Silja Symphony at Helsinki

In late November, we wanted to visit Stockholm for one day. We hopped onboard Tallink's m/s Silja Symphony which is a large ferry between Helsinki and Stockholm. Despite its strict schedule, the ferry offered us an experience akin to that of a leisurely cruise ship. To get insight into the interior of the ferry and its services, read the story of our cruise and learn how we reviewed the ferry.

Covered in the Article

Day in stockholm cruise, information about silja symphony, departure from helsinki, exploring the ferry, dinner at fastlane, shopping at tax-free, show at starlight club, breakfast buffet at grande buffet, time in stockholm, other services on the ferry, which is the best ferry from helsinki to stockholm, bottom line, cruise to stockholm onboard m/s silja symphony.

In late November, we decided to take another day cruise to Stockholm . We planned to spend our remaining Amex restaurant credits in the Oxenstiernan restaurant in Stockholm and after that, to visit Stockholm's Christmas Markets . We had a discount coupon for Tallink Silja , so we chose to board Tallink's m/s Silja Symphony , a sister ferry to Silja Serenade which we had previously experienced. In this article, we detail our trip and provide a review of the ferry.

Christmas Market

A day cruise from Helsinki to Stockholm is a convenient and cost-effective way to visit Stockholm. The ferry arrives in Stockholm at 10 am and departs back to Helsinki at 5 pm, providing 6 hours of efficient time to explore the Swedish capital .

Review of the SkyView Sightseeing Experience in Stockholm

M/s Silja Symphony is a big Finnish-built ferry that transports passengers and cargo between Helsinki and Stockholm. It was built in 1990 in Turku, Finland and the ferry is operated by Tallink . The ferry has almost 1,000 cabins and it can carry 2,900 passengers in addition to cars and trucks. It is one of the biggest ferries sailing in the Baltic Sea and it feels like a cruise ship.

Class A cabin

Our Cruise Experience

Last year, we had a day in Stockholm cruise onboard m/s Silja Serenade . To complete our ferry review articles, we booked our trip this time on m/s Silja Symphony which is a sister ferry to Serenade. Below, we review the services the ferry provided us.

Review of m/s Silja Serenade

Booking the trip on Tallink's website was straightforward. It functioned effectively and provided the ticket via email immediately after the payment. However, it may not always offer the most affordable rates. Due to a discount coupon we had, booking through the official channel was the best option for us this time.

Given the numerous ferries between Finland and Sweden , we advice to compare prices. Ferryscanner is a practical tool for this and it frequently finds the most affordable fares. Typically, weekdays outside the main season are the least expensive days to travel between Helsinki and Stockholm. Departing on Friday is usually the most expensive choice.

Silja Symphony departs from the Olympia Terminal in the South Harbour of Helsinki. It is accessible by tram in just 10 minutes from the Helsinki Central Railway Station. Alternatively, if the weather is favourable and you have minimal luggage, walking is a viable option as well, especially in the summer.

Upon our arrival at the terminal, we checked in using a self-service machine. The kiosk issued our boarding passes, and we were ready to board the ferry immediately. Boarding took approximately 15 minutes due to a higher number of passengers than usual.

Boarding the ferry was a pleasant experience even though the terminal is old and quite small.

Soon we were inside the ferry and the first task was to find our cabin. We had booked a small cabin in Class A which had an outside window, bathroom and two beds. Classes B and C are similar but they do not have windows and Class C is located at the bottom of the ferry. There is also Promenade Class which has a window to the central promenade of the ferry.

Class A cabin

The lock of our cabin's door was broken. We immediately called the ship's reception by the phone in the cabin and a friendly service man came in 10 minutes and fixed the lock. After that, we were ready to explore the ferry.

Entertainment on the Promenade

Since the ferry is quite old, now and then, there are minor things that need some repair.

We were already hungry, so we began our ferry exploration by having a meal. On this occasion, we opted not to avail of the full-inclusive buffet and instead visited the ferry's self-service restaurant known as Fast Lane . We ordered burger meals with drinks, and within 5 minutes, our delicious meals were ready to be picked up. A meal cost about 25 euros/person.

Hamburger meal

The Fast Lane restaurant, like most of the ferry's amenities, was situated on the Promenade , which is a lengthy and tall corridor running through the ferry. This practical design contributes to a spacious and expansive feel aboard the ferry. We are surprised that the newer ferries departing from Helsinki are not following the same design.

Fast Lane tables

Tall Promenade with glass roof makes the ferry bright.

Grande Buffet

After the meal, we felt, it was a perfect moment to explore the ferry's duty-free store. It was Black Friday, resulting in a busier store than usual. Various sales were ongoing, and it seemed that everyone had the same idea of indulging in some shopping. The tax-free store was uncomfortably crowded and we did not want to spend too much time there. Normally, people buy souvenirs, sweets, spirits, cigarettes and local products from the store.

Given that our primary intention was to visit Stockholm and not to shop extensively, we refrained from making excessive purchases. Instead, we bought some Christmas chocolates, snacks, and drinks to enjoy during our journey.

On the inbound journey, it was much more peaceful in the tax-free store.

Starlight , the nightclub of the Silja Symphony, features bars, a stage, and a casino. While the ferry offers free entertainment, there is a cost for drinks. We enjoyed an hour at the nightclub, tasting beer and Finnish lonkero while watching a cover band performing evergreen hits. Starlight is the place where the main entertainment of the ferry happens and it is also a place for dancing. The club is located at the bow of the ferry offering also a nice view outside.

We wanted to feel fresh the next morning and decided not to stay awake too long. That is why we headed to sleep in our cabin early.

In the morning, we start our day with a hearty maritime breakfast at the Grande Buffet restaurant. The buffet was situated below the Promenade and the selection was quite extensive. Regrettably, it was also crowded, but there were still numerous unoccupied seats and tables available.

Breakfast table

As usual on the Finnish ferries, the buffet offered a wide assortment of cold and hot dishes suitable for breakfast, along with inclusive coffee, tea, and other hot beverages. Unfortunately, there were long queues, and the restaurant's layout was not very practically designed for the large number of customers. A little patience was needed but we got a stomach-filling breakfast.

Coffee machine

After breakfast, it was time to exit the ferry and explore Stockholm. Silja Symphony arrived at 10 am at Värtahamnen Terminal in Stockholm so we took a metro from Gärdet station to the centre. It is also possible to walk to the centre in one hour if the weather is good enough.

On this occasion, we visited Stokcohlm's Old Town to experience its Christmas Market and then proceeded to another Christmas Market at Skansen. Following these outdoor activities, we enjoyed a delicious lunch, but time quickly passed, prompting us to return to the ferry to begin the inbound journey.

Elevator lobby

There were numerous other amenities aboard the Silja Symphony that we didn't have the chance to experience this time. The Promenade boasts several high-quality restaurants and bars. At the top of the ferry, there is a disco called New York Club & Lounge where you can also enjoy karaoke when the night is still young and party later. For those seeking relaxation, a visit to the ferry's spa is a recommended option. In the summer, spending time on the outer decks is a delightful choice, but during the winter, people primarily go outside for smoking.

Outer deck of Silja Symphony

The big selection of the services is the reason why many people come to this ferry just for relaxing. They do not even exit the ferry at Stockholm but enjoy the ferry's amenities. A day in Stockholm cruise is an inexpensive way to unwind even though you can easily spend hundreds of euros on the ferry if you avail of all the services you like.

Bow of Silja Symphony

We rate m/s Silja Symphony as a 4-star ferry, similar to our rating of m/s Silja Serenade. These ferries are nearly identical and provide the same level of service. Despite their age, they have been renovated multiple times and are still in good condition. They offer greater comfort compared even to newer ferries. Travelling aboard m/s Silja Symphony was a delightful experience which we can recommend to everyone.

Four ferries sail between Helsinki and Stockholm. M/s Silja Symphony and m/s Silja Serenade are operated by Tallink and the ferries are identical. M/s Viking Gabriella and m/s Viking Cinderella are operated by Viking Line and have different designs. Despite being of similar age, the ferries offer distinct experiences.

We appreciate Tallink's Stockholm ferries' pleasant design, featuring the tall Promenade through the ship. This design creates a lively atmosphere akin to a large shopping mall and a combined hotel. Conversely, m/s Viking Gabriella is smaller and more traditional, a quality that many, including ourselves, appreciate. The different concepts make it challenging to compare the ferries. M/s Viking Cinderella is a new addition to the route, and although it is also old, we have heard many positive reviews about it.

Cold lockers

If we were to select the best ferry between Helsinki and Stockholm, we might lean towards m/s Silja Symphony . However, the competition is tough.

Review of m/s Viking Grace from Turku to Stockholm

Review of m/s Baltic Princess from Turku to Stockholm

We knew what to expect when we boarded m/s Silja Symphony. The ferry fulfilled our expectations and we had only a little to complain. To broken door lock was an unfortunate event and the passengers in the cabin next to us were noisy. Luckily, all the services provided by the ferry worked well and the crew were friendly.

The weather was good and the winds were calm. Sometimes, the Baltic Sea is surprisingly stormy. Even though the ferries can operate in rough weather too, the sail may become a little uncomfortable. If you become early seasick, the shorter route from Turku to Stockholm may be a better choice.

Have you sailed onboard m/s Silja Symphony. Was your experience pleasant? Comment below.

For example, if your room is 10212, 10 is the level of your cabin, 2 is the number of the nearest lift and then 10212 will be the number of your cabin.

You will need to keep your card with you as this gets you in your cabin and gives you access to the buffet or any food if purchased beforehand. It works like a standard hotel room.

The dinner buffet on the Silja Serenade has a lot of options including a station dedicated to vegans. In the Moomin shop, you can buy everything Moomin – I found the plushies to be adorable.

silja cruise line

The Silja Serenade spa is called the sunflower oasis. It is situated on deck 12 and is considered a tropical paradise for the whole family. There is a jacuzzi, sauna and pool bar. There are also private saunas available for 1-10 people. During the summer months, the sun deck outside is open.

Cost of the Silja Serenade spa:

  • €8 Children aged 6-11
  • €3 Children 0-5
  • It is not recommended for children under 1-year-old this is due to the heavily chlorinated pools.

Silja Serenade Private saunas cost:

  • €85 per hour for a Family Sauna (1-5 persons) extra hour of €60
  • €175 per hour for a Group sauna (max. 10 persons) extra hour €120
  • €6 Swimming suit
  • €1 Extra towel

Silja Serenade Wifi

There are two different types of wifi onboard depending on your cabin type, premium or standard. I used the standard wifi and it worked well however it does cut out after a while of not using it. I also struggled to connect to wifi in my room. I did try with my Android and it worked well throughout the ship so I am thinking it may be an iPhone issue.

I was pleasantly surprised with the speed of the wifi as it never lagged when I was using social media or replying to emails. The password is on your pass.

Silja Line Entertainment

There is entertainment onboard in the evenings which you can watch (as these are included in your ticket). From Helsinki to Stockholm I watched a Queen tribute act and from Stockholm to Helsinki I watched an Abba tribute performance. Both shows were 45 minutes long and you had a choice of watching it at 19.30 or 21:00. The shows change often so you may have something completely different.

Silja Serenade Children Activities

Head to Silja Land a playroom with lots of fun games and toys to keep your children entertained during the cruise. In Silja land, you can also find an ice cream bar – delicious!

Meet a Moomin

How to book the Silja line Helsinki to Stockholm Cruise

Silja serenade vs silja symphony.

These cruise ships are both part of the Tallink Silja Line. They are very similar cruise ships however some restaurants and shops will differ.

Tallink Silja Serenade Review

This was my first cruise experience and it did not disappoint. The cabins were comfortable and clean however it was particularly rocky from Helsinki to Stockholm. The cruise is in the Baltic Sea and the weather conditions for that day weren’t great however coming back from Stockholm to Helsinki was relativity smooth. Do bear this in mind if you are thinking of booking a cruise and if you do suffer from seasickness make sure you bring appropriate medicines with you.

I feel that an overnight cruise is a great way to make the most out of your vacation and experience a cruise ship too. If you are thinking of heading to Stockholm the Silja Serenade may be a great option.

For reference, I stayed in the A-class cabin and ate at the Grande Buffet for breakfast and dinner. Watched the entertainment in the evening with my friends.

Silja Line Helsinki Tallinn Day Trip

Download the HSL website/app for public transport around Helsinki. I’d advise getting the app before you arrive if you plan to use any train or tram in Helsinki. Baltic Princess ferry Wiki

The ferry was specially designed for passengers and cargo shipping operations on the Tallinn-Helsinki route. Since February 2013, the ferry operates the route Turku-Aland-Stockholm. On the Tallinn - Helsinki route was deployed the fleet mate Silja Europa. This was TALLINK's 4th cruise ferry. The vessel was ordered on December 19, 2005. Its construction started on November 14, 2006 (keel-laying ) at STX Europe ( Rauma Shipyard Finland )

The ship was christened on March 6, 2008 ( Helsinki, STX Finland ), launched on March 9, delivered to TALLINK on July 10 and entered service on July 5, 2008. Vessel's forward section (hull and superstructure) was constructed at the French shipyard, then towed to the drydock in Helsinki, where the hull was completed. The shipbuilding order was financed by a EUR 132 million loan from a bank syndicate (HSH Nordbank, Nordea Bank, SEB Bank, EIB).

The ship is powered by 4x Wartsila marine diesel engines (model 16V32, combined output 32 MW). The propulsion system includes 4x bow thrusters (combined output 7,2 MW). The hull is ice-strengthened (class 1A Super) which allows year-round operations on Baltic Sea routes with extreme ice conditions.

The vessel's flag-state/registry in 2020 was changed from Estonia (MMSI 276673000, Port Tallinn ) to Finland (MMSI 230639000, Port Helsinki ).

Three oceans in 149 days: Silversea's new world cruise features its most destinations ever

silja cruise line

Silversea Cruises is known for epic globe-spanning itineraries. But the luxury line’s 2027 world cruise will take guests to more destinations than ever.

The voyage will feature highlights of the Pacific, Indian and Atlantic oceans over about five months. Passengers will visit 80 destinations – many of which the line has not previously included on a world cruise – in 35 countries.

“Calling in more destinations than any voyage in Silversea’s history, we proudly unveil The Three Oceans World Cruise 2027, which broadens our industry-leading offering of extended voyages,” the line’s president, Bert Hernandez, said in a news release . “Traveling aboard Silver Dawn, one of the smallest ships to embark on a World Cruise, our guests will venture off the beaten path to 80 destinations on five continents over 149 days, with the longest stays in port of any World Cruise.”

When is Silversea’s 2027 world cruise?

The cruise will depart on Jan. 8, 2027, from Los Angeles. Silver Dawn, which can accommodate 596 guests, will end the voyage on June 7 in Copenhagen, Denmark.

Where will the cruise sail?

Passengers will first spend 46 days sailing from Los Angeles to Brisbane, Australia, stopping in ports like Hilo and Kahului in Hawaii, Moorea and Bora Bora in French Polynesia and more along the way.

“As well as having the opportunity to visit the UNESCO-listed Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, guests will enjoy a bespoke World Cruise event on this beautiful archipelago, honoring ancient Polynesian seafarers at a sunset ho'olaule'a in Honolulu, with traditional fare, tropical libations, and a night of stargazing,” Silversea said in the release.

From Brisbane, the ship will head to Cape Town, South Africa. The ship will visit destinations like Singapore and the Maldives before guests spend a week on a “deep dive” into South Africa. On the final leg of the journey, passengers will explore other parts of Africa and the Mediterranean on their way to Northern Europe.

Other programming includes safari experiences, an overland trip to southern Africa’s Victoria Falls and a night of music at St. Anne’s Cathedral in Belfast, Northern Ireland. The itinerary features 11 overnight stops in ports such as Cairns, Australia; Colombo, Sri Lanka; and Bordeaux, France, as well.

Short vs. long cruises: Which one is right for you?

How much does the cruise cost?

Pricing info will be available on June 10. Silversea’s 2026 world cruise – which will sail for 140 days, also on Silver Dawn – currently starts at just under $89,000 per person based on double occupancy.

The cruise will be available for presale to members of Silversea’s Venetian Society loyalty program on June 20. Bookings will open for the general public on June 27. Passengers will receive perks like laundry service, spa treatments and more.
