Work and Travel- podliczenie zarobków i kosztów od a do z

Kochani, od dwóch miesięcy najczęściej piszemy ze sobą o programie work and travel w USA.

Podsumowanie kosztów wyjazdu Work and Travel z agencją CCUSA w moim przypadku wyglądało następująco (2 lata temu):

My wzięliśmy około 1300 $. Więcej o wyjeździe znajdziecie we wpisie Work and Travel z CCUSA .

Bilety lotnicze* – Myrtle Beach do Miami, Miami do Chicago, Chicago do Las Vegas, Las Vegas do San Francisco + autobus z San Francisco do Los Angeles

Work and travel bez zwiedzania?

Jeśli wybralibyśmy się na program Work and Travel to Poland , czyli wariant bez zwiedzania to kalkulacja wyglądała by zupełnie inaczej.

Świetny poradnik, konkretny i szczegółowy!

Z tego powodu też chcę się podzielić informacjami o work and travel w USA 🙂

Konkretnie i rzeczowo.

Świetnie to podsumowałaś Aniu!

The U.S. Summer Work Travel (Work and Travel USA) J-1 visa program is one of the major Exchange Visitor Programs carried out pursuant to the U.S. Mutual Educational and Cultural Exchange Act of 1961. Its purpose is to enhance understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries through educational and cultural exchanges. Participants during several months on program have opportunities to get to know about American culture, traditions, open society principles, see and get to know America “from inside”. Participant‘s status allows to be employed legally in USA for up to 4 months during summer vacation season, in order to defray (mostly or at least partially) expenses which participants incur (program, flights, accommodation, food, transportation, cultural events, travel, etc.). "Work and Travel USA" (WT) program is worth to participate for students, at least once per life. It is the most popular cultural exchange and work experience program for students from many countries of the world. The U.S. J-1 visa Exchange Visitor programs are strictly regulated by the U.S. Department of State (DoS). DoS designates the appropriate U.S. organizations (which meet the obligatory criteria and comply with DoS regulations) to be program sponsors - granting the right to conduct pogram and be responsible for participants (whom sponsor accepts) for the duration of program. Most sponsors are the private sector non-profit non-governmental organizations. In order sponsor can run the program with appropriate offices, staff and communications, the program fees are applied for participants. Program fee must include the apropriate insurance meeting or exceeding the standards set by DoS. There is also an additional obligatory U.S. Government fee for Student and Exchange Visitor System ( SEVIS ). It is good that for WT applicants the SEVIS fee is significantly discounted - just 35 U.S. dollars (USD) recent years.

Program sponsor provides insurance (included into program fee) for up to 3 - 4 months to WT participants. Sponsor provides a telephone line (usually toll-free) to contact sponsor (during business hours) on actual questions during program. Sponsor also provides a toll-free emergency telephone line (24 hours, 7 days a week) to contact sponsor in emergency case.

Our Center cooperates with several WT program sponsors. Some sponsors however accept applications only from Lithuanian citizens, so for international students the options available are (partialy) less.

Eligibility Criteria for Work and Travel USA (WT) progra m applicants :  a) Full-Time students (bachelor or master) at university or college in Lithuania ; b) 18 – 28 years age (student/s of 29 - 30 years age may apply, if program sponsor allows);  c) English - at least Upper Intermediate level.    Notes in regard to students citizens of non European Union ( non-EU ) countries:       for many previous years, J-1 visa issue rates at U.S. Embassy in Lithuania were very good not only for Lithuanian, EU citizens but also for students non-EU citizens who studied in Lithuania on the 2nd, 3rd year of bachelor studies, on the 1st year of master studies; for 1st year bachelor students and for graduating year students it is recommended to provide (during interview at U.S. Embassy) as many as possible additional proofs about their intention to depart from U.S. on time after WT program end;       during interview at U.S. Embassy student should provide a proof of Tuition Fee payment upfront for the next Autumn / Fall semester to university / college in Lithuania;      if student's Temporary Resident Permit (TRP) in Lithuania expires in August - September of current year, during interview at U.S. Embassy student should also provide the proof/s of application (started) for the TRP extension for the next academic year;    Note: I f student’s immediate family member/s (Mother, Father, sister, brother) lives / resides in USA currently, student should bring (to interview at U.S. Embassy) also dcument/s about that family member's legal status in U.S.

Options of WT program:      „ WT-Self “ (Self Placement / Self-Arranged / Independent) option – if student gets the employment offer by his / her direct communication with the U.S. employer - host company {Notes: offer must be on the standard form (provided by our Center); offer and host company must meet criteria set by U.S. DoS for WT program; offer must be re-confirmed directly to sponsor - by online (signature) and by phone}, including employers from the large list of U.S. companies available on our Center Clients‘ Sector, but not including U.S. companies which are accepting / recruiting via  "WT-Premium" option.     „ WT-Premium “ (Premium / Job Placement / Full Placement) program option - student gets the employment offer from the U.S. employer via our Center's partner in USA (online system, Skype interview, etc.). Assistance in obtaining employment offer is included into program fee. Please see the list of employers potential to recruit our Center applicants on WT-Premium program option - at our site page: http://lwc-wt.lt/wtusa/jobs/ and on  https://app.interexchange.org/cooperators/29706c28/job_listings .

WT Summer 2024 program fees due * :        WT-Self option program fee : 20 EUR + 900 USD  - for students registered * with Center up to 14th October 2023; 20 EUR + 950 USD - for students registered * with Center up to 14th November 2023; 20 EUR + 1000 USD  - for students registered * with Center up to 14th December 2023 ; 20 EUR + 1050 USD  - for students registered * with Center up to 14th January 2024 ; 20 EUR + 1100 USD  - for students registered * with Center after 14th January 2024 .      WT-Premium option program fee : from 220 EUR + 100 0  USD { depends on our partners / sponsors in USA ; discount possible for students who apply for WT-Premium early and complete their application set by the date - deadline set by Center};        SEVIS fee 35 USD { payable via our Center, altogether with major (USD) part of program fee} .     U.S. Visa fee 185 USD {payable at the bank office (in Lithuania) to the account of U.S. authorities, in Euros (in cash only ), equivalent (re)updated by U.S. authorities every few days}.     * Notes:    Registration at our Center is completed after student: a) provides a proof of Full-Time student status (university / college certificate or student ID,); b) has a brief interview with our staff member (by phone / Zoom / Skype / in office); c) signs the WT pogram Applicant / Participant Agreement with our Center; d) pays to Center the first part of program fee 20 EUR .      50 USD discount from the program fee possible for students who already took part at WT program in USA (via / with any organization / sponsor), for students who were applying for WT-2020 or WT-2021 program via our Center .      "WT-Premium" program fee part in Euros (220 EUR - common rate, though some other rate may be applied, depending on the U.S. partner - program sponsor, to be announce by Center) is payable:       either in 2 increments (e.g. 20 EUR + 200 EUR ) - if student wants to (first) seek the employment offer by direct communication to U.S. employers, including the lists on our Clients Sector of employers who were hiring WT participants recent years - seeking to secure a spot to WT-Self program option (possible to apply for "WT-Premium" program option some weeks later);       or by 1 payment - if student wants to apply only for "WT-Premium" program option (to get the employment offer via our U.S. partner / program sponsor - preapproved already employer and offer, thus - faster way to get DS-2019 form, apply fo U.S. J-1 visa).     Application set is completed when applicant submits all documents due (WT-Self - including the employment / job offer form completed by the U.S. employer and suitable for WT program) and pays to Center the full program fee applied and SEVIS fee.    Program fee includes insurance (provided by program sponsor): some sponsors - up to 4 months ( fee supplement for additional insurance coverage period up to 1 month extra - from 50 USD ); some sponsors - up to 3 months ( fee supplement due for additional insurance coverage period, e.g.: 30 USD - for up to 2 weeks, 60 USD - for up to 1 month); some sponsors - even up to 5 months (the very maximal duration of stay in U.S. alloed for WT participants).    SEVIS fee and Visa fee are subject to be updated by the U.S. authorities; if updated - to be applied accordingly.    The annual numbers of WT participants are strictly limited by the U.S. DoS and sponsors, WT is very popular in many countries, so it is worth to apply as early as posible , in order to secure a place on the program. "WT-Self" major allocations are being filled over January or even earlier.

It is reasonable to apply earlier - advantages:      better opportunities to secure a place on the program (the numbers are strictly limited);      to have more time for communication to U.S. employers (for WT-Self option);      to get U.S. visa earlier,      to buy flight tickets to USA earlier – most likely less expensive.

During the most popular summer tourism period in USA (May - September, especially July – August and up to U.S. Labor Day – first Monday in September) plenty of seasonal jobs (especially in seasonal resorts) are available in hotels, casino resorts, shops, cafes, ice-cream, confectionary sales, souvenir shops, amusement parks, etc. U.S. employers (at least those who know WT program from previous year/s) are common to hire foreign students for seasonal work and can decide promptly (based on communication with student just by email, Skype, Facebook).

Salary in USA for WT participants must be on an hourly rate and not less than the U.S. Federal or State minimum hourly rate. For overtime (for work hours more than 40 hours per week) some companies are paying at a 1.5 times larger rate (though some companies are paying the same rate for overtime hours also – it depends on U.S. / state law). In tipped positions (e.g., waiter / waitress), hourly pay rate is less (it may be just some 2.5 – 5 USD/hour), but the tips usually exceed the difference over minimal wage rate.

Participants are responsible for their food, accommodation and daily transportation expenses in U.S. Some employers / host companies arrange accommodation (some – deducting accordingly from paychecks), some employers assist on accommodation (contacts, reference), some participants find accommodation on their own. For some U.S. locations (popular and / or expensive vacation destinations, etc.) sponsor/s require that host companies must arrange accommodation for WT participants (otherwise offer will NOT be approved by sponsor – applicant must promptly get employment offer from another host company and / or from other U.S. location).

Students who work in cafes, fast food restaurants may get some discounts for meals, at some companies students get one meal per work-shift for free. Salary in most U.S. companies is paid every two weeks.

WT participant must bring to USA not less than the minimum of money to support him/her until first paycheck received from employer. Sponsor usually request that participants must have at least 800 USD upon arrival to USA at participant‘s disposition.

WT program participant’s status allows student a possibility to work even for 2 host companies at the same period. You can find a second job when you are in USA, while already working for your major employer (pre-approved by program sponsor, usually before getting visa). If you see the note “Hiring” or “Help Wanted” on the company premises, you are welcome to come-in and express your interest for employment. If you want to work in a second job, you must get approval from program sponsor. If in your major job you get many overtime hours, there may be no need to look for a second job.

If WT participant has some trouble with his/her employer in U.S., s/he must inform program sponsor. If WT participant wants to change his/her major (approved by sponsor, usually before getting J-1 visa / coming to USA) employer, s/he must in advance discuss this opportunity with program sponsor and await for sponsor‘s decision (approval or not).

After finishing employment period, most WT participants travel in the USA some days or week/s: airplane, bus/coach, train, car, buying a weekly coach ticket / pass which allows to choose the route and time of travel (possibility to get out in some stop and continue your travel the next day/s). Some students visit also neighboring countries (Canada, Mexico, Carribean cruise) but for travel abroad it is obligatory to plan in advance: getting program sponsor’s additional signature on DS-2019 form original (students need to courier-mail their DS-2019 to sponsor a few weeks in advance, in order to get back their signed DS-2019 before departure from U.S.); entry visa to that country/ies; to return back to U.S. from abroad within J-1 visa validity dates.

U.S. Embassy in Vilnius, Lithuania has a very positive attitude to "Work and Travel USA" program. Nearly 100 % of WT program applicants Lithuanian citizens were successfuly getting J-1 visa for WT program at U.S. Embassy in Vilnius. For non-European Union citizens, WT program J-1 visa issue rate at U.S. Embassy in Vilnius recent years was a bit lower but quite good. If eligible and interested, you are welcome to apply - register with our Center ( http://lwc-wt.lt/contact/ ): Vilnius office - students studying in Vilnius ( please email first to [email protected] , to set the appointment time to come to office for registration) ; Kaunas office - students studying in Kaunas ( please email first to [email protected] , to set the appointment time to come to office for registration) ;  Kaunas office - students studying in Klaipeda, other cities in Lithuania ( please email first to [email protected] , to start and get directives for registration online ).

The program sponsors, help oversees students to prepare for this experience, obtain all necessary work documents (especially DS 2019 form), and provide supervision and emergency backup service throughout the program – they are „with you on the program”.

In relation to program regulations participants are allowed to work legally in the U.S. on the basis of the following documents: Job Offer Form – contract signed between Work and Travel participant and American employer and starting this year the sponsor organization. Employment dates MUST be compatible with program regulations.

DS 2019 form – document that permits participants to work legally in the U.S. Work and Travel USA participants may only work between the dates shown in box 3 on the DS 2019. This document will be provided along with a J-1 visa. Working outside of dates printed in DS 2019 form is ILLEGAL.

J-1 visa – visa that enables Work and Travel participants to work and travel in the U.S. in relation to program regulations and DS 2019 conditions.

Social Security Number – number used by the government to track tax payments. This is a crucial form of identification. You are not allowed to work legally without this number, therefore upon arrival it is mandatory to find the closest Social Security Office in your city and start the procedure.

As a Participant of the Work and Travel Program you are also obligated to register with SEVIS (Student and Exchange Visitor Information System) within 5 days of your arrival. This system has been set up by the government in an effort to keep track of all J-1 participants. PROGRAM OPTIONS

A – independent.

The independent option gives you the opportunity to arrange employment through your own sources (friends, past experiences etc.). The only thing your future employer will need to do before your arrival is to fill out the Job Offer Form, provide a copy of the Business License and Worker’s Compensation and confirm this employment with the sponsor . While on the Program the sponsor organization will monitor your whereabouts and any employment change must be first consulted with them.

This option is designed for those who:

  • would like to find employment at a specific time and in an individually chosen location,
  • are able to arrange employers through own existing sources (friends, own research, contacts. etc.)

There are earlier deadlines for submitting proper paperwork in this option.

B- Placement

CIEE/GE offer a full service Program with a work placement. Recruitment is generally done online/skype interviews ( Virtual Fairs ) and this year CIEE offers a new service – CIEE CONNECT

Virtual Fairs usually occur in February and March, but are not limited to these months. Most often these events take place in Warsaw. This is a great opportunity to meet the employers face-to-face, discuss everything in detail and ask all the questions that come to mind. It is a less stressful and more laid back form of recruitment. Only enrolled participants can participate in these events so therefore it is recommended to sign up for the Program in advance and get acquainted with current offers. BTC does not enroll more participants then the specified number needed  therefore sometimes the offers fill up very quickly. If the employers do not travel to Poland personally, you can still get a job with a company through Virtual Interview events. This is more flexible as you do not have to travel to a specific city and just go through an interview even from your home. BTC will schedule a proper day and time for your Interview and this way you will get an opportunity to introduce yourself to your potential employer via webcam. The interviews usually take about 5-10 minutes and are very effective. This is a fast and easy way to hold your interviews.

Work and Travel USA: Cena, podmínky a zkušenosti

V rámci programu získají vízum, přičemž 2 až 4 měsíce budou pracovat (a vydělávat) a poslední měsíc mohou cestovat. Celý Work and Travel USA navíc funguje pod záštitou amerického Ministerstva zahraničí.

Základní informace o Work and Travel USA

Jakou práci budete dělat na work and travel, cena work and travel usa a kdy se hlásit, zkušenosti s work and travel v usa, adina julinová.

Nejvíce ulehčenou cestu mají studenti, pro které americká strana připravila program Work and Travel USA. Ten má oficiálně sloužit k  seznámení studentů z celého světa s americkou kulturou a k větší diverzifikaci kultur napříč Amerikou .

Work and Travel USA je letní program, odlétá se zpravidla v květnu až červnu.

Podmínky Work & Travel USA

Pro účast v programu Work and Travel je nutné splnit všechny tyto podmínky:

Výdaje na Work and Travel v USA zahrnují zhruba následující:

Přihlášky do programu Work and Travel můžete každoročně zasílat zpravidla do dubna.

“If it scares you, it looks like good thing to try.”

Přišel poslední pracovní den a s ním velké loučení.

Ta svoboda, volnost, přes tisíc dolarů v kapse a celá Amerika nám ležela u nohou. Las Vegas , Grand Canyon , Los Angeles se všemi svými městy, San Francisco a pak New York.

Získala jsem přátele ze všech koutů světa, od Austrálie až po Maďarsko a docenila jsem slova ředitele kempu, když v úvodním týdnu nám všem říkal: “Forget about your friends from high school, your best friends are sitting in this room.”

“Zúčastnil jsem se už dvakrát programu Work and Travel, jednou jako plavčík podruhé jako bellman.

Work and Travel, takže Rusové, Turci, Ukrajinci a jiné národy.

@ Dan , @ Jelly : Ahoj, a z jakého campu jsi byl vyhozený?

@ Martin : Je to dva roky starý příspěvek, možná už sem ani nechodí.

právě jsem si přečetl tento článek o Work and Travel programu a chtěl bych požádat o radu kohokoliv, kdo má s tímhle nějaké zkušenosti.

Nechodím do žádné jazykové školy a ani nestuduji na vysoké škole, takže tím Work and Travel program by pro mě asi nepřipadal v úvahu…

Dobry den, mohu s work and travel J1 visa vycestovat v cestovni lhute 30ti dnu po ukonceni prace ven z Usa? Mexiko nebo Cruise? Diky

Zajímalo by mě zda Ti dal někdo rozumnou odpověď, moc by mi to pomohlo v uskutečnění mého plánu. :)

@ Kelly : Ahoj Kelly! Já si to budu muset ještě prodrobněji prostudovat.

Ahoj mám dotaz, je možné vyžiadať si pobyt cez work and travel v konkrétnom meste (San Francisco), alebo mesto nám bude priradené? Ďakujem. :)

@ Dominika : Ahoj Dominiko, záleží na konkrétní agentuře. Pokud si práci v San Franciscu najdeš sama, není to žádný problém. Pokud hledání práce necháš na agentuře, pak záleží na ní a na tom, jestli má partnery v San Franciscu. :-)

@ Václav : Ahoj Vašku, zajímalo by mě to samé.

[email protected]

@ Václav : Ahoj Vašku, a vycestovat do VB by tě nelákalo?

Ahoj, v létě 2016 jsem absolvoval work and travel na J-1 vízum.

Taky by mě to zajmalo. Dik

chtěla bych se zeptat, jaký typ víza potřebuji, chci-li do Ameriky pracovat na cca 4 měsíce jako plavčík a brigádu si zajišťuji sama. Je to vůbec možné se tam takhle dostat? Děkuji

Ahoj, chtěla bych se zeptat, jaký typ víza potřebuji, chci-li do Ameriky pracovat na cca 4 měsíce jako plavčík a brigádu si zajišťuji sama. Je to vůbec možné se tam takhle dostat? Bohužel od minulého roku už nejsem student, takže podmínky na work and travel nesplňuji, je tedy i nějaké jiné vízum, které tohle umožňuje? Děkuji

chtěla jsme se zeptat zda je možné vycestovat v programu” work and travel” bez agentury? tedy neplatit žádné poplatky, zažádat si o vízum J1 sama, a sehnat si práci sama. Jak v tomto případě postupovat? další dotaz: Jde v případě pracovní stáže udělat to samé? Je vůbec možné kontaktovat nějakou firmu v USA a získat oficiální pracovní vizum a sám si to zařídit?

děkuji za odpověd

@ Nicole : work and travel si muzes zajistit sama, ale je to slozite. U staze to muze byt jednodussi.

Ahoj, nechystá se někdo ted v létě 2018 na Work and Travel USA? Raději bych prvně jela s někým a ne úplně sama. :)

Ahoj, chci se zeptat kolik měsíců, jak dlouho musím pracovat, abych mohl pak měsíc cestovat a pokryl bych kompletně náklady na celý trip… Díky, pěkný den

@ Lukáš : Ten článek nahoře jsi četl? Případně jiné informace o WaT?

“Work and Travel USA je letní program, odlétá se zpravidla v květnu až červnu.

@ Lukáš : Work and Travel je kulturně výměnný program určený pro studenty všech ročníků VŠ a VOŠ. Jako student máte jedinečnou příležitost vycestovat do USA a legálně tam pracovat po dobu až 4 měsíců. Dalších 30 dnů můžete v zemi zůstat a cestovat. Zdroj: studentagency.cz. Abys tedy mohl mesic cestovat, muzes az 4 mesice pracovat. A naklady na tvuj trip ti tezko nekdo rekne, pokud nenastinis sve plany.

Hezký den, ráda bych se podělila o své video z loňského roku, kdy jsem vycestovala do Ameriky právě v rámci programu Work and travel USA.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ibJuaDI_T8Q&t=654s

@ Pavlína Horáková : Ahoj Pavlíno, děkuji za skvělé video! Mohu ho nasdílet na Facebooku Chci do Ameriky? Díky. :-)

Prosim Vas ci by ste mi niekto viac neozrejmili situaciu ?:-/

Thanks in advance :-)

No a když tam už nechodíš, tak ti ho nejspíš nedají.

FACT SHEET: President   Biden Announces New Actions to Secure the   Border

New actions will bar migrants who cross our Southern border unlawfully from receiving asylum Biden taking action as Congressional Republicans put partisan politics ahead of national security, twice voting against toughest reforms in decades

Since his first day in office, President Biden has called on Congress to secure our border and address our broken immigration system. Over the past three years, while Congress has failed to act, the President has acted to secure our border. His Administration has deployed the most agents and officers ever to address the situation at the Southern border, seized record levels of illicit fentanyl at our ports of entry, and brought together world leaders on a framework to deal with changing migration patterns that are impacting the entire Western Hemisphere.  Earlier this year, the President and his team reached a historic bipartisan agreement with Senate Democrats and Republicans to deliver the most consequential reforms of America’s immigration laws in decades. This agreement would have added critical border and immigration personnel, invested in technology to catch illegal fentanyl, delivered sweeping reforms to the asylum system, and provided emergency authority for the President to shut down the border when the system is overwhelmed. But Republicans in Congress chose to put partisan politics ahead of our national security, twice voting against the toughest and fairest set of reforms in decades. President Biden believes we must secure our border. That is why today, he announced executive actions to bar migrants who cross our Southern border unlawfully from receiving asylum. These actions will be in effect when high levels of encounters at the Southern Border exceed our ability to deliver timely consequences, as is the case today. They will make it easier for immigration officers to remove those without a lawful basis to remain and reduce the burden on our Border Patrol agents. But we must be clear: this cannot achieve the same results as Congressional action, and it does not provide the critical personnel and funding needed to further secure our Southern border. Congress still must act. The Biden-Harris Administration’s executive actions will:   Bar Migrants Who Cross the Southern Border Unlawfully From Receiving Asylum

  • President Biden issued a proclamation under Immigration and Nationality Act sections 212(f) and 215(a) suspending entry of noncitizens who cross the Southern border into the United States unlawfully. This proclamation is accompanied by an interim final rule from the Departments of Justice and Homeland Security that restricts asylum for those noncitizens.
  • These actions will be in effect when the Southern border is overwhelmed, and they will make it easier for immigration officers to quickly remove individuals who do not have a legal basis to remain in the United States.
  • These actions are not permanent. They will be discontinued when the number of migrants who cross the border between ports of entry is low enough for America’s system to safely and effectively manage border operations. These actions also include similar humanitarian exceptions to those included in the bipartisan border agreement announced in the Senate, including those for unaccompanied children and victims of trafficking.

Recent Actions to secure our border and address our broken immigration system: Strengthening the Asylum Screening Process

  • The Department of Homeland Security published a proposed rule to ensure that migrants who pose a public safety or national security risk are removed as quickly in the process as possible rather than remaining in prolonged, costly detention prior to removal. This proposed rule will enhance security and deliver more timely consequences for those who do not have a legal basis to remain in the United States.

Announced new actions to more quickly resolve immigration cases

  • The Department of Justice and Department of Homeland Security launched a Recent Arrivals docket to more quickly resolve a portion of immigration cases for migrants who attempt to cross between ports of entry at the Southern border in violation of our immigration laws.
  • Through this process, the Department of Justice will be able to hear these cases more quickly and the Department of Homeland Security will be able to more quickly remove individuals who do not have a legal basis to remain in the United States and grant protection to those with valid claims.
  • The bipartisan border agreement would have created and supported an even more efficient framework for issuing final decisions to all asylum seekers. This new process to reform our overwhelmed immigration system can only be created and funded by Congress.

Revoked visas of CEOs and government officials who profit from migrants coming to the U.S. unlawfully

  • The Department of State imposed visa restrictions on executives of several Colombian transportation companies who profit from smuggling migrants by sea. This action cracks down on companies that help facilitate unlawful entry into the United States, and sends a clear message that no one should profit from the exploitation of vulnerable migrants.
  • The State Department also imposed visa restrictions on over 250 members of the Nicaraguan government, non-governmental actors, and their immediate family members for their roles in supporting the Ortega-Murillo regime, which is selling transit visas to migrants from within and beyond the Western Hemisphere who ultimately make their way to the Southern border.
  • Previously, the State Department revoked visas of executives of charter airlines for similar actions.

Expanded Efforts to Dismantle Human Smuggling and Support Immigration Prosecutions

  • The Departments of State and Justice launched an “Anti-Smuggling Rewards” initiative designed to dismantle the leadership of human smuggling organizations that bring migrants through Central America and across the Southern U.S. border. The initiative will offer financial rewards for information leading to the identification, location, arrest, or conviction of those most responsible for significant human smuggling activities in the region.
  • The Department of Justice will seek new and increased penalties against human smugglers to properly account for the severity of their criminal conduct and the human misery that it causes.
  • The Department of Justice is also partnering with the Department of Homeland Security to direct additional prosecutors and support staff to increase immigration-related prosecutions in crucial border U.S. Attorney’s Offices. Efforts include deploying additional DHS Special Assistant United States Attorneys to different U.S. Attorneys’ offices, assigning support staff to critical U.S. Attorneys’ offices, including DOJ Attorneys to serve details in U.S. Attorneys’ Offices in several border districts, and partnering with federal agencies to identify additional resources to target these crimes.

Enhancing Immigration Enforcement

  • The Department of Homeland Security has surged agents to the Southern border and is referring a record number of people into expedited removal.
  • The Department of Homeland Security is operating more repatriation flights per week than ever before. Over the past year, DHS has removed or returned more than 750,000 people, more than in every fiscal year since 2010.
  • Working closely with partners throughout the region, the Biden-Harris Administration is identifying and collaborating on enforcement efforts designed to stop irregular migration before migrants reach our Southern border, expand investment and integration opportunities in the region to support those who may otherwise seek to migrate, and increase lawful pathways for migrants as an alternative to irregular migration.

Seizing Fentanyl at our Border

  • Border officials have seized more fentanyl at ports of entry in the last two years than the past five years combined, and the President has added 40 drug detection machines across points of entry to disrupt the fentanyl smuggling into the Homeland. The bipartisan border agreement would fund the installation of 100 additional cutting-edge inspection machines to help detect fentanyl at our Southern border ports of entry.
  • In close partnership with the Government of Mexico, the Department of Justice has extradited Nestor Isidro Perez Salaz, known as “El Nini,” from Mexico to the United States to face prosecution for his role in illicit fentanyl trafficking and human rights abuses. This is one of many examples of joint efforts with Mexico to tackle the fentanyl and synthetic drug epidemic that is killing so many people in our countries and globally, and to hold the drug trafficking organizations to account.

Mexico has a new president, Claudia Sheinbaum. What does it mean for the United States?

work and travel usa zarobki

When Mexicans elected a new president, they also chose the next negotiator-in-chief who will make tough choices with the United States on issues from immigration and trade to fentanyl trafficking .

Mexicans voted overwhelmingly for Claudia Sheinbaum, giving her more than 58% of the vote and a substantial mandate to govern the second-largest economy in Latin America and the No. 1 trading partner for the United States.

When President Andrés Manuel López Obrador leaves his post and Sheinbaum takes office on Oct. 1, she'll inherit a country that is reeling from slow economic growth and violence linked to organized crime . She'll also face a fractured relationship with the United States. Despite deep cross-border economic ties, the U.S.-Mexico relationship has been tested by the countries' shared problems with global migration and drug trafficking .

"The two countries have been suffering from an incredible fumbling of the ball in dealing with each other," said Tony Payan, director of the Center for the U.S. and Mexico at Rice University's Baker Institute. "I think the two countries need to come back to the table."

Politics: 'Finish the wall.' Why the southern border became a big issue for this New England state.

Americans may love "taco Tuesday" and vacationing in Cancun, but the complexity of the U.S.-Mexico relationship is often lost amid marketing and political rhetoric. Mexico’s stamp on the U.S. is everywhere.

It’s in the Mexico-made car parts  that keep U.S. autoworkers employed in Detroit , in the windmill blades exported to  U.S. clean energy plants , in the  pacemakers saving the lives of American patients  with heart failure, and in the $15  avocado toast on restaurant menus  nationwide.

U.S. exports to Mexico include grains grown in the Midwest and natural gas pumped in Texas. Mexico sends fruits and vegetables north, keeping grocery costs lower amid volatile inflation in the U.S.

The country  became the United States’ largest trading partner  last year, pushing China to the No. 2 spot, and the two neighbors now do  nearly $800 billion in trade annually , according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

But it’s a fraught relationship. Mexico is also the transit country for hundreds of thousands of U.S.-bound migrants, provoking repeated humanitarian crises at the U.S. border. And it’s the source country for the fentanyl that kills tens of thousands of Americans each year.

The U.S.-Mexico-Canada foreign trade agreement, known as the USMCA – negotiated during the Trump administration – is up for renegotiation in 2026. U.S.-based business leaders are concerned that renegotiating the deal could create uncertainty and hurt both countries' economies.

"Mexico is now the U.S.’s main trading partner," said Jennifer Apperti, director of the Texas-Mexico Center at Southern Methodist University. "To again reopen the door to things that have just been negotiated would be, honestly, not the best use of time. And business time is of the essence."

Domingo Garcia, president of the U.S.-based League of United Latin American Citizens, said in a statement that he looked forward to "building bridges" with the Sheinbaum administration.

In past meetings, Garcia said he found Sheinbaum "open, engaging, and willing to listen and share her thoughts on moving forward. Mexicans are vital to the United States' economic future and our hemisphere's overall robust vibrancy. At the same time, we must consider environmental and scientific initiatives in the interest of our well-being today and for future generations."

With an estimated 60% turnout for Sunday's vote, it was one of Mexico’s biggest elections in history. Nearly 100 million people were eligible to vote.

For the first time, Mexican citizens living in the United States were able to cast their ballots in person at 20 consulates in the U.S., including in Phoenix.

Fact Sheet: Presidential Proclamation to Suspend and Limit Entry and Joint DHS-DOJ Interim Final Rule to Restrict Asylum During High Encounters at the Southern Border

Today, the Biden-Harris Administration took decisive new action to strengthen border security, announcing a series of measures that restrict asylum eligibility, and significantly increase the consequences for those who enter without authorization across the southern border. These extraordinary steps, which will be in effect during times when high levels of encounters exceed our ability to deliver timely consequences, will make noncitizens who enter across the southern border ineligible for asylum with certain exceptions, raise the standard that is used to screen for certain protection claims, and speed up our ability to quickly remove those who do not qualify for protection.

These actions follow a series of steps that the Administration has taken over the past three years as it prepared for the end of the Title 42 public health Order, and since it was lifted last year, including surging personnel, infrastructure, and technology to the border, issuing the Circumvention of Lawful Pathways Rule, and referring record numbers of noncitizens into expedited removal. Over the past year, we have removed or returned more than three quarters of a million people, more than in any fiscal year since 2010. Despite these efforts, our outdated and broken immigration and asylum system, coupled with a lack of sufficient funding, make it impossible to quickly impose consequences on all noncitizens who cross irregularly and without a legal basis to remain in the United States.

The Administration has repeatedly called on Congress to provide the resources and legal authorities needed to secure our border. The measures announced today will better enable the Department to quickly remove individuals without a legal basis to remain in the United States, strengthening enforcement and change the calculus for those considering crossing our border irregularly. However, they are no substitute for Congressional action. We continue to call on Congress to provide the new tools and resources we have asked for to support the men and women on the frontlines.

President Biden issued a Presidential Proclamation to temporarily suspend the entry of noncitizens across the southern border. The Secretary of Homeland Security and the Attorney General also jointly issued an interim final rule that, consistent with the Proclamation, generally restricts asylum eligibility for those who irregularly enter across the southern border – including the Southwest land and the southern coastal borders. The rule also limits fear screenings to those who manifest a fear or express a desire to file for protection and heightens the screening standard for statutory withholding and claims under the Convention Against Torture. Taken together, these measures will significantly increase the speed and scope of consequences for those who cross our borders irregularly or who attempt to present themselves at Ports of Entry without authorization, allowing the Departments to more quickly remove individuals who do not establish a legal basis to remain in the United States. The restriction on asylum eligibility will be discontinued when encounters fall below certain levels but will come back into effect if encounters rise again.

The rule makes three key changes to current processing under Title 8 immigration authorities during periods of high border encounters:

  • First, noncitizens who cross the southern border unlawfully or without authorization will generally be ineligible for asylum, absent exceptionally compelling circumstances and unless they are excepted by the Proclamation.
  • Second, noncitizens who cross the southern border and are processed for expedited removal while the limitation is in effect will only be referred for a credible fear screening with an Asylum Officer if they manifest or express a fear of return to their country or country of removal, a fear of persecution or torture, or an intention to apply for asylum.
  • Third, the U.S. will continue to adhere to its international obligations and commitments by screening individuals who manifest a fear as noted above and do not qualify for an exception to the Rule for withholding of removal and Convention Against Torture protections at a reasonable probability of persecution or torture standard – a new, substantially higher standard than is currently applied under the Circumvention of Lawful Pathways rule.

Like the Proclamation, the rule provides for an end to these enhanced measures following a sustained reduction in southern border encounters. Specifically, these measures are in effect until 14 calendar days after there has been a 7-consecutive-calendar-day average of less than 1,500 encounters between the ports of entry. The measures would again go into effect, or continue, as appropriate, when there has been a 7-consecutive-calendar-day average of 2,500 encounters or more.

During periods of high encounters, the Proclamation will apply across the southern border. Lawful permanent residents, unaccompanied children, victims of a severe form of trafficking, and other noncitizens with a valid visa or other lawful permission to enter the United States are excepted from the Proclamation.

In addition, the suspension and limitation on entry and rule will not apply to noncitizens who use a Secretary-approved process—such as the CBP One mobile app—to enter the United States at a port of entry in a safe and orderly manner or pursue another lawful pathway.

Noncitizens who cross the southern border and who are not excepted from the Proclamation will be ineligible for asylum unless exceptionally compelling circumstances exist, including if the noncitizen demonstrates that they or a member of their family with whom they are traveling:

  • faced an acute medical emergency;
  • faced an imminent and extreme threat to life or safety, such as an imminent threat of rape, kidnapping, torture, or murder; or
  • satisfied the definition of “victim of a severe form of trafficking in persons” currently provided in 8 CFR 214.11.

Consequences

Noncitizens who are subject to the rule’s limitation on asylum eligibility and who manifest or express a fear of return to their country or country of removal, express a fear of persecution or torture or an intention to apply for asylum, but do not establish a reasonable probability of persecution or torture in the country of removal will be promptly removed.

Those ordered removed will be subject to at least a five-year bar to reentry and potential criminal prosecution.

The Proclamation and rule will significantly enhance the security of our border by increasing the Departments’ ability to impose swift consequences for individuals who cross the southern border irregularly and do not establish a legal basis to remain in the United States.  Together, the Proclamation and rule make critical changes to how the Departments operate during times when encounters are at historically high levels—levels that, in the absence of these changes, undermine the government’s ability to process individuals through the expedited removal process. These changes will enable the Departments to quickly return those without a lawful basis to stay in the United States and thereby free up the asylum system for those with legitimate claims.

These extraordinary measures are a stop gap. Even with these measures in place, the Departments continue to lack the authorities and resources needed to adequately support the men and women on the frontlines. The Administration again calls on Congress to take up and pass the bipartisan reforms proposed in the Senate, which provide the new authorities, personnel, and resources that are needed to address the historic global migration that is impacting countries throughout the world, including our own. Until Congress does its part, we will continue to take any actions needed under current law and within existing resources to secure the border.

Two-way travel on new South 216th Street bridge in SeaTac resumes Wednesday, June 5

  • Kris Olsen , communications, 206-440-4704

Work began in early 2023 to build the bridge one half at a time

SEATAC – A new, wider and longer South 216th Street bridge across Interstate 5 in SeaTac will open to both directions of traffic on Wednesday, June 5.

Construction crews working on the Washington State Department of Transportation’s State Route 509 Completion Project are nearly done building the northern portion of the bridge. The southern side of the bridge opened to westbound traffic on South 216th Street in December 2023, while eastbound traffic used a detour to cross I-5.

The longer South 216th Street bridge is needed to span additional lanes on I-5. These added lanes, currently under construction, will connect new on- and off-ramps between the future SR 509 expressway and I-5. The old bridge was 290 feet long, while the new bridge is 335 feet long.

In addition to being too short, the original South 216th Street bridge was outdated and unwelcoming for non-motorized travelers.

“The previous bridge’s sidewalks were too narrow for people who use wheelchairs and forced bicyclists merge with vehicle traffic to cross,” said Project Engineer Ward Anderson. “Replacing the bridge to accommodate the extra lanes on I-5 gave us an opportunity to create a bridge that serves the community better. It has dedicated bike lanes, ADA-accessible sidewalks and a new eastbound left turn lane onto Military Road South.”

Construction crews still have some work to complete after it opens to motorists. That includes installing curbs, gutters, finishing a sidewalk, final paving and permanent striping on the bridge and the surface streets on either side of it. This work will require ongoing single lane closures and at least two additional full road closures for the paving and striping.

SR 509 Completion Project information

The SR 509 Completion Project builds 3 miles of new tolled highway between I-5 and South 188th Street near the south end of Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. The new highway will be completed in stages. The portion currently under construction between I-5 and 24th Avenue is scheduled to open in 2025. The final stage will build the remaining 2 miles of the expressway between 24th Avenue South and South 188th Street. The entire project is planned for completion by 2028.

Puget Sound Gateway Program overview

The SR 509 Completion Project is part of WSDOT’s Puget Sound Gateway Program , which also includes the SR 167 Completion Project in Pierce County. Combined, the two completion projects finish critical missing links in Washington’s highway and freight network.
