Night temperatures cool in Italy in October, ranging between 48°F (9°C) and 57°F (14°C). How much rain you’ll see depends on the region you visit. Still, any showers are generally gentle and not long enough to deter you from venturing out.

Northern Italy is typically slightly wetter, but don’t let the rain deter you. Thanks to the shoulder season bringing fewer crowds than the summer months, October is still a fantastic time to visit. • Florence weather in October – During this month, Florence enjoys mild autumn weather. Temperatures average at 66°F (18.8°C) during the day and drop to 50°F (10°C) at night. The city receives around eight rainy days during October, leaving plenty of sunny days to enjoy outdoor activities.
• Venice weather in October – Travelers can expect cooler temperatures in this Northern Italy city, as well as some rainfall. Daytime highs usually reach around 61°F ( 16°C), while nights are a little chilly at about 48°F ( 9°C). Despite the average of eight rainy days during October, it’s a great time to see Venice with fewer tourists.
• Tuscany weather in October – In October, Tuscany is awash with glorious autumn colors and only about seven days of rain throughout the month. Temperatures during the day are typically about 64°F (18°C), cooling to about 48°F ( 9°C) at night.
• Amalfi Coast weather in October – It might be Fall in Italy, but the waters of the Amalfi Coast are normally still warm at this time of year. The region typically sees about eight rainy days during October, with almost balmy day temperatures (70°F / 21°C) and cool nights (57°F / 14°C). A beach day might still be on the cards here.
• Italian lakes weather in October – the Italian lakes region, including Lake Como and Lake Garda, experiences amiable weather in fall, with modest rainfall. Lake Como typically has day highs of about 63°F (17°C) and cooler evening lows of about 48°F (9°C). Lake Garda is similar, with days of 64°F (18°C) and nights of 48°F (9°C). October is one of the most beautiful times of the year to visit Italy.

A month of transition, October looks very different in the north of Italy and the South and the type of experience you are going to have will depend largely on your exact destination.

However, in most cases, in October Italy will treat you to fall atmospheres made of mild temperatures, beautiful foliage and earthy foods from harvest festivals.

I adore Italy in October. I am from Rome and while I travel around Italy in all seasons, October always makes these trips a little extra special.

The colors, the temperature, the harvest food, the busy-yet-not-excessive crowds make my beautiful country even more pleasant in October. Today I share my best tips for visiting at this time so you can make the most of this wonderful month!

The weather in Italy in October: what to expect

October is the start of autumn in Italy.

It is a time when trees start donning their autumnal colors and the temperature starts to drop, more rapidly in the North and on the mountains and more subtly in the Central and Southern Regions of Italy, as the season progresses.

At the start of October, you can assume temperatures are likely to be mild during the day and a little colder in the evening. You are likely to want to have t-shirt at lunchtime but a light jacket at dinner.

Towards the end of the month, temperatures tend to be significantly colder, a mid-season jacket being important to have in most places, for most of the day.

Overall, temperatures in Italy in October are mild and you can expect a mix of sunny and rainy days.

In terms of clothing, if traveling around Italy in October, is is best to think of this time as one for long pants, short and long-sleeve shirts and light jackets although in the central hours of the day, especially in the South, you may get temperatures so mild to allow for short sleeves.

Overall, October in Italy is not a time for swimming in the sea although, in the South, it is not unheard of to have nice beach days at the beginning of this month!

October festivities in Italy you need to know about

4 October : San Francesco – marked especially in Assisi, where several religious ceremonies in honor of the city’s most beloved sun take place on the night of the 3rd and the day of the 4th of October each year.

This is usually not a day off for offices and it should not affect your ability to visit museums and attractions.

Small centers with a strong Franciscan vocation are likely to have special festivals or markets to mark the occasion.

31 October – Halloween.

While not traditionally an Italian holiday, Halloween has well and truly arrived as a festivity, especially for kids.

Some themed events are organized in city museums and parks and costumes (any theme, not just scary ones) are encouraged.

How crowded is Italy in October?

October is still high tourism season in most of Italy and this is reflected in the number of people you’ll find in the most famous areas and the cost of accommodation.

Rome in particular is very busy in October and especially in the last few years, when heat and crowds have made the summers less appealing, Sorrento and Florence are also busy at this time, especially at the start of the month.

As the month progresses crowds diminish; however, the All Saints Break sees holidays both in Italy and abroad, so the last week of October is also often a very popular one with tourists.

The best places to visit in Italy in October

Rome in october.

October in Rome is famous for crisp, bright days and wonderful fall colors.

We locals even have a name for the glorious days of autumn in Rome: ‘Ottobrate Romane’.

This term historically indicated the day trips wealthy Roman families would take in October, making the most of the last bright days of the season to enjoy a day on the lake or in the country and nowadays simply indicated the stunning weather the city usually experiences at this time.

I adore Rome in October: my hometown is wonderful at this time!

If going to Italy in October, you can easily enjoy Rome at its best, although you won’t be alone: Rome is busy at this time and securing tickets in advance is paramount.

The Colosseum, Roman Forum, Palatine Hill, Vatican Museums, all of Rome’s beautiful piazzas will reward your travel planning with beautiful colors and (usually) the perfect sightseeing weather.

Venice in October

October is a lovely time in Venice, a moment when the city has a more intimate feel than at many other times.

The weather is hit and miss and you will have less daylight hours than if you came in the spring.

However, the city at this time tends to see fewer crowds and overall has a more pleasant feel than during humid and busy summer times.

Depending on the year, you may find Venice already a little chilly or still warm and sunny: last year at the end of October we were in short sleeves during the day and wrapped up in a puffy jacket at night!

Wonderful things to do in Venice in October include:

• See all Venice must-see sites, making the most of the slightly smaller crowds.
• Take a class with Row Venice to experience an ancient skill and get up close and personal with Venice canals
• A visit to the beautiful glass workshops in Murano, where you can learn how glass is made and buy gorgeous glass jewelry or home decor for yourself or a loved one (they make fantastic traditionally Italian souvenirs !)
• A visit to Burano and its delightful colorful houses: don’t forget to check out the local lace museum and taste Burano’s local biscuits buranelli – they are perfect with coffee or tea!
• Gorge on Venice chicchetti : chiccetti is the name Venice people give to small bites of food served in local establishments ( bacari ).

They come in several forms, with meat/fish/seafood/vegetables and they are a wonderful excuse to sit indoors and have a rest when the sun starts to go down or rain threatens to ruin your plans.

Tuscany in October

Tuscany and its rolling hills go through a magical time in the fall.

The mild weather is perfect for sightseeing and the bright sky of this season, with the occasional cloud coverage, always strikes me as the perfect backdrop for Tuscany’s Medieval and Renaissance gems.

This is the time to enjoy the stunning foliage of the Tuscan forests and to taste the warming food of this amazing terroir.

October in Tuscany evokes long walks in hilltop towns followed by dinners in local restaurants indulging in local wine and a platter of cheese.

The cities of Emilia Romagna offer endless opportunities for sightseeing and the area is a foodie paradise: this is the part of Italy that gave to the world tortellini, ragu’ alla bolognese , prosciutto di Parma and Parmesan, just to name its most famous creations!

Umbria in October

Umbria is a wonderful part of Italy to visit in October.

The region has beautiful medieval towns and stunning forests which, in October, blesses locals and visitors with an amazing harvest of olives, truffles, hazelnuts and more!

A visit to Umbria in October is ideal if you like sightseeing and can offer great opportunities for fun activities such as olive harvest and truffle hunting.

In October, Umbria celebrates its most famous saint, St Francis and especially the city of Assisi hosts large festivals in his honor at the time of his death, the 4th of October.

Puglia, the heel of Italy, is often blessed with amazing weather in October.

On a good year, you will be able to enjoy long days out and still wear summer clothing here, without the scorching heat of the summer.

Matera in October

Matera is unique in Italy but has fickle weather.

Hot in summer and cold in winter, it is perfect in October, when you can sightsee in mild temperatures and make the most of its crisp bright sky.

Matera has a unique history and it is visually stunning. I highly recommend you spend at least two full days here: the evenings in Matera especially, as the sun starts to go down on its cave dwellings and the city’s wine bars come to life is a delight.

Sicily in October

October is one of the best months to visit Sicily. Outside of the busy summer time, in October you will be able to visit Sicily’s stunning archaeological sites without melting in its torrid sun and you will still be able to enjoy beautiful sea views.

This is a good time for cultural tourism in Sicily rather than and sea and sun vacation since high temperatures, especially towards the end of the month, are not always guaranteed.

if you can rent a car, October is a fantastic time for a mini road trip in Sicily , away from the scorching temperatures of summer!

Other places you may want to visit in Italy in October

Dolomites – October is not a great time to visit the Dolomites.

At this time, the season is too advanced for most hiking, especially at high altitudes and not quite advanced enough for skiing.

However, you can still get lovely sights of the beautiful landscape changing its colors from green to golden, making an autumn trip here worth it.

Amalfi Coast – the Amalfi Coast is wonderful any time of the year and October is a lovely time to visit.

At this time, the temperatures are usually much milder than in summer and, by the end of the month, tourism services tend to wind down; however, you will still be well able to enjoy all this wonderful area has to offer: food, coastal views and history being only the beginning!

Especially if going towards the end of the month, double-check the schedule for ferries if you are counting on going to the islands and be prepared for the occasional rainy day.

Cinque Terre – Cinque Terre is a wonderful part of Italy however, it is not always at its best in October, especially towards the end of the month.

The weather is usually too cold for swimming and rains are frequent.

If coming at this time, check the conditions of the paths carefully before venturing up.

The villages and their wonderful food will be, however, well able to keep you busy in October too!

October is a lovely time for a family trip to Italy, a time when you can experience Italy’s local life, for instance going to the playground after Italian schools finish for the day, as well as enjoying traditional sightseeing activities.

However, October in Italy is not a time for beaches, pools or boat trips and even hiking sometimes can be tricky die to the weather. Therefore, I feel having the right expectations is key!

Keeping temperatures, in mind, I feel the best things to do with kids in Italy in October are:

Rome with kids – magical in October, when the city usually gets crisp sky and mild temperatures. The Colosseum the city’s parks are perfect for sunny days and the many family-friendly museums in the city offer refuge for the wet days.

What to book in advance for spending October in Italy

October is surprisingly busy in Italy and advance booking for all main attractions is recommended.

Attractions that need advance booking are:

Last Supper (Milan) – The Last Supper tends to book out quickly. I highly recommend you secure a ticket as soon as you have your dates set. The one at the provided link has a good cancellation policy, for peace of mind.

Uffizi Gallery (Florence) – always very busy, it is worth securing a guided tour in advance

Vatican Museums (Vatican City, Rome) – The Vatican Museums are vast and wonderful and this can result into the experience of your visit being overwhelming. Unless you know already what parts of the museums interest you, I highly recommend you get a guide and join a tour (either small group tour or private).

Good tickets/ Vatican Tour options (they all include the Sistine Chapel) are:

• Vatican and Sistine Chapel entry ticket
• Vatican and Sistine Chapel Tour
• Early morning Vatican and Sistine Chapel Tour (perfect if you want to beat the crowds or need the rest of your day free)

Colosseum (Rome)

The Colosseum and the nearby Roman Forum and Palatine Hill are stunning in October but advance booking is a must.

You can choose between several types of tickets:

• Standard entry ticket, with a guided tour of the Colosseum and self-guided tour of the Forum by Coopculture: this is the official OClosseum concession and has good value tickets but offers no flexibility on your booking time/date
• Colosseum, Roman Forum and Palatine Hill ticket by GetYourGuide – a good value ticket option with a good cancellation policy
• Colosseum and Ancient Rome tour for families with kids – a good option for families traveling with school-age kids

Trains do not usually need to be booked in advance however, high-speed trains on popular routes such as Rome to Florence do tend to book out or only have very expensive tickets available.

I recommend you use the website trenitalia.it or italo.it: these are the ones that allow buying tickets directly, without additional agency fees.

The last week of October is usually one of the busiest due to the proximity of the National Holiday on 1st of November, All Saints, a traditional long weekend for Italians. Book in advance if planning on traveling at that time.

When people ask me my favorite time to travel in Italy, I invariably say one of the shoulder seasons – spring or fall. But the truth is that the fall has my heart, largely because it’s when there are food and wine festivals all over the country. October is definitely in Italy’s fall shoulder season, which often means lower prices on things like accommodation and airfare, but those harvest festivals still draw crowds from both inside and outside the country – so don’t expect to have Italy all to yourself. Keep reading to find out what to expect from October in Italy, including the weather and what’s on the calendar.

Weather in Italy in October

While September temperatures can still be summery and hot, October usually heralds the true start of fall. Temperatures in October go down all over the peninsula, and there’s a higher probaility of rainfall. This is one of those months when you’ll probably need both sunglasses and an umbrella on hand, just in case.

You aren’t likely to find Italians or Europeans on the beaches in October – they think that’s way too cold, and besides they’ve had their beach holidays in August – but if you’re coming from a cooler climate you might be thrilled to find warm days and nearly-empty beaches.

Some average temperature ranges for different parts of Italy are:

• Northern Italy: 45-65°F (7-18°C)
• Central Italy: 55-70°F (13-21°C)
• Southern Italy: 65-75°F (18-24°C)

And, as always, check the current extended forecast for where you’re actually going just before you leave – when you’re packing is a good time, actually – so you can find out in advance if there’s an unseasonably cold or hot spell predicted.

Holidays & Festivals in Italy in October

Like I said at the outset, fall is when food and festival enthusiasts will want to be in Italy. October harvest festivals include the White Truffle Festival in Alba and Perugia’s famous EuroChocolate, both of which draw huge crowds of foodies from around the world. There aren’t any big national holidays in October to think about (those can sometimes mess with transportation schedules), but it never hurts to see if there’s a calendar of events for the towns you’re visiting, just in case you’ll be around for a celebration of a local patron saint or a little-known harvest festival. Why should you go to Italy in October?

So, umm, have I mentioned the food festivals? And that includes wine, too? You get the idea, I think – foodies love October in Italy. Not a foodie? No problem – October has plenty of perks for you, too.

As mentioned, October is truly in Italy’s fall shoulder season. If you’re on a tight budget, that can help you save quite a bit on airfare, accommodation, and even sometimes activities like walking tours. Attractions don’t typically have off-season prices, though. Aside from the people who flock to food and wine festivals, there is usually a noticeable drop-off in the number of people who flood Italian shores during the summer. No, Rome isn’t empty – ever – but the lines to see things like the Colosseum get shorter.

Those of you who are primarily focused on sun and beaches won’t find October suitable, since it’s just as likely to be cool in the evenings and rain a bit as it is to be lovely and sunny. People who seek out gardens will be disappointed that things aren’t in bloom all over the place. And October still has so many things going for it that it remains one of my favorite times to be in Italy.

So mid-late October the weather in Rome is still nice – 70’s F ????

All the temperatures I’ve listed are averages, meant to give you an idea of what the weather is like in Italy in any given season, but those can vary drastically in real life. I always encourage people to check the current forecast as they’re packing at home so they’re not totally caught off-guard.

And starting in October you will find many of the boat lines on the lakes closed

Do you have any insight for the Slow Food events happening on even years in Turin? I’m planning to go and was hoping for tips from you or anyone.

I don’t see anything on the website other than a “see you in 2018,” but I’d imagine that’s the best place to keep checking.

We are planning a trip in October. Given that it’s now mid April, how far in advance do you usually book your airfare for the best rates? I’m seeing rates of $1,100-1,200ish out of Cincinnati currently for mid October and we’re trying to decide if we should go ahead and jump on those or not. Thanks for the great article!

I usually set email alerts for the routes I’m considering (if there are multiple airports you can fly out of and into) so that I get notified any time the price changes – in either direction. Then I can monitor the price and have a better idea of when it’s a good time to buy. And then, after I buy my tickets, I cancel those alerts and stop checking prices to keep from driving myself crazy. 🙂 I’d say you’re in a good position to start monitoring prices, but personally I don’t book flights six months in advance.

Is October a good time to visit Italy

Let’s start with the fact that there’s probably no wrong time to visit Italy, but there surely is the best time for you specifically . Whether October is the best time for you to visit my country depends on different factors, including the type of weather you prefer, the type of holiday you are after, and your travel style.

In this article, I will share with you some key information about Italy in October to help you make up your mind.

PS: If you want my personal opinion, I think October is one of the best months to travel to Italy because the weather is so nice, not too hot and not too cold, throughout the different regions from North to South. Let’s look at the October weather in Italy.

How’s the Weather in Italy in October?

The best way to describe October in Italy is to use the Italian weather expression “tempo mite” , meaning mild weather. As you can see from the table below, every major Italian city from North to South has a mild temperature , especially when compared to the extremes of Summer and Winter.

This is why I am also including that information so that it gives you an easy way to compare different times of the year if the weather is a big factor in your decision. If it is, I get it as it certainly is for me.

October Temperatures in Italy

PS: As you can see above, the weather can vary from one day to the next one. So pack wisely and be flexible with your itinerary. During our 2 weeks holiday, we only had one cloudy morning in Northern Italy and cloudy day with a drizzle in Florence, so nothing to complain about.

Similarly, as you can see in the above table, the temperatures vary a lot, from the lowest being 43°F in Bolzano, a major city close to the Dolomites, to the highest going up to 75°F in Sicily.

I chose not to include the April averages simply because they are usually very similar to those in October.

This information should help you in two ways.

• First, you get to see the average temperatures for your favorite cities or the closest ones geographically, and you can decide whether the October weather suits you.
• Secondly, if you are not fixed on a destination, you can let the temperatures guide your choice of which Italian city to fly to at the beginning of Fall.

Rain Season in Italy

If you are like me, knowing how cold and hot the weather it’s not enough to make up your mind. You also want to know how much it rains in Italy during October. Have a look at the rainfall averages below.

The table above also shows you the rainiest and least rainy month for each of the major cities listed. That way you can easily spot whether your destination is very rainy during October.

You can immediately see that these cities are the rainiest in October: Genoa, Naples . If one of those was the city you had in mind visiting, and rain is a breaking factor, then you might want to choose a different one.

PS: As a rule of thumb, the rainiest and least rainy months are clustered together. So if you see that your number 1 destination, for example, Rome, is rainiest in November that usually means that rainfall in October and December will also be higher than the average.

What Season is it in Italy in October?

In case you have any doubts, let me confirm that  in Italy October is the first month of Fall . While the season officially starts between 21-23 September, it’s during this month that the weather starts changing.

If you’d like to know what Fall is like in Italy, that’s a question to be answered in a separate article because Fall lasts 3 months, and in that time the weather changes a lot, especially from North to South.

As a general guide, the closer you get to Christmas, the colder it gets in most parts of the country. However, the South of Italy is still very pleasant towards the end of the season, when it comes to average temperatures. Fall is also the season of beautiful foliage and changing colors. You can expect to see the most falling leaves in November and December in both Northern and mid-central cities.

Best Italian Cities to Visit in October

October is a great time for major cities like Rome, Florence, and Venice to beat peak crowds. Smaller cities like Verona, Lucca, and Siena also offer pleasant trips this month.

One of my top favorite Italian cities to visit at the beginning of the Fall season is Turin.

Turin is the capital city of Piedmont and is known for its chocolate, its low-rise panettone, its Baroque architecture, the beautiful parks and viewpoints, and the scenic views of the Po River. If you want to choose a less crowded city, that’s romantic, cozy, very tasty, and great for shopping, add this to your list.

Smaller Towns & Less Touristy Places in Italy

For a more authentic local experience, consider Italy’s slow travel in smaller, lesser-known towns and destinations. Places in Marche, Umbria, Emilia-Romagna,Valle d’Aosta, and Abruzzo offer charm, amazing food, hiking and fewer crowds.

My Highlights I highly recommend visiting the Dolomites and the Trentino region this time of the year. October is a wonderful month when it still feels like Summer but it also looks like Fall. It’s neither too hot nor cold, so you can enjoy every activity in the best possible weather. If you want to enjoy the mountains with great weather, then you’ll love it.  Just a heads up, the mountains are not going to be as lush as at the beginning of Summer. If you are dreaming of bright green valleys, then go in July.

It’s a lovely time to take a stroll along the Po River , which runs through Torino (known as the country’s chocolate capital), and soak in the city views from another perspective. There are so many  things to do in Turin , and no visit to Turin is complete without a stop at the Royal Palace of Turin, which houses a magnificent collection of art and artifacts from the House of Savoy family. It’s a great time to see the autumn foliage as well.

Piedmont offers truffle tastings and wine and chocolate events during the month of October. This is the home of the famous Barolo and Barbaresco wine regions. 

Although prices drop in November, you’re more likely to hit rainy weather.

Sicily in October

Sicily in October is a good option for beach lovers. The water temperature may even be warm enough to swim and the risk of rain is relatively low. 

One appealing option is Mondello Beach , a favorite of many locals. Liberty-style villas and an architecturally stunning bathing station (now housing a restaurant and bar) frame the water. Another seaside favorite is the beach at Cefalu.

The less crowded season is also a great time to explore the multicultural treasures of cities like Palermo, Taormina, and Siracusa. Established in Palermo in 2006, Le Vie dei Tesori is a unique cultural festival that transforms cities and small villages across Sicily into widespread museums with concerts, art exhibitions, and more. In October, visitors can participate in a series of events in Catania, Sciacca, Alcamo, Ragusa (the setting o f Detective Montalbano ), Scicli, and Noto.

Tuscany in October

Val d’Aosta , Italy’s smallest region, is a bit off the beaten track. This has left its quaint village more authentic and unspoiled by mass tourism. 

Weather in the Aosta Valley can be glorious in October. The fresh mountain air lures hikers who soak in breathtaking mountain views of the valley with its fall foliage on display.

Each year, the EuroChocolate festival is held in Perugia (the region’s capital and the birthplace of Perugina chocolate ). The event brings chocolate art displays, sculpting, tastings, and street performances to the city. Held since 1933, it is one of the largest chocolate festivals in Europe.

White truffles are showcased at the autumn food festival that takes place at the end of October in the small medieval town of Gubbio (featured in the long-running Don Matteo TV series). The festival includes cooking events and meetings with starred chefs.

Puglia in October

  Puglia, l ocated at the heel of Italy’s boot, has become one of Italy’s most popular tourist destinations. 

In October, the temperature is pretty mild. There is abundant sunshine most of the time, but there can be some rain. It’s a nice time to visit some of the interesting towns and villages in the region, including Ostuni, Locorotondo , Trani, Martina Franca, Galatina , and Alberobello (home of the trulli ).

Wine lovers can enjoy winery visits and tastings of some of the region’s special wines (such as Rosato, the pink wine of Puglia) during the low season when producers have more time to spend with them.

Emilia Romagna in October

October is typically the driest month in Emilia Romagna, the region known for having some of the best foods in Italy. 

The region is a foodie’s paradise in the fall with food fairs and festivals. The Castel del Rio Chestnut PGI Fest is held every Sunday in the center of the village. At the beginning of October, the Mostra del Fungo e del Tartufo e Festa dell’Uva (the mushroom and truffle exhibition and grape festival) is held in the streets of the ancient village of Bobbio.

Every year, Tartufesta (the white truffle festival) is held between October and November in the Appennino Bolognese (the hilly area around Bologna). If you are a truffle lover, this National White Truffle Fair in Sant’ Agata Feltria is an event not be be missed. The fragrance of white truffles permeates the air as vendors proudly display truffles and other seasonal products. You can even sit at long tables under a tent and enjoy a prepared meal with truffles.

Music lovers flock to the cities of Parma and Buseto from mid-September to mid-October for the Verdi Festival , and motor enthusiasts can attend the second round of the ACI Racing Weekend in Imola.

No visit to Emilia Romagna would be complete without a stop in Bologna , the region’s capital city. Although the Holy Day is on November 1, a host of weekend activities take place preceding it, both in the city and surrounding villages.

For the entire month of October, FICO Eataly World , a unique, food-centric theme park offers a rich calendar of Halloween events for scary fun for children and adults. Kids can carve and decorate pumpkins and a stroll through all the shops offers a variety of treats for visitors.  

Liguria in October

Wedged between the mountains and the sea, Liguria is known both for its agricultural products and seafood. Most tourists flock to the coastal towns of Portofino, Cinque Terre, and Sanremo; more than 200 small towns and villages are tucked into the mountains further inland. Visiting after the prime tourist season allow you to experience these towns and villages as the locals do.

While the weather is generally sunny in Liguria in October, it can get breezy with some rain towards the end of the month.

In the second half of the month, a Science Festival is held in Genoa with exhibitions, workshops, shows, and conferences geared to adults, children, and researchers. In October, the Castagneta and Polenta (chestnut and polenta) festival in Cogoleto showcases Ligurian food delicacies and desserts. 

There are also anchovy festivals in a number of small seaside towns like Laigueglia in the province of Savona.

Veneto in October

An easy day trip from Venice, the weather in the Veneto region can be quite pleasant in October, averaging 65℉. Located in the northeast, Veneto is one of the major wine-producing regions of Italy. In October, the trees and vines are adorned with fall colors.

Visitors to Veneto in October can take advantage of the white truffle and porcini mushroom season. It also isn’t too late to see grape harvests (particularly for red and late-harvest wines) during this period. The wine region has more than 90 producers in 18 municipalities that offer tastings and vineyard tours by appointment. 

Asolo (dubbed the Pearl of Treviso and City of 100 Horizons) is perfect for those who love art, history, architecture, and wine.

The Vicenza Opera Festival , held in the Teatro Olimpico , takes place in Vicenza (about 35 minutes from Venice by train), featuring opera, ballet and classical music. Other performances take place throughout the year. This is the city where you can see all the architectural masterpieces of Andrea Palladio.

If you are a fan of architecture, history and/or culture, the Regional Institute of Venetian Villas and the Association for Venetian Villas sponsor a two-day national event to tell the story of villas through visits, tastings, workshops, readings, performances, conferences and exclusive meetings. 

Deciding where to go in Italy in October

There are so many places to go that choosing “the” place really depends on where you’ve been and what you want to experience. Rain or shine, it’s hard to make a mistake when visiting Italy.

One last piece of advice: The timing of the grape harvest, which generally takes place in September and October, varies from place to place and is, of course, dependent on weather conditions. So be sure to confirm the harvest dates with any wineries you want to visit. Here are some of the regional wine tastings and tours to consider. 

Similarly, some religious and cultural festival dates also fluctuate from year to year. Local tourism offices can give you up-to-date information.

Best Places to visit in Italy in October

October is the heart of Autumn and it is the best period to admire the beautiful foliage in the Italian mountains and hills. Weather can vary according to the different Regions and it goes from 20-22°C in the South to 14-15°C in the North of the Country. Weather is also very unstable, combining sunny and mild days with clouds and rainfalls.

Italians don’t usually go on vacation in October, so the main cities of art are quieter and it is a great period to visit them and enjoy a calmer and slower atmosphere. Halloween is mostly celebrated by kids and you can find many parties and special events in all the main cities.

Things to do in Italy in October

1. Dive into the Greek era in the Temple Valley (Sicily)

What: the so-called “Temple Valley” is a large archeological park located near Agrigento. Here you can admire 10 ancient Greek temples dating back to a period going from the VI to the II century B.C. It is one of the most visited archeological parks in Europe and it is included in UNESCO’s World Heritage List.

What to see : the Temple of Jupiter (with the last giant statue of Atlas supporting the heavenly vault), the Temple of Concordia (the best-preserved temple of the valley), the Temple of the Dioscuri (it is the symbol of the city of Agrigento) and the Kolymbethra Garden with its mix of Mediterranean nature and ancient ruins.

How long: 1day trip from Agrigento, Palermo or Trapani. You’ll need about 3 hours to visit the entire archeological park.

Why October: because of its mild weather suitable to wander long hours under the sun (there is no shade there!)

What to see : the most scenic part of this area is called Maddalena and it is located on top of the homonymous hill. From there, you’ll enjoy a great view of the city below. Another popular park is the one located on top of Superga hill with its famous sanctuary. Don’t miss a visit to the “Villa of the Queen”, that is the former residence of Queen Ludovica with its beautiful Italian-style garden.

How long: 1day trip from Turin. If you’ve never been to Turin before, save at least 3-4 days for your visit

6. Celebrate Halloween in Triora, the Village of the Witches (Liguria)

What: Triora is a medieval village located in the mountains which is famous for its legends involving the presence of witches. They actually stem from a real historical event: in the XVI century, some local women were accused of witchcraft and consequently processed and condemned.

What to see: the main attraction of the village is its Folklore Museum telling the story of the Triora witches and showing the local mountain lifestyle, which is so different from what you would expect to find in Liguria. On a sunny day, you cannot miss the trekking trail called “Alpine Path” and connecting Italy to France.

How long: 1day trip from Imperia or Sanremo but also from France (Nice, Menton or Monaco).

Why October: to celebrate Halloween in a themed location and to enjoy the many events for children

Weather : the average temperature is 16°C with an alternation of sun and rain

Practical tips: the only way to reach Triora is by car. There are many curves, so it’s not an easy drive for people suffering from motion sickness!

7. Learn the history of the Aragonese domination in Ostuni (Puglia)

What: Ostuni is also called “The White City” for its typical white buildings and it is a very popular city of art attracting many tourists all year long. Its golden period was under the Aragonese domination and you can still see many traces of that era in its picturesque Old Town.

What to see: the main feature of the town (together with its white color) consists in its majestic walls built by the Aragonese Kings. A couple of other unmissable stops are the gothic Cathedral with its huge rose window and the rich diocesan museum.

8. Attend Rome’s Film Festival (Lazio)

What: the local Film Festival was created in 2006 and it takes place in the Auditorium Parco della Musica during the central days of October. It is an international festival attracting movie lovers from all around Europe. The winner is chosen by the general public among the new proposals of the season.

What to see: the Festival is held in the Flaminio district, which is one of the most modern and contemporary areas of Rome. There are several art museums there and the most important one is the MAXXI, which is the National Museum of the XXI Century Art. 10. Attend Lucca’s Comics and Games Convention (Tuscany)

What to see: there are many themed exhibitions everywhere, but most designers and illustrators display their works in the so-called Illustration Palace. While sightseeing, October tourists enjoy more mild temperatures, so they won’t be battling the usual summer heat waves. Some may find it easier to explore outside, visit attractions, and get around the city without excessive temperatures. Temperatures vary around Italy, so it’s important to prepare for your exact destination.

On average, northern Italy sees temperatures ranging from 45-65°F (7-18°C,) southern Italy from, 65-75°F (18-24°C,) and central Italy from 55-70°F (13-21°C). Always make sure to pack layers and check the local forecast before venturing out for the day.

October can be an exciting month to visit because of the unique events. While there aren’t many national holidays during this time of year, the month fills up with festivals. Since this is the time of year for harvest, many of the festivals have to do with food and wine. If you’re a self-proclaimed foodie, visiting in October would be a real treat. Some of the best Italian festivals in October include:

White Truffle Festival

Located in Alba, this festival takes place throughout the month of October. Many consider this to be one of Italy’s most important festivals, as it celebrates one the world’s rarest ingredients. World-renowned chefs are in agreement that Alba is the most prime place on earth to get white truffle mushrooms. The event is crawling with truffle hunters who set up stands to show off their finds. Top chefs create dishes with these delicious ingredients for guests to sample. The festival offers visitors the chance to go truffle hunting or buy some of these mushrooms to take home. In addition to the truffles, there is also a donkey race, musical entertainment, costumes, art shows, wine tasting, and a hot air balloon show. Foodies will love this festival.

EuroChocolate

Chocolate lovers should head to Perugia for this annual event in October. The entire town comes alive with the happy chatter of chocolate enthusiasts. The air smells like fresh hot coco, and the sight of glistening chocolate bars is everywhere. Visitors can find chocolate in a variety of flavors as well as chocolate liquor, kebabs, and fountains. Guests can tour the local chocolate factory, and help themselves to samples throughout the day. You’ll definitely want to take some chocolate home as souvenirs.

Enzo Ferrari Memorial Marathon in Maranello

This annual race takes place each October, starting in Maranello and ending in Carpi. The marathon features both male and female athletes, and can be viewed by visitors from the sidelines. While it isn’t an event that people typically travel overseas for, it can be fun to watch if you happen to be in the area during this time of year.

Venice Marathon

If you’re  visiting Venic e in October, you may catch the annual marathon that takes place here. There are typically athletes both from Italy and afar, all competing amongst the canals and beautiful views of Venice. The race runs through the famous, St. Mark’s Square and over the Bridge of Liberty. So, you’ll get a little  tour of Venice  as you follow along with the race.

Also referred to as All Saints Eve, Halloween is celebrated with parties and costumes throughout Italy. The country’s largest Halloween celebration is held in Borgo a Mozzano, on Devil’s Bridge. Visitors will find interactive games, horror movie screenings, and haunted passages. The town of Corinaldo claims to be the ‘Capital of Halloween.’ They host spooky attractions, light and sound shows, and themed entertainment throughout the town. Triora, the City of Witches, hosts a Halloween festival annually, and many amusement parks decorate for the holiday too. The entire country hosts themed dinners, movie nights, costume parties, and haunted houses.

Rome Film Festival

Usually taking place in October, this festival is great for movie buffs. There are international premiers, famous actors, and events going on throughout the city. You may even spot some world-famous actors as they visit restaurants and sites around  the city .

WHAT TO SEE/DO IN ITALY IN OCTOBER

Aside from the weather and events, Italy in October is memorable for the atmosphere. Foodies will experience the best of the country’s harvest. And budget travelers will have some relief from the sky-high summer prices. Crowds really begin to drop off during this autumn month, making Italy much more pleasant for laid-back travelers.

In October, airlines tend to drop their prices when it comes to Italy flights. Hotels and hostels drop their prices too, and travelers can score some fantastic deals. Certain areas of Italy are thriving during this time of year. If you’re visiting in October, these are the places you should especially check out.

With the harvest season in full swing, the countryside of  Tuscany  is abound with food and drink. There are food festivals and wine tastings going on all throughout the month. And, the colorful natural scenery makes for the perfect backdrop when touring around. Visitors will have access to fresh olives, chestnuts, mushrooms, and truffles. Visitors won’t just have food to look forward to either. There are art festivals, craft shows, vintage markets, bike races, and street performances too. Visit Chianti in the beginning of the month for the vintage bike race, or Cinigiono for the festive floats during carnival. Palaia is a great destination for wine and truffles. And, Montescudaio is the spot for wine festival festivities.

This area of Italy is an absolute dream for food and wine lovers. During harvest season, Piemonte really thrives. Located in the hilly area that borders France and Switzerland, Piemonte has a unique climate for growing produce and grapes for wine. Visitors to Piemonte in October are in for a treat when it comes to dining. Restaurants around the region have specialty dishes and events to celebrate this bountiful time of year. Make sure to visit the town of Barolo, a place known for its wine and pretty views during fall. Book a truffle hunt when visiting this region, because the thrill of finding these mushrooms yourself is almost as good as eating them.

Bordering Tuscany is Umbria, also called the ‘Green Region.’ It’s made up of medieval hill towns, thick forests, and wineries. Since it is so close to Tuscany, Umbria has often taken a back seat to this famous, Italian destination. However, the region is starting to become more popular, as much of its countryside scenery is the same. Visitors will find olive groves, vineyards, fresh produce, and plenty of restaurants that incorporate all of these local flavors.

Since  Florence  is such a popular destination, it’s best to visit when the summer crowds die down. The city will still be bustling with visitors, but the crowds won’t be as bad once Autumn comes around. The temperatures cool down a bit, and there are plenty of events to add to the usual attractions. If you’re visiting on October 8th, make sure to catch the medieval procession that honors Santa Reparata, a 3rd century A.D martyr. The display begins at Piazza di Parte Guelfa and runs to Santa Reparata’s crypt at the Duomo. In mid-October, the week-long fair, Fiera di San Luca, takes place just 20 minutes from Florence. It’s the oldest agricultural fair in Europe, and offers livestock shows, traditional food, artisans, and music.

During the summer months,  Rome  is absolutely packed with tourists. The weather can be extremely hot, making it difficult to get around. In October, the crowds die out and the cooler weather brings some relief.  Sightseeing in Rome  becomes a lot easier and more pleasant during this time of year. For music lovers, the Roma Jazz Festival usually takes place in October. Rome has some of the best jazz clubs around Europe, and this is where you’ll find many of the performances. There’s also the RomaEuropa Festival, which showcases theater and dance performances. Aside from the events, Rome is decorated in Autumn colors, making the ancient buildings look even more impressive. The markets, like Campo de’ Fiori, are full of seasonal produce like chestnuts, artichokes, pumpkins, arugula, and zucchini.

October in  Venice  is a great time for entertainment. This is the start of the opera season, and visitors can catch some outstanding shows. Visit the city’s most famous opera house, Teatro La Fenice, to get your first taste of Italian opera. During the first week in October, attend the Festa del Mosto, located on the island of Sant’Erasmo. This is where the wine pressing begins and is a local spot to ring in the harvest with delicious food and wine. In this countryside setting, visitors also get to listen to live music, watch the rowing regatta, and taste new products from the region.

WHAT TO PACK WHEN VISITING ITALY IN OCTOBER

Since both the weather and temperatures can be unpredictable, it’s best to pack layers. A rain jacket, heavy sweater, walking shoes that can withstand the rain, jeans, shorts, and a t-shirt should make it into the suitcase. Don’t forget to pack sunglasses, an umbrella, and a hat because the weather can be either sunny or rainy during this time of year.

TIPS FOR VISITING ITALY IN OCTOBER

• Don’t expect to spend a lot of time at the beach. However, pack a swimsuit because high temperatures do occur during this time of year.

Italy weather in October is pleasant! Temperatures naturally cool down as we process into fall, so starting in September and moving into October means that the weather will gradually get cooler

Expect crisp fall leaves, and sunny days when visiting! But don’t forget about the possibility of some wet weather too. You’ll really get to see the changes of autumn in Northern Italy. These changes will be more subtle in Central and Southern regions.

Overall, the weather in Italy in October is mild. Historically, the average temperature in Italy in October stay around 77 degrees Fahrenheit (25 degrees Celsius). But of course, the region can also influence this!

For example, in Milan the average temperature is about 18 degrees Celsius (22 degrees Fahrenheit) and in Rome in October it is about 22 degrees Celsius (71 degrees Fahrenheit).

When taking the water temperature into consideration, know that the nation’s center averages between 55-70 degree Fahrenheit (13-21 degrees Celsius). And don’t forget that the more south we go, the warmer we get! So pack light layers and waterproof clothing. Know that when you book the warmest place in Italy in October will be toward the south!

Water Temperature In Italy are Getting too Cold to Swim

Overall, October is not a great time for swimming. The water temperatures in Italy are getting too cold. However, if you are visiting the more Southern regions, you may find yourself having a nice sunny beach day at the beginning of the month!

On average, the water temperature of the seas hover around 69 degrees Fahrenheit (21 degrees Celsius). Again, this can very depending on where you are visiting. The closer you are to the south, the warmer the water can get.

For example, in Sicily, the water averages about 72 degrees Fahrenheit (22 degrees Celsius), and Positano is 71 degrees Fahrenheit (21 degrees Celsius). So these are warmer locations! But if you are trying to visit Cinque Terre, chances are a beach day is not on your agenda.

With the average water temps being 14 degrees Celsius (57 degrees Fahrenheit), you’ll freeze! But that does not mean that visiting Cinque Terre in October is off your bucket list– just don’t go swimming when visiting 🙂

October is Shoulder Season in Italy

Busy season for Italy is typically between May- September. That means visiting Italy in October or looking for vacation spots shouldn’t be too difficult!

Keep this in mind when planning your trip. While the cooler weather can make the hikes of the Dolomites nice, with winter setting in, some lifts may close. Make sure to plan and call ahead!

And if you are hiking in this cooler weather, pack appropriately. Down jackets, beanies, gloves, hiking poles– these will keep you safe and comfortable in the cooler temps. Try to remember as well that the probability of participation is higher toward the end of October, so this may up your chances of snow too!

Rain is common throughout all regions during the month of October. This means a good raincoat or umbrella is your best friend! And while the participation may increase toward the end of the month, most of the rain is often accompanied with sunny days too.

Finding the best time to visit Italy is one of the toughest decisions to make. Ironically, having a specific holiday calendar makes this part of planning easier, even though sometimes you might prefer traveling in a different season. The best time to visit Italy is spring for many reasons, but it all comes down to your personal preferences.

Every month and every season, in fact, has a different experience to offer. Do you want to be part of the Yule spirit in Italy? December is a magical month to plan your trip. Are you a beach enthusiast? Plenty of beautiful beaches in Italian regions like Sicily, Puglia, and Sardinia.

January – the best time to visit italy for crowd-free landmarks.

January is a cold winter month and the best time to visit Italy if you are looking for quieter landmarks and cheaper flights and hotels. This better applies after January 7th, when the Christmas festivities are completely over and the streets are much less crowded.

Usually, this is a month we expect rain but it’s already been a few years since we had quite dry January. From Rome south, the temperatures are cold but totally bearable and if you are wearing your winter jacket you won’t have any problem. In the northern regions of Italy , from Florence up north, you will definitely find colder temperatures and in fact, this is the highest season for the ski resorts in Trentino-Alto Adige , Valle d’Aosta, and Veneto.

February – The month of Carnival in Italy

There are mainly two reasons for you to be wanting to visit Italy in February: Carnival and fewer crowds.

Colorful and exciting Carnival parties and celebrations take place all over Italy with the most famous being in Venice , Viareggio and Ivrea, but not the only ones worth visiting. Lovers of offbeat travel will certainly enjoy heading to Sardinia for the Sartiglia in Oristano or Mamoiada’s Mamuthones , or see the Carnival of Ronciglione near Rome.

March – When to visit Italy for a quiet vibe

March marks the end of winter and the beginning of spring in Italy. While the weather is a bit unstable with unexpected temperature drops and occasional showers, the low tourist season makes it possible to enjoy a more authentic experience across the country, including big draws like Rome, Florence, and Venice.

Together with fewer crowds, in March like in February you can expect lower rates, especially for flights and hotels. Everything will be open, from historic sites to restaurants, and you will have a better experience than when the huge spring and summer crowds hit the country.

April – When to visit Italy for Easter

In April, the weather starts being warmer and sunnier. Since it’s not very hot yet, wandering around the cities and towns is much more pleasant than in summer. Plus, April is when in Italy we celebrate Easter, a very heartfelt religious commemoration at the end of Lent.

April is also when Italians start getting out more often. In fact, on Easter Monday we like to enjoy a day out in nature and set ourselves up for a relaxing picnic, and this is pretty much how we kick off the “outdoors season”.

May – The best time to visit Italy for perfect weather

May is probably the best time to visit Italy overall because the weather is perfect: the temperatures are very pleasant, the winter cold is gone and the summer heat is not here yet. So the days are warm enough for a nice stroll but not enough to make you sweat.

This, however, is far from being a secret and you are likely to find crowds pretty much everywhere. In Rome , the May crowds are bigger than in August. Every location is perfect to visit in May because walking is pleasant in big cities, smaller towns, and obviously hiking paths and routes . May, for example, is the best time to hike the Gorropu canyon in Sardinia.

June – The beginning of summer in Italy

Warmer than May, June is the last month of spring and when summer starts. It is also a pleasant month to travel to Italy because it’s still not as hot as July. Depending on where you go, you will find large crowds. The big draws like Rome, Florence, and Venice, will be quite packed, but not so much the beach destinations.

In fact, I think June is a great time to hit the beach in Italy because of the great weather and the fewer crowds than July and August. In June, especially at the beginning of the month,

July – Italy’s hottest month weather-wise

July is the central month of summer in Italy and in my opinion the hottest. You are likely to find hot days also in June and definitely in August, but around mid-August the weather starts being whimsical, while July is usually always hot.

The beaches across the country will start being crowded and tourists will start withdrawing from the largest cities due to the heat. Famous beach destinations like Puglia, Sicily, Sardinia , and the Adriatic Coast will start being very crowded even though still less than August.

In July, you can find also local festivals such as food fairs or religious celebrations like the Ardia horse race in Sardinia.

August – The crowdest month on the Italian beaches

This is the month most Italians go on holiday so beach destinations will be very crowded, especially on the week around August 15th, a religious anniversary that translates into beach parties and many activities shut down for almost a week.

The weather is still very hot because summer is at full tilt but towards mid-August, it starts getting spoiled and you might find occasional rain, wind, and clouds. August is a true holiday month and everything is slower and more relaxed in Italy.

September – The best time to visit Italy for quiet beach time

September is the last month of summer and even though fall starts on the 21st, sometimes the weather is better than in August. For sure, you should expect warm temperatures in September, too, and since Italians are back to work and students are back to school, fewer crowds on the beach.

Inside the cities, however, is where most tourists will gather again, and even though not as much as in spring, landmarks and piazzas are definitely going to be busy.

October – When to travel to Italy for pleasant city walks

This is the first full month of fall but temperatures are mild and very pleasant since the stifling heat is gone. Rains start to appear from time to time but not so often and if there are some storms, they don’t last long.

October is always less busy than May but the weather is quite similar. I can’t say that you are not going to find any crowds because it won’t be true. In fact, in Rome, this year fall has been one of the busiest seasons right after spring. Beach and mountain destinations will be less busy.

November – When to enjoy the fall in Italy

November is often one of the wettest months in Italy but since I don’t mind the rain, fall is when I would plan my trip. The only festivity in November is Toussaint and the Day of the Dead at the beginning of the month and usually, these are the days that mark a sharp change in the weather, fully welcoming the fall.

December – To experience the Christmas vibe in Italy

December is a beautiful time to travel to Italy because the Christmas spirit lasts for the whole month with all the preparations and decorations. Tourist-wise, it’s not very busy but you will find the historic centers very crowded with locals on the lookout for gifts and to enjoy the themed events.

If you are religious, if you like shopping, or simply if you enjoy the festive spirit and don’t mind some cold weather, December is definitely the best time to visit Italy.

The best time to visit Italy for the best weather: May-June

The last months of spring are perfect weather-wise because the winter cold is gone and the summer heat hasn’t arrived yet. These are also some of the busiest months in landmark-packed cities where taking a stroll is a fantastic experience.

The beaches will still be quiet even though especially in June, the weather allows for some sunbathing and swimming. Although, keep in mind that the summer is just at the beginning and the sea water is not warm yet.

If you are hitting the coast, head to the beach in the warmest hours of the day and enjoy the remaining hours with some cultural sightseeing that in Italy is possible pretty much everywhere.

The best time to visit Italy for the beaches: June to September

From June through September is the best time to hit the beach in Italy. July and August will be hot and very crowded while June and September much less crowded.

The whole month of September is usually hotter than June. Keep in mind that summer starts only on June 21st so for the first three weeks it’s still spring and the water might not be warm enough to swim, while in September it’s perfect.

The best time to go to Italy for photography: Fall

I love fall and I think this is the best time to visit Italy to take incredible pictures. Fall offers a beautiful light and the falling leaves come in with a kaleidoscope of orange, red, purple, and brown, adding to the romance of the skies.

In fall, you are likely to find rain but you know what they say, right after a good rainfall, photographers grab their cameras and go out and about to catch beautiful light and reflections. Rome’s streets are quite full of potholes that become pools after the rain and when historic sights reflect on them, you can snap fantastic shots!

The best time to visit Italy for fewer crowds: January to March

January through March are the least busy months in the big cities like Rome but obviously more crowded in ski resorts across the country, especially in the northern regions. If you want to enjoy popular landmarks in peace and silence without being surrounded by crowds, winter is the best time to travel to Italy.

This is also the coldest season so even if you are not going skiing, keep in mind to pack winter clothes also for the other destinations.

We will be visiting in October of next year - 2 couples mid-60's fit and mobile.

We love wandering, hiking (3 miles not 10), wine tasting, great food, art (one couple could spend a day in a museum - the other more like 2 hours), shopping, and all things touristy without taking tours (in other words, we want to see the leaning tower of Pisa which is touristy - but we're tourists - but no group bus tours)

2 nights Milan then rent a car to go to Bellagio (or maybe you will say don't rent a car )

2 or 3 nights Bellagio (not sure due to the weather) Then train to Florence

3 nights Florence then rent a car for Tuscany 8 nights

5 nights San Gmignano

3 nights Montepuliciano

Drive to Florence for flight out (one couple goes to Venice - we must fly to Scotland for a wedding)

We're sure about all but Bellagio. Maybe a day trip there to see the lake instead of driving and staying there since it won't be warm - we adore sitting outdoors with coffee AM and a glass of wine PM.

Any thoughts are most appreciated.

Car rentals in Florence are best done at the airport rental site. Have a look at www.autoeurope.com, then select a car with Zero deductible. This is the best stress free rental.

The weather is still fine in Lake Como in October; just layered clothing and less crowded.

Ricardo gave the best recommendation: go by train to Varenna . You can decide if you want to stay this 2 nights in Varenna or Bellagio. I would stay in Varenna, because from there you can make a short trip by ferry to Bellagio but have also more possibities around: Maybe hike up to Vezio Castle with a breathtaking view over Lake Como . Or go further on by train to Bellano, visiting the Gorge there. Or visit Villa Cipressi or Villa Monastero with beautiful gardens.

A comparabe Hotel in Varenna would be Hotel Du Lac or, maybe better, Hotel Royal Victoria. Both are near the ferry and not far away from the train station.

So yes, we should choose something convenient.

But..... will the views of Lake Como be as astonishing? And 2 nights enough? We won't use a pool or anything obviously.

Apple Brings Tap to Pay on iPhone to Italy

Tap to Pay on iPhone today launched in Italy , allowing individual sellers, major retailers, and small businesses to use the ‌iPhone‌ as a contactless payment terminal.

Tap to Pay on ‌iPhone‌ is available to payment platforms and payment app developers in Italy. Adyen, myPOS, Nexi, Revolut, Stripe, SumUp, and Viva are all supporting Tap to Pay, and Fabrick, Numia, and Sella will also be adding Tap to Pay integration in the near future. Starting today, Tap to Pay on ‌iPhone‌ can be used in all Apple retail stores in Italy as well.

"Tap to Pay on iPhone has revolutionized the checkout experience in many types of businesses in Europe and other countries, and we are happy to partner with payment platforms to support merchants in Italy by offering them a simple, secure and private way to accept contactless payments via iPhone and a partner-enabled iOS app, without the need for additional devices," said Jennifer Bailey, Vice President of Apple Pay and Apple Wallet at Apple. "Over 4.3 million small and medium-sized companies in Italy have long played a key role in the country's economy and, together with payment platforms, developers and developers of apps and payment networks, we are making it easier than ever for Italian businesses of all sizes to accept contactless payments and continue to grow their business."

When a customer makes a purchase, a merchant that supports Tap to Pay on ‌iPhone‌ can accept payment by having the customer bring their credit card, debit card, prepaid card, ‌iPhone‌, Apple Watch, or other digital wallet close to the merchant's ‌iPhone‌. The transaction is completed through NFC, with processing done using the Secure Element for security purposes.

Tap to Pay on ‌iPhone‌ requires an ‌iPhone‌ XS or newer model, and a contactless card or device also needed. Contactless cards from American Express, Global Discover Network, Diners, Mastercard, and Visa will work.

Italy is the 11th country where Tap to Pay on ‌iPhone‌ is available. Apple previously rolled out the feature in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Japan, the Netherlands, Brazil, France, Taiwan, and Ukraine.

Just in time for my trip! I wonder just how soon many businesses will adopt it, or if they will be notified that it’s available…

I knew this has been coming for what, 2 years? But just seeing my country in a headline made me so happy. Now let’s hope the Vision Pro will come too; I know the rumors don’t point to it, but I remember seeing Italy mentioned among the countries that will get it.
