The Mujib Biosphere Reserve is the lowest nature reserve in the world, with a spectacular array of scenery near the east coast of the Dead Sea. The Reserve is located within the deep Wadi Mujib gorge, which enters the Dead Sea at 410m below sea level. The Reserve extends to the Karak and Madaba mountains to the north and south, reaching 900 metres above sea level in some places. This 1,300m variation in elevation, combined with the valley's year- round water flow from seven tributaries, means that Wadi Mujib enjoys a magnificent bio-diversity that is still being explored and documented today. Over 300 species of plants, 10 species of carnivores and numerous species of permanent and migratory birds have been recorded. Some of the remote mountain and valley areas are difficult to reach, and thus offer safe havens for rare species of cats, goats and other mountain animals. Mujib's sandstone cliffs are an ideal habitat for one of the most beautiful mountain goats in the world, the horned Ibex.

The trail starts at Mujib Adventure Center where you will take the cantilevered walkway and follow the course of the river between the towering sandstone cliffs to the base of a large waterfall. Depending on seasonal rainfall levels, the gorge may contain pools deep enough for swimming. This is an idea walk to take slowly and enjoy the cool water and shade, especially in the heat of summer. Canyon Trail

The trail begins from Mujib Adventure Center and follows the Dead Sea Highway to the South (starting point). Shortly after entering the gorge, you will reach the top of a spectacular waterfall 20m, high, which will be negotiated under the watchful eye of a trained guide. After descending the waterfall, the hike continues along the Siq Trail returning to Mujib Adventures Center. This activity is only available during the summer; depending on weather conditions. Please contact the service provider to see if the activity is available. A trained guide is required. 

Malaqi Trail

The trail begins from Mujib Adventure Center and follows the Dead Sea Highway to the South (starting point). The hike continues upstream to the confluence with Hidan River where you will swim in natural pools before moving on to descend a 20m high waterfall under the supervision of a trained guide. After descending the waterfall, the hike continues along the Siq Trail returning to Mujib Adventures Center. This activity is only available during the summer; depending on weather conditions. Please contact the service provider to see if the activity is available. A trained guide is required.

The trail begins at the Mujib Adventure Center and follows the Dead Sea Highway before ascending into the reserve. Diverging to the South, the trail runs parallel to the Dead Sea, which provides a startlingly blue backdrop for the entire hike. The hike then continues along a number of dry wadis to the Raddas Ranger Station, where you may see the Nubian Ibex. It is also where the famous rock “statue” of Lot’s wife can be seen. After resting at the station, the trail continues along a road for about an hour. This activity is only available during the winter; depending on weather conditions. Al-Hidan Trail

The trail starts from the visitor center and moves from the Southwest to the northeast, you will swim from pool to another until you make to the end point where you will find the ancient wheat mill. 

The Mujib Biosphere Reserve has installed a zipline made up of two parallel cables, allowing two people to zipline together. The zipline is 100m long, with a slope of about 9m, extending with the Mujib Bridge. From its starting point at the Visitor Center on the other side of the valley.

Visiting Wadi Mujib – a canyoning adventure in Jordan

The Wadi Mujib Biosphere Reserve in Jordan, with its cascades, pools and waterfalls, offers an adventurous and refreshing break from the desert landscape. We followed the popular self-guided Siq trail through the Mujib river gorge. It’s open from April to October and easily combined with a stay at the Dead Sea. This exciting canyoning experience was a highlight of our visit to Jordan and we share everything you need to know for a safe and enjoyable visit.

Wadi Mujib Biosphere Reserve

The Mujib Biosphere Reserve in Jordan was established in 1985, extending from the Dead Sea at 416 metres below sea level, to the Karak and Madaba mountains at 900 metres above sea level. Covering an area of 212 square kilometres, the variety of elevation, combined with the year round supply of water, creates an area rich in biodiversity. Sandstone cliffs are home to the rare horned Ibex, as well as providing a protected haven for many other mountain animals and birds.

The clear waters of the Mujib and Hidan rivers flow through gorges, with waterfalls and cascades feeding pools that offer exciting and adventurous activities. Most visitors come for the Wadi Mujib canyoning experience, the majority undertaking the self-guided Siq Trail from the Wadi Mujib Adventure Centre. The reserve and the activities within it, are managed by the Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature, under its trademark organisation Wild Jordan .

Hiking trails in Wadi Mujib Biosphere Reserve

There are set hiking trails within the Wadi Mujib Biosphere reserve, the most popular of which is the self-guided Siq Trail . Other trails are more adventurous extensions of the Siq Trail, that must be undertaken with a guide. These start at the Wadi Mujib Adventure Centre , but it’s worth knowing that there’s a second Hidan Adventure Centre, that runs even more adventurous canyoning experiences.

Siq Trail at Wadi Mujib

The Siq Trail at Wadi Mujib is the most popular ‘wet’ trail, since it’s the only one you can make as a self-guided hike. You’ll walk through a canyon, wading through the fast flowing river over pebbles. Within the gorge there are three main cascades, which you’ll need to climb with the help of ropes and a metal ladder.

After the third cascade, a further wade along the river brings you to a waterfall cascading into a natural pool where you can swim. You then return by the same route, and at some cascades will need to slide over them under the guidance of the guides.

Our experience on the Siq Trail at Wadi Mujib

We visited Wadi Mujib in August, as a stop off on our drive from Petra to the Dead Sea, where we were to spend a couple of nights. It was around lunchtime when we arrived and luckily the car park was not too full to find a space.

We bought a ticket, then changed in the visitor centre toilets, locking all our belongings in our hire car. Although the lockers were not operational, we were able to leave our money, passports and car keys in a bundle behind the ticket desk.

Having chosen our lifejacket and hired a drybag for my phone, the first hurdle was to climb down the metal ladder to the riverbed. We waded up the river, which in high summer seemed relatively low, compared to reports we had heard of it being waist or chest deep at other times of year.

Up until the first cascade, we were probably knee deep in water with dry sections of river bed on either side. Although the temperatures were high (around 36 degrees celsius), the soaring walls of the canyon and the constant flow of water kept us refreshingly cool.

The cascades at Wadi Mujib

After 20-30 minutes, we arrived at the first and easiest of the cascades. To one side was a rope and obvious footholds to pull yourself up. It was a bit tricky knowing where to put our feet, but we made it and a helpful local (read more about this later) gave us a hand and took a photo of us at the top of the cascade.

A further wade up the river brought us to the second cascade, which was a little more challenging. The ascent was on a metal ladder, with a rushing torrent of water coming over it. With the flow of water being pretty strong, we had to hold our breath and ascend by feeling our way for part of it, since the water flow completely covered us.

A guide was sitting at the top of this second cascade, controlling the flow of people. Although a bit of a queue had developed, we didn’t have to wait too long. To descend this waterfall, most people walked back down the ladder, jumping off at the end. There was also a route to slide down, although we didn’t see many people using this as perhaps the water was not high enough.

Having navigated the second cascade successfully, we continued to the third and final cascade. Here we didn’t see any guides in attendance, but our ‘helpful local’ encouraged us on, offering to help. We decided to hold back and watch as a couple of fitter travellers climbed the metal ladder, with a scramble over a boulder at the top.

Beyond this, we knew was a large pool and the final 20 metre high waterfall. However, having watched others trying this third cascade, we decided we’d reached the limit of our comfort zone and decided to make our way back.

On the return, it was very refreshing to descend the cascades and drift along with the current, even though the water was a bit shallow to take us the whole way without wading. We felt elated that we’d completed at least the first two cascades, and in the heat of August enjoyed the cool of the river water.

More trails at Wadi Mujib

Canyon trail.

This guided trail is for the more adventurous, although it was closed when we visited. Starting at the Wadi Mujib Adventure Centre, you follow the Dead Sea Highway South and then climb uphill on a rocky trail to reach the Mujib river. Following the river will bring you to the top of the waterfall at the end of the Siq trail. You’ll descend the 20 metre high waterfall with the help of the guide and then return along the Siq trail in reverse, ending back at the Visitor Centre.

• Time to hike: 4 hours
• Group size: 6-25 people
• Difficulty: moderate to difficult

Malaqi Trail

This trail was closed when we visited and is a longer version of the Canyon trail. Once you reach the Mujib river you hike along it upstream to reach the confluence with the Hidan river. Here are some natural pools where you can swim. Returning along the Mujib river, you descend the 20 metre high waterfall and follow the Siq trail back to the Visitor Centre.

• Distance: 6 km
• Time to hike: 5-6 hours

This ‘dry’ trail is only hiked in winter as a guided group activity. The trail ascends from the Dead Sea Highway into the reserve, running parallel to the Dead Sea, which you can see during the hike. You’ll continue along some dry riverbeds, where you may see the horned Ibex that are protected within the reserve. After visiting the rock ‘statue’ of Lot’s wife, the hike brings you back to the Visitor Centre along a road for the last hour.

Hidan Adventure Centre

It’s worth knowing that there’s a second adventure centre located within the Wadi Mujid Biosphere Reserve, located in the upper part of the Wadi Mujib Biosphere Reserve, around an hour’s drive from Madaba. On the map it’s marked as al-hidan adventure centre and is signposted from Madaba.

The Hidan river valley has a permanent fresh water supply and offers an adventurous trail with natural pools and waterfalls. You should check with Wild Jordan before arriving and book this trail in advance as it may not run all the time.

Al-Hidan trail

This is a tough and adventurous guided trail, following the river through natural pools. You’ll be required to climb up waterfalls and cascades against the flow of the water, or jump or abseil from the rocks into the water. The trail ends at a water mill, where transport is provided for the return trip back to the Adventure Centre.

Other activities in Wadi Mujib Adventure Centre

There are some other adventure activities on offer at Wadi Mujib. However they did not seem to be running in August when we visited, so we were not sure if these are seasonal activities. It’s best to check in advance with Wild Jordan and take a guide where necessary.

Rock climbing at Wadi Mujib

There are 3 rock climbing routes close to the Wadi Mujib Adventure Centre of easy to moderate level. The routes are 10-15 metres high and set up for top rope climbing or lead climbing. Check in advance with Wild Jordan, to see if these climbing routes are open.

Zipline at Wadi Mujib

The zipline with two parallel cables allows two people to zipline at once. The cables run across the gorge close to the Wadi Mujib Adventure Centre, parallel with the Al Mujib bridge. Check in advance with Wild Jordan, to see whether the zipline is open, as we did not see it running when we were there.

Flora and fauna to look out for at Wadi Mujib

The Wadi Mujib Biosphere Reserve is a staging point for migratory birds such as white storks and Levant sparrows. At least nine species of birds of prey are known to breed in the reserve including the Little Owl and Long-legged Buzzard. You probably won’t see birds in the canyon, but are more likely to see them with a guide on the ‘dry’ trails in other less visited parts of the reserve.

The reserve is also home to the rare Nubian Ibex, a large mountain goat that was the symbol of the Moon god in ancient times. A captive breeding programme has brought the Ibex back from the brink of extinction, and there are now around 90 Ibex within the Wadi Mujib reserve. The best way to see the Ibex is on a winter hike on the Ibex Trail, guided from the Wadi Mujib Adventure Centre.

Tickets for Wadi Mujib

Tickets for the trails are sold in the Wadi Mujib Adventure Centre. Entry fees for the Siq Trail are 22 JD for non-Jordanians, 16 JD for Jordanians and 19 JD for residents. Entry fees for the dry Ibex trail that you can hike in winter is 21 JD for non-Jordanians, 12 JD for Jordanians and 17 JD for residents. The cost includes taxes and a guide is included for the Ibex (dry) trail but not for the Siq (wet) trail, which is self guided.

Both cash and cards were accepted to pay for tickets. However, when we hired a drybag they would only accept cash.

When is Wadi Mujib open?

The Wadi Mujib Adventure Centre opens at 8am and last entry for the self-guided Siq Trail is 3pm. The timing of starting the trail may also be determined by the limit of the Siq trail to 100-150 people. So if the maximum of people has already entered the trail, you may have a waiting time of up to 2 hours before you can start.

Other guided hiking trails tend to start at 8.00-8.30 am from the Wadi Mujib Adventure Centre.

Best month to visit Wadi Mujib

You are limited by the fact that the water trails such as the Siq at Wadi Mujib are only open in the summer months from 1 April to 31 October. This can also be variable, depending on weather conditions and water flow. If there is too much water and conditions are too dangerous, the whole trail will be closed, so it’s best to check in advance on the Wild Jordan Website or social channels.

Bear in mind that the water flow is highest in the spring and early summer after winter rainfall. Water levels drop through the summer and early autumn until the rains start again. When we visited in August the water was mostly knee or thigh deep, but at other times of year, you could be swimming through chest or neck deep water.

In winter, the dry Ibex trail is available for a guided hike between 1 November and 31 March.

Which day is best to visit Wadi Mujib?

While the month of your visit will likely be determined by other factors, you can at least try and plan to visit on a day when you’ll get the least crowded experience. Bear in mind that the Jordanian weekend is Friday and Saturday, when the Siq Trail will be busiest with local visitors.

In high season (May-June and September-October), at weekends and holiday periods when the trail will be busy, it’s best to arrive as early as possible in the day. This will mean that the car park is not yet full and you won’t have to wait as long to get on the trail, which is limited to 100 people. If the trail is already full, you may be asked to wait up to 2 hours before starting the trail.

Photography at Wadi Mujib

The Siq trail of Wadi Mujib is a certainly a photogenic setting and you’ll probably want to take some photos to share with your friends. If you bring a mobile phone, Go-pro or regular camera, you’ll also need a drybag to carry it in.

You may also want to wrap your camera in some plastic bags or extra padding against knocks on the rocks. Unless you are a pro-photographer, we recommend leaving the big expensive camera behind and just use a mobile phone or small compact camera.

It’s quite easy to take photos at the start of the trail, when you are wading through water with dry areas of pebbles at each side of the river bed. Once you arrive at the cascades there’s a chance to take some photos, then pack the camera away, while you tackle the ladders and boulders to ascend each cascade. In between the cascades and at the final waterfall you can find a secure spot and carefully take the camera out of the dry bag to take photos.

On the return journey you will come back the same way, but this time you may have to slide down the cascades under the direction of the guides there. You’ll be submerged in pools below the cascade, so this is the time to make sure your drybag is completely watertight. Also be aware that your hands will be wet when using the camera.

What to wear and bring to Wadi Mujib

The clothing advice below assumes that you are doing the Siq trail or one of the other wet trails. This is an adventurous canyoning activity, so you should dress accordingly. For ‘dry’ trails like the Ibex Trail you will not get wet, so can dress in normal hiking gear.

We found that quick dry sports t-shirt and sports shorts or cutoff leggings were ideal, layered over a swimsuit. You need clothing that will be light when wet, yet protect you from scrapes against the rocks and metal ladders. Men can wear swimming shorts with a t-shirt for added protection.

Although Jordan is a Muslim country, this kind of sports clothing seemed the norm for both men and women at Wadi Mujib. Ladies, it’s better to avoid skimpy swimwear with nothing over it, as it won’t protect you against the rocks and could invite unwanted attention from local men.

If you have long hair, it’s better to tie it back against the rush of water when you go through the cascades.

You’ll need to wear trainers, hiking sandals or water shoes that you don’t mind getting wet through. They need to be fairly substantial and secure, as you’ll be walking on the river bed, clambering over boulders and up metal ladders. Do not attempt this in flip flops or slip on sandals that will be washed away at the cascades.

Guy found that his Keen hiking sandals were ideal and I used my Keen walking shoes, although they were a bit heavy when soaked in water and took ages to dry out. If you have water shoes that have a sturdy sole, these would also be ideal. There are water shoes to rent at the Visitor Centre for 5JD, although we heard that they may not always have your size or may run out, so don’t rely on this.

On the Siq trail and other wet trails it’s mandatory to wear a lifejacket. These are provided in the visitor centre just after the ticket desk and before you enter the trail. The lifejackets do come in different sizes, although the staff member just told us to help ourselves, so we didn’t realise this at the time. So take a little time to choose a lifejacket that’s correctly sized and comfortable for you.

If you want to take anything with you on the Siq trail, such as a mobile or camera, you must take a dry bag. Assume that everything you take will be submerged in water and potentially battered by rocks and waterfalls or washed away.

We rented a dry bag at the visitor centre for 10 JD (cash only) and used it to carry our phone to take photos. While our drybag worked fine, if you rent one do check it over carefully for holes or leaks and close it securely. It might be worth taking a waterproof ziplock bag for extra protection of any mobile phones.

If you want to come prepared, you can buy a 5L or 10L drybag with a body strap , which can be used for any adventurous or water activities.

What to leave behind in a locker / car

This is what you should leave behind in a secure place, such as your hotel room or car if you are doing the Siq or other wet trails.

• Jewellery such as delicate necklaces, expensive gemstone rings or anything easily damaged, as it may get a battering on rocks or when climbing ladders or break and wash away.
• Water bottles unless you are prepared to carry them in a dry bag. Start the trail well hydrated and you should be fine for the 2 hours it takes there and back on the Siq trail, since you’re in a shady canyon. Don’t try to carry a water bottle in your hand as you need both hands free for climbing the cascades and it will wash away.
• Don’t pack food for the trail, as you can eat something before setting off or on your return in the cafe. Otherwise if you want to pack a snack like an energy bar, you need to put it in your dry bag.
• You don’t need a change of dry clothes on the trail. Leave these in your car and change once you are back in the visitor centre.
• Leave other loose items like sunglasses or hats behind as you’re in a shady canyon and they will get washed away.
• Your passport should stay in your hotel safe or locked in your car, as you don’t need it to buy tickets. However, if you are a Jordanian citizen or resident, you might need to show ID to get the reduced rate.

Facilities at Wadi Mujib Visitor Centre

The Wadi Mujib Adventure Centre is an attractive, modern facility with most of the facilities you will need. However, we did notice that not all services such as lockers or cafe were available or open.

Lockers and storage

We saw lockers at the Wadi Mujib adventure centre but they did not seem to be available or in use when we visited. This means that you’ll need to store anything you don’t take on the trail in your locked car.

Behind the ticket desk there were also small cubbyholes suitable to store a wallet or car keys, under the care of the staff there.

Food and drink

If you have a hire car, we recommend bringing some food and drink that you can consume before or after completing the trail. There’s a cafe at the visitor centre, but we weren’t sure if it was open when we were there. Also there were people smoking in the enclosed, air conditioned cafe area, so it smelt horrible.

We didn’t see any picnic areas near the visitor centre and the riverbed at the start of the trail is not ideal, since you need to climb down a ladder to reach it. If you want to have a meal after the excursion, you may be better to drive 20-30 minutes north from the visitor centre to the Dead Sea commercial area where there are shopping malls, cafes and resort hotels.

Changing rooms and bathrooms

There are male and female toilets that have a changing area within them at the visitor centre. This was where most people seemed to change before and after taking the trail.

Wild Jordan Gift Shop

There was a very nice Wild Jordan gift shop within the visitor centre that was just opening when were were there. The souvenirs on sale were well designed and locally made, so this is a good place to buy souvenirs that support local businesses and communities.

The free parking area by the visitor centre holds around 40-50 cars, but we heard that it fills up quickly in high season and at weekends. There’s a small overflow section by the entrance, but once this car park is full it could be a problem, since you’re on the main Dead Sea highway, with no other obvious places to park. Therefore if you are visiting at a busy time, it’s best to arrive early in the day, in order to find parking.

Where is Wadi Mujib?

Wadi Mujib Biosphere Reserve is located in the western part of Jordan, close to the Dead Sea. The Wadi Mujib Adventure Centre is a 85 km (1 hr 15 mins drive) from Jordan’s capital Amman, or 240 km (3 hrs drive) from the Red Sea resort of Aqaba to the south.

Most international travellers fly into either Queen Alia International Airport for Amman or King Hussein International Airport for Aqaba. From these cities, Wadi Mujib is best combined with a visit to the Dead Sea resorts of Jordan. Wadi Mujib is also an easy drive from major tourist sites such as Petra, Wadi Rum and the historic town of Madaba.

If driving, take care to put “Wadi Mujib Aventure Centre” into your mapping tool, which takes you to the visitor centre close to the Dead Sea on the Route 65 Jordan Valley Highway / Dead Sea Highway. We read that there is also Wadi Mujib Dam which is located high in the hills, so take care that you don’t navigate there by accident.

Getting to Wadi Mujib

If you visit Wadi Mujib Adventure Centre independently, you can get there in a number of ways.

• Perhaps easiest is to hire a car from either of the two international airports, then include Wadi Mujib in a circular tour of Jordan that takes in the other major highlights, such as Petra, Wadi Rum and the Dead Sea.
• Unfortunately there are no public bus options that we could find to Wadi Mujib.
• If you are staying at one of the Dead Sea Resorts, your hotel can easily arrange a taxi transfer to Wadi Mujib, which is a 20-30 minute drive from most of the resorts. Try to arrange a driver who will wait for you while you do the Siq Trail, so that they can look after your belongings, in case the lockers are not operational.
• If travelling independently but without a car, you are perhaps better to join one of the excursions that can be arranged from Amman. We’ve given some examples below, or enquire at your hotel for tour recommendations.

Guided tours for Wadi Mujib

Wadi Al Mujib Adventures from Amman and other locations: This private tour includes pickup from your hotel in Amman or other locations, transport to the Wadi Mujib Adventure Centre where you undertake the Siq Trail alone, before the transfered back to Amman. The whole trip is around 5 hours.

Wadi Mujib Siq Trail with panoramic tour of Amman and optional Dead Sea Visit: This 5 hour tour includes pickup in Amman, transport to the Wadi Mujib Adventure Centre where you undertake the Siq Trail, then an optional visit to the Dead Sea beach where you can swim and take lunch.

Safety at Wadi Mujib

Wadi Mujib is a showcase tourism attraction for Jordan and as such the general level of security is good. The trail is closely monitored by Wild Jordan and will be closed at times when the water level is too high or the conditions are dangerous.

However, do bear in mind that this is an adventurous activity, so you need to consider your own physical abilities before undertaking the Siq trail, which is self guided.

While life jackets are provided and are mandatory, there are no helmets provided. We would expect helmets to be mandatory at any similar adventure or canyoning activity in Europe.

We also felt that calling the Siq trail ‘self-guided’ is a bit misleading. True that you do not need to pay extra to hire a guide, unlike all the other trails. However, there are three major cascades, where you need to climb up ladders or scramble over boulders to ascend them and slide down the rocks to descend them.

We felt that in the interests of safety, there should be at least one guide at each of the cascades to help people and monitor safety. However we only saw one guide at the second of the three cascades. It seemed to us that the lack of guides at potentially dangerous points, combined with no helmets, could be an “accident waiting to happen”.

Unless you are experienced in this kind of adventure activity, I wouldn’t recommend taking this trail on your own, but rather go with at least one other person. This particularly applies to solo female travellers, who may find themselves targeted for unwanted attention from local men or guides. If you have an accident in the canyon, the nearest medical help is at the Wadi Mujib Adventure Centre.

Having said that, the cascades get gradually more challenging and there are ropes and ladders to help you climb them. So if you feel you have reached the limit of your physical ability, you can turn back at any time. We decided not to tackle the final cascade leading to the waterfall as we were worried it would be too much. However, we still really enjoyed the trail and it was one of the big highlights of our Jordan trip.

Other concerns

We read mixed reviews about the guides at Wadi Mujib. Some online reviews mentioned guides that were disinterested or giving unwanted attention to women, although we didn’t personally experience this.

Our main observation was that there didn’t seem to be enough guides around the cascades to monitor safety – we only saw one in the whole gorge. We also felt that the guides should be more easy to identify, wearing an obvious logo or high visibility t-shirt.

The reason we mention this is that we were approached by a local man who we assumed was a guide at one of the cascades. He kindly helped us up the first cascade and took our photo at the top. We assumed that he was an official guide who was assigned to help everyone at that cascade.

Instead he followed us up the gorge, continually offering us help as if he was our private guide. As we started to feel uncomfortable with his attentions we let him go on and made our return back down the gorge, only to find that he had followed us.

We were not sure if this was a local man who hoped that he would get some tip at the end of the trail for helping us. Or was he was an official guide who was off duty or who should have been monitoring the gorge for everyone?

To prevent this slightly uncomfortable experience, and bearing in mind that this is a chargeable activity, we feel that there should be more official guides monitoring what is an adventurous and potentially hazardous canyoning experience. We also wished that it would be easier to distinguish the employees of Wadi Mujib Activity Centre from locals who may try to befriend tourists and scam them.

Don’t let these reservations put you off, we had a great time and just want you to be aware of these kinds of issues.

Who is Wadi Mujib suitable for?

• You need to be aged 18 or over in order to take the trail. ID may need to be shown for anyone who may not look 18.
• You need to be a swimmer, as while unlikely to be out of your depth, you may at times have to slide into pools and be fully submerged.
• We are fit and in our early 60s, and we very much enjoyed the trail, although we decided to miss out on the final cascade and waterfall, because it looked a bit too challenging.
• The Siq Trail is self-guided and suitable for most ages and abilities, provided you are reasonably fit and have good upper body strength. As the cascades get progressively harder, you can judge your own ability and turn back at any time.
• The other water trails (Canyon and Malaqui Trail )are guided and involve abseiling down a waterfall, before completing the Siq Trail in reverse. Therefore this is a true canyoning experience that’s best suited to the fit and adventurous traveller seeking in adrenalin thrill.
• If you would like to try the Siq Trail, but are worried about your ability, you could also enquire about hiring an individual guide at the Visitor Centre. This would much reduce the risk at the cascades, as you would have an experienced guide to give you a hand and show you the safest routes to navigate them.

Where to stay near Wadi Mujib

The closest place to stay to the Wadi Mujib Visitor Centre are the Wadi Mujib Chalets , which are run by Wild Jordan. There are 15 individual chalets, each with a double bedroom and bathroom.

The chalets are located are on the shores of the Dead Sea, with a private terrace to sit out or swing in your hammock. Steps lead down the stony slope to a place where you can swim (or more likely float around) in the Dead Sea.

There’s a communal restaurant that serves buffet style breakfast and evening meals. As the chalets are very popular they tend to book up well in advance.

Another good option is to combine your visit to Wadi Mujib with a stay at one of the Dead Sea Resorts. Most are within 20-30 minutes drive of Wadi Mujib, offering a more luxurious resort experience. Complete Guide to Canyoning in Wadi Mujib

Wadi Mujib is one of the most adventurous things to do in Jordan. The vast nature reserve is known for its massive gorges which make a wonderful place for canyoning . I’m not exaggerating when I say that hiking in Wadi Mujib will be one of the best experiences that you’ll have in the region.

However, the right preparation is key if you’d like to make the most of your adventure. In this article, I’m going to share with you all you need to know about Wadi Mujib and how to be prepared for your canyoning experience.

What is Wadi Mujib?

Wadi Mujib (or Wadi al Mujib) is a nature reserve in the Western part of Jordan. It’s known to be the lowest nature reserve on earth . Wadi Mujib runs along the shores of the Dead Sea which is the lowest point on earth.

A special feature about Wadi al Mujib are the great differences in altitude . Its lowest point is 400 meters (1,312 ft) below sea level and its highest point a stunning 900 meters (2952 ft) above sea level. It goes without saying that a place with such remarkable altitude differences offers incredible scenery . In fact, the vast area is full of beautiful canyons, a rich flora and fauna and great panoramic views.

The foot of Wadi al Mujib is the part that’s most interesting for visitors. That’s where you find some impressive gorges which are filled with the rainwater from the highlands of the reserve.

Wadi Mujib Trails

Wadi Mujib nature reserve stretches over an area of 212 km² (81 m²) which is about one third of the area of the neighboring Dead Sea. You won’t be hiking the entire reserve though. In fact, the trails start at the same location which is safe and easy to access. More on this below.

There are four official trails in Wadi Mujib:

• Canyon Trail
• Malaqi Trail

The most commonly chosen trail is the Siq Trail . It starts at the Wadi Mujib visitor’s center and leads you through the canyons until you reach a large waterfall . From there, you’ll swim back with the stream. Since you will be canyoning through the gorges along the water, you don’t need a map for Wadi Mujib. You literally can’t go wrong as the water just runs straight through the canyons. Plan about 2-3 hours for the trail.

Do I Need a Guide for Wadi Mujib?

One of the most frequently asked questions that I get on Wadi Mujib is whether or not you need a guide. While for most places guides are purely optional, I recommend that you get a guide for Wadi Mujib. That’s especially true if you’re traveling solo.

The reason why I recommend you to hire a guide isn’t because you’d not find your way. Like I said, you can’t go wrong when on the Siq Trail. The reason why you should have a guide in Wadi Mujib is because the canyons hold various surprises. You’ll need to climb up some stairs and rocks which can not only be slippery but also difficult to see because of the water stream running through the gorges. Besides, you’ll walk up small waterfalls (and glide down on your way back).

Guides know the gorges in and out and will be able to tell you how to approach every obstacle on the way. Even if you’re a good hiker, it gives a good feeling to have someone by your side who can tell you where to pay special attention.

Depending on the season and the time of the day, there aren’t many visitors at the same point of the trail. That said, having a guide adds to your safety , whether as a solo-traveler, couple or group. You don’t want to get stuck at some rock and give up, or get hurt because you slip.

My recommendation is to book your guide online prior to your trip. The availability of guides on site is limited (there aren’t always guides available on site). If you’re visiting without a guide, you can purchase your tickets on site (no reservation required).

Travel Planning Information

Don’t come unprepared. That’s especially true for a place like Wadi Mujib.

Entrance Fees

The entrance fee to Wadi Mujib is JD 21 (approx. €26 or $29) for tourists. Jordanians pay a reduced fee of JD 15 (water trails) or JD 12 (Ibex trail). The rates are for self-guided tours , which means the price includes only the entrance to the area, excluding equipment and guide.

You can rent equipment on site or bring your own. If you’re a tourist in Jordan, you’d probably want to rent the equipment on site.

• Life jacket (Mandatory, available for free.)
• Locker (Optional, available for free. Recommended for your valuables.)
• Water shoes (Optional. Costs about €6 / $7. In my opinion, water shoes aren’t necessary if you wear sturdy shoes. See my clothes recommendations below.)
• Dry bag (Optional. Costs about €11 / $ 12. I recommend a dry bag to keep your phone with you. However, given the cost of the rental, it’s a better option to purchase your own dry bag online. It’s a handy accessory that will be useful at many places.)

The price of a guide varies. Generally said, it’s about €35 or $40 for the Siq Trail for a small group (exclusive of entrance fee, equipment, transportation).

Opening Hours

During summer , the Wadi Mujib is open daily , 7 days a week from 8 a.m. to 6.30 p.m. The reserve is only accessible from 1st April to 31st October. Due to safety reasons, it’s closed between November and March .

Depending on the weather, it might be open a bit longer (until early/mid November or closed a few days earlier in October). The same applies for spring (the start of the season might begin a few days earlier or later). That’s because heavy rainfall in the highlights results in heavy streams in the gorges of Wadi Mujib which makes it too dangerous to visit.

During summer months, there is very little to no rain in Jordan which makes Wadi Mujib a safe place to visit .

Note that you need to leave the reserve (end your trail) by the closing time. The last admission is usually around 3 p.m. If you’re going for a self-guides tour on the Siq Trail, you can come at any time between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. There’s no need to book a slot in advance . However, the Ibex trail (dry hiking trail) only starts at 8 a.m.

During Ramadan the site closes at 3 p.m., so you should start your hike at noon at the latest. Note that there are no guided tours available during Ramadan.

Note: Wadi Mujib trails are only accessible for people over 18 years at age. That’s because the water trails aren’t suitable for children.

What to Wear in Wadi Mujib?

The clothing in Wadi Mujib differs from what you’ll wear when exploring other places in the country such as Petra or Wadi Rum desert . For Wadi Mujib, you should absolutely wear sport’s clothes .

Long skinny pants are the preferred choice for both men and women safety reasons (to protect your skin from the rocks). Girls should wear a dark color t-shirt to avoid the fabric from being transparent when wet. You’ll wear a lifejacket over your t-shirt when on the trail.

Regarding shoes, I recommend non-slip sport shoes . If you don’t have any, I recommend you to buy them when visiting Jordan. You’ll also need them to comfortably explore places like Petra. Alternatively, you can rent water shoes on site .

Don’t wear a dress, a skirt nor a beautiful blouse when in Wadi Mujib. As a rule of thumb, you should wear the same clothes as you’d wear when going for a run.

How to Get to Wadi Mujib?

While Mujib reserve is very vast, there is one point of access from where all trails start. The visitor center (entrance) of Wadi Mujib is called Adventure Center. You can simply type the name “Wadi Mujib Adventure Center” into Google Maps and navigate your way there (here’s the exact location ).

You can easily get to Wadi Mujib from Amman , the Dead Sea or Petra by taking the Dead Sea Highway (Highway 65). Infrastructure is good and driving in Jordan is safe . Free parking is available on site. Note that there is no public transportation near Wadi Mujib.

Accommodations

Wadi Mujib is a very rural area and the choice of accommodation is limited. Make sure to book your overnight stay well in advance. You can either stay in one of the Dead Sea resorts (about a 30-45 minute drive from the Adventure Center) or at Mujib Chalets which are across the street.

If you don’t want to spend the night in the area, you could leave Amman very early in the morning, have a stopover in Wadi Mujib, and continue to Petra the same day. You can change your clothes on site after the hike.

Wadi Mujib is a spellbinding canyon that towers above the Mujib River and stretches along 70 kilometers. The Mujib River in Jordan flows into the Dead Sea which is the lowest place on earth. There are many excursions that allow visitors the chance to trek through the water, beneath the towering canyons, and into the Dead Sea itself. Sections of Wadi Mujib also cover the Mujib Biosphere Reserve which is home to a number of rare wildlife species.

A trip to Wadi Mujib is a canyoning adventure like no other and it is arguably one of the best ways to enjoy Jordan’s Dead Sea. Those looking for a unique pit stop along The King’s Highway can take a break at the gorge to admire the stunning vistas below.

Wadi Mujib spans across 70 kilometers of valleys, towns, and mountains. It begins at the Desert Highway and ends at the opening of the iconic Dead Sea. The canyon itself is an impressive 4 kilometers wide and one kilometer tall. The entrance into the Mujib Biosphere Reserve is around one hour and 20 minutes from the capital city of Amman .

Wadi Mujib was once known as the Arnon Valley which is believed to be the destination where Moses led the Israelites across.

Things to Do at Wadi Mujib

Hike through the water of the Wadi Mujib Gorge that flows into the Dead Sea. The trek leads to beautiful waterfalls and is a perfect activity during the warm summer months. Within the gorge, many tour companies also organize canyoning and abseiling adventures.

Mujib Reserve Biosphere

The Mujib Biosphere Reserve covers an impressive 212 square kilometers. The reserve spans between the King’s Highway and the shore of the Dead Sea and includes many notable sites such as Ma’in Hot Springs Resort and the Mujib River. The reserve also protects seven wadis and the wildlife that resides within them. Visitors can look out for the Syrian Wolf and Caracal mountain cat. The entrance into Mujib Biosphere Reserve is around one hour and 20 minutes from the capital city Amman.

Ma’in Hot Springs Resort

Ma’in is a glorious hot spring waterfall resort situated right beside the Dead Sea. Nestled just 30 kilometers from the city of Madaba , visitors can find themselves relaxing beside the Ma’in waterfalls beneath a stunning mountainous backdrop is only 15 minutes. At an impressive 264 meters below sea level, this resort is set within a tranquil landscape and visitors can choose to stay here for a few hours or even a few days. The resort also has excellent dining facilities along with an array of rejuvenating spa treatments .

Hiking Trails

With such a diverse landscape, there are plenty of things to do for those who like to explore the great outdoors. The reserve boasts some fascinating hiking trails ranging in lengths and difficulty. A popular hiking route is the Mujib Trail which is a highly challenging route covering 15 kilometers of flora and fauna . The Siq Trail is an easy to moderate route which takes hikers over the dam and in between the sandstone cliffs to the base of an impressive waterfall. Most of the trails within the reserve lead through water at varying levels so be prepared to get wet. For adrenaline junkies, try the Canyon Trail which gives hikers the opportunity to descend a 20 meter high waterfall.

How to Visit Wadi Mujib

All trails within the Mujib Biosphere Reserve must be booked in advance. All trails include an experienced guide and require a minimum of five people. There is only one trail which is open during winter and if you wish to get into the water you will need to visit between April and October. As a price guide, the Mujib Trail costs 45JD (64 USD) per person for a seven-hour hike. Visitors to the reserve will need to book at the RSCN’s Wild Jordan office in Amman. Those seeking to take part in a canyoning adventure in the gorge can book a trek in the cities of Amman and Madaba .

From relaxing beneath a majestic waterfall at the Ma’in Hot Springs Resort to a white-knuckle water adventure, there is plenty to do in Wadi Mujib. Wadi Mujib is ideal for families who are looking for something to keep the children entertained. It is a great way to experience the Dead Sea and is something that shouldn’t be missed.

Wadi Mujib is located to the east of the Dead Sea and is fondly known as the Grand Canyon of Jordan. It is part of the Mujib Biosphere Reserve, which is the lowest biosphere in the world. Wadi Mujib is known for its stunning gorge hiking within the reserve. It is very popular with those looking for an adventurous activity in Jordan.

Wadi Mujib Information

When most people say “Wadi Mujib” they are referring to the Wadi Mujib Siq Trail, a seasonal hiking trail along the river in between towering sandstone cliffs. However, there are also several other hiking trails in the Mujib nature reserve.

The Wadi Mujib biosphere reserve is a large area of land that has several rivers flowing from the nearby mountains giving it year round water supply. It spans over 200 square kilometers. These rivers all run off eventually in the Dead sea. It is home to over 300 species of plants, 10 species of carnivores and several species of birds.

Wadi Mujib Visitor Center

Wadi Mujib is located South East of Amman and about an hour’s drive depending on where you are coming from in Amman . The Wadi Mujib Visitor Center is located on the Jordan Valley Highway on the east coast of the Dead Sea. It is about halfway along the Dead Sea, so much farther than the Dead Sea Hotel area. Take HWY 40 until it becomes HWY65 (Jordan Valley Highway) near the Baptism site. Stay on the Jordan Valley Highway past the Dead Sea Hotel area and past the Main Hot Springs.

Wadi Mujib Hiking Trails

The most popular hike, and arguably the most thrilling, is the Wadi Mujib Siq Trail. Offering some of the most unique hiking in Jordan, the Siq Trail takes visitors up a narrow canyon between towering sandstone cliffs. It is a little over 1km long and ends at a waterfall. This popular Jordan hike is seasonal and closed in the  winter  (usually April 1st to October 31st) but often opens late if there are heavy spring rains.

You must be 18 to do this hike and it requires a significant amount of upper body strength as ropes and ladders are used to climb throughout the water. You will get wet and you will likely find yourself fully submerged in the water. Leave everything except a go pro in your car. They do offer locker storage as well.

Opened in April 2008, the Mujib Chalets feature 15 double rooms with some of the best Dead Sea views along the coast. They are an ideal place from which to explore the unique landscape of the Wadi Mujib biosphere reserve or enjoy the medicinal properties of the Dead Sea. The chalets open all year round.

DEAD SEA SPA – Dead Sea Spa is the most economical choice for a nice hotel on the beach and is located in the hotel area of the Dead Sea, just north of the Wadi Mujib visitor center. The pools are nice, the staff is friendly and the rooms are good. They have a small waterpark for kids and a larger waterslide, perfect if you are traveling with a family. The Dead Sea Spa has a good chunk of beach access with mud for guests. There are showers right by the Dead Sea to shower off or get water or mud out of your eyes (trust me it stings) and there are a few pools for swimming and lounging. They have evening entertainment on the outside deck and guests can opt for a breakfast only room, or breakfast and dinner options.

MOVENPICK DEAD SEA – Movenpick Resort and Spa Dead Sea offers luxurious infinity pools and modern rooms. It is also located in the hotel area of the Dead Sea, one of Jordan’s best beaches . It boasts 20 acres of gardens and a massive spa. It has 9 restaurants and bars and features wifi inside and outside. It offers beach access to float at the Dead Sea as well as a kids club. It offers packages with breakfast and breakfast and dinner.

KEMPINSKI ISHTAR DEAD SEA – Kempinski Hotel Ishtar Dead Sea is also one of the most beautiful properties on the Dead Sea. It is also located in the hotel area of the Dead Sea. Its pools offer ultimate relaxation and views of the Dead Sea below. It is exceptionally clean and staff are friendly. It offers beach access for guests to float.

RAMADA DEAD SEA – Ramada Resort Dead Sea is an economical option at the Dead Sea, but it is not located on the beach. It is a nice hotel, rated as a 4 star. It has two pools, one of which is heated in the winter. There is a shuttle that runs all day that will take you to a private beach. You can also walk if you do not mind. If you are visiting on a budget, this is probably your best option, but compare it to the other 4 star properties. It is also located in the hotel area of the Dead Sea.

HOLIDAY IN DEAD SEA – Holiday Inn Resort Dead Sea is one of the most economical options to stay at the Dead Sea. The one downside to this hotel is that it is located across the street from the Dead Sea so it does not have direct beach access. For the price, I personally think you are better off with the Dead Sea Spa. It is also located in the hotel area of the Dead Sea.

Expensive This is really not worth visiting.. first for the price 20 Euro, entrance fee and the remote location. You are not allowed to roam around at you're leisure. You get in a bus with a chaperone at the visitor center. that drive you about 2 km to the Greek orthodox church souvenir shop to buy stuff then walk a about 600 meters to a site of Jesus baptismal a wooden structure and dry river.. then walk another 700 meter to the river jordan.. border with israel.. 5 min.. turn around walk back to another souvenir shop, where you wait for the bus back to the visitor center, you're not allowed to walk around or be out of the chaperone site.. he doesn't really explain anything.. just sit there.. you will pass 2 checkpoint with soldiers.. so not worth it don't waste you're time or money.. oh and the bus leaves on the hour Read more Written May 8, 2024

Last month, I had the opportunity to travel to Jordan with my peers from Georgetown University. During our visit, we explored iconic places including but not limited to Petra, the Amman Citadel, the Baptismal Site in the Jordan River, and the Dead Sea. We also immersed ourselves in interreligious dialogue with the local community by engaging with universities, schools, and refugee camps. While the trip was mostly based on Christian-Muslim interfaith dialogue, experiences such as this one allowed us to explore local customs and traditions beyond the classroom setting. Basel was my driver and he made sure I had plenty of time to arrive at Wadi Rum and have my 4-hour Jeep tour in time for the free train ride which was fantastic and worth the time to see it. I was able to climb the Um Fruth Rock Bridge. Basel's English is excellent and he is a safe driver and I would highly recommend him. Zaid tours made our whole trip to Jordan seamless, convenient and well organised. We were initially greeted at the airport in customs to arrange our visa exemption and were then escorted to our lovely driver for the following days; Mahmoud. He spoke English very well, was genuine, lovely and treated us as if we were his daughters. Our 5 star accommodation at each destination lived up to the hype, with breakfast and dinners included. The food selection was traditional, delicious and of high quality. Our private tour guide Ana’s at Petra was exceptional and passionately took footage for us to remember this experience. Wadi Rum was out of this world, our ufo experience was one to tick off the bucket list. Quasey was very bubbly and had a great sense of humour. We had a wonderful jeep tour with more great photos. The people, hotels, food, excursions and of course our guide Mahmoud. Mahmoud was knowledgable, patient (we were always a bit late meeting him) and always in touch with us. He took very good care of us every single day. His car was super comfortable- I had the best naps in that car! And he always had water and he even gifted me with some delicious biscuits after I said they were my favourite.I will definitely come back to Jordan and ask him to guide us again! Time flies, I was visiting your amazing country back in beginning/mid November. I had bought a return flight and was not sure how to progress from there. I have always in the past organised the travel around myself (hire car/public transport), booked the hotels and planned where to go and visit. However, I asked Zaid Tours and Travel to give me a quote and suggest an itinerary for the nearly 2 weeks I was going to be in Jordan. I decided to have a driver instead of driving around myself as I wanted to see as much as possible and enjoy the scenery, this was the best decision ever. Zaid came back with a very full and excellent itinerary at a very good price, this was for entry to all sites, private driver around everywhere and all hotels booked as well as organising tour guides at some places. A special thanks goes to my driver Hassan Alqurnih, who made an already amazing trip, a special one. He went above and beyond what he needed to do, even down to my favourite Jordanian coffee which he had ready and we shared in the morning before the days adventure. He was the driver, the tour guide, the organizer and more importantly, a friend. For sure he was the one who made the trip very special and felling very personalised. I felt in safe hands, he for sure knows the whole of Jordan and the people like the back of his hand. He was very flexible, from when we met in the morning, for instance extra early at Petra, changed some of the itinerary, have a longer time at the Dead-sea. Also to the point that my return flight was cancelled and I therefore had an extra day, he organised I stayed at the same hotel in Amman, suggested a day trip out and even took me to the airport a 4am. During my trip I got to know the country, it’s culture and people well, through Hassan. He took me to some of the places he liked to eat with his friends and family, these were my best meals and through his courtesy and knowledge, I also felt I got an insight into Jordan and it’s people. We had many of conversation about the tourist sights but also culture, traditions, people, religion and the ongoing conflict in Gaza. He gave me an amazing impression of a wonderful people and their country. Hassan Alqurnih and his family will always be more than welcome to stay at our place if they ever comes to Europa. The Mujib River (also called the Arnon Stream) is a river that runs through Jordan and empties into the Dead Sea . The river runs for 70km, 4m of which flows through Wadi al-Mujib, the Mujib Gorge. Sections of this beautiful wadi have become popular tourist sites like the Mujib Biosphere - the lowest Nature Reserve in the world - that stands at the western end of the river. The river stretches from the Desert Highway to the Dead Sea, and the gorge has a 1km drop to the water below.

When one thinks about Jordan, slim are the chances of associating this beautiful, rich nation with powerful waterfalls and wet routes across the lower lands of the Dead Sea. But Jordan is a country full of surprises and, when least expected, is ready to satisfy even the most adventurous souls. This guide to Wadi Mujib in Jordan will take you around hidden canyons, surprising path and hidden gems.

Wadi Mujib. The lowest nature reserve on Earth

If you never heard about Wadi Mujib I don’t blame you. I’ve learnt of this little gem of Jordan just a couple of months before my trip, while I was planning my itinerary. No one of my friends who have visited Jordan ever heard before, not many blogs about it, not many info on the trails. The only photos popping around Google were enough to get my heart at it first sight. When I saw the pictures of those red canyons filled with crystalline blue waters, I knew I had to get there. The Wadi Mujib trail is a perfect adventure for a Jordan 7 days itinerary as it will give you a lot of adrenaline moments and perfect photo opportunities.

Wadi Mujib Biosphere Reserve

What is fondly known as “Wadi Mujib” is actually part of larger area named as Wadi Mujib Biosphere Reserve. This is located on the east of the Dead Sea and geologically linked to the formation of the lowest place on Earth.

Indeed, when the Dead Sea started dropping below the sea level, thousands of years ago, it flooded the surrounding lower areas of the canyons located against its coast. This caused a slow but continuous formation of sediments that blocked the nearby rivers access to the lake. While most rivers eventually managed to resume their course, the Wadi Mujib river broke into the sandstone. 20,000 years of powerful water passing through a narrow cleft became finally a deep gorge which is now famous as the Siq (yes like the Petra one!).

The reserve was created in 1987 by the Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature (RSCN) in order to safeguard the 212 square-kilometre of natural landscape and wildlife. The RSCN is operated on the ground by Wild Jordan who is responsible of the local communities, ecotourism and environmental impact of tourism on locations like Wadi Mujib and the Dana Biosphere Reserves .

In 2011, UNESCO declared Wadi Mujib a biosphere reserve making it the lowest nature reserve on Earth. The reserve extends in between Karak and Madaba encompassing over 300 species of plants, migratory birds, wildlife and endangered fauna.

How to access the Wadi Mujib Trails

Most of the Wadi Mujib Trails are accessible via the Mujib Adventure Centre . This is located on the Aqaba- Dead Sea Highway and very close to the Dead Sea resorts area. The Al-Hidan Trail is the only trail accessible from the Hidan Adventure Centre.

Getting to Wadi Mujib from the Dead Sea

If you are located in the proximity of the Dead Sea, the route is pretty straightforward. Just need to follow the route 65 Jordan Valley Highway aka Dead Sea Highway until you find the Wadi Mujib adventure centre.

Pay attention with the Google direction as the satnav doesn’t exactly know where to stop as the whole area is named as “Wadi Mujib/Wadi AlMujib”. You need to stop at the Mujib Adventure centre which is located right on the route 65.

It’s easy to spot and there will be directions nearby. To make your life easier, I pinned the exact position of the adventure centre below (also because the directions on Google are in Arabic).

How to reach Wadi Mujib from Amman

If you are driving in Jordan , getting to Wadi Mujib from Amman takes less 1 hour and 30 mins. Once you get out from Amman, the directions are the same as the ones from the Dead Sea above.

Parking at the Wadi Mujib Adventure Centre

The Wadi Mujib Adventure Centre has a large parking space free of charge. Nevertheless, during peak times, this might be very crowded, particularly if larges couches park there. I would recommend to go as early as possible because by midday you might not find any parking space left.

Guide to Wadi Mujib. What to pack for canyoning in Jordan

You don’t need a specific technical equipment for canyoning in Jordan. However, despite most of the trails includes swimming in large deep pools, going there with a bikini is not a great idea. Indeed, you may find sharps rocks and slippery trails which may leave your upper legs and tummy exposed to scratches and cuts. Ergo, a swimming suit under a layer of fitness technical clothes is enough to enjoy your adventure. I had a swimming suit, a light t-shirt and some running shorts that I removed when we reached the last waterfall. My husband wore a sleeveless t-shirt and the swimming suit.

Anti-slippery shoes are warmly recommended to avoid getting hurt and walk comfortably the whole trail. You may rent them at the Mujib Adventure Centre for 5 JD. However, the quality of that shoes is not the best, they are made of plastic and looked uncomfortable to walk. I decided to bring them with me from home and I found these water shoes from Dechatlon worth every penny!

You can leave all your belongings in the car (at your risk) but if you want to take some expensive gears with you like your camera and phone, its better to buy a dry bag. We bought this one from Amazon and it was perfect for keeping our stuff safe from water! The bag also float into the water so it’s not eavy to take on the trail.

Guide to Wadi Mujib Jordan. The Siq Trail

The Siq Trail is the one we adventured while visiting the area. It’s known as the “easiest” among all the Wadi Mujib trails and it’s currently registered as the only trail accessible without a guide.

How to access to the Siq Trail

The Siq Trail is currently accessible via the Mujib Adventure centre. You can park your car for free and once in the centre, you have to register your interest in accessing the trail. As in our case, there might be crowd and it may take a few hours before you are actually allowed to enter.

We arrived at 9 am and we’ve been granted access around 11 am. This because access is granted only in small groups to not overload the narrow gorge with people. The person in charge of your registration will call your name, make you sign a disclosure, pay and direct you to the life jackets. Then you are ready to go!

The Siq Trail route info

The trail open from 1st April to 31st October. However, this largely depends on the weather conditions. Indeed, rainfall determines the strength of the river flow and your possibility to access the trail. When the flow is too strong, the path is dangerous. Ergo, the trail is closed. The trail is marked as “Self-guided” and its grade “Easy to Moderate”. Nevertheless, despite the first part of the trail is very easy (low stream walk). The second part may be difficult for people who are not fit or never done canyoning before. Of course, you can stop and go back at any time. The Distance to cover is 1.5 km and this will take 2-3 hours (back and forward). The opening times are from 8 am to 3 pm.

The price to enter is 21 JD that is around (26£ or 29 $).

Our experience in the Siq Trail.

I admit that, after watching a couple of YouTube videos, I was in doubt whether my level of fitness was good enough for completing the trail. Indeed, this adventure was my first one after the pregnancy+pandemic. What you can’t see from the pictures, are the many waterfalls you have to climb bare hands or with the help of ropes (and without any helmet). This will require a good upper body strength. I was really in doubt still in the morning, when the temptation of lingering a couple of hours more at the Movenpick Dead Sea was super strong.

In the end, I am really happy we didn’t stay at the hotel. I am also happy that my husband encouraged me to believe in my strength and push myself out of my comfort zone. Something I apparently forgot how to do during the long pandemic seclusion! Indeed, the last couple of waterfalls were particularly tricky to climb and required a physical strength I forgot I had. When we reached the last big pool with the waterfall I was so happy I couldn’t stop smiling.

The Canyon Trail

The Canyon Trail is the second “wet trail” of the Wadi Mujib reserve. You should not confuse this with the Siq as this trail requires a guide for its challenging route.

Similar to the Siq trail, the Canyon trail is open from April to October according to the weather conditions. Also this trail departs from the Mujib Adventure Centre. However, instead of following the gorge of the Siq, it follows the Wadi Mujib river downstream along the Dead Sea highway. One of the highlight of the trail, is the spectacular 20 mt waterfall you’ll descend with the help of a guide.

I haven’t personally done this trail, but it’s recorded as moderate-difficult. So, I wouldn’t attempt the adventure unless one feels very fit for it.

To complete the trail you’ll need at least 4 hours. This will depart every morning at 8.30 from the Adventure Centre.

The cost to enter the Canyon Trail is 31 JD

The Malaqi Trail

The Malaqi Trail is considered the most difficult of all the trails departing from the Mujib Aventure Centre.

The Malaqi trail incorporate parts of the Canyon Trail and Siq Trail in a longer and complex route. Indeed, the completion of the route is expected to take from 5 to 7 hours, depending on the skills of the participants. As the other trails, also this one is open from April to October, weather wise.

The starting point is the Mujib Adventure Centre at 8 am. It’s mandatory to have a guide with you. The Malaqi trail will join the Siq trail after descending the big 20 mt waterfall.

The Ibex Trail

This trail is considered the only “winter trail” of Wadi Mujib. Indeed, it is open from only from November to March when the other trails are likely inaccessible.

Also this route departs from the Wadi Mujib, it’s graded as “moderate”. The Ibex trail is a dry trail, so there is no water walks on the reoute. To complete the route will take 5 to 6 hours. The trail is marked by steep climbs that follow a number of dry wadis along the Dead Sea Highway. The peculiarity of this trail is that you may spot the beautiful Nubian Ibex along the way.

The cost to access the trail is 17 JD.

Al-Hidan Trail

The Al-Hidan Trail is the only trail of the Mujib Natural Reserve that doesn’t start at the Mujib Adventure Centre. Indeed, this departs from the Hidan Adventure Centre that is located in the upper part of the reserve.

The Al-Hidan trail is marked as a moderate route of about 5 km. This is a wet trail, meaning that you’ll need to swim or walk into the water. Unlike the other trails of Wadi Mujib, Al-Hidan Trail is open all year around (subject to weather condition). The trail is developed around a series of pool and waterfalls that end on a Ancient Wheat Mill. From here, a complimentary bus will take visitors back to the starting point.

Where to stay at the Wadi Mujib Reserve

If you want to spend the night nearby the Wadi Mujib Reserve, the best place is surely the Mujib Chalets . These are 15 private chalet located opposite to the adventure centre on the shores of the Madash peninsula. They opened in 2008 and each of them has a double bedroom, private terrace on the dead sea and toilets. There is also a communal area with a restaurant providing traditional Jordanian cuisine. The chalet cost around 92£ per night for 2 people, including breakfast. Unfortunately, there’s a catch. It’s almost impossible to find one available! Indeed, they are almost always fully booked unless you book almost a year before.

As you can expect, we’ve been unlucky about this and all the chalet were fully booked for our dates when I booked our trip. So we decided to give our-self a treat and stay at the beautiful Mövenpick Dead Sea . We had the best time here (so much that I was almost in doubt about going to canyoning!). Of course, being a 5-stars resort prices are a little bit higher than the modest Mujib Chalets ranging around £250-500 per night for 2 people (excluding breakfast). However, service was impeccable, they have a private Dead Sea beach and the resort is just at 20 mins from the Mujib Adventure Centre.

We can’t honestly complaint about it.

The Mujib Biosphere Reserve is the lowest nature reserve in the world, with a spectacular array of scenery near the east coast of the Dead Sea. The Reserve is located within the deep Wadi Mujib gorge, which enters the Dead Sea at 410m below sea level. The Reserve extends to the Karak and Madaba mountains to the north and south, reaching 900 metres above sea level in some places. This 1,300m variation in elevation, combined with the valley's year- round water flow from seven tributaries, means that Wadi Mujib enjoys a magnificent bio-diversity that is still being explored and documented today. Over 300 species of plants, 10 species of carnivores and numerous species of permanent and migratory birds have been recorded. Some of the remote mountain and valley areas are difficult to reach, and thus offer safe havens for rare species of cats, goats and other mountain animals. Mujib's sandstone cliffs are an ideal habitat for one of the most beautiful mountain goats in the world, the horned Ibex.

The trail starts at Mujib Adventure Center where you will take the cantilevered walkway and follow the course of the river between the towering sandstone cliffs to the base of a large waterfall. Depending on seasonal rainfall levels, the gorge may contain pools deep enough for swimming. This is an idea walk to take slowly and enjoy the cool water and shade, especially in the heat of summer.

CANYON TRAIL

The trail begins from Mujib Adventure Center and follows the Dead Sea Highway to the South (starting point). Shortly after entering the gorge, you will reach the top of a spectacular waterfall 20m, high, which will be negotiated under the watchful eye of a trained guide. After descending the waterfall, the hike continues along the Siq Trail returning to Mujib Adventures Center.

MALAQI TRAIL

The trail begins from Mujib Adventure Center and follows the Dead Sea Highway to the South (starting point). The hike continues upstream to the confluence with Hidan River where you will swim in natural pools before moving on to descend a 20m high waterfall under the supervision of a trained guide. After descending the waterfall, the hike continues along the Siq Trail returning to Mujib Adventures Center.

The trail begins at the Mujib Adventure Center and follows the Dead Sea Highway before ascending into the reserve. Diverging to the South, the trail runs parallel to the Dead Sea, which provides a startlingly blue backdrop for the entire hike. The hike then continues along a number of dry wadis to the Raddas Ranger Station, where you may see the Nubian Ibex. It is also where the famous rock “statue” of Lot’s wife can be seen. After resting at the station, the trail continues along a road for about an hour.

AL-HIDAN TRAIL

The trail starts from the visitor center and moves from the Southwest to the northeast, you will swim from pool to another until you make to the end point where you will find the ancient wheat mill.

The Mujib Biosphere Reserve has installed a zipline made up of two parallel cables, allowing two people to zipline together. The zipline is 100m long, with a slope of about 9m, extending with the Mujib Bridge. From its starting point at the Visitor Center on the other side of the valley.

Canyoning in Wadi Mujib, Jordan: Explore the Siq Trail Waterfalls

In a land known for its red deserts and dry, cracked earth, a waterfall isn’t really the first thing you might think of. Nevertheless, Jordan harbors some impressive wet trails that pass through grand canyons, leading to stunning waterfalls. Wadi Mujib, in particular, which lies close to the Dead Sea , makes a fun and challenging location to go canyoning. Traverse your way through water that flows between incredible stone edges, climbing over boulders to reach the falls. Here’s all you need to know about canyoning Wadi Mujib in Jordan .

The Siq Trail in Wadi Mujib, Jordan

Wadi Mujib is a 212-square-kilometer Biosphere Reserve that spans from the Karak Mountains down to the Dead Sea . The gorge, with towering 40-meter-high cliffs, is home to several rivers that, depending on the season, make an incredible place to go canyoning. Though there are officially three ‘wet’ trails, the self-guided Siq trail in Wadi Mujib is by far the most popular. 

As you wade through the stream, holding on to the ropes and ladders, you pass multiple waterfalls that powerfully flow between the canyon. Marvel at the structure’s beautiful orange walls carved out centuries ago by the rain and its turquoise water.

The ‘hike’ requires a bit of strength to climb the ladders up the falls, but it isn’t too difficult. Keep in mind that some sections of the trail are deeper, making you wade through chest-deep water. Nevertheless, if you have the chance to go, Wadi Mujib is a must-do on your 7-day Jordan itinerary.

Canyoning in Wadi Mujib

The Siq Trail in Wadi Mujib is a refreshing welcome after days in the sun and sand. The journey begins at the Mujib Adventure Center, where you cross a bridge and go down a ladder into the wadi itself. Beforehand, you’ll have gotten your gear to start your canyoning experience carefully. 

The moment you step into the water, you’ll notice that it already runs pretty fast. Once you pass the first corner, the water becomes deeper – this is where the adventure truly begins. While you proceed through the gorgeous narrow passage, admire the sandstone curves of the canyon. There are lots of shallow sections where you can rest to take some photos. 

After a while, the water becomes deeper and starts flowing faster, so you’ll have to hold on to the ropes and rocks. These sections are easily identified, but there’ll also be staff there who’ll help you navigate the best section. Hold on to the ropes as you move through the white water, feeling the streams quicken below the surface.

Tip: For even more adventure, you can also do the Malaqi or Canyon Trail, which both include rappelling down a 20-meter cascade!

The Waterfalls

About halfway along the Siq trail in Wadi Mujib, you’ll come past the first cascade to ascend a level. This scramble up the rocks requires some upper body strength and a calm head if you can’t reach the rope immediately. Always take your time here, navigating how to climb up. There are a couple more climbs like this on the way to the waterfall.

At the end, you’ll find a stunning waterfall flowing powerfully into a small pool. Here, you have the chance to relax for a bit before making your way back the same way you came in. Cool off in the water below the falls, listening to it flow into the pool and echo through the canyon.

The route back is incredibly fun as you’ll slide down the rocks of two falls and float the rest of the way, following the stream. The friendly staff in these sections will point out where it’s best to get down. 

Note: Visitors have to be over 18 years old to access any of the wet trails in Wadi Mujib.

Wadi Mujib Guide

All of the canyoning trails in Wadi Mujib are well-maintained, with staff stationed throughout. However, for those who don’t want to explore on their own, there’s also the option to get a guide to accompany you. This is optional for the Siq Trail in Wadi Mujib (mandatory for the other two) and can be arranged at the activity center or later on at the more difficult sections. The cost for a guide is 30 JD (42 USD) per group.

Note: Always be patient at the more difficult sections. There might be a line-up as some people find it more challenging than others. Doing it safely is always more important than quickly.

How long is the Siq Trail in Wadi Mujib?

The Wadi Mujib Siq Trail is 2 kilometers in total, with the same way back as you entered after reaching the waterfall. The first half is an exciting climb upstream through changing rapids and over cascades. Expect to spend about 2 – 3 hours on the trail, admiring its beauty as you go. This is an incredible stop en route to the Dead Sea on your 7-day Jordan itinerary.

Opening Times & Entrance Fees

The season for canyoning in Wadi Mujib usually runs from April till the end of October (dry season), with the Siq trail open between 8 AM and 3 PM. We recommend getting there as early as possible, allowing you to have much of the canyon to yourself. If you visit later or on the weekends, you might have to wait before entering as it can get busier. There’s a maximum of 100 – 150 people allowed in the canyon at the same time. 

Tip: Always check the Facebook page of the Wadi Mujib Adventure Center to see if there are any updates on the opening times.

The Siq Trail in Wadi Mujib costs 21 JD (30 USD) per person and can be paid for in cash or card at the Adventure Center. You can also rent water shoes for 5 JD (7 USD). Wadi Mujib is not included in the Jordan Pass .

Getting to Wadi Mujib, Jordan

Located on the western side of the reserve, close to the Dead Sea and Highway 65, you find the Wadi Mujib Adventure Center, where all the trails start and end.

Public transport is limited to non-existent in this part of the country. Therefore, the quickest and most convenient way to get to Wadi Mujib is by car. Rent a car in Jordan and travel at your own pace, stopping wherever you want. Explore King’s Road on your Jordan itinerary, driving from Amman down to the Dead Sea and passing many beautiful attractions. From the Dead Sea, it’s only 25 minutes to Wadi Mujib.

You can also opt for a driver who’ll take you to Wadi Mujib from Amman and back for about 75 JD (105 USD). The drive takes about 1.5 hours one way, and the driver will wait for you in the Mujib parking lot. You can also combine this with a trip to the Dead Sea. 

Good to know: The parking lot (and overflow) at Wadi Mujib becomes full quite quickly, as there’s only room for about 30-40 vehicles. Try to get here before 10 AM.

Alternatively, you can join an organized tour from Amman that includes Wadi Mujib and the Dead Sea. Comfortably drive over to the canyon to experience a refreshing break from Jordan’s heat before relaxing in the salty waters of the Dead Sea.

Though you can visit Wadi Mujib on a day trip from Amman, there’s more to explore in the region, making it worth spending a night or two. What to Pack for Canyoning in Wadi Mujib?

Before you go into the water, the Adventure Center gives you a compulsory life jacket. Other than that, there are a few things to pack: 

• A waterproof/dry bag
• A small bottle of drinking water
• Your swimwear or sports clothes
• Shoes that can get wet (don’t wear slippers or Birkenstocks as they lack grip)
• A (waterproof) camera or your phone to snap some photos

If you don’t want your shoes to get wet, you can purchase water shoes from the Adventure Center for 5 JD (8 USD). They also rent out dry bags for 10 JD (14 USD) in case you don’t have your own and want to bring your things along. Most of the trail is in the shade, so you don’t have to bring your sunglasses on this refreshing activity. You can store everything you don’t need in your car or in the free lockers at the center. 

Good to know: Unlike elsewhere in Jordan, where women are recommended to cover up modestly, you can wear a bathing suit or shorts on the Siq Trail in Wadi Mujib.

The Best Time to Visit

Wadi Mujib makes a refreshing little oasis in the blazing heat of the Dead Sea area. However, it’s only open during the summer months (April 1-Oct 31), making that the best time to add it to your Jordan itinerary. Because of this, it can get busy, so try to come as early in the day as possible. Water levels vary throughout the season, giving the canyon a few deeper sections.

During the winter, the wet trails close as there’s more rain and a chance of flash floods.

Other Trails in the Wadi Mujib Reserve

Though the Siq Trail in Wadi Mujib is the most popular and accessible canyoning trail in the reserve, there are two other ‘wet’ trails. The Malaqi and Canyon Trail are both longer, deeper excursions into the park and include rappelling down a waterfall and returning through the Siq Trail. These trails also leave from the Adventure Center but require a mandatory guide.

Seasonality Wadi Mujib’s regular season is from April 1st through October 31.

However, the RSCN often shortens the season slightly if there is rain around the opening or closing days. Therefore depending on the weather, the opening and closing days may be shifted by a couple of days or weeks.

The lowest nature reserve on earth !

The 220 square kilometers reserve was created in 1987 by the Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature and is regionally and internationally important, particularly for the bird life that the reserve supports.

It extends to the Kerak and Madaba mountains to the north and south, reaching 900 meters above sea level in some places.

A Symphony of Adventure: Harmonizing Nature and Exhilaration at Wadi Mujib

Wadi Mujib, historically known as Arnon, is a gorge in Jordan which enters the Dead Sea at 410 meters below sea level. The Mujib Reserve of Wadi Mujib is the lowest nature reserve in the world, located in the mountainous landscape to the east of the Dead Sea, approximately 90 km south of Amman. The reserve is located in the central highlands of the southern part of Jordan valley. The reserve includes a system of mountains and wadis extending from the rift valley escarpment to the Dead Sea Shores.

UNESCO World Heritage Site Declaration Date: 2011 Location: Latitude 31.4997° or 31° 29′ 58.8″ north Longitude 35.6252° or 35° 37′ 30.8″ east. Administrative authorities: The Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature – RSCN Area (ha): The total area of the reserve is 21,200 ha Core area(s): 12,817.52 ha Buffer zone(s): 7,672.28 ha Transition area(s) : 710.2 ha

A large part of Central Jordan is drained by the Wadi Mujib (Wadi el-Mujib) basin. This river developed a deep canyon through the Moab plateau, the eastern shoulder of the Dead Sea Rift.

Intense subsidence of the base level at the Dead Sea is the main cause for the high rate of Pliocene/Pleistocene fluvial incision along the lower reaches of the Mujib basin. During this phase of accelerated incision the wadis were submitted to the presence of a dense fault net in the canyon area.

The directions of the thalwegs correspond well with the apparent directions of the faults, indicating that fluvial incision occurred preferentially along tectonic lines characterized by rock weakness and discontinuity. Major convex knickpoints along the longitudinal profiles are caused by normal fault movement or due to the delay in headward erosion with respect to the main or local base level. Minor knickpoints correspond usually to differences in rock resistance.

Climatic changes seem to be the principal cause for several types of Pleistocene deposits in the canyon but tectonic influence often played an additional role. Flash floods drive the principal incision events that result in effective erosion in the present dry semi-arid climate.

This 1,300 meter variation in elevation, combined with the valley’s year round water flow from seven tributaries, means that Wadi Mujib enjoys a magnificent biodiversity that is still being explored and documented today. Over 300 species of plants, 10 species of carnivores and numerous species of permanent and migratory birds have been recorded until this date. Some of the remote mountain and valley areas are difficult to reach, and thus offer safe havens for rare species of cats, goats and other mountain animals.

During the last Ice Age the water level of the Dead Sea reached 180 m below sea level, about 230 m higher than it is today. It flooded the lower areas of the canyons along its banks, which became bays and begun to accumulate sediments. As the climatic conditions changed, about 20,000 years ago, the water level of the lake dropped, leaving the re-emergent canyons blocked with lake marl. Most canyons managed to cut through their plugged outlets and to resume their lower courses. However, Wadi Mujib, the biblical Arnon River, abandoned its former outlet by breaking through a cleft in the sandstone. This narrow cleft became the bottleneck of an enormously large drainage basin with a huge discharge. During the years the cleft was scoured deeper and the gorge of Wadi Mujib was formed.

The Wadi Mujib reserve in Wadi Al Mujib consists of mountainous, rocky, and sparsely vegetated desert (up to 800 m), with cliffs, gorges and deep wadis cutting through plateaus. Perennial, spring-fed streams flow down the wadis to the shores of the Dead Sea which lies 400 m below sea-level.

The slopes of the mountainous land are very sparsely vegetated, with a steppe-type vegetation on plateaus. Groundwater seepage does occur in places along the Dead Sea shore, for example at the hot springs of Zara, which support a luxuriant thicket of Acacia, Tamarix, Phoenix and Nerium, and a small marsh. The less severe slopes of the reserve are used by pastoralists for the grazing of sheep and goats.

The hot springs of Hammamat Ma’in lie close to the borders of the reserve are heavily used for tourism/recreation. A large dam was recently finished at the bottom of the wadi, where the modern road crosses the river. As a result, a large lake has formed. Today, Wadi Al Mujib is fed by seven tributaries. As well as resident birds, the reserve is strategically important as a safe stop-over for the huge number of birds which fly annually along the rift valley between Africa & northeast Europe.

Most places in Jordan offer opportunities for bird watching and with major shifts in landscape and nature within short distances, there is much diversity as you move around the country. However, there are a number of key sites for bird watching that together host a wide cross- section of the country’s breeding and migrant birds. The main threat Wadi Mujib – Al Mujib reserve is facing is represented in water shortage as water from the lower Mujib River had been diverted to supply the nearby tourist resorts. The recent plans are to create more tourist resorts on the Dead Sea area; the many new implemented five stars hotels, and the many private apartments as in the case of Samarah Dead Sea Resort (2012-2013) are examples of this expansion. The shortage is getting more severe with the successive dry seasons in the area during the last few years. Such water scarcity adversely affects the fauna and flora of the reserve.

Large scale grazing by livestock is still also one of the main land-use activities that are widespread in the region surrounding the study area. As for human activities around the study area, some private lands are used for agriculture. These lands are located on the eastern part of the study area around the main villages there .

Accessibility problem

Poor accessibility to the reserve makes it difficult for visitors, tourists and researchers to reach it, which also hampers the documentation, research, studies and development programs devoted to assess its current and future needs like the environmental conditions survey (temperature variations, salinity of soil, wind and so on) of the reserve, leading to developmental constraints, since the thematic patterns that could emerge from the research, may be useful for the reserve planners.

The local communities of Wadi Mujib reserve

A. Local Communities living within the reserve: A small number of Azazmeh Bedouin live permanently in the area. They contribute to the general problem of the grazing and tree cutting. But they do not have traditional rights to the area. Total number of inhabitants who live permanently or seasonally in the transition area is around 400. The main economy for these inhabitants is livestock raising. The other communities living in the reserve and using it for grazing are the villagers who live in the surrounding villages. These villagers are living in the reserve (in the buffer zone) during winter and spring and the total number is around 300 inhabitants. These people depend mainly on grazing and farming activities for their livelihood. The last group living permanently in the core area of the reserve is the reserve rangers. These rangers are responsible for enforcing the reserve procedures systems through conducting patrol visits and monitor any environmental violation.

B. Immediate hinterland of the reserve: The reserve is located within two Governorates: Madaba and Kerak. A population of 128,495 inhabits Madaba. While the later is inhabited by 202,570. Both Governorates constitute 6.57% of the total population of Jordan. A cluster of villages surrounds the reserve location with a total population of 14, 319.

The reserve including all zones was established by the Prime Ministerial decree, following cabinet approval (number 4/62/13268) on the 9th of November 1985 and allocated to the RSCN for management from the Ministry of Agriculture through the Forestry Department, for the Prime minister letter in Arabic with an English translation.

Lo primero que tenéis que hacer para visitar Wadi Mujib es llegar al Mujib Adventure Center , el centro de visitantes que encontraréis en medio de la carretera del Mar Muerto . Allí encontraréis un pequeño aparcamiento donde podréis dejar el coche gratis . El recinto abre de 8 a 16 h.

Una vez en el interior del centro de visitantes , os informarán de las rutas que están disponible y podréis comprar la entrada allí mismo . Según la época, día de la semana, hora y demás es posible que os toque esperar hasta 2 horas por lo que os recomendamos ir a primera hora.

2. Barranquismo en Wadi Mujib

Existen cuatro rutas para hacer en Wadi Mujib: Siq, Ibex, Malaqi y Canyon . La ruta del Siq es la más popular de Wadi Mujib y la que hicimos nosotros. Por eso vamos a describiros brevemente como es cada ruta y nos extenderemos en el Siq Trail, que es probablemente el motivo que os llevará a incluir Wadi Mujib en vuestra ruta por Jordania .

Luego solo tendréis que regresar por el mismo camino que es mucho más sencillo, pues iréis a favor de la corriente y, en la mayoría de los tramos, bastará con que os dejéis arrastrar.

Tengo que decir que fue una ruta súper sencilla (salvo en 3 ó 4 puntos que hay que subir) y nada cansada. Además fuimos a finales de octubre y la temperatura del agua estaba perfecta .

Esta es una ruta seca, de unas 4 horas de duración y dificultad moderada . Hay que reservar con anticipación a través de Wild Jordan .

El sendero comienza en el Mujib Adventure Center y sigue la Carretera del Mar Muerto antes de ascender a la reserva . Divergiendo hacia el sur, el sendero discurre paralelo al Mar Muerto. Luego, la caminata continúa a lo largo de varios wadis secos hasta la estación Raddas Ranger , donde se puede ver el Nubian Ibex y la “estatua” de roca de la esposa de Lot . Después de descansar en la estación, el sendero continúa por una carretera durante aproximadamente una hora.

Esta es una ruta de agua, de unas 6-7 horas de duración y dificultad moderada-alta . Hay que reservar con anticipación a través de Wild Jordan .

El sendero comienza en el centro de visitantes y sigue la Carretera del Mar Muerto hacia el sur (punto de partida). La caminata continúa río arriba hasta la confluencia con el río Hidan, donde se nada en piscinas naturales antes de descender una cascada de 20 m de altura . Después de descender la cascada, la caminata continúa a lo largo del sendero Siq y regresa al Centro de visitantes .

Esta es una ruta de agua, de unas 4 horas de duración y dificultad moderada-alta . Hay que reservar con anticipación a través de Wild Jordan .

El sendero comienza en Mujib Adventure Center y sigue la Carretera del Mar Muerto hacia el sur (punto de partida). Poco después de ingresar al desfiladero, se llega a la cima de una espectacular cascada de 20 m de altura . Después de descender la cascada, la caminata continúa a lo largo del sendero Siq y regresa al Centro de aventuras Mujib.

Incluye la misma cascada que el “Malaqi” y el regreso por el sendero “Siq” , pero corta la caminata de 2 a 3 horas río arriba hasta el río Hidan.

Otra de las cosas que hacer en Wadi Mujib en lanzarse en tirolina . El recorrido tiene 100 metros de largo y 90 metros de desnivel y permite que se pueden tirar dos personas a la vez.

Lo podéis reservar en el mismo centro de visitantes.

• Una de las cosas más importantes para hacer barraquismo en Wadi Mujib es llevar la ropa y calzado adecuados .

Si vais a hacer el trekking de agua llevad bañador, ropa de secado rápido, toalla y escarpines . Llevar el chaleco salvavidas es obligatorio, pero eso os lo darán en el centro de visitantes, antes de empezar la ruta.

Si vais a hacer el trekking seco llevad zapatillas de escalada, ropa de montaña (según época del año) protector solar y agua .

El precio de la entrada y rutas de barranquismo en Wadi Mujib es de:

• Siq trail sin guía: 21 JD
• Ibex trail con guía: 21 JD
• Malaqi trail: 44 JD
• Canyon trail: 31 JD

La entrada a Wadi Mujib no está incluida en la Jordan Pass .

Los senderos de agua de Wadi Mujib solo abren del 1 de abril al 31 de octubre , debido a que el resto de meses los niveles de agua suben demasiados y no resulta seguro hacer el trekking .

A veces las fechas se pueden retrasar o adelantar en función de las condiciones climatológicas , por lo que es conveniente llamar por teléfono antes de ir. No se garantiza al 100% que ningún sendero esté abierto incluso durante los períodos de apertura .

Wadi Mujib se encuentra en medio de la carretera del Mar Muerto , a 80 km al sur de Ammán.

• La entrada a las rutas de agua no está permitida para los menores de 18 años .
• Unas horas antes de ir a Wadi Mujib llamad por teléfono para saber si está abierto , pues hay días que cierra si las condiciones climáticas no son adecuadas.
• En las rutas de agua de Wadi Mujib es obligatorio llevar el chaleco salvavidas (aunque la mayoría están rotos, a pesar del elevado precio que se paga).
• No hagáis el trekking de agua si no sabéis nadar .
• En las rutas de agua agarraos siempre de las cuerdas y seguid las indicaciones del personal que se encuentra en los puntos más complicados (aunque muchos están fumando tranquilamente en medio del cañón o mirando el móvil sin prestar atención a los visitantes).
• En las rutas secas no os apartéis del grupo .
• En las rutas de agua llevad una cámara de fotos acuática bien amarrada a la mano para no perderla .
• En las rutas de agua , dejad todas vuestras pertenencias en el coche o llevad lo más importante en una mochila impermeable .

Hola! He leido tu Barranquismo en Wadi Mujib y me ha despertado mucho interes. Tienes las coordenadas del Mujib Adventure Center? no encuentro el sitio de inicio de la aventura. Te lo agradecere!

Hola Carlos, no tenemos las coordenadas, pero lo vas a encontrar muy fácil en la misma carretera. Está bien indicado y hay un parking grande para dejar el coche. Solo tienes que poner mugir Adventure center y te saldrá. Un abrazo!

Votre randonnée aquatique au Wadi Mujib

Une excursion dans les environs d’Amman, afin d’aller découvrir le Wadi Mujib puis la mer Morte. Le Wadi Mujib est une réserve de biosphère où se trouve une randonnée aquatique à travers les gorges à ne pas manquer. L’eau qui traverse le canyon du Wadi est dite « miraculeuse » car il s’agit d’eau douce, très rare en Jordanie.

A pas tranquilles, vous commencez à marcher dans le spectaculaire canyon les pieds dans l’eau. Vous progressez dans le Wadi jusqu’à rencontrer une série de bassins naturels de toute beauté. Le paysage y est très impressionnant, composé de hautes parois rocheuses dont seul le sommet est éclairé par le soleil. Dans une ambiance conviviale, vous randonnez jusqu’à la fin du Wadi où une gigantesque cascade de 20m de hauteur jaillissant du haut du canyon vous attend ! La vue y est magnifique et le cadre propice à une pause bien méritée … avant de remonter le Wadi Mujib.

Le Wadi Mujib est une réserve de biosphère où se trouve le Siq Trail, une randonnée aquatique dans de l'eau douce. Le paysage y est impressionnant, composé de hautes parois rocheuses, de bassins naturels et d'une cascade.
