Insider's Guide to Northwest Trek Wildlife Park

Adorable baby animals plus our best tips for the tram tour, hidden gems and more.

Northwest Trek tram tour

“Whoa!” said my son, “I think that bison is looking at us !” We were on the Discovery Tram Tour at Northwest Trek Wildlife Park , and one bison in a group we were passing did seem to have its eye right on us.

Northwest Trek is an open-range zoo near Eatonville and the the tram tour is the highlight of any visit to the park. You’ll have plenty of “this-isn’t–like-a-regular-zoo” moments at Trek, where animals native to our region roam free or spend their days in large exhibits that mimic their natural habitats. Northwest Trek celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2015, opened an expansive kids' play area in 2016 and continues as a uniquely Northwest destination and a not-to-be-missed wild time for animal lovers of all ages.

Key highlights of a trip this summer include American bison calves born to Northwest Trek's resident animals in late spring and growing quickly. They are with their herd, roaming the park's hundreds of acres, and can be viewed from the tram tour. Animals include bison, elk, bighorn sheep and mountain goats (roaming freely); and grizzly bears, bobcats, wolves and eagles (in naturalistic exhibits).

“It’s always exciting for us to witness the joy and wonder on our visitors’ faces when they get to experience seeing a new calf or lamb for the first time,” Northwest Trek education curator Jessica Moore said.

In addition to riding the park’s tram, visitors can walk forested paths to view American black bears, a grizzly bear, Canada lynx, gray wolves, red foxes, beavers, a river otter and other animals.

Northwest Trek exists because of the generosity of Doc and Connie Hellyer, who donated the land to Metro Parks Tacoma with the goal of preserving a home for animals and teaching visitors to love nature. The park opened on July 17, 1975.

Our family thinks Northwest Trek warrants a visit any day, especially if you have kids who love nature or animals or are entertaining guests from out of town. We’ve been going to Trek since our boys were small and we’ve learned a few tips and tricks to help you make the most of your visit.

1. Go early for best animal viewing

Animals at Trek tend to be more active early in the morning, particularly during warmer weather. If you arrive in the afternoon on a hot day, you’ll likely be there for nap time!

2. Time your tram

The highlight of your Trek visit will be the Discovery Tram Tour  through the park's 435 wild, free-roaming acres, a 50-minute, naturalist-narrated ride that gets you up close and personal with the animals in a truly unique way. You might see a trumpeter swan gliding on the lake, goats leaping in the meadow, or deer grazing on the hills. The animals are free to roam through the area, and every season at Trek offers something different. Late spring is the time to see baby animals, and late summer brings the sound of bugling elk.

Tram tours run every hour (10 a.m–6 p.m. during the summer) and you pick your time when you purchase admission.  Do not be late for your tram time, and make sure little ones have used the bathroom first. Though food isn’t generally allowed, the friendly driver will tell you that your small children are welcome to have their sippy cups and crackers. They want all their riders happy! Window seats are best, but you’ll get a good look at the action from any seat. The drivers are trained naturalists, and they’ll share lots of information about Trek and the animals.

You can also pay extra for a specialized tour , such as a Photo Tour or Keeper Tour.

3. Pack a picnic

There is food at Trek — think standard burgers and sandwiches — but we suggest packing a picnic. There are lots of tables near the front entrance.

4.  Dress for walking

In addition to the tram ride, Trek features a walking tour that is paved, making it wheelchair and stroller friendly, though there is one fairly steep slope down to the tram.  You’ll want comfortable shoes to be able to take it all in. Exhibits include raptors, such as eagles and turkey vultures; Cat Country, with bobcat, lynx, and cougar; and the Northwest Loop with bears, fox, wolves and coyotes. There are also wetland and forest animals.

5. Prepare your kids for this type of zoo

Note: If kids hear the word "zoo," they may be thinking lions and tigers. You may want to read some stories on area animals before you go, so your children understand what they'll be seeing.

6. Don’t miss the hidden gems

Don’t miss the E.H. Baker Cabin when you’re by the wolves. It’s a small cabin where kids can experience being scientists and (my boys’ favorite part), duck into a little tunnel where a window looks directly into the wolf exhibit.

If you have trouble seeing the bears, we’ve found they’re usually in the back. To find the cats, you often have to look up, up, up, into the trees.

The wetland and forest animals may not have the wow factor of some of the other creatures, but these exhibits are particularly nice for younger children because the animals are easy to spot and fun to watch. There is a small, underground section where you can see them going in and out of their homes, and there is an overlook where you can see some of them having a swim.

7. Talk to the naturalists

Take time to enjoy a trailside talk with a naturalist.  They often have some creatures or interesting exhibits with them. It’s a great chance for kids to ask questions.

8. Stop at the Discovery Center

Don’t miss the Cheney Discovery Center . It features educational exhibits, books, and puppets. There are also typically animal- or nature-themed crafts, and there is always a volunteer or naturalist on hand to answer questions and help out. It’s a nice stop if the kids are tired or you hit a rain shower. It can be hard to get kids out of here, so you may want to go after your tram ride.

Kids' Trek playground at NW Trek

9. Make a day of it — wild play time included

Trek really isn’t on the way to or from anything. Plan to make this a full-day outing. Kids won't let you miss Kids' Trek , the half-acre, adventure-themed playground opened in 2016. If needed, plan on having the kids passed out in the back seat when you head for home.

10. Zip wild into the trees

If you need more adventure, Trek offers five different high ropes courses suitable for various ages .  Admission to these is separate (and not cheap), but may be worth it if you need to bond with a thrill-seeking teen. (As of this writing, no one in our household has braved them!)

After four years of diligent fundraising and planning, Northwest Trek officially opened its doors on July 17, 1975. Over the next 15 years, the park expanded its exhibits, debuting the snowy owl, cougar, bobcat, lynx, wolf and bear exhibits. On January 20, 2006, Dr. Hellyer passed away and in July of 2012, his devoted wife, Connie, passed away. Their passion and commitment to Northwest wildlife and habitats lives on at Northwest Trek Wildlife Park. Is it safe to bring your toddlers?

Yea, I see families with toddlers all the time. The tram tour is 40 minutes minimum - I have been on it when it has gone an hour before - so you may want to pack snacks!

How much time do You need at this park?

It takes me roughly 3 hours to get through Northwest Trek provided I don't go on any of the trails. The tram ride is about an hour by itself. Some times, if it's cool enough outside, it will take me four if the animals are particularly active. I… more

Amazing Wildlife Park, probably one of the most beautiful habitat based zoos I've ever seen. I feel like the animals are very content to live in a spacious peaceful environment (if they have to live in captivity at all). Each enclosure was spacious and lush and beautiful. When we arrived the Tram was booked up for the day within the first half hour, I guess it was a busy day. We did opt to upgrade to the drive through tour and the guide was delightful with his narrative.

Their tram has been down for over a year now. Still charging full price even though you only have access to half the park. Bought a family membership a year ago because we were told by staff the tram would be back up by summer. It's been a year, still no tram. They will not extend our membership or compensate in any way. I personally do not think the price is worth what you get as a guest.

Beautiful wildlife park! Lots to see, we were there when the wolves started howling so that was the highlight of our trip! Very fun nature inspired kids play space make sure to hit on your way out. It was our first time here and I did have to ask for directions and everyone I encountered was super friendly and helpful. Wear comfortable shoes, bring snacks and water.

My son had wanted to go here ever since he say a Blippi episode. We finally had to chance to go. You can have an experience of driving through and walking through the park, special 4 wheel drive with walk through park, or just walking through. There are lots of picnic tables for lunch time or snack time. There is a huge play area for the kids. They also have a Cafe and food stands open during parts of the year. Don't forget a gift shop. The food was so so but we were supporting them. My son says thumbs up.

Don't think I'd spend $23 again for the walking tour but still glad we got to see some cool animals. The cats were hiding the entire time so we didn't see any during our 2 laps around the park in the morning but got some up close viewing of the bears doing funny things which was cool.

DO IT! Visited Aug 2022 Located 1hr south of Seattle is this wildlife park that you can buy tickets to walk into or drive through (which also allows you walk-in the entrance as well). You get the biggest bang for your buck if you drive through then walk in the park but we didn't have enough time to do both. We drove through in our car, which they started during the pandemic and worked out for us. I'm not sure when they'll switch from private vehicle to their brand new electric trams but it's going to happen soon. The "Wild Drive" was $90 for a vehicle up to 8 people. The walk in entrance would have been about the same cost for the 4 of us and we got to see a bunch of caribou, bison, and deer without leaving our air conditioned car. We could've seen more wildlife if we went in but we were exhausted. I wish we had spent a whole day here, I'm sure there's a ton of stuff we missed.

It was a great time, enjoyed it very much. The animals were so beautiful! Loved the new trams!

New Trams

My and the minions love going here, best to go first thing before more people show up or all the noise may scare the animals into hiding particularly the foxes. Speaking of noise, the news electric trams were pretty good with fast access even with it being just recently started. They are a bit cramped and if the other families sharing the tram with you have a screaming miscreant child, you're stuck there for an hour with no where to run, while your sanity bleeds out your ears faster then an eldritch horror could even hope to take from you. Overall though, after the excedrine kicked in, it is always a good experience and well worth the membership.

Awesome Experience. The animals here are RESCUES and are native to the PNW. What a great experience, to learn about these animals. The Wild Drive is cool and feels like Pokemon Snap. :) 10/10 experience for people who love and care for animals, habitats and preservation of nature.

Our Visit To Northwest Trek Wildlife Park Near Mount Rainier

We may earn money or products from the companies mentioned in this post. As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases.

During a recent trip to Seattle for a family reunion, we had the opportunity to do some sightseeing around the Puyallup area. We rented a great Airbnb near Graham , Washington, close to my Aunt and Uncle’s house for a few days. Our extended family with kids of all ages wanted a fun half-day outdoor excursion to immerse ourselves in the natural beauty of the northwest and create lasting memories. On the recommendation of my Aunt, we decided to visit Northwest Trek Wildlife Park near Mount Rainer.

Grizzly Bear at Zoo near Puyallup Washington

It was a wonderful experience, and we wanted to share it with the world! And here is a fun fact! Did you know that I was born and raised in Washington State?

In fact, both of my parents are from there, and most of our extended family is still in the greater Tacoma / Puyallup area. We try to travel there once every few years!

Northwest Trek Wildlife Park

Northwest Trek Wildlife Park is a 723-ace natural wildlife area near Mount Rainier’s base. It’s best described as a mix of a park, a wildlife preserve, and a zoo. Particularly, it offers a spectacular array of fun and engaging activities for families with kids of every age.

Just a few of the exciting things you can do at the park are watch many different native northwest animals such as grizzly bears, otters, and eagles, drive through a giant free-range preserve filled with animals, find and study the indigenous giant banana slug, and enjoy a forest-themed kids playground filled with nets, rope ladders, bridges, and slides.

Walking Paths At Northwest Trek Wildlife Park

Northwest Trek Wildlife Park has a network of excellent walking paths snaking throughout the park. Walking these paths is a fantastic way to get a feel for the natural majesty and beauty of the pacific northwest. The emerald green landscape is lush and filled with massive trees, delicate ferns, shady glens, crystal clear creeks, and bucolic ponds.

Map Of Northwest Trek Wildlife Park

You can download a map of the park, and its trails, here . It’s a great resource when navigating the park and planning your visit. In addition, I will also insert a copy here now.

Seeing The Animals At Northwest Trek Wildlife Park

The walking paths will lead you through a wonderfully designed set of natural enclosures that will get you breathtakingly close to all kinds of animals, large and small.

Part of the path will lead through upper and lower deck viewing areas where you can see grizzly bears (brown bears) and black bears. Nearby are separate enclosures with red foxes, wolverines, and grey wolves.

Further along, is the “cat loop.” This trail takes you to several large areas inhabited by cougars, lynx, and bobcats. Another part of the walking trail takes you through beautiful enclosures designed to be both above and below water.

You can watch playful river otters, raccoons, skunks, porcupines, and beavers here. A trail branch is designated for birds called “Eagle Passage.” Also, they have several gorgeous bald and golden eagles, owls, and vultures here. These massive birds are regal and beautiful. Sadly, they cannot fly due to pre-existing injuries and are living their best lives at the park.

Animal Encounters at Northwest Trek Wildlife Park

When we went, the animals were active and easily visible. It was a warm summer day in late July, almost hot by Pacific Northwest standards. The river otters were fascinating to watch, with their limitless energy and desire to play.

Likewise, the aquatic displays are especially great for kids because they can get a close-up view of the river creatures. A massive grey wolf rested probably three feet from us, just beyond the glass viewing area. The wolverines darted to and fro. The weather was dry, and it hadn’t rained in a few days, so, unfortunately, the beloved and iconic banana slugs were in hiding, much to Matt’s dismay.

A group of people at Northwest Trek Wildlife Park looking down into the river otter exhibit

The cats were also lying back in the shade for the most part. Obviously, if we had gone earlier in the day when there was less heat, more of them would have been out and about. Nonetheless, we were able to catch a glimpse of most of them.

Northwest Trek Wildlife Park may be the only smallish park I have ever visited that is home to grizzly bears and wolves. It was a fantastic treat to see the vast array of animals, some of which you may only see in major metropolitan zoos and other world-class facilities.

Kids Trek Playground

The Kids Trek Playground is at the front of the park, near the main entrance and dining area. Kids Trek is a fun and well-designed playground. Specifically, it’s perfect for kids ages 3-8.

The playground is themed like a forest landscape. Its centerpiece is an impressive fake 20-foot tall hollow tree stump you can climb inside to access the upper level of the playground. In addition, there are rope nets and ladders connecting different areas, tunnels where small ones can crawl and explore, and several fun slides.

Two boys playing on the playground at A young boy playing on a bridge at Northwest Trek Wildlife Park

A charming little stream flows through the playground, allowing kids to get a little wet as they play safely. The area is a lot of fun, even for adventurous adults, and is a great place to blow off steam and wear the kids out. Also, its proximity to the dining area and restrooms makes it a perfect spot to spend time and enjoy the outdoors.

Above all, this was the biggest hit with my 3-year-old nephew!

Cheney Discovery Center

Located nearer the back of the park, the Cheney Discovery Center is an interpretive nature center packed with many fun things for younger kids to do and see. The building houses various reptiles, gophers, snakes, amphibians, banana slugs, and other creatures viewable in tanks. It’s got tons of puzzles and books to occupy small kids and educate them about the local flora and fauna. There is an extensive collection of animal-themed puppets and a stage where you host your own puppet show!

A river otter at Northwest Trek Wildlife Park

The Cheney Discovery Center is home to a large and diverse array of stuffed animals (the taxidermied kind) where kids can touch and learn about many small and large animals up close. Equally important, the King of the Invertebrates, the banana slug, is prominently represented. You can see them in tanks, watch videos about them, and read everything you ever wanted to know about these fascinating gastropods.

Furthermore, an on-site naturalist is available at the Center to guide you through the exhibits or answer any questions you or your children may have.

Two kids playing at Northwest Trek Wildlife Park

E.H. Baker Cabin

Abutting the wolf enclosure is a building called the E.H. Baker Cabin. In this forest cabin, kids can crawl through a tunnel, explore a variety of educational tools about wolves, and become regular members of a wolf pack! There’s a natural wolf pelt to feel and an exhibit explaining how we can all do science daily.

This is an excellent place for kids to play, imagine, and channel their inner naturalist.

Self-Guided And Guided Driving Tours at Northwest Trek

Although we didn’t do this, I wanted to mention the driving tours. Northwest Trek Wildlife Park near Mount Rainier offers two types of driving tours through its 435-acre free-roam area. Both include park admission, so factor that into your decision.

In one, you drive your own vehicle, and the other, albeit much more costly, allows you to ride in theirs. The free-roam area is a game preserve inhabited by numerous animals that can move freely and graze across a large area of grass and woodlands. You can see Roosevelt elk, moose, bison, and mountain goats living in their natural habitat.

Kids Trek Play Area at Northwest Trek Wildlife Park

The Northwest Trek Wildlife Park Wild Drive

The Wild Drive is self-led and allows you to drive your car on designated roads throughout the free-roam area. The price is $90/group for non-members . The maximum group size is eight and includes the people in your vehicle. The tour is about an hour long. Reservations are required.

Park admission is included with this option, so it may actually be a way to save money if you have a large group.

Keeper Adventure Tour

The Keeper Adventure Tour is a guided jeep tour through the free-roam area. A park naturalist takes your group in a jeep on a guided tour. These tours are much more personalized and allow you to get closer to the animals wherever they might be grazing. The price is $90/per person for non-members .

The maximum group size is nine. The tour is about an hour and a half long. Reservations are required. All guests must be 5 or older to participate.

Northwest Trek Wildlife Park Tram Rides

A tram ride through the animal free roam area was once very popular in the park. As of this writing, the tram rides have been temporarily suspended. The park is replacing the legacy trams with new modern electric trams. The trams will, hopefully, again be available soon, with an anticipated launch date of September 2023.

The Zip Wild zip line course is also closed until further notice.

Honestly, we didn’t miss either of them and had a great time exploring the park on foot.

Plan Your Visit to Northwest Trek Wildlife Park

Without a doubt, Northwest Trek Wildlife Park near Mount Rainier is a great place to take your family. It offers so many different options for fun. It is a perfect way to explore the beautiful natural world of the Pacific Northwest. Walking through the park and watching the amazing animals will leave you with a sense of awe and reverence for nature.

Lastly, seeing the animals in the wild and learning about their life and habitat is a magical learning opportunity for your family. Playing at Kids Trek and exploring the Cheney Nature Center add to this beautiful park’s fun and excitement too. I highly recommend making Northwest Trek Wildlife Park a part of your trip to Mount Rainier, Seattle, Tacoma, or Washington State.

Northwest Trek Review

Sharing is caring!

The first time I went to Northwest Trek , I was visiting my cousins who lived down the street from there and I remember seeing big animals in the wild and it felt like I was somewhere in the mid-West.

Upon hearing glowing reviews of the new Kids’ Trek at Northwest Trek, my family decided to make the trek to Eatonville (South of Puyallup) to discover it for ourselves. Kids’ Trek lived up to the hype! The sand pit is one of the coolest features because they have a fountain in the middle so kids can wet the sand for their creations. A staff member told us that they clean it out everyday so it doesn’t clog. There are also slides carved into the stones, bridges, and lots of play space. Owen was focused solely on the sand pit, but we saw a lot of preschoolers and older kids take advantage of all the features.

The new Kids Trek provided hours of fun for our family.

The new Kids Trek provided hours of fun for our family.

The Discovery Tram Tour was a lot slower and longer than I remembered as a kid. Owen loves trains and I had told him that the tram was like a train. Actually, I told him we were going to ride in M’tambo from Chuggington. He enjoyed the first 15 minutes or so of the tram ride, but after that he was a bit bored. Granted there were three of us crammed into two seats and it was a full tram. But, it was really cool to see the animals so close and in a more natural environment. And the tour guide was funny and very informative.

After the Northwest Trek tram ride, we decided to walk around a bit to see even more animals on the Walking Tour. We were able to see black bears and grizzly bears before we turned back. We had opted not to bring a carrier or stroller, which limited how long we were willing to walk at a toddler-pace. Next time I think we will bring our BOB stroller so we can move quicker and enjoy the awesome scenery!

Souvenirs from Northwest Trek

We enjoyed these souvenirs from Northwest Trek.

There is a Forest Cafe on premises at Northwest Trek. The food is actually not that bad and there is a decent selection of sandwiches, burgers, salads and kids meals. Next time we might bring sack lunches and drinks and eat at the picnic tables just for more variety. They also have snack stands with lots of yummy treats!

Adult admission is $21.95, toddlers ages 3-4 are $10.95 and kids 2 and under are free. Admission includes the tram ride. Pets are not allowed and please don’t feed the animals. Parking is free, but the lots fill up quickly in the summer months and on weekends. For more information, visit www.nwtrek.org .

Kids Trek at Northwest Trek – Nature Themed Playground Kids Will Love!

Kids Trek at Northwest Trek

Northwest Trek is a favorite destination among locals and tourists alike, especially with its close proximity to Mt Rainier National Park, Paradise Entrance. It’s about 45 minutes distance from Northwest Trek in Eatonville to the park entrance. But, from the amazing views of the mountain as you get close to Northwest Trek, you realize it’s so much closer as the crow flies. Even within Northwest Trek, you get beautiful glimpses of Mt Rainier peaking out above the hills. We have loved Northwest Trek for years & had a membership the last few years as it is a family favorite to visit to see all the wildlife up close & personal. The featured activity at Northwest Trek is the Tram Ride, which is a 50 minute long ride through the free roaming area to see native Northwest animals in their natural habitat. You get an up close view of bison, bighorn sheep, mountain goats, elk, moose, & more! Plus, you’ll find more Northwest native animals on a walking tour around the park, such as grizzly & black bears, mountain lions, beavers, owls & many other animals.

They even have zip lining at NW Trek , if you are really looking to make a day of adventure out of it!

Kids Trek Playground Review:

Climbing Area at Kids Trek

Well, now Northwest Trek has gotten even better than it already is with the addition of the long-awaited Kids Trek playground for kids. Kids Trek is a $1.9 million, half acre playground that has been in the works for many years. It is a nature-based playground & adventure area for kids ages toddler to tweens.  There is no additional cost for Kids Trek – admission to the playground is included with your Northwest Trek paid admission.

We had the opportunity to check out Kids Trek  with a couple friends so we could share with you a little about it,  in case you’re wondering what it’s all about & whether you should make a trip out there soon!  If you are debating it – let me tell you, this is a must-visit destination if you have kids !! I can honestly say that this is definitely the best playground I’ve found in the South Sound for kids (& maybe in Washington). It is huge – it covers half an acre, making it one of the largest playgrounds in Washington.  It is full of so many different activities that all ages will enjoy – from kids who love quiet activities of building forts & playing in the sand to those who love adventure & climbing ropes, swinging down poles & more. We were there for a short visit yesterday, but my girls honestly could have spent an hour or two there. They can’t wait to go back & are already talking about the areas they want to spend more time in.

Kids Trek 20 Foot Tall Tree Trunk

What I love is that Kids Trek is a very unique playground, very different from most playgrounds you will visit as they really tried to stay true to the nature of Northwest Trek park.   The design of the playground is to  teach kids all about nature and foster imaginative play, while having fun as they explore the different areas of the playground. All of the materials are very realistic-looking and they incorporated many native plants (even ones that were transplanted with the construction of the park & replanted), downed trees from the Free Roaming area of the park to create benches and tree stumps to jump on, large rocks from around the park & more. Along the paths, they have leaf imprints & animals tracks for kids to try to identify which animal the tracks belong to – so many little touches like that to foster learning & curiosity about nature as the kids play & explore.  This is truly an environmentally friendly play space that kids will love and learn more about wildlife & nature thru play.  It is also ADA-accessible so that children of all abilities can enjoy this playground.

What’s included in the Kids Trek Playground ::

Here are just a few of the kids’ favorite places in the Kids Trek area. As a mom, I appreciate the fact that even though it’s a large play space, there is just one entrance into the Kids Trek – so there is only one way in & out. Most large playgrounds are not set up this way but I think this is a very important safety feature.

Kids Trek Toddler Area

Toddler Zone – There is a special area that toddlers & preschoolers will love (as you can see big kids love it too). It is an area with two log cabins & benches inside as well as balance beam and the popular tree stumps to jump on (which were a popular spot for kids to play before Kids Trek arrived). Not only does this area have wood chips, but underneath the wood chips there is an extra layer of padding to provide some cushion for the little ones if they fall.

Kids Trek Sand Area

This  sand play area with shovels & buckets will keep the little ones busy building and they can use the “weeping” rock for wet sand for better sand sculpting. This picture only shows a portion of the sand area – it is huge so plenty of room for lots of kids to enjoy this area!

Root Wad Cave & Tree Tunnel

Root Wad Cave & Hollowed Out Tree Tunnel   in “Construction Zone” – There is an actual root wad that they have reinforced with building supplies to make it long-lasting as well as a hollowed out tree for climbing through. But what makes it so unique is that it is a “building” area where kids can gather long sticks from a wood bin and create special caves, forts, etc. I’d say this is definitely going to be an area that older kids will love and want to spend a lot of time in (reminds me of building forts at the beach with driftwood), but you’ll want to keep an eye on little ones who could come in contact with these busy builders & the long sticks as they are moving them from place to place.

Net Tunnel at Kids Trek

Cargo Net Tunnels & Climbing Areas – There are so many great places to climb & crawl through in the Kids Trek. Here’s an example of one of the cargo net tunnels up on the upper climbing area that kids can use to get from one place to another either by crawling or climbing through.

Water Play Area at Kids Trek

Water Play Area – This is going to be a popular spot in the warmer weather of late spring/summer & early fall. Kids can get right into the stream and little waterfall for some fun water play and climbing over the rocks. There’s also a water pump so they can pump out more water to enjoy too.  You might want to bring a change of clothes for little ones as I anticipate they will have fun splashing in this water area.

Covered Picnic Area at Kids Trek

Covered Picnic Area – We love to bring a lunch to Northwest Trek to eat in the sunshine or under the covered area, so I’m glad to see that they have built in a covered picnic area in the Kids Trek area as well. This will be a nice area for parents to hang out while kids play or take a break with lunch or a snack. The only time this will not be available is if there is a birthday party using the covered picnic area.

Features of Kids Trek Playground::

  • Hollowed-out tree trunk climber: A 20-foot-high simulated tree trunk with nets inside for kids to climb on
  • Series of scrambling nets: Three wide rope nets on which kids can crawl and climb up, down and side to side
  • Tunnel slide: A slide through a dark tunnel with a surprise 30-degree bend
  • Jiggly bridge: A little swaying bridge to walk over, high above the main floor of the playground Eagles nest: A large, round series of taut ropes that form an area in which kids practice their balancing skills
  • Log cabins: Kid-sized log cabins in a special Toddler Zone
  • Root wad cave: A private space to sit and think or talk with a friend under piles of huge tree roots
  • Animal tracking: Kids can follow animal tracks embedded in cement to learn more about predator and prey
  • Sand and shovels: A toddler “construction area,” complete with a weeping rock so young builders can have wet sand for sculpting
  • Bubbling stream: A signature feature that burbles over rocks into a cascading waterfall, disappears in the beaver lodge and then reappears at a spot where two whimsical otter statues play
  • Beaver lodge: Visitors will swear real beavers built this structure of branches and twigs, complete with a realistic beaver statue standing watch. It’s the perfect picture stop – and a great space to learn more about nature’s amazing construction engineers

Wild Days of Play Program::

Kids Trek at Northwest Trek

With the addition of Kids Trek now at Northwest Trek, they also are starting a new program called Wild Days of Play . This is a once a month hour long program that will be free for kids with paid admission/membership to NW Trek and taking place within Kids Trek. The Wild Days of Play program is designed for kids ages 5 – 12. Each hour long session will include a take-home craft and an activity children can use to continue learning as they explore Northwest Trek the rest of the day.

When: This will take place on the first Saturday of each month at 11am in the Kids Trek area

Schedule: Check out the full schedule of topics for Wild Days of Play . Topics include Wild Play, Wild Living, Wild Eating & more.

Birthday Party Rentals:

If you’re looking for a unique place to hold a birthday party, Kids Trek would be a place that kids would have a blast exploring the playground, plus they will have access to the whole park & tram ride, too. Birthday party packages include a 90 minute rental of the covered picnic area in Kids Trek. The Kids Trek is still open to everyone, but you can use that whole covered area for food, presents, & more. Plus, you’ll get admission for 15 people to Northwest Trek & a tram tour, too. The price is $299.95 for the 15 people (kids & adults) & they do offer add-ons such as Animal Encounters, Nature Exploration carts & more.
