The Star Trek fictional universe contains a variety of weapons, ranging from missiles to melee. The Star Trek franchise consists primarily of several multi-season television shows and a dozen movies, as well as various video games and inspired merchandise. Many aspects of the fictional universe impact modern popular culture, especially the lingo and the idea of a spacecraft launching space torpedoes and firing lasers, and have had a wide influence in the late 20th to early 21st century. Star Trek is popular enough that its science fiction concepts have even been studied by real scientists, and NASA described its science in relation to the real world as "entertaining combination of real science, imaginary science gathered from lots of earlier stories, and stuff the writers make up week-by-week to give each new episode novelty." For example, NASA noted that the Star Trek "phasers" were a fictional extrapolation of real-life lasers, and compared them to real-life microwave based weapons that have a stunning effect.

Forgotten Trek

Designing the Reliant

Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan would give Trekkers the first Starfleet ship beside the original Enterprise . (Or, more accurately, the Constitution class.) But that wasn’t the original plan.

In early versions of the scrip, the Reliant was a sister ship of the Enterprise . Production Designer Joseph Jennings worried this would make it hard for viewers to distinguish between the two ships during the battle in the Mutara Nebula. “In the dogfight you had to instantly recognize which ship you were looking at, so they had to look different,” he told Star Trek: The Magazine in 2002.

At the same time, you had to make them look like they came from the same culture and had the same technology.

Jennings worked with Lee Cole and Mike Minor to design the new vessel. “It was the first time a new starship had been designed since the Klingon battle cruiser,” he remembered.

She was supposed to be a coastal and geodetic survey ship, like a buoy tender. She would be armed, perhaps, but only lightly. She wasn’t a lion ship like the Enterprise . Also, remember the Enterprise was always supposed to be an exploratory vessel where the armament was secondary. That was even more true for the Reliant . She was supposed to just stick around in the known universe and take care of things that everybody already knew about.

The three came up with a compressed version of the Enterprise .

We had long postulated that the circular saucer said, “This is Starfleet navy,” and it used engines that looked pretty much like those on the Enterprise .

They eliminated the engineering hull and attached the nacelles to an extended saucer section instead.

Upside down

Except the nacelles looked over the saucer in their design. Cole remembered how they ended up underneath.

Harve Bennett, the movie’s producer, was working abroad before they started filming Star Trek II . “We were mailing everything over to him and getting him to approve it and mail it back to us,” Cold told Star Trek: The Magazine , “so we did our first sketch of the ship and mailed them off to him.” Bennett was supposed to sign for approval at the bottom of the sheet.

Reliant concept art

When he got it in the mail, he took it out of the package upside down, I guess, and wrote out on the bottom, “Yes, this looks very good, proceed.” So when we got it back, we realized he’d approved it upside down.

Rather than bother Bennett again, the three decided to make it work that way, and it did. Jennings and Lee added what Minor dubbed a “roll bar” to support the dropped nacelles. Phaser banks were put in this supporting structure.

Two models were built at Industrial Light and Magic. Visual Effects Supervisor Kenneth Ralston told Cinefantastique in 1982,

The ship takes the best of the Enterprise , rearranges it, and adds a few goodies of its own.

In a separate interview with American Cinematographer , he recalled that the model was “perfectly constructed for shooting. It’s light,” he said, “highly detailed, non-reflective and could be easily mounted from all sides for any possible setup.”

Robert Diepenbrock, who worked at ILM at the time, told Forgotten Trek in February 2020 that the large Reliant was built in the same scale as the Enterprise . The small Reliant matched the larger version “in every detail and was used in forced-perspective and wide-effects shots.”

Reliant model

The high quality and scale of the large model allowed it to be reused many times in episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation and Deep Space Nine . It was not until its appearance in the second television series that the class name, Miranda , was confirmed on screen.

It also showed several ships of the type without the “roll bar”. The reason was that the effects crew were unable to make its internal lighting work on time.

An extensive refit was done for the episode “Cause and Effect”. The model was redressed to represent the USS Bozeman of the Soyuz starship class. The modifications were designed by Greg Jein and Mike Okuda but not permanently affixed to the model, allowing it to reappear as the Miranda -class USS Saratoga in the pilot of Deep Space Nine , “Emissary”.

Miranda ships that appeared in later episodes of Deep Space Nine and Voyager were CGI models, also created by ILM.

OK… First of all, you don’t launch phasers; they’re pure energy. I believe the terminology used is “banks”. (You know, if they actually existed.) Secondly, the Reliant was hardly only the second Starfleet vessel to be seen on screen. Numerous vessels were seen on The Original Series , The Animated Series and in The Motion Picture .
Phil, The Original Series and The Motion Picture only showed a few tiny Starfleet ships. Some small support vessels and shuttles. Unless I’m forgetting something? So maybe I should have written “major” ship there, but the Reliant was the first proper starship to be designed since the original Enterprise . Again, unless I forgot one here, in which case – do let me know, please. I’m not including TAS here, which was only recently “canonized”, as you may know. You’re correct about the phasers, by the way, so I’m replacing “launchers” with “banks”. Good catch.
Nick, I like your website. Do you know where the deflector was on the Reliant ?
Matt, I don’t, but you might want to check out this article at Ex Astris Scientia . Scroll down to the section “Ships without deflectors”.
The Reliant was a much more powerful ship than the Enterprise or a Klingon battle cruiser. In addition to standard weapons, it had an enormous weapons pod with two large PHASER CANNONS which could fire fore and aft and two large torpedo launchers which could also fire fore and aft. It had two shuttlebays instead of one. The ship was more compact and more maneuverable. They inadvertently designed a much superior ship to the Enterprise without meaning to.
I think the Reliant was actually designated as a frigate, according the the blueprints. And unless my memory is failing, she’s an Avenger -class Starship.
I have to say someone missed his technical manuals. In the mid 1970s a friend of my dad’s gave me two of the coolest things ever. One was a 12-sheet set of Enterprise blueprints. I wish I still had ’em. The other was a starfleet technical manual. I’m sure you can find a copy out there. The basic design of the Reliant was actually already seen in the “tug” that was shown in one of the sections of that book. I wish I could find a picture but essentially the moment that ship appeared in 1981-2 (? I was 12, I think) I knew where the design had come from, because I’d been looking at it eagerly and even imagined taking apart one of the model kits to create it, for several years. It’s cool but they had to have taken a look at those manuals — I believe Matt Jeffries wrote them back in the early 1970s.
Franz Joseph did both, I believe. Great items.
“In mid 2267 the Lexington led a fleet to Organia that included the USS Enterprise , USS Constitution , eight other unnamed Constitution -class starships, two Miranda -class ships, a few Icarus -class starships and various cargo and support vessels.” (TOS episode: “Errand of Mercy” The Intrepid ( exterior ), Constitution (interior only), and Enterprise (exterior) all appeared on screen in the TOS “Court Martial”. The USS Lexington also appeared in exterior on TOS. Along with the USS Excalibur , Lexington , Hood and Potemkin , in battle simulation, shown in exterior in the TOS episode “The Ultimate Computer”.
There were plenty of other Constitution -class starships featured in The Original Series in addition to the Enterprise .
Constitution -class starships were the only large Starfleet vessels to be featured in The Original Series . Because of budget constraints, they were limited to using stock footage of the Enterprise for other ships, selecting only footage that did not show the hull registry numbers clearly. The only other Starfleet vessel shown in TOS was the shuttlecraft. Again, stock footage of the Galileo was used. The full-size Galileo prop/stage was finally renamed “ Galileo II ” in the third season episode “The Way to Eden”. Even in that episode the Aurora that Dr Sevrin and his colleagues stole was the Tholian Web Spinner redressed with warp nacelles. There were no other starships aside from the Enterprise in “Court Martial”. The remastered TOS episodes gave the production team more liberty to show other vessels as CGI, all of which had their design origins in media other than TOS. I’m talking specifically about TAS, the Starfleet Reference Manual and other (semi-canon) printed material. Nick is quite correct that the Reliant was the first non- Constitution -class starship to be designed and make it to the screen after the Enterprise refit (TMP). It was followed by the Excelsior and the Grissom in Star Trek III . The Enterprise “ring ship” appears as an illustration only in the recreation deck of TMP Enterprise . The only model of that ship to appear on screen is the small desk model briefly shown in Star Trek: Into Darkness . A point worth noting is that recent discussions about the feasibility of FTL travel have posited a design not unlike the ring ship that would “stretch” space in front of the ship and “squash” it behind, creating a wave of accelerated space/time for the ship to travel in. Life imitating art, don’t you think?
I thought we saw the Defiant in TOS…
The USS Defiant appeared in the TOS episode “The Tholian Web”. Stock footage of the Enterprise model was used, overlayed with a green glowing effect. When the episode was remastered, the SFX team had the opportunity to add some close up shots displaying the hull registry (NCC-1764).
Ah, thanks. Very good.
There was also a strike force half a dozen Constitutions in “The Ultimate Computer”.
When they feature a distressed Constitution -class ship in the doomsday device episode, they used an off-the-shelf, sold in hobby shops, plastic model kit of the Enterprise and mashed it up with battle damage. In later shows they used store bought kits for background ships.
Quite correct John, that was an off-the-shelf AMT 18″ USS Enterprise kit. Desilu and Paramount/CBS had a good relationship with AMT, the company that created the models. They had previously struck a deal on the licensing for the kits. AMT manufactured the full-size mockup of the Galileo in return for the rights to produce Star Trek -related model kits. The same molds have been in use (with some retooling in the case of the Enterprise ) for nearly as long as the series has been around. Not bad for subject matter that is still considered a niche market in the hobby kit industry.

Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan

Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan

  • With the assistance of the Enterprise crew, Admiral Kirk must stop an old nemesis, Khan Noonien Singh, from using the life-generating Genesis Device as the ultimate weapon.
  • It is the 23rd century. Admiral James T. Kirk is an instructor at Starfleet Academy and feeling old; the prospect of attending his ship, the USS Enterprise--now a training ship--on a two-week cadet cruise does not make him feel any younger. But the training cruise becomes a deadly serious mission when his nemesis Khan Noonien Singh--infamous conqueror from late 20th century Earth--appears after years of exile. Khan later revealed that the planet Ceti Alpha VI exploded, and shifted the orbit of the fifth planet as a Mars-like haven. He begins capturing Project Genesis, a top secret device holding the power of creation itself, and schemes the utter destruction of Kirk. — Gregory A. Sheets <[email protected]>
  • It is the 23rd century. The Federation starship USS Enterprise is on routine training maneuvers, and Admiral James T. Kirk seems resigned to the fact that this may well be the last space mission of his career. But Khan Noonien Singh is back. Aided by his exiled band of genetic supermen, Khan--infamous conqueror from late 20th century Earth--has raided Space Station Regula One, stolen a top secret device called Project Genesis, wrested control of another Federation starship, and now schemes to set a most deadly trap for his old enemy Kirk... with the threat of a universal Armageddon! — Robert Lynch <[email protected]>
  • In the year 2285, Admiral James T. Kirk (William Shatner) oversees a simulator session of Captain Spock's (Leonard Nimoy) trainees. In the simulation, Lieutenant Saavik commands the star ship USS Enterprise on a rescue mission to save the crew of the damaged ship Kobayashi Maru. When the Enterprise enters the Klingon Neutral Zone to reach the ship it is attacked by Klingon cruisers and critically damaged. The simulation is a no-win scenario designed to test the character of Starfleet officers. Later, Dr. McCoy (DeForest Kelley) joins Kirk on his birthday; seeing Kirk in low spirits, the doctor advises Kirk to get a new command and not grow old behind a desk. Meanwhile, the USS Reliant is on a mission to search for a lifeless planet for testing of the Genesis Device, a technology designed to reorganize matter to create habitable worlds for colonization. Reliant officers Commander Pavel Chekov and Captain Clark Terrell beam down to the surface of a possible candidate planet, which they believe to be Ceti Alpha VI; once there, they are captured by genetically engineered tyrant Khan Noonien Singh (Ricardo Montalbán). The Enterprise discovered Khan's ship adrift in space 15 years previously; Kirk exiled Khan and his fellow supermen from 20th-century Earth to Ceti Alpha V after they attempted to take over the Enterprise. After they were marooned, Ceti Alpha VI exploded, shifting the orbit of Ceti Alpha V and destroying its ecosystem. Khan blames Kirk for the death of his wife and plans revenge. He implants Chekov (Walter Koenig) and Terrell (Paul Winfield) with indigenous creatures that enter the ears of their victims and render them susceptible to mind control and uses the officers to capture the Reliant. Learning of Genesis, Khan attacks space station Regula I where the device is being developed by Kirk's former lover, Dr. Carol Marcus, and their son, David. The Enterprise embarks on a three-week training voyage. Kirk assumes command after the ship receives a distress call from Regula I. En route, the Enterprise is ambushed and crippled by the Reliant, leading to the deaths and injuries of many trainees. Khan hails the Enterprise and offers to spare Kirk's crew if they relinquish all material related to Genesis. Kirk stalls for time and uses the Reliant's prefix code to remotely lower its shields, allowing the Enterprise to counterattack. Khan is forced to retreat and effect repairs, while the Enterprise limps to Regula I. Kirk, McCoy, and Saavik beam to the station and find Terrell and Chekov alive (who feign innocence and say that they did not help Khan. They also tell Kirk that Khan tortured the station crew but could not get hold of Genesis as Dr Marcus and David were nowhere to be found. The data banks were empty as well), along with slaughtered members of Marcus's team. They soon find Carol and David hiding deep inside the Planetoid of Regula. Khan, having used Terrell and Chekov as spies, orders them to kill Kirk; Terrell resists the eel's influence and kills himself while Chekov collapses as the eel leaves his body. Khan then transports Genesis aboard the Reliant. Though Khan believes his foe stranded on Regula I, Kirk and Spock use a coded message to arrange a rendezvous. Kirk directs the Enterprise into the nearby Mutara Nebula; static discharges inside the nebula render shields useless and compromise targeting systems, making the Enterprise and the Reliant evenly matched. Spock notes however that Khan's tactics are two-dimensional, indicating inexperience in space combat, which Kirk then exploits to critically disable the Reliant. Mortally wounded, Khan activates Genesis, which will reorganize all matter in the nebula, including the Enterprise. Though Kirk's crew detects the activation of Genesis and attempts to move out of range, they will not be able to escape the nebula in time due to the ship's damaged warp drive. Spock goes to the engine room to restore the warp drive. When McCoy tries to prevent Spock's entry, as exposure to the high levels of radiation would be fatal, Spock incapacitates the doctor with a Vulcan nerve pinch and performs a mind meld, telling him to "remember". Spock successfully restores power to the warp drive and the Enterprise escapes the explosion, though at the cost of his life. The explosion of Genesis causes the gas in the nebula to reform into a new planet, capable of sustaining life. After being alerted by McCoy, Kirk arrives in the engine room and discovers Spock dying of radiation poisoning. The two share a meaningful exchange in which Spock urges Kirk not to grieve, as his decision to sacrifice his own life to save those of the ship's crew is a logical one, before succumbing to his injuries. A space burial is held in the Enterprise's torpedo room and Spock's coffin is shot into orbit around the new planet. The crew leaves to pick up the Reliant's marooned crew from Ceti Alpha V. Spock's coffin, having soft-landed, rests on the Genesis planet's surface.

Ships of the Line, Book II -- Bigger, Faster, Stronger

star trek 2 ships

Gene Roddenberry - "The Starship Enterprise is not a collection of motion picture sets or a model used in visual effects. It is a very real vehicle; one designed for storytelling. You, the audience furnish its propulsion. With a wondrous leap of imagination, you make it into a spaceship that can take us into the far reaches of the Galaxy and sometimes even the depths of the human soul..."

star trek 2 ships

Doug Drexler - The "Ships of the Line" calendar celebrates mankind's perpetual need to explore the Universe... and ourselves. Over the thirteen years of its publication, we have showcased space artists who are possessed with an understanding of the Starfleet design ethic that would give Leah Brahms hot flashes, Geordi La Forge an inferiority complex, and cause Scotty to wet his pants.

Through its pages, we’ve shared incredible vistas, marveled at awe-inspiring starships, celebrated the infinite diversity of the Universe... And the excitement has not faded.

star trek 2 ships

The Starship Enterprise continues to inspire and look believable 50 years after its conception. Matt Jefferies' original Enterprise design has spun off nearly a dozen re-stylings, not to mention the probably hundreds, if not thousands, of fan interpretations. It was, and remains, an act of artistic genius still hurtling forward of its original inertia, a fountainhead piece of futuristic architecture which will continue to inspire and entertain for many, many years to come. A stunning accomplishment for any Hollywood designer.

Apparently, we still can't get enough of it. It’s hard to pinpoint precisely what it is that makes the erstwhile saucer/nacelle configuration so endlessly fascinating. Could it be the embodiment of humankind at its best, the genetic need to explore the unknown, to push that upper right hand corner of the envelope... and in doing so, discover what it means to be human?

I've been privileged to helm "Ships of the Line" for a solid decade. What has made it a success? Naturally, it is that indefinable magic and power of Star Trek , but what keeps it fresh is the excitement generated by people who are passionate. It's never a job.

I never tell a "Ships" artist what I want. For me, that's boring. I want to see what excites them. My job is the big picture... the rhythm of the presentation, maintaining the Trek aesthetic, and not violating its continuity. To many Trek fans, Star Trek 's history is as immutable as... well... history. I believe that’s key to its longevity, and the steadfastness of its core fans.

We also have a history of bringing enthusiastic fans to the calendar staff, some of whom I've even drafted onto Hollywood projects. "Deg," Douglas E. Graves, was a fan I met on the Internet. I saw his F-105, "Tomorrow is Yesterday." Now he lives in North Hollywood, and was one of our key modelers on Galactica. He is currently with us on Defiance . So listen up:  I'll look at anyone's work for submission. I've heard peeps on the Internet say it's a closed club. Nope. Don't you believe it. Not a bit. So bring it.

Michael Okuda -

I've always loved the "Ships of the Line" calendars.  First of all, as a space geek and a Star Trek fan, it's great to see all those beautiful starships. Such incredible artistry and skill, and so many different interpretations by so many different artists. I love that some of the images are exacting re-creations of familiar television and movie scenes. I love that others are fascinating moments from adventures of that I wish I could have seen. And I love that some go even further, inventing all-new ships that were never on the screen. When Margaret Clark called and asked if I'd like to be a part of a collection of these images, my first impulse was to say "YES!!!!"  I asked her what she wanted the text to be.

Margaret, who always encourages her writers and designers to stretch their imaginations, said something like, "Whatever you want." I thought about it for a moment. Writing about Star Trek ships is always tricky. Fans know a LOT about these ships, and while many folks enjoy a bit of extrapolation, they'll also know if something is just padded with meaningless statistics and labels. I told her I'd think on it for a bit. Then it came to me. Stats and technical specs are cool, but they're not the reason that these magnificent starships fire our imaginations. It's that each is part of a great human adventure. (Or Vulcan adventure. Or whatever. You know what I mean.)

I called Margaret and asked her if I could do something very simple. I said something like: "Imagine that each image is the cover painting for a Star Trek novel. Now, imagine a single paragraph from that novel, the one that would have inspired the artist to create that image. I want to write those paragraphs." There was silence on the other end of the phone. Oh no. I thought, this was not what she wanted, not at all. Actually, it probably wasn't. But Margaret thought about it for a bit and said, "Go for it!"

star trek 2 ships

Doug Drexler - Most of you guys know me and Mike, but only the hippest realize how many important Trek books had Margaret driving them forward. She is a huge fan, and knows Trek inside and out. She also has bull’s-eye intuition about what makes cool Star Trek . Margaret has incredible drive... after all, she is a New Yorker. I'm a transplanted New Yorker myself, so when Margaret would call me in L.A., the intensity of the Apple always came pouring through. I loved that. It always made me comfortable. I could hear the buses, sirens and cars honking. We could have been in the corner Greek diner at 51st and 7th.

I remember when we were doing the DS9 Tech Manual . The first pass on the layout was all wrong. Margaret called and said, "You and I are going to re-layout this book over the phone right now." I thought she was kidding. Nope. And we did. Page by page. It took a few days. The point is that she is unstoppable. A force of nature. It's been a great collaboration, especially with Mike and Denise (Okuda) in the mix. Talk about a powerhouse of peeps who know how to move forward.

Margaret Clark -

As an editor who had just been downsized from DC, this was 1995. (Oh, one of the things I was editing was TOS and TNG comics.) I was hired freelance to pull photos for calendars, the revised Chronology and Encyclopedia for Pocket Books. I’d look for, and pull photos that I knew would print, well… well.

I “met” Doug when I would call to talk to Mike and ask for his feedback on the images I had pulled for the Chronology and the Encyclopedia. I’d hear, “Art Department.” Most times it would be Doug, and we’d talk about everything and anything, even the Good Steer ( A beloved restaurant Margaret and I both went to as kids, out on Long Island - Doug ), while I waited for Mike to pick up.

After two months, I was hired as an assistant editor. I had an understanding of four-color printing, more than a book editor. I offered Pocket Books a way to do more four-color book for less. And I knew Star Trek and the fans, as I am one.

I always thought the best part was working on the ship shots. They struck a chord with me. As a Long Island kid, I was very proud of Grumman and “our part” in space exploration. I’d love when someone’s dad would come to school and show us the art that had been created as part of the bid to work for NASA.

The starships are the way that our heroes get to the final frontier, and the below-the-line artists are how those ships become real. I kept trying to see if there was a way I could do a book of what is called “space art” created by the people who worked on Star Trek . Mojo brought me the idea of a "Ships of the Line" calendar, and I convinced Pocket that the odd format, horizontal and a very small month grid, would sell. They agreed to a one-time calendar, but I knew Trek fans would love it. Over a decade later, they still do.

Doug Drexler –

When Mike Westmore piped me aboard the Enterprise D as a makeup artist, I got my first close-up look at those classiest of starship sets. Buddy, I was like a kid in a candy store, free to wander the 23rd century and marvel at the magnificent designs and incredible craftsmanship that went into even the smallest detail.

Later, when Mike Okuda helped me make the jump from the Makeup Department to the rarefied air of the Art Department... that place where starships were born... not only would I would be privy to this wonderful world of science, art, and imagination, but I would become a part of it, working hand in hand with people that I idolized. I would be wowed by not only their incredible talent and skill, but also by the unique characters and personalities that drove the Trek design juggernaut, and their dedication to Gene Roddenberry's early mandate of believability. Therefore, it is fitting that we dedicate this edition of "The Ships of the Line" to that special place where dreams and imagination take flight: the Star Trek Art Department. Home sweet home.

Thank you Mike, and Margaret, for being two of the best peeps I've ever worked with. "Workmate" does not do you justice. You are my two dear friends. We've traveled the Cosmos together.

One more thing. It should be noted that the "Ships of the Line" calendar is a descendant of the great space artists of the 50s, and 60s. Guys like Bonestell, McCall and Freeman. Before we had space probes crawling over Mars, and landing on asteroids, it was the space artists who took us there, and undoubtedly had more than a little to do with inspiring us to make the trip. In our own small way, "Ships of the Line" -- the calendars and the books -- are part of that lineage. Space artists drive the future of humankind beyond our planet. The reality begins with a dream. Although most of us will probably not plant foot upon the red planet, I'm happy in the knowledge that we probably will have had a hand in goading some kid into doing it.

Ships Of The Line: Active Duty!

A few years back, for my blog The Drexfiles, I got this wacky idea. We had these great print pages as CG files. It wouldn't take much to give them a nudge, and set them in motion. So a bunch of us did, and it was a big hit. In celebration of the the "Ships Of The Line Book II," I did a bit of archeology, found the original files, and re-output Active Duty! at a higher resolution... even added a couple of new ones. I hope you relish it as much as I : ) - Doug

Special Weapons:

  • Clairvoyance If adapted to use clairvoyance, the Scout is able to probe the minds of crewmen aboard nearby vessels, and see what they see while the special energy lasts. This special weapon is particularly effective during the early stages of exploration as the scout ship can map areas of space without having to venture there. It is also useful to determine the size of an attacking fleet before they reach your sensor range. Cloaked ships are immune to clairvoyance.
  • Tachyon Detection Grid Scouts can have their sensor arrays modified to use a Tachyon Detection Grid, allowing them to detect cloaked ships within their sensor range.

  • Special Weapon: Clairvoyant Link When equipped to use Clairvoyant Link, the Destroyer can create and maintain a psionic lock on a target ship, tracking them through space and gathering information through their sensors. A ship can track only a single vessel at a time. Clairvoyant Link can be especially effective when attempting to locate the enemy's starbase -- damaging an enemy ship and then using the link to track them back to their shipyard as they attempt to get repairs.

  • Special Weapon: Psionic Disruption The Cruiser can be modified to use psionic disruption, a weapon that renders its target incapable of immediate action. Movement and offensive actions are delayed or even halted while the weapon is in effect.

  • Special Weapon: Psionic Insanity Battleships outfitted with this special weapon are able to release a wave that makes all non-Species 8472 ships unable to determine who their enemy actually is. The effected ship will fire randomly at nearby targets throughout the duration of the effect. In certain situations, ship captains have been known to initiate their ship's self-destruct sequence, thinking the situation hopeless.

  • Special Weapon: Bio-Pulse Conduit When grouped with four to eight operational Battleships , the Bio-Pulse Conduit becomes an effective super-weapon. When the order is given to activate the bio-pulse conduit, the supporting Battleships form a ring around and slightly behind the Frigate . As each Battlesip fires its primary weapon at the aft of the Frigate , the energy is redirected into an immensely powerful Bio-Pulse Beam that is capable of destroying even the most powerful enemy ships.

star trek 2 ships

  • Nebula Generation This special weapon allows the Behemoth to create a special fluidic nebula by excreting matter from pores that form a ring around the ships body. It is a time consuming process, but when complete, there will remain a diffuse mass of interstellar dust and gas. The nebula prevents other races from building within its boundries, and it creates warp inhibitor fields that prevent ships from using warp. The generated nebula decays over time and will eventually collapse.
  • Nebula Flux When fired into a nubula, this weapon causes a destructive reaction that spreads from the center of the nebula to its outer reaches. The amount of damage is dependent on the type of nebula. The targeted nebula remains behind afterwards and operates as it always did.
  • Transient Rift This special weapon allows a Behemoth to travel to any explored point on the map by opening a temporary rift to Fluidic Space. Two rifts are created, one at the source and one at the destination point. This allows travel between the two points.

  • Special Weapon: Resource Extraction Beam Similar to the mining beam seen on mining ships of other races, the Resource Extraction Beam reaches out for a nearby vessel and begins draining it of resources, breaking it down into component parts.

Star Trek: Discovery Never Showed The 32nd Centurys USS Enterprise

Warning: SPOILERS for Star Trek: Discovery Season 5

  • Star Trek: Discovery missed the chance to showcase the 32nd-century USS Enterprise, leaving fans eager for a glimpse of the iconic ship's modern look.
  • Despite not featuring the 32nd-century version, the show paid homage to the Enterprise through references and an appearance in the Mirror Universe.
  • While some Enterprise sightings were included, fans hope for a future reveal in the upcoming spinoff Star Trek: Starfleet Academy.

Star Trek: Discovery ended without showing the 32nd-century version of Star Trek's most iconic ship — the USS Enterprise. Since its introduction in Star Trek: The Original Series, the Starship Enterprise has become one of the most recognizable spaceships in popular culture. Over the years, there have been many incarnations of the Enterprise, and the ship remains a fixture of Star Trek even today. Under the command of Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount), the USS Enterprise of the 23rd century serves as the centerpiece of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, with a stunning upgrade for modern-day television.

The adventures of Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and the USS Discovery came to an end with Star Trek: Discovery's fifth season, as Burnham and her crew secured the powerful Progenitors' technology. Star Trek: Discovery season 5 contained more references to past Trek than any other season but still didn't offer a glimpse of the 32nd-century Starship Enterprise. Not only did Discovery introduce one of Star Trek's most unique ships, but it also set the standard for modern Star Trek Starship design. Strange New Worlds continues the legacy of ships named Enterprise , but it would have been cool to see the 32nd-century redesign of the ship.

Star Trek: Discovery Proved Burnhams Starship Is Better Than USS EnterpriseIn 1 Big Way

Star Trek: Discovery's eponymous starship made history in the series finale, besting every known version of the famed USS Enterprise.

Star Trek: Discovery Ended Without Ever Showing The 32nd Centurys USS Enterprise

Could the enterprise pop up on star trek: starfleet academy.

In Star Trek: Discovery season 4, episode 6, "Stormy Weather," Mr. Saru (Doug Jones) mentions the Enterprise as the USS Discovery is investigating a subspace rift. Saru remarks that the Enterprise had encountered a similar subspace rift and "noted heated plasma." While this could refer to a past iteration of the Enterprise, it could just as easily refer to the 32nd-century version of the ship. The USS Voyager-J remains in service during the 32nd century, so it's safe to assume that a ship bearing the name Enterprise also continues to serve Starfleet.

The USS Enterprise was a significant fixture in Star Trek: Discovery season 2.

Perhaps producers feared that an appearance by the USS Enterprise would overshadow Discovery, but it would have been nice to see the 32nd-century upgrades that have been made to the iconic ship. Considering its history as the Federation's flagship, the Enterprise has always been one of the most important ships in Starfleet. It would be surprising if the Enterprise wasn't just as important in the Starfleet of the far future. With Discovery's upcoming spinoff, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy , on the horizon, Star Trek still has the opportunity to show the Enterprise of the 32nd century and reveal its current Captain.

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Still Had Enterprise Sightings & Mentions

Discovery couldn't end without a glimpse of at least one ship named enterprise..

Although the 32nd-century version of the Starship Enterprise never makes an appearance, Star Trek: Discovery season 5 includes several other references to the ship. Discovery's search for the Progenitors' technology begins with a discussion about Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) and the adventure on the USS Enterprise-D that made him aware of the Progenitors in the first place. The mysterious Dr. Kovich (David Cronenberg) also refers to himself as from the USS Enterprise when he admits to Captain Burnham that he's really temporal agent Daniels from Captain Jonathan Archer's (Scott Bakula) Enterprise NX-01.

Star Trek: Discovery may not have revealed the 32nd-century Enterprise, but the show couldn't end without a glimpse of at least one version of Star Trek's most famous ship.

The most substantial shout-out to the Enterprise comes in Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 5, "Mirrors," when the 23rd-century ISS Enterprise makes a surprise appearance, having traveled from the Mirror Universe. When Captain Burnham and Cleveland Booker (David Ajala) enter a pocket of interdimensional space in search of the Progenitors' third clue, they encounter the derelict ISS Enterprise. A plaque on the ship reveals that the crew had escaped from the brutal Mirror Universe with the help of the Mirror Universe version of Saru. Star Trek: Discovery may not have revealed the 32nd-century Enterprise, but the show couldn't end without a glimpse of at least one version of Star Trek's most famous ship.

SPOILER WARNING: This story includes descriptions of major plot developments on the series finale of “ Star Trek : Discovery,” currently streaming on Paramount+ .

Watching the fifth and final season of “ Star Trek: Discovery ” has been an exercise in the uncanny. Paramount+ didn’t announce that the show was ending until after the Season 5 finale had wrapped filming — no one involved with the show knew it would be its concluding voyage when they were making it. And yet, the season has unfolded with a pervasive feeling of culmination.

“I think there’s more to it than just, ‘Oh, it was a coinkydink!’” the actor says with a laugh, before explaining that she’s thinking more about subtext than direct intent. “I’ve gotta give Michelle her flowers. She has always asked the deeper questions of this story and these characters. Those questions of meaning and purpose led to questions of origin and legacy, and, yes, that is quite culminating.”

Martin-Green and Paradise spoke exclusively with Variety about filming the finale and the coda, including the surprising revelation about the origins of one of “Discovery’s” most memorable characters and what Paradise’s plans for Season 6 would have been.

“It’s the Most Complicated Thing I’ve Ever Seen”

Once the “Discovery” writers’ room decided the season would be organized around a search for the Progenitor’s technology, they also knew that, eventually, Burnham would find it. So then they had to figure out what it would be.

“That was a discussion that evolved over the course of weeks and months,” Paradise says. Rather than focus on communicating the intricate details of how the technology works, they turned their attention to delivering a visual experience commensurate with the enormity and complexity of something that could seed life across the entire galaxy.

“We wanted a sense of a smaller exterior and an infinite interior to help with that sense of power greater than us,” Paradise says. Inspired in part by a drawing by MC Escher, the production created an environment surrounded by towering windows into a seemingly endless procession of alien planets, in which it’s just as easy to walk on the walls as on the floor. That made for a daunting challenge for the show’s producing director, Olatunde “Tunde” Osunsanmi: As Burnham battles with the season’s main antagonist, Mol (Eve Harlow), inside this volume, they fall through different windows into another world, and the laws of gravity keep shifting between their feet.

“It’s the most complicated thing I’ve ever seen, directorially,” Paradise says. “Tunde had a map, in terms of: What did the background look like? And when the cameras this way, what’s over there? It was it was incredibly complex to design and shoot.”

Two of those planets — one in perpetual darkness and rainstorms, another consumed by constant fire — were shot on different parking areas on the Pinewood Toronto studio lot.

“The fire planet was so bright that the fire department got called from someone who had seen the fire,” Paradise says. “It should not be possible to pull those kinds of things off in a television show, even on a bigger budget show, with the time limitations that you have. And yet, every episode of every season, we’re still coming in on time and on budget. The rain planet and the fire planet we shot, I believe, one day after the other.”

Martin-Green jumps in: “Michelle, I think that was actually the same day!”

“It Felt Lifted”

The last time a “Star Trek” captain talked to a being that could be (erroneously) considered God, it was William Shatner’s James T. Kirk in 1989’s “Star Trek: The Final Frontier.” The encounter did not go well.

“I had my own journey with the central storyline of Season 5, just as a believer,” Martin-Green says. “I felt a similar way that Burnham did. They’re in this sort of liminal mind space, and it almost felt that way to me. It felt lifted. It really did feel like she and I were the only two people in this moment.”

It’s in this conversation that Burnham learns that while the Progenitors did create all “humanoid” alien species in the galaxy in their image, they did not create the technology that allowed them to do so. They found it, fully formed, created by beings utterly unknown to them. The revelation was something that Martin-Green discussed with Paradise early on in the planning of Season 5, allowing “Discovery” to leave perhaps the most profound question one could ask — what, or who, came first in the cosmos? — unanswered.

“The progenitor is not be the be all end all of it,” Paradise says. “We’re not saying this is God with a capital ‘G.’”

“There’s Just This Air of Mystery About Him”

Starting on Season 3 of “Discovery,” renowned filmmaker David Cronenberg began moonlighting in a recurring role as Dr. Kovich, a shadowy Federation operative whose backstory has been heretofore undisclosed on the show.

“I love the way he plays Kovich,” Paradise says of Cronenberg. “There’s just this air of mystery about him. We’ve always wanted to know more.” When planning Season 5, one of the writers pitched revealing Kovich’s true identity in the (then-season) finale by harkening back to the “Star Trek” show that preceded “Discovery”: “Enterprise,” which ran on UPN from 2001 to 2005.

In the final episode, when Burnham debriefs her experiences with Kovich, she presses him to tell her who he really is. He reintroduces himself as Agent Daniels, a character first introduced on “Enterprise” as a young man (played by Matt Winston) and a Federation operative in the temporal cold war.

This is, to be sure, a deep cut even for “Star Trek” fans. (Neither Cronenberg nor Martin-Green, for example, understood the reference.) But Paradise says they were laying the groundwork for the reveal from the beginning of the season. “If you watch Season 5 with that in mind, you can see the a little things that we’ve played with along the way,” she says, including Kovich/Daniels’ penchant for anachonistic throwbacks like real paper and neckties.

“I didn’t know that that was going be there,” Martin-Green says. “My whole childhood came back to me.”

“We Always Knew That We Wanted to Somehow Tie That Back Up”

Originally, Season 5 of “Discovery” ends with Burnham and Book talking on the beach outside the wedding of Saru (Doug Jones) and T’Rina (Tara Rosling) before transporting away to their next adventure. But Paradise understood that the episode needed something more conclusive once it became the series finale. The question was what.

There were some significant guardrails around what they could accomplish. The production team had only eight weeks from when Paramout+ and CBS Studios signed off on the epilogue to when they had to shoot it. Fortunately, the bridge set hadn’t been struck yet (though several standing sets already had been). And the budget allowed only for three days of production.

Then there was “Calypso.”

To fill up the long stretches between the first three seasons of “Discovery,” CBS Studios and Paramount+ greenlit a series of 10 stand-alone episodes, dubbed “Short Treks,” that covered a wide variety of storylines and topics. The second “Short Trek” — titled “Calypso” and co-written by novelist Michael Chabon — first streamed between Season 1 and 2 in November 2018. It focuses on a single character named Craft (Aldis Hodge), who is rescued by the USS Discovery after the starship — and its now-sentient computer system, Zora (Annabelle Wallis) — has sat totally vacant for 1,000 years in the same fixed point in space. How the Discovery got there, and why it was empty for so long, were left to the viewer’s imagination.

Still, for a show that had only just started its run, “Calypso” had already made a bold promise for “Discovery’s” endgame — one the producers had every intention of keeping.

“We always knew that we wanted to somehow tie that back up,” says Paradise, who joined the writers’ room in Season 2, and became showrunner starting with Season 3. “We never wanted ‘Calypso’ to be the dangling Chad.”

So much so, in fact, that, as the show began winding down production on Season 5, Paradise had started planning to make “Calypso” the central narrative engine for Season 6.

“The story, nascent as it was, was eventually going to be tying that thread up and connecting ‘Discovery’ back with ‘Calypso,’” she says.

Once having a sixth season was no longer an option, Paradise knew that resolving the “Calypso” question was non-negotiable. “OK, well, we’re not going to have a season to do that,” she says. “So how do we do that elegantly in this very short period of time?”

“I Feel Like It Ends the Way It Needed to End”

Resolving “Calypso” provided the storytelling foundation for the epilogue, but everything else was about giving its characters one final goodbye.

“We want to know what’s happening to Burnham, first and foremost,” Paradise says. “And we knew we wanted to see the cast again.”

For the latter, Paradise and Jarrow devised a conceit that an older Burnham, seated in the captain’s chair on Discovery, imagines herself surrounded by her crew 30 years prior, so she (and the audience) could connect with them one final time. For the former, the makeup team designed prosthetics to age up Martin-Green and Ajala by 30 years — “I think they were tested as they were running on to the set,” Paradise says with a laugh — to illustrate Burnham and Book’s long and happy marriage together.

Most crucially, Paradise cut a few lines of Burnham’s dialogue with Book from the original Season 5 finale and moved it to a conversation she has with her son in the coda. The scene — which evokes the episode’s title, “Life Itself” — serves as both a culminating statement of purpose for “Discovery” and the overarching compassion and humanity of “Star Trek” as a whole.

To reassure her son about his first command of a starship, Burnham recalls when the ancient Progenitor asked what was most meaningful to her. “Do you know how you would answer that question now?” he asks.

“Yeah, just being here,” Burnham replies. “You know, sometimes life itself is meaning enough, how we choose to spend the time that we have, who we spend it with: You, Book, and the family I found in Starfleet, on Discovery.”

Martin-Green relished the opportunity to revisit the character she’s played for seven years when she’s reached the pinnacle of her life and career. “You just get to see this manifestation of legacy in this beautiful way,” she says. “I will also say that I look a lot like my mom, and that was that was also a gift, to be able to see her.”

Shooting the goodbye with the rest of her cast was emotional, unsurprisingly, but it led Martin-Green to an unexpected understanding. “It actually was so charged that it was probably easier that it was only those three days that we knew it was the end, and not the entirety of season,” she says.

Similarly, Paradise says she’s “not sure” what more she would’ve done had there been more time to shoot the coda. “I truly don’t feel like we missed out on something by not having one more day,” she says. “I feel like it ends the way it needed to end.”

Still, getting everything done in just three days was no small feat, either. “I mean, we worked ’round the clock,” Martin-Green says with a deep laugh. “We were delirious by the end — but man, what a way to end it.”

Discovery Showrunner Explains How the Finale's Surprising Twists Fit Trek Canon

Back to the future.

Burnham finds herself among the technology that the Progenitors found in the series finale of 'Star ...

The age of Discovery has come to an end. With “Life, Itself,” the first Star Trek show of the streaming era has concluded its Season 5 storyline and wrapped up two major mysteries, one of which has been floating around since 2018. Discovery’s emotional ending likely wasn’t what fans expected, and the final coda features a leap that reveals not just the end of the starship’s voyages, but that teases a legacy for Burnham and Book that could have big implications for the Trek timeline.

To sort it all out, Inverse caught up with Discovery showrunner Michelle Paradise to figure out what went into devising the series’ final moments, and how it all ties into a specific Trek mystery while also connecting to a different prequel show from almost two decades ago. Spoilers ahead.

Discovery’s original ending

Burnham, T'Rina, and Saru, in the first ending of 'Star Trek: Discovery.'

Discovery Season 5 originally ended with T’Rina and Saru’s wedding before it had to jump 30 years forward.

Discovery’s final episode seems to have two endings. After the entire Breen conflict is resolved and Burnham confers with Kovich (David Cronenberg), the episode seems to come to a serene end with Saru (Doug Jones) and T’Rina’s (Tara Rosling) beachy wedding. As guests mingle, Book (David Ajala ) shows up late and reconciles with Michael.

“That was it. It was the scene on the beach where Burnham and Book walk off and the camera sort of pans up,” Michelle Paradise tells Inverse. “That was the original ending.”

Had Season 6 been in the works, Discovery Season 5 would have ended in the present tense of the show (3191) with Saru and T’rina’s wedding. Although Discovery Season 5 wrapped production in November 2022, it wasn’t until April 2023 that a coda was developed to conclude the entire series. “We were editing episodes 8 and 9, I think, when we found out that this would be our last season,” Paradise says. “Everything starting from the pan up, that’s the new stuff.”

The flash-forward timeline

The final coda of 'Star Trek: Discovery,' Book, Burnham and their son, Leto.

Leto, Burnham, and Book, 30 years in the future.

Discovery’s real ending jumps forward several decades. Burnham and Book have distinguished streaks of gray hair, Burnham is referred to as Admiral, and they have a grown son named Leto, named after Book’s deceased brother.

“It’s 30 years later,” Michelle Paradise confirms, which means the Discovery coda takes place around 3221. This also means Discovery’s final moments are set in yet another new century. The crew initially jumped from the 23rd century to the 32nd, and now Burnham takes the USS Discovery on one last mission early in the 33rd century. In doing so, Discovery creates more future-tense Trek canon that other new Trek shows may have to deal with.

“We were nervous, but not because of [creating new canon],” Paradise says. “It was really about how we wrap up a series when we have essentially 10 to 12 pages and three days to shoot it. It was about making sure we did justice to the characters and bring emotional closure for the audience.”

The Enterprise connection

David Cronenberg as Kovich, who is really "Daniels."

David Cronenberg as Kovich, who’s revealed to be someone else entirely.

Just before the new material, Michael Burnham unravels a secret that Discovery has been keeping since Season 3. Just who is David Cronenberg’s cryptic character, Kovich ? Burnham learns that Kovich is a codename and that his real identity is Agent Daniels. Daniels mentions he served on the USS Enterprise ; for those who don’t remember, Daniels was a temporal agent from the 31st century who, in the prequel series Enterprise , often traveled back to the 22nd century to assist the crew. At the time, Daniels was trying to stop other factions from rewriting history. In the 32nd-century context of Discovery, we’ve been told that temporal accords made time travel illegal.

Paradise explains that the writers’ room had planned to reveal that Kovich was Daniels for a while. “I think it was back in Season 4 we kind of decided that was where we were going with him,” she says. “If you rewatch season five, you'll see there are tiny little Easter eggs. He's writing with a pen and paper, which is very weird for the future when they’ve all got holograms. He’s a bit out of time.”

Discovery’s final destination explained

Admiral Burnham commands the USS Discovery, one last time in the series finale of 'Star Trek: Discov...

Admiral Burnham takes the USS Discovery — and its benevolent AI, Zora — on one last ride.

Discovery’s last bit of housekeeping was reconciling a strange bit of canon introduced in the 2018 Short Treks episode “Calypso.” That short depicted the USS Discovery adrift and empty, with only a friendly, sentient AI named Zora (Annabelle Wallis) aboard. In this distant future, a human named Craft (Aldis Hodge) boards the ship and has a romance with Zora, who projects herself as a hologram.

Ever since “Calypso” aired, fans have wondered whether it took place in an alternate future, or if it would ever fit with the 32nd-century timeframe Discovery eventually arrived in. While we saw Zora’s sentience emerge after “Calypso,” the episode’s questions remained unanswered .

“I dodged those questions for years!” Paradise says. “But it felt like we needed to tie it back to ‘Calypso’ for people who had seen the short. But we also wanted to do it in such a way that if people hadn’t seen the short, they wouldn’t be like, ‘What are they talking about?’”

In the end, Discovery is sent on a top-secret “Red Directive” mission, which requires Zora to have her fateful meeting with Craft at some point in the future. Even Burnham doesn’t know why, but if Discovery doesn’t meet Craft, then something about the timeline won’t be quite right. Paradise says these scenes were created to emphasize character, rather than connecting dots for the sake of it. We see Discovery end up where it's supposed to end up, but the why had to remain a secret to preserve the moment’s emotional integrity.

“We felt it was important to answer the question — what happened to one of the main characters, the ship itself,” Paradise says. “Ultimately, any version of that where we went into plot started to take away from the emotional experience. And ultimately why they had to go out there didn't feel as important as the fact that Burnham’s going to be the one to take the ship out. One last time.”

Update 55 – Voyager Part 2

By Star Trek 6 June 2023

star trek 2 ships

Greetings, Commanders, and welcome to Star Trek Fleet Command Update 55, Voyager Part 2. In this update, we will be highlighting the following new release: – New ship, the Intrepid Class USS Voyager – A new damage type: Isolytic Damage – New regions of the uncovered Delta Quadrant Space – New officers – And more

New Ship: Voyager

The USS Voyager is an iconic ship that is thrust into an unknown section of space known as the Delta Quadrant, embarking on a journey with one goal, to get home. In Star Trek Fleet Command, the USS Voyager comes equipped with an impulse speed rivaling the Vi’Dar and the fastest warp speed in the game. Its passive ship ability, “Feels Like Home,” deals extra damage to hostiles marked with the “DQ” tag in Delta Quadrant space. The Voyager also comes equipped with 2 brand new active abilities, “Advanced Sensors” and “Astrometrics Scan”. The first active ability, “Advanced Sensors,” allows the USS Voyager to reveal ships that evade regular sensors, such as the new Species 8472 hostiles. The second active ability, “Astrometrics Scan” can be used on another player’s ship to reveal the coordinates of their station. This ability can come in handy when you’re on the hunt for more resources or to get revenge against a hostile Commander that raided you. To use the USS Voyager to its full potential, you will want to travel to the new systems that have been revealed with the release of Update 55. There, you can combat the “Hirogen Hunter Elites” in order to collect the Hirogen Relics. These relics can then be exchanged for Deuterium Canisters, which fuel both of the Voyager’s active abilities. Once you have your Deuterium Canisters, you can use the Voyager’s “Advanced Sensors” ability to reveal Species 8472. These hostiles start at the “Velixys” system and reward Exotic Biotoxins, which can then be refined into rewards and a travel token for specific Delta Quadrant systems. These unique systems will have “Anomaly Samples”, which can be exchanged for “Voyager ship parts”, “circuitry fragments”, and the new, extremely powerful, Isolytic Artifacts.

The USS Voyager also comes with its own research tree providing 21 new nodes, accenting both your in-loop and out of loop gameplay. These nodes include damage against hostiles, impulse and warp speed, and increased payouts from artifact exchange chests. Additionally, many of these nodes affect your entire fleet.

However, clandestine forces conspire in the shadows. Arcaelans, descendants of the Progenitor lineage, seek to claim the mantle of galactic caretakers; an esteemed role once held by their predecessors. In order to see their plan through, the Arcaelans have enlisted the aid of both the Borg and the Hirogen. Instructing them to target Species 8472, the Arcaelans seek to destroy fluidic space and correct what they deem to be an interstellar anomaly. Nevertheless, unlikely to accept her role as a pawn in another’s plans, the Borg Queen formulates intentions of her own… Explore the Delta Quadrant Space further in 10 new planetary missions: Meanwhile, closer to home, incursions into the Delta Quadrant have acquired the attention and interest of several native species. The resourceful Vaadwaur, the formidable Devore, and even the scholarly conglomerate known as the Think Tank have all expressed interest in working with Independent operators hailing from the Alpha Quadrant. But of course, how they hope to benefit from these alliances remains to be determined. As the journey through the Delta Quadrant continues, all aspiring explorers are advised to exercise caution. For as many new allies await to make first contact, there are just as many potential new foes waiting to strike… Learn about Isolytic Damage in 2 new missions. Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 - Everything We Know

Star trek: discovery’s burnham and saru friendship is great, but i miss their old dynamic, star trek: discovery never showed the 32nd century’s uss enterprise.

  • Star Trek: Discovery's ever-changing Captains made for a wild ride through 5 seasons - even a mystery Captain!
  • The USS Discovery's advanced tech and heroic missions saved the galaxy, but its Captains faced challenges and betrayals.
  • From Mirror Universe frauds to stalwart Kelpien leaders, the Captains of the Discovery each left their mark on Star Trek lore.

The eponymous starship of Star Trek: Discovery has remarkably had several Captains going into its fifth and final season, and there's even one Captain who Trekkers never got to meet or even learn the identity of. Star Trek: Discovery was infamous for the game of musical chairs the series has played with the USS Discovery's Captaincy . This reached absurd heights in Star Trek: Discovery season 1 as the various bizarre circumstances of the Disco's Captain's chair saw 4 people in the role of the USS Discovery's Captain.

The USS Discovery (NCC-1031) is a 23rd-century Crossfield Class starship originally designed as a state-of-the-art science and research vessel. Discovery was equipped with Starfleet's most advanced technology, including the revolutionary spore displacement hub drive . The Disco has saved the galaxy multiple times in the 23rd and 32nd centuries. Through it all, several people sat in Discovery's Captain's chair. Here is everyone who has commanded (or was supposed to command) the bridge as Captain of the Discovery in Star Trek: Discovery 's five seasons.

Star Trek: Discovery season 5 is the final season of Paramount+'s flagship series, and here's everything we know about Captain Burnham's last voyages.

11 Captain Gabriel Lorca (Mirror)

Discovery's first captain was a fraud from the mirror universe.

Captain Gabriel Lorca (Jason Issacs) was the first Captain of the Discovery, and he was a fraud. Lorca was actually from the Mirror Universe , and he replaced his Prime Universe counterpart, the former Captain of the lost USS Buran. As Captain of the Discovery, Lorca wanted to weaponize its spore drive with the stated goal of Starfleet winning the Klingon War . But Lorca's vaulting ambition was to find a way back to the Mirror Universe to complete his master plan of overthrowing Emperor Philippa Georgiou (Michelle Yeoh). Lorca was also obsessed with Michael Burnham, who was his lover in the Mirror Universe. Locra's attempt to overthrow Georgiou failed, resulting in his death.

The Mirror Lorca was, in his way, an effective Captain of the Discovery.

Lorca endures as perhaps Star Trek: Discovery' s best villain . The Mirror Lorca was, in his way, an effective Captain of the Discovery. Lorca was certainly adept at hiding his secrets and he was a stern taskmaster who ruffled the feathers of the scientists aboard Discovery, like Lt. Paul Stamets (Anthony Rapp). However, to his credit, Lorca was also an experienced battle commander who led the USS Discovery to major victories over the Klingons. Still, the Mirror Lorca was revealed to be a manipulative liar and his legacy is a stain on the history of the USS Discovery that the crew has moved on from.

10 Captain Sylvia Tilly

Aka captain killy.

When the USS Discovery traveled to the Mirror Universe in Star Trek: Discovery season 1, Ensign Sylvia Tilly (Mary Wiseman) had to don golden armor and pose as her Mirror Universe counterpart, Captain Sylvia Tilly of the ISS Discovery. Mirror Tilly earned the nickname "Captain Killy" for her homicidal tendencies , and playing this role was an education for the pure-hearted Tilly from Star Trek 's Prime Universe. However, Sylvia's brief time in the USS Discovery's center seat as "Captain Killy" did help her confidence to become First Officer of Discovery in Star Trek: Discovery season 2.

In Star Trek: Discovery season 4, Lieutenant Sylvia Tilly left the USS Discovery to become an instructor at the newly reopened Starfleet Academy.

9 Admiral Katrina Cornwell

A rare good starfleet admiral.

Vice Admiral Katrina Cornwell (Jayne Brook) was the Starfleet flag officer who oversaw the USS Discovery's missions. Cornwell was also an intimate the Prime Universe's Gabriel Lorca; yet, despite her prior training as a therapist, Katrina was fooled by the Mirror Lorca and never suspected he was from another reality. Admiral Cornwell temporarily took command of the Disco from Acting Captain Saru after the starship returned from the Mirror Universe in Star Trek: Discovery season 1.

Admiral Cornwell perished as she heroically saved the USS Enterprise from a missile sent by Control during the final battle of Star Trek: Discovery season 2.

Admiral Cornwell brought the USS Discovery to Starbase 1, only to learn it was conquered by the Klingons, who massacred its personnel. The Admiral's time in Discovery' s Captain's chair was short as Cornwell stepped aside for the starship's next, and even more unlikely, temporary Captain, who was even more dangerous than Gabriel Lorca . Admiral Cornwell later perished as she heroically saved the USS Enterprise from a missile sent by Control during the final battle of Star Trek: Discovery season 2.

8 Emperor Philippa Georgiou (Mirror)

"captain georgiou" almost committed genocide.

Perhaps the most absurd Captain of the Discovery was the Mirror Universe's Emperor Philippa Georgiou, who pretended to be her dead Prime Universe counterpart, Captain Georgiou . The Emperor proposed that Starfleet end the Klingon war by attacking Qo'noS, the Klingon homeworld , and detonating a hydrogen bomb inside the planet's mantle to render it uninhabitable. Desperate to put an end to the costly war, Starfleet Command shockingly backed this plot and Admiral Cornwell even agreed to allow the Emperor to pose as Captain Georgiou, who was "back from a classified assignment," and assume command of the Discovery.

Emperor Georgiou's time pretending to be Captain Georgiou was mercifully brief, and she escaped to Qo'noS after Michael Burnham stopped her plan. Instead, Burnham gave the hydrogen bomb detonator to L'Rell (Mary Chieffo), who used it to unite the Great Houses, end the war, and install herself as Klingon High Chancellor at the end of Star Trek: Discovery season 1 . Georgiou would resurface as part of Section 31 before joining Commander Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and the USS Discovery's trip to the 32nd century. Georgiou was ultimately sent to an unknown time and place by the Guardian of Forever (Paul Guilfoyle) to save her life in Star Trek: Discovery season 3.

Academy Award-winner Michelle Yeoh will return as Emperor Georgiou in the first made-for-Paramount+ Star Trek movie, Star Trek: Section 31.

7 Discovery's Unknown Captain

A mystery star trek: discovery will probably never solve.

After the United Federation of Planets' triumph in the Klingon War and the reinstatement of Michael Burnham to her rank of Commander, the USS Discovery set a course to Vulcan in order to pick up its new Captain. However, Discovery was intercepted by the USS Enterprise at the end of Star Trek: Discovery season 1. Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) came aboard to temporarily take over command of the Discovery. As such, the Discovery never did make it to Vulcan and Trekkers never learned who the mystery Captain was supposed to be . Regardless, whoever it was never got to command the Discovery, which vanished into the 32nd century. Discovery's existence was redacted from Starfleet records by Lieutenant Spock (Ethan Peck) to protect his adopted sister, Michael Burnham.

6 Captain Christopher Pike

"be bold. be brave. be courageous.".

The Captain of the USS Enterprise , Christopher Pike was transferred to the USS Discovery at the start of Star Trek: Discovery season 2. Captain Pike's mission was to investigate and solve the mystery of the red burst signals that appeared across space. Pike's orders intersected with the disappearance of the Enterprise's Science Officer, Lt. Spock, who later joined his Captain and Michael Burnham aboard the Discovery. In addition, Pike learned of his ultimate fate that he would be critically injured by delta rays in a tragic accident in the future — but the Captain courageously chose to continue his Starfleet career and meet his destiny.

Christopher Pike was a welcome throwback to the mold of the classic Star Trek Captain , and Anson Mount's version updated the Starship Enterprise's original master, played by Jeffrey Hunter, who starred in the rejected first Star Trek pilot and was replaced with William Shatner's Captain James T. Kirk when NBC ordered Star Trek to go to series in 1966. Indeed, Mount's Captain Pike was so popular with Trekkers that he, Spock, and Number One (Rebecca Romijn) received their own spinoff aboard the Enterprise, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.

5 Captain Saru

The first kelpien in starfleet became captain of the discovery.

After stepping up and filling the big chair as Acting Captain multiple times during the chaos of Star Trek: Discovery seasons 1 and 2, Commander Saru (Doug Jones) finally became the official Captain of the Discovery in season 3, episode 3, "People of Earth." Saru had a long road to his well-deserved recognition as the USS Discovery's Captain. The first Kelpien in Starfleet, Saru was mentored by the late Captain Georgiou, and he was Science Officer aboard the ill-fated USS Shenzhou before he transferred to the USS Discovery and became Captain Lorca's First Officer.

Saru provided calm, steady leadership throughout the USS Discovery's constant leadership turmoil.

Saru's distinguished tenure as the USS Discovery's Number One led to his repeatedly assuming the role of Acting Captain, and Saru provided calm, steady leadership throughout Discovery's constant leadership turmoil. The Kelpien also underwent his people's Vahar'ai ritual, which evolved him and stripped him of his fears, and this only made Saru a more effective leader. There is no doubt Captain Saru has earned the respect and loyalty of Discovery's crew . However, Saru voluntarily left the Disco at the end of Star Trek: Discover y season 3, paving the way for a new Captain whom he recommended as his replacement. Mr. Saru returned as the USS Discovery's First Officer in Star Trek: Discovery season 4.

Saru became a Federation Ambassador in Star Trek: Discovery season 5, and was promoted to Admiral upon his marriage to President T'Rina (Tara Rosling) of Ni'Var.

4 Captain Michael Burnham

"captain burnham, that hope is you.".

Commander Michael Burnham finally became Captain of the Discovery at the end of Star Trek: Discovery season 3. Burnham yielded the Captaincy to Saru early in Discovery season 3 when she had doubts about wanting to remain in Starfleet after spending a year traveling the galaxy with Cleveland Booker (David Ajala). Ultimately, Burnham's heroics led her to her destiny and the Disco's Captain's chair. Michael saved the Federation from Osyraa (Janet Kidder), the leader of the Emerald Chain, who hijacked the USS Discovery. Coupled with Saru's choice to return to Kaminar at the end of Star Trek: Discovery season 3, Burnham finally got the promotion she waited almost a thousand years for.

Captain Michael Burnham is the undisputed most important starship Captain of the 32nd century.

The story of Star Trek: Discovery 's first 3 seasons was the story of Michael Burnham's redemption and journey to the Captain's chair. In Star Trek: Discovery season 4, Captain Burnham faced her gravest test to save the galaxy from the Dark Matter Anomaly while facing political pressure from new Federation President Laira Rillak (Chelah Horsdal) and the end of her romance with Book. Burnham led Discovery into another galaxy to make First Contact with Species 10-C, the creators of the Dark Matter Anomaly. Captain Michael Burnham is the undisputed most important starship Captain of the 32nd century, and her final mission is to seek "the greatest treasure in the known galaxy" in Star Trek: Discovery season 5.

Michael Burnham was promoted to Admiral as seen in Star Trek: Discovery' s series finale coda, which is set 30+ years in the future.

3 Lt. Commander Airiam

Discovery's tragic cyborg.

Lt. Commander Airiam (Hannah Cheesman) returned in Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 4 , "Face the Strange". The cyborg tragically died in Star Trek: Discovery season 2, but a time bug planted on the USS Discovery by Moll (Eve Harlow) sent Captain Michael Burnham back to the 23rd century of Star Trek: Discovery season 1. Airiam was in command of the USS Discovery in the absence of Captain Gabriel Lorca. While Discovery's bridge crew was hostile toward Captain Burnham, it was Airiam who believed Michael that she time-traveled from the future. Airiam also learned her tragic fate but agreed with Burnham that she would go through with her sacrifice anyway to save Discovery.

2 Lt. Commander Gen Rhys

He's a constitution class man.

Lt. Commander Gen Rhys (Patrick Kwok-Choon) capably commanded the USS Discovery in Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 8, "Labyrinths" . With both Captain Burnham and Commander Rayner at the Eternal Gallery and Archive, Rhys took over the center seat and led the USS Discovery into the dangerous badlands before engaging the attacking Breen. Rhys, who serves as the USS Discovery's tactical officer, kept the crew and starship safe, buying Burnham the crucial time she needed to pass Dr. Marina Derex's test and acquire the final clue to the Progenitors' treasure. Rhys impressively showed his potential as Captain of a starship.

1 Commander Rayner

“i love the feeling of interrupting something.”.

Perhaps Star Trek: Discovery' s most successful and popular new character , Commander Rayner (Callum Keith Rennie) was Acting Captain of the USS Discovery in the final two episodes of Star Trek: Discovery season 5. Rayner was introduced in Star Trek: Discovery season 5's premiere as Captain Rayner of the USS Antares. The Kellerun was nearly drummed out of Starfleet but Captain Michael Burnham requested Rayner as the new First Officer of the USS Discovery. It wasn't an easy fit, at first, and the gruff Rayner struggled to connect with Burnham's crew.

Commander Rayner refused to sit on the USS Discovery's Captain's chair at first, but when he did, he led Discovery to victory.

However, Commander Rayner proved exactly why he is such an effective starship captain in Star Trek: Discovery season 5, episode 9, "Lagrange Point" and Star Trek: Discovery 's series finale , "Life, Itself". Acting Captain Rayner commanded the USS Discovery a gainst the Breen while Captain Burnham was trapped in the Progenitors' dimension, and it was Rayner's tactical prowess that saved the day. Under Rayner's leadership, the USS Discovery executed a saucer separation and spore jumped the more powerful Breen to the Galactic Barrier. Rayner's Star Trek future is an open question after Star Trek: Discovery , but the Kellerun's redemption as Acting Captain of Discovery was a highlight of Star Trek: Discovery season 5.

Following some complaints about the length of the Armada version, the single-player campaign was altered for this game; now only three races are involved, and each storyline is mostly independent of the others: the Federation must repel a Borg invasion via a new type of transwarp gate, taking the assault into the Delta Quadrant ; the Klingons must deal with a resurgent Cardassian military, while the Borg, affected by events in the Federation campaign, must stave off an attack by Species 8472, before combining with the Federation to eliminate this galactic threat.

  • All playable races except Species 8472 use them to build installations. The Borg call their ship an "Assembler". When the game starts, the player gets one starbase and/ or one, maybe two construction ships. In the main scenarios, such as the Federation Scenario, the player has one, maybe two of these ships which is used to construct the base(s) needed to complete the scenario(s).

Other ships/races [ ]

Ferengi starships (non-playable) [ ].

  • D'Kora -class – ( though can be assimilated for use in the Borg campaign )
  • Ferengi merchant vessel

Setting [ ]

Star Trek: Armada II takes place from stardate 54522 to some time after stardate 54881, some six months after the events of the first game. The Borg have been spotted in Federation space using a new vessel employed to assimilate planetary surfaces. The Cardassian Union is becoming increasingly aggressive, and the Klingons are growing tired of their role as peace-keepers.

Single player campaign [ ]

Federation campaign [ ], "invasion" [ ].

Stardate 54522.2: A Borg force has invaded the Regula Badlands. The Enterprise is dispatched to eliminate the Borg presence, reclaim the colony world, and determine how the Collective was able to make it so deep into the Alpha Quadrant . It is discovered that a new type of tachyon nebula may hold the answer to this question.

"Lifelines" [ ]

Stardate 54544.2: The Federation starbase at Alpha Theta VI is under attack, and badly needs supplies. Convoys of cargo ships need to be escorted through a treacherous nebula, and a Borg defense network, in order to resupply the base.

"Recovery" [ ]

Stardate 54566.1: Starbase 176 has been attacked by the Borg, and the area is devastated. The Enterprise must defend the base against further attacks, and rebuild its defenses to act as a staging area. The assimilated USS Douglass is recaptured from the Borg.

"Along the Neutral Zone" [ ]

Stardate 54588.0: A small fleet, led by a single Akira -class starship under the command of a Captain McDermott, is dispatched to the Romulan Neutral Zone to establish a presence in a hazardous nebula field. The Enterprise suffers severe damage en route to the area, and must be protected from an assault by a squadron of Borg cubes.

"Into The Breach" [ ]

Stardate 54612.7: The transwarp portal is known to be located within the Regula Badlands. The Enterprise and her fleet must find, capture and hold the portal to allow an assault on Borg territory.

"Inferno" [ ]

Stardate 54637.3: The Federation invasion force enters the Delta Quadrant through the captured transwarp portal. Its counterpart must be captured, and all Borg within the area eliminated. The mission is hampered by the presence of a powerful subspace field that prevents warp travel.

"The Cavalry" [ ]

Stardate 54664.7: The Federation Third Fleet is ambushed in system J-356 by vessels of unknown origin. The Enterprise responds to a distress call from the USS Allegheny , the vessel leading the fleet, and the only survivor of the attack. The presence of Species 8472 is strongly suspected, as the Federation forces scour the system of a heavy Borg presence.

"Data Retrieval" [ ]

Stardate 54694.9: A modified freighter is used to retrieve vital data on the location of the Borg staging grounds from a Borg Nexus base. A heavy assault fleet must protect the data miner until its mission is complete.

"Staging Grounds" [ ]

Stardate 54727.7: The Borg staging grounds have been located in system J-361, and a huge Borg fleet is detected. The Federation forces must assemble an assault force without alerting the Borg to their presence. Once the attack is completed, the Enterprise and the surviving vessels must retreat to an extraction point, prior to returning to the transwarp portal.

"There And Back Again" [ ]

Stardate 54760.6: The Federation forces are in full retreat. A massive Borg counterattack, coupled with the arrival of dozens of Species 8472 vessels, has forced Starfleet to pull back to the transwarp portal, and back to the Alpha Quadrant. The evacuation is almost complete, when the portal suddenly explodes, leaving the Enterprise and several dozen vessels trapped behind enemy lines...

Klingon Campaign [ ]

"uprising: a dagger at zarush" [ ].

Stardate 54642.8: A massive Cardassian force, led by Gul Kentar, has attacked and destroyed the Federation reserve fleet at its dock in the Pearl Nebula. The Klingon defense forces must hold the line at Zarush, and strike back at the invading Cardassian fleet over Vanoshan.

"Executioner" [ ]

Stardate 54656.5: With the Pearl Nebula secure for the moment, Chancellor Martok orders a retaliatory strike against the Cardassian-held world of Kestian, and other Cardassian bases in the Doltec system. The planet must be eliminated.

"Brave New Worlds" [ ]

Stardate 54670.2: The Efate system is a key location for colonization and resupply. The system must be secure before the Cardassians get there and claim the worlds themselves, denying them a crucial resource.

"Blockade" [ ]

Stardate 54683.9: The Cardassians are on the back foot, with supply lines crumbling. A chance to break the front line has emerged at Mornaur II – however, a Romulan supply convoy is en route to the system. It appears that the Romulans have been behind the Cardassians sudden rearmament. The convoy must be intercepted before it reaches the planet, and before an assault on the system can take place.

"The Unknown Prize" [ ]

Stardate 54697.6: The Kulinor class of Cardassian vessel has been seen with additional, unidentified modifications. A prototype vessel, the "Quantum Singularity Ship" has been detected on the far side of the Ketch'Tor asteroid belt, and must be captured to determine its secrets.

"The Romulan Connection" [ ]

Stardate 54711.3: Romulan duplicity in the Kentar Uprising is now clear. The Star Empire must be "persuaded" to cease its support for the Cardassians. In order for this to proceed, a series of Romulan colonies must been conquered and Romulan bases destroyed.

"Battle of Crucis Major" [ ]

Stardate 54725.0: Despite cutting off most of their supplies, Gul Kentar's forces are able to launch a massive assault on the Klingon base at Crucis Major. With defenses incomplete, Martok is barely able to escape. However, the presence of a secret base operated by the House of Tagesh may allow the Klingons to fight back and clear the system of the Cardassian invaders.

"Trojan Horse" [ ]

Stardate 54738.7: To attack a Cardassian base, a Cardassian vessel must be captured and employed to disable vital defense systems. Without it, the Klingon forces will be unable to press on and take out the base.

"To Cardassia And Victory" [ ]

Stardate 54752.4: The Klingon counterattack has reached the Cardassian system itself. The surrounding planets must be captured, before a final assault on Cardassia Prime and its powerful defenses can be mounted. Gul Kentar is able to escape as Cardassia Prime falls, but Martok and his fleet are close behind.

"The Final Battle" [ ]

Stardate 54766.1: Kentar has fled to his secret base in the Hurik system. Here, he must be destroyed, along with the quantum singularity technology the Cardassians have developed, which is how they are bringing Species 8472 into the galaxy. The station is destroyed and Kentar's ship is destroyed in combat with Martok's armada.

Borg Campaign [ ]

"werewolf pack" [ ].

Stardate 54771.6: With the destruction of the transwarp portal in "There and Back Again", a number of Borg ships, including that of the Borg Queen, have been trapped in the Alpha Quadrant, as Picard and some of the Starfleet vessels have likewise in the Delta Quadrant. The Collective must assimilate cargo vessels in order to gain resources to rebuild their forces. However, Species 8472, having been drawn into the quadrant by the Cardassians' experiments in quantum singularities, are also in the sector, and the Borg are forced to retreat.

"Pink Slips" [ ]

Stardate 54785.3: Species 8472 vessels are attacking a Federation outpost , with the Borg caught in the middle. Both sides must be eliminated if reconstruction is to proceed. Since 8472 cannot be assimilated, Federation vessels must be captured and used against them.

"Interdiction" [ ]

Stardate 54799.0: The Borg now have sufficient resources to begin consolidating their position with a Nexus base. Cargo and other vessels must still be seized until resource gathering can be initiated.

"There Goes the Neighborhood" [ ]

Stardate 54812.7: All planetary bodies in Grid 967, a Romulan-held sector, must be assimilated in order to maintain reconstruction efforts.

"The Catch" [ ]

Stardate 54826.4: A pair of Federation starships have been captured, with key information on recreating the transwarp portal. With Species 8472 in pursuit, the two vessels must be relocated to the nearest Borg Nexus immediately for disassembly and analysis. Progress is hampered by intense nebular activity.

"Interception" [ ]

Stardate 54840.1: The Klingons have captured a Species 8472 bio-ship . In order to determine how the aliens are getting into the Alpha Quadrant, the facility analyzing the ship must be assimilated, and the Klingon forces suppressed.

"Strange Bedfellows" [ ]

Stardate 54853.8: Technology 2702 – the transwarp portal – has been reacquired. In order to successfully drive Species 8472 back into fluidic space , the Borg must retrieve the Federation forces stranded in the Delta Quadrant, and negotiate an alliance. The transwarp portal must be reconstructed, and used to accomplish this objective.

"Tidal Wave" [ ]

Stardate 54867.5: The Federation and the Collective have come to an agreement – Species 8472 must be eliminated, and the only way to accomplish this task is to combine forces. A massive fluidic rift has been detected, which is allowing the bio-ships access to our galaxy. Nearby sectors must be cleared before an assault can take place.

"The Maw" [ ]

Stardate 54881.2: The fluidic rift has been located. In order to successfully traverse the barrier into fluidic space, the Federation forces need to collect sufficient resources, and scout the rift for any dangers. Meanwhile, Species 8472 bio-ships continue to flood into the quadrant, and must be eliminated.

"Rifts" [ ]

Stardate unknown: The combined Federation and Borg fleet has entered fluidic space. Three additional rifts are being generated by an unknown entity, and must be located. The rift maker must be destroyed to prevent further incursions.

With the threat from Species 8472 eliminated, the alliance is dissolved – the Borg vessels are escorted back to the transwarp portal, and sent back to the Delta Quadrant, and Picard warns that further incursions into the Alpha Quadrant will be met with the strongest force.

(A cameo is made on this level by the USS Incursion from Star Trek: Away Team . It is a fully playable ship, and features the holo-disguise ability from Away Team .)

Multiplayer mode [ ]

As with Armada , multiplayer mode (and Instant Action) sees the player competing against up to seven opponents – the last one standing wins. Armada II adds some additional gameplay modes to the on-line game, including "Capture the Flag" and "Assault". The Internet game used Gamespy servers to run online games.

Game tips [ ]

To allow complete access to and use of an enemy race's technology, capture either a starbase or a construction ship. By working up the technology tree, a player can even have access to enemy weapon technology. For example, if a Federation player captured a Borg construction ship or a nexus, that player could eventually build and use tactical fusion cubes and even a transwarp gate . Note that this is only available in Instant Action and Multiplayer mode; it cannot be done in single player mode.

To use the extra dilithium crystals (see cheat codes, below), construct a trading station to exchange them for metal or latinum . If playing as the Borg, who do not use latinum, construct a recycler to change the dilithium for metal. Species 8472 have no resource exchange capabilities.

Cheat codes [ ]

Star Trek: Armada II contains many of the same cheat codes as the original. To access the cheat codes, which are only available in single player mode, press the "Enter" key and type one of the following codes, followed by the "Enter" key again:

  • showmethemoney adds 2,000 dilithium crystals to the player's stores. These extra crystals can be sold or used like regular dilithium. This can come in handy in fluidic space (which lacks resources). This code is repeatable, to obtain more crystals, press enter, then type this code, press enter each time you need more crystals.
  • kobayashimaru will allow the player to automatically win the current mission and advance to the next mission.
  • youstopmecold will increase the speed at which ships are built.
  • avoidance will increase the rate at which new crew are recruited.

Romulan-Federation War [ ]

If Starfleet intrudes upon the Romulan Neutral Zone in the 4th Federation campaign mission more then once, it will trigger hostilities between the Federation and the Romulan Empire. Hordes of Romulans invade Federation space and begin attacks on Starfleet. The Enterprise -E becomes a priority target for the Romulans upon arrival. Even if Starfleet is able to destroy or capture the Romulan base, additional Romulan reinforcements continue arriving from outside the sector, therefore the Romulans will keep up their attacks until all mission objectives are achieved. Despite having a common foe, the Romulans and the Borg still attack one another; one could potentially cripple the other beyond recovery thereby making it easier to achieve primary mission objective. This Romulan-Federation War has no impact on later missions whatsoever.

Since the Romulan invasion virtually rivals Gul Kentar's surprise attack at the start of the Battle of Crucis Major, the best strategy is establishing a new base where the Enterprise -E arrives with a defensive line consisting of Starbases, Torpedo Turrets, Pulse Cannons, and Sensor Arrays used to ambush any enemy ships approaching through the nebula. Provided the Romulans destroy most of the Borg base, a few captured Warbirds should make short work of any Borg stragglers while using cloaking to evade Romulan patrols.

'Star Trek: Prodigy' Season 2 Will Be Released Like No Other Trek Series

The Big Picture

  • Star Trek: Prodigy's second season hits Netflix on July 1, giving fans a binge-worthy experience with all twenty episodes at once.
  • This marks a departure from the usual weekly release strategy, making Prodigy stand out in the galaxy of Star Trek series.
  • The show follows a young alien crew escaping tyranny aboard a Federation starship, guided by holographic Captain Janeway.

Star Trek: Prodigy 's second season is coming to Netflix on July 1 - but don't expect a weekly release like Paramount+'s galaxy of Star Trek series. In accordance with Netflix' typical release strategy, all twenty episodes of the season will be released on the same day. TrekCore.com has a confirmation of the show's release schedule.

It will be a new experience for Star Trek fans, as all previous Trek series to debut in the streaming era, starting with Star Trek: Discovery in 2017, have released one episode a week for the duration of their seasons - typically premiering a season with two episodes at once. Netflix and Amazon Prime Video remain the only two major streamers to stick with the binge-watching model , as streamers Max, Apple TV+, Paramount+, and Disney+ have largely used a weekly release schedule for their series. There have been exceptions, however; the Marvel Spotlight series Echo had all five of its episodes released on Netflix on January 9, 2024.

What is 'Star Trek: Prodigy' About?

Star Trek: Prodigy follows a team of young aliens - Dal ( Brett Gray ), Gwyn ( Ella Purnell ), Jankom Pog ( Jason Mantzoukas ), Zero ( Angus Imrie ), Rok-Tahk ( Rylee Alazraqui ), and Murf ( Dee Bradley Baker ) - who escape from the tyrannical Diviner ( John Noble ) aboard a lost Federation starship, the experimental USS Protostar . Guided and mentored by a holographic avatar of legendary Starfleet captain Kathryn Janeway ( Kate Mulgrew ), the ragtag group races towards Federation space over the course of the first season. In the first-season finale, the Protostar, and the holographic Janeway, were destroyed, but the crew found themselves taken under the wing of the real Janeway. The second season will see the team take off on another adventure - minus Gwyn, who departed to help her people, the Vau N'Akat, seek peace.

Star Trek: Prodigy almost never made it to Netflix at all. The series premiered on Paramount+ in 2021, and was well-received by Star Trek fans young and old, but it was unexpectedly canceled and taken off the streamer in 2023 - even though the show had already been renewed for a second season, which had nearly been completed. After fan outcry , the second season was completed and licensed to Netflix.

Watch on Netflix

All twenty episodes of Star Trek: Prodigy 's second season will be released on Netflix on July 1, 2024 . Stay tuned to Collider for future updates.
