New Jersey's Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR), which first opened back in 1928, is 15 miles southwest of Midtown Manhattan. One of three major airports in the New York metro area, it serves more than 30 airlines and millions of domestic and international passengers a year.

Historically, Newark Liberty has had the worst rap out of all the NYC-area airports and has been one of the least popular in the U.S. But after a multi-year, $2.7 billion renovation, the airport unveiled an update to its oldest terminal, Terminal A, in 2023. It's now considered one of the best in the world.

From the best dining and shopping to lounges, parking, and nearby hotels, here's everything you need to know about traveling through Newark Liberty International Airport.

Newark Airport Terminals

Newark Liberty International Airport has three standalone terminals : A, B, and C.

Passengers can travel between terminals, parking lots, shuttle stops, and rental car facilities on the AirTrain monorail, which operates 24 hours a day and is free to ride within the airport.

Air Canada, American Airlines, and JetBlue are among the airlines that operate out of Terminal A. Allegiant Air, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Delta Air Lines, Spirit, and several international airlines fly from Terminal B. United Airlines occupies all of Terminal C, with some flights operating out of Terminal A and Terminal B as well.

Newark Liberty International Airport provides free Wi-Fi and free charging stations throughout the terminals. Nursing suites are available in each terminal. The AtYourGate in-airport order and delivery app allows passengers to have meals delivered anywhere in Terminals A and B.

Newark Airport Terminal A

Popular New Jersey chains are the highlight of dining options in Newark Airport Terminal A, which contains 33 gates across three concourses. You can grab a sub from Jersey Mike's, a national chain headquartered in Manasquan, or order a banging breakfast sandwich from The Office Tavern Grill. Town Bar + Kitchen is the place to go for a good cocktail while you wait for your plane to board, but head to Carlitos at the end of concourse A1 for tasty barbecue tacos and Mexican beer. Of course, you can always get a burger from national chains BurgerFi or Shake Shack. All restaurants are past the security checkpoints.

Terminal A has your standard selection of souvenir shops and convenience stops. Pick up a shirt to remember New Jersey by at Just Jersey or Artist PopShop, which also sells lots of fun art gifts. Stock up on reading materials at Vue, stop by The Black Home for luxurious home goods, grab a snack from Shore Points Market, or shop for clothes at Tentree.

Newark Airport Terminal B

Pre-security food court options in Terminal B include Smashburger, Panda Express, Starbucks, and more. Budweiser Brewhouse is another place to sit down for a beer before going through security. The 24-gate terminal is split into three concourses. B1 has Malone's Fish Market, Sora Japanese Cuisine & Sushi Bar, and Little Tony's Pizzeria. In B2, you'll find full English breakfasts at Unusual Times, plus a couple of market stands and a coffee kiosk. B3 has diverse options at StrEAT Market and pizza by Piattino: A Neighborhood Bistro.

There are newsstands and duty-free shops on both sides of security. Past security, you'll also find souvenir shops like America! and an outpost of Lick, the popular Atlantic City candy stand.

Newark Airport Terminal C

United Airlines' three-concourse, 58-gate Terminal C has plenty of choices for grab and go, fast casual, sit-down dining, and cocktails.

There are Cibo Express Gourmet Markets on both sides of security and a central Global Bazaar food hall in concourse C1, where the Melange Bakery Café serves breads and pastries baked on site; Kaedama noodle bar offers Asian soups with fresh-pulled noodles; and Tsukiji Fishroom makes sushi, nigiri, and poke bowls with fish purportedly flown in from Tokyo. Many venues in the food hall change their names, overhead signage, and menus midday.

Your best bets for sit-down dining in C1 are Abruzzo Italian Steakhouse, Surf (sushi), and Daily (so named because its farm-to-terminal menu rotates daily). C2 has Vanguard Kitchen (fresh salads and pizzas), Happy Clam (seafood, etc.), and Little Purse (dumplings). In C3, Forno Magico (new American) and Saison (French) are great options. Tucked behind Saison is Classified, United Airlines' invitation-only restaurant.

As for drinks in Terminal C, opt for Oeno Wine Bar, Proof Whiskey Bar, Caps Beer Garden, or Tacquila.

Shopping options include Coach, Johnston & Murphy, Hudson Booksellers, L'Occitane, Lick, and The Miles Shop, where passengers can trade United Airlines frequent flier miles for electronics, toys, and other items, or earn bonus points for dollars spent. Cibo Express Gourmet Markets (all concourses) also stock unique gifts and gourmet food items.

Newark Airport Lounges

Terminal A has an Admirals Club for American Airlines travelers, a United Club, where Air Canada's lounge is located, and a Delta Sky Club . Terminal B has a British Airways Galleries Lounge , a Lufthansa Senator Lounge , another Delta Sky Club, and a Scandinavian Airlines SAS Lounge . In addition to two United Clubs near gates C74 and C93, Terminal C has a United Polaris Lounge with rainfall shower suites, workspaces, day beds, and a table-service dining area.

Newark Airport Transportation, Car Rentals, and Parking

You can travel between EWR and NYC, Newark, or other nearby New Jersey cities by taxi, van, or rideshare service . Taking a taxi to Manhattan will cost you about $50 to $70, or a minimum of $70 if you're traveling to EWR from the city. You can save by taking Coach USA's express bus , which costs $18.70 for a one-way and $33 for a round-trip ticket, or the train. NJ Transit's Northeast Corridor and North Jersey Coast lines connect Midtown Manhattan to the airport for $15.75 one way. Once you're at the airport, hop on the AirTrain , which travels between all terminals, parking garages, rental car pickup locations, and the on-airport railway station. If you buy an Amtrak or NJ Transit ticket to or from the airport, transportation on the AirTrain is included in the fee.

Speaking of car rentals, 10 companies operate out of EWR, including Alamo, Avis, Budget, Enterprise, Dollar, and Hertz. Parking at EWR ranges from $21 a day in economy lots to $44 a day in the short-term lots. Book your parking in advance for the lowest rates.

Review: New United Club Newark (Terminal C)

En route back to Toronto from Europe, my husband and I enjoyed a short one-night layover in New York City. Originally, we were to fly out of LaGuardia; however, upon learning that Newark’s new United Club Lounge had just opened at the end of May, I had our flight changed to depart out of Newark instead.

United Club Newark (Terminal C) – Access

The new United Club Lounge is located in Terminal C, close to Gate 123. Terminal C is United’s hub, so if you’re flying with WestJet or Air Canada, you will be flying out of Terminal A or B and you’ll need to find your way to Terminal C.  

Luckily, the terminals are well-connected. Once you’re airside, it is relatively easy to move from one terminal to the next by shuttle bus.

I was flying out with Air Canada, and had checked in at Terminal A. Once through security, make a sharp turn to the left, near where gate A28 is located, and you’ll find a door and signage directing you down a stairwell to the shuttle bus area.  

Shuttles between Terminals A and C run back and forth from 5am to 10pm, which happens to be the same hours that the lounge is open.   When I got to the shuttle area, a bus was already there waiting.

The ride to the next terminal took no longer than three minutes and dropped us off close to Gate C70.   From here, it took another five minute walk to Gate C123, where an escalator takes you up to the lounge.  

At the entrance, there are kiosks to scan your boarding pass to get you in. If you run into issues, there are agents at the desk to help.  

United Club lounges are accessible to United or Star Alliance business class passengers, as well as  Star Alliance Gold members. In my case, I used my Star Alliance Gold status as a result of being an Aeroplan 50K member to access the lounge, and I was also able to bring in a guest as a Star Alliance Gold member.

Note that if you’re flying United or Star Alliance business class on a long-haul international route departing from Newark, you’ll have access to the United Polaris Lounge as well, which has superior dining, bar, and wellness options and would be a better choice to visit than this United Club.

United Club Newark (Terminal C) – Seating

When you first enter the lounge, you’ll notice that it’s well-lit, large, spread-out and, clean. It has a modern look to it, with grey walls and floors, as well as black and wooden accents for furnishings.  

There are also accent walls around the lounge that feature a different colour and design, or are simply made of red brick. Splashes of colour are seen in the lounge’s various seating options and on decorative books and other items throughout.

The lounge offers over 480 seats set up in a variety of seating options and arrangements, most with outlets and USB ports nearby. The lounge is a busy one; however, because of its size, you shouldn’t have much difficult finding a space to sit. 

Long tables that can seat up to 10 guests are scattered throughout the lounge, with adequate lighting. They make for great workstations or just as a spot for a large family or group to gather.  

A few cubbies are also available for those who prefer a bit of privacy.  

All seats are padded. I tried a few and they’re quite comfortable. You’ll find options like couches, loveseats, and various types of chairs.

Most are arranged to seat groups of two or four, but there are some areas that will seat more.

Wherever there is seating, you’ll find a USB and power port nearby. They’ll be on walls, tables, or even on the underside of chairs.

If you want a change of scenery, head over to the other side of the lounge, where you’ll find floor-to-ceiling windows offering a view of the planes, gates, and runway.

Here, there are individual seats with footrests that are perfect for just lounging alone or with a friend, separated from you by a side table.

United Club Newark (Terminal C) – Dining

As soon as you enter the lounge, there is a “hydration” centre to the left. It’s perfect for travellers who just want to grab a quick snack or drink before hurrying off to their flight. 

The station has a variety of salty snack options, including Doritos, Sun Chips, Lays, pretzels, and popcorn chips.

There is also a hot beverage station, snack mix dispensary, and a few cold drink dispensers containing water with fresh lemon and lime slices or grapefruit juice. 

Continuing on, you’ll walk down main hallway of the lounge where the washrooms are located. At the end of the hallway, it opens up into the main dining area. 

Seating areas along the far wall has booths that can accommodate up six people. Otherwise, smaller tables are set apart to seat up to four people, with larger linear tables that can seat up to 10. 

There is a long buffet station with different food options spread along it. On one end, there are sandwiches and dessert.

On the other side, there’s a soup station and charcuterie board, a salad bar, and the main hot meal stations. During our visit, this consisted of a taco station with a choice of chicken or pork and a variety of toppings. 

The buffet station and dining area are well-staffed. Staff members constantly wiping down surfaces, cleaning up after guests, and picking up garbage, keeping the area spotless. 

Beverage stations are also located nearby, with hot beverage dispensers and Coke Freestyle machines.

United Club Newark (Terminal C) – Bar

On the other side of the dining area is the coffee and alcohol bar. Like the buffet station, it is long and well-staffed, with a few attendants. You can have a seat at the bar on a padded barstool or take your drink with you. 

The coffee bar is at the end of the station and staffed by a couple of baristas. Around the corner is the alcohol bar, which offers a great selection of complimentary drinks, including draught beer, wines, and spirits. 

Other options are available for purchase as well, like the various types of more premium liquor displayed on the shelf.

And while you’re enjoying your drink, you can catch your favourite sports game on one of the three TVs spread out along the bar.

United Club Newark (Terminal C) – Showers

The restrooms were clean, large, and spacious, which is befitting for a lounge this size. The decor matches that of the rest of the lounge, with black metal and wooden accents.

There is also an all-gender restroom, which shows that United is keeping up with the times.  

There are six showers for guests to use on a first-come, first-served basis. You have to show the attendant your boarding pass to use them.

The showers are situated in their own bathrooms and, once again, were spacious and clean.  

United Club Newark (Terminal C) – Other Facilities

Located centrally in the lounge is an assistance desk for guests with any issues on United-marketed flight.  

Although no boarding announcements are made, there are large screens displaying flight departure information dotted throughout the lounge.

For families travelling with babies or young toddlers, there is a wellness room for nursing and diaper changes.

Finally, for those who are in the mood for a little friendly competition at the airport, there is a single foosball table for guests to enjoy. 

I had a very enjoyable experience at the the all-new United Club Newark. From what I’ve been told by a United agent, it’s the best United Club you’ll find anywhere, and will serve as the standard for all future United Club lounges.

The lounge is a clean, bright, and spacious area with plenty of space to accommodate guests. It has a great bar and a decent variety of snack and food items.

The amenities are well-suited for any traveller, from business travellers to those taking a trip solo or with friends and family.

I didn’t have my kids with me this time, so I can’t get their opinion. As a family traveller, the only improvement I’d make is adding a play space or entertainment area for children. For now, the plethora of snack options should be enough to keep them occupied and happy.

8 Incredible Things To Do Charming Newark, Ohio

Situated in east-central Ohio, about 35 miles east of Columbus, you’ll find charming Newark. Located along the western edge of the Appalachian plateau in Licking County, Newark features various art forms. Performing arts? Check. Artistic yet functional glass? Check. Artisan beer? Check. Even their outdoor spaces offer something for art enthusiasts.

The closest airport is Port Columbus International Airport (CMH) in Columbus. Since Newark is 35 miles from the airport, you’ll want to rent a car to maximize your experiences with ease.

Here are eight things to do in Newark that you’ll want to include on your next visit.

Note: My visit to Newark was a hosted trip by Licking County, Ohio. The opinions are mine based on my experience.

1. Investigate The Works: Ohio Center For History, Art And Technology

The Works, named for the building’s original occupants Scheidler Machine Works, offers the works, everything from art to technology and manufacturing. History, art, and the science of technology are often thought of as disparate disciplines. The Works: Ohio Center for History, Art and Technology sits at the intersection of these fields and demonstrates that the areas are intertwined.

The learning through play activities in this center connect science concepts to real-world applications. The museum offers hands-on STEM activities for all ages; one example is the SciDome planetarium with a 30-foot, 4K projection.

The Works isn’t just for children, and many spaces are adult-centric. The art gallery on the main floor has free admittance. The hottest area in the entire center is the glassblowing demonstrations offered throughout the day. With pre-registration, you can make your own hot glass, or if you’re more of a shopper, hand-blown glass pieces are available for purchase. If you like to purchase ornaments for your Christmas tree from your travels, this is a place you’ll want to shop.

Pro Tip: While this center had me captivated, even your smallest grandchild will find activities to suit their age.

2. Explore The Newark Earthworks

Constructed between 100 B.C. and 500 A.D, the Newark Earthworks was part cemetery, part temple, and part astronomical observatory. Built by the Hopewell culture, it’s the world’s most extensive geometric earthworks.

The Octagon Earthworks comprises a circular earthen enclosure that connects to an octagonal space by a short section of parallel walls. One area of the Newark Earthworks includes the Octagon Earthworks. The circle consists of about 20 acres and the octagon about 50 acres.

About 1,200 feet from crest to crest, the circular hill of earth ranges in height from 4 to 14 feet. Built for use as a ceremonial center, at the center of the enclosed space, the Eagle Mound, visitors can view the entire perimeter of the Great Circle. Exploring the site takes about an hour, which also features the Great Circle Museum.

Pro Tip: The site offers guided tours from July through October.

3. Walk Around Dawes Arboretum

Dawes Arboretum , an outdoor museum for trees, provides a year-round multi-sensory experience on almost 2,000 acres. Those who enjoy hiking will appreciate the 12 miles of trails. The Auto Tour is a good starting point for getting an overview of the property, making the arboretum an enjoyable experience for those who choose not to get out and hike. They offer guided audio accompaniments for both the north and south Auto Tours on their website.

Climb the Observation Tower for a bird’s-eye view of the Dawes Arboretum Hedge letters. Conifer Glen is an evergreen area that stands out in winter when other trees are bare. Explore the Japanese Garden for a bit of peace and tranquility.

The East Trails are suited for more adventurous travelers. The trails in this part of the park have seasonally muddy, wet areas and uneven terrain, rating them moderately tricky.

While we visited, the Lyman Whitaker Wind Sculptures were on exhibit. The art installations periodically change but are always a charming addition to the arboretum.

4. Visit The National Heisey Glass Museum

Newark, Ohio, had the key ingredients that Heisey Glass required. They had excellent silica sand, plenty of natural gas, and a labor force. Heisey’s glass designs and color found their way around the world, including into the hands of celebrities and their movies. Heisey Glass Factory operated from 1896 to 1957, but its history and art live today in the National Heisey Glass Museum . We found the video on Heisey Glass’s past to understand the factory’s importance and hand-made glass in the town’s history.

You’ll want to spend about 2 hours at the museum that includes three buildings and three floors. Displays include not only the art of the glassware but also the business’ manufacturing.

Pro Tip: Film buffs will enjoy the Heisey in Hollywood display, where they’ll learn which actors used Heisey glass in their movies.

5. Catch A Performance At The Midland Theatre

Built in 1928, The Midland Theatre had fallen into disrepair and is now beautifully restored to its former grandeur. Many theaters from that era are gone, so I applaud Newark for having the foresight to save this theater. The Midland Theatre is a 1,800-seat theatre in the Newark Downtown Historic District.

The theater opened with a silent movie and two vaudeville acts but quickly moved to “talking pictures.” Over the next 50 years, they played all the great films from Hollywood’s golden years, everything from Gone with the Wind to Dr. Zhivago. Beginning in 1978, for 14 years, the theater sat unused. In 1992, David Longenburger started an 8-year, $8.5 million renovation that made the theater better than ever. Since 2000, the venue has been a performance venue for live music and other performing arts events.

Pro Tip: If you’d like a Midland Theatre tour, call the Midland Theatre Box Office to coordinate a time.

6. Experience The Cherry Valley Hotel

When you check into the Cherry Valley Hotel , you can stay the entire weekend and never leave the property. Indoors welcoming fireplaces abound, with one having been converted to wood-burning so that you’ll enjoy that aroma of burning wood. Outdoor firepits allow you to enjoy s’mores.

Situated on 16 acres, the outdoor space on the property is unique, with lush gardens that are part of the National Garden Association. Cherry Valley Hotel is the only hotel in the United States with its own certified arboretum. Each room has a furnished outdoor space to enjoy the outdoors while waking up with the morning cup of coffee. The courtyard rooms offer views of the pond and gazebo.

You’ll find an indoor pool and jacuzzi with sliding glass doors that open one wall to the outside, which gives you the best of indoors and outdoors in the summer.

The hotel offers three dining options, the Lobby Bar that features live entertainment on the weekends, the O and E Taphouse offering pub food and bar snacks, and a fine-dining experience at the Craftsman Kitchen and Terrace Restaurant. The restaurant provides patio seating, weather permitting.

Pro Tip: If you’re into biking, the staff will store your bikes so that they don’t occupy space in your room.

7. Enjoy A Meal At Red Oak Pub And Restaurant

Continue the art theme with the black and white murals of local venues on Red Oak Pub and Restaurant’s walls. The locally owned, family-friendly restaurant is a great place to stop in for a burger and a beer. When a place serves 1,000 burgers a week, you know it must be good. Their meat is a custom blend of Ohio-raised, grass-fed beef, combining T-Bone, ribeye, and sirloin ground at a local butcher shop and mixed to juicy perfection. The burger covers the entire bun, so you have meat in every bite. Their burgers are also chargrilled rather than cooked on a flat top, which provides added flavor. While you can order a standard burger, they’ve had fun with the burgers, and you also have a choice from unusual treats like the Bologna Burger or the Peanut Butter Bacon Burger.

Pro Tip: Make a reservation; since Red Oak is popular with local diners, it prevents waiting.

8. Taste Some Craft Beer At Trek Brewing

We enjoyed Trek Brewing’s most popular beer, Canteen, so much at the O and E Taproom in the Cherry Valley Hotel, we had to go over and check out the brewery. Canteen, named for the vital part of any trek, is a crisp and refreshing cream ale. It’s light in color and body. Canteen is brewed traditionally with malted barley and corn balanced with Nugget hops. Trek Brewing brews all beer styles, so you’re sure to find something you like.

John and Kristin Ream created Trek Brewing as a hangout brewery, the third place to gather and meet with family and friends after home and work. They welcome the whole family and have designed a play area with chalkboard walls and toys that will occupy the grandkids while the adults chat over a craft beer or two.

Pro Tip: With over 9,000 square feet of patio space, it’s the perfect venue for social distancing.

Amtrak services between NYC, DC, Philadelphia return to normal after severe disruption

Amtrak service between New York, Washington D.C. and Philadelphia has resumed to normal after downed overhead powerlines between Newark, New Jersey and New York's Penn Station disrupted train services between Wednesday evening and Thursday afternoon, an Amtrak spokesperson said.

"Full scheduled service resumed earlier this morning," Jason Abrams, an Amtrak spokesperson said in an email to USA TODAY Thursday afternoon.

Amtrak and NJ Transit services were impacted shortly after 5 p.m. Wednesday due to downed wires just outside of Newark near Kearny, the location of the Portal Bridge and the construction of its replacement, NorthJersey.com, part of the USA TODAY Network reported . However, the wire issues had nothing to do with the bridge or the construction, Amtrak said.

"A signal wire came into contact with the catenary, causing a blowout," Abrams told USA TODAY. "The signal line from the catenary wire fell to the ground."

An investigation into how the two wires came into contact is ongoing, Abrams said.

New Jersey: Woman looks to sue after casino refuses to pay disputed $1.27 million slot machine prize

The power issue caused multiple Amtrak trains between New York, Philadelphia and Washington D.C. to be suspended Wednesday and while services resumed early Thursday, travelers were warned to "expect extensive residual delays due to speed restrictions and rail congestion." Trains were delayed up to two hours Thursday, according to Amtrak alerts.

"Customers with reservations on trains that are being modified will typically be accommodated on trains with similar departure times or another day," Amtrak had said in its advisory.

Amtrak said it was waiving fees for changing reservations on affected lines and customers should reach out to contact its reservation center at 1-800-USA-RAIL.

NJ Transit also affected

The wire mishap also affected NJ Transit that connects Manhattan with multiple cities in New Jersey.

The commuter service, in an update shortly after 1:30 p.m. Thursday, alerted passengers to expect up to 30-minute delays on multiple routes due to Amtrak's overhead wire issues .

NJ Transit also requested customers to refer to their travel advisory while making plans.
