About Wicked on Broadway

Video & photos.

Wicked , the Broadway sensation, looks at what happened in the Land of Oz…but from a different angle. Long before Dorothy arrives, there is another girl, born with emerald-green skin—smart, fiery, misunderstood, and possessing an extraordinary talent. When she meets a bubbly blonde who is exceptionally popular, their initial rivalry turns into the unlikeliest of friendships…until the world decides to call one “good,” and the other one “wicked.”

Know Before You Go

Visually stunning, Wicked boasts a soaring score from Stephen Schwartz ( Godspell , Pippin ) that includes the hits “Defying Gravity,” “Popular” and “For Good, Tony Award-winning sets and costumes and some of the most gravity-defying moments on the Great White Way.  Wicked has been hailed by The New York Times as “the defining musical of the decade.”

"There are flying monkeys, flying witches and flying scenery, but the musical itself truly soars when one of its marvelously talented leading ladies...unleashes the kind of vocal magic that needs no supernatural or even technical assistance." Variety Charles Isherwood

Frequently Asked Questions

Like The Wizard of Oz, Wicked is the definition of family-friendly. But like the classic 1939 movie, younger children may find it too long or be frightened by the show's flying monkeys, allusions to offstage violence and death of a character. Most children over eight, however, will be delighted by the world of Wicked .

There is no specific dress code at the theatre. For all performances, attire should be comfortable and appropriate for the occasion. Please remember the theatre is air conditioned during the summer months; sweaters are recommended.

The Gershwin Theatre offers soft drinks, water, cocktails and candy 45 minutes before the show and during intermission. Bars are located on the front orchestra and mezzanine levels. Visit the bar before the show to pre-order your intermission drinks! Please note that no food or drinks are allowed into the theater and must be consumed in the lobbies.

Devices are available free-of-charge on the second level of the Gershwin theater, as well as hand-held captioning devices for the deaf and audio descriptions devices for the blind.

Audien™ Translation System devices are available for $10 on the second level of the theatre – currently offered in Japanese, German, Portuguese, Spanish, French, Mandarin and Korean. You can rent a headset and get a running synopsis of the show in any of these seven languages.

The seating procedure for latecomers varies by seat section. Generally speaking, late patrons who are seated in the orchestra may be held in the lobby until approximately twenty minutes after the performance begins. They are then escorted directly to their seats by an usher.

The George Gershwin Theatre

Majestic shows in a majestic house.

The Uris opened in 1972 with Via Galactica, a space musical featuring Raul Julia. It was an unpromising beginning for the theatre, closing after only seven performances and losing over one million dollars. Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler’s thrilling hit production of Sweeney Todd, with Angela Lansbury and Len Cariou, also played at the theatre in the 1970s. In 1979, the show won eight coveted Tony Awards. Also earlier in the ‘70s, the Houston Grand Opera staged its stimulating revival of Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess, and the musical won a Tony Award for Best Revival. Scott Joplin’s Treemonisha, another Houston Grand Opera production, opened at the theatre and proved to be the most innovative show of the season.

On June 5, 1983, during the Tony Awards program, the venue was renamed the Gershwin. Comden and Green adapted their original MGM film, Singin’ in the Rain, for the stage in 1985. This production was acclaimed for featuring a real rain effect on stage. In 1987, trained skaters skyrocketed into the theatre onto a brilliant set designed by John Napier for Andrew Lloyd Webber and Richard Stilgoe’s Starlight Express. In 1990, the extravagant Meet Me In St. Louis arrived at the Gershwin.

A Contemporary Design

Ralph Alswang designed the Gershwin Theatre in a sumptuous Art Nouveau style. He designed it to signify his whole idea for what a contemporary musical and comedy theatre should be: complete with excellent sight lines, top-notch acoustics, and plentiful seating. The theatre is located at the front of a large office facility that was constructed on the former location of the Capitol Theatre. With a massive seating capacity of 1,900, the auditorium is located on the second floor which can be reached via escalators. Since most patrons desire orchestra seating, there are more seats downstairs and fewer in a small balcony along with protruding side sections instead of box seats. Dark proscenium panels function as light towers, which are removable. The stage floor is flexible and can be taken apart or extended into a thrust stage. The Gershwin utilized the first water curtain in theatre history, which is used in case of a fire on stage. The Gershwin also houses the Broadway Theater Hall of Fame, which is located in a special oval room in the lobby.

Twenty Years of Legends

The Gershwin Theatre has staged outstanding performances for over fifty years, including Oklahoma!, Wicked, and Fiddler on the Roof, in which Topol played Tevye. That production won the Tony Award for Best Revival. It has successfully housed many dance companies and concerts by numerous luminaries, including Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, Count Basie and Ella Fitzgerald.

‘Wicked’ Movie Gets Extended Preview At NBCUniversal Upfront In A Novel Promo Move

By Dade Hayes , Peter White

Wicked

In an unusual move, NBCUniversal used its upfront presentation to ad buyers in New York on Monday to debut a four-minute extended first look at its forthcoming film version of Wicked .

Last month, Universal heavily promoted the adaptation of the Broadway musical during CinemaCon, including the release of footage and appearances by cast members. That audience was theater owners and film fans, a segment that is distinct from Monday’s Madison Avenue crowd. The trailer played at the upfront was longer and included additional scenes.

Donna Langley , Chairman, NBCUniversal Studio Group and Chief Content Officer, introduced the footage during her first appearance at the Upfronts since taking on an expanded role that now covers television. She urged attendees to show “respect” for the filmmaking team and refrain from recording, with security at the event hall going row by row and asking laptops and devices to be stowed.

Instead of the customary series fare, Langley centered her remarks on a feature film, a logical strategic move given Peacock’s positioning of Universal films in the pay-1 release window. The service, which She said her job was “identifying strategies across the entire company on every platform”. She added that she wanted to produce projects that have a “massive cultural impact” and “take big swings”.

Peacock, which has 34 million subscribers, has increasingly highlighted movies, with the Oscar-winning Oppenheimer driving significant viewing in its debut on the service earlier this year. Day-and-date releases like Five Nights at Freddy’s have also helped lure subscribers, execs have said.

While NBCU broke ground with the film reveal, it is likely to be far from the only upfront presenter to showcase its movie capabilities. Especially with Amazon and Netflix now in the mix, film will be looking to elbow its way into the TV conversation. Warner Bros. Discovery ad sales chief Jon Steinlauf told Deadline in a recent interview that the company will be emphasizing the value of movies as part of its “IP upfront.”

Morning Briefing: Europe Edition

Wednesday briefing.

Michael Cohen’s second day on the witness stand.

Natasha Frost

By Natasha Frost

Michael Cohen, in a dark suit with a light blue tie and a white shirt, walks out of a building.

Michael Cohen described a hush-money deal

Michael Cohen, Donald Trump’s former fixer, returned to the stand yesterday to face lawyers for the Manhattan district attorney’s office, as well as Donald Trump’s legal team, in the case against the former president.

Cohen told jurors that he received monthly checks — most bearing the former president’s signature — that purported to be part of a legal “retainer” agreement, but that were in fact reimbursements for hush money he had paid to the porn star Stormy Daniels, who alleges that she had a sexual relationship with Trump. Cohen’s testimony was the first and only personal account tying Trump to the documents at the crux of his case.

In a barrage of questions, Trump’s attorneys sought to portray Cohen as an opportunist. Trump’s lead lawyer, Todd Blanche, pressed Cohen about his social media posts, his efforts to monetize his feud with the former president, his own criminal history and his desire to see Trump behind bars.

Analysis: The defense seemed to be trying to portray Cohen as, “essentially, Trump’s stalker,” my colleague Maggie Haberman wrote — a man once obsessed with the former president who was now equally obsessed with getting revenge.

What’s next: Trump’s lawyers indicated that they could call an expert witness and that they had not decided if they would call Trump himself.

Other details: In a blow to Trump, an appeals court upheld the judge’s gag order .

Russia widened its purge of the Defense Ministry

Russian security agents detained Lt. Gen. Yuri Kuznetsov , a senior general, early yesterday on an accusation of “large-scale” bribery, according to Russia’s Investigative Committee, a federal law enforcement agency. His detention came days after Vladimir Putin, the Russian president, unexpectedly replaced his long-serving defense minister, Sergei Shoigu.

Prosecutors said that General Kuznetsov received a bribe from “commercial interests” between 2021 and 2023, when he was working on the protection of state secrets. The prosecutors claimed that security agents discovered cash equivalent to $1 million and luxury items during a search of his home.

Global diplomacy: Antony Blinken, the U.S. secretary of state, made a surprise visit to Kyiv yesterday to meet with President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine. President Vladimir Putin of Russia is expected to go to China later this week to visit Xi Jinping, China’s leader.

Ukraine: Last month, Russian soldiers suddenly showed up in the small town of Ocheretyne. It was clear that something had gone wrong .

U.N. adjusted its death toll in Gaza

The U.N. has begun citing a much lower death toll for women and children in Gaza, acknowledging that it has incomplete information about the casualties during Israel’s war on the territory.

The organization now cites 4,959 women and 7,797 children killed, down from at least 9,500 women and 14,500 children earlier this month. While the total number of casualties — roughly 35,000 — remained broadly the same, a U.N. official said that the organization was awaiting more identifying information for about 10,000 of the dead, so they were not included in the new breakdown.

Background: The change came because the U.N. switched to citing a more conservative source for its numbers. The change has added fuel to a debate over the credibility of those figures, though many international officials and experts say that the numbers are generally reliable.

Gaza: Israeli military leaders have grown increasingly frustrated with the lack of a plan for governing the territory after the war.

ARTS AND IDEAS

The fight over new york city’s streets.

New York City’s streets have always bustled, but lately they’re almost dangerously unlivable .

Residents clash over traffic, parking and heaps of trash. Cars and taxis vie for space, as buses swerve to avoid trucks parked in bike lanes. E-bikes are everywhere. Far fewer pedestrians get killed by motorists these days, but last year was the deadliest for cyclists since 1999.

“All of this stuff is trying to fit into a grid that was designed in 1811,” my colleague Dodai Stewart explains in a video . Relief may be on the way: The city is about to enact the nation’s first congestion pricing plan, which would charge most drivers $15 to enter much of Manhattan below 60th Street.

Student Film Focuses On Teen Suicide

Film major and vandal swimmer maddie timm’s film premiered at the kino film festival.

Her friend committed suicide in high school.

The tragedy was a painful low point that followed Maddie Timm like her own reflection in a pane of glass.

Before she took her life, the friend had meant – many times – to attend a high school swim meet in which Timm competed. It was just one thing left undone.

When Timm enrolled at U of I, she joined the Vandal swim team and knew what her major would be. She would study film  in the Journalism and Mass Media  department and address suicide in one of her movies.

Timm’s film, “One Less Lonely Ghost,” which she completed as part of her capstone project, tells the story of the relationship between two friends, one living and the other a ghost who lost their battle with mental illness. It premiered at the Kino International Short Film Festival at Moscow’s Kenworthy Theater in April 2024.

“I wanted to show that the people who go through these struggles, they can choose to stay,” Timm said. “I wanted to make a film to promote awareness and to help others recognize the signs and be present for people who may be facing decisions that can lead to suicide.”

Timm’s friend — the film character’s name is Lively — took her life in 2019. Her death was followed by the suicide of another teen acquaintance.

“It really shook our small community,” said Timm, who grew up in Mesa, Arizona. “We had not gone through anything like that before.”

The suicides in her town came on the heels of a TV made-for- television series depicting a range of social issues affecting teenagers. It told the story of a young woman who commits suicide and leaves behind a box of cassette tapes on which she has recorded the reasons she chose to kill herself.

Every day I am around these creative people and in this great small community and wonderful learning environment. It really is more than I ever expected. — Maddie Timm. Senior. Film.

Timm’s film takes a different tack.

“The message of the Netflix series was so wrong,” Timm said. “People ended up losing their life from it. I wanted to turn the tables. My story ends on a happier note.”

Timm who grew up with competitive parents — her dad played basketball in college and was a reliable participant in Spokane’s annual Hoopfest, and her mom was a college track and field athlete — started swimming at 5 years old.

“I spent every day in the pool before and after school,” Timm said.

She became a high school standout and knew she would swim at the collegiate level.

Her other dream was to be a screenwriter and film maker.

“I was just passionate about it. I knew it was something I wanted to do,” she said.

Woman stands in film studio looking through a film camera.

After the suicides in her hometown, and to address the Netflix series, she also knew what her first film would be about.

“I took from those two stories,” she said. “I realized that film was how I could reach people, so the ultimate goal became to help people, to get people to form relationships and know that they are not going through these trials alone.”

The film, which includes a U of I actor and Lionel Hampton School of Music score, was filmed around the Palouse and is being pitched to other film festivals across the country.

“We had so much great input and so much help putting this together,” she said. “I think it’s impactful. I hope it helps people. That’s the ultimate goal.”

When she pitched the story as a capstone, JAMM peers and mentors jumped on board.

“She had an impactful story to tell about suicide and mental health,” Professor Russell Meuff, director of the film and television program, said. “She was passionate and presented a clear artistic vision for her project. And she was confident in her ability to execute her plan. We love when our students can tell stories that are engaging but that also help foster conversations about important issues in our world.”

Timm’s decision to accept a swim scholarship after applying at U of I was an easy one, she said.

“I searched for universities with swim teams and film departments,” she said. “There weren’t many.”

Spokane, where her mother’s parents lived and where her dad played in Hoopfest, wasn’t far from Moscow. She had visited there a lot and its nearness gave her a sense of familiarity. When she was offered a place on the Vandal swim team, she accepted.

While at U of I, Timm got the opportunity to work on the production team for U of I athletics in addition to honing her own filmmaking, photography and screenwriting skills at JAMM . The journalism and mass media faculty helped her secure a grant as well as equipment to shoot her capstone project.

“I am so thankful I came to U of I,” Timm said. “Every day I am around these creative people and in this great small community and wonderful learning environment. It really is more than I ever expected.”

Timm is in close contact with the family of the friend who took her life, she said. She has kept them — including her friend’s three younger siblings — up to date on the film’s production and speaks regularly with her friend’s mother.

After the death, the friend’s mom apologized to Timm for not attending a swim meet with her daughter.

“I am so sorry for you,” the mother told Timm. “My daughter and I always wanted to attend a swim meet, but now she will not have the chance to watch you.”

The apology was heart rending, Timm said.

“It broke me,” Timm said. “I think learning from people who lost loved ones is really impactful. It really impressed upon me that I needed to do something for these families who have suffered like this.”
