baltic season, then it was repositioned to the Canary Islands for winter 2009-2010.

Fun fact is that she is also the godmother of AIDA's 14th fleet member - AIDAmira (fka Costa neoRiviera/now Ambassador Ambition) that joined the fleet in 2019.

The Theatrium is a 3-level entertainment complex transforming the Atrium into a Theater. There is also a 4D Cinema fitted with moving chairs. A biking station provides bicycles used on shore excursions in ports of call. A significant amount of indoor-outdoor space is devoted to sports. The Pool Deck area also acts as an outdoor entertainment space. Dining options include 3 informal buffet restaurants, three specialty restaurants (dining at extra charge), plus informal venues for light snacks, pizzas, coffee/tea.

All documents, signage and announcements on board are in German, as the majority of AIDA passengers are German-speaking Europeans (Germans, Austrians, Swiss). The crew is international, many of them well-speaking English.

In May 2024 was announced the fleet modernization program "AIDA Evolution".

Drydock refurbishment 2026

Starting in 2025 with AIDAdiva, these  drydocking  projects are scheduled for AIDA's three SPHINX-class ships (diva/2025, bella/2025, luna/2026) and include extensive renovations in all public areas, complete redecoration of all passenger staterooms, machinery updates (technical equipment and systems), increasing suites number, adding exclusive areas and venues (restaurants, bars, services) currently available on newer ships.

AIDAluna's refurbishment in 2026 is scheduled for April (dates TBA), to be conducted at Chantier Naval de  Marseille .

Wetdock refurbishment 2019

The ship's wetdock refurbishment 2019 (April 3-16) was at Blohm+Voss Shipyard ( Hamburg Germany ) and resulted in the following changes:

A new lounge facility (Almhutte) is a lodge-style dining venue featuring traditional dishes from the Alps and live music performances. Almhutte represents an expanded restaurant concept with a gourmet menu offering complimentary specialties like pork knuckle, cheese spaetzle noodles, light snacks, draft beers. Service and food are complimentary, all beverages cost extra.

AIDA Shopping World is a new retail via partnership with the 1879-founded Hamburg-based company Gebr. Heinemann SE & Co KG. AIDA Shopping World features an innovative design and 400 m2 (4300 ft2) retail space with special offers from world's most famous brands.

Fujifilm Wonder Photo Shop is another new venue offering an interactive experience.

All passenger staterooms and some public areas were renovated and modernized. All restaurants, bars and the SPA complex were refitted.

During refurbishment 2019, the vessel also received technical upgrades (related to shoreside power capabilities ), scheduled regular maintenance works (including stabilizers and propulsion units - bow and stern thrusters), Navigation Bridge refurbishment, diesel-electrical plant upgrades, exhaust system and ballast-tanks cleaning, hull coating works.

Drydock refurbishment 2014

During the drydock in 2014 (April 26 - May 5, at Blohm+Voss Hamburg) were conducted regular maintenance works (stabilizers, steering, body, machinery), installed new exhaust system (scrubber), renovation works (flooring, cabins, public areas, carpeting, new deck floorings).

A face recognition system was installed at AIDA Photo Shop (reducing printing chemicals and paper consumption by 50%).

Korolyov or Korolev is an industrial city in Moscow Oblast, Russia, well known as the cradle of Soviet and Russian space exploration. As of the 2010 Census, its population was 183,402, the largest as a science city. As of 2018, the population was more than 222,000 people. It was known as Kaliningrad from 1938 to 1996 and served as the leading Soviet center for production of anti-tank and air-defense guns. In 1946, in the aftermath of World War II, the artillery plant was reconstructed for production of rockets, launch vehicles, and spacecraft, under the guidance of Russian scientist and academician Sergei Korolev, who envisioned, consolidated and guided the activities of many people in the Soviet space-exploration program.
