Should I Buy a Used Chevrolet Astro or GMC Safari?

Mike Schlee

The Workhorse Not-So-Minivan

should i buy a used chevrolet astro or gmc safari

Vehicle Overview

After a decade on the market, General Motor’s “mid-size” vans received their one and only update for the 1996 model year. The short wheelbase version of the van was dropped this year and styling was modified to better resemble the larger full-size GM vans. Base model Astros/Safaris featured a utilitarian front end complete with sealed beam headlights while higher trim models featured a more modern look with stacked horizontal headlights.

All vans were equipped with a four-speed automatic and a choice of rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. The 190 hp 4.3-liter V6 was overhauled for 1996 to deliver better fuel economy as the van’s official rating went up to 15 MPG city and 20 MPG highway compared to the old model’s ratings of 14 MPG city and 17 MPG highway. However, in 2002 the ratings were lowered to 14 MPG city and 18 MPG highway.

Trims Packages

From 1996 until 2000 the Chevrolet Astro passenger van came in base, LS and LT trim lines. From 2001 until 2005 there were no trim levels as the Astro came as a singular model.

For 1996 the GMC Safari was offered in four trim levels that included base, SLX, SLE and SLT. In 1997 the entry level base model was dropped just leaving SLX, SLE and SLT. For the 1999 model year the SLX trim was replaced by SL. Like the Astro, the Safari was reduced to a singular trim level from 2001-2005.

Top 3 Reasons to Buy

  • Space – Although it was originally intended to compete in the minivan segment, these vans were always a bit larger and offer more space. Able to seat eight adults comfortable, there was still a decent amount of cargo room including storage areas under the two rear benches. Those wanting a little more comfort could opt for second row captain’s chairs.
  • Price – The newest versions of these vans are approaching 10 years old now and depreciation was never a friend of the Astro/Safari. A low mileage good condition van can be had for quite a low price.
  • Towing – with a larger V6 engine and compact pick-up truck underpinnings, the Astro/Safari was more of a truck than most other small vans in the 1990s and 2000s. With rear-wheel drive, these vans are capable of towing 5,500 lbs. when properly equipped.

Top 3 Problem Areas

  • Brakes – A host of braking issues have been reported for these vans. The most common has to do with anti-lock brake (ABS) failure at low speeds. The brake booster and rotors have also been an issue. In 2003 most of these problems were corrected with the new six-lug wheel design and larger brakes, but rusting front brake lines affect the 2003-2005 models.
  • Safety – The Astro and Safari never scored well in crash test ratings. The IIHS gave the vans a “Poor” rating for every year of this generation. The NHTSA gave it a three-star rating for most areas although the side-impact rating did increase to four-stars in 1999.
  • Transmission/Harness – Other less common issues have to do with the failure of the automatic transmission and/or parts related to it. As well, wiring harness failures such as worn wires and melted components are a semi-common occurrence.

Before You Buy

With older models ensure the various recalls have been performed. It’s best to take the vehicle to a certified mechanic to inspect the van before purchasing as items like brake lines, wiring harnesses and the transmission should be investigated.

SEE ALSO: Should I Buy a Used CR-V?

During a test drive pay special attention to both acceleration and braking performance to ensure both are smooth and not choppy. Also pay attention to whether the ABS light comes on ever during braking.

Inspect all exterior door handles and check to see if the sliding side door and rear hatch (or dutch doors) operate properly. If living in a region that uses salt on the roads during winter months, check the underbody for excessive rust.

Best Bang for Your Buck

With a ten year model run of a vehicle that didn’t change all that much, there are a lot of similar vans on the market to choose from. It’s best to avoid the 1996-1999 vans as they had more recalls and complaints than the later models.

Chassis upgrades in 2003 saw the Astro/Safari get larger brakes and larger six-lug wheels. However these vans have had more issues with front brake lines rusting out compared to the older models.

SEE ALSO: Should I Buy a Used Hyundai Santa Fe?

If you don’t live in an area prone to rust, the 2003-2005 models make sense. However, for everyone else we suggest keeping to the 2000-2002 Astro/Safari.

What year Safari you have? Do you agree with what was stated above as far as avoiding 96-99? I was told to avoid anything older than 1995.

I recommend 03 -05 safari or astro van.

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

gmc safari astro van

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

gmc safari astro van

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

gmc safari astro van

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

gmc safari astro van

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

gmc safari astro van

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

gmc safari astro van

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

gmc safari astro van

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.

Best Years for an Astro/Safari?

  • Add to quote

Over the entire production run of these vans is there a specific year or group of years that is proven to be more reliable, with positive engine changes, body or running gear updates etc. or that simply gets better mileage than others? As a general rule the newer the better but in some cases this does not hold true, for example the 99 Jeep Cherokee is considered the best year for a variety of reasons. Other examples are motorcycles , boats trucks, almost anything made buy man over time developes a reputation of being good or bad for any given number of production years. I expect some will answer they one they own...this could be true or the slightly biased view of the van.

Micky D burgers have tasted the same for 30 years, they dont wear out and have changes made to them over a dozen years of production, so its not an subjective question. The example i gave, was from actual owners on the jeep forums there are exact reasons for that year standing out as the best. The same question can be answered on the Triumph, HD, Suzuki, Kawasaki forums there is always a pattern that developes over time with any mass produced item for any number of reasons. For example, the quality of steel used in any given year or the country of origin of the parts used......or the level of quality control.

EVERY answer will be totally subjective. The reason I like my van is likely to be a totally different reason for why YOU like YOUR van. Everyone has different driving habits, different weather, different cargo, different abilities and desire to do maintenance and repairs. Some pull trailers. Some camp. Some haul plywood, some haul kids. Some raise, some lower. Some drive a thousand miles per year, some drive 20,000 miles per year. Additionally, nobody has owned every year of Astrofari. I don't think anybody has. So they won't be able to comment on the year models they aren't familiar with. Simply put, 89s are the best... Lumpy

I like the older Gen 1 Vans....especially the shorty Vans.......I still want to get a nice clean one and put a V8 in it and a mild 2-3" lift.

gmc safari astro van

Per Wikepedia, '90 was the first year for AWD. IMHO and especially for our area, that turned the Astro from something you forgot about until the snow melted into the only car you used in the snow.

Im looking for an all purpose vehicle that can haul stuff inside, tow a reasonable amount gets 20+ MPG looks good and is safe to haul around a future rugrat and that is comfortable on long drives And that can be a mini camper if needed. Reasonable cost to buy and maintain reliable easy to work on if problems arise........My short bed Chevy truck with buckets is not gonna work anymore....

Gen 1 can do what you want and a Gen 2 can do it too ,,, Gen 2 is likely to be more what you need for what you want to do as they all are the extended version ,, ALL years are easy to put a V8 in ,,a Gen 2 is just s easy as a Gen 1 , just as long as you understand the OBD2 setup , it is actually a lot better than the OBD1 , just a little more extensive , but once you know it ,;; it's benefits become clear .. I prefer the Gen 2 ,,but with time and money any Gen 1 can be sharp as well , really depends on what style ,looks you prefer , beauty is in the eye of the beholder Kinda depends on variables, you can use a cargo van , or get a passenger van and remove the seats . Gen 2 came with upgrades in various ways , like steel leaf springs , and are "Reasonable cost to buy and maintain reliable easy to work on if problems arise." Gen 2 engines received improvements along the way , but they all seem to run a very long time , it depends on how well maintained it is.

I think that 20+ MPG requirement will eliminate Astrofari's from the list. Some "may" be able to coax 20 out of them under great conditions once in a while. But under normal conditions, expect significantly less. Particularly when you suggest "hauling stuff", "tow" and drive that rugrat around town to soccer practice. 20+ on the highway, unloaded, no tow, wind at your back - perhaps. Otherwise, Jose', no way. Lumpy

I average around 20-21 on highway ,, I had better at times occasionally , factory rates the astro at about 16-17 city and 20-22 highway , it can vary depending on what gear ratios cargo load , tire size and tread design , soft or hard rubber composition , various other things and how well van has been cared for through the years

Might be football or motocross practice or ballet in the distant future....still in the oven! Thanks for the info guys. I get 24 mpg running 60 mph in my V8 pickup, all syn fluids front to back. So this van should get at least 20 unloaded and runing along like an old man. I understand towing is a whole different ballgame my truck with the 305 drops to around 13 the 350ci truck about 11. I dont think the front wheel drive vans will work for me.

94 is the best. It is the last year of Gen1 and has all of the refinements. 94 was the last year that the front end looks good.(IMO)

I prefer my 95 V6 over my 91 V8 because its just as quick, CPI engine, and first gen body.

Eh- I get around 18.5 on the highway loaded with wife, 3 kids, 100lb dog & all our stuff. It tows our popup camper well, and the mileage seems to go up at times (aerodynamics- I've read the same about Jeeps too). Like has been said, your particular van, the care it has received, your driving style, etc etc etc will all play a part. Hence the phrase 'your mileage may vary'.

My '96 gets 15MPG on average when we take it on long trips. Of course there are 6 people in it and its loaded down. Plus its AWD!

I get 20 mpg on the highway, even a little better with my '00 awd with 178,000 Ks on it. I downshift into 3rd a lot when ever there is any hill in front of me. Keep it in the sweet spot of the power band. If you just leave it in drive(4th) it takes a pretty good demand to downshift into 3rd and by then the motor has been lugging a bit and using way more fuel than if it was in 3rd. I use down hills to gain some momentum and then basically back off the throttle as I'm cresting the hill and then coast over and down. Put my foot into near the bottom of the hill while I still have gravity on my side to pick up momentum again for the next hill. So it's not like using a cruise control maintaining the same speed. I have to concentrate to drive like this for sure... can't really keep on it if I'm in conversation with someone. Actually last trip I made from Nelson to Vernon I got over 20 mpg, maybe at least 22 I'm not sure exactly there were a few extra Ks in my math.

Nhay, nhay, nhay, my gorilla is bigger than your gorilla. Sounds like a revival meeting ! If you want to know exactly which year Astro is THE best...then get one that was built in one of these years: 85, 86, 87, 88, 89, 90, 91, 92, 93, 94, 95, 96, 97, 98, 99, 00, 01, 02, 03, 04, 05. You can't go wrong chosing any of the above. But, before you blindly buy one, be sure to have it looked over by a competent mechanic whom you can trust. Also, make sure there are enough cupholders. Bob

I know how to settle all of this. The best year is the one you own.Nothing can compete with the one you can jump in, and go anywhere in.I rest my case.Would anyone else like to question the witness.

Yes, if it please your honor... How many good Astros/Safaris have you owned ? Where were you on the night of the 17th ? Can you point to the person you saw hot wiring your ride ? how many more questions can I ask before you figgure out how ridiculous this is ? Court adjourned... Bob

the early carbs are just as reliable as any carb engine out there, the older ones have always needed more tune ups to maintain solid running. if that's not your thing, then i wouldn't recomend the early years. 94 being the last generation year would have the latest computer and the latest sensors for that generation. obd2 is a bit sketchy at first. 95 was a major split for the computers. 96 is almost the same. they got most of the bugs out by 98. anything after 98 will have the same sensors all the way up to the end. so from a computer reliability standpoint, 93 and 94 will be the most reliable. then 98 and up will be best choices for the computers. this pattern is the same for any manufacturer. any time you have a new generation, plan on 2 dud years for sure. it's a question. guys should try harder to answer the question rather than bantering why you won't...lol it's a question and not a difficult one.

OBD2 computers are by far the best computers and as far as reliability is concerned neither system is really more reliable than the other ,,,it just depends on your level of skill in repairing cars ,,if you not much on dealing with the latest technology and want as close as you can get to a carb machine ,,then the Gen1 is the way to go . If you have experience with modern cars and modern technology or want to learn it then a Gen 2 is the way to go , there is not much difference at all between 96 and the newer ones ,, until you get to the 2007- 2008 cars , but even then it is just adding more features 95 still had the OBD1 computer on it , Statement of 93 94 being most reliable is not true , there is just less senors on them and not able to do some of the other stuff that newer cars can ,,new features and options as always come with newer years .Some people just have less skill than others do .Actually I prefer the 96 over the other years , but 96 -99 are nearly identical , just as few changes , 2000 had the BCM Body Control Module starting in that year through 2005 . The new injection system that came on 2003 and newer can be easily installed on 96 and up vans to get that benefit . It depends on what you want and what level of skill you have if you plan to do repairs yourself ,, if you gonna pay someone else , it won't matter In any manner the newest you can get is 7 years old as now the 2012 cars are out , lik e any ride it matters more how well a vehicle is cared for , a new care that is not well cared for will be more problem than an old one that is well cared for

The Unique Burial of a Child of Early Scythian Time at the Cemetery of Saryg-Bulun (Tuva)

<< Previous page

Pages:  379-406

In 1988, the Tuvan Archaeological Expedition (led by M. E. Kilunovskaya and V. A. Semenov) discovered a unique burial of the early Iron Age at Saryg-Bulun in Central Tuva. There are two burial mounds of the Aldy-Bel culture dated by 7th century BC. Within the barrows, which adjoined one another, forming a figure-of-eight, there were discovered 7 burials, from which a representative collection of artifacts was recovered. Burial 5 was the most unique, it was found in a coffin made of a larch trunk, with a tightly closed lid. Due to the preservative properties of larch and lack of air access, the coffin contained a well-preserved mummy of a child with an accompanying set of grave goods. The interred individual retained the skin on his face and had a leather headdress painted with red pigment and a coat, sewn from jerboa fur. The coat was belted with a leather belt with bronze ornaments and buckles. Besides that, a leather quiver with arrows with the shafts decorated with painted ornaments, fully preserved battle pick and a bow were buried in the coffin. Unexpectedly, the full-genomic analysis, showed that the individual was female. This fact opens a new aspect in the study of the social history of the Scythian society and perhaps brings us back to the myth of the Amazons, discussed by Herodotus. Of course, this discovery is unique in its preservation for the Scythian culture of Tuva and requires careful study and conservation.
