Dalian’s got this unique vibe thanks to its history with Russia and Japan. You’ll see it in the architecture and taste it in the food. Russian Street feels like you’ve stepped into a European postcard, while Japanese Street offers up some seriously authentic eats. It’s like a cultural mash-up that Dalian rocks with pride.

Feast Your Eyes (And Stomach)

Speaking of food, if you’re into seafood, welcome to paradise. Fresh sashimi, grilled squid, and so much more sea goodness await you here. But hey, even if seafood isn’t your jam, Dalian’s culinary scene is diverse. There’s something delicious around every corner, from street food to fine dining.

Dalian City Guide: A Brief History Of Dalian, China

Ever wonder how Dalian went from a quiet fishing spot to the buzzing, vibrant city it is today? It’s quite the tale, filled with twists, turns, and a whole lot of character. Let’s dive into the history of Dalian and uncover the layers that make this city so fascinating.

A Humble Beginning

Back in the day—way back—Dalian was pretty much off the radar, a sleepy fishing village doing its thing. Fast forward a bit, and the Qing Dynasty starts to see its strategic port potential. But Dalian’s sleepy days were about to end, as bigger players eyed this coastal gem.

The Russian and Japanese Chapters

Enter the Russians. They lease Dalian from China in the late 19th century, and boom—infrastructure, railways, and that distinct European flair start to shape the city. But hold up, the plot thickens. The Japanese take over in the early 20th century, leaving their own mark with new buildings and development projects. Dalian’s like a historical ping-pong ball, bouncing between influences but soaking up all the culture.

A Modern Metamorphosis

Post-World War II, Dalian flips the script again. It’s back in Chinese hands, and the transformation doesn’t slow down. The city blossoms into a major shipping and logistics hub, its economy booming and its skyline reaching for the stars. Dalian isn’t just back; it’s making waves as a key player on the international stage.

Dalian Today: A Cultural Hotspot

Now, Dalian is this amazing mix of its past and present. You can stroll through Russian-style squares, check out Japanese architecture, and still catch that quintessential Chinese vibe. It’s a city that wears its history with pride, all while strutting into the future with tech parks, fashion festivals, and an ever-growing list of must-visit spots.

Dalian Top Attractions and Best Places to Visit in China

Dalian, despite its young history (it was only founded in 1899), it enjoys considerable popularity with domestic tourists for its beaches and for being a past possession of Russia and Japan . Its museums explore its culture and its role in two significant wars, its beaches host scores of sunbathers, and its cherry farms will put a (red-toothed) smile on your face.

While Dalian is home to plenty of fun and interesting attractions, start your visit on a sombre note by paying your respects to past prisoners of war at the Japan-Russia Prison Site of Port Arthur . Built by Russia in 1902 to house detainees during the Japan-Russia War, it later came into the possession of the Japanese, who expanded the facility and used it for the same purpose during the Second World War.

The implements of torture found within will shock and horrify you, as will the hanging room where prisoners were executed. Other aspects of this facility include the dining hall and tiny cells which held upwards of eight inmates at any given time.

Fascinating Attractions

Brush up on the culture produced in the Dalian area by spending time exploring the Lushun Museum . Opened in 1917, it contains 30,000 relics from as far back as the Han Dynasty (3rd century BC), including the fascinating Xinjiang mummy exhibit.

Apart from this, its pottery, Buddhist artwork, paintings, and calligraphy will hold your interest throughout the duration of your visit here. Don’t miss the double dragon basin, as this bronze treasure will dazzle even the most jaded of travellers.

When life in the city starts to get to you as it often does in China , follow the locals up to the Grand Black Mountain of Dalian . Perched high above the hustle and bustle of this urban area, the greenery and fresh air will be just what the doctor ordered.

The vistas and the hikes available up here is worth the trip alone, but locally, this place is known for its cherries. Home to several U-Pick farms, you can pay 30 RMB to pick as many of this juicy fruit as you can take home with you, so take advantage if you are living and working in the area.

More Attractions

Combine all this with a number of peaceful temples , and you have a local gem you won’t want to miss.

Want to cool off on a hot day in Dalian? Spend an entire afternoon sitting by the sea within the Jinshitan Scenic Area . Situated 50 kilometres from the heart of the city, the ocean is cleaner than you would expect, and the beach, while not sandy, is made of fine pebbles which are easier to walk upon than you think.

If you have no interest in going into the water, there are numerous interesting rock formations to look at, and an outstanding golf course which pairs well with the seaside scenery it is built alongside.

Other Cultural Attractions: Trip to Dalian, China

Travelling as a family in Northeastern China? Make time in your schedule to check out the Dalian Forest Zoo . A sizable facility spanning 7.2 square kilometres, there are six separate sections housing over 1,000 animals representing 130 species, giving you and your children a chance to check out a wide variety of our four-legged friends from around the world.

Don’t miss the chance to ride a cable car to the top of West Hill, where you can get a dramatic view over the zoo from above.

Still looking for things to do with your kids while in Dalian? Take them to Pole Aquarium . Situated at Tiger Beach Park, you will find animals like dolphins, penguins, and polar bears within its bounds. The highlight is certainly the dolphin show, as these intelligent creatures interact with their trainers in a way few other animals do, so don’t miss it.

Outside, don’t forget to scope out the massive Six Tiger Sculpture, and grab a bite to eat at one of many food vendors who park in the plaza opposite this artwork.

Other Attractions

After a long day exploring the city core of Dalian, unwind from its inherent busyness by spending some downtime in Xinghai Square . You’ll have plenty of room to unwind, as it is the largest public square in the world at 1.1 square metres – that’s about four times the size of Tiananmen Square in Beijing.

Shaped like a star, it contains a series of bronze sculptures, as well as a stone pillar known as the Nine Dragons Sculpture. Those things don’t interest you much? No problem – it is flanked by an amusement park, water park, and a Shell Museum which contains specimens from around the globe.

Want to check out the beauty of the coast in the Dalian area? Rent a car and set out along the Binhai Road . Initially built in the 1970s for military use, it was re-purposed in the 1980s as a tourist route at the urging of the president after visiting it.

Along its 32 kilometres, the rocky coast, mountains, beaches, and flowering trees (in spring) will cause you to stop multiple times along the way, so don’t think this will be a quick trip despite its short overall length.

China launches 10th Type 055 Vessel, Increases Production At Dagushan

Dalian shipbuilding has launched a new type 055 large destroyer and is ramping up production at its second facility..

Alex Luck 28 May 2024

Chinese naval builder Dalian Shipbuilding has launched a new Type 055 “large destroyer”, the tenth overall, and commenced construction on a further hull. According to new commercial satellite imagery the builder has also laid down another Type 052D destroyer, the sixth of the latest batch at the yard. Beam figures for the new modules of 18 and 20 metres respectively suggest an effort of parallel construction in a single drydock.

Dalian is one of two principal naval yards together with Jiangnan in Shanghai constructing all recent guided missile destroyers for the PLAN. This most recent construction of new combatants for Dalian is taking place at a secondary yard typically referred to as Dagushan.

dalian tour

The Dagushan-based yard is located to the East across Dalian Bay from the builder’s primary facilities previously performing all DDG-construction. This development may indicate that Dalian Shipbuilding is trying to offload more naval output from their primary facilities in order to free up larger drydocks for commercial construction. Interestingly Dagushan first assembled this new Type 055 on a slipway, similar to Jiangnan. However the yard then used a barge to move the hull into a drydock for further work in late March.

dalian tour

Most recently Dalian Shipbuilding has launched five Type 052D destroyers all assembled in a single large drydock. In addition the yard also performed modernization work on Liaoning (16), the first Chinese aircraft carrier rebuilt at the yard, until mid-April.

About Type 055 construction

dalian tour

Dalian’s new Type 055 is now berthed at Dalian’s primary facilities previously used for Liaoning’s modernization. The ship is the second recently launched hull, with Jiangnan having launched the first ship in late 2023. Due to size and capabilities of the Type 055 US officials refer to the ship as a missile cruiser.

The Type 055 displaces approximately 13,000 tons at full load, at a length of 180 metres and a beam of 20 metres. It features 112 cells of a “universal VLS” housing the HQ-9 long range SAM and the YJ-18 AShM. In addition official footage revealed in April 2022 suggests the type is also capable of using a reportedly hypersonic antiship missile referred to as YJ-21 . American official reports over years past repeatedly asserted that the Type 055 may be able to field an antiship ballistic missile (AShBM) in the near future.

Production figures for Type 055 so far consist of a first batch of eight hulls. Both Jiangnan and Dalian Shipbuilding have produced four hulls each . The first batch-Type 055 as of 2024 have all entered service with PLAN . These most modern PLAN combatants are currently active with the South and North Sea Fleets.

Both yards now appear to be working on their respective second hulls of the second batch. The final figure of second batch-destroyers remains speculative, as the PLA does not officially comment on intended build rates. Other yards such as Hudong-Zhonghua in Shanghai and Huangpu-Wenchong in Guangzhou are notionally capable of building DDGs as well. However both yards instead appear to focus on construction of frigates such as Type 054A and Type 054B. HZ is also the primary builder of amphibious assault ships for PLAN.

Type 052D-construction ongoing

dalian tour

In a related development Dalian Shipbuilding has also laid down yet another Type 052D. The new modules now visible are the first ones for Dagushan. The event confirms that the most numerous DDG-design for PLAN remains in production at both yards. The Type 052D DDG displaces between 7,000 and 7,500 tons depending on variant. So far 25 ships are in active service with PLAN. The destroyer is the culmination of the preceding 052B and 052C-design lineage. It features 64 cells of the U-VLS design similar to Type 055 in combination with the Type 346A large fixed panel AESA-type radar. As mentioned Dalian has already launched another five hulls of the most recent batch. Figures for Jiangnan are somewhat more difficult to establish. According to imagery the yard has launched at least two new 052D so far, with more modules in assembly.

Combined with ongoing construction of frigates and related adaptions for the Coast Guard at both HZ and HW plus Jiangnan’s output Dalian Shipbuilding’s current construction illustrate the continuous and steady output of new combatants for PLAN across all four major naval builders.

China Launches 10th Type 055 Destroyer

China continues to expand its naval fleet with the launch of a new type 055 destroyer by dalian shipbuilding , one of the country’s main shipyards. this is the tenth ship of this type to be built, and the production took place at a secondary facility in dagushan , evidencing an ongoing effort to accelerate naval production., + see the video about the type 055 destroyer.

The video released by the press office of the brigade shows the launch of the destroyer, which joined another Type 052D at the shipyard, marking the sixth ship of this latest batch. The dimensions of the new modules, with widths of 18 and 20 meters, indicate parallel construction in a single dry dock, a strategy to optimize production.

Located east in Dalian Bay, the Dagushan facility operates separately from the main facilities of Dalian Shipbuilding , which previously dealt exclusively with the construction of guided missile destroyers ( DDG ). This separation may be a strategic move to relieve the load from the main facilities and allow larger dock spaces to be used for commercial constructions.

Interestingly, the Dagushan shipyard adopted a technique similar to that used by Jiangnan, using a ramp for the initial assembly of the Type 055, and a barge to transfer the hull to the dry dock for subsequent finishing in March.

Recently, five Type 052D destroyers were launched from a single large dry dock in Dalian. The shipyard is also conducting a modernization program for the Liaoning (16), the first Chinese aircraft carrier, which was upgraded until mid-April at the same facilities.

The Type 055, displacing about 13,000 tons and measuring 180 meters in length and 20 meters in width, is armed with a universal vertical launch system that accommodates long-range HQ-9 missiles and AShM YJ-18. Images from 2022 indicate the destroyer’s capability to operate with the YJ-21, a supposedly hypersonic anti-ship missile. U.S. reports suggest that the Type 055 may soon be able to launch anti-ship ballistic missiles.

To date, the production of the Type 055 includes a first batch of eight hulls, with Jiangnan and Dalian producing four each. With the introduction of the second batch already underway, the exact number of destroyers planned remains uncertain, given the PLA’s policy of secrecy. Other shipyards, such as Hudong-Zhonghua and Huangpu-Wenchong in Shanghai and Guangzhou, respectively, are focused on constructing frigates, while HZ leads the production of amphibious assault ships for the PLAN.

  • 'Decoding Zhonghua' International Conference on Northeast Asian Studies held in Dalian

(ECNS) -- The "Decoding Zhonghua" International Conference on Northeast Asian Studies was held in Dalian, Northeast China’s Liaoning Province on Saturday.

Experts at the conference elaborated on the distinctive characteristics of Chinese civilization and the development path of the community for the Chinese nation. They also discussed the current state of Northeast Asian regional cooperation and future pathways for collaboration.

Professor Lv Chao from Liaoning University maintained that facing global changes, all countries should adopt a pragmatic approach to cooperation based on mutual benefit, eliminate external interference, and strengthen cooperation in various fields such as cultural and economic exchanges.

Professor Zhang Jingquan from Shandong University said that innovative approaches should be taken to promote maritime regional cooperation in Northeast Asia. He proposes several pathways for this, including creating a Northeast Asian Super Bay Area to advance land-sea integrated regional cooperation, using new productive forces to drive a digital and intelligent ocean for regional cooperation, and promoting high-quality development through deep-sea governance.

Professor Jin Jun from the University of East Asia in Japan proposed that the Chinese understanding of peace has always been founded on an order based on morality, justice, and harmony.

Themed "Future-oriented Regional Cooperation in Northeast Asia," the conference featured two sub-forums.

At the sub-forum on “High-quality development, cultural exchanges and cooperation in Northeast Asia," experts explored the current state of cultural exchanges, economic interactions, and cooperation mechanisms among Northeast Asian countries.

They proposed that countries need to enhance multilateral exchanges, improve cooperation mechanisms, achieve mutual learning about civilizations through cooperation, consolidate value consensus, and promote a community with a shared future for mankind.

At the sub-forum on "Exchanges and interaction among ethnic groups in Northeast China and their integration into the Chinese nation," experts focused on the historical evidence of exchanges, and integration among various ethnic groups in Northeast China.

They traced the historical origins of the concept of "the Chinese nation as one family" and concluded that the mutual respect and cultural recognition among the ethnic groups in Northeast China throughout history have collectively developed Chinese culture.

The conference was hosted by China Ethnic News and Dalian Minzu University, and co-sponsored by the Center for Asia and Pacific China International Communications Group.
